Intro
SPEAKER_01Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Creest with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's Afrost. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stenstrom, and with me as always is the man ready to bring the heat, and he needs it, Danny Moran.
SPEAKER_03Oh, Kevin, what's going on, my man in Northern Virginia tonight, man? Thank God the heat's working. I know. I know you're looking comfortable. A lot of snow this weekend, just last night into today. So yeah, it feels good to be inside the heat and inside. How's it going in Northern Virginia tonight, my friend?
SPEAKER_01It's uh it's cold, but not as cold as up there. And uh, you know, I'm ready for uh another week of lacrosse, see where it goes. Always a lot of fun. It's funny because when this season started, we had all those cancellations and we're like, you can't start games January 31st or February 1st. And the one thing we said was like, yeah, but does it get much better near the end of the month of February? And no, with this snow, Wingate against a Delphi and the Norrine against a Delphi that was supposed to happen Wednesday and then Saturday are canceled now. Why? Because of snow.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Delphi can't get out, and nobody can get out of New York. I think it's like 4,000 uh plane cancellations.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't I don't know what the answer is. It's not gonna happen. Gotta start the maybe our guest analyst, our first of the season, has a good solution for when you start the start the season. I just thought of that.
SPEAKER_03But before we bring them on, Kev, I gotta admit, I have to eat some crow. We got some crow to eat this week, you know.
SPEAKER_04Yes, I eat crow.
SPEAKER_01Speak for yourself for breakfast.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you got some crow to eat too, my dear. I thought this song was apropos for tonight.
SPEAKER_04It's a blue ribbon winner. Sing this song.
SPEAKER_03Cause I knew it was wrong when I thought I was right.
SPEAKER_01Maybe this should be our new theme song. Country Southern. Yeah, it's tough to swallow. I wish I had an ice cream to follow. My big old heap in helping a crow.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, a little heap in helping a crow there for us tonight.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we'll probably get through that when we talk some of these games. We do have to eat some crow on some of these games, but let's bring him in. First guest host of the season, our first guest analyst, long time coach at Limestone. Maybe you can get us caught up where his boys are now. Uh, but he we had him on the first episode of the season when we talked about limestone and then kind of a tribute and all they brought to the to the D2 world and to the lacrosse community and the lacrosse world. And he had us rolling like from minute one when he was on the podcast, and we're like, first guest analyst this year. We got to bring it back. And here he is, willing to come on with us, the two knuckleheads, Bill Malone. Hey Bill, how are you?
SPEAKER_00Gentlemen, how are we? Does that make me the third knucklehead or honorary knucklehead?
SPEAKER_03Yes, you can be an honorary knucklehead for sure. Absolutely. We'd be honored to have you as a honorary knucklehead of the uh knucklehead podcast. It kind of like elevates us in a way, I think.
unknown100%.
SPEAKER_00How's it going, Bill? Good, good. Just uh, you know, living a life down here in Georgia, you know, watching some T2 lacrosse and you know, watching some uh Division I uh lacrosse and you know being a dad to my girls and doing homework.
SPEAKER_03And how are your girls doing?
SPEAKER_00They're they're they're good. We just started busy weekend. I I'd emailed Kevin between uh, you know, we had the the crazy cart uh Girl Scout kind of like the uh Pinewood Derby for the uh the Boy Scouts. Okay. So had that and birthday parties and basketball and you know, banquet and you have softball? Not yet. Uh yeah, no, here here in Georgia, here in Georgia, softball's a fall sport. Wow, but oh yeah, and I and and softball opening weekend was canceled because of the rain down here. So yeah, for my my little one, my uh my six-year-old, she's playing U8 softball. So uh we gotta we got a long way to go with uh U8 softball.
SPEAKER_01So that's awesome. I remember those days with a couple kids uh having to split duties of where one goes on a Saturday for a sport or birthday party and bringing the other one to somewhere else. We I we had three doing that at the time, but they're all grown now. So we move on from that and into other things. But what's so give us a little g give us some inside scoop of what you think about some of the limestone players and where they landed and what you're thinking there.
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, you know, obviously Carter Krasinski at Lewis, he did a he did he did a really great job. And, you know, the uh you know the Newberry Saints, um, you know, that with a lot of the guys playing defense and offense, you know, for uh for them, you know, they've been uh they've been playing pretty well. You know, I I I watched a little bit of the indie game, you know, there, and uh, and you know, there it's the guy the guys that uh kind of moved on to other places have uh have have produced. I mean, between Caden Onagi and Alex Eppel and uh Everett Campbell, you know, those guys at uh Lee's McCrae. So, you know, I'm just glad those guys are contributing and you know and helping out, you know, other programs that uh you know in in Division II and we're able to find a good home and where they're probably happy.
SPEAKER_04Caden Terry and Nick Del Grosso's getting some burn over there now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so is um Ryan Morrison. Ryan Morrison's getting uh getting a lot of time. So you know, definitely happy for uh for those guys. I'm gonna try and catch them at uh at Anderson. Um I mean, short drive, you know, just right over the border into South Carolina. So I'm gonna try and catch uh catch you know some uh some Newberry games as well. So uh try and try and support our uh our guys. I text every now and then to uh you know some of the kids, even even over in the in D3. So a couple kids at Pfeiffer, you know, um some of my guys who were there, or you know, guys who are at uh at limestone. So you know, I try and keep I try and keep uh keep an eye on everybody. I mean, there was a lot of guys. So it's tough to keep tabs on there.
SPEAKER_01You wouldn't be able to take care of your girls if you were texting and taking care of all your players.
SPEAKER_00Well, still being unemployed, you know, it's uh you know, I try and try and uh keep an eye on uh on things. So I got a lot of free time on my hands still.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, we're glad we have you employed this evening with us on the In the Crease. And before we get in and really start eating Crow, Danny, why don't we start with your top
Top 10 Countdown
SPEAKER_0110?
SPEAKER_02It's in the Greece. Top 10 countdown.
SPEAKER_03All right, Kev, our top 10 countdown week three. Number one, a Delphi beat St. Thomas 20-8. Are you kidding me? Uh Panthers go to three and oh. Now, like you said, they were supposed to travel to Wingate this week, and those games have been canceled due to snow. So I have no idea who Adelphi plays next, to be honest with you. They get like a long rest time. Number two, Tampa beat Rockhurst 13-6. The Spartans go to 5-0, and they host CUI next, Kev. CUI travels from uh the West Coast over to the East Coast, playing a couple teams in Florida this week. So uh that's going on. Number three, St. A's. They open up their season this weekend versus Frostburg State on Sunday, March 1st. Looking forward to seeing St. A's get going. Number four, Meryville. You ever see their defense? Their defense looks good, Kev. They beat UAH 17-7. Uh the Saints go to 3-0, and they play Tampa on Saturday. That should be a good game. Yeah. We'll be talking about that game. Yeah. Uh number five, Seton Hill. They beat Chestnut Hill rather handily, 14-6. They go to 2-0, and they play U Indy on Saturday. That should be an exciting game to watch. Yeah. Number six, Anderson, still looking good. Kev beat number 14, Emory Riddle rather handily, 18-9. They host Lander next. Number seven, LR, destroyed Lees McCray. Destroyed him, beat him up bad, 19-3. Uh, and the Bears go to two and one, and they were supposed to host Adelphi on Saturday, and I have no idea who they're playing either this weekend. So we'll catch it next week. Just keep going. Yeah. Number eight, Pace lost to number 20, Malloy, uh in overtime in a great game. We'll talk about that one tonight. And uh Pace will host Chestnut Hill this weekend, Kev. Number nine, Florida Tech lost to North Greenville 12 to 6. Tech falls to 2-2, and they host CUI on Friday. So CUI's got to make packed little week. Uh Emily Riddle today, and uh Tampa, and then uh Florida Tech. And number 10, Wingate was supposed to host a Delphi on uh Wednesday, and uh, I think they played Belmont Abbey on Saturday at Belmont Abbey. Uh that's your top 10 countdown for week three, and just a couple of scores to know, fellas. Walsh won its first game of the season 12-10 over Roberts Wesleyan. AJ Harrison and Toby Olenek had four goals each in that game. Lander goes to four and oh with a 25-4 pounding over Emmanuel. Get this, boys. Lander had 16 different scorers in the game. Wow. Yeah. Coker. How about Coker? Quietly sits at 4-1, boys. They crushed Emery and Henry 18-8. Point Park Pioneers of Pittsburgh PA got their first win, Kevin program history. 11-9 over Malone. Grant Huber and Parker Bowersocks with three goals apiece in their game. And Kataba beat Parton 12-9. Katawba's 3-0. Peyton Turner had four goals in that game. Flagler over Florida Southern 11-8. Florida Southern kept it close, but Trace McDonald's was too much. Three goals and three assists. So Flagler goes to 3-2. Florida Southern Kev winless 0-4. And that's just a couple of scores to note.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a couple others I saw. Belmont Abbey over Mount Montevallo, 8-7, close game. Mercy squeaks one out against Wilmington, 9-8. We thought Wilmington was going to be good. We didn't know where Mercy was, but Mercy's undefeated still, but Wilmington's a damn good team. And then you talked about Walsh. Well, Frostburg also beat Walsh recently, 9-6. So Frostburg has one win under their belt now. So those are a couple other games that
Week in Review
SPEAKER_01I saw. So let's move on and talk about the first game. Actually, it was kind of like a double header for them as they're on the on the road, and that's Newberry, who traveled to U Indy on Friday and then played Lewis on Sunday. So they had that kind of the back-to-back quick turnaround, long travel for them. They lost, no, they beat Undy 8-6.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I didn't get to watch that game. Bill, did you watch any of that game? Did you get to see it?
SPEAKER_00A little bit of it. Um, I mean, it was it was it was a great first half, and then the second half was uh, you know, this this you know defense, I think it was uh one goal in the um in the third quarter by Indy, and then Newberry put up two. Um but that first half, I mean, it was uh it was a six uh six five Newberry at the at the half. And then, you know, defensively, you know, they they uh you know it looks like they they kind of settled in there, at least Newberry, Newberry's defense and you know, new Indy's, you know, defense. But turnovers. I mean, you know, Newberry had 37 turnovers in that uh in that game, you know, which uh, you know, and then and Indy wasn't too far behind with 26. But wow. Uh yeah, so it's a lot of uh a lot of turnovers in that uh in that one. But you know, it looks like defensively they kind of they kind of settled in both uh both teams.
SPEAKER_01So it was you know it was low scoring game for for both teams, and I used to seeing that uh end score, so it must have been uh kind of a defensive battle. And it looked like I said, I just looked on the box score, saw how close it was. Really kind of crazy. Um we thought, Danny, when we talked about this, no, I don't think there's no any crow to eat yet on this one. I think you and I both picked Newberry in this one. It's the next game against Lewis that I thought would be a very close game. I think I said Lewis. I I was gonna bet that Lewis was gonna pull it out. I think you had Newberry.
SPEAKER_03No, no, I took Lewis.
SPEAKER_01Did you take Lewis? Yeah. Did we both take Lewis?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I took Lewis.
SPEAKER_01All right, so you eat no crow either then. All right.
SPEAKER_03Not in this game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There's others I will be talking about. You guys gotta put your picks up during the week, you know, on uh on like Twitter or something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that means I have to get uh even smarter on my on my social media.
SPEAKER_03He gets kind of forgetful sometimes. He forgets a busy man.
SPEAKER_01You can post him, Danny.
SPEAKER_03No, I'm not talking about posting forgetful. I'm talking about forgetful which picks you pick. But anyway, let's move on.
SPEAKER_01All to make my record look better, Danny.
SPEAKER_03That's uh coach, what do you think of Lewis when you see Lewis?
SPEAKER_00Like I'm gonna say, I think Lewis offensively is pretty talented. I mean, they have a couple limestone kids on there, uh Carter Pazinski and uh Josh uh Skelfy. I mean, Carter was Carter was two and two and one against Newberry. And uh I think Skelfie had uh had two assists. Two assists, yeah. Yeah. So I mean, you know, they're they're very, very talented uh uh offensively. Um I mean I think the game was was somewhat even in shots. Um but you know uh it's you know to go down go down 10-1 in the first half, that's something that's really, really tough to come back from against Newberry. Yeah, when you talk about the Newbury game when they're gonna be able to get it. Newberry Lewis going down, you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Now you're turning around. Now here comes Lewis at Newberry and completely different team. Yeah. And Newberry's a good squad, you know, like they're good defensively. I think they're you know, I think they're active defensively, I think they get after it, they press out, they force things, they force you on offense to do things maybe that you don't want to do. And uh Lewis was, man, that second quarter that Lewis had, you know, they went on a 7-1 run. Yeah, it was yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it was total domination by Lewis in the first half, and it there was two things that kind of uh pointed out to me. One, I I think Lewis was like you you said it, Bill, like their their offense is really good. They moved the ball really well, they got to some really kind of like just you know shots right on the goal because of good passing. And I don't think I almost was waiting for Newberry to wake up. It just seemed like they were lackadaisical now and then. They just were didn't have the fire under them that that I I thought. They started off that way at the beginning of the game, but once they once Lewis got up by a few goals, it almost like just snowballed on them.
SPEAKER_00Once they got rolling, they got rolling.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they couldn't regroup until the half. And then they did. They came out a totally different demon in the beginning of the second half.
SPEAKER_03What does our man Devin Spilker always talk about? Talks about taking care of the rock. Yeah, that's his thing. Yeah, taking care of the rock. 29 turnovers for Newberry. They did not do a good job of taking care of the rock, and a team like Lewis took advantage of it. I think Paul Rakowski got he got on the board first with a nice feed from Lance McCann. The Wolves, they were able to get shots off, but they were either blocked or saved, you know. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He had 20 saves in the Lewis Cole.
SPEAKER_03Outstanding, I thought. Yeah, he had a good game. Rokowski added another, and then Cole Lesnar added one. It was 3-0 Lewis after one. Uh Carter Kaczynski buried one off the second quarter face-off that started off with them man up. They started that quarter with a man up. Cole Lesnar added another on a nice lefty rip from up top, man. It was a nice Liam Forsyth third a biscuit. Then Ethan Fisher added one, his first collegiate goal, and it was 7-1 Lewis. Malachi Good made an 8-1 on yet another man up. Kaczynski found uh Wisner on a beautiful pass and a shoot on the run. Just a great play, you know. Just caught him on a beautiful look as he was running down the alley. Nice run shot on the run. 9-1, and the route was on, man. The route was on. Yeah, and I just Newberry just couldn't get the ball rolling against Lewis. And Lewis, I'm telling you, I think Donneyu had a great game in goal. And uh, I mean, I just think Lewis just dominated that game.
SPEAKER_01Well, the the other thing that I would say is I wrote this down in the first half. Two things I the the word undiscipline for me kind of came out for a newberry. On defense, I thought they just they either weren't communicating well because you called it, you said it right, Danny, when you were going through those those goals, right? I mean, it's tough when you're playing that well and passing the ball that well. It's I'm not it's not an easy thing, but they seemed undisciplined in on their you know, their slides and who they were doing, and then also penalties.
SPEAKER_04Well, Lewis was a very good thing.
SPEAKER_01I mean, they had some unsportsmen like that, you know, they were gonna have the ball themselves, right? And they get an unsportsman-like, and now Lewis has the ball and they're playing five on five. And they scored four on five extra man in the draft, Kev. Right. And oh oh, by the way, yeah, and then you look at uh Newberry, who went 04-4 in man up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So and you're right, and uh talk about it. The EMO, Lewis was 100% five for five in that yeah, I think in that one quarter, in the second quarter, that just you're playing defense even more when you've got to be man down.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think I think guys, Bill. I was gonna say, I think uh for the weekend, I think Newberry was 0 for 7 extra man for the for the weekend.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's not good, man. No, you you need to bury them, you know what I'm saying? So for Lewis, uh Cole Wesner was the man, five goals. The junior from you know where he's from, Kev? Where is he from? He's from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, just in case you wanted to know. Paul Rakowski, three goals and two assists. Malachi Good, Cardi Kazinski, and Liam Forsyth each added two goals. LSM Logan Succi, five ground balls, two cause turnovers. Uh Dylan Kendrick was 11 for 19 at the dot. And like I said, Caden Donahue, 20 saves. You know where he's from?
SPEAKER_01Where's he from? You're gonna get it right. Is it a Minnesota town?
SPEAKER_03It is, you guessed. But I still can't pronounce it. He's he's from Hugo, but he went to Matamida. Matamidi. I wrote that down to see if you remember. It was on your test. Matamida High School. So uh there we go. Another Minnesota kid on the podcast. And for Newberry, uh, Scott Williams, three goals. Gage Vigor had three goals, Liam Vollins. He's a really good player, man. I like the way he plays. Uh, one goal, one assist. Matt Burt had a goal. No Everson had two ground balls. Ben McMullen had 11 saves, 37 shots saw him, only 29%. Not that great of a day in Cage for my man, Mr. McMullen. And Houston Horton, 11-20 at the dot. So Lewis goes to four-and-one, and Newberry drops to four and two, boys.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the one other thing I'd point out, and this was kind of how the halves kind of supported one team or the other, it was the face-offs per half. Lewis had won nine face-offs in the first half to Newberry's three, and basically switched in the second half. Newberry won ten to Lewis's three. Wow. So that's when you start to see Newberry gain a little momentum. They just had way too high to climb in that second half.
SPEAKER_03So Lewis has only lost his to Seton Hill right now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So Yeah, and I I don't know, maybe maybe Seton Hill game helped them, and now they've got they're clicking. You know what I'm saying? Like get a couple games under your belt, play a good team like Seton Hill. U Indy is no no slouch whatsoever. Newberry comes to their field and they show 'em who's boss on their field.
SPEAKER_03That's right.
SPEAKER_01All right, let's move on. I just have to mention this game because it was the two new coaches, uh, Coach McAlevey of Bridgeport and Coach Ryan Lynch of Franklin Pierce playing against each other for their first games. Bridgeport pulls it out ten five. This was a game that both coaches I think are gonna have a lot of lessons learned on. It really it was fair uh to be honest, you look at the score, it was it was closer than it looked in a lot of ways. I mean, Bridgeport went kind of on a on a on a run that got them up six three at half, which is about all they needed. But if you look at it, the two stats that really stand out that made the game, it was a very um there was no flow to the game. No flow whatsoever. One of it was penalties, there's a total of 13 penalties. Franklin Pierce was seven, Bridgeport was six, and then it was you talked about turnovers, uh, Bill, and then the other game. Franklin Pierce had 27 in this game, and Bridgeport had 29 for a total of 56 turnovers, which that just there was no flow. Both teams really scrambling to get the ball, and they just could not get any kind of offensive sets. So Bridgeport pulls it out 10-5.
SPEAKER_00They clear Bridgeport cleared the ball well. I mean, they were 23 to 25. Yeah. So, you know, yeah. Once they got the opportunity to clear the ball, they did a really, really good job.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so for Bridgebrook, Steven Trama had two goals, three assists. James Napoli had two goals, one assist. Your boy there, Danny. Canino Luciano had two goals, and then for Franklin Pierce, Michael Lawler had one goal, two assists, and Jackson Fillion had one goal and one assist. A lot of work still as these two coaches kind of reset their teams. And remember, both of them have very small rosters somewhere in the high 20s. Yeah, it was just gonna be. I mean, cold day, if you looked at that game at all in Ringe, New Hampshire.
SPEAKER_03Did not look fun. I'll tell you right now. Well, I watched the Harvard Syracuse game, which is in, you know, and it was snowing all day in that game, so I can just imagine.
SPEAKER_01All right, let's go over another stunning game. Florida Tech goes to North Greenville, number nine, after beating Wingate, and North Greenville pulls it out. Coach, did you watch the game?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I watched it. Um, you know, it the the the North Greenville goalie. I mean, he he played played really, really well. Um, I mean the the the the offense, I think, for or the defense for for Florida Tech, um, you know, I think they gave them some opportunities, you know, uh there in that uh in that first half where, you know, not really sure about the organization um defensively, but there are a couple times where they came near man off of uh off the dodges where he was looking to dummy dodge and they were sliding off that wing with that wing attackman, and he was just he was just killing it. Um but you know the there's there's there's some some some times where they they got it in transition uh a couple times where where North Greenville scored, like he said, uh, you know, Caden Castle. I mean the kid came to play and uh North Greenville's goalie came to play. Uh I thought he had a really, really, really good game. And um, you know, I thought that uh they controlled they controlled that, but I think Florida Tech, you know, I thought shot themselves in the foot a couple times where they had possessions and they were trying to throw over the formation and throwing the ball out of bounds and just uncar, you know, just unforced errors that that probably didn't need to happen, and they probably would have got shots if they would have just made the made that easy pass and and and gotten a shot off.
SPEAKER_01So I noticed that too, and it wasn't just necessarily in the second half when they were down. There was a couple where they were still trying to make that skip pass where a guy he was open, but there's a lot of players you have to go through and they just weren't making that pass. And that's the other thing on the defensive side for Florida Tech, they did not look like the same defense that I played against Wingate. They were so dialed in against Wingate, like they knew they had to be, and they played it flawlessly almost. I mean, yes, Wingate came back, so you got to give Wingate credit, right? They broke them down finally, but they went up 7-1 mainly because of their defense, I think, against Wingate. And this time I didn't see they would slip sometimes. They wouldn't slide, which I would thought they would, uh, to to help a short stick D Mitty. And other times they slide, and the second slide wouldn't recover, and the guy was open. And North Greenville read it, like you said, coach, they would read it and they would just bury the ball.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. You know, I I was uh when I was when I was watching it, um I'm just watching watching the Florida Tech offense. They've they've got some kids who can who can play. Um I watched a little bit of the the Wingot game too, you know, and the there they're some kids who can who can who can bring it. Oh yeah. And uh, you know, it's just for just very uncharacteristic. I mean, it was it was kind of like night and day offensively, you know, that that game, that winged uh FIT game, and now against you know the the North Greenville um FIT game. It was kind of kind of night and day. Um, you know, I know Coach MacArthur. I actually I think Coach McCarthur was a freshman when I was a senior in college. I played against him, and then I had to coach against him and the competitor that he is. He I hated I hated scouting reports and going to scout him play because he just he dominated. He was a tough SOB man. Um but uh you know I know what type of coach he is, he's a pretty fiery guy, very, very intelligent, you know, on the offensive side of things as well. Um, sure he probably wasn't happy with you know the offensive performance uh against uh North Brainville.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you you talked about it. Guys like Joe Kovalesky, Thomas Strong, who's just a beast, you know, Landon Adleman. Got a lot of good players. They Dawson Long, all of those guys just had one goal apiece, which you saw them usually play better than that. Ryan Chancer had two assists. We got to shout out Coach MacArthur. He he's a very he's a fan of the show, he helps us out a lot. And he he's the one coach that will usually apologize when he's late answering emails, which I find hilarious. Like, coach, you got other things to do besides, but yeah, and then you look at North Greenville, like Caden Castle said, four goals, three assists. Nick Meyer, two goals, two assists, Aiden Sizemore, uh Ryder, Hamilton, each with a goal and an assist. And then you talked about the goalie, Matt Desmond, 15 saves for a 71% save percentage.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he took one off the side of the head, I think, on one of those shots. It was an absolute rocket. And I was like, Oh, I hope he come, hope he can come back from that. I mean, trust me, as a goalie, and uh oof, uh I that it's not fun taking one on the taking one on the temple, um, which you know he came back from and you know a backup came in there, and you know, I think he may have had a save in uh in in this in that possession, and then you know, he came back and and you know stuck it out. So, but like you said, Thomas Strong, that kid, that kid's he's he's impressive to watch. Yeah, he's tall.
SPEAKER_03Tall fast and strong, super athletic. And he ain't a I don't think there's a shot that he don't.
SPEAKER_00No, no. And that and that's the other thing. I think when they when when um when FIT had their opportunities, you know, uh the it just the shot the the shot selection is one thing that that I you know a lot of sidearm, you know, a couple times where you know they where they shot it high to high and shot it right into right into his stick and and instead of you know maybe bouncing the ball. I'm a big fan of the bounce. Um and and I hate it as a goalie. Yeah. Um you know, but uh, you know, he he he he's impressive. He had he had a couple opportunities where he he he dodged, he broke down his guy and you know, and and bought it sidearm low to high. And you know, uh I mean a lot of the a lot of the times, you know, those those shots just don't go.
SPEAKER_03So but here again, here's what I'm thinking. I'm like, I don't know what to think about these teams. I don't know what's going on in division two. There's no real dominant squad. I mean, North Greenville going into this season on paper looked really, really strong. And they're at two and two right now. Right, you know. I did not expect them to beat Florida Tech. Florida Tech looked so good against Wingate. Yeah, Wingate's a good team.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and and and yeah, we both had Florida Tech, I think, Danny. That's a little cool. We have to eat the crow.
SPEAKER_03We're eating the crow here, you know, for sure. But uh I'm gonna be honest with you. I think that North Greenville dominated this game, they controlled the game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I I felt that they played faster. I felt that they wanted it more. They they looked like they just wanted it more. They were getting to their spots, they were beating their one-on-one matchups, they were able to do things that quite frankly, did Florida Tech blow its load last week and and shoot it all against Wingate, you know, and to expect to walk in and and you know, North Greenville are two and you know, they lost their last game, and we're just gonna walk over them. Did they have that kind of attitude? Because North Greenville does not suck. They do not suck. There's just they're trying to get it together as as well. It's the beginning of the season. Right. You know what I'm saying? But each team, they both turned the ball over on their first two possessions, guys. Yeah. Tech got them on the board first when Kowaleski scored. The Trailblazers. There you go, Danny. Yeah, right. Uh Nick Meyer answered a minute later. Uh Boryak gave them Tech the lead again. A couple of good saves by both goalies in the quarter, kept it close until Caden Castle got going, got his first day, got his first of the day to tie it at two. North Greenville then went on a quick, super quick three-goal run to end the quarter by winning their one-on-one matchups and just playing faster than Tech. And it was 6-3 trailblazers after one. And we were off. Yeah. We were off to the races. The second quarter was kind of more of a defensive quarter, like Coach said. They kind of settled in. Some turners and some shots by both squads going wide. Uh Desmond made some nice saves again in the frame, taking away a few scoring opportunities. Yeah. Uh Greenville scored twice in the frame, and their defense stepped up and held tech to only one goal uh by Dawson Long, and it was 8-4 at the half.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's you you just said it, Danny. That was the that was the MO for the rest of the game. They kept them to one goal per quarter the rest of the way.
SPEAKER_03Again, I just felt that they were faster to the ball. They were faster to the game. They were just getting to their spots. They were just they played with more energy, they played with more enthusiasm, they played with more urgency, and they beat them up, man. They beat them up. It was 12-6. They doubled them up.
SPEAKER_00So what crown balled them. Outground balled them, you know, by by eight. So, I mean, that's that's I mean, but everything else was, you know, pretty, pretty, pretty even.
SPEAKER_03Uh now going forward, what kind of teams are these guys? Like, what do you say about these guys? It's a like, I don't know. It could be playing great one day and not playing great the next day. And and you know what? I think that's the kind of way D2 is going right now. I mean, I don't see any really super dominant team, uh, especially in the South. I mean, the North just kind of get going. Getting started, we can't really tell yet. Yeah. Getting going. I mean, Adelphi obviously is a very good team. St. A's is a very good team, but you know, again, where where are we going in division two? This this season has started off not like the way I thought it would go.
SPEAKER_00Well, like Jerry Reid said, you know, we got a long way to go in a short time to get there. So uh it's uh things are ramping up. And you know, the good part about it is, I mean, a lot of these, a lot of these games, you know, are yeah, they're regional games, but they're not conference games, you know. So, I mean, at least still have you know conference schedules. You know, some of these teams are building, building, you know, you know, region wins. Um, but you know, it's all gonna come down to you know the conference and and those things. I mean, the conference games are you know are the most important.
SPEAKER_01So I I think what's interesting, Danny, is uh as I can call you the CEO of chaos or the prime minister of parody, one of those two, still fits this week. I think what's interesting is when we went through the conference previews, there was a lot of there were several teams that we said we have to see them play first. We couldn't tell on paper are they gonna improve, are they gonna stay the same. North Greenville and Florida Tech weren't two of those teams. Right? I mean, we looked at Florida Tech, we're like, okay, they're gonna be about what they were last year, and North Greenville we thought would be really good. I think, and and we can go down the list of other teams, especially in the South, that we we did or did not say something, but I think that kind of shows kind of what you said, coach, you know, we've got a long way to go and a short time to get there. These teams are still trying to figure it out, which we I didn't think was gonna happen. I thought someone would come out fat, you know, would be not two and two, they'd be three and one or four and oh. And I think it's it is there's a lot more parody and it's just gonna it's gonna flesh out over the weeks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know, especially like like like Danny said in the north. I mean, with that weather and everything else, you know, unless you got a bubble or you know, someone's plowing the parking lot or plowing the turf, you know, it's gonna be uh it's gonna be tough, especially these next couple days, you know, digging out. Yeah, even to get practice in. Yeah. Um, you know, in the south, I mean, we were very, very blessed, you know. I mean, very Jekyll and hide some years, you know. We we embraced the rain in January and you know, February and the cold, the cold weather, uh, but we always had a you know a clear field, you know, and and uh turf, you know, we we always we always had well at limestone up until I think 2014, you know, we had a we had a we had a grass field. So, you know, there's sometimes we're playing in the mud, you know, for uh the first couple weeks of the uh of the season. And uh, you know, we didn't touch the game field, thank God. But uh, you know, then we got turf and just made, you know, made you know all the difference in in in prep and you know kind of kind of got ourselves ahead, you know, so some of these uh you know some of the teams, you know, in the uh, you know, in the region. So I mean it's you know, I think practice, practice isn't everything. Is everything, sorry. Um, but you know, gotta get that time in. And I think, you know, with with a Delphi not coming down here, I think that's gonna, you know, help them out a little bit. Um you know, it's gonna be tough for you know L R and Wingett, you know, you know, kind of find out who they are. Um against you know, one of the best teams in in the country and defending national champions. Um but you know, that'll give them some more time to you know work on them and you know, a Delphi to work on, work on them, and Wingett and LR to, you know, work on, you know, the things that they need to uh to work on.
SPEAKER_01Okay, the game of the week for us last week, and you talked about it in the top 10, Danny, was number eight pace going against number 20, Malloy, and Malloy pulls it out in overtime 13-12. What a game. You were there, Danny, right?
SPEAKER_03I was there. Coach Malone, what'd you think of the game? You saw it, Matt.
SPEAKER_00I mean, back and forth, uh pretty, pretty, uh, pretty intense, like you, like you said. Um, you know, even in saves, you know, I think uh the Malloy goalie had three three more saves in uh than than the pace uh the pace kid, but 90 shots in the game. That's a lot, that's a lot of shots. I mean, it looked like every time anybody touched the ball was going was going towards the end line or in the goal. Yeah, you know. So uh, but you know, clearing, you know, Malloy, I mean, seven fail clears. I mean, I could I can only imagine if they uh you know get two or three of those, you know, this isn't probably a uh, you know, an overtime game. But uh, you know, it was it was it was pretty exciting. It was pretty exciting to watch. So I mean, and I'm sure you know Coach Mariano's pretty you know disappointed, you know, going to uh going to the island and uh and you know losing overtime to Malloy, but uh but no, it was a great game.
SPEAKER_01As they did in the NCAAs, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. I I tell you, I I was at the game. It was a great crowd. It was a beautiful afternoon in New York. I mean, it's been so brutal here, but it was actually like 52 degrees, not a cloud in the sky, sunny out, brought a lot of people out. People have been waiting a while in New York just to get the hell out. And uh great crowd at the Malloy Pace game. And let me tell you something. This game did not disappoint. Let's first start off with the two coaches. Coach Dunn, Coach Mariano, two excellent Division II coaches, you know, set the standard in Division II, especially up here in the North. You know, they've just done so well and just done they just do such good things with their teams. And and what Dunn has done in four or five years is amazing. And what Coach Mariano has done since he's come from Sacred Heart over there at Pace has just been nothing but great, too. Constantly ranked. These teams are constantly ranked, you know. And this this game was everything that you could want in a game. For example, it had everything long scrums for ground balls, like going crazy, caused turnovers, hard defensive hustle by both teams, dodging, passing, two-man game, transition. I mean, it had everything you want in an exciting lacrosse game. The first quarter had a super frenetic pace with both teams playing aggressive D and fast offense. Trevor Lamero was able to draw first blood for the setters, but Malloy put up two unanswered with goals by Zach Krug and a sick rip from Corcoran, Tommy Corcoran. He's a good little player, man. And Malloy led two to one after one. Um, in the second quarter, the pace continued to be fast. A good five minutes went by before O. C. Odama tied it at two. Each team traded goals. We had four lead changes and four ties in the first half. Yeah. A couple of goals by Matt Baldino and Will Donowski kept the setters to within a goal. 6'5, Malloy after at the at the half.
SPEAKER_00I thought that third quarter. I thought that third quarter, you know, pace kind of took over there.
SPEAKER_03You know, I was like, ooh. Well, they scored three goals in three minutes right away.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And and Donowski scored twice. Landers buried one, and the setters led 10 to 7. Pace held Malloy to only one goal in the third. Jack Kern.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and what it's kind of what you were saying, uh, Coach Malone and Danny. When it hit 9-7, that was the first two-goal lead of the game. Yeah. In the third quarter with 55 seconds, I think, left in the in the quarter. Like it was I I just thought, I guess I was getting used to it being it's always going to be back and forth. And then when the pace opened that up to 9-7, then 10-7 after three, I thought I don't, you know, three goals in a lacrosse game is nothing, especially with these teams, especially like a team in Malloy now. They can come back. But I thought that's different than what I've seen. And sure enough, Malloy does come back.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. The fourth quarter was like the Lions turn to the fourth quarter. It was the Lions' turn to blast out three. They scored three goals in 90 seconds. Tim Morrow buried the biscuit, and Hammond scored twice, and we were tied again. We were tied up again. And then this Scentsy scored for pace 11-10. Simic for Malloy, 11-11. Simic again on a man up, 12-11 Malloy with five minutes. Danowski for pace tied in at 12 on a man up. And regulation ended with these two teams tied at 12. Again, fast paced, a lot of hitting. Uh Thomas Colford was hurt, or All-American LSM for Malloy was hurt, carried out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Shoulder injury or something. I thought he might have broken a rib. He was in pain when they left. I spoke to his sister. He was still in the ER when I spoke to her, and he was in a lot of pain. So hopefully Thomas gets better quick. Hopefully it's not a serious injury, but it didn't look good. But that's the kind of game that this game was. It was a lot of hitting down, drag out. Yeah, a lot of hitting. You know, you know, these both these coaches, they they recruit from the same area. A lot of these kids are from the New York, Long Island area. They they know each other from club ball, from high school.
SPEAKER_01You know, that look at Timmy Moreau, who's on Malloy, was at pace.
SPEAKER_03That's right. Yeah, that's right. So uh in Zach Krug, the uh St. Leo transfer buried the game winner in overtime. And uh Malloy pulls it out. 8-7 was a great.
SPEAKER_01And that that goal, he Krug had a great cut to the middle of the crease, and he and Tommy Corcoran gave him a beautiful pass. Yeah, Corcoran's a good player, man. He is very good.
SPEAKER_03He's kind of on the tiny side, like he's like that shifty, kind of like Carter Krasinski a little bit. Kind of smaller, but shifty as hell, you know, can got a great vision, loves to pass the ball. So, you know, good thing to have. Yeah, it is. It is. Uh so Malloy, you know, gets upset by Southern New Hampshire, bounce back, beat a good pace, you know, good uh good team from uh Westchester County up there and pleasant Phil.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and one thing in team stats, Coach, you talked about it on the clears, right? The that kind of Malloy wished they had a few back. Well, on the EMO, they went three for six compared to Pace's one for six. Yeah. So there it goes. That's almost even it out for them in a little bit. So that kind of surprised me when I saw that. First of all, 12 penalties, that kind of surprised me. I didn't think I remember because there was a really good pace to the game.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It was a really, really good game. And and Pace only getting one for six. You talk to Coach Mariano, he would like that a little bit better too, because he would have won. Yeah. It was a good game, man.
SPEAKER_03It was a good game. It doesn't get much better than that. Like I said, it gave the game had everything, you know, transition goals, especially early in the season. You know, just like exciting. You know, it's like, oh, oh, wow, oh, oh, oh. Yeah, some great shots, some good moves, toe drags, you know. So just a lot. Just exciting lacrosse, you know what I mean? Just it was really fun to see. It really was. And it was nice to get the hell out of the house, man. You know what I'm saying? Be honest
Offensive Player of the Week
SPEAKER_03with you. In the creeks, player of the week, offense. All right. This Kev, our offensive player of the week. I gotta give an honorable mention. There's so many, so many offensive players that do such so well. But my honorable mention this week has to go to Caden Castle. North Greenville senior attack, four goals and three assists. Played well, and uh North Greenville beat Florida Tech. They beat the number nine team in the country. We won't talk about that. But anyway, my offensive player of the week is none other than Cole Wesner, the junior attack for Lewis. He had five goals and a dominant win over number 12 uh Newberry. So congratulations, Cole. You did a great job this weekend. Offensive player of
Defensive Player of the Week
SPEAKER_03the week.
SPEAKER_01In the crease, player of the week defense. Okay, Danny and Bill, our guest analyst, host, defensive player of the week. Once again, Danny, like you said, plenty to go over. We're picking one that had a game, had a game in that overtime win against Pace. And that's Sean McCabe. Three ground balls, six cause turnovers against Pace, and he did a lot more than what just showed up on the stats. So that's our defensive player of the week. He had a great game.
Games to watch
SPEAKER_01All right, let's head to games to watch this week. And typically when we have a guest analyst, we open it up with a guest. What game this week are you looking forward to seeing there, Coach Bill Malone?
SPEAKER_00Well, you know, I'll I'll go with I'll go with uh I'll go with the uh the Wingett Belmont Abbey game. That should be interesting. Interstate robbery. You know, so I mean Chris Barrett, you know, an opportunity to coach him, and uh, you know, we'll see what uh you know obviously what winget and what uh what Abbey, you know, what they're uh you know what they're what they're up to and you know how uh how they progressed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's interesting. I mean Belmont Abbey, Wingate's gonna have a little bit of a break here, and they're coming off a loss, they're gonna be hungry to win. And and these two teams scrimmage a lot together, right, Danny, uh preseason. So they it's not like they don't know each other.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, they know each other.
SPEAKER_04They know each other. Yeah, they know each other.
SPEAKER_03It's gonna be a scrappy game, you know. Belmont Abbey, they're a scrappy bunch, you know. Coach Barrett, uh, Coach Barrett, Coach team. I mean, they're they're gonna come out, they're gonna play. He's always got good players. They play a high quality brand of ball. You know, I expect them to, you know, not roll over for Wingate. Wingate's still looking for, you know, they've only had what? Two games.
SPEAKER_01Two games.
SPEAKER_03They should have four under their belt already by now. You know what I mean? So we don't know who Wingate is yet. We're still, you know, well, we know what their offense is. We're kind of looking to see what their defense is gonna do, but I like that game.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03I like Wing. I like I like Wingate in that game now. I think I just think their depth is just a little bit they're a little bit deeper than uh than Delman Abbey, yeah. Yeah, and especially on defense, they're running a lot of guys in on defense, Wingate.
SPEAKER_04So he always does. You know, he always runs a lot of guys on on uh on defense. Fresh legs, got a couple LSMs. He's always yeah, you're right.
SPEAKER_01So I like that game. One game that actually comes out this Thursday is the first game ever in NCA D2 history for Northwest Nazarene.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Got to give him a quality bell.
SPEAKER_01There we go. Gotta give him where it is. There we go. They're playing against Quincy, and then they turn around, Danny and Bill, the next day. They go to get down to William and Jewel and play a second game. So they're really ramping up their schedule quickly.
SPEAKER_00Might as well jump in with both feet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Good to see them.
SPEAKER_03I'm really interested to see what they look like. I um I'm excited to watch them play. I actually watched Point Park play the other night.
SPEAKER_01I did too. I watched that game.
SPEAKER_03What a beautiful field, huh? Yeah. Just amazing, right?
SPEAKER_01I tell you, my son's going and getting his PhD there. I already talked to him. We're gonna when it's warmer, I'm gonna go to a game there with him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it looks really nice. And they have great uniforms. So we got two new teams. One got on the board this week, one starting this week again with Northwest Nazarene and Idaho. Idaho.
SPEAKER_01Are you kidding me? Yeah, but they're playing at Quincy.
SPEAKER_03Are you kidding me? I'm a cross team from Idaho?
SPEAKER_04Here we go. Yeah. Hopefully they're flying and not busting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that would be tough. All right, Danny, what games are you looking at?
SPEAKER_03Well, I like the Maryville-Tampa game. Yeah, yeah. I think that's gonna be good. Listen, I I Maryville is that I they're one of my teams to watch this year. They're just they have a good defense, Kev. They have quietly, they just have a quiet, good defense, and they just hold teams to less than you know eight, nine goals. They have a great offense, they move the ball well, uh, they share the rock. They're n it's it's not just one guy leading the charge there on offense.
SPEAKER_01No, you look at it, Zime, Usre, Simonson, Mickett, Tobias. I mean, they've got a list. That's right.
SPEAKER_03So Meryville, I think, is going to give Tampa everything they can handle. Because right now, Tampa offensively, hmm, I'm not their defense is stout. I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna deny Tampa's defense. They are stout. But offensively, they don't run a lot of second-line middies out there. Basically, it's the Bulls running, and if you can keep them, you know, and get them panting and where they're out of breath, then, you know, just you know, outplay them, you know what I mean? And I think Maryville's got the team to do it. Can they go into Tampa and pull it off?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I I think their offense, like you talked about Tampa's defense, they have to have a day against that Tampa's defense. The other thing, though, I would point out, I'm interested to see the goalie play, Evan Alfano, you know, and they're not playing against each other, but how they match up, how they play Weston Schmidt against Evan Alfano, and how those games. I think, you know, obviously Evan has to have a good game against that Tampa offense. They've got to be, Meryville's got to be cooking on all cylinders, which is the wrong metaphor totally, but that's what I'm going with right now to win this game.
SPEAKER_03Schmidt Schmidt has been solid for great.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's been playing better and better every game.
SPEAKER_03But, you know, a lot of balls get rebounded. He's not, he's not stopping the ball cleanly in his in his in his cross. A lot of those balls keep bouncing out into, you know, out in front, and he's luckily he's got stone and and and gumball right there to scoop up ground balls, but he's gonna have to make some stops, you know, eventually, like clean stops and and maybe stop get letting rebounds out. But he's he's been pretty good. Again, I I think Tampa's defense is great. Their offense is just I think they're okay right now. Right now. I don't know what they're gonna be like six weeks from now or four weeks from now, but right now, I think they're just okay. They're only averaging a little over 12 goals a game. And Maryville's got a stout defense, and they're deep.
SPEAKER_00They got this is gonna be a matchup.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's gonna be good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the goal the goalie, the goalie's good. I mean, Maryville's goalie is uh is is good. I mean, saw him firsthand last year. So um you know, he's pretty pretty he's he's pretty solid. Um, you know, they just you know, the leading goal scorer, I think, for uh for Maryville is 16, you know, 16 goals and one assist. So I'm sure they're gonna be uh I'm sure Tampa's defense is gonna be keying on uh keying on him. Yeah. Um so you know, and you got other guys with you know eight points. Um I think was it uh yeah, Wyatt Robertson, 16-1 on the on the year, and the other kids are you know four and four, four and four, four and three, and three and three. So, you know, um like you said, Danny, you're gonna find we're gonna find out, you know, you know, Tampa's offense versus you know that uh that Maryville defense and and the goalie. Um should be a uh should be a good game. I think yeah, hopefully it's a good game. Hopefully it's a good game. Right.
SPEAKER_01So another game in Florida is Rollins playing at Flagler. What do you think of that game, Bill?
SPEAKER_00Um, I mean, I watched Flagler play. Um I watched him play against Florida Southern the other night. I mean, they they do some very, very nice things. Um I mean, I think they play uh they play pretty pretty solid offense. The McDonald kids pretty uh pretty pretty good. Uh I would say. Um but uh you know Flagler uh I it for against against Florida Southern, I mean it was it was it was tight there for you know for a little while. Um you know, so we'll see what uh you know what uh you know what they can do, you know, in their uh you know, in their game, you know, coming up. Um trying to think who else I saw them saw them play against.
SPEAKER_01I'm actually looking at the schedule I saw the other thing is so yeah, Flagler almost made it lost a close one to Tampa, eight to seven.
SPEAKER_00That's the other, yeah, that's the other game I was.
SPEAKER_01Rollins just lost a close one to Lenore Ryan. They also lost to Florida Tech, but that was you know, Florida Tech, like we talked about, what who's gonna show up? I think that's the same thing with Rollins. Which Rollins team is gonna show up? They're playing three different goalkeepers so far Mason Masterson, Colin Seltters, who used to be a limestone player, and Nick Catlino. So, like, are they you know where are they gonna settle in on the I'm interested to see if they're gonna settle in, if they're gonna play each a half. Whereas Flagler, Wade Lamone, yeah, has been a steady hand for Flagler in the bowl.
SPEAKER_03Been playing well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, absolutely. And like you said, I mean, it's gonna depend on you know which Rollins team, you know, shows up. Um, I mean, I've seen I've seen a couple of their a couple of their games. Thank God the uh Sunshine State Conference uh games are free so you don't have to go through Flow Sports. Yeah. Um But uh, you know, I mean like like like Danny said, I mean, it's been kind of up and down with you know with consistency and stuff. So, you know, if I think if it if you know that you know Rollins brings their their their their A game, I mean I think that they could you know do some do some damage to uh you know to Flagler. So it all depends on which team is gonna show up. But you know, I think uh Flagler's offense is is pretty pretty impressive. I mean they got good goaltending. Um, you know, Rollins offense, you know, when they get it going, can be pretty uh can be pretty good. So it's gonna be uh you know which team which team shows up, honestly.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I like Coach Duncan. You know, I just think he is a really good coach. And what he's done there in a short amount of time there at Flagler has just been nothing short of just really amazing to me. Pretty easy place to recruit, too. Yeah, definitely 100%. I want to go there. I told him. I said, send me some swag. I want to come.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Rollins ain't too bad either. I'll tell you that campus is they're both.
SPEAKER_03This is a bigger game for Rollins, I think. You know, I this is a game that they kind of need a win, I think. Yeah, and this is a good test for them. But I don't know, man. I like Flagler in this game. I think Flagler's playing consistency. Yeah, they're tough at home, they're a good coach, they're athletic, and Rollins is I don't know. They've been, like you said, coach, inconsistent up and down a little bit.
SPEAKER_00So I like I'm gonna take the I'm gonna take the opposite. I'm gonna take Rollins. I'll take Rollins. You know, I mean they played LR pretty tight, 13-12. Um, you know, so I mean LR's defense ain't the same. Their goaltending's not the same. I mean, uh you know they're struggling in goal.
SPEAKER_03They they really are. They're looking for goalies. I mean, they've had they've played at least three or four goalies already in their three games.
SPEAKER_00I'm sure Ryan, you know, Cromp will figure that out. I mean, Greg, Greg is, you know, is a hell of a coach. Um defensively.
SPEAKER_03I think he's been working not with the goalies, though. I think he's been working more with the uh defense. Oh, Ryan?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, uh yeah. Crompton, yeah. Oh yeah. That's just he was a good goalie.
SPEAKER_00I mean, uh, yeah, he was a great goalie. Yeah, he's a good, he's a good goalie. And you know, they've had goalies. They've had uh they've had you know good goalies in the past. I mean, the last I think the last two years. Pennsylvania they've yeah, I mean, after after he left, I mean, um, you know, that's where they've got to be. I mean, they're I think both their both their goalies are below you know 45 percent uh on on the on the uh on the year. And uh I mean that's that's tough.
SPEAKER_03Uh you know, you're getting you know so you put you're putting pressure on the offense now, you know. You're putting pressure on the offense, and now the offense is starting to squeeze a little bit, they're holding on to that stick a little tighter, maybe, maybe taking that that shot that you wouldn't take because LR's offense is good. Donnie Powell, Mattish. Yeah, they they got some good good players, like all American type players there. So I think LR will figure that out, you know.
SPEAKER_00Maybe they use the offense to protect the defense a little bit, you know. So, I mean, they got a good face-off kid. Uh, I mean, Shekai Bowen, who is there, who was uh, you know, he was a redshirt for us. Um, pretty, pretty solid face-off kid. And um trying to think of the kid's name. Who's uh who's their who's their uh their starting faceoff? Mancini. Yeah, Mancini. Yeah, Mancini. Italian. I mean, how can I forget that? Uh but uh yeah, I mean, he's he he's he's a great face-off guy. I mean, you know, they get the ball, and you know, hopefully they can, you know, make those possessions count and you know, take that, take, you know, take those possessions away where they're not the defense is not seeing it, you know, and cut down on uh you know, cut down on that area where, you know, like I said, you're using the offense to protect the defense a little bit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because uh like that's why I think Rollins played a little bit better than maybe they they are against LR. I'm not gonna be able to get it. Everybody brings your best.
SPEAKER_00Everybody brings their best.
SPEAKER_03100%. You know, I'm not sold on LR's defense yet. Like, there's so many questions I have with so many teams yet. I haven't seen that that super clean game yet. You know, like again, the team that I'm watching scary, that's scary to me is Maryville.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. All right, what other games, Danny, are you looking at?
SPEAKER_03All right. Um maybe that North Greenville Emery Riddle game might be a little bit more important now. Okay? Yeah. I think this game comes into fruition now because both of these teams are ranked, you know, and uh I think I think North Greenville needs a win against a ranked team again to keep that momentum going. I think Emory Riddle after the loss today to see why. Right, you know, that was kind of a shocker a little bit, I think you know, but anyway, I think I think this is a big game for Emory Riddle. They're gonna have to play well and and and do some good things on the offensive side to beat North Greenville because North Greenville's offense is is very very lethal, and they're gonna score goals.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was gonna say it'd be interesting to see whose team really shows up between North Greenville and Emmy Riddle. We said that for so many other teams. We said that about, you know, what we're is Rollins gonna, how is Rollins gonna play? Blah, blah, blah, blah. I think what's interesting is what we said earlier. This is another one of those games where we haven't figured out these teams when Emmy Emmy Riddle started off with a loss and they came around and played better, and they've, you know, they're they're playing well. North Greenville looked like they were gonna beat Anderson and then got killed in the fourth quarter. They come back with low lose to Monteval, and now they beat Florida Tech at home. It's it's still a work in progress early on in the season.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I agree. I agree.
SPEAKER_01All right, one other game I'm looking at is Mercy at Bentley.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I haven't seen Bentley play this year.
SPEAKER_01Bentley got they played Bridgeport for their first game on Wednesday, but Mercy's really their test. You know, Bentley right now uh was number 15, Mercy number 17, Mercy's 3-0, but has two one-goal games, and it was overtime with Assumption and squeaked out one with Wilmington. So I think this is gonna be a really close game. Like we said, I we really won't be able, I don't think we'll be able to tell how Mercy, I mean how Bentley is as a team against Bridgeport. This is the game that'll see where Bentley stands this season.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's really kind of their first match, real match, you know. So exactly. I don't know if I want to put that much into it.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, that's the way you see where they stand as far as at this part of the season. This is a really the first really good test.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Mercy's 3-0, and you know, Assumption's a good team. Assumption's a good team. I had them in my top 20. Very good team.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, they're a very good team.
SPEAKER_03They don't suck. They don't suck. They're good. They're gonna give teams game. Mercy, beat them and haul down to win that game. And and then you saw And Wilmington's a good team.
SPEAKER_01So, like, yeah, they've had tests already. They're they're battle-tested already.
SPEAKER_03And their confidence is built. You could see it from each game. I watched each Mercy game because my kid Mag my man Magyar is over there. So I'm watching them, and each game, you could just see they are playing a little bit more confident, a little bit more confident, a little bit more confident. So I like I like Mercy in this game going against Bentley. Kinda. I think they have a little bit of the edge, having a couple of games under their belts, some tough one-goal games. So they're finding out, they're figuring out how to win games at the end, and they're playing with confidence.
SPEAKER_01I'm with you on this one. I'm I would pick Mercy also in this one. Bentley's second game. Mercy, like I said, is battle tested. Bentley is going to come off probably a win against Bridgeport, and this will be a test for them. It won't be any kind of litmus test of where they're going to be at the end of the season. This is, but this is their first real competition, and I think Mercy's already been there, done that so far this season. So now they are playing at Bentley, so that's the only thing that I would say.
SPEAKER_00Well, that Bentley game, I think, got rescheduled. Bentley Bridge Bridgeport got rescheduled. So Oh, did it? Yeah. So uh their first one. This will be their first game. Yeah. So I'm sure they're gonna be jacked out of their mind, but you know, like you said, you know, Mercy's got some uh got some experience, you know. They, you know, won a couple one goal, one goal games. Um working on the kinks, figuring things out. Yeah, and just hopefully they're not looking forward because the next two games I think are against uh Caldwell and um and Fr. Uh Mercy. So, you know, hopefully they're not looking ahead. So uh Bentley's a good team. I mean, Coach Murphy's uh Coach Murphy's a good coach. Yeah, you know, so uh I'm sure we'll have those guys ready. Should be a uh should be a good one. I'm sure those guys will be excited and you know they'll probably be jacked out of their mind playing at uh you know playing at home, you know, against uh you know, against a good Mercy squad. Yeah, 100%.
SPEAKER_03I agree.
Game of the Week
SPEAKER_01Danny, who do we have this week for our game of the week?
SPEAKER_03Ah, battle the undefeated, Kev. I think it's gonna be a good one. We have the Catawba Indians and the St. Leo Lions. Kataba's traveling down to St. Leo, and uh I think this is going to be a good matchup. I think it's a big game for Katawba. It's a big game for Kataba. If even if they lose but are competitive, you're gonna have to keep an eye on Katawa now in the South region. They're going to be a squad, I think. I think they've just they've added guys to their roster. Coach Murphy's a good coach. He's got the ingredients now. He's starting to put it all together. They've started off fantastic this year, undefeated. And then you got St. Leo Lions, who, in my opinion, is one of the better teams in the country, Kev. I know we're at they're at like 12 or 14 or whatever they are this week. Yeah. I think they're better than that. That's just my opinion. That's just one guy's opinion. Solid in goal, solid at face off, solid at defense, and lethal on iPhone. Offense with two with like six attackmen that can score. I mean, they're just and then they got Rauchy, and then they got Ben Baker, and then they got Palmer. Greg Palmer, yeah. They're they're tough, man. So I like St. Leo at home.
SPEAKER_01And I'm coach, what do you think about this? You you have experience with probably both these teams.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we do. Um, you know, we it we Catawba, you know, has definitely improved. So, you know, they gave us uh they gave us uh uh you know all that we can handle, you know, last year. You know, uh I know Mike personally. I actually uh played with his older brother and recruited both of them when I was at Pfeiffer. Wow. So I tried to uh tried to get Mike to come to Fifer, but he went to Kataba along with his uh his younger brother Tim. So um, but yeah, I mean they they've improved. Um it's I think it's gonna be a good test to uh to kind of see where uh you know where Kataba is, you know, especially in the uh in the region. Uh I just hope that uh they don't get caught up, that it's not a uh vacation. They're down there for a business trip, you know, get caught up in the uh in the nice weather and uh, you know, and uh you know hopefully you know um they can put on a uh put on a good show. But you know, I mean they got uh you know they got taken a hands full with uh with Palmer and uh was it Konigan and those guys. I mean, those they're putting up some points, you know. They played, you know, a couple couple, you know, decent teams, you know. They also played, you know, Florida Southern already. So um, you know, they're gonna, you know, it's good it's gonna be a good test to to kind of see where where Kataaba is. So but uh, you know, I think uh I think I'll give the edge to uh St. Leo.
SPEAKER_01I agree with both of you. I give the edge of St. Leo. I just think they've got too much firepower. I do really love the way where Catawba is going. I think they're really building. I'm not sure they're at St. Leo's level unless St. Leo overlooks a team like Kataaba. You said the same, Coach, you said like this has got to be a business trip for Kataaba. I'm sure Coach Murphy is saying the same exact thing to his players, right? Like, we're down there for business. Look where we are right now. This is our big test. St. Leo may be looking, I don't know. Um you know, Coach Jorgensen knows how to coach too, so I I think I think the world of him too. So I do give the the edge, or I I think St. Leo will win this game. It'll I and I also agree with you, Danny, that this is one of those games that if Kataba keeps it close, that's in my opinion, from where they had been and where they're progressing to you don't n there is no such thing as a moral victory, but that'll show you where they stand really in the South right now and the the threat they can be uh to other teams, especially in the sack.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're not I mean there's they're they're not uh you know, they're not gonna be those that that team that's you know at the the bottom of bottom of the sack anymore. I mean, they're gonna you know they're gonna compete. I mean they're you know, they're not uh you know, I don't want to mention any names, but you know, they're not they're they're they're they're they're not gonna be at the uh the bottom anymore. I mean Mike's done a great job of you know of building that program up and bringing in some some talented uh talented players to uh you know to Salisbury, North Carolina.
SPEAKER_04I totally agree with that. I I like him as a coach.
SPEAKER_03I think he's done a marvelous job there.
Shout outs
SPEAKER_01Let's move on to shout outs. I've got a few. First, Danny, you hit it and said it already. The Point Park Pioneers of Pittsburgh PA. You gotta shout him out. First win ever in their history in their first season, second game, third game. I watched that game, and the other thing I would say, Danny, it was more fun to watch the players celebrate. I think they may have had a few high C's, Danny, after that. They were pumped, man.
SPEAKER_03They were pumped. Beautiful field. Yeah. I like their uniforms. They were sharp, the Point Park Pioneers from Pittsburgh. They played well. Yeah, they look good. Yeah, a little, they're young still. There was some youngness on the field that night, but but nonetheless, you know, great, great way, great, what just a great night for the Pioneers down in Pittsburgh. What a field, what a stadium, just gorgeous.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I can't wait to go see it. All right. Next shout out goes to Virginia State goalkeeper Jace Wiggins. He registered his 400th career save. Yeah, baby, that's a good job right there. That's there are plenty of goalies that probably have more career saves they have. Remember, he's a junior. But he started this program with Coach Church. And to reach that and what he's doing and what they're building there, that deserves a shout-out. I I love it. And then final shout-out, it's not lacrosse related, but it goes out to both the men's and women's U.S. Olympic hockey teams, both beating Canada 2-1 in overtime. Both great games to watch and talk about barn burners.
SPEAKER_03That was exciting, man. That's what everything and being an American, I mean, why do we why was is hockey the sport that brings America together at the Olympics? It's hockey, right? It's not any other sport that really brings Americans. I mean, people were lining up at four o'clock in the morning to go drinking and on the West Coast to watch the game. Yeah, you know, it just brings it hockey, hockey at Olympic time, and that was crazy. It was great, exciting game. Exciting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and the the the men's was so was the women's. If you watch that, I mean they were down one zip and they they scored by pulling the goalie to make it 1-1. And then they had another one where they had this long pass in overtime, three on three, then they that was buried. It was just really exciting. I didn't get to watch that game live, but I got to watch a lot of the the replays of the different. It was just they both were great games, and so hats off to both of them beating Canada and and bringing it home. Good job, boys. So with that, we have to thank Coach Bill Malone for coming on. It was great having you. Once again, I say this almost every time. We have guests come on, and I'm like the third knucklehead, your your chief knucklehead by the end of this game there, uh, Coach Malone. Thanks so much for coming on. It's been great having you.
SPEAKER_00I appreciate it. You know, and I'll tell I'm gonna take Danny up on that offer for uh dinner at Claudio's in Greenport next time I'm up there.
SPEAKER_03So uh man, you come.
SPEAKER_00Let's go. Let's go. We're up there. My uh my better half's uh sister-in-law has a house right there in uh in Greenport. So uh we try and make it up there every uh every now and then. So I have a I have a better restaurant.
SPEAKER_03I have a better one. My cousin Tommy's restaurant, Northport, Arlo. Beautiful. I'll bring the wall, I'll bring the wallet though.
SPEAKER_04Good, because I don't have a job.
SPEAKER_01And we don't pay much being knuckleheads, let me tell you. I get paid, I get paid in laughs.
SPEAKER_03Bill, we really appreciate you coming on tonight and taking the time to hang out with the two knuckleheads. We hope you had a good time.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I had a great time, you know, staying involved. And, you know, it's the the most lacrosse I've I've probably watched outside of uh game film for us in the last you know 21 years. So uh, you know, it was it was fun to watch and you know, watch other, watch other teams and kind of get a perspective and you know, kind of get the juices flowing, but you know, still still retired.
SPEAKER_03How about this? When 20 time comes, we get you come on, we do it again. What do you think? Absolutely. All right, sounds good.
SPEAKER_00That's fine. I'll have a have a night shift, Joe.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, I guess that does it for tonight. I think, Danny, with that invite for another time, this episode, that's a wrap. That's a wrap, yeah.
