I'll have to tell you, Danny. I actually think, I don't know if you're the Mad Hatter, I'm the Mad Hatter, because as I was going through the games to watch this week, it hit me. Time has been taken away from us. The conference tournaments, one of them, Sunshine State, starts this weekend. Like, where does the time go? I don't know if I'm the Mad Hatter and you're the Queen of Hearts, or vice versa.

It's just gotten away from us, and all of a sudden we're in playoff time. It's a, you know, it's a fast season. It moves by at warp speed. It seems like yesterday we were doing conference previews, and here we are, we're getting ready to start conference tournaments. So, you know, first thing tonight, though, Kev, I've got to apologize to the listeners. The last couple of weeks I have not brought my A game, I gotta admit. I have been under the weather, I've been hit with some sort of bug. Uh, it even cost us a night recording one night last week. This thing has been kicking my butt for about a month now. It turns out I had a little case of uh walking pneumonia. Oh man. I couldn't shake it, I couldn't shake it, I couldn't shake it. I didn't miss work. I kept going back to the doctor, whatever. So, whatever happened last Thursday, all of a sudden I felt like a million bucks. It all came back. I got my appetite back and I got my energy back. Guys at work were like, Dan, you feel better, don't you? I was like, I feel so much better. So gotta apologize to the listeners because I definitely did not bring my A game. Now I'm psyched, I'm ready, I'm pumped, I'm ready to go.

Top 10 Countdown

And part of that is changes in what's happened in the top 10 and beyond. So why don't we start with your top 10 countdown?

Uh, here we go with this week's week 11 top 10 countdown. Kev, number one, Adelphi. You ready? I'm ready. Rollin', rollin', rolling. Keep them doggies rolling. Raw hot. They are just killing it. They're 12-0. They beat number 18, Assumption, 19-6 this week. Noah Gibson had four goals in that game. And they beat number nine Pace last night in a close one, Kev. Close one. Pace could have done it if they would have done some things a little cleaner. But uh Delphi wound up winning that one 10-7. Number two, Tampa rolls to 14-1. They beat number 17 Rollins 10-5. Will Schmidt had 14 saves in that one. And they beat St. Leo up pretty good. What's that? 16-4 was the final in that game, I believe. So they are just rolling along, Tampa Spartans. Number three, the St. Anslum boys up there. 9-1. They rolled to. They beat AIC 21-4, Kev. Poor AIC. Ben Turpin, five goals. And uh they play at SNHU tonight, I think, I believe. Uh number four, Wingate. Rolling, rolling. 10-2 now. The dogs are. They beat the North Greenville with Trailblazers. I always get confused. I started down the wrong path. I'm glad I didn't say anything. Yeah, they beat the Trailblazers rather handily, Kev. 17-7. Sean Clark had seven goals for the Wingate Bulldogs. And they play LMU next, and it's senior day for the Dogs. So that should be a fun day. Number five, LR. They roll up to 9-3 now. They beat number nine Anderson last week, 19-14 in a in an offensive shootout.

Great game. Sloan Stewart with three goals in that one. And they play Coker next. They controlled that game. Yeah, they did. They did. Number six, Seaton Hill. They rolled to 11 and 2 now. They beat Northwood 22 to 12. Carter Lee with five goals in that game. He's killing it this year for them. They play Frostburg next, Kev. Number seven, Florida Tech. They're number seven now in the country, Kev. This is the updated top ten. Usually go a week behind. I went up to date. I'm so confused. I know. Number seven, the Florida Tech Panthers. They are good, Kev. They're 11-2. And they eked out a double overtime victory over Palm Beach Atlantic 9-8.

And they were down by four in the fourth. PBA was playing a great game. I turned to that when it was in the fourth quarter. I'm like, what the heck is actually in the third quarter, and there was a four-goal difference. And I watched the rest of the game. In fact, the other game I was watching, I just turned off. I went over to that one to watch the overtime and move back to the other one.

PBA give a lot of credit to PBA. They've been really competitive this year, man. Thomas Strong, the midfielder for the Panthers, had two goals. And Florida Tech plays Tampa next. Yeah. Number eight, Anderson fell to LR 1914. They go to L uh 11-4. And they dropped to 5-4 in conference, Kev. Number nine, Pace. Fell to Bentley. 13-11. Declan Landers had three goals for the Setters, and then they lost to a Delphi last night. So tough week for uh the Pace Setters, and they got two more tough ones coming up with St. A's, right? They got St. A's coming up.

And number 10, Lewis. Looks very good. They beat William Jewel 10 to three. And Cole Wesner had two goals in that game. And they host Rockhurst before the GLVC tournament starts. So that should be a great game. That's your top ten countdown. Couple of no uh scores to note. Westminster beat Colorado Mesa. They revenged that loss. They beat them 15-13. And Ridge Couch had three goals and three assists. Had a great game for the Westminster. What were we guys?

Yeah, well, and I watched that game. Great game. It was tied 13-13 with 1-27 left. And Cam Conti scored for the Griffins with 26 seconds left to put them up one. And then Theo Lee, he added the X run with 15 seconds left. And really it's the saves that made the difference. Westminster holding a 14-9 edge over Colorado Mesa. Yeah. So that was a great game. And now it's really going to come down to the tournament. Like I you expect them to see each other in the finals.

It looks that way as of right now. How about Georgian Court? Big over Felician, 15-3. Brody Seaborn with five goals and an assist in that game. How about Roberts Wesleyan over Frostburg up in Rochester? Beat Frostburg 9-8. Hawks had an 8-9 lead in the fourth. And they went 19 for 21 at the dot. I think that was the difference. Montevallo. You're going to talk about that one, right?

Okay. That was a great game. Point Park over Tiffin, 12-10. Point Park gets another W in their inaugural season. North Greenville beat Chawan 20-4. Got back on the winning, winning waves for the Trailblazers. Chestnut Hill put up 26 on Coach Scorsha and the Caldwell Cougars. That's just not right. Lander over UAH. Bridgeport over Holy Family, which we talked about, right? We're going to talk about that one tonight. Number seven, Maryville. And Rockhurst. We're going to talk about that one.

Yeah, that's a stunner, is right. They've won three out of their last five, the mocks have. And uh Maddox Walton had three goals in that game. So just a couple of scores to note, Kev.

One, two others to note. Northwest Nazarene beat Adam State 19-9. Now remember, Adam State won the first game. Northwest Nazarene now sets himself up possibly to go into the tournament. So that's that's one. The other one I found interesting, not the final score, Southern New Hampshire over Franklin Pierce, 13-8. But Franklin Pierce was up in this game 5-1. And so they Southern New Hampshire had to come back. So what what does that say about what uh Franklin Pierce is starting to do this year? I I think that's kind of be interesting to see future years how that works out. I agree. So to to go and one other correction I did check. Anderson is five and three in conference.

Week in Review

But let's get into the weekend review, Danny. Why don't we start off with a game you watched and I didn't, and that was Bentley against Pace.

Yeah, uh, I'm sorry that you didn't see this game, but Bentley pulls it out, man, played a really good game against Pace, had a good game plan. And that game plan, Kev, is what they've been doing against good teams. They slow the ball down on offense and keep the other teams' offense off the field. And they play good defense and solid goalie play. And by doing that, they were able to beat come back. They came back to beat pace. Uh Bentley won the opening face-off on a violation, and Brady Glass instantly turned the ball over to Pace. Jake Sensi Jake Sensi buried that biscuit, and Pace took a one-goal lead in less than a minute off the clock. Bentley won the next face-off and turned the ball over again. And this time the Setters Declan Landers buried one. And Pace had a quick two-goal lead, and it looked like, well no, looked like they might have run away with it quickly. Then each squad kind of settled down and traded some possessions and uh when Bentley's uh Tate Fitzmaurice. I love that name. Sounds like a high-end real estate agent in Manhattan, right? He got the Falcons on the board and Bentley won the next face-off and turned it over again. This time Pace's Colin Reese buried one and pace led 3-1. Bentley won the next face-off, and guess what? They kept possession, Kev, and worked the offense and scored from a nice goal from Harrison Murray. And the Falcons were down one. Pace rattled off four unanswered after that, and ended the first with a pretty commanding 6-2 lead. Wow. In the second, Bentley used a very controlled, like I said, offense, methodical, deliberate, disciplined, fundamental defense, and they started to chip away at that four-goal deficit. Melhorn, Veneron, Nick Bell uh Bell uh Bergland, and Brady Glass all buried biscuits, and they tied it up with four minutes left in that half. Winning face-offs was key for Bentley, and Melhorn and Harrison Murray gave the Falcons a one-goal lead at the half. So they chipped back and came back. In one quarter. Yes. More of the same now in that third. Winning face-offs, controlling possessions, controlling flow of the play, and that offense was just keeping Pace's offense off the field, like I said. And the Falcons outscored the setters 3-2 in the third and led 11-9 going into the fourth. So going into the fourth, more of the same, Kev. Same stuff. Winning face-offs, controlling possessions, controlling flow of the game, using methodical, patient, deliberate, fundamental across, and just basically beat beat pace by slowing them down and keeping the offensive off the field. So Bentley one by two, 13-11. They go to 6-5, 4-2 in conference. Pace goes to 10-2, and they were five. Now they're five-and-one in conference. So for the setters, Declan Landers had three goals. Zach Getz had two goals and assists. Will Donowski had a goal and two assists. Cody McLean had a goal. Colin Reese had a goal. Jake Since he had two goals. Trevor Lamero dished out a couple of assists. He had two assists. James Rassellan and Hugo Villavla, not too good. Kev 7-14 at the dot, four for eleven at the dot. Jack Kern and Hunter Wilcox split time in goal, and they only had six saves apiece. So they struggled a little bit as well. And for Bentley, uh Nick Berglund had three goals. Harrison Murray, two goals. Tate Fitzmaurice, the real estate agent. Brendan Venera had two goals. Tate had two goals. Beckett Melhorn, two goals and assists. Jake Calabro with a goal. Matt Barry with six saves. And Dante Diamico, 16 for 25 at the dot. Bentley outshot him. They out more shots on goal. They had a couple of more turnovers. Pace was 20 for 27 at the clear. They were really struggling clearing the ball.

Yeah. Do you think that was defense generated or was it just some mistakes? Do you remember?

I think it was a little bit of both, you know? Yeah, a little bit of both. I think there was sometimes a couple of bad passes kind of forcing things up. And and and combination of good defense from Bentley. So at the end of the game, I mean, at the end of the day, I think that was a loss that stung Pace. I think they weren't expecting that. I think they were expecting to go up there and win because they have been playing so well. And I thought that was a stinging loss for Pace.

So they could have, they could have not, I don't think Coach Mariana was this way, but players could have been thinking more towards Adelphi versus game. Yep, that trap game. We've talked about this in the NE10. Teams like Bentley, teams like Assumption, even St. Mike's, Southern Hampshire, name a lot of them that have been in the mix with these higher, what we usually call the top teams in the conference over a long time. The Paces, St. A's, Adelphi. Right. Bentley. It becomes, can become somewhat of a trap game. Absolutely. 100%. Now, Bentley was one that we were w waiting to see what they would look like this year. They were young, and you've seen how they've improved over the season.

Yeah, they're well coached, you know. Again, they don't do anything flashy. There's not like one big huge superstar on that team. You know, they don't do a lot of flashy stuff. They just kind of use disciplined and comicly like that experience.

He's the one who's keeping probably that team common. We can do this. We can do this, you know, play our game.

Yeah. Yeah, he's been there 130 years now, you know. So he knows the game. He's good at it. He knows how to coach. He knows what he's got. And he coaches what he has well. And again, the last couple of games I've seen Bentley play. They played well. I mean, he played really well against the Delphi a couple of weeks ago, using that same method, slowing it down, keeping the pace down, using good fundamental uh fundamental defense, doing well at face-offs and doing well in the in goal. Yeah, exactly.

All right, let's move on. Let's we'll stay up in the north region here. This was on Saturday. This was Bridgeport against Holy Family. Bridgeport pulls us out 17-16. You and I split on who was going to win. You said Holy Family, I said Bridgeport. Really, Danny, 17-16. We could this really was a pick'em game. They are very, very close. And oh, by the way, Holy Family was up after one, five-three. And to be honest, if you're watching that first quarter, Holy Family owned it. And you're thinking, I'm thinking, all right, Danny, Danny's the hero. I'm the goat. That's what I'm thinking of back of my head. Danny was right, I was wrong. Danny was right, I was wrong. Holy Family then goes up 6-3, but Bridgeport comes back in the second quarter and they were leading 7-6, and it was 8-7 at half Bridgeport. One goal lead. What does that show you? Once again, how close these teams are. Here was the interesting thing all in the second half. Bridgeport would get a lead, like a three-goal lead. Holy Family would get it within one. And then Bridgeport would stretch it again. And Holy Family would get it in one. It happened. They were up 11-7. Then Holy Family scored three in a row in the third quarter. It ended up being 13-11 after three Bridgeport. Holy Family gets it within one, making it 13-12. Then Bridgeport stretches it to 15-12. Holy Family gets it within one in the fourth at 17-16, but they couldn't close after that. There just wasn't enough time. 17-16 was the final. And with that win, Bridgeport sets a program win record at 8-5. Wow. All right. So for Bridgeport, uh Darien Frey had four goals. Matthew Leventini had two goals, two assists. Luciano Canino, seven goals, three assists for Bridgeport. Wow. That's a game. Definitely. James Napley had one goal, three assists. Steven Trama, two goals, one assist. Ashton Lankowski, one goal, two assists. And Luca Runyon on defense, six ground balls, four caused turnovers. Great game for him. For Holy Family, Noah Simpson had four goals. Xander Kelly, two goals, two assists. Jake Freeney and Matt Goff both had two goals and one assist a piece. Parker Smith had two goals, and Jaden Williams had one goal, two assists. A really close game. Fun to watch. It'll be fun watching them in the CACC going against competing against each other, continuing as they go on. And it'll be interesting to see in the in the conference tournament. We will get back to that later. How about we go to another Saturday game up in the North Region? This is an ECC battle. Mercy against number 14 Malloy. Yeah, Malloy. The boys look good in that game. They pulled it out 17-11. I'll start this off, Danny, by saying one thing. Turnovers for Mercy at the beginning and aggressive ride to put Malloy up early. And I think I wrote a note at the very end. This game was chippy. It was physical. And I wouldn't put it past Coach Dunn to say. Boys, this is our field. This is our conference now. This is our win. And I think Malloy just played physical. Bodies were flying. There were no free clears on either side. Like they were going after it.

It was a great game to watch.

First of all, Kev, these are two New York teams. A lot of these kids are from the same high schools. Yeah. Yeah. They're from the same town teams. They go back to playing eight, nine, ten years old together. Okay? So there's a lot of Long Island kids on both these teams. So they know each other. And there was a lot of flags in this game, boy, oh boy. 14 penalties. 14 penalties in this game. And I think six of them were in the first quarter. Like you said, they were getting chippy. They were getting.

In my notes, I had kept on saying, check penalties, check penalties, check, you know.

I mean, I thought Malloy looked sharp out of the gate. Jake Taylor and Brayden Pasienzo and Justin Powlis all scored. Taylor scored. That kid, he scored twice. The Lions just roared out to a got that? You see that? Yeah, I think I'm quick on my feet. I'm feeling better, Cap. They roared out to a quick four-goal lead before Jack Agra scored for the Mavs. Magyar, my man Matt Maggyar, buried a biscuit to give the Mavs their second goal. But Malloy, no Malloy's Noah Hammond buried one. And Mercy added one more, but Malloy led 5'3 after one. I thought both defenses played pretty well. Some nice saves by both goalies. Huntsberger scored a pair in that frame, bringing the Mavs closer, but still trailed by two. All ECC LSM Thomas Kofont added a pole goal in the game from Malloy. And that seemed to fire the lines up, man.

Well, look at it. At that time, like you said, Hunsburger scores twice. He gets it within two. And right off the face of that, face-off, their LSM scores a goal to bring it back up to three. That got that, you're right.

They were like that that fired him up. I like Kofod, man. He can play. Again, not the biggest guy. Just his footwork is amazing and his stick work is amazing, but his IQ is above amazing. He's just a really, really fun player to watch. Yet a couple of late quarter goals by Hunsberger and Agris kept Mercy close, but Malloy still took a two-goal lead into half, Kev. Third, Malloy used Pazienta to continue just to win face-offs, man, and control possession. And the Lions, and that fast-paced start to the second half took the Mavs by surprise, if you ask me. The Lions scored five goals in the frame, and the defense was able to force Mercy into trouble in clearing the ball. And just you know, Mercy led 14-9 after three, and that was it, man. It was just, it was Mercy's day. They were the better team.

Yeah, I had a note that I thought Malloy's offense looked very balanced between moving the ball and actually even beating their man on dodges now and then. They were shooting up top, they were getting balls down low. And I had said last week kind of Malloy's offense and their threats there against Dorfman in goal, Corbo and Fitzgerald on D. Could they shut down Malloy? And they couldn't. And and and Dorfman was replaced by Peter Murphy in that game. Yeah. So and I'm not sure it was all his fault. I'm sure part of it was like maybe the coach is like, all right, let's see if this gets us going, right? That's a lot of times when you see that happen. Right. I I just saw, and I I say again, Malloy's tenacious ride just really revived dividends for them during that game.

100%. And losing faceoffs spelled doom for mercy. I mean, because Malloy just seems to have the ball all the time. So with the win, Malloy is the regular season ECC champs, Kev, for the first time in programming history. Congratulations, Coach Dunn and the Malloy Lions. Good job, boys. Yeah, that was a great game.

Okay, let me talk about Montevallo Flaggler. You did not get to watch that game, right? I did not. I know. Montevallo pulls this game out 15-14. I said Flagler better watch out last week in that podcast. And you said you talked about the Malloy game. Both games, Malloy Mercy, Flagler, Monavalo, exact same time. I'm in Command Central. I'm listening to Malloy. I'm trying to watch that game in the periphery. I'm watching what's happening on the other game. It was a mirror image to begin with. Flagler goes up 3-0 with 1053 left in the first quarter. And if I look at the clock that I had for Malloy, it was 1050 something. Like it was like it was really crazy. But the Falcons started fighting back, unlike some of what we saw from Mercy. Mercy did fight back, but it was a little bit different after that. They fought back, made it 3-2. It was 3-3 after one. And I think really when Montevallo had him, it had it tied after that first quarter, they're saying, okay, because you know Flagler is very tough at home. Yeah. Now this wasn't a night game. I think they're even tougher at night. Like you play them at night in their home field. Yeah. That's the that's their turf, right? Yeah, for sure. Montevallo took its first lead in the second quarter with 10.08 left to make it 5'4. They go up 6'4 before Flagler rattles off three in a row to make it 7'6. But Monavalo chips back. It's 9'8 at half. The last transition goal was continual passing until someone was open on the doorstep and Wade Lamont was out of position. And that was right near the end of that second quarter. I think that gave them juice again. Then the Falcons continue to kind of put that pressure on. They're up by three after three, 13 to 10. Just really smart play by Montevallo on offense. Their eyes were up viewing the field. Whoever had the ball and guys were cutting. It wasn't just a dodge, and I'm going for it. And you know, but Flagler fights back in the fourth. They score two in a row to make it 13-12. Then they made it three in a row. So they tied it at 13-13. This is a good game. 9-24 left. Yep. Here's one of the guys that was the difference. Alex Agorshian in goal. He made some critical saves for Montevallo in transition, doorstep saves. Um and and realistically, Montevallo goes up 15-13. There was a late hit penalty by the Saints. Falcons win the faceoff. You would think just run out the clock. What they do is they try a skip pass. Instead of working it around, Saints intercept it. They go down and but an offside is called on Flagler. Oh boy. So now Monoval gets the ball back and they can essentially drain the clock, which they try to do. Flagler has a little time left. They score with 4.3 seconds left. The game's at 15-14. They don't have enough time. Falcons win the face-off and they win 15-14 to close it out. So a close game, but I'll tell you, it was you got to give a lot of credit to what Montevallo did. They went in there. Absolutely. It was a really close game. It's a game you would expect in the peach belt with two teams like that.

Well, of course, it's a dog. You know that. He's real tough. You know, he's always been one of the better, better keepers in the country, Kev, for four years now. Yeah. Yeah.

And so there's a difference. The saves were 14 for Montevallo, 9 for Flagler. Get this on shots. Montevallo had 33. Flagler had 51. Shots on goal, though, were a lot closer. That'll tell you the efficiency that Montevallo had. 24 shots on goal for Montevallo, 28 for Flagler. And so, and Montevallo kind of controlled face-off, which helped him out too. 21 to 10 over Flagler.

So Montevallo, Matthew Boaz had six goals. Six goals. Michael Hawkins had three goals, one assist. Lucas Mullen, two goals. Samuel Martin, two goals, one assist. And Nick Geka had two assists. On Flagler, our man Trace McDonald does what he always does. Three goals, three assists for him. Griffin Moore had two goals. Will Linko and Jack Pila both had three goals apiece, and Brandon Carter had three ground balls and four caused turnovers in that game.

Why don't we talk about the Anderson LR game, Danny?

Yeah, you want to talk about that game?

Yeah. Anderson loses to LR 1914. Between the bricks, this is what I saw, Danny. This was a track meet to begin with. I mean, this thing was fast from what I saw. It's kind of settled in the second half, but it was it was fast. What I saw was LR out hustled Anderson. They won key ground balls and really moved the ball well, and they were cutting well on offense. And their D probably looked the best I've seen them this year. I think they're gilling at the right time. I think that's the best game of the season I've seen Lenore Ryan play.

I don't know. I don't know about that. I didn't think Owen Peters was that great in goal, to be honest with you. He was 46%. He had 12 saves. I mean, that's nothing that, you know. It's okay. It's okay. Yeah. It's not a good thing. I'm saying they're deep so that I think, I think, I think they I think you know, Owen Peters played good, but not great. I think it, you know, you said to in in last week it's it's all about it might be coming down to goalie play in this game. Yeah. And I agreed with you. I was like, Mancini is going to be great at the dot. He struggled. He struggled at the dot. Well, uh Aiden Dixon and A.J. Rush are are really good too. That's they were combined 21 for 36. Yeah. Mancini was 10 for 24. Yeah. It's it screams right there. But you know what? LR is so good offensively that they can make up for that. You know what I mean? They can make it up for that. Um, I thought, again, I didn't I don't understand why they didn't start Aiden Laughlin, the Anderson Trojans, in goal. They started Bobby Devonport. And Devenport struggled, man. He couldn't stop, if you ask me. Yeah. He was struggling. And LR, they're gonna shoot. You know they're gonna shoot. And if you don't have a goalie that can stop the easy ones, LR is gonna have a day. And that's exactly what happened. Donnie Powell got the Bears on the board in the first three minutes of the game. Aiden Dixon got the Trojans on the board less than a minute later. Jared Huff found Loudenbach with a nice pass. Then Morgan Mattish nailed one, and it was 3-1 Bears quick. Each team traded goals for the rest of the quarter, and LR led 6-4 after one. Uh in the second Huff, Seward and Seward and Bushy all scored for LR before Cooper Laughlin, Aiden's little brother, buried one for the Trojans. LR poured in four more goals before half and had a commanding six-goal lead at half. And if you ask me, came down to goalie play, like you said. And the lack of it in the Trojan goal from Bobby Davenport, he struggled. In the third, Aiden Dixon brought the Trojans to within five. But Priester and Owen Scott buried one more each for the Bears. And even the short stick D Mids were getting into the scoring for LR. Um at the 1136 mark, Coach Mitchell pulled Davenport and put in Aiden Lachlan. And he saved the first shot he saw. Saved the first shot he saw. Aiden Lochland should have got the. I don't know why he didn't get the start. Maybe he missed a meeting. Maybe I don't know if it's a discipline, everything, or or coach just had a feeling and let me start Davenport.

And like I said, Rush and Dixon were combined 21 for 36 at the dot. Bobby Davenport, 15 goals against on only five saves in 30 minutes, man. It's not a good day, Kevin. Uh Sloan Stewart for the Norrine Bears had himself a day, three goals. Owen Scott had three goals. Morgan Maddish with two goals. Cannon Wiggington, two goals. Jared Huff dishing out assists this year. He's doing more assists giving than scoring this year. He had two goals and three assists. Donnie Powell with one goal and two assists. Nate Serrano for a goal. And five other players had one goal each. Yeah. Matt Mancini, uh John Mink, the short stick D-Mid, had a good game. Uh, five ground balls, three calls, turnovers. So LR struggled a little bit at the dot, but because Davenport was struggling so bad at in goal, it didn't hurt him too much. And Owen Peters, 12 saves in goal, 46%. So LR goes to 10-3. They're seven and two in conference. And uh Anderson drops to 11-4, and they're five and three. And three in conference.

Remember, Merryville was number seven, and Rockhurst was number 20. And Rockhurst did not start off with a good season this year. Right? They lost games. Look at it. I had them like number seven. And this is funny, and Southern Fry laxed. I don't know if you saw their little thing on the their Kevin Smiling is exactly what they said. I was cracking up on that one. But that this game was crazy. First of all, Rockhurst was fired up for this game. They started out strong like they needed to. They had very good D, and their offense was clicking. One of the things they were doing was, you know, Maryville moves the ball really well. And the broadcasters basically said Rockhurst is not sliding. They're making Meryville have to beat their matchups instead of, you know, if you slide and there's an open man, they would get Maryville would get it to their guy. They didn't do that often. They were Rockville's defense was Rockers' defense was was being able to hold them. Like they they basically were able to do one one-on-one, man on man. It was three-one after one Rockers. You're like, okay, not that big of a deal. Rockers kind of controlled the tempo and the possession, but you're like, when is Maryville gonna come? I will tell you, you watched starting the whole game, but Brock Olilla, it's either Olilla or Olila. It's not Olila, like I've been saying for the past three years. So I'm gonna personally uh apologize to Brock's parents for getting that and Brock himself for getting that wrong. I had to uh DM the coach and say, How do you say his last name? Of course, I think it's Brock, I think it's Olila, but he was unbelievable that game, making tremendous saves. He ended up with an 80% save percentage, Danny. Phenomenal. And that was that, and their defense really controlled it. It was 5'1 at half. There were no goals by the Saints in the second quarter. Possession time totally favored Rockhurst. They were winning face-offs, and then they'd have long offensive sets, right? Where they if they would shoot wide, they would they would get the ball back, and they would just keep on doing that. And sooner or later that would come to a score, right? Because um because they just had it for so long. You just wear it on that defense. In the third, Shea Rayburn of Maryville on the out with a quick face-off win, he scores right in the beginning of the third to make it 5'2, and you're like, okay, here we go. But that was it for Meryville in the third. They scored one goal in the third quarter. Rockhurst continues to just do what they're doing. They've got different scores. Yarkovsky and and um they've got Yarkovsky, Jonah McConnell, other guys were just scoring methodically. I mean, you look at the end of the score, it was 11-5, it wasn't that great. But it was seven to two at half, then it was three in a row for the Hawks, so they made it eight-two with no, it was nine-two after three. I'm sorry, nine ended up being nine-two after three, only two goals by the Saints in the in three quarters. And I rock who would have thought that would ever happen. That Meryville would only score two goals in three quarters.

Okay, so let's talk about the D2 news. It's sad news. Dominican of California, the Penguins, have canceled the rest of their season. They had two games left. The press release stated they that they made a leadership change. They said given the timing of the changes and the health of the team, they will suspend competition for the remainder of the semester to focus on the health and academics of current student athletes while also beginning recruitment to grow and support the future of the program. Dylan Snyder is now the interim head coach. He was an assistant as they go through the transition and see where they go. Tough season for them. They were going, they were 0 and 11. They went from 47 players in 2025 or so to 25 this year. Bobby Grove, who was a head coach last two years, is now out. I feel for those players. I feel for those players that didn't finish the season, couldn't finish the season. Let's hope they come back stronger and better than ever based on what we know Coach Sammy built years ago from his club program to get it there.

Just because it was on my list first, that's all from past years. Their tournament is the 26th and the 29th of April and the 2nd of May. Six teams get in. Wingate definitely should have a bye at 7-0. They've got two games left. Newberry is at 6-2. They should get the bye if they beat Tusculum. LR is 6-2. They get a bye if they beat if Newberry loses and they beat Coker. Kataba 5-2, still plays Mars Hill and Wingate. If win if they win both those and Newberry or LR lose, they could move up in the seeding. Anderson is still there also in the mix. Now they're 5-3, so they're probably more around the fourth or fifth seed. And then you've got Coker, Tusculum, and LMU all tied and should all be tied at 3-6, and each going one-on-one against each other for the sixth seed. I don't know how they figure that out.

So that may be the difference that they go from in conference. CACC, April 25th, the 29th, and May 2nd. Wilmington's clinched the one seed. I think Chestnut Hill's got the two seed. Bridgeport, probably the three-seed because they beat Post. Post is probably the four seed. Holy Family, probably the five seed. They should send should end up four and four and same as Georgian Court, but they beat Georgian Court in conference. So I think that's the way it's going to kind of lay out. You know, we've done this several times. Since we've been doing this podcast for five or six years now, we've had the benefit, and it's been really cool to watch players grow throughout their college career. We've actually seen them as freshmen all the way to when they graduated. And tonight, it's no different. Four years ago, we were calling these boys the Fab Five. One has moved on, so now they are the fab oh that we call them the freshman five. I'm sorry. We call them the freshman five. And then when the season started, we called them the fab five. So there was a little trans from fallball to the first season, right? One of them left, so now we're down to the fab four. Which many people our age know what the fab fo the fab four are, right, Danny?

Yes. Hey guys, you know, the reason why we had you guys on is because of uh a lot of different reasons. But the biggest reason I think we're having you on is because of what you guys have done on an amazing perennial powerhouse in the Wingate Bulldogs. This team is a top 10 team every year in Division II. They're one of the hardest teams to play. Their offenses are prolific. And you guys came in as freshmen in that 2023 season and you all got on the field and started. And that's a rare, rare thing for a top 10 team in Division II to have four, maybe five freshmen starting. Matt, let me ask you: did you think that you'd get on the field as a freshman at Wingate? Did you think you'd get on?

I mean, definitely not. Even after having a good high school experience and everything, just I knew what I was walking into with Coach Boyle. Uh, picked Wingate for Coach Boyle and knew it was gonna be a grind every day, the way they they did things around at Wingate. So just being able to find a role my freshman year was the goal.

Did you think that you'd get on the field as a freshman? No, no way. I didn't think I'd be a contributor into at least sophomore junior year. It was it was awesome to get experience out there as a freshman.

And Kyle, you joined an attack unit that was pretty damn good and with uh guy named uh Willie Greco there that set all kinds of records. Did you think that you'd get on the field, especially with guys like that?

And Joey, as a as a freshman midfielder, you know, you had some good guys there. You had Lingosin and some of those boys on the field. Did you think that you'd get on the field?

And uh just glad that I did. Yeah, you guys all found roles, and you've all contributed like really fast into that freshman season. You all like it became roles. Now, what I love about Jackson and Matt PayPal is that you guys were going both ways as freshmen. You were going two-way, offense and defense. I mean, just to have freshmen doing that at such a high level was amazing. How did that feel for you, Matt? Because you were an offensive player in high school. I mean, like now you're playing a little bit of defense. What was that like for you?

Well, definitely never really played any D in high school at all. And then whenever Coach, uh whenever Coach Boyle uh proposed it, at first I was like, hmm, and then I was like, hey, I gotta get on the field and I gotta help find a way.

Yeah, and Jackson, same way, you know, like you, you know, you were playing two-way, and I and and you guys became like excellent clearers, the two of you, Matt PayPack and Jackson Grant, the two of you are just amazing guys when you have the ball to clear. You just do an amazing, amazing job. Jackson, what was that like for you to play two-way? Was it a little tiring?

Uh I I played a little bit of two-way in high school. I mean, somebody's got to get in. So, you know, you just know like can't leave your guys out like hanging. So somebody's got to get in.

Did you play together or you just know each other? Did you play against each other?

No, we played with each other on uh True Blue. Okay, travel ball. Yeah, you know, they club ball together, and then uh just kind of stayed in touch throughout there and the recruiting process. So we were pretty excited to come to school together.

That's awesome. So then I have to ask, and I'll ask you this, Jackson. I'll ask you specifically, what was it like when you all started fallball freshman year? Did you see something in yourself and and Joey and Kyle and Matt that you're like, hey, this could be something special? Or were you like, screw these guys? I'm gonna get on the field over them.

Like what no, no way. I mean, at that point, we were all just running around just trying to make plays. Like there was there was nothing, you had nothing to lose at that point. You were just going.

So yeah, I mean, and you're probably in like learn mode too. Is that is that correct, Kyle? Like you're just trying to figure out the offense and what where to do what you where you can fit in.

Now, let me ask you guys this. How was Willie Greco and Danny Riley with you guys? Because those guys had a lot of experience, put up a lot of a lot of points, uh, all of them both all you know, first team all-Americans. How were they with you? Did they take you under their wing and show you stuff, or were you guys like, we kind of know what's going on?

I think they saw our potential and kind of helped us out. But most of the time we were kind of playing off of them rather than like trying to be them. So like that kind of helped.

Like, there were a lot of times where I felt that they were asking us things, asking us what we were seeing, relying on us a little bit, and then from there using the feedback that we were giving to then be able to kind of quarterback our offense in a sense. And it was a lot of back and forth, and it was a really awesome relationship to have with those two. Um, they're super good guys and obviously amazing lacrosse players, and to just have them basically take us under their wing, like you said, and just kind of allow us to grow and do the things that we needed to do to become good lacrosse players without kind of being too hard or too much on us.

Hey, so I gotta ask you this, Jackson. Um Matt is now injured towards ACL. They just had surgery on. How do you think that affects the Fab Four? I kind of see him kind of like how you guys both were your freshman year. This his senior year, I saw him kind of as the glue guy. Like never makes mistakes, plays defense awesome, transitions the ball on offense, and then if need be, could stay in offense. Just like the glue to make sure that your offense coming from defense gets going. What would you say to that?

I mean, yes, sir. He definitely an asset on the field, but one of the one of the best locker room guys I've ever been, ever been a part of. So it's uh it's definitely gonna be tough, but we got we got depth at the midfield. We got two ways, so we're gonna still be getting up and down no matter what.

Yeah, but when he gets back there, he can still be the a glue guy off the field or in the locker room, which is critical as a senior and as a leader, right, Matt?

Definitely, definitely. It's definitely gonna hurt not being able to help the guys, but I'm gonna be helping still in any way I can, just having a good time in the locker room, making sure everyone's all right, having good days and everything, just like that.

So yeah, being that guy, being that teammate, being that number one, you know, root fan, and that's the best you can do. Matt, if you ask me, I thought you were at an all-American pace this year. I really thought that you were playing at all American. I spoke to your dad about it. Now, you come from kind of a long line of lacrosse players. Your dad played. Uh I can only imagine what he was like on the field because your father's a large man. And uh, and then your brother was at a Delphi, he was a graduate assistant at a Delphi, a lot of a Delphi ties there. And speaking of True Blue, how many guys are on True Blue that are playing for a Delphi right now that played with you guys in the summer? Right?

What a what a group, man. Because Luzzi was on that team, he's at Cornell, Galgano was on that team, he's at Delaware, Conley's on that team, he's at LIU. I mean, what a squad that was. What a squad. And and you know, you're playing against like great stuff in high school, like the high level. Then you go into college. What was the transition like? I'll ask Kyle first. What was the transition from high school to college? What was it like for you? Was it the speed? Was it the size? Was it what was it?

Um for me, it was both speed and size. Uh I'm from Georgia, so Georgia's ball only is only growing, but uh it's not the greatest compared to where are these guys from. So I think it was a bigger difference coming from me than them. Uh, but yeah, definitely speed and size.

And what'd you find the difference, Joe?

Um, I think the overall just maturity of the players on the field, um, the decisions that they made, uh, very mistake-free lacrosse, and obviously coming from a pretty highly talented area of lacrosse. Um, I got to see and play against and play with some really skilled players, and nothing compared to like the overall skill and like just overall maturity they had on the field.

So I want to ask Jackson something. We Matt kind of talked about he was gonna go to Wingate because of Boyle. Coach Boyle coming from Long Island, loves to recruit from Long Island. Joey's brother, Sean, played with my brother, and then coached my brother for my brother, my son. I wish it was my brother. I'd be a lot younger right now. But uh coach my son. So you come from a legacy, Joey, of of Wingate. So, Jackson, what was your recruiting journey like? And how did you end up picking Wingate?

Uh, I gotta be honest, Coach Boyle won my mom over off immediately. Um as an ex-marine, she loves the the hard-nosed coach. Like he's gonna he's gonna make you into a man, he's gonna make you into a good player as well. And she just loved that. And I mean, her opinion means a lot to me. So kind of just so there was no other choice.

That's awesome. That's awesome. Let me follow up with that question. So talk about then going from being recruited to being a freshman, Jackson, and now to being a leader as a senior. What has that transition been like?

Uh for me, it's been it's been trying to get more vocal. I'm not the I'm not the most vocal guy. I kind of just run around and just do my thing, but uh stepping up and being more vocal and getting in guys' ears when when I need to has definitely been the like a big step forward that I've had to take.

And then same thing, Joe Joey. What do you think about that? Going from what, you know, obviously you guys talked about, and I loved your answers of like uh fallball, your freshman year. Like, yeah, we're just running around trying to get on. Now you've got the maturity, you've got a higher lacrosse IQ, you are trying to now mold the next bulldogs. What has that been like for you now transitioning as a leader in in the program?

SPEAKER_03 1:18:53

Um, I think just building really good relationships with a lot of the younger guys, um, spending a lot of quality time with them outside of lacrosse and just making sure that they're enjoying their experience and uh, you know, just showing them that, you know, like doing the right thing on and off the field will matter a lot more than just on the field. And I think that bond that we create with them outside of the field carries onto the field a lot. It uh gets guys a lot more engaged and involved. So just been trying to focus on that.

Yeah, I think when the younger guys come in and they see the older guys are so bonded together and they're so connected and so close and do everything and they laugh and they and they cry and they go to class and they sweat together. I think the younger guys see that. And I think what Coach Boyle has built there over the 10 years he's been there has just been nothing short of amazing. He's just he not only does he get good lacrosse players, but he gets good kids. Gets good kids, you know, kids from good families and guys that do the right thing all the time. And it's just been great. But you guys have been in some barn burners of some games that people only dream about. Um I think about the double overtime loss to LR in the sack a couple of years ago when it hit Nick's Arnold stick and it went in the goal and and they tied it up a minute later. That was you know, if that doesn't bull goal doesn't go in, Wingate wins that and go and wins the sack, and LR was number two in the country at that time. Then I think about the double overtime loss to Tampa in the crown, which was an amazing game. And you guys were only sophomores in that game. Joey, I remember you tied it up late in the game, and uh, and it was in the pouring rain, and I'm like, look at these sophomores. They're just playing their butts off, man. And then last year, what Wingate was able to accomplish, you guys had five conference losses last year. Something that Wingate hasn't seen since Coach Boyle's been there, and you guys avenge all of those losses. You beat Newberry, you beat LR, you come back from 7-1 down from limestone to beat them. What was that little five, four, five games in the sack last year like for you guys? What was it like for you, Kyle?

Unbelievable, honestly. It doesn't even like I can't even fathom like what even happened. Uh it was kind of like uh one more mentality. Like we were road warriors, we're always on the road. We're all honestly, that was probably the closest time we've been with each other. Like everybody was super close, everybody was in it, everybody was like looking for the next one, and we played like a team, and I think that's like how we did what we did.

What'd you think, Matt? What do you think about that little you know, sack tourney last year?

It was unbelievable, and we had all those losses, and we knew we had to win it all if we wanted to make NCAAs. So we were just we our motto was just one and up. Let's just take it one game at a time, uh, not look ahead. And we were just playing 60 minutes at a time, and it really ended up working out, and we just were very close at that time.

What what a what a series of events that took place in that couple of weeks. It was just an amazing thing to watch you guys, and you won your first SAC you know, tournament championship, and I was it was nice to see these guys, you Fav Four, holding that trophy up, you know, in the pouring rain. I I was there and it was a really cool thing to see. Now you guys are undefeated this year in conference. Kind of took care of business in conference this year. Um looking at 7-0, undefeated, got a couple more games left. Um be a sack regular season champ. You'd have two trophies, that would be kind of cool, wouldn't you say, Joe?

Yeah, definitely. Uh it's been a pretty, pretty interesting and fun season so far. Sacks uh it's an unbelievable conference. Any given day, anything can happen.

It's an unbelievable conference, especially, you know, with with the you know the four teams. Even Catawa now is making noise. They're I think ranked number 11 in the country now. They really have improved. They've come up and you know, like again, they beat Anderson pretty bad that night. And uh Anderson took a slip this week, but you know what? They're still a really good team, and I think the sack tournament is going to be a gauntlet. But if you guys can hold ship, win out, you'll get that first round bye, you'll get that top seed, and you'll have the easier road. The easier road, but it won't be easy in the sack.

Let me ask, I'm gonna ask a question on that. So, based on what you did last year, part of that question is do you can can you take any of that as a carryover into this tournament? And then secondarily, what Danny and I talked about way back when in the conference preview, I think it's kind of played out in the sack, is that those top four or five teams, you can throw out the regular season record. You can throw out if you know you beat Lenore Ryan by five, and then you know, you beat Anderson by one. Doesn't matter. Anderson can come back and beat you, like you saw two games against Lenore Ryan, those are both stress-free games. Stress free for the team that won, not so stress-free for the team that lost. So there's there's so much parity at the at the top that in the conference tournament, really it's anyone's game going into that. So I guess my question is can you carry what how and any lessons learned from what you did last year into this tournament? And how do you feel about how do you feel about going in and approaching the tournament this year? Joey, you want to start it off?

Uh yeah, I think that um, you know, doing what we did in the tournament last year, given the circumstances that we were in, definitely shed a new light and like a new perspective on a lot of guys. And I think it allowed us to like realize what it really takes to win and like accomplish what we say we want to accomplish. And I think just being in those scenarios and those situations to begin with really allow us to stay calm, cool, and collected when things may be going south or when we're facing adversity. And uh, you know, we've been in situations this season where we literally at halftime were sitting there saying, you know, we've been in worse situations before, you know. Yeah. So not to freak out about it and just do what we need to do. And we all know what it takes to win. So I think it's just remembering that at the end of the day.

Well said, Joe. Kyle, let me ask you a question and be honest with me. Do you think the Wingate Bulldogs have played a complete game so far this season?

No straight up answer, no, right? No. I don't honestly ever. I don't think we played a single complete game or retire like four years here. Honestly. Like we thought we were a freshman year, but this this team is different. Um like we there's some games where we start out slow and end fast. There's some games where we start fast and end slow. So we don't really know what our like we know what our potential is. We just gotta make a complete game and see how that goes.

Could you imagine being 10-2, 7-0 in the sack and haven't played a complete game yet? That's pr that's a pretty good thing for a coach to hear, you know, his coach is waiting to see that that complete game. And I think it's in you. I think you guys can do that. Um, I think it's gonna come up, and uh it's been just a great run watching you guys play for the last four years and get on as freshmen and do the things you've done. And uh senior day's coming up. What they're all shaking their heads, folks. They all they all cannot believe that senior day is here. So here's the Fab Four. Started as freshman, did amazing things on the field for the last you know three and a half years, and now they're heading into senior day. How's that make you feel, Matt?

Yeah, I mean, I remember yesterday moving into uh our freshman year dorm. PayPac and Jackson were across the hall and like three doors down. Spence was the floor above us and like four doors down. So there was a lot of time and like a lot of memories just. been together and uh especially freshman year and just it was cool to grow with each other uh throughout the four years.

Kyle Spence, the senior attackman from Suwani, Georgia. As a sophomore, Kev, he was second team AllSack, honorable mention all region. As a junior, he was co-offensive player of the year, first team All Region, first team all sack, first team All-American. He currently, right now, sits at 86 goals, 149 assists, with 79 coming in the 2025 season. He led the country with 235 points. Are you kidding me? He set wingate records for points with 114 in a season and assists in a season 79, beating Willie Greco. Unbelievable young man. We have senior midfield Joey Moran from Lawrence, Long Island, as a freshman was third on the team in goals with 29 and fourth on the team in points. As a sophomore, he was third on the team in points with 26, became a man up sharpshooter. He had three goals and against number two LR in the sack tournament and he racked up 18 ground balls as a sophomore. As a junior, Joey was third on the team in goals with 51. He was the second highest scoring midfielder in the United States last year. Second team All-SAC, second team all region, third team all-American. He currently has 26 goals and he currently as a career sits with 128 goals and 154 points, which makes him the highest point scorer and the highest goal scorer midfielder in program history at Wingate. Congratulations Joseph Jackson Grant the senior from Conondaga upstate New York Dagu. Conondeguard Conondegua I'm not good with the Indian name he doesn't he doesn't he doesn't realize that he's in the firing round not you Danny. Now I'm in the fire round we always are as a freshman he went 22 points as a sophomore still went two way had 18 goals and 18 assists as a junior went primarily to offense where he put up 24 goals and five assists again on a team with that has a lot of people that can score he currently is the quarterback on that midfield from the top has eight goals and he's dishing out 16 assists. That's Jackson Grant. Matt PayPack, the senior MIDI from Wontau, New York, Coach Boyle said you are the heart and soul of this Wingate Bulldog team. That's what he told me you are the heart and soul and he can't wait to have you back for senior day I guarantee that you you help him a lot. As a freshman went two way and put up 22 points as a sophomore still went 22 uh uh uh played two way had five goals and two assists as a junior still played two way but more offensively as a junior where you added 10 goals six assists 38 ground balls my friend and eight caused turnovers this year before you got injured you had three goals two assists and 18 ground balls but in my opinion I think that you were playing lockdown short stick D mid and I really feel that you were on an all-American pace. Anyway, just you know again they were young kids trying to figure it out but you know as again Kev I I couldn't be more happier for these kids for the careers that they've had for what they've done on the lacrosse field. But look how cool they are together. They're like brothers you know like they're they they hang out a lot together and it was good to have them on. I I think they're I think they deserved to be on we spoke about them so many times they've been so many contribu they've contributing in so many ways and like even though Jackson Grant and maybe pet Matt PayPal don't have the goals and the assists it's what they do on the field 100%. In particular PayPack what he does on the field doesn't show up in the stat book.

Even with Jackson especially now that you figure that with with Matt being injured he's gonna be relied upon to transition the ball more because he's so fast. He doesn't make mistakes coming across not many people can keep up with him no button can he's got to be one of the fastest kids in division too one of them yeah yeah and so it was just you're right it was it was those two you got guys like Joey and Kyle who put up the numbers but like I said I looked at Matt this year as kind of a glue guy and I looked at Jackson always as like you he's kind of helping run the offense now from the mid he's up top. Sometimes when it's at Kyle it's down low but he's the one that's orchestrating a lot of things and it's because of his IQ and his consistency like he does not make mistakes.

Speed, athleticism all of that yeah he's been starting a lot of the offense from up top and uh again like against Belmont Abbey he was just phenomenal in that game he just just really looked like he looked like a Division I midfielder to me in that game. Again the Fab Four they're just amazing players all of them and they got to play on a great team for a great coach in a great program in a great state with great weather those kids made some pretty good decisions if you ask me. They had an interim coach for most of the year. He's a grad student player, Caleb Rivera. So not only do I give a shout out to the 22 on the roster, but to Caleb. We talked about when we talked to the Fab Four of the leadership and taking over as a senior. Think about that. Your head coach is gone. You become the interim.
