Intro
SPEAKER_01Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's across. I'm your co-host, Kevin Sentrum, and with me as always is our conference preview prognosticator, Danny Moran. Hey, Danny.
SPEAKER_02Hey, Kev, how's it going in Northern Virginia tonight? What's happened?
SPEAKER_01Oh, you know, it's just typical January. Here we are, January 8th, recording this one right now, getting ready for our last preview prior to the season starting.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, season's around the corner, man. I'm excited.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Got a couple of good couple of flights booked already. I'm ready to go, man. I'm excited.
SAC Preview
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I'm sure most people can guess which one if they do it by the process of elimination that we're talking about today. But I'm not sure everyone's going to remember that this conference sent three teams to the NCAA tournament last year and two to the Final Four. Yeah, it's a badass conference, Kev. And of course, we're talking about the South Atlantic Conference, the SAC. Yeah. The SAC.
SPEAKER_02Oh, what a conference, huh? Yeah. Doing my homework on this conference. I just can't believe the eliteness of some of the teams in this conference.
SPEAKER_01They're going to have a lot in the top 20, in at least our top 20. I'm sure in the US ILA top 20 as well. In our top 20, it'll be interesting to see what you've got. I think there's going to be at least five in the top 20. And there may be a lot of there will be at least three in the top 10.
SPEAKER_02Great more.
SPEAKER_01I totally agree with you. Just look, just like you said, doing the homework here, it just stacks up that way. No kidding. So let's start off with the national champs because they deserve it. Lenore Rhine Bears.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the Lenore Rhine Bears, located in Hickory, North Carolina. Kev. Beautiful little town. You've been there. I've been there. It's a nice little town, great campus. Coach Greg Paradine, 2023 NCAA Division II National Champs. They put a beating on Mercy Hearst for the national championship.
SPEAKER_01A beaton. They did. And here's what's interesting they won as the fifth seed, as you remember. And I am sure Coach Peradine used that to his advantage because all last year, when we talked to him, we talked to Victor Powell, they kept on talking about not being respected and getting that fifth seed because they basically, except for Tampa in the tournament, they mauled their opponents.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they were close. They were 18-3 overall, 8-1 in conference. Their only losses were to Wingate, Tampa, and Limestone in the SAC Championship. Yeah. So it's it's crazy. Like they lost the NCAA, uh, the SAC championship. They lost in that game. Right. This conference is crazy, God, crazy good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And and you can we'll talk about it because they went Lenore Ryan went 8-1. Wingate ran the table in the conference. Yeah. But couldn't do anything in the conference tournament or in the NCAAs. But we're gonna get to that. So let's continue with Lenore Ryan. Let's first of all talk about their 2024 out of conference. They've got Barton, Belmont Abbey, U Indy, Tampa, again in Savannah, Georgia, same as last year, and a Delphi.
SPEAKER_02That's a good, that's a good out-of-conference schedule. You know, Tampa, Delphi, Undie as well. Although I don't think U Indy is going to be the same U Indy as they were. I I don't think so. I don't think so. But but that's a good out-of-conference schedule for LR, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then if you look, they've basically got everyone returning on D, including three All-Americans, Victor Powell, Nate Ashley, and Colt McCracken. And Colt McCracken is critical for transition play as a two-way mid. He's a good player, man.
SPEAKER_02Victor Powell's a beast.
SPEAKER_01And don't forget Pennsylvania in goal, man. Well, I didn't get to the goalies yet. Yeah. Pennsylvania returns, and his and his backup is Nolan Hoffman. And he's no slouch either.
SPEAKER_02No, that that defense is stout. That's deep defense. It was stout, probably top three defenses in the country last year. And basically everybody comes back on defense.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, look at Rob Pensa Benny's numbers. 8.1 goals against average, 62% save percentage.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. You know, Hoffman got the start in the beginning of the year, and then Pensa Benny came on and just played lights out, man, for the rest of the year. He really had a great year. Um, we had him on our show last year when LR was making their move. We had him on, and you know what? He talked about how he had been there before, coming from another school and and having that leadership role. And he and it wasn't nervous and nerve-wracking for him. He was he felt very comfortable stepping right in and taking over that role. And he did a great job. And you know what? They got John Paulison face off, and it's just a you know, Joey Mason. They got a bunch of good guys, man. Right. Just that's on defense.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but they've got some big shoes to fill on offense. Just look at MIDI. Riley Say and Bryce Reese graduated. And at attack, they lose Miles Moffat and Toren Eccleston. They're number one and number two scores. Torn Eccleston had 15% of the team shots and 11% of the team assists last year. Yeah, he's an amazing player. Huge, those two, losing those two. I calculated between the two of them, they had a total of 167 points for their team last year.
SPEAKER_02Eccleston, Moffat, Reese, say, and Venazio, between the five of them, scored 181 goals last year. Okay. They're all gone. They're all gone, Kev. They're all gone. So now other guys got to, you know, step up and and then take over those roles.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they've got uh Tommy Aguilar, Will Canada, Evan Voss returning, as well as Kyle Hatcher and Donnie Powell. Those guys are all gonna have to step up. Coach let us know that they added four grad transfers: Ryan Duncan from Lafayette, Cam Magalotti from Holy Cross, Jonathan Bennett from Towson, and then on the attack side, casen Dillon from High Point. So all D1 players. All D1 guys coming in.
SPEAKER_02Hopefully, that they can they can find a way to um learn to play with each other quickly.
SPEAKER_01That's my note, Danny. They're gonna have to assimilate those transfers into the offense quickly, along with and play well with guys like Evan Voss and Tommy Aguilar and Will Kanada and Donnie Powell and Kyle Hatcher. You know, those those guys know the system. These guys have got to come in and and assimilate in.
SPEAKER_02Evan Voss was young last year. You know where he's from? Powder Springs, Georgia, Kev. And he had 29 goals and 29 assists. Will Kanada, like again, this team was so deep last year. Yeah, guys, guys scored for days. Will Kanada, he's from Waxall, North Carolina, by the way. He uh had 30 goals and 15 assists. And Tommy Aguilar had 18 goals and 11 assists. All these guys are double doubles, right?
SPEAKER_01And we're saying they have to step up their production.
unknownExactly.
SPEAKER_02That's how that's how freaking deep LR is. Hey, you know what? I think they're gonna be a very, very good team. Top three, maybe maybe number one in the country to start off in the preseason. Who knows? I mean, but they're that good. At least defensively, offensively, those new guys, they're all D1 guys. So what does that mean? That doesn't mean nothing in the SAC. It doesn't because there's D1 caliber players all over this conference, Kevin. All over this conference. And some of these teams that LR is gonna go against in conference and out of conference are no joke. Right. No joke. So again, can these can these D1 transfers learn to play with each other quickly? And not be a ball hog, not saying, hey, I was a D1 guy, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, this is my, you know, I can I can win, I can do this, I can do that, instead of playing team ball because LR moves the rock. Right. They move the ball around quick, you know, and they're just a fast team, they are attacked quickly, you know, they're just a really well-coached team year in and year out. Hey, Lenore Ryan's been to the out of the last three NCAA championships, they've been to two. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, and oh, by the way, oh, by the way, I'm sure Coach Paradine is looking at it like, okay, we may lose a game or two during the season. But what we want to get to is winning the championship again. And they had the blueprint last year, just like you said, they lost to Wingate in Tampa in the regular season. They lost to Limestone in the SAC championship, but they then, after beating Tampa in the NCAA first round or quarterfinals, they just killed every other team they play.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and they destroyed Rollins and then, you know, then it was Mercyhurst in the championship out in Philly. I mean, they were just a great team last year. Really, really good team, Kev. Like a division one players all over the field, all Americans on both sides of the ball. They're just a jogger knot. They're they're gonna be top.
SPEAKER_01It's tough not to have them at near the top. It's impossible. I don't think you cannot have them in the top three in one of those spots.
SPEAKER_02Right now, maybe I'd I'd have to put them at one until somebody can knock them off a show show differently. But yeah, we shall see. We shall see. But the the Bears are looking tough again.
SPEAKER_01They are. Here's another team that's looking tough, and they're the sack champion tournament champions from last year, and that's the Limestone Saints.
SPEAKER_02The Limestone Saints, located in Gaffney, South Carolina. Brendan Storrier, the head coach, does a phenomenal job there. They were the SAC tournament champions last year. They uh had a couple of losses. They lost to Rollins 13-11. They lost to Wingate 19-14 at the Crown, and they lost in a really good game to Anderson 15-14 in overtime, and they lost to LR in a really, really good game, uh, 18-17 in an overtime game, which was a great game. But they were 16-5 overall and 6-3 in conference.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, here, and here's what's interesting, Danny. 6-3, and what Coach Storyer emailed us when we asked for input for the conference preview. He said they want to compete better in conference play this year. And yet, all right, in conference play, they they lost three games, but they got to the SAC tournament championship and won convincingly. They beat Angel 20, they beat Anderson 2010, beat Wingate 22-15, and beat Lenore Ryan 14-8. And it wasn't then they lost to Lenore Ryan in the final four. So they are gonna be tough. Get this. This is what Coach Storier also told us. They returned 93% of their goals, 97% of their assists, 94% of their points, 87.5% of the ground balls, 84% of face-off wins. Defensively, they're a year older and are gonna get better. They're covered, one of their cover guys that wasn't there 22 2022 is returning. He said, and this killed me, we need to get we need to clear better than our 89, 89, need to be at 92, and we make sure our ride is at a higher level because teams cleared at 77 of the time. Yeah, he wants to get better at the at clearing and and riding, and they are not far off. They were ranked 14th in the nation defensively.
SPEAKER_02Great defense, great defense. They have a really good defense. Um they have some great players. Mike McGarry last year was the first team All-American out of Wilmington, Delaware, 49 goals and 27 assists. They have Zach Terry Jr. this year, 85 goals last year. Are you kidding me?
SPEAKER_01Mike McGarry is a is a junior too. Both both of them are juniors, only juniors.
SPEAKER_02Right. Right. Carter Bland, yeah, 32 goals and 35 assists. He's just a numbers, man. Boy, he just puts up numbers big time. You know, Chris Erneston, all-American honorable mention. I mean, they got all Americans over there. Tim Lander at faceoff. Uh Jack Beachley, junior defenseman out of Stevensville, Maryland, had 50 ground balls and 14 cause turnovers last year, Cap. They got a good team. Yeah. Limestone's good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they lose, they lose the number three points get her Carterbrand. He's actually gone as well as Carlos Sam, Noah Reed. Yes. But but you'd mentioned the ones they're returning, and add in there Chris Erneston and Nate Sennez, and and Jason Tomford and Austin Lamro on offense, and then on D. They're really returning mostly everyone, as the as coach was pointed out. Everett Campbell, Mark Tantillo, Jaden Terry, Corey Lyons returns in goal. You know where he's from? Where is he from? Reading, Massachusetts. There you go. Up there close to Boston. Yeah. Get this, Danny. This is two years in a row when I looked at their stats and how much they crushed the opponents. They had almost 300 more ground balls than the opponents last year. And they took 330 more shots. Yeah. It's limestone, man. What do you expect? Yeah. Slimestone. And they play at a pace that last year you saw, and I have to go back and look at their turnovers. You know, they they look sloppy now and then when I watch them play, but I think they like that chaotic play because it gets people off their mark. They play very aggressive, both on offense and defense. There's a balls are flying all over the place from a ground ball perspective. And so, yeah, they turn it over, but they create problems for other teams. Yeah, they're a tough team. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Just tough all around. They got players that can play. They got players that are aggressive. They're big, they're strong. They have great stick skills, high IQ. It's limestone, Kevin.
SPEAKER_01And they're losing practically no one this year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they're going to be a really good team. Top three again. They got a good out-of-conference guide. I don't know, kind of on the easy side of the street. Yeah, they're out of conference.
SPEAKER_01Out of conference is St. Leo, Florida Tech, Florida Southern, Lander, Lander, North Greenville, and Flagar. So, you know, you look at some of the SSC games, especially Florida Tech and Florida Southern. Look at St. Leo took them, only lost by two goals from them last year. So although that looks like it is favorable to limestone? It is. It is, but they still have to play those. There's teams in Florida Southern, St. Leo, uh, North Greenville. They're they're gonna give their best. They're gonna bring their A games.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know what? It's limestone. When limestone comes into town, people want to beat them. They want to beat limestone. Yeah. And you know, like when we talk about uh Lemoyne in the North, I think people talk about limestone in the south. Gotta beat limestone. You know, limestone's been the jogger knot over and over and over again, as long as along with Lenore Ryan, but limestone's been right there as well.
SPEAKER_01Limestone's for a longer period.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yes, 100%.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, maybe because limestone is uh has a program longer than than Lenore Ryan, I think.
SPEAKER_02And and JB Clark brought brought a lot of championships to Limestone.
SPEAKER_01So they're a storier as assistant, so that would tell you something right there.
SPEAKER_02They're used to winning, they're used to having good players, you know. They they get players there, man. They get Canadians, they get guys from all over the country and all over Canada to come down to Limestone and play for Championship.
SPEAKER_01They use the transfer portal, they get D1 players coming there just like Tampa does, and just like Leno Ryan did this past year with four of them coming in. So they're gonna be a tough out for any team, and they're gonna win the majority of their games again this year.
SPEAKER_02I think top top three, top five team in the country. I agree. Just based on paper.
SPEAKER_01Now, here's another team that loses practically no one. And when they did lose someone, they get they brought someone in that fills the gap immediately, and that's Wingate.
SPEAKER_02The Wingate Bulldogs, located in Wingate, North Carolina, right next to Monroe, about 35 minutes, 40 minutes south of Charlotte. There, coach Tim Boyle does an unbelievable job there. Ever since he got there, that team has just been unbelievable. Now, last year, they were the SAC regular season champs. Nine and oh, ran the table. They ran the table in conference. They looked very good, and they were 12-3 overall. And you know what? They returned just about everybody, Kev. This is a dangerous team, I think, this year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they they lose Damon Lingossen as a MIDI and James Cotkamp at the X, but they do have Dylan Rupprick who returns at X, and they brought in a mid-year transfer freshman from Linenwood. So now we see some of the turnover that Linenwood's going through, Brian McCarvey. Yeah, you know, the I think I don't know how Brian's gonna do. You know, he's a freshman, he's gonna have to, you know, he was a he was a D1 commit playing now D2. So you know he's got the talent, but he's got to get in the mix. And so, and they've got Dylan. Dylan he's gotta get to campus, you know.
SPEAKER_02I'm sure Rupert's not too happy about that. Yeah, but he did well. That's the college game. That's the college game. They're always gonna bring in guys.
SPEAKER_01I I'm a firm believer that having more than one at at faceoff is critical.
SPEAKER_02Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. I agree with that. So let's see what happens. Uh, Dylan Rupert's gonna have to step up. He's probably gonna get the nod. Who knows yet? We'll see. But he at least he has the experience. He's a sophomore that this year. Yep. So, but you know what, Kev? They bring back a lethal offense and a lethal defense. I mean, I look at this team and they bring two of the best players in all of Division II, okay? In Willie Greco and Danny Riley. Yep. Yep. No question.
SPEAKER_01There, there is no question in that.
SPEAKER_02No, they're two of the best in all of Division II. Riley is unbelievable. He might be one of the best players I've ever seen in Division II. He can sling it, boy. And what I love about Riley, he's out of Smithtown, New York. They they grow a lot of good lacrosse players out of Smithtown. He had 57 goals and 27 assists. But you know what? He had 40 ground balls and 18 cost turnovers. He's a rider, man. He rides, he rides hard. Sometimes he goes into the box, he rides so hard.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that that's a uh actually one of my points is they were in the box, wing gate, 25 times and 25 minutes more than their opponents. They're aggressive. Sometimes they're aggressive, but sometimes when they get out of sync, they start, they start to get a few penalties. They start to and and Danny's one of them. Now, Danny rides, I mean, you want it's such a quick, it's such a fine balance, Danny, right? You you want those guys to ride like that and put it on there. You just gotta be able to, I don't know, I pull it back at the right times. It's tough to do, right?
SPEAKER_02You know, sometimes those calls come, you know, sometimes those calls come. You know what I mean? And sometimes those calls are unwarranted. Sometimes they are. But look at Willie Greco, 49 assists, 39, 39 goals. That kid, attackman of the year, first team All-American. Riley's a first team All-American.
SPEAKER_01Then you got guys like Mark Cadett, Cottage, Joey Moran, Kyle Spence, Aiden McMahon, Jackson Grant, Caden Castle. The list, especially, I mean, Kyle Spence is at attack, but the other ones are all middies that contributed significantly, not always in, you know, tons of goals every game, but at the right time, right?
SPEAKER_02You know, these kids were freshmen last year. They were freshmen on an outstanding team. Okay. So I was calling them the fab five freshmen last year. You had Moran, who had 30 goals and six assists. He was the third leading scorer on Wingate as a freshman midi with those two attackmen. Then you had Kyle Spence, who was phenomenal. And he uh it says nine goals and 13 assists, but that doesn't show you what how he plays. Right. He plays hard, he knows how to play. Caden Castle, same thing. Jackson Grant, nine goals, nine assists, but 33 ground balls. Matt PayPack, another freshman that really contributed. Then you had Aiden McMahon, like he said, 14 goals, 16 assists. Mark Cottage, 20. They had 28 players in the scoring column, and seven of them were double digits. This team can score points, Cap. They're good. Yeah, they're good.
SPEAKER_01And then on defense, do they lose anyone? They're close D's all intact. Peyton Farley, Nick Darnold, Johnny Salomone. All American. Joe Carnage, all American LSM. For LSM, and they also have Naberto de Hoyas, who was also another LSM that contributed a lot last year. You got Trent Collin Connolly at short stick D Midi. 50 ground balls and 11 calls turnovers for Connolly last year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, he played the wing really well. Yeah. He's just a good player, you know, solid, strong, fast.
SPEAKER_01I got cube. Then you've got John Atoli who who plays both ways and plays a lot, played a lot of D mid last year for transition.
SPEAKER_02He sure did. He played a lot. And you know what, Kev? They came up a little bit short, I think, last year, Wingate. They they had the ingredients to go all the way. And they ran the table in the sack, which is not an easy thing to do. And I don't know, man. I don't know if they lost their legs at the end of the season or just lost some steam at the end of the season, but like they lost that game to you, Wendy.
SPEAKER_01That was in the first round of the NCAA, and then they lost to Limestown in the sack. In the sack semi. They didn't even get to the finals. Yeah. So I expected them last year to be in the conference finals and at least going to the quarterfinals in uh in the NCAAs, in my mind.
SPEAKER_02I think that they expected that too. And they fell up, fell a little short. So I think that the Bulldogs of Wingate are going to be a team to really watch because they have all the ingredients, Kevin, with Greco and Riley returning. They're the two best in the country at the at in attack. They're the two best. I don't know if any two better than them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they really do not lose a lot of offensive power and nothing on defense. And so then you look at goalie. They lose uh John Capone, who had a great season last year, but they picked up Thomas Sullivan from Belmont Abbey. Third team All-American last year.
SPEAKER_02Top 10 in the country. Top 10. I think he was ranked number eighth in the country last year. Goals. Goalies.
SPEAKER_01He's good. But now look at their out-of-conference. I find their out of conference really interesting because I think I think it's a really cool mix. Florida Southern, Mercyhurst, which we're glad to see that one's still on the boards. We talked to Coach Keeley about that, right? That's good to see that Coach Hurst is still playing them. Maryville, which I find really intriguing. Yeah. Mount Olive, and then Tampa in the Crown Classic.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'll be at that game. Yeah, I'm going to try to get there too, I'm thinking.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and they get LR at home and they get limestone at home. So that's huge. Yeah. You know, and and they're at Anderson and at Newberry. And I think those two teams are going to be very tough as well, Kev. Yeah. But the Bulldogs, the Bulldogs have all the ingredients to go to a national championship. They came up a little bit short last year, and I'm sure that that pissed them off. They were right there. And they had they had it for the taking. They had it. And for whatever reason, whether they were tired legs or whether they just whatever it was, they just didn't perform at the end of the season like they performed in the beginning. I think with Greco and Riley coming back, it makes it, it's going to be tough. They're going to be a top three team. They're an elite squad. I would call this squad an elite squad.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yep. I I then my note here says I'll read it to you verbatim. They are stacked and improved on their roster. Top three preseason, but they need to finish. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, just think the five, the Fab Five freshmen from last year. Just think about they're going to be bigger, stronger, faster, coming in as sophomores, year under you know, Coach Boyle, year under this belt. I think those guys are going to really improve. I'm really looking forward to watching Jackson Grant play. A kid's a good player. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, I agree. Uh they they are going to be tough. I tell you what, the those top team, those three teams right there. I'm not going to lie, I'm still winging. We talked about it when we started go through the NE10, right? You start going down and you're talking about a Delphi and St. Hayes and then Pace and then you know, and you you get the same thing here in the sack because you get now to this next team that I've got on the list. Let's talk about Newberry.
SPEAKER_02The Wolves. Newberry Wolves, located in Newberry, South Carolina. Uh head coach Nick Cotter. They were 11 and 5 last year and 6-3 in conference, Kev. They were a good, good lacrosse team.
SPEAKER_01They improved on their record from 2022, even. And they were they beat Mount Olive, Belmont Abbey, and Lynn. They beat Anderson in conference and only lost to Limestone and Wingate, each by two.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Newberry was ranked last year. And I think they were like got to 13 or 12, if I'm not mistaken. They got up there. And this team, Coach Cotta really, they have an elite attack unit. They're just a really good squad, very well coached. They're right there. They're right there.
SPEAKER_01So even get this. This is when Coach sent us uh his email with his information. He has brought in three new coaches, all with championship pedigree. Miles Moffitt, O'Reilly NCAA champion. Curtis Corley, Maryland NCAA champion in 2017. Wow. Jeremy Phelps coached at limestone during the 2019 championship run.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Tell me he doesn't have those guys getting his guys thinking what they need to think to be a champion.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, these coaches know what it's like. Now, now it's up to player execution, you know, that type of thing. But they got a lot of players coming back. Jimmy Osorio comes back to St. Anthony's kid, St. Anthony's High School. That high school is one of the best in the country, Kev. They put out all kinds of great lacrosse players, 38 goals and 20 assists. Uh Baker Westmoreland, 33 goals and 16 assists. They lose their top score, Scott Reed, though.
SPEAKER_01I had Scott Reed coming back.
SPEAKER_02Do you? Yeah. You might be right. You may be right.
SPEAKER_01I thought I had losing Briley Maxwell uh and their as number five, but their top three are coming back. And they even have Curtis Buckta. Yeah, Curtis Buckka forgot about him. At 24 goals and nine assists. So they forgot about a lot of offensive firepower coming back. And maybe I saw Scott Reed. Maybe that was in the note that coach gave us.
SPEAKER_02Briley Maxwell at 26 goals and 13 assists.
SPEAKER_01They lose him. Oh, okay. He's gone. So, but you know, Reed, Asaria, Westmoreland, and Bookta. That's you know, geez, that's over 100 goals right there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Really good stuff. And then on D, they they lost Brock Strong, but they returned Jack Travassos. He had 59 ground balls and 28 cost turnovers. David Squires, Caleb Mallian, uh, and Christian McClure. Now, he did not start on D, but he played in 16 games with solid numbers. And they get a D middy back, Owen Harrison, who had 26 ground balls and 50 cost turnovers.
SPEAKER_02What about Kobe Rogers?
SPEAKER_01Does he come back? The East Ice lip kid. Yeah, they get both Kobe Rogers and Connor Bates return for face-off.
SPEAKER_02Dude, Rogers is 6'4, 210 pounds. Faceoff kid. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01He must hate the state uh having to stand up and not be.
SPEAKER_02They were good, man. They had 40 shots. They averaged 40 shots per game. They're like 63% on man up. Like they were really good on the man up.
SPEAKER_01Their assist to goal ratio was 59%. Another team that shares the rock. They are they saw improvements last year on offense and shooting percentage and shooting efficiency, and made strides on defense and limiting their opponent's scoring efficiency. So that's a dangerous double threat with those two things. And you see they're bringing back. It only seems like they're going to improve. They lose their goalie. Uh Ryan Earl, Rylan Erler, but Jackson Von Eschen and Nolan Downey returned, and they both had a lot of minutes last year. So I'm not really sure they're going to see a drop in the cage at all.
SPEAKER_02Kevin, they had an elite attack unit last year, but they were kind of young on defense. Okay. And I think that's where their little trouble starts. But all those kids come back, you're stronger, you're better. New pedigree with coaching there now. Cotter's got them ready to make that move, man.
SPEAKER_01Is this the this is my note? Is this the year that they topple one of the big three?
SPEAKER_02Well, they got what it takes. Yeah, they got what it takes. They got players there, man. And then they were, as far as I'm concerned, away from both Wingate and Limestone. Uh that's a team I don't want to play. You know what I mean?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't want to play Newberry. Imagine going to Newberry and playing them at their place. It's going to be tough. Yeah. It's going to be tough. So Newberry is one of the teams in the sack that's going to be ranked again, Kev. They're one of the top 20 teams in the country.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And here's another one that I don't think anyone wants to play. And it's going to be ranked, in my opinion, and that's Anderson.
SPEAKER_02The Anderson Trojans, located in Anderson, South Carolina. Coach Albert Mitchell will be on the show with us tonight, if I'm not mistaken. Um, Anderson was 12-6 last year, six and four overall. Um, another really, really, really good team. Lots of young players, uh, players that can high IQ players, guys that can shoot the rock, good on defense, just solid all the way around. What Coach Mitchell has done in such a short period of time.
SPEAKER_01Three years, Danny. They had another big improvement last year, and I don't I don't think we didn't expect that from him. They start off 5-0 and beat Emory Riddle and Florida Southern, and then they lost uh to Rollins in game six, and then they went on a five-game win streak again, including Limestone, and then they lost to Newberry, uh, North Greenville, Wingate, and LR. But they are really strong. Now, here's what's interesting, though, is who they lose. Now, they return a lot. Don't get me wrong, they return a lot. I don't but the big one that they lose is Cam Weeks, their face-off specialist, first team All-American, face-off player of the year, you know. And in my opinion, and it'll be we'll we'll talk to Coach about this. In my opinion, last year, you know, Cam Weeks was got injured a lot. He was such a great player, but he got when he was injured last year, even though they had the other face-off guy came in and he played really well, he was still at 50%. It just seems like they weren't in sync as much as when Cam Weeks was in there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, Cam, you know, injured that he was amazing, Cam. He's he's an amazing young man, amazing player. He just gets the balls. Even when he was injured, he would still take face-offs and win. He would yeah, but then he and then hobble off the field. Yeah, yeah. I felt bad for the kid, you know. He was just balling out and he wasn't 100%.
SPEAKER_01And I think that's why they weren't in sync because when he would win, he would bring the ball and he was healthy. He was an added offensive player in the mix.
SPEAKER_02Well, again, you know, faceoffs are tremendous in the game of lacrosse, especially if you want to be an elite team. You need the ball, Cav. You need the ball. And Cam was the best of them all as far as getting them the ball. He was at what 80% or something, 70%. He was like over 70% or something like that. He was just insane. And now he he's not gonna be coming back. I think injuries have gotten the best of him, right?
SPEAKER_01And I but the one thing I would say is they lost him in season, right? Yeah, yeah, and now they've had a fall ball to get used to not having him and how you're gonna play. And now they've got the they've got this January to get ready because they bring back a lot, Danny. They bring back all three starting attack, three starting D, all LSMs and short stick D middies. Yeah, they get back Joey Heckel and Hunter Klosterman, their two goalies. Now, Joey Heckel, Klosterman took over for him mainly because Heckel was not 100% all year. Imagine goal. Yeah, Klosterman did good, though. He was third team all sack. Yeah, he did good. And then they also bring back Peyton Jefferson, all American, Logan Gaddis, all American.
SPEAKER_0228 goals, 40 assists. He likes to share the rock. I like that kid. He can play. Matthew Rogers. 45 goals and 13 assists as a freshman. He scored like what 140 goals in one game? Yeah. It was like jokes is like, that ain't gonna continue, buddy. Just it, just be careful. We had him on the show. We're like, what the heck? He's like, I don't even know how I did it. He was fucking, he was hysterical. And the other freshman Badron.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_02SAC freshman of the year, Cal.
SPEAKER_01He got better and better and better as the season went on. 56 goals, 20 assists as a freshman. Kim just balled out. They are loaded again this year. Yep. Ethan Pratt's gonna take the face-offs, I think, this year, right? I think so. I think so. We'll see. I think they've got they'll have a few that probably play, but you know, they they had also kind of like they had a few guys after Cam got injured are trying to figure that out and how they were gonna do it. They I know sometimes they put in an LSM in there and they do other things, and um, and that's not a bad thing to do. I think they've got they had time this year now to figure that out. I think you look out for Anderson this year again, and really I have this the the same. Can they I think they can replace Cam Weeks. Let's see what they look like and how they do.
SPEAKER_02Chase Robertson on defense. Chase Robertson on defense. He was great. He's a three-year starter for them. He's really, really good. He had 54 ground balls and 20 calls turnovers, Kev. They're gonna be they're gonna be a solid squad, they're gonna be another tough out. I I just and yeah, they get Tristan Kirkham transferred from Tusculum. Tusculum's top scorer has transferred in. I mean, he's at a Langley, British Columbia, Kev, Tristan Kirkham. He at Tusculum, he's accounted for 103 goals, 27 assists in his three years there. So the kicking plaque.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh yeah. Well, he like you said, he was their top scorer last year, right? Points and goals last year. So yeah, he's gonna make the minds. Yep. Now, just to round this out, their 2024 out of conference is I think favorable for them as well. Young Harris, North Greenville, Emory Riddle, Rollins, that'll be a game. Florida Southern, that'll be a game, and Lander. Yeah, a little favorable for Anderson. So they I think I've got them in my top 20. I haven't figured out exactly where, but I've got them in my top 20.
SPEAKER_02They better watch out for Rollins, though. Rollins is gonna be tough. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so Anderson, I think, is gonna be ranked. I think they're gonna be a top 20 team. I don't know about top 10, but I would say a top 20 team. So now that's five teams that we discussed in the SAC already that we think are gonna be ranked and formidable squads in the NCAA division too. Yeah. So the sack is lining up pretty tight, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it is. And I think these other teams are now that we're gonna talk about are the ones that are gonna be starting to build uh for that. And some of them could be pretty close. Let's talk Mars Hill, the Lions. They have a new head coach in Josh Coons. He was the Maryville offensive coordinator. He takes over for Coach Joe Turner, who is now an assistant at Queens. Yeah, D1 program there. They were in 2023, they were four and twelve and one and eight in conference. I would say probably that one of their signature wins for them last year was beating Tusculum 15-13. Yeah, I agree. Um, but you know, they so they're they're still a program that's building. They've they've obviously they they had Storier for a couple years, they had Turner for a couple years, and now they've got uh Coach Coons.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so they've had three head coaches in the last three years, you know. So yeah, it's it's you know, in the last four years, I should say. Four years, yeah, if you look at it that way. That that takes a little, you know, that but that bumps the team down a little bit. There's no continuity there. So now with Josh Coons coming in, hopefully he can get this team back up to where it used to be. Mars Hill used to be a really, really good team.
SPEAKER_01And you know, coach told us when we had him on the on the podcast that what Storier and Turner has built as far as players there, he's got a great core. They lose their top score on Trevor Kennedy, but they return Austin Stroud, Brandon Woodward, and Cole Ross. And you look at Brandon Woodward, he had 25 goals and six assists. He also had 23 ground balls and five cost turnovers.
unknownYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Austin Stroud, 19 goals, 29 assists. He's out of Bristol, Virginia. Is that anywhere near you?
SPEAKER_01It is, it's just west of me. It's it's part of the northern Virginia. It's it's in the DC uh what we call the DMV. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so that's where Austin's from. And Cole Ross added 14 goals and six assists.
SPEAKER_01AJ Howland, Andrew Defoe on defense. Yeah, their defense, they're returning there, looks like their entire core of the defense. Ben Clark, Cole, Pickle, Andrew Defoe, Liam Murray, and Bo Bitzer.
SPEAKER_02Andrew Defoe's from Midland, Ontario, Kev. He had 40 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers. Yeah. So and Jake Lynch, he's from Apple Valley, Minnesota. And he had 51 ground balls and 27 caused turnovers. Pretty damn good year last year for those. So that defense is going to be better. Yeah, they're going to be a more tight year.
SPEAKER_01They're seasoned, experienced. They've got their goalie coming back, and Steven Smith, who had 56% save percentage.
SPEAKER_02Right. And you know, we'll see what how coach coaches them up and see where they go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I and they they improved in some things. Their turnovers were still a bit high advice opponents, but they they're clear. Percentage improved to 83%.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They improved their goals against average down to 13 uh goals against average, but their goals per game were only at 9.7. So that worked on that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they had they struggled scoring goals last year.
SPEAKER_01And they were in the box a bit too much last year.
SPEAKER_02So it comes with a young team, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. But they've got a good roster at about 39. And I think, you know, I don't think I don't think they're going to compete with the big boys this year in in the sack. But they if they keep showing improvement, you know, let's see what Coach Coons can do over the next couple years.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's what I was just going to say. Could Coach Coons gonna, you know, he's gonna need a year or two to get his players in there and really work his system. But if you've ever been to Mars Hill, have you ever been up there? It's nice. Up in the mountains in North Carolina, not too far from Tennessee. You get some ski, you can snow. It snows up there, you get some skiing going on. Not too far. I like that area. So Mars Hill, I think they're ready to, you know, they're they're right there, ready to make another move. They just need to get some players in it. Coons needs to just get the continuity going again with this with this university. Yep. Yep.
SPEAKER_01So let's move on to Kataba. The Indians. In 2023, they were three and ten and three and six in conference.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Coach Murphy's second year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they had a tough go their first year, but you gotta think about it. Coach Murphy had to rebuild the roster. He told us at times they were only dressing 10 offensive players for practicing games.
SPEAKER_02How can you compete when you have that kind of number? You know, you can't practice clearing, you can't practice certain things, you know. It makes it hard.
SPEAKER_01But Murphy's a good coach, and he's got a lot of things. Yeah, and he's got the he's got the roster up to 46 this year.
SPEAKER_02There you go. Well, it's not gonna take them long.
SPEAKER_01No, you know, they they lose Jackson Braswell, Joey Linder, and Matt Mitchell on offense, but they do return Frank Citrone, Jordan Dash, and Garrett Sime. And Citron and Simi are only freshmen last year. So they have a little bit of an overhaul on offense. Coach says that five of their six attack move on, but they says that he's they've added some athleticism at the midfield and at the attack. You know, they their fall ball's gone well, they're sharing the ball really well. So, you know, it's it's in a it's going to be an incremental improvement. Defensively, though, they return pretty much the entire starting group. LSMs, defense, D mids, goalie, and added some depth there as well. So I think on the defensive side, they're going to be good. Offense is what's going to be somewhat the question mark.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we'll have to see what Coach Murph does with the mic. Again, it's only his second year there. Yeah. So it's going to take a few years. Like we, you know, any coach, I think, that comes into a new program or s or transfers from one program to another, always takes a year or two. It's not like JB walking into Tampa where he's got studs on both sides of the ball. Right. You know, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, he had to he had he had to rebuild. I mean, he had to do that. In fact, coach, a quote from the from Coach Murphy having a full fall with the team was great this year, especially having assistant coach Will Urban here for the first full fall was great. He started last November and didn't get much time with the team before we started going. So both coaches in place, full fall ball, you know, right when they show up on the door, right? All the way through, they're gonna improve because of their roster depth and what they were turning on D. It just depends on how much they improve. And you know Coach Murphy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Actually, do know him personally. Yeah. Um, at a conference schedule, they played North Greenville, Mount Olive, Belmont, Abbey, uh, Barton, Southern New Hampshire. They're gonna play a northern team.
SPEAKER_01I love it. Yeah, that's the game I'm looking forward to because that's on two mid-pack conference teams going at it. Yeah, that should be good. Yeah, and and Virginia State. Yeah, if I got it, if I got it right. Yeah, you do. That they're playing them late in the season, April 13th. Right. So that's a good schedule for them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, should be good. I'm yeah, I I like Coach Murphy. I think he's a really good coach, and I think he's a great recruiter. Again, only his second year up in Salisbury there for Catawba. So let's see what Murph can put on the field together this year.
SPEAKER_01Yep. And now here's another team with a coach is going into a second year, and that's Tusculum, the pioneers located in Tusculum, Tennessee, Kev.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and uh that coach you're talking about is Coach Rodney Tapp.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and he came in mid-fall ball last year. They lost a lot of depth on the team, and the coach basically went, you can read it in the way he wrote it to us. He's ready to change that this year. He's got he brought in in the first full year of recruiting, brought in 26. The roster's now at 41. And you know where Coach Tapp is from, right? One of the reasons he had trouble was the whole visa issue. Yeah, he has 17 Canadians on the team this year. He's got he was omnipotent Canada team, Coach Tap.
SPEAKER_02He's got a direct hotline to all of these junior junior lacrosse squads that are just filled with great players up there, mostly attack men. And so I would expect nothing but him having a pipeline of attackmen uh from Canada come down.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and here's his quote. This kind of tells you why he's ready for the change and get things going. We will be much better than last year between the lines, but the ability to scrimmage and practice goes back to depth, Danny. You talked about that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Last year we could not even ride or clear with our numbers. The kids are good, but we'll need some seasoning and man weight to hang with the top of the sack. I love that. But we should be much more competitive with the rest of the conference. And I think that's what he's looking at, right? He knows he's still building there. Yeah, that he can go toe-to-toe with all the mid-pack teams. That's a huge improvement. Look at their out of conference for for this year. Young Harris, Alabama, Huntsville, Monteval, Lander, CSU Pueblo, and Adam State. It's those middle ones, all the peach belt ones, are going to be really tough for him. But otherwise, I think you know, young Harris, they're going to be able to hang and probably win CSU Pueblo and Adam State. We'll see what they can do. He got those games late, April 9th and 11th. So he'll already have had some sack games played by then.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. He does lose uh their top three scorers. Yeah. But you know, that's gonna be tough. But you know what? Again, he's got he's got players to come in this year. Wesley Phillips comes back, junior attackman. He had 17 goals, 19 assists. Uh their D Midi Bryce uh Gimbal out of Richmond Hill, Georgia, comes back. Nick Drenos, senior LSM, had 25 ground balls and 10 calls turnovers. He comes back. They were very young on offense, and they struggled to score goals, Kev. But I think it's gonna I think it's gonna be different for Coach Tapp this year.
SPEAKER_01They're gonna need a lot of flesh blood on offense, but you know, they return, like you said, a lot on defense. Nick May, LSM, Nathan Frazier, Nolan Ross, Devin Bowen, Bauer Swiston. So they've got a great core on D. It'll really depend on what they can do offensively, and does their defense really carry the the day for them? Yeah. I think that they're gonna have to rely on their defense, I think, to really get them some of those conference wins.
SPEAKER_02And you know what? Just them playing in the sack is gonna get them better. Just them playing in that conference.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yep. Now, here's a team that I think can be dangerous this year in the sack. We talked about a few of them already. Anderson, Newberry. This may be a team a little bit, maybe one, a half a step or a step below them, but it's Lincoln Memorial. I knew you were gonna say that. Danny, they went seven and nine last year and three and six in conference. That was a huge improvement in overall and conference wins from that.
SPEAKER_02Lincoln Memorial University, the rail splitters, Kev. Yeah. I think I think the rail splitters came from uh uh Abraham Lincoln speech, if I'm not mistaken. Uh but anyway, they're located in Harrogate, Tennessee. And coach Joe Wilson, he's really making changes up there.
SPEAKER_01Well, we remember when we talked to him in the years past, when after 2020, they had such a drop in in players after COVID, they were down to maybe 20 on the roster. And he came in, the coach left, players left. He came in and really it was a total rebuild. And now he has the roster at 52, Danny.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. He's really done a great job, Joe.
SPEAKER_01His top four scores are returning. Yeah, Rhodes Conroy, 36 goals, 19 assists, and that's improved production from the year before in 2022.
SPEAKER_02You know where Rhodes is from? Where Kalamazoo, Michigan. I love saying Kalamazoo. Well, who wouldn't, Danny? Who wouldn't? Kevin looks at me like you're an ock lad.
SPEAKER_01I was drinking water too. I could I almost spit it up when you said Kavamazoo.
SPEAKER_02Rhodes had 36 goals and 19 assists. Gavin Reed from Franklin, Tennessee, 34 goals and five assists. Danny Pearl from Beaver Creek, Ohio, Kev, 19 goals and 12 assists as a freshman last year.
SPEAKER_01And well, Gavin Reed still was a freshman too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So they're young, but they did well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then everyone on D returns Dylan Ricketts, Nolan Culbertson, John Lombell, Ashen Wilson, Matthew Woods. They and then if you look at their team stats, they're at 11.8 goals against and 10 goals per game, but that was a marked improvement from the year before. Shots per game are up to 41.9 from 30.3, Danny.
SPEAKER_02That's a big improvement. And I bet you they'll improve on that this year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Faceoff went up to 51%, Vice 44, 40% in 2022, and clears are up to 84%. Vice 74% in 2022.
SPEAKER_02Hay Hayden Berry at the face-off, he did well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. This team continues to improve and also build depth.
SPEAKER_02This is going to be one of those teams again, Kev. The LMU is going to be one of those teams. Like, I don't want to play them. Right.
SPEAKER_01I mean, they have a shot. I don't think I'd have them in my necessarily my top 20 preseason, but I would not be surprised if they if if by the end of the year they're ranked. If this turning point, or at some time during the year, they're not ranked for a week or two.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Would not be shocked by it.
SPEAKER_02I wouldn't be shocked by that either. So LMU's right there on the cusp of of making noise in nationally. And and if Coach Wilson can get these guys to ball out this year, I think they're going to be, I think they're going to improve. I think they're going to improve on that seven and nine.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02And I don't think going 500 is where they want to be. I think they want to be above 500. Yeah. But but they play in the sack, dude. Not an easy. It's a grind. You know, like we talked about the NE10. Right. And being such a grind, it's like, oh, they'll play Lenore Ryan. Oh, next week, Wingate. Next week, you know, Limestone. Oh, next week, Newberry. Oh shit. Next week, Anderson. Oh my God.
SPEAKER_01It's just coming. It's funny because we we went through it. And most teams, except if you look at Lenore Ryan and what they're losing on offense, aren't losing a lot, those top teams. And so this team's going to improve, but you've got that same gauntlet you've got to go through because there is no rest.
SPEAKER_02It's a grind.
SPEAKER_01In this conference. At least they got the weather. Not as good as the sunshine state, though.
SPEAKER_02You know what, though? Sometimes it's cold in North Carolina. You know, I've been down to those Carolina games when they rained in February. Dude, it's been cold down there. I was in winter jackets in like February down there.
SPEAKER_01You know, I had my heated mittens on, my battery-operated mittens, keeping my hands warm. Let me tell you.
SPEAKER_02It gets chilly there. I was at a game at Mars Hill when my son TJ was at St. Leo. They were playing Mars Hill. We were up at Mars Hill. It was snowing.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, Mars Hill easily.
SPEAKER_02I was like, what the hell? I came down south for this. All right. But we got grabs again. I expect the rail splitters to be uh an improved team. I I like Coach Wilson. I just like his energy. The fact that he's got 50 or so players there shows that the school is committed. Yeah. You know, the the AD is committed. They're putting heads in beds and they're putting butts on the field.
SPEAKER_01And and they can't and his coaching staff and him, Coach Wilson, uh, have done the work to get and recruit to get those players in there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. He's but he's busted his tail, and I expect them to improve. So I'm really looking forward to seeing how LS LMU comes out uh front in the gate, you know, against you know, Emmanuel Land or Barton, see him against these teams and how they stack up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Last team to get to the Cobras of Coker.
SPEAKER_02Coker Cobras. Not a bad year last year. Seven and eight overall, three and six in conference. Got Austin Ambrose as the interim head coach.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Coach John Snow, like we talked about earlier, is not coaching this year. So now Coach Ambrose has been with him since the beginning when he came in. He's in his third season with Coker, he's been assistant all the time. I think he played or coached with Coach Snow at Reinhardt. So he has familiarity. I don't think there's going to be a lot of change, obviously, in what they do, how they run things. But look at the last three years, they've had two coaches, and now they've got one. Yeah. That's got to have a little bit of an impact. That's what kind of is going to be interesting to see.
SPEAKER_02That's tough. That's tough. Yeah. You need you need a second coach. I don't know how anybody could be a college coach with just one coach. It's got to be somebody to come in and help out. I mean, it's just it's just too much for one guy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. It's a lot. It's a lot. But they they continually improved with uh Snow being there. And Ambrose is a part of it, so let's see what he can do. Their 2024 out of conference is Emmanuel, Lander, Barton, North Greenfield, and Young Harris. So that's a competitive schedule for them. And I think it's a good schedule for them to test them as they go into conference play. Their 2024 roster, Danny, isn't out yet. At least I couldn't see it. So, you know, last year they were up at 40 plus players. I assume they're there this year. You know, based on what their classes were, I think their top scorers should return in Justin Behee, Calvin, Justin, and then Ryan Foran. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Jake Bundridge, LSM, Elijah Oots, OG Ford, Justin Behee, like you said, out of Culver City, California, 19 goals and two assists. So let's see what Coach Ambrose can do. You know, seven and eight is a a decent, a decent year.
SPEAKER_01And um, that 500. My question is, does their senior defenseman, Jake Brundage, return as a as a fifth year? Does their goalie Ethan Hofort return? He was at 53%. And he had some critical saves last year in games. He was really, really good. You know, it's interesting. If you look at the team stats, they're not phenomenal. They got killed in turnovers, man up only 18%. They cleared at 77%, but and only 31.9 shots per game. But I don't think those stats really show, although they need improvement, they don't show how they played. They were a gritty team. They're competitive.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they go out and they play hard.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You can't it's you look at those stats and you'd be shocked to say that they're seven and eight, right? You would think maybe they were three and nine or whatever. Right, exactly. Exactly. So they're a really good team. Can they break 500 this year? With they can. They can do it. I it'll be interesting to see with just uh Coach Ambrose running the whole thing. I wish him well. I I love seeing these teams like Coker and Lincoln Memorial improve every year like they have, and I and I'd love to see them continue with that.
SPEAKER_02So Kev, the SAC, in my opinion, is the most competitive conference in all of Division II. That's my opinion. It's one guy. I know Coach Mariano from Pace would disagree with me, and most of the NE10 coaches would probably disagree with me. But when I look at the sack from top to bottom, holy mackerel, man, there's a bunch of teams that can play here. Like, you know, I'm looking at Lenore Ryan, Limestone, Wingate, all those three right there, national elite squads.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Elite. Yeah. They they're in my top five, at least. Three of those teams are in my top five. I mean, that's how good they are. Then you got Anderson right there. They're going to be ranked. Then you got Newberry, who's a really good squad. They're going to be ranked. And like we just said, it wouldn't shock us if LMU made the top 20 at some point during the season with a couple of big wins. Um, the middle of a pack here is as good as some of the other teams that are champs in their in their you know conferences.
SPEAKER_01Teams like Mataba and Mars Hill, especially where those those teams were before, as well as Tusculum. Tusculum had a couple tough years, but I remember when my son was a freshman, they had a pretty good season.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they were a tough squad. They came in and they played hard. Like, you know, the SAC is just such a tough conference, the schedule, you know. Um the the the unfortunate thing is that most of these schools are within a couple of hours of each other. You know, they they don't have to travel far for these for these uh these SAC, you know, these conference games. Yeah. So I just think of the the world of this conference. I think LR is gonna be a juggernaut. I think Wingate's gonna be really, really tough this year. I think they got a little, you know, I think the Bulldogs have uh, I think they're a little pissed off at the way they ended it last year. And with Riley and Greco coming back, I think that's gonna be who do you guard on that team? And then you got Limestone and just, you know, with Zach Terry and McGarry and you know, just you know, just a great squad. And then you got Anderson with Logan Gaddis and Matty Rogers and Raven Badron and just, you know, all Americans, you know, and just all sack players. And then then you got LMU who's who's just like right there. Just this just Newberry. I think Newberry's a great team, you know. I just think what Coach Collar does there is just amazing. I just I love the sack.
SPEAKER_01It's tough, man.
Coach Mitchell of Anderson
SPEAKER_01Now it's time to let a coach do the talking. This time we get to speak with a coach who has his team in the top 20 hunt the past several years in a short three years in existence, like we talked about, Danny, as we did the preview. We got to sit down with Coach Albert Mitchell from Anderson a few weeks ago to see what he thinks they can do this year. So, what do you say, Danny? Why don't we just get that one started? Here we go, Coach Mitchell from Anderson. Coach Mitchell, welcome back to In the Crease with us the Knuckleheads, talking to you once again. It's been a little while since we had you on last time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, a couple of years. Thank thanks for having me back on. Um, really appreciate you guys. Thanks. Uh thanks for thinking of me, and um glad to do this with you guys.
SPEAKER_02Coach Mitchell, we really appreciate you taking the time to come back on the show with us. We really love what Anderson has done and what you've done in Anderson in a short period of time. And just uh let's talk. How's it going there this year? How's it going so far?
SPEAKER_00Uh it's it's been good. Um, you know, uh I uh think we've had our best fall uh that we've ever had. And to be honest, that's um if we didn't have our best fall that we've ever had, I'd I'd feel like I'm not doing my job because this is our first fall with you know full class of seniors, guys that have been it through it for four years. Right. Um, it's kind of surreal at the last fallball practice. I was like, seniors, this is your last fallball day. You know, when we get back here, I think it's January 8th, it's gonna be your last first day of the spring. Uh, so it's pretty surreal, but it's been good. Um, you know, working out some some key things here, uh, style of play, uh, some new guys coming in, um, both freshmen and some transfers. Uh, but it's been good. I uh really like the work that the guys have put in, they're really bought in. Um, and they they really believe in themselves right now. I uh I don't think it's that overconfidence yet. Uh I'll let them know when it gets there. But uh no, they're they're they're they're working hard. They're you know, it's been great. It's been a really enjoyable group so far.
SPEAKER_01So it's funny you say that, coach. You when you say about you'll keep them in check with their egos. I remember we had Matthew Rogers on last year, and he talked that we had the like two games in a row. He had, I don't know, like 18 goals in two games or something crazy. He goes, Coach keeps me in check. So it's a it's good that you're the balance. Let me but I I have to start off. You talk about having your best fall ball ever. Your team just improves year over year. And if you look at your record in the three three years you've been playing, you went from four and ten to nine and seven to twelve and six. How ranked and ranked and ranked. How did you build a powerhouse like this so quickly?
SPEAKER_00It's a lot of levels. I don't want to say we're a powerhouse yet. Um, you know, we got to have those are my words, some hardware. Yeah, no, let's get some hardware first before we start throwing that one around. But it's uh I think it's a lot of levels. I think first the the school's buy-in to the sport has been great. I say it's humbly and you know, not that I had anything to do with it, uh, but I think facilities for us is unmatched. Um, I think the support from the school, just like the the amount of people that come to games and the amount of people that just have bought into the sport and give our give our guys just a good environment. Um, you know, I think that's uh I think it's huge for us. Um, you know, we we've we really want for nothing. Um and if we do, you know, that we we make it up in other ways. And we certainly don't have everything. You know, uh I'd love uh a couple more scholarships or a little bit, you know, more a sportbox or whatever it is, but what coach would tell you, you know, anything different, right? Right, right. Um, I think we've done um a good job of recruiting so far. I think we've got guys that uh obviously the the surface level stuff, you know, the talent is there, but also some good character guys that you know have bought into this and you know, they have to have the talent. We're not gonna recruit them if they don't, but they they also have the work ethic and the drive that's that's really pushed them. A lot a lot of that goes on my assistant coach. Uh uh just promoted him to uh associate head coach with you know um help from my AD. Um who is unbelievable. Um Bert Epton, he does a great job and really cares about the sport. We've added three sports since I've been here, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and football. And uh we haven't had a football season yet, but women's lacrosse is off to a great start, and I think a lot of that comes from him. Um but back to my guys, you know, they so far have just worked their tails off and they've bought into the idea that we can do something pretty special here. And um, you know, at times I like I said earlier, I got to remind them uh but they need to that they need to continue that work, but it's becoming easier and easier for me to kind of pull back a little bit on that, and uh, and they're taking it over. We spent a lot of time this this past you know year and a half um transitioning leadership and and really captainship from myself and and Matt Ladon uh to our players, and they have just taken off and you know, they come to me with ideas. Um, you know, they're they they keep the ship right, a lot of the operational stuff. Um so coach and I can worry about the X's and O's and going and seeing two kids and bringing them in. So it's it's a lot of different levels, and you know, it's a great place to be. Um, you know, it's a great school, beautiful weather. You guys always like to talk about that. Oh yeah, you know, um Clemson's right down the road. So you want the big school feel on Saturdays in the fall, you you you got that. Um, but you know, we're also a faith-based institution too, where you're gonna hear a little bit about Jesus. And um, guys that want to hear that, we're we're the best place for you, um, in my opinion. You know, if you if you don't want to hear about it, we or I shouldn't say you don't want to hear about it, but it's not something that's you know at the top of your mind when you're looking at a school, we're still a great place for you, and um, you can get everything that you want out of a college experience with that. So um I I'm really thankful. I know I hit the lottery, and I know a lot of a lot of guys would be jealous of the position that I'm in, and um, I'm just trying not to mess it up too bad.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you've done quite the job in a short period of time. You have you know, you have these boys balling out, uh really playing competitive across across the board. I mean, and I just don't know how you did it so fast. How what was your secret? Yeah, I I you don't want to sell it, Jeff.
SPEAKER_00You don't want to say if if I had to if I had to tell, you know, my biggest advice to somebody that's starting a program, um, from my experience, and I, you know, I don't have all the answers, but I think the the the number one thing I've stressed, and my guys will probably tell you this is true, is that they have to buy in on their own time. Um and every school is doing the same amount of work you know in their time together. You know, we all have care a lot that we gotta fill out, and you know, we all get 15 hours a week for a little bit in the fall, we get eight hours a week for you know uh a little bit less in the fall, and then we all get 20 in the in the spring. And probably these teams aren't getting to that 20. But um, you know, what are you doing to separate yourself and really putting it on them, you know, and and uh a high school coach said this to me back when I was at St. John's. Um, you know, you you've got to put yourself on the line so much that you risk utter devastation at the end of your time here. Um and you know, put so much uh work into it that if you don't get what you want, you'll be devastated. Uh and that's really stuck with me. Wow, to you know, continue to push that on those guys, and um, you know, they will. And I I and I think if you do that, and we always talk about this too, I think if you do that and you end up not getting it, you feel no regret. So there is no devastation, right? The devastation comes when you don't put it in everything.
SPEAKER_01When you've got the question at the end of what if? Exactly. What if I put in a little more time? What if I put in a little more effort? That's that's a powerful way to look at it. I I want to switch it all up a little bit, Coach. You said something that you think you had the best fall ball you've ever had, and a lot of it has to go with you now having seniors. But you also are gonna be missing, I'm gonna just call it the elephant in the room, Cam Weeks next year. Yeah. And I'll tell you, when we watched games last year, uh, he's not coming back, and we watched games when he would not play, and you guys were stacked with great offensive and defensive players, but it looked like when he was not playing, and you still did well on face-off, not as great, but you still did well. It just the rhythm was different. It just seemed like you're the the team was a little off, almost like Cam Weeks was a catalyst to your team last year, a lot of times. And that's just from my neophyte dad eyes watching, right? I'm no no coach, but is that something that you try to work on in this fall ball? How has the team kind of looked at that and and how are you moving forward? And can't because if you look at your roster for next year, it's stacked. Logan Gaddis, Peyton Jefferson, Chase Robertson, Ryan Baudron, Matthew Rogers, and your two goalies. I mean, you are stacked, so it's not like you don't have the players.
SPEAKER_02Dude, they're studs.
SPEAKER_01Those kids are studs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and and like you know, you said, um, you know, just starting out, those, I mean, Logan Gaddis, Peyton Jefferson, all those kids you just listed, they work their tails off. Uh yeah. And that's one of the reasons why they're they're those guys you're talking about. Um, and you know, they they'll tell you they got work to do too. Um but you know, I think most people probably share your your sentiment, Kevin, you know, looking at what we're gonna be without them and uh the drop-off that kind of happened in you know last spring. But first and foremost, our program has never been and never will be defined by one player. Um, you know, that we're we're a collective group. Um, and we won and lost as a team last year. And I do think uh some injuries had a lot to do with where we went last year. And um, you know, the obvious one is the first team All-American, right? But you know, there was a a lot of different levels to it and a lot of things going on that not in a tragic way or anything like that, but a lot of things going on that um people didn't see. And um it just we didn't have it. We were we were young, um, you know, a little bit immature. I think some of those losses uh affected confidence and you know, losses as in um personnel, which then losses in games, and you know, the the confidence was dropped a little bit. But you know, to be honest, we we I we haven't talked about um making up for effort uh on the face-off one time this fall. Um, you know, it's a it's something everybody I'm sure knows, but we've never talked about it as a group. You know, it's just we're teaching.
SPEAKER_01I think that's where I was getting to, Coach, in a way, is that I and I don't know, like I said, it's maybe it was I wasn't seeing the right thing last year, but I think that's the whole point is you're not gonna lose because you don't have Cam Weeks. And you your face-off's gonna be fine. You've got the players to still win. And when you say you had some losses last year and it made it tough, you were still 12 and 6, damn it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, and it's tough to keep that perspective too. I think uh I said this earlier, um, not to you guys, but uh a couple of weeks ago. Like if you had asked me at the start of my third season if you know I would take 12 and 6 and you know, all the you know, hubbub and whatever, the rankings are you know, all that, um, if I'd take that, you know, when I first started the program in year three, yeah, I'd tell you, hell yeah, absolutely. That sounds like a dream. And then uh the way the year ended and you know what could have been. And yeah, you know, I think it left a lot of uh sour taste in guys' mouth. And I don't think we've played necessarily, you know, with anger or like let's show them this fall, but I think it's kind of showing the guys like, you know, we we we left some meat on the bone and let's get after it, let's work. Um you know, I think we uh we brought in a good group. You know, we're bringing in uh well first I'll I'll I'll say um you know one of our returning guys, Ethan Pratt. I mean, this kid he hit the weight room. Um, yeah, I think kind of knowing that he has a role to be filled. I I've never seen a kid come back more different. I I couldn't be prouder of the kid. I told him that at the end of the year, end of the fall meeting. Hopefully he doesn't get fat and happy. I'm sure he won't. Um but he's been great. Um, doing a great job, not just on the face off, you know, around the field. And then we brought in two freshmen who have you know really been um impactful. One in particular, the other one was playing football, actually. Um, so he wasn't with us this fall except for a couple of days, but never competed. Yeah. But um, you know, AJ Rush did a great job for us, and um Aiden Dixon is our football guy. We've also got Brett and Crewe ready to go. So um I'm excited to see what those guys got. They got a big opportunity here, and they they seem really excited. And you know, I think our wing play has been better through our our two scrimmages, and just we've been facing off a lot of practice um, you know, within our drills. So I'm excited to see. That was obviously a big jump statistically from you know the end of March to the start of April. Um, but we've won games without being 82%.
SPEAKER_01Um, and that's what I'm saying. You we rattled off those players, and then you look at who you have in cage. You've got two goalies that I don't know how you pick them or if it's going to be by committee or what you do, but that I mean, I don't see a lineup. I think your lineup matches with any team in the division. Not the conference, the division.
SPEAKER_00I appreciate that. I appreciate it. We'll we'll see on uh Saturdays and Wednesdays, but um, you know, I hope so. I I I I I have a lot of confidence in these guys, but um, you know, let's see when the lights turn on, man. I'm I'm ready to go. I'm fired up.
SPEAKER_02And it's the sack, man. It's the sack. And if you ask me, it's the best top-to-bottom conference in all of Division II. I mean, five-ranked teams last year, and other teams were as good or improving. I just think the sack is just every year just gets better and better and better. And you guys are right there in the mix. Right there. You you beat Wingate two years ago. You you know, you beat good teams. You beat the biggest Limestone last year.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And that's what I'm saying. This conference, I'd like to get your opinion on this conference and what you think. But you know, we've had for years the Lenore Rhines, the Wingates, the Limestones, but you look at the other teams, your team, Newberry, Coker, Lincoln Memorial, go down the list. You can't rest on any of those games in conference when you play them, or any teams that play them. What do you think about the competition in the conference?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you you you actually stole my thunder there. Um, because everybody talks about those, you know, those top guys, you know, that are competing in in the rankings and whatnot. But honestly, the team I was most impressed with last year was LMU. Uh the jump they had in the past two years, they had an unfortunate situation with the coaching change. And uh just look at what Joe's done there. I mean, my goodness, they they uh I I was sweating bullets going into their game. Playing in Harrogate is not easy. They're they're an awesome team. Um, and they jump. I mean, they're you guys talk about our jumps. They're they might be making bigger jumps than we are as far as like relatively every year. And um, you know, Coker, they they are so well coached, they execute really well. Uh, they gave us a three-goal game. You know, Coach Murphy at Catawba just getting started down there. Like, those guys are good. They I think it was a three-goal game or four-goal game, and like you just they're gonna get back to two, you know. Yeah, they they just do a lot of good stuff that it it really challenges as players um to adapt during the game and you know as coaches to give give our guys the right feedback. Um, but you know, those top guys they are they they deserve every bit of recognition that they get. You know, Newberry is they they play so hard. Um, I mean, really all of them do. Um, you know, obviously everyone knows the the um I'll say more traditional programs with Wingate, LR, and and limestone. I mean, you know, the we've got two national champions and a team that is right there. Um, we'll get one pretty soon if I was a betting man. Um it's uh yeah, and back to your point earlier, you know, I think that's one of the reasons why I've been able to compete um so quickly, too, is uh sitting in a room with recruits, like you got to bring it every week. If you wanna if you want to be the best, come play here because we're playing best. And uh we're gonna give you the resources, hopefully give you the coaching. Um and you know kids want to play against the best teams. They really do. Absolutely do. The ones that are you know, the ones that are all Americans, the ones that are gonna make it at that top level, they're they want to play. They don't want to play a cupcake schedule. And you know, shoot, even I mean, even Mars Hill and Tuscell and the teams that finished uh you know last and second to last in the conference, they gave us a battle. Yeah. Um so it it it's fun. It's fun to play in. And um, I got nothing but respect for every coach in our conference. They're they do a great job.
SPEAKER_02You know, the when you said that, I was just thinking about the level of coaching in the sack from top to bottom. Like there's some really, really, really good coaches that are doing phenomenal things with these teams. Like you said, Newberry LMU. These teams are just improving. The whole conference is improving from top to bottom. You could take an LMU or Morris Hill, like you were saying, maybe the bottom lower half of the sack, put them in another conference, and they'd be right up near the top, man. You know, because that's how good they are. That's how good the sack is, you know. So I I I agree with you about the coaching, and and don't sell yourself short, coach. You're right there with them, okay? I appreciate it.
SPEAKER_01I think he's turned a little red there, uh Danny. Um luckily we're not on the city. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_00I'm I'm just Sumber from sitting in Florida this uh weekend at the convention.
SPEAKER_01Oh, rub it in, rub it in, Orlando. I saw pictures, I was jealous.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, talk talk talk about a uh a well-run organization, IMLCA, they did a great job with all that from the convention and then the recruiting piece. Um man, they they they're crushing it.
SPEAKER_01We have the uh we had the uh uh D2 assistant coach of the year text me and he's like, You guys gotta come down next year, start a D2 Media Day. I'm like, is there one? He goes, no, but you're gonna start it.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, that's a great mobile.
SPEAKER_00We'll be the pioneers because I don't think there's a D1 or D D3. So you guys can uh you guys could start a trend here. Do a live podcast. Yeah, I mean, what a shame. You'd have to, you know, to get on a plane and go to Florida. Yeah, the Omni Resort, man. It's rough it, but shoot. Yeah, I bet. I bet. No, that's great.
SPEAKER_01Well, we once again, Danny, we digressed from what we were supposed to be talking about here. And I just want to say, Coach, so great to have you on again. You are so much fun to talk to. You're very humble, and uh it comes across, but the way you what you've done with your team and what you've built there in the sack and really in the division is a testament to you, your staff, the athletic department, and certainly your players. And we just really thank you for coming on and we wish you all the best this next season.
SPEAKER_00I appreciate it, guys. Thanks for having me, and um, thanks for all the attention you give us and um all D2 and um you know, I tune in every week, and uh whether it's to get a little bit of snippet of information or just to, you know, the pure entertainment of it and to kind of hear about uh, especially some of the games up north where you know um I'm not paying as much attention to because I'm not playing those teams, uh you know, it it's great. And um, I think a lot of people are picking up on what you guys are doing. You're you're throwing out numbers out there, and I'm just blown away. Um, and you know, we're the second biggest division now, so it's you know, I think we deserve a little bit more credit than we get sometimes. And um you yeah, it it it's every game's tough. It's it's an awesome, awesome league, and appreciate everything you guys do. You guys are fun to listen to. Thanks, Coach.
SPEAKER_02Albert Mitchell, Anderson Trojans. We really appreciate it. Good luck this season, and uh maybe I'll see you at one of these games this year.
SPEAKER_00Sounds good. Looking forward to it. Let me know if you're coming.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I will. Thanks again. Albert Mitchell, head coach, Anderson Trojans. Thank you.
Final Thoughts
SPEAKER_01Hey, it was good talking to Coach Mitchell. I've got one thing to say, he's way too humble.
SPEAKER_02He's a nice guy, and like I said, what he's done in a short period of time there in Anderson is just amazing. It's got good players, it's a beautiful campus. I heard it's gorgeous, and it's right down the road from Clemson. So, you know, it's got that big college kind of atmosphere there, not too far if the kids want to go have some fun. So, Anderson is one of those schools that's up and coming and has a lacrosse program, worthy, you know, top 10, top 15 team. Um, they're playing the sack, they play in nice weather. It's just a good school all the way around. Just it's just the all the way a good thing for Anderson.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they're gonna be tough this year again. So, but let's move on. We we've hit the sack pretty heavily. We've got some good news, Danny. As we mentioned a couple episodes ago, that Davis and Elkins head coach was let go. Well, they have a new head coach, and that is uh Tyler Frey. Now, from everything I've seen, it's only been announced on social media. I try to go on the website and find out more about him, see if they had you know information on the announcement. So only I can find is that Tyler is a Mercyhurst graduate from 2011. So he played his ball at Mercyhurst, he knows D2. He's a fairly young guy. Let's see what he can do. I'm glad to see that they actually got a coach in time for the season. Good luck. Good luck, coach. Yeah, but they've at least they've they've got a coach and they've got some they've got someone who can hopefully, besides just the players doing it, they can have someone steer them in the right direction.
SPEAKER_02The season starts in like three weeks.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, so let's move on to our final scorebreak feature spotlight of the week during the conference preview. And this spotlight is unlimited storage. Let me say that again unlimited storage. You should put your echo on. Unlimited storage. That's why I've got you, Danny. That's why I've got you. You know, other platforms like Huddle limit the number of hours teams can store in their accounts. Not scorebreak. Not scorebreak. They provide unlimited storage to everyone.
SPEAKER_02Unlimited storage.
SPEAKER_01I don't know about you, Danny, but I'm the kind of guy who likes to keep all for all my historical files because I always feel like there's some time I'm gonna need it. And a lot of times I go back, whether it's a briefing or it's a clip or it's something, I always go back to try to see if I can repurpose for one reason or another. And I think that's a great feature for coaches on teams. They always have the availability to go back to previous film to reuse or to relook, especially if they think like, oh yeah, what was that play last year? And when we played limestone and we wanted to see this, and now they they know they're not gonna lose it. It's a great, great uh benefit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, just www.scorebreak.io. Coaches, do it mention in the crease, get 15% off your first year.
SPEAKER_01And don't forget, Huddle has uh limited storage and score break has unlimited storage. So, like Danny says, do it there you go, Kevin. All right, all right, so just as a reminder, now we finished up all our conference previews. What do we have last laugh, Danny, but our top 20? Except there are two teams that don't have a conference, they're independent, and that's Dominican of California and Virginia State. And so as an extra bonus, before we give our top 20 next week, we will give a little preview of both those teams.
SPEAKER_02What do you say? Yeah, I'm excited. I'm excited. I think the top 20, our top 20 is like one of my favorite podcasts to do. It's really interesting to see like what USA La Crosse will put out and then what you say and then what I say. But you know what? I'm gonna be honest with you. We've done our homework, Kev. I think we have our you know, our ear to the rail pretty good here. And I think whatever we come up with is gonna be darn close.
SPEAKER_01I think so. I think it'll be pretty good. But with that, Danny, for this week, that's a wrap. That's a wrap, Kev.
