Things are good, man. Things are going. You know, actually, we always talk about the weather. It started to change here this past weekend. It was up around 80, then it dropped down again. But it's it's it's slowly creeping up. The buds are on the trees. It's one of those times, Danny. We're getting into the thick of it.

Yeah, it was uh about 40 this morning with a good 20 mile an hour breeze, making it feel like, you know, 32. Not the warmest day in New York City, windy, kind of. Little sun, little clouds, little sun. It's not here yet. It's spring. Yeah. But for Joe Vedovnik, for Joe Vedovnik. Oh, Don Henley.

Our top 10 countdown week eight. Number one at Delphi. Rolling, rolling, rolling. Keep them doggies rolling. Raw. Yes, the Panthers just keep rolling. They beat number 19 Bentley in a kind of a close, kind of slow kind of game. 12-6 at Delphi. Uh they go to 7-0 and they host Mercy this evening, yeah. At Mahatman Field over there in Garden City.

So this evening, so people know, we're recording on Wednesday. It's dropping tomorrow. So it is this.

I forgot to tell them. Yeah. I think they figured it out now. Yeah, they do. The hardcore listeners do anyway. Number two, Anderson lost to number six Wingate 1918 in an absolute thriller of a game, seven and one. And they turn around and beat Coker 28 to 15, Anderson. So they took one on the chin and then turned around and just knocked a snot out of Coker, putting up 28 on him.

And I'm sure they came in that game angry because I'll tell you that Wingate Anderson game, let's talk about that really quickly. Sure. I thought my thoughts before going into that game is Wingate's got to start out fast because Anderson always has a good second half, especially a fourth quarter. And you know, we talked about this in the conference preview and talked about how lacrosse reference was talking about the clutch gene, and I was wondering if Wingate was going to have the clutch gene this year. Realistically, Anderson's had the clutch gene because they always come back in the fourth quarter. But it was Wingate that had it this time and beat him out in 1918. The other thing I'd say about this game that this was an epic game. If you want to watch a game that's just obviously with the score, but full of excitement, and realistically, Danny, I thought this was going to overtime. It was that close of a game. It was just exciting to watch.

Gave gave Anderson the ball with 40 seconds left, and I was like, they're gonna score. They're gonna score. Because that was just a thrilling game. I mean, both teams just so fast on offense. And, you know, Henderson went up, what, was it six to two?

Yeah, I think they were up, they were up five one in the first quarter.

Yeah, like it was it didn't look good from what you did.

In fact, Danny, that was the thing. I had left, we had recorded, I left to go walk the dog. I thought I'd get back before the game started. I was like 10 minutes late. I turn on the game as I start editing the podcast. It's already 5'1 Anderson, and it's still in the first quarter.

I'm like, what the it didn't surprise me though. I mean, like I picked Anderson to win that game. I said Anderson at home, coming off that Tampa victory. You know, they're flying high. They're just they play so fast, they got so many guys that can that can that can bury biscuits, Kev. Their defense is great. Lachlan's been great in goal. They've just been hitting on all cylinders. But you know what? Wingate Wingate showed a lot of balls in that game, man. They showed me something. I I didn't know if they had in them.

Right. I I go back to that clutch gene that Anderson showed out on every game so far this year. And what we said before, right? Just because Wingate won this time against Anderson, no clue how it's gonna happen in the conference championships.

You know, who knows what these teams are gonna be? Are they gonna be one and two? I mean, I I mean, both teams have to play Newberry still. Both Wingate and Anderson both have to play Newberry still. So Newberry's gonna be a tough out. So that sack is really tough. It's a three-team kind of mix right now in the sack with Wingate being undefeated, the only undefeated team in the sack as of right now.

And I think that's it. And then they no, Newberry's undefeated as well. Undefeated as well. But they have two losses, and Wingate has one. So that game, though that Newberry game for both teams is a big game. I mean, it means a lot. It means seedings, and you know what? A possible bid. That's a possible bid team.

Somebody in this conference, I think, is gonna get a bid. You're gonna get your conference tournament champion, they're gonna go get an automatic.

I believe somebody from the sack. I don't know if the GLVC is gonna have three teams in the sack this year. I mean, in the tournament this year. So that was an unbelievable game. And Vinny Patrico was amazing. He had an amazing game.

All right, so number two, and number three, Tampa beat Florida Southern 14-7. Three goals for Tommy Ortega in that one. And you know what? Tampa's a good team, too. They keep rolling along. They're 10-1, Kev. Number four, St. A's beat Franklin Pierce rather handily, 17-3. Seven goals for Ben Turpin. Uh the Hawks are five-0, and they face Bentley next, Kev. Should be a good game.

Number five, Seton Hill lost to number 11 pace, 12-10 in a game to watch. We'll talk about that one. Seton Hill drops to 5-2, and they kind of enter an easy part of their schedule right now. They face Wheeling, Davison Elkins, Tiffin, and Malone, Seaton Hill. So they got kind of some cupcakes coming up. Yeah. I don't know if that's going to be good for them or bad for them.

Exactly. Number six, Wingate Bulldogs beat number two, Anderson 1918. Eleven goals for Vinnie Petrico in that game. Wingate Dogs are seven and one right now. Yeah. Yeah. They beat Mars Hill on Saturday. Yeah. That wasn't in my notes. Thank you, Kevin. I appreciate that. I'm here to back you up. Thanks, man. I need it today. Number eight, Newberry. Oh, no, I'm sorry. Number seven, Maryville beat Montevallo. 9-8 in a close one. Good game. Kevin? Not expecting that kind of in a way. Merryville is 6-2, and they face William Jewell next. Number eight, Newberry beat Emory and Henry. Poor Emory and Henry, those guys. I feel terrible for them. 26-6. The Wolves go to 9-2, and they have two tough ones coming up, Kev, like we just spoke about at Anderson, and then they host Wingate on the fourth, I think, or the third, something like that. Number nine, Lewis beat Quincy. Are you ready for this? 30 goals they put up on Quincy. Are you kidding me? 30 to 8, 7 goals for Paul Rokowski. He is just on fire this year. They're 8-2 to the Flyers, and they host Meryville, which should be a good game, Kev. Conference game. Here we go. And number 10, Colorado Mesa beats CUI rather handily, 19-8. Dylan Pless had three goals in that one. And Mesa goes to 6-2, and they're at Westminster.

Yeah, some uh scores to note, real quick. Number 14, St. Leo took down PBA in a pretty good game. 15-11. Greg Palmer with five goals in that game. Number 19, Rollins over Lynn in Sunshine State play, Kev 17-8. Yeah. How about Rockhurst over U Indy? Yeah. Wow. Wow. Big game. 12 to 9. They beat him.

Let's get some applause in there. Tiffin over Davison Elkins, 18-10. Belmont Abbey had a good week this week, boy. Yeah. They put up 23 on Young Harris, beat him 23-6, and then last night beat North Greenville in Conference, Carolina play.

What was the score? 9-8? 9-8. They won by one. I watched that game. It was close. It was tight.

Yeah, just about. Someone would be up. And then finally, near the end of the game, Belmont Abbey would always score. Then North Greenville would have to come back.

Cost a couple of turnovers. Got a couple of extra possessions at the end of that game, Belmont Abbey. I'll tell you, man, they're tough, scrappy Crusaders. They're tough and scrappy. I wouldn't want to play them. How about Northwood? Here we go, talking about Northwood. They go to 5-2. They beat Malone 18-1. This is a second year program, Cap. Yeah. They're going to their conference playoffs.

And you know what? They got a chance to maybe win one and move up in their division. I tell you, man, I'm Northwood has really been remarkable. How about Bridgeport? 22-4 over Felician. So Bridgeport goes to four and four. And that's about all the games that I've got to be able to do. Yeah, I've got to be able to do that.

Yeah, those were all good. Um I had I also had Wilming beating Chestnut Hill 11-8. Which was uh you would expect that. Chestnut Hill put up a pretty good fight, though. In fact, I think they were up for a little bit in that game. And then the Lion Cup, Emmanuel against Young Harris at Emmanuel. Emmanuel pulls it out 16-15. Wow. All right. So that's another one. Yeah. So those are some just some other notable scores. Before we get into a little more detail on the weekend. Oh,

Week in Review

one other one. And we'll start the weekend review with this one. This happened last Wednesday, and we'll talk about it quickly. This was obviously from Coach Dunn. We talked about Lise McCrae playing against Barton and then following up with North Greenville on Wednesday. When we recorded last week, the game had not been played yet. Right. All I saw, they win it 10-9 in overtime. And the only thing I see, Leez McCrae does, the only thing I see is the overtime goal by Kay Nanagi was just amazing. Kind of a backhand shovel into the goal. And of course, knowing how Lise McCrae in the past years had played, I figured that Liz McCrae had to like North Greenville was winning the game, and Lise McRae had to like come back. Right. You know what I mean? Like they had us get no, they led for a lot of that game. They led. They controlled most of the game. They were up by several goals. North Greenville had didn't tie it until it was 9-9. At the very end. And the reason, so it wasn't the scoring on Lee's McRae, which was good. It was their defense. Their defense was key. Sticks in lanes, bodies on bodies. I mean, they were they were putting it to North Greenville, not giving them the looks they wanted whatsoever. It was just a great game to watch, and just see how.

Yeah, and they gave him some money behind him, and they said, go for it, kid. And that's what he's doing, and he's doing a great job. And he's only in year two. You see the big difference already. And just wait two more years. Watch. Conference Carolina is not going to be the same anymore.

Nope. And yeah, exactly. So let's go on to some other games that you and I watch and have more notes on. Let's start off the one where I have to eat crow and you don't. And that's Seton Hill against Pace. At Pace, Seton Hill pulls it out 12-10. I'm the one that said Seton Hill would win. Pace pulls it out. Now Seton Hill, Danny, started off strong. And they were up 3-0. And the first very quickly in the game, first three possessions. First two minutes. Yeah. And then the first possession for Pace resulted in a shot clock violation. But after that, Pace just came back.

Yeah, I mean, I thought it was a really good game. I I I saw some things in Pace that I really liked that I haven't seen in a year or so from them. And that was solid midfield play. Yeah. Their midis were dodging hard. They were dodging fast. Their offense was playing fast. Like you said, the Griffiths exploded to that super fast three-goal start. Uh Dexter Hanigan buried the first biscuit, then Nate Herbster, then Andrew Matthew got on the board, and it was three zip like that. What did Coach Mariano do? Called a timeout. Yeah. And he pulled Kern.

Yeah. And remember what I what I said yet last week. I said, Will Jack Kern be able to handle the potent offense of Seton Hill? That's exactly what I think. Mariano pulled him quicker than I thought he would. And he they he put in Hunter Wilcox, right? Yeah. And that guy had a game.

He had a really good game. He had 14 saves. He was at like 66%.

I think, I think the announcers said he had seven saves in his career before this game.

Oh, really? I didn't hear that. Yeah. I didn't hear so wow, there you go. So again, coach changed goalies and it seemed to settle the setters. The setters was beginning to settle down, and they got on the board when Matt Baldino buried one. It was Seton Hill was winning 4-2 after one. Carter Lee made it 5-2, and it was like, all right, is Pace coming back or what are they doing? And then here they started to answer, and the setters answered strong with four unanswered goals to give Pace a 6-5 lead.

Yeah, and that's then this is what I had in my notes too is I think that was the difference. They went on two two four-goal runs. The first one to get them ahead for the first time. The second one sealed the game. Then the second one sealed the deal because when they had that one, they were tied 8-8. And they put it out of reach.

Yeah, you're right. I like the one play that Griffin Lynch made, a beautiful pass to Gavin Erickson that actually tied it up for Seton Hill. That was a great pass, and it was like six seconds left on the shot clock. It was like, you know, the one of those goals that you don't want to give up at the end of a shot clock, or you know what a goal, you know what I mean?

And and they were able to tie it up. And I and it was 6'6 at half. I mean, we had ourselves a ball game, you know what I mean?

Yeah, and what was interesting about that too, Danny, is I wrote this note it was a last second goal, basically. It was right at the end of the half that Seton Hill tied it up. But I thought the Setter's D really started to control that game in that that second quarter, even and despite that last minute goal.

Yeah, no, I agree with you. I s well in the third quarter, I felt that both defenses kind of flexed their muscles a little bit.

And I felt that pace was beginning to start to take a little bit of control of the game. They were kind of kind of controlling the pace of the game, if you understand if it makes any sense. They were making little mistakes, just not playing Seton Hill Griffith type ball to me. And I felt that pace in that second half was able to kind of wear down Seton Hill a little bit.

Again, I felt that the Middies were playing great for pace. Um they were, like I said, dodging hard, dodging fast, drawing doubles, making good passes, smart moves, moving the ball quickly. I just felt that their offense played a lot faster than Seton Hill's, you know? And and they just they were bet they were the better team pace that day.

They really were. Yeah, you talk about guys like Jake Sensi, who Two goals sweeping across the middle, two outside goals back to back for pace. I agree with you. I I and that was part of their their four-goal run.

I just think that they Yeah, gave him a three-goal cushion with like five minutes left. Yeah. And you know what? Seton Hill buried two more before the end of the game, but it was already, you know, they were behind like three, four goals. That the two goals weren't gonna be a big thing.

Exactly right. They didn't have enough time to get all back four.

What's remarkable is how horrible Pace was at the dot. They got their ass kicked at face-offs.

So, and what even with that, they were able to just I don't know, they just were they were able to control, especially in the second half. Their defense looked good, their offense looked good, and they just played much better. And Pace Setter's a 2-0 in conference, and they're 7-1, Kev. And they're in the top 10. Right where I said they'd be in the beginning of the year.

Yeah. Yeah, no, they they had it, they had a great game. And the other thing I'd say, yeah, you're right. The face-offs, Pace got killed 19-7, Seton Hill had 19 to pace of seven. The other thing was uh penalties, Seton Hill had six to pace three, right? And they had four in that first half.

And I think that helped pace as well. Whether they they only got one goal out of that, but guess what? That keeps Seton Hill off the offensive side of the ball.

You're right. So for Seton Hill, Dexter Hannigan had two goals and assists, Carter Green had a goal and two assists, Gavin Erickson had two goals and assists, Caden Granberg had a goal and assist. Andrew Matthew also had a goal and assist. Nabed Herbster had a goal. Righty Grudy had a goal. Tucker Zostan was pretty good. 19 for 26 at the dot. And Will Cody was excellent, I thought, in goal with 14 saves. Let me tell you something. He made some big saves. It probably could have been more. It could probably, Pace probably could have scored maybe three, four more goals. He made some really good saves.

I mean, if you look at Will Cody, you you almost expect that. You've seen Will have those games. Hunter Wilcox coming in cold, taking over for Jack Kern and having the game he did. It was it was it was great goalie play.

No pressure, Hunter, I'm sure cut, as Mariano's tapping him on the bat butt. Get out there. No pressure, kid. No pressure. So for the pace setters, they go to 7-1. They're 2-0 in conference. Matt Baldino, three goals and assists. Will Danowski and Jake Sensi each with three. Declan Landers had a two-goal game and an assist. Trevor Lamerole had a goal. Chris Butler, three caused turnovers. They struggled. They sent out three guys James Rosslin, Alex Garbo Garra, and Hugo Valavra. And they were a combined seven for 26 at the dot. They struggled those three. Jack Kern was pulled, and Hunter Wilcox went in and 14 saves and 66%. So Pace Settlers win that game. Yeah, I love it. I love it.

All right, let's move on to a game I watched, and we talked about last week. I thought would be interesting because Davenport was undefeated in conference play. Walsh, I think, had one loss at the time. They were trying to stay even with Davenport, get up with Davenport because they had already lost to Northwood. Davenport hasn't played Northwood. You talked about Northwood earlier, and that's going to be a telling thing. Davenport pulls this game out 10-7. They're up 3-2 after one. Walsh then scores the first two in the second quarter, and I'm thinking, okay, is that going to be now is Walsh going to begin? It was a pretty close game all the time. Davenport makes it 6-4 with 104 left in the second quarter. And then they never that that two goal cushion is all they needed. They never relinquished the lead. It was 6-5 at half. The game was very, very methodical. Lots of 6v6. Lots of taking time getting players in. Not the normal things. Not like you saw we saw in the Anderson Wingate game. Not like you see in a lot of other games. Not a lot of transition. There was a very, very controlled game, very methodical. The other thing I would say is Walsh really controlled the middle of the field a lot and were stopping clears, but they couldn't convert those into goals. So then Davenport really had the had the advantage. It was 7-6 after three. They only traded a goal apiece in the third. So 6-5 at half, 7-6-3. Then Davenport gets two in a row to gain their biggest lead, 9-6 with 14-02 left in the game. And Walls finally scores at the 451 mark, but you know, then Davenport gets one. It's basically 10-7 at the end. Davenport remains unbeaten in conference play. Which is really interesting. I really want to see the Davenport Northwood game. Team stats were pretty even, except for face-off, which Davenport beat them 2-1. They had 14 to Walsh's seven. So a really, really good game. Great game for Davenport. You could tell how excited they were after winning that game. For Davenport, Luke Eichbauer had three goals, one assist. Luke Fitz had two goals, one assist. Jaden Ashley had two goals. Tommy Becker had one goal, two assists, and Charlie Fritz had one goal and one assist. And Ryan Nahm had three ground balls and three calls turnovers. And then for Walsh, Ty Pilkington, we've called his name before, two goals, one assist. Parker Stanway had two goals. Richard Salvino had a goal and an assist. And Maguire Smith on defense, five ground balls, three cost turnover is a really good game for him and a losing effort. But I think Davenport just put on a little bit more show on offense, just separated themselves a little bit more when they had the ball. It was a really good game.

Davenport sitting on the top of the GMAC is just incredible to me. Yeah. Well, Seton Hill's undefeated too, but Northwood's sitting third. They're 3-0 in conference. Davenport's 4-0 in conference. Seton Hill's 2-0. Northwood's 5-2, and Seton Hill's 5-2. If you would have said that in the beginning of the season, that, you know, when they start like start conference play, Davenport is going to be sitting at one, and Seton Hill's going to be sitting at 2, and Northwood's going to be sitting at 3. This game is a really close game, closer than what the score kind of indicates. But that last seven, eight minutes, you could see Florida Tech's size and physicality beginning to wear down Emory Riddle.

Not a whole lot, but two or three good scorers there, you know, and their defense is keeping them in games. Yeah.

Each team only 16 to 15. Wasn't like they outturned each other around. Really close game. Until that physicality, that bigness, that strength, that, you know, it's like Michigan, you know, Big Ten football going against, you know, less Texas Tech a little bit. Just kind of Texas Tech is good, but they're just kind of chipped away. They're just size, their, you know, they're just their strength, their physicality. I just think was a little bit too much for Emory Middle in this game.

Like every one of those games that those four play is like a must-see game. Like what who's going to win?

Florida Tech found their stride and he was able to get two back. It was 3-2 after one, Emory Riddle. Basically, Kev, to me, both teams played clean lacrosse with both goalies playing very strong, playing very well in goal. They're both making stops. Each team was able to work their offenses, you know, and their defenses, and and and goals by strong. Uh who else? Uh Gadomsky and Carter kind of got Florida Tech back into the game before the end of the first half. It was tied at six at the half. The third period I felt was more of the same. Clean lacrosse. Both teams playing well, goalies making saves. It was a 2-1, just traded goals. They backed, just basically traded goals in that third quarter. But the fourth quarter, that's when you could see Florida Tech begin to pull away. They outscored him 4-1 in that frame. You could see the physicality just starting to wear down Emory Riddle. And I thought I thought Emory Riddle played a good game, but just ran into a better Florida Tech team.

Jackson Holden, Will Flanagan, and Nita Kidwell were combined, 11 for 22 at the Dotton Reed curve with 14 saves in the goal for Emory Riddle. I thought he had a great game for Florida Tech. There's that mama. There's that man again. Thomas Strong with three goals. That kid's looking really good. He's tough. Jack Cornwell had two. Brooks Van Esslon had two goals and assists. Ryan Chancer had one goal and one assist. Dawson Long had a goal. Gadomsky had a goal. And Bat Carter, Shale Sager, and Jax uh I'm sorry. Bat Carter and Shale Sager combined 11 for 22 at the dot. So they split at the dot. And Jacks Francisco just phenomenal in goal again with 16 saves. So Florida Tech looks good.

So the next game that I was able to watch, I kind of was watching on the side as I was watching the pace game as well. That was Frostburg at Malloy. Malloy being number 15. And the real question we had can Frostburg repeat itself for the third time and beat another top 20 team? The answer to that was no, which is tough to do. To beat three in a row like that, that's a tall order. They lost 11-7. They fall to 6-4. Malloy State goes to 6-2. Malloy really controlled this game. But it was interesting as I was trying to watch it. Malloy went up 4-0 after one, and it was 6-3 at half. But as I was trying to watch the game and watching two games at once on my command center, Frostburg seemed to have more possession time from what I could tell. And it started to allow them to crawl back. Because look, they were down 4-0. They even up 6-3. But then on the in the third quarter, Malloy just broke it open and they outscored Frostburg 4-1 to make it 10-6 after 3. Now you know Malloy, right? They controlled it after that. And one of the reasons, the main reasons, was their face-off guy, Brandon Pazienza. He went 16 of 21. Ooh. So when you can control that.

It's face-off, it's specialty play. Faceoff. Malloy had 16 to Frostburg's six. Saves. Malloy had 18. John Basil had 18 saves to Frostburg's eight. That's a huge difference right there. That seems like it's gonna be. So hats off to them. Great game. For Frostburg, Keenan Green had three goals. Sean Mulaneau uh had two goals, one assist. Henry Sykes had a goal and two assists. And Ryder Walter on defense had four ground balls and five cost turnovers. Some really big defensive play. Unfortunately, in a in a losing losing effort. For Malloy, Noah Hammond, the transfer from Chestnut Hill, four goals, three assists. It's a game. Justin Paulis, Brian Green, and Jaden Simic had a goal and an assist apiece. Tommy Corcoran had two goals and two assists. And like I said, John Basil, 72%, seven goals against, 18 saves. Just crazy.

I thought this was going to be a really good game because I think both of them kind of matched up. It was everything I thought it would be and more. It was a really, really good game. St. Mike's pulls this one out, hangs on, hangs on. I'm going to say hangs on. And won 11-10. They hung on because at the end of the game, Galinchenski made some big saves at the end of the game that helped St. Mike's hold on. We'll get into that. But Southern New Hampshire used a really fast and dominant first half to make St. Mike's like antsy. The Purple Knights scored first on a nice Chris Davis goal. Sean Dwyer tied it up for the penman. Then our man, Lasa Volquardson, gave the penmen a 2-1 lead. Patrick Roy buried a biscuit for the penmen, and they led 3-2 after one. Pretty good first quarter.

They're playing faster, they're playing harder. Third quarter.

Southern New Hampshire had some really costly turnovers, and it cost them big time. The Purple Knights were able to capitalize. David, Davis and Verno scored along with Owen Balfour, and the Purple Knights were chipping into that lead, Kev, bringing the Knights to within one goal. Kyle Beckett buried one for Southern New Hampshire, but the Knights closed the quarter out with goals by Murphy, Peraza, and Owen Balfour. And the Purple Knights led 10-8 after three. What a turnaround. It was quite the turnover. It was just a really good game back and forth. And just like again, a couple of turnovers in that third quarter led to three goals real quick for St. Mike's. And like I said, Galinchenski made some nice stops at opportune times, Kev, that really kept St. Mike's because Southern New Hampshire was still able to move the ball and get shots off and get shots off and get shots off. But you know what? Even though they were getting shots off in that fourth quarter, they just couldn't find the back of the net. They had their opportunities, and uh St. Mike's comes back but holds on for 11-10. Exciting, exciting any ten game.

But and that's because typically St. Mike's has struck last. Last year, they had great out of conference and then they struggled in conference. Southern New Hampshire's been playing so well. St. Mike's has played very well out of conference again this year. St. Mike showed that they're in it for the NE-10 conference. You know what I'm saying? Like they're like, no, no, no. We're not backing down. We're winning this game. You saw the the team after they won the game, how excited they were. It was just, it was a phenomenal game. I I would have been freezing my took us off. Oh, yeah, definitely. But uh there, what an exciting game for that for that team. It was great. Oh, definitely, 100%. It was a really fun and fun game to watch.

All right. I am flying solo tonight. Danny had some commitments he couldn't get out of, but we move on. Everyone will have to deal with just me, including our guests, coming on right now. This is a player spotlight, but it's really a player's spotlight afterward. You know how in books they have afterwards to explain something that happened in the book since it was written? Well, this player finished his college career in 2022 at Limestone after his getting his MBA there, in which he was named SAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2022. But he was much more accomplished than that, playing for the English team and coaching at Limestone. And now he has a new gig. So I we Danny and I, even though he's not here tonight, thought it'd be great to catch up to him. So let's just bring him in. Will Baxter, former player at Limestone. We'll figure out what he's doing later. Hey Will, how are you doing?

No, this is awesome. And it was great to talk to you quickly about this. I really appreciate you appreciate you reaching out. I think you have a really unique story. Let me just start off. It's kind of funny. I always assumed you got your undergrad at limestone. You know, and maybe it's just the ugly American and me. I figured you came over to learn lacrosse. Come to find out, you know, you played in the World Cup on the on the English team in Israel. So you were an accomplished player even before getting to Limestone. So tell us how you ended up after doing all that and being an accomplished player for the England team getting to limestone.

Yeah, it was quite a um quite a, as you say, unique story. So I grew up playing lacrosse in England, started at the age of six, and then I studied Yeah, I was young. My older brother played, so I was around lacrosse from the age of three. I was not a big kid, I was not an athletic kid, so I thought I'd go in goal because I don't know why. I thought the pads were really cool, I thought the sticks were cool, and this would have been around 2002 I started playing. Um, and yeah, went through the whole England career here. So trialed for the men's senior team when I was 16, wasn't successful, which is understandable. And then two years later went back, trialed as an 18-year-old, and then got on the European squad at the age of 19, ahead of the 2016 Euros. I was probably third goalie in the depth chart at that point, worked really hard that year, and then the next sort of year I ended up starting in the European Championship final, which was at 20 years old, which for me was a huge achievement. And then from then on went and played in Israel in 2018, which was a that really humbled me a lot. I went from the Europeans where I think my save percentage was 75%. As a 20-year-old, I thought I was, I thought I was it. And then um You were you were the man. Yeah, and then went to Israel and got humbled very quickly playing against USA, Canada, Hodascroney, Puerto Rico, Japan, Australia. I think my save percentage was probably about 45%. I was I physically and mentally struggled a lot and wasn't ready, but the only way to prepare for a World Games at that level is to play in a World Games. So this was around yeah, 2018. Finished my undergrad in England, started my master's, and that's where I met a guy called Rodney Felder, who was a limestone alumni. He came over to uh England and we were on the same postgrad course. I looked to go to the States years earlier, but it never materialized. I didn't think I was mature enough or emotionally ready for it. Um did everything here, and then COVID hit. I was working, I hated it, and just woke up one night and thought, this, I I don't wanna, I don't want to let my lacrosse career end like this. I need to improve um my skills, I need to develop, and started speaking to some of my England teammates that have played in the States with a guy called Alex Russell, who was at LIU Post um for years before it went D1. So we got both experiences. And then a guy called Tim Collins was at Mount Olive as well. I think he did five years there. So I started speaking to them a little bit, and then was speaking to my friend Rodney, and who is good friends with Kevin Reesman, and said, um, if you're sending out some emails, send one to Limestone that they might need a goalie. And I was 24 years old. My highlight video was me at 22 years old in the World Games against Canada. Um so my highlight video looked good, and then what they got was not that person. But um, so yeah, I sent an email out on my highlight tape to a couple of D2 schools, and the only school that got back to me and within the hour as well was Limestone. So JV Clark reached out and um asked for a phone call, and then that's sort of how it started. And I haven't looked back, it was the best thing for me. It really improved my game, it made me a more emotionally mature, goalie, made me a uh I like to say a better human being and made me value this sport a lot more than I probably did previously.

Yeah, so let me ask you this. Danny and I always talk about how great D2 is and just like other divisions, right, there's there's the highs and the lows in the teams. You played in the SAC and you I I'm just curious from your play uh with the England team, let's count out Israel, which was probably the highest level you were at when you played in the World Cup there against that that level of talent. How would you compare D two to like what you play in England uh when you were growing not in growing up but when you're in college um what do you think of of D two and the competition and and just I'm curious of that. And then maybe even playing in the England team in Europe. Like what's the is there a it can you compare? Is it just a different different type of uh game?

It's a it is a different game. There's a few comparisons that can make um overall if you play for the English national team I think you have the skill level to play Division II lacrosse if sure because of most most of our guys that have gone to college in the States have played at decent standards that have played for the national team. The main major difference is the intensity level the fitness level and like the English national team the ages range from 18 to 38. So like we've got wow but yeah my my brother in the last worlds was probably 35 with three kids um full time job can't commit the same amount of hours to practice as a college lacrosse player can do. Right. The rosters are a lot smaller as well so it is a different game like what I remember especially under story at limestone transition riding and clearing was our big thing was our big non-negotiable and playing at a high intensity but we had the roster size to be able to do that. Whereas in England a World Games roster is now 22 players our club system is 15 players max so wow yeah guys have to be able to play two way um face off guys have to be able to defend stay on the field the whole time pretty much yeah um it you and we play on grass fields in the middle of winter it's muddy it's uh it's funny seeing the American kids come over and see the fields like what is going on here it's like it's a it's a different game it's yeah completely different um it's much slower we play 20 minute quarters as well rolling clock um there's no shot clock so as you can imagine it's a lot more simple um teams don't really ride that hard most people clear the ball quite slowly it's the classic goal they'll walk it up right and just wait for the opportunity and yeah it's a much slower game domestically but the skill level is there it's just the players haven't been exposed to that high intensity so it's but D2 is head and shoulders above the standard I'm playing over here.

Well you gave a great rundown of that I really appreciate that what has it been like playing for the English national team I it's gotta be just first of all a a huge honor that you're able to do that and play at that level and then like you said you got humbled in the in the World Cup in Israel but what what's that what's that journey been like has that been like you talk about being mature enough to finally go to the United States and play it took you till you're 24 you may have been more mature but that you were in the middle of COVID before that.

So like but how has that helped you not only from a lacrosse perspective but maybe from just a growth perspective from you personally um it's it's been a really wild journey like I've been involved in England for the last 10 years now so got my call up in 2015 so it's coming up to 11 years it's all self-funded there's hardly any sponsorship if we want to play for our country we have to pay ourselves we have to pay for practices we have to play pay for our equipment we have to pay for tournaments and I'm fortunate enough that my parents help fund that or have helped fund that in the past um not everyone has that privilege so it's very tough that the team we take isn't necessarily the best team we have available it's the best team who can afford it and have the time to put into it that's available. So it's a very amateur team even though we are pet playing at these high standards it's quite it is difficult. I mean it's changed a bit now with the introduction of sixes in the Olympics there's a lot more funding there's a lot more support available but even then we still have to pay a smaller amount but we do have to pay it has to be paid by someone um yeah it it's difficult and sort of maturing to that is just realizing that's what it's like you know I'm not that kid anymore that is trying to balance the social life with family life with school work it's I purposely picked jobs in lacrosse that allow me to be able to play for my country and help towards the Olympic uh dream granted I could be earning a lot more money in other fields but at this point in my life I just want to play in the Olympics play for England in the next World Cup I just want to take each opportunity I can get before my career's over like it's a small window you get as an athlete and leaving limestone was really tough having that level of support having those teammates having a level of coaching to then come to England where the standards are not as great. It's a slower game there's less support and you are like you break a stick you have to pay for your own stickers at limestone you broke a stick you got a stick the same day so it's uh it's just realizing what is important to you in life at this point and time management like my social life is not great anymore um which I'm completely fine with but it's just maturing to the fact that I'm trying to achieve a goal there's less distractions now I'm getting old and boring but I just want to take what I can get and leave uh leave Mulacross career behind when I'm happy with it you know like if I hadn't have gone to the States and played at limestone I wouldn't have been happy with Mullacross Korea if I don't get to the Olympics or we don't qualify I'd have another crack at it I'd keep going but I just want to get to a point where I could say I've done all I can I've enjoyed the journey I need to uh focus on the rest of my life at this point. So it's uh yeah realizing that it's a special thing but it's going to be over before you know it.

Yeah I love that you say you're getting old but trust me you're very young. So you have the time you have the time to to I always tell my kids you should pick something that you enjoy doing so it doesn't become like work that your work can be something you really enjoy and and you're doing that right now. Whether that changes in the future I mean that that's something that you always have to balance right as you try to look for you know making money or whatever. But that is just awesome I was gonna ask you what it was like to coach at limestone but maybe I'll just make it broader because I think you coached after you finished limestone you coached in England for a while then you went back to limestone and you're coaching again.

So walk me through kind of your coaching journey versus your playing journey and where you are now yeah so I started coaching bits when I was a bit younger um specifically goalie coaching you know the game of lacrosse was what I know now compared to then despite playing for my country for three years I knew nothing about the game of lacrosse I knew how to save a ball that was about it so I started off being a goalie coach I was helping out the England U-20s team and this is probably what sparked my inspiration for coaching I was fired without being told despite I was the starting goalie for England I was helping the next generation and was not told that I my services weren't required my goalie coach messaged me to say I've just been asked to do this job why I was like I don't know and never got an answer probably didn't like me that was probably it so that sort of fueled my coaching career and when I coached lacrosse it doesn't feel like a job it's quite nice you get everything like you still get the highs the lows it's a lot more laid back at times but it's also quite intense as well so it is like to me it is like playing um so I coached that team and then my first job was a men's lacrosse coach at a university in England and that's when I realized I needed to get to the States so I probably quit that job a month before leaving for limestone and then when I went to limestone I started being much more receptive to the game of lacrosse and sort of coaching styles and because with JB Clark that first year that man is a very experienced coach and we had Chris Fisher along with him and Kevin Reesman as well relatively sort of new not new to his coaching career but like getting towards um where he got to in the end like he was still growing at that point and it was great to see his um journey as a coach as well like just because he was probably mainly a face wealth coach that year and then each year got more responsibility he did an amazing job I loved working with him his intensity and love for the program was incredible and so working under these great coaches taught me so much more about the game and then when Coach Storia came in it was a completely different game to what Coach Clark had been through. So I was learning different styles different methods of play and sort of how different people run things but still how they do the same also the same things as well so I started to pick up consistencies of certain aspects of the game and sort of differences between different coaching styles and then came back to England started coaching girls lacrosse at schools because women's lacrosse is much more popular in England the better paid jobs are in women's coaching so um interesting that was that was all I had because we play it all the private schools play it here so there's probably five to one women's to men's players so in order to earn a living in England you have to coach women's lacrosse so that's why I went down that route and went into that very ignorantly didn't know anything about women's lacrosse but sort of went into it with a men's mentality and adapted from there and then got uh coach storia reached out saying we need another grad assistant they had I think 11 goalies at this point too much too many for coach Malone to deal with so I bit his hand off at the opportunity and got to go back and obviously I was good friends with Kendall who was then the D coordinator got to work with Coach Reespan Coach Storia Coach Malone again and then Pierce Houlihan one of my teammates was the other grad assistant so it was it was great. I loved hanging out with him in the office every day and I learned so much it was I was just like a big sponge just sitting there and listening to all these ideas and then from there was uh coach for the Wales women's national team as well still coach a bit of school across and now I am working at Nottingham Trent University. So I'm assistant coach of the men's team and now head coach of the women's team so um there's two of us that coach both teams so we sort of split our responsibilities and help each other out. Um the other coach is a guy called Sam Patterson he's my England head coach as well so it's uh great working with him learning from him and it's someone I played for England with as well so it's nice working with someone that you've got a good relationship with and have worked with for many years before actually working together.

That's interesting because you're a coach with your head coach that when you are playing for the national team it's a different dynamic.

Yeah it's great it it is strange. Um we put it's England lacrosse well lacrosse is a small community in general but England lacrosse is even smaller. So like my head coach now coached me when I was 12 I played with him from the age of 19 to 22 then he's my boss and my England head coach now and it's it's a bit more of a more mature relationship with it like most of what we do at Nottingham Trent when we're having meetings about the team we always talk about England and he was uh he also selected me to be captain as well which was a great honour so we've got a good working relationship with it um it's something where you can speak every day about things and we can properly discuss it until it when it gets to a practice weekend and he values my opinion as well as a player which is great um so I'm sort of I would be the player's voice on things and say we like this we don't like this and he respects that as well we may go back and forth but yeah it's uh it's a great relationship to have and it's a really good opportunity to have as well it's unique as I say as you say yeah that's really unique that is really cool. Now you and I were talking about this you know Division two division three division one NCAA players they have a certain amount of years of eligibility right so that usually ends it during COVID it was you could get a fifth year that was automatically given to you blah blah blah blah blah it's tough to get beyond that nowadays uh but you have a bunch of former NCAA players playing at at Nanan M Trent is that correct yes we've got um quite a good link with some schools in the States and quite a good uh network of recruiting postgrad Americans so I think just from D2 we've like last year we had seven D2 players we've got two or three this year but historically we've had quite a good amount of St. A's kids Rollins kids um a lot of schools in Florida Tampa kids and more recently limestone kids as well so it's uh it's quite it's a really unique experience to get over to England because there's no eligibility restrictions so you've finished your four or five years playing at college in the States you can come over and continue playing here it's a year program as opposed to two years as it is in the States you can travel around Europe and it's also a fraction of the cost as well I think base fee before salary is probably about 22 uh for scholarship sorry probably about $22,000 so it is a unique opportunity to be able to continue playing lacrosse get your master's degree and have a bit of fun travel Europe before you enter the corporate world and have to put on a shirt and tie for the rest of your life so what type of master's degrees would you say are the I'm sure you have a whole bunch of them there but like are there certain ones that the players that like is it MBA is what what are what's the equivalent? So our business school is probably our most popular our business school is internationally acclaimed as well it's probably in the top 10 15 in the country we have a lot of our postgrad Americans will study business finance business management um international business but on top of that as well we've also got a great sports science program um we have great psychology programs a sports psychology program as well and we also have a probably a bit different for the American students than the English but we have a great art school as well so like graphic design textiles wow illustration that sort of that sort of thing but with our Americans our business school is probably our biggest seller and our most heavily populated courses we have over 150 master's courses available as well it's a huge school we have 35000 students so we have a lot of opportunities to uh to look through I mean when I went to limestone I had the choice of two masters it was the MBA and healthcare administration and I think only the MBA offered me a visa so I was pretty set on doing that one whereas here we've got so many opportunities so many options and you can apply for multiple courses free of charge as well and then you will get an offer back and you can make your decision from there as well that is amazing.

So yeah well I'll tell you well we tell this to people all the time Danny and me Danny and I never played the sport or ever coached it. And yet we have this podcast and we're just two knuckleheads talking about D2 lacrosse but that sounds like an amazing opportunity. Like I told you our daughter right now is is studying in Oxford for her last semester of college and absolutely loves it. We fell in love with the area we would love to have traveled more of course we went to London first and then we went up to Oxford but we would love to get to other places just because it's so beautiful when you get out of the city there's so much more to the country to see it's such a a great experience beyond just the education because the education when I talk to my daughter it's so different from what it is in the U.S. It gives you a totally different perspective and even I I think it's a it's even some ways you can get burnt out on how you study or play lacrosse in the US and then you get you get to be refreshed when you do something like at at Nottingham Trent.

Yeah and like the opportunity to travel is ridiculous. So it's an hour and a half on the train to London if you want to get up to Edinburgh it's three hours on the train Manchester's an hour and a half and like we have a lot of countryside in England as well so if you're interested in hiking walking um getting out there like Jack Beachlee who was uh LSM at limestone is currently here he is obsessed with the countryside mainly the stone walls we see so every time we drive to because he plays for my club team so every time we drive to Manchester he's obsessed with the stone walls um but then again there's an airport in the city as well so like Dublin is a 30 minute flight Barcelona's a two hour flight Amsterdam's an hour flight and we purposely don't practice on the weekends so our athletes can go away go traveling and then come back on Monday so hopefully refreshed and just get to experience a bit of life it's it's a unique opportunity and you don't get many options to or many opportunities in life to travel that much abroad especially being based in America you don't need to leave the United States because you've got everything there but in Europe we have to travel to get some sun at times travel to the beach travel to ski um one of our players has gone skiing about four times this year he loves it and hilarious it's a two hour flight so there's a lot there's so much opportunity to get out and uh broaden your horizon as well well you've sold me like you're recruiting uh recording here right now so if players are interested is there a way to get in touch with you or in in touch with the school how do they go about doing that? Absolutely so if probably on Instagram uh NTU men's lacrosse uh drop a DM in there and one of the coaches will get back to you or if you want a bit more of a talk about it first also my email as well so my email is william.baxter at ntu.ac dot uk and like our program is probably the last 10 years has been a very strong program program in the UK we've won the national championship four times we won it three years in a row uh unfortunately haven't won it this year but we had a big rebuild year and we're going again next year but yeah we strive to win national championships every year and we put that in place from day one and recruit a team to win national championships. So we've as I probably told you before we started recording we've got a good number of D2 players coming next year as well probably about four from the sack or five from the sack a couple from Beach Bell and a couple from Sunshine State as well as some D1 players in there as well for next year. So we heavily recruit from the states and our school supports us in what we do because of the national championships we've won. So we take it very seriously the lacrosse but we also understand that people have lives and want to have a bit of fun while they're over here for a year.

So Will you mentioned that you didn't win it this year. I don't think we explained this you explained this to me earlier. What is your lacrosse season Over there in the university?

So we run completely polar opposite to the States. Um, it is a winter sport in England. So our season starts in October, and then we run until the end of March, pretty much. Um, so after March until September, when the Masters finishes, a lot of the guys and girls just travel, they go home, they go see fruit, they just are able to really enjoy the experience. But yeah, we start the season much earlier. Um, so all of our athletes arrive in September. We will have a full preseason before class starts, and then once class starts, the season starts not long after. We obviously have a break at Christmas where the athletes go home for about four weeks, it is, and then back again in January to start the championship run. So it's a it's a really, really different experience to the NCA, but it is really cool as well. And if you're unsure what you want to do before entering the corporate world, it's a great opportunity to get a master's at a fraction of the cost and also in half the time as well.

So I'm trying my best to send players over there and then in return trying to bring some post grads over here to keep our leagues very competitive.
