Intro
SPEAKER_10Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's Lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stentrum, and with me as always is the authority in all things D2 Lacrosse, Danny Moran. How's it going, Danny?
SPEAKER_08I am no authority on anything, Kevin. I'm not even an authority in my own home.
SPEAKER_10Well, you're more of an authority than me in D2 Lacrosse, which then we're two knuckleheads, so maybe that's not much. It's not raising the bar too much. Yeah, right. I'm doing well tonight.
SPEAKER_08How are you doing tonight in Northern Virginia, my friend?
SPEAKER_10I'm doing well. Still coming off uh that great weekend uh up in Gillette, up in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Missed having you there. I think all the fans of Delphi and Tampa, I never found the Tampa tailgate. They they missed seeing you. Uh, but it was cool. I got to hang out with Coach Novotny, Coach Barrett, Coach Mariano, Dan Mara from the CACC, Joe Reich, Wingate AD. They were all there. Okay. I got to talk to them. Got to spread the news of D2 Lacrosse. Talk to Terry LaFor Terry Foy of Inside Lacrosse, Scotty Royster, our guy, Lax Guy Scotty.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_10And Mitch Pelke, who did went to Lenore Rhine and the Delphi and did uh some videos on that.
SPEAKER_08That's right. The Ohio State guy.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, so it was it was it was I was spreading the D2 news to those guys. Look at you hobnobbing with the class. I was throwing their garbage away for them, basically. But uh that's a good one.
SPEAKER_08Well, that's fun. It was fun. That's good, man.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, it was it was a fun weekend, and I know we're gonna get into it. If you look at this weekend, first of all, the weather up there wasn't great until Monday when I drove home.
DII Championship Recap
SPEAKER_10But the best game, Danny, in my opinion, and I am biased, but if you look at the best, the games all weekend from Friday, the women's semifinals, and maybe you can see, say, Northwestern Boston College, which is a great game. I think hands down, the best game was the D2 final.
SPEAKER_08Oh, I think it was the D2 final, too. I thought it was a quality, quality, quality, quality lacrosse game, Kev.
SPEAKER_10You could not get any better. You called it that was going to be a barn burner. It was. It was an instant classic. When I look at this, some of my initial impressions, other than that, is like the amazing thing about this game is no one held an advantage. Sometimes you see games where they go on these runs and like, oh, Tampa's starting to pull ahead, and it's Tampa's game, and they've got the momentum. There was no momentum shifts. It was just down and dirty. You got like the two goalies, Renner and Terrier, and then you've got guys like Del Sandro and Gombold on the Tampa side. It the gate was electric and it just kept building an intensity.
SPEAKER_08Kevin, this was a game that was so well played by both teams. Um, super high energy, super high IQ, great defense by both teams. Really, really good defense play. Both goalies were outstanding. Dylan Renner was amazing. Conterio was amazing, made some big stops. I thought both sets of short stick D-mittis played their asses off. I mean, you know, their their job wasn't easy. There's there's studs on both sides of the ball there that, you know, these defenders had to defend. It was quite the day, man. And I just thought I it was everything I thought it would be. I said it was going to be a close game. I said it was going to be a one-goal game, and I also said it wouldn't surprise me if it went into overtime, which it did. Yeah.
SPEAKER_10And it was an amazing last few minutes in that game, and we can get into that. But that's it's exactly what you would want in a championship.
SPEAKER_08Oh, it was great, man. It was, you know, off the right off the get-go. I mean, Bradshaw scored right in the first minute of the game, you know, and I was like, uh oh, you know, Tampa's off to a burning start right away. And then Mikey Derning and Gibson answered. And then Ralph Bradshaw hit his first goal at the 336 mark. Then McDermott got his first at the 251 mark, and it was 3-2 Panthers after one. Pretty close, pretty good first quarter, high energy, kind of moving. Both teams, both goalies like making saves, both teams getting shots off. And in that second period, Tommy Ortega tied it up at three. Then Kesselring got into the mix, burying a biscuit at the 735 mark, and Tampa retook the lead.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, and at this point, I really saw Tampa's D starting to clamp down even more.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_10Like they really kind of shut out of Delphi for a while.
SPEAKER_08To go up four to three. Again, like these defenses were really good. Kyle Lewis finally got on the board in the second period, assisted by Braden Donnell in his only point of the game.
SPEAKER_10Great pass. That was a small window.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. It was his only point of the game by Braden Donnell. And Gordy Gumball did a great job locking him down pretty quickly. Played lights out. And uh when Kyle Lewis scored that, we were tied again. I mean, here we go. Another tie, another uh and then Tommy Ortega gave Tampa the lead with a berry and a biscuit, and it was 5'4 Tampa at half. Kind of low-scoring, defensive dominant.
SPEAKER_10Yep, going back and forth. And here's what I thought at this point, Danny. I kind of wrote a note that said, like, it was two heavyweight sparring with no one having an advantage and no one getting a knockout punch. And you're like, are they just still trying to figure each other out? It's not like they're nerve, it wasn't because they were nervous. You could tell these two teams were playing well. They weren't getting a lot, it wasn't sloppy play. They had some a little bit in the second half, had turnovers, unforced errors, but it was really like, are they just still trying to figure each other out and where to where they could capitalize on? And really what you find out in the second half, it it was a, in my opinion, it had to be a patient man's game. Like you had to wait for your moment.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, they were just trying to figure out, get, get a shot off. You know, both teams were able to get shots off. Yeah. But it was difficult to get shots off. There wasn't, you know, there wasn't like a boatload of shots being, you know, it was far and few in between. But both goalies, I mean, they made it so difficult for anybody on both sides. I mean, they just really settled in and were locked in both goalies and were making saves. And and then the third quarter, that's when Vinny McDermott kind of really opened things up a little bit. He tied it up for the Panthers when he buried one unassisted. Five minutes later, Grant Green for Tampa buried one. And a minute later after that, Davis Lindsey scored again, giving Tampa a multi-goal lead. Their first goal lead.
SPEAKER_10First time it happened in the game, 5-0-6 left in the third.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, it was 7-5 at that point, Tampa. Then Mikey Dernan answered again a minute later. And then McDermott scored his third goal to tie it for the Panthers. And then at the two-second mark, Vinny McDermott scored the most sickest goal. He was at GLE. He dodged, couldn't get by his man, re-dodged, got under his man. When he got under, the slid, the slide came. Yeah. He bet he somehow slipped the double team. I don't know how he did it. He got in front of the cage, was falling down, and as he was falling down, he let it go, and it got over Terrio's left shoulder. And Delphi led, and that was at what, the two-second mark of the third quarter. Right.
SPEAKER_10At the very end of the third quarter, and he goes up eight, eights. They go up eight seven. Their first lead since it was two to one.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, Delphi retakes the lead. Like I'm like, and now it's eight seven after three. I'm like, wow.
SPEAKER_10And you talk about I was talking about this earlier, like there was really no momentum shifts, but that had to give Adelphi some real confidence because they were always playing catch up since the first quarter.
SPEAKER_08You mean Adelphi or a Tampa?
SPEAKER_10A Delphi was always playing catch up. They were always behind Tampa after after the two to one lead, and then it was 2-2, and then it was always Tampa, and they would they would have to score one to tie it. You know, they A Delphi was always behind until that third quarter.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then in the fourth quarter, this was a really exciting quarter. Both teams played lockdown defense. Nobody really scored for a while. Davis Lindsay finally scored his second goal for Tampa, and we were tied again, Kev, at 8-8. But the crazy ending.
SPEAKER_10And here's yeah, here's what's funny, Dan. Before you go to the crazy ending, there was like a little over six minutes left when he tied at eight. And I'm talking to someone next to me, I'm like, whoever I'm thinking six minutes left. Yeah, they haven't scored a lot. I said, whoever gets a 10 or 11 goals wins this game. Because I was I thought for sure there would at least be one more and one more. It'd be like 9-9 near the end of the game, right? No, like you said, talk about lockdown. One goal in the fourth, Tampa scores it just to tie it up, and that's basically it.
SPEAKER_08Until the end of the game. Yeah, the the last two minutes of this game was as exciting as you could get. Here we are, we're tied 8-8. It's the national championship, it's two minutes left. Tampa's got the ball. They come down, they turn the ball over. A Delphi gets the ball, goes back the other way. A Delphi turns the ball over. Tampa gets the ball back again. Grant Green lets one go. Hits the pipe, Kev. Hits the pipe. Could have been a game winner. Yeah. Could have been a game winner. No. Adelphi gets the ball. After that, they they take it down the other way. Shoot, shoot wide. Terriel makes the save. And they come back the other way. Now it's like 30 seconds, 20 seconds. Zach Friend shoots one from like the eight-yard line. Renner makes the save. I mean, unbelievable save.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_08The ball rebounds in front of the cage, about two to three yards in front of the cage. Mad, crazy scrum for this ball. Including Dylan Renner. Including Dylan Renner, who came out of cage like two, three steps to come try to get that.
SPEAKER_10It's like he followed the ball after he couldn't keep it and it went out and it went out in front of him. You just see him falling after it.
SPEAKER_0813, 12, 11. Zach Friend picks up the ball and shoots it, and it goes in. Dylan Renner was just kind of getting back into the cage. Couldn't make the save. His body was in the wrong setting. But wait a second. Waved off. Tampa calls timeout. And the goal was waved off. Zach Friend's winning goal was waved off.
SPEAKER_10And and Danny, so I'm in the press box and we have no commentary, right? And and you're watching this, like you said, you're really watching the like the last two minutes. You're like, oh, oh, e uh. You know, you watch something that's in my seat. And when when Zach Friend shot that, you're like, oh my God. And then you I see Dylan Renner pointing and another Delphi person playing, and then you see the refs wave it off. And I figured it was a timeout, but I had no idea at that point. Because no one said anything. No one no one announced it to anyone in the press box what had happened. And I didn't see them call, I didn't see JB Clark call the timeout, right?
SPEAKER_08At first, at first I yeah, I didn't see JB call a timeout either. And at first I thought maybe somebody stepped into crease. Yeah. Because it just demands crumb in front of the crease. But no, JB called timeout. They had 11 seconds left. Now, you know, social media went wild with hey, how could JB call that timeout? It cost him a national championship. Well, you know what, Kev? I don't know, man. I think I call that timeout. I think I do. You know, I think, hey, I get possession of the ball. If I can stop the clock, set up a play. I got 10, 11 seconds. If not, we go into overtime, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_10Hindsight is 2020. Yeah, I know. And it's easy to be the Monday morning quarterback with it. Easy to see, especially when the ball goes in. And it was like you talked about it with me. It was a bang bang play. There was a scrum. I think that maybe Jay Coach Clark may have called that timeout before Zach Friend really had that ball, but when they still had possession, and then all of a sudden he turns around. So at like the the 12-second mark, right? And all of a sudden now it comes out. The timeout's been called or is being then called says takes a second, coach calls timeout, then the ref's got to call timeout. Right. Right? Zach Friend and scores within that time. And his shot was like, if you remember it, it wasn't like he picked it up and flung it behind him. He's like boom, boom.
SPEAKER_08It was like a just a total bang bang play. Yeah. That whole scrum, it literally was a four second, it was four seconds. Yeah. That whole thing, you know, the shot, the save, the rebound, the scrum, the pickup by friend, and the shot in. I mean, he just picked it up and shot it. And I was wondering if JB, you know, said to the reps, hey, listen, if we get the ball, I want to time out. Yeah. Who knows what they would have said? But I'll have to ask Coach Purdy what he would do in that situation. Yeah, that would be good.
SPEAKER_10But then we go, hey, we got 10 seconds. They do have 10 seconds left. They can't score. So we go to overtime. The first overtime in a D2 game since 2005 in the championship.
SPEAKER_08That's amazing. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_10That's crazy. That's how good this game is. And then a Delphi wins the face-off. They get a couple of takes. And then Coach Prudy calls a timeout. And there's like 220 left on the clock. And then it's it's I think Dunn has the ball. He takes a pass it to Kyle Lewis. Kyle Lewis sweeps across the the middle. Dodges, basically loses his defender. His defender, he he gives a juke, and the defender jukes too.
SPEAKER_07He beat his man.
SPEAKER_10And he beat his man. And he's hands free, going left to right. And score it. When Kyle Lewis has that much room, his hands were that much free, he's gonna score.
SPEAKER_08I'd tell you, I love the way that kid plays, man. He's just got an extra something, something in him. He's just a really good player. Just that the athleticism, but he's smart, man. He makes good decisions with the ball, and he can shoot the shit out of it. And what I like about Kyle is that like if the if the goals aren't coming, he'll dish dimes. You know, he he still contributes.
SPEAKER_10Well, the other thing, he he is in a way a throwback midi because he plays short stick D-Medi. He does transition. He's a Nick O'Shea is like we talked about, is that Swiss Army knife. Because he can play offense too, but you rarely see him stay on as long as you would Kyle Lewis in the sense of the offensive sets. Right. Kyle Lewis is the on the the first team first line for D for Middies on the offense. So yeah, complete player. I will tell you, Danny, and I wrote this, and I it's true every time I see an overtime game, especially a game like this, when there was no advantage. You just almost expected when Tampa got up that a Delphi would tie it. If a Delphi got up, Tampa was going to tie it. That's what I was expecting throughout the game. You hate to see anyone lose because I guarantee those two teams go on the field, tomorrow, Tampa could win.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. That was anybody's game. I mean, Tampa's a very, very good team, Kev. Like I was just down there a couple of weeks ago when they played Wingate. And I got to see them, you know, play first in live. You know, when you see them play live, it's a little different than watching them on TV. You know, I totally agree. And watching them on TV is great. I'm glad that we have streaming that, you know, technology has taken us to the point where I can sit on my couch and have a cold one and watch a D2 game, you know, and it's it's pretty cool. But, you know, just the whole game, everything about this game was as good as it gets. And I mean, D2 is real, man. And these teams could they could give some D1 teams a run for their money.
SPEAKER_10It was a really mistake-free game. There's only two companies all game, one on each side. There was yes, there were some unforced errors, some mistakes made, but you saw that in the D1 games, the D1 final. You saw Maryland do that several times in the D1 final. Look at this was this you could not ask for not only a better matchup, but the level of play. These players on both sides. It was there, there was I was I was so stoked after that game. I like I'm not, I didn't know what to do. Like, I'm what do I do I go to a tailgate? Do I go who do I find to go talk to about this game? Like there was so much that I just it was just unbelievable game to watch. And like you said, being able to see it live, you notice things like like little things, like guys like Nick O'Shea. Yeah, short stick D midis, you know, like and the short stick D middies, who, oh, by the way, we had on the podcast, like Pascarella in transition.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_10I mean, just amazing to watch these guys. Noah Gibson. He's got speed, Danny. You've got to watch him live.
SPEAKER_08Next little while it could go, and it's like a no it doesn't.
SPEAKER_10No, it doesn't, Danny. He has got a strange which you see him a lot is he because he's so big, he's gonna try to he's gonna try to bull bull dodge you. But he's got some, he's got some I was like, wow, I didn't he he moves faster than I thought he did. So that's what I love about watching it live. Like you said, you can't see how good these guys are, especially how they work together when you're watching it on the screen. When you watch it live and you see how fast that ball is rotating.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, the speed of the game.
SPEAKER_10It was it was great.
SPEAKER_08Again, you know, they it's division two, Kev, but it's as good as division two can get. I mean, these teams are good. There's all Americans on both sides of the ball, on both teams, uh, players of the year, uh, offensive players and defensive players of the year, just just stacked with just great players. And you know what? It's like an all star game when you get to it like that, you know. And yeah, that's what you want to see. You want to see good lacrosse. You don't want to see the blowouts like remember LR beat Mercy Hurst a couple of years ago in that blowout, and you don't want to see that in a championship game. This is what you want to see in a championship game. This is what I want to see.
SPEAKER_10Oh, it I was texting people. I was texting my son. I was texting Scotty Royster because he was somewhere else on the field and he's like, this thing's electric. This is amazing. You know, like everyone I was talking to, you were at a gig playing at a gig. Every person I I could talk to in text was all like, I'm on the edge of my seat. You can't get any better than this.
SPEAKER_08At the gig, there was a bunch of lacrosse people. Former St. John's head head coach, Jason Miller was there. Pete Cleary and his family were there. He was a former Marist, all American. His son is at Manhattan College. So they were all watching the game. They were all like, hey, you know, great year for Joe and great year for Wingate and blah, blah, blah. Who do you like in the game? And I was like, I'm playing. They're like, you're behind the drums today. I was like, yeah, I am. So it was cool. But they were watching the game. And they were giving me like recaps as it was. Oh, that's hilarious. That's hilarious. It was great. So as soon as I got home from the gig, I put the game on. I actually watched the game twice. That's how good it was. Oh, yeah. So for Tampa, they wind up 20-1 on the season. Davis Lindsay had two. Tommy Ortega had two. Rafe Bradshaw had two. Grant Green and Max Kesselring each added one. I really liked the way Gordy Gumbold played on defense. He just locked down Braden Danell and he was really, really good. He had two cross turnovers, two ground balls. Conatario, nine saves. Flores, pretty good. 12 for 19 at the dot.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_08For Adelphi, Vinny McDermott, the Massapequa high school kid, four and one in your game's MVP. Yeah. Rightly so. He had a great game, his best game as a Panther, without a doubt. Kyle Lewis, the beast, had two with the game and the game winner. And he had three ground balls and two cost turnovers. Yeah, he's just, he does everything, man. He's just that good. Mikey Dernan with two. This kid's only a sophomore, Kev. Yeah. A lot of these kids come back. McDermott comes back. Lewis comes back. Dernan comes back. Reese Bauer comes back. DelSandro. Yeah.
SPEAKER_10Delasandro with two ground balls, two cost turnovers. Reese Bauer with three ground balls, one cause turnover. Like we talked about, stout defenses on both sides. It was just great play.
SPEAKER_08Dylan Renner, 14 saves in between the pipes, was just outstanding. Game stats. Shots 41 for a Delphi, 35 for Tampa, 18 shots on goal for Delphi, 22 shots on goal for Tampa.
SPEAKER_10And they really improved on that because in the halftime, that's the one halftime stats that I got. The shots on goal were there was a disparity. Tampa had 16 and Delphi only had seven. So they and I I wrote a note, they've got to do better in the second half, and they did.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Uh turnovers, Adelphi had nine, Tampa had 14. And two of those turnovers came in the last three minutes of the game, which was like huge because Adelphi was got possessions back. Ground balls, Adelphi had 21, Tampa had 30. Faceoffs again, uh Flores was 12 for 19. And uh and Greaves had eight, eight for nine, eight for nineteen. Eight for twenty.
SPEAKER_10So yeah, they had uh Tampa had one person come in for the the and and didn't get it. It was over one, but right.
SPEAKER_08And both teams were zero for one on the extra man. So pretty close game, just a great game. Uh congratulations.
SPEAKER_10One error you made in all those all those stats you gave. Tampa went 21 and one, not 20 and one. Oh, okay. 21 and one. That's okay because I called Maryville, Maryland, about 12 times. That's right. So we always make mistakes.
SPEAKER_08But yes, unbelievable. So great game. I mean, I gotta give uh hats off to Tampa with a great season. I mean, again, Grant Green hit pipe at two minutes, could have could have been the game winner for Tampa. Um, and a Delphi winds up 19-1 and uh and and is your back-to-back champions. And I think it's the first time a Delphi's been back to back since 1998 and 1999. I think back to back.
SPEAKER_10Yeah. That long.
SPEAKER_08It's been a while.
SPEAKER_10Back when we were youngsters.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Yes, that's right.
SPEAKER_10And we had eligibility back then, too.
SPEAKER_08That's right. So, Kev, it was a great season. I can't believe it's over. It went by in the blink of an eye. It's just uh, you know, I'm I'm sorry. Now let me ask you a question. Which did you like better, Gillette or Philly?
SPEAKER_10Good question. Totally different venues. So Gillette has amongst all of it, like all these shops, hotels, restaurants. Yeah. If you're staying there, it would be great. I didn't stay there. I was originally gonna stay with some high school friends. I ended up having a hotel because they actually caught COVID last week, so I couldn't stay with them. I couldn't find a hotel that wasn't like 300, 400 bucks anywhere close. I finally found one in Natick like 35 minutes away. If you ask fans, I think they like Philly better because where I got to park because the media pass was very easy to get in the stadium. If not, then you have quite a hall sometimes to get into the stadium. And they did not have all the entrances open. They basically had one major entrance to get into the park. Okay. And so y'all had to funnel down into one area. So it made it a little bit difficult. The venue itself, inside the stadium, they're even. Both beautiful, beautiful venues to watch a game. You don't have a bad seat either in the lower or on the up next upper deck, you're not up in the nosebleed section.
SPEAKER_08Really, really good venue to see a game. Yeah, the last time I was at Gillette was at the National Championship, and they were building all those hotels and shops at the time. There was a lot of construction going on at the time when I the last time I was there.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, so it it is a very nice venue. I like a lot. To be honest, I'd probably like Philly better because it's closer to home. Yeah. It's only two and a half hours away versus seven.
SPEAKER_08And me being a New Yorker, we detest everything, Boston.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, that's that's your own fault. It was fun for me because I was back in my old stomping grounds where I grew up in a way near college and everything. So that was fun, I have to admit.
SPEAKER_08Anyone who's ever taken a kid to a morning travel game knows how important that travel cup of coffee is.
Adelphi Panthers
SPEAKER_10All right, Danny. That's enough talking about the game. Let us bring in the champs. Two years in a row, back to back, repeat whatever you want to say, the Adelphi Panthers. Yeah, Panthers. We have got a crew, which is awesome. We have Coach uh Purdy, assistant coach Volpe, Kyle Lewis, Vinny McDermott, Nick O'Shea, Braden Dunellan, Mike Delessandro, and Dylan Renner. Welcome, guys, and congrats.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
SPEAKER_06Thank you.
SPEAKER_08Congrats, Coach Purdy, back to back. How does it feel?
SPEAKER_06Uh incredible feeling. Uh certainly thrilled that we're able to get um the the W. Um You know, the win certainly was a lot different from our first win. Um you know, I was really it was a you know, a very different team just by the couple of key characters. It's been a different year this year. Uh, you know, we only came back with we came back losing four of our top scorers. Um and so we had, you know, a guy like Michael Dernan that, you know, scored whatever it was, 12, 5, 12 goals last year, had to earn 65 goals this year. So it sort of proved that, you know, there's a lot of guys that potentially can go out and get it done over the course of summer and and make themselves better to help us win games. And he's just one of those guys that did that on the offensive side, let alone what Volpe saw on the defensive side.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, it w I'll tell you, you look at that game, seven tie scores in the game. Even if you looked at it, it was wild. I was watching it, and they were, you know, Adelphi has some unfor unforced errors, then Tampa has some unforced errors. There was no real advantage. The matchups were so even too. When you've got a game like that, Coach Volpe and Coach Purdy, what do you what are you looking for just something to to try to change up, or are you just gonna try to be patient and wait for your your turn? It just seemed like you had to be patient on the offensive side because the defenses were so stout.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I thought from the defensive uh standpoint we just had to be patient and see what we were gonna do, uh if there was things that we were gonna have to change or not. Um we came in with a decent game plan and we spoke about it as a staff. And credit to the kids, you know, we made you know slight adjustment here and there at halftime, but it wasn't anything crazy. We just stuck to our principles. Um you know, guys did their jobs, that was really it. Um Deli was a freaking animal. I mean, it was wild to watch. He how he's not a first team All-American is criminal. Uh he was a man amongst boys out there, and uh he you know, he works his ass off every you know, all the time, and he really showed it on the biggest stage, and he doesn't get the credit that he you know deserves. And you know, uh Nick O'Kay and D Middle Cruz did a you know, they did a great job. They had we had a couple struggles earlier in the first half, but after that they kind of did they kind of settled in and you know did won their matchups and we really didn't have to adjust too much, and you know, they they worked, you know, and that Tampa offense has firepower. And you know, it's just it was a battle of two great defenses going at it with two good offenses, and uh it was a balanced game. Uh, you know, we were fortunately with it, we were the team that were able to get win the game, but you know, from an outside perspective, it was an amazing game.
SPEAKER_10Yeah. Totally, totally. But let me ask you, let's go to Mr. Delasandra. Let me you were wreaking havoc. I was watching you and Reese Bauer, it's like four number five, number five, number four. It was you put so much pressure on who you were defending, gave them no real chances, really, throughout the game. And and ground balls caused turnovers. What was that like? What was your mindset going in? And and and did you just start feeding off some of those early wins that you had on the defensive side?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so like the whole mindset was to not make it bigger than it was. Like, obviously, it's a national championship, but when you let emotions come into the game, then you're not gonna play up to the best of your ability. If you just treat it like another game and you go out day in, day out, like we've been playing this game since we were kids. It's just a game at the end of the day, and you just gotta play inside yourself and how you normally do.
SPEAKER_08Did you have the butterflies? Were you nervous, Mike? Come on, man. It's the it's the big game.
SPEAKER_02No, honestly, I I don't think I've been nervous to play a game since high school.
SPEAKER_08Really?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I try like I I have my same corporation for every game, and then I don't know, I just I don't really get the butterflies anymore.
SPEAKER_10That's amazing. I I don't uh I I'm not built that way. I think I'd be puking in the bathroom before that game uh going out there.
SPEAKER_06Let me let me switch it up to I'll jump in and I'll sort of speak of that. So Delhi is a player that spends uh a huge amount of time on preparation.
SPEAKER_09Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And when he goes in, he's confident about what he's gotta do. And it's about going out and doing what he knows he can get done. And there's an extreme amount of um, you know, teaching and instruction and work that goes behind the scenes that Coach Fulpe does day and night to help prepare these defenders to go out and get their job done. And I think the confidence they have in Coach Fope is is part of that reason why Delhi doesn't get you know, specifically if we're talking about him, need to get nervous because he knows he's just gotta go out and get his job done.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, Coach, but you know, I think everybody gets a little bit of the butterflies. You've got to get a little. Come on, man. It's such a big game, and you're at Gillette and you're looking up and you're like, oh my God, look at the size of the stadium. And there's gotta be a little something. But I'd like to talk to Vinny McDermott here, the MVP. Vinny, these guys have been here before. They're kind of like old hat. It was new to you. What was it like for you going out there? Yeah.
SPEAKER_11I I was nervous. Okay, we know. Okay. Yeah. Like I was I was like, I couldn't sleep the night before, and then I woke up at like 6 a.m. and like couldn't go back to bed. Uh yeah, I I was definitely nervous, but I I I knew we were prepared, so that's not why I was nervous. I I I was it was just a big game, and once I stepped on the field, like all that the nervousness like left my body.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, you just kind of just play at that point, right? Dude, you had one hell of a game. And that goal where you split, you were at GLE and you split that double team and get got into the front of the cage. That was an amazing goal, man. So congratulations on your MVP. Congratulations on getting to the Natty. And probably your best game as a Panther came in the national championship. What do you think about that?
SPEAKER_11Yeah, that probably was my best game this whole year, but uh I mean, everyone played good that game. There was a lot of guys that could have got the MVP.
SPEAKER_10Well, here's what's interesting, Vinny. I I'll give you a public apology on this podcast. I was riding down the elevator with one of your teammates, and I was like, I really thought Dylan Renner should have gotten the MVP. And he just kind of looked at me like chagrin. It is. Because I then I look at him like, well, Vinny had a great game too. And I went back and watched the game again, right? I just finished watching the game. I watched the two good goalies. I'll get to Dylan, I'll get to you in a second. But I watched your third and fourth goal, and if you look at when they came, you guys were down, and you you when you scored that third goal to make it seven to seven, and when you scored the fourth, the one Danny was talking about, you gave you guys a lead again. That was that was a precious situation. So my hat's off to you. I have to let you know that you deserved it. I'm just an idiot, just uh uh a knucklehead. I don't know what I'm talking about, so congratulations.
SPEAKER_11Thank you. Thank you.
SPEAKER_08Hey, Nick, you were outstanding uh at the game the other day. I thought you're what you did on the field. You know, you're you're the Swiss Army knife for this team. You're the guy. You play shortstop one game, you're at third base the next game, you're out in right field the next game, you bat and clean up. You really do it all for this team. And uh sometimes them short stick demons, they don't get the love that they deserve. Dude, how awesome is that for you to be there for a second time?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was honestly, it was it's the best feeling in the world playing on a stage like that, and just being able to walk off with a win is just it's unbelievable.
SPEAKER_08Now, be honest, were you nervous a little bit too? You know, Delhi wasn't nervous. McDermott, you know, he said, yeah, I was nervous, I didn't sleep. What about you, Nick?
SPEAKER_04I think it was I I wasn't too much nervous about the game itself. I was just nervous because it was my last game that I was playing. So I just wanted to make sure that everything went as planned. Like we played good, we called the W, and just like I didn't want to go off with anything but a win with my boys.
SPEAKER_08What'd you think of Tampa's offense?
SPEAKER_04They were definitely good, but um, I think our matchups were there. We were definitely prepared. We we have a great uh scout O that we go against and practice every day. They sit there, watch film, and they really just like play their part, even though they're not on the field playing their part. Behind the scenes, they definitely play their part and give credit to those guys because they got us ready all year watching their matchups, making sure that we were ready as a team, and they just everyone bought in. That's that's what it takes to be able to win a championship.
SPEAKER_10That's a great point, Nick. I was actually telling uh some friends I watched the game with, we were talking about that afterwards, about the size of the team and those you never see on the field, but those people contribute so much to your wins in Scout and in other things, maybe off the field, you know? And so I that was just a great comment. I really appreciate that. I have to go to Dylan, though. Dylan, you came up big again on the biggest stage, two years in a row. Now remember, last week you had we had you on. Danny was giving you shit for having a bad first half. You did not have a bad first half in this game. What was that like for you? Did you feel locked in to begin with? How pumped were you? I noticed how pumped you got out after some of your saves.
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah. Um, I kind of went into this game, you know, realizing that like most people don't really know when their last game's ever gonna be. Um I knew going into this that no matter what, this was gonna be it, win or lose. So I was like, I'm gonna enjoy the moment. I'm just gonna have fun playing. I think when I kind of play stress-free and I kind of just enjoy myself, uh, I think it just helps me kind of loosen up and be excited for the moment rather than a little nervous. Um, I was fortunate enough to be able to play in last year's, so I kind of knew what was expected going into it, what I needed to do in order for us to win. Um, and with that being said, like I said, I was only I had 60 minutes left in my career, so I was like, I'm gonna make the most of it. Sound absolute plays playing.
SPEAKER_08You were outstanding. You were outstanding, young man. I was like, damn, Renner's on fire today, kid. You were making some really good stops. Actually, I thought both goalies played great. Yeah. Again, and I thought both short stick, I thought both defenses really, really stepped up. Uh, Braden Dunellen, you had a tough matchup with Gordy Gumbold. Uh he was pretty good. I mean, um, but you had that nice assist early in the game, and um how did it feel for you? You know, you're the sophomore, the second, second time there. It's an old hat for you, man. You're thinking this kid's gonna be back here again next year, Coach Volpe, Coach Purdy. He's he's already thinking about next year.
SPEAKER_00It was uh it was very just fun to know. Play the biggest stage with all your boys. We've been preparing all your kids at this moment, and we're just happy we got the job done.
SPEAKER_08All right, let's go, let's take those last two minutes, the last two minutes of that game. Each team had a turnover. Grant Green hits Pike with two minutes left. What a tie would have given them the lead, right? They come back and another turnover, Delphi gets the ball, they turn the ball over again, Tampa comes back, Zach Friend takes that shot, it gets saved by Dylan, it jumps out in front of the cage, mad scrum in front of the cage, Zach Friend comes out and bang, scores it, but it's waved off because JB scored it, called a timeout. Unbelievable. Everybody was like, what just happened? Now, I never played this game, never coached this game, but been around it long enough. I think if I'm the coach, I think I make that timeout too. What about you, Coach Purdy? Do you call that timeout in that situation? That unsettled.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so that's a great question. Do I call that timeout? I would have um let the official know that as I did when we were going into our last. Timeout. Be ready for my timeout. Be ready for my timeout. If you look at the video, I was at the half field line when we had the ball in our in our um you know in our last set, ready to call timeout if we needed it. Uh I uh uh to answer your question, I I don't know if I would have called timeout, but you know, if you watched that play and have seen it too many times, you basically had Reese Bauer fling it in, you know, fling out a ball to get rid of it and went right into his six. There was barely any time. I I almost feel like he was calling timeout before the head. Um I think he just I think he decided to make that timeout call prior to them getting it because he wanted that 12, 13 seconds left on the clock to run a play. Uh I I don't think I would have called timeout at that point. No. The answer is is, you know, I've I've had some good timeouts and I've had some bad timeouts, but I'm not sure, you know, once I saw the goalie out that I would have called timeout at that point.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it happened so fast. It was such a bang bang play. And I don't know if uh JB had the uh visual to see that Dylan had come out of Cage. He did.
SPEAKER_06He did a pretty good video to show that he did. But again, you know, listen, he thought that what was best for his team uh was they call timeout. We we actually like to, you know, we sometimes like our guys that with 10 seconds to go, you know, let's let's go for it. Those are the sort of drills we do all the time. You know, you got 10 seconds to go score, you go get it done. So, you know, we somewhat I'd like to think we believe in our plays to run that play and and and have that uneven situation to be able to pick it up and score it. And we've done that this year.
SPEAKER_08Right. I mean, a lot of uh social media questioning uh Coach Clark's you know timeout in there. And personally, I thought it was a good timeout. You know, you get it 10, 11 seconds, you get to stop play, you get to set up your offense and set up a play with 10, 11 seconds left. I I like that call. I don't know. I'm just I'm just a guy with an opinion. I I never played the game, you know, and I I don't know what protocol would really be in that situation. Again, I think I think I I I think it was a good timeout. I don't know, but it cost them a game, you know. Yeah, well it cost them a national championship.
SPEAKER_10Well, you know, maybe Adelphi could have done something with 10 seconds left at the face-off dot. You never know. But let's go to the man who finished it, Kyle Lewis. You had a day, you had a day, my friend. Not only in critical on transition, you played on the defensive side, you helped on that side, and you had the game winner. What was going through your mind when you got that ball and started to dodge?
SPEAKER_05Well, it was kind of crazy. You know, props to Coach Kat for drawing that play up to a T. But um I knew what I had to do. We had a play. He said, you know, we're gonna drive up from X. Me and Braden were gonna exchange, um pass the ball to me, and then he's looked me in the eyes and said, You're gonna sweep across and put the ball in the net. And um, you know, I did. But I'm not put in that situation without Finn McDermott having the game of his life, you know. He he decided to go off and keep us in that game, four goals, one assist. And you know, I've been saying it since since high school that Vim McDermott's that guy. And he doesn't get the praise because his his stats aren't there, and um, you know, we knew we knew it was gonna happen. No one in the no one in the country could guard him. So he uh he stepped up, had a great game, which allowed me to um go in in overtime and finish it up for us.
SPEAKER_08That's great, Kyle. You're always giving your teammates props, man. I I I dig that a lot. But you know what? You're a pretty damn good player yourself. I mean, what you do out there on that field, you know, since you've been at a Delphi, you've just been a real I like watching you play. I like the style that you play. I like your hustle, your size, your speed, your, you know, your unselfishness. You know, you're willing. There's been games where you've had maybe one or two goals and like three or four assists where you're you know, you're dishing dimes instead of scoring. And you know what? You're one of those players that will do whatever it takes for his team. And I I love that about you. I really do. Thank you.
SPEAKER_10Well, if you look at this Zoom call right now, Danny, this is really it looks this makeup of this team and the coaches just encapsulates the entire team. If you look at the different players and the positions that they play and how they play and how they actually communicate and react to each other, even on the on the podcast or when you've seen them play. I mean, this is a true team and a true team effort. And I think I want to thank all of you for coming on. Congratulate you again for the repeat. It was an awesome game. I will tell you, I talked to Terry Foy, I talked to uh Mitch Pelke, who came to your campus, I talked to Lax Guy Scotty, all about D2 that day. And when you you guys and Tampa delivered for I think the best game of the weekend.
SPEAKER_03Appreciate that. Appreciate that. Yeah, thank you. Thank you.
SPEAKER_08Again, congratulations, guys. Thanks for coming on the show tonight. Enjoy your summer. Dylan, it's been great to watch you play. Nick O'Shea, it's been great to watch you play. Thank you. And I get to watch McDermott and Ellen Lewis and Delasandro again. I get to watch those guys again. Hey guys, again, congratulations. Great job, great game, and uh just appreciate you coming on and joining the two knuckleheads from the Index podcast. We really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_01Shout out to uh JB Clark, Ryan Sullivan, and that coaching staff and the Tampa team because they were a great opponent. They were classy on the field, it was unbelievable. And one of their players at the end of the game led us in prayer. And that young man, I'm not sure who he was, might have been the biggest man in the stadium that day to just do that. So to whoever that player was, I think it was either 32, 34, 36, something in that realm, my hat goes off to him.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he I'll jump in and echo that. He led that. And, you know, I as I said, you know, to many, many uh reporters along the way here, that game could have gone either way to either team, and we were fortunate to come uh away with a victory. And for the season to be finished off in prayer, uh, you know, I gave that guy a hug after he finished and told him, you know, what a great job he had done all year round. So I'm sure that's it's a testament to Coach Clark and his coaching staff to have a kid like that to be able to stand up and do that in tears.
SPEAKER_08That's amazing. That's awesome.
Final thoughts
SPEAKER_10Two years in a row for a Delphi. Two years in a row, they're on before the game with us and after the game with us. Great, great group of people, really enjoyed talking to tonight, and you know, like Coach Purdy said, it really could have been anyone's game. They ended up on top.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, it was anyone's game, and I really appreciate everybody at Delphi, the coach and staff, and they've just been great with us, Kev. Yeah. They come on our show, they help us out, they get the players to come on with us. They've just been so dynamite and and and being involved with the Indecrease podcast. I mean, they've been really dynamite, especially Coach Coach Volpe. He's just a great guy. I really like him a lot. Coach Purdy does amazing things at Delphi, and I'm just very appreciative of them. I really am.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, and I have to say, I'm appreciative of a lot of the coaches' staffs who who answer when I email or text. I mean, I got talked to Coach, like I said, talk to Coach Novotny, talk to Coach Mariana for a whole quarter during the semifinal games. They all treat us really, really well during the season, and my hat's off to them. It really makes our podcast season go so much better. All right, well, let's move on to shout-outs. Last one of the season, Danny. Do you have any?
SPEAKER_08I have a bunch of shout-outs today, Kev. Um, the first thing I'd like to shout out is to all the players that came on our show this year. We had a great mixture of players. So just wanted to thank a lot of our guests who came on this year.
SPEAKER_10That's awesome. Do you have any others? I've got just one big shout-out. Um, no, I don't have any others. Well, that actually was like one big shout out split up into three parts. It's like the I've got one question split up into 72 parts. It's like political. Actually, yeah. No, you're keeping people on the edge of their seats. I loved it. Those are really great shout-outs. It was great having them on, you're right. And it was so much fun this year splitting that up. And I'll have to tell you, Danny, I've already had requests. Like, when are you gonna have me on as a guest analyst? May need to see some swag from some of these people before they come. Yeah, shake them down, Kev.
SPEAKER_08Shake them down.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, this producer doesn't make that much money on. In fact, I lose money, and you lose money on this podcast, too. But that's not true.

The Turnbull outstanding attackman of the year goes to Braden Dunellin from Adelphi. The Don McLaughlin Jr. outstanding midfielder. Kyle Lewis from Adelphi. SPEAKER_10And the only one you missed was the William Schmeiser Defensive Player of the Year, Reese Bauer, Adelphi.
SPEAKER_08There's just too many Adelphi's in there, Kev.
SPEAKER_10Like we had a we almost wanted to skip a few. It's like, is this this is on repeat here?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, those guys, looking at Delphi just pretty much cleared the board with the best players in the country on their team, huh?
SPEAKER_10They did. Unbelievable. Unbelievable list. All those players, I swore we we talked about each one of them at some time during this podcast.
SPEAKER_08Absolutely. 100%.
SPEAKER_10I and I can't believe it, Danny. This is it for the year. Unbelievable. This is our last episode.
SPEAKER_07Figured this would be epipo for tonight.

SPEAKER_10It has. And for the 2025 season, Danny, I think that's a wrap.
SPEAKER_08That's a wrap, Kev.
