SPEAKER_02Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of Indecrease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's Lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stentrum, and with me as always is the commander-in-chief of D2 Lacrosse, Danny Moran. Hey Danny.
SPEAKER_03It's time. The train's rolling, Kevin.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, it is. Before we get into all that, though, I've got a little cleanup from last episode. Actually, before we even start that, I just want to say it's one thing. We've we've already recorded our coach's spotlight with Coach Greg Peradine of uh of Lenore. Great interview. He was a great guy. Very gracious to come on with us. We inter we did that the same day we did his his defensive player, Victor Powell. So it's a little bit you know time late, but we really appreciate him come on. But our player spotlight this week, I am gonna I'm saying right now, this is gonna be a fairly long episode. That interview went pretty long, but if there's one thing anyone listening to this podcast should do, is skip everything else and go to that interview first.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Ryan was an amazing guest, amazing, amazing story, and just one worth listening.
SPEAKER_02And the perseverance is it's an amazing story. So you can skip listening to Danny and me about weekend review and games to watch, and come back to that later. Go to that one first. But with that said, Danny, we do have a few things to clean up from last episode. We got some input from listeners correcting me in a few mistakes I made last week. So let's go through that. First of all, it's not Sacred Heart that's going in D2, they're a D1 program. It's Holy Family that's joining the CACC next year. And I can't believe a guy who went to Holy Cross messed up those names. So Holy Family's coming in, huh? Yeah, Holy Family's coming in, but also one of our listeners pointed out that I missed a few other teams joining D2. They're not coming in next year, they're coming in the 2024-2025 season. Emory and Henry in the SAC. Nova Southeastern down in Florida. I know Nova. I assume they're gonna go with Sunshine State because that's the conference they're in. And then Northwood is joining the GMAC in 2024-2025. Okay, all right. Growing, growing, and growing. Growing, growing. So a big shout out to Nick Mann and JJ Fox for their input and making sure that we are correct on this podcast, or I am correct.
Week in Review
SPEAKER_02Thank you. Yeah, but like you said, Danny, the train's rolling, and we had our first week of games. And last year, it was punctuated, I think, by some real upsets and some state win statement wins to begin the season. Not so much this year, in my opinion. I think what was revealed this week, this past week, is that the preseason top 10 teams showed why they deserve those rankings.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the top tens did very, very well this week.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they I mean, some of the teams that they ran up against gave them a run for a while, but in the end, they that those teams were just so strong. So you ready to get into it? Yeah, man. Let's rock. All right. Well, let's talk the game that started off the season. Emery Riddle against Flagler.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, them two boys in Florida, they get after it. You know, Coach Wims and and uh Coach Duncan and Coach Duncan getting after it today. You know that not a bad game. A little sloppy, a little sloppy in the beginning, you know, some unforced turnovers by both teams, both squads. But you know what? By the end, like by by the third quarter, you could see they were settling in, they were doing some things, then they started playing. They started playing, they started getting into it.
SPEAKER_02That's exactly the notes I had, Danny. I had like the first quarter was like a track beat. They were up and down. Emmy Riddle was playing a lot of transition, playing fast. So was Flagler. It was 5'2, Emmy Riddle after one. I thought, was this gonna be like a 20-goal game? No, like you said, they settled in after that. They settled in.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like I said, just a little sloppy in the beginning. But you know what? First game, you know, beginning lacrosse is you know kind of sloppy sometimes, you know, until you get your until you sharpen your irons and all of that kind of stuff. But you know what? Flackler's a pretty athletic team, you know. They, you know, they look they're a pretty good team. I these are two young programs, you know, and they're both going trending upwards. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, I'll tell you how close. I mean, you know, it's five two, but at half it was six five. After three, it was nine-eight. And then Emory Riddle finally pulled away. It's like, okay, it's it's they're up by two goals with about 950 left, maybe tough to come back. It was 10-8. Flagler gets a goal on man up to bring it to 10-9. And then then Emory Riddle kind of came back. But guess what? Flagler scores with 23 seconds left to make it a one-goal game, 11-10.
SPEAKER_03It started to get a little chippy too. There's some penalties at the end.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. And then then Flagler wins the face-off. I'm like, here you go. But uh after the ball is bouncing around, they they were able to they were able to call timeout, but by that time it was only four seconds left. Tom Tom had a shot that just goes high at the buzzer. I mean, it was a good game. Good game to end. 11 11-10 final. I think I said it was gonna be a one-goal game last night.
SPEAKER_03You nailed it, my friend. You nailed it.
SPEAKER_02Your prolific podcast partner nailed the game. Um I'm hanging up my predictions for the rest of the season. That was the last one I'm making.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that was a good game, though. And then uh, and that started off our 2023 season in Division II, Kev. And you know what? What a better way to start. Two Florida teams in the south. Looked nice. Place was crowded. Um, you know, the cheering was going on, everybody was in shorts, the palm trees were flowing in the background.
SPEAKER_02It was freezing up here in Northern Virginia.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm in sweatshirts and hoodies, right? That was a good game.
SPEAKER_02Okay, all right, so let's move on. Let's talk Leno Ryan Merryville. I I've got one word for this, and really it's domination.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know, LR is good, man. Axelsen had four and one, Moffat had three and two, and uh Riley C with three and two, man. Get this.
SPEAKER_02That was my note. Riley say from Loyola transfer, yeah, and then midfielder. Yeah, Lane Herrick. It's either Herrich or Herrick. I I apologize from Seton Hill with two goals, and their goalie Nolan Hoffman, who's the Colorado Mesa transfer, he had 13 nine out of 13 saves for a 69 save percentage. Good afternoon. Just like we talked about, not only do they have studs returning, they filled holes, and those people, those guys made their presence known.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that and that defense showed up big time, you know. They only they only allowed four goals all game. So yeah, you know, there's you know, number of top five team doing business like they should. Exactly, exactly.
SPEAKER_02How about uh you indie lake erie?
SPEAKER_03Undy Lake Erie, uh, you windy big time. Moyer and Oyer and Billig, you know, carrying the load for those guys. 2110, Kev. That's a big, that's an 11 11 points.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but here's here's an interesting thing. I watched that game. It was one of the three games at the same time I was watching on my command central that I posted on Instagram. The storm came within two goals with 214 left in the first half. I'm like, here they come, looks good. 7-5. It was 7-5 that time, but you indie scores with 39 seconds left to make it 8-5, and then they score again with a beautiful dodge and no slide coming to to take over with three seconds left. So now they they turn it from 7-5 to 9-5 in basically 39 seconds, and that was all she wrote.
SPEAKER_03You know, Undy's a top 10, top five team NCAA, you know, caliber team, Kev. But you know what the real good thing about that game was? My buddy Pat Conlin, his son Gavin got to see some time between the pipes for the storm in Lake Erie. So that's his first time seeing some action, and I'm proud of him. He's a good kid, and his dad was a great ball player, man. His dad could play some hoops now. So they're from upstate New York, and Gavin's uh out there in Lake Erie, and he got some time between the pipes in that game. So I'm happy for him.
SPEAKER_02Excellent. That's great. Okay, here's the game we were waiting for is a top 20 matchup, Florida Tech Tampa.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, a little closer than I thought it was gonna be, Kev.
SPEAKER_02So Tampa and my this is what I wrote from my notes. Tampa does what they always do. It was close, but in the end, they shut the door on the opposing team.
SPEAKER_03Well, Kukowski and McAnani with two apiece, and my man Blake Umer with 19 saves, sometime state conference defensive player of the week. I DM'd him over the weekend, said, Hey, good job, Kate. I see you starting off right where you left off last year. He was like, Thanks, Dan, I appreciate it. So, you know, Blake is an unbelievable goalie, man, goalie of the year. So if you're gonna beat Tampa, you have to beat Umer. And that's a that's a that's a tall.
SPEAKER_02And I'll tell you what, here's the other thing about him. I watched that game and he made saves look easy. Like there, you know, he had some easy saves to make, but at the same time, it's like oh, I did not know he had that many saves. That's good, man. That's how um nonchalant it was making it look nonchalantly. I think he was smoking a cigarette back there, too, at the same time. Yeah, but uh he's good. But it was a great, it was a good game though, because it was back-to-back punches and jabs in the second quarter, you know. It was close, and and I will tell you, Florida Tech's defense. I told you I was worried about their defense. Well, they played pretty damn well. You hold Tampa to only 13 goals.
SPEAKER_03Yes, exactly. I think Florida Tech played well, Cap. I think they played well in the game. Well, look at this.
SPEAKER_02It was they outshot him, and it was 9-7 after three, Danny. This wasn't it, just they shut him down in the in the fourth quarter, and I'll tell you how I think it happened. Right at the beginning, Tampa opens it up to the three goal advantage, beginning of the fourth, with a trick, quick transition goal starting with a pass from Blake Omer. And it was boom, boom, boom. I was like four passes, you know, 20 yards each, and all of a sudden it was in the goal. Well, then they followed it up a minute later with another goal. So now it's a four-point difference, and I think that was what took the wind out of the Panthers' sails.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know what? They they outground balled in Florida Tech. They had less turnovers, they converted two out of seven on their man-ups, and and Tampa didn't convert any of their man-ups. So you know what? Florida Tech played well, you know. They just ran into a steamroller in Blake Ulmer back there in golf.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yep. Florida Tech will be fun to watch. They're gonna be a good team this year. They're a good squad. They're good squad. They they deserved uh USILA coaches poll ranking and your ranking. I did not have them in there, and now I know why I'm an idiot. And uh you're not an idiot. You're not an idiot. Just quickly, let's let's I gotta talk Florida Southern again. So they played Alabama Huntsville Friday, Montevallo on Sunday, and put up 23. Put up 23 on Montevalo. 37 goals total between the two, 14-4 uh over uh Uah. It was 10-0 at half with that one, and then like you said, it was 23-4 against Monte Valo.
SPEAKER_03And now we know who they threw out at face-off. We we didn't know, we didn't know, we had no idea. Freshman, a freshman, Jacob Chris, and he went 22 for 43.
SPEAKER_02He was he was like 60 percent, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So and then of course Sean Nolan, you know, that man and Jay Minor, those two guys just ball out for those guys all the time. Yeah, five and one for Sean, and and three and two for Jay Minor. So Florida Southern, good squad, Kev. Talked about them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we'll talk about I've got them lined up for the uh games to watch this weekend. We'll get into that. But uh we'll keep an eye on that freshman face-off kid, too. Keep an eye on him, yeah, exactly. Because he's got a big, big game against Anderson coming up. That is gonna be a battle for him in the face-off.
SPEAKER_03Yes, it is 100%. He's gonna learn, he's gonna learn the NCAA game pretty quick next week.
SPEAKER_02So I gotta talk about this game really quickly, not by the final score, but it was Mars Hill Belmont Abbey. Belmont Abbey won 10-5 in the end, but I was watching this game, Danny. It was only one zip after the first quarter with Belmont Abbey scoring the only goal. At half, it was three to two Belmont Abbey. So Mars Hill was hanging with them, hanging with them, hanging with them. They were holding their own. I think if they could reduce some of those in the first half, I saw, you know, they had a lot more turnovers than Belmont Abbey. Belmont Abbey, like I talked about in the preview, their defense was really good. Of course, they had Sullivan in goal, he played great, but they were trying to find their offense, trying to get their legs underneath them with that. The difference in this game, I think, was in man up. Belmont Abbey went four or five, where Mars Hill went one of six.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's huge. That's the difference right there.
SPEAKER_02Yep, but I'll tell you what, Mars Hill goalie, Steven Smith. He had 20 saves on the day, Danny. It's a good day. Good day, 66% save percentage. So it was a really interesting game to watch because it it kind of unfolded like we talked about the two teams. Mars Hill is on the upswing, they played better than they did last year. What I saw from last year, and Belmont Abbey, like I talked with Coach Barrett. It's their offense that needs to find their identity, and they had to find it really in the second half against Mars Hill.
SPEAKER_03Well, you know, Joe Turner's a good coach at Mars Hill. He's gonna get them boys at least playing competitive. We we spoke about we spoke to Coach Turner and we spoke about you and I about where Mars Hill is and where they have to be. And we we think it's a three or four year exactly where where where he could be. So now Coach Turner's in year two. He's got his boys in there, um, playing competitive, you know, and Belmont Abbey is a good squad, Kev. Year in and year out.
SPEAKER_02Yep, yep. And they showed, I think they showed it with their perseverance throughout that whole game because they were giving Mars Hill hope, and they just kept on hanging in there, and then they broke it open in the second half.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, okay, I've got one more game on my list, and that is Mount Olive against Lander. Two good programs. Mount Olive with our new head coach Dylan Price and Lander coming in. One of those teams that I had on the bubble coming in and out of number 20 out of the peach belt. Lander takes the win 11-7 was the final. It was a close game throughout. The real difference was in two quarters, first and second quarter. Lander outscored Mount Olive four to two in both those quarters, and that really was the difference. Yep, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Lander's a good squad, Kev. You know, they're they're you know, they're a competitive squad, and Mount Olive, the new coach, you know, they're gonna have a few you know wrinkles, I'm sure, that they're gonna have to straighten out. And they better straighten it out quick because they got Catawba next week with Coach Murphy.
SPEAKER_02So, yeah, yeah, which is another game on my list, without a doubt. So, um, a few shout-outs, Kyle uh Descino. I probably butchered his last name. I apologize for that. He had six goals for lander. That's a good deck. That's the difference there, too. They're goalie Rice Peterson or Reese Peterson with 21 saves, 73 percent. That was the difference, Danny. That was the difference because Mount Olive dominated in many of the stats, just like you saw Florida Tech do. Right. They had ground balls, clears, face-offs. They won those, but in the end, that save percentage is what got Lander over the and obviously some good scoring from guys like uh Kyle that brought him over there. So really good game to watch, really close. The the score 11-7 didn't really tell you how close it was. You had to watch the game. Good job, Lander.
SPEAKER_03Getting it done, boys.
Coach Paradine of LR
SPEAKER_02All right, after that recap of the games, let's move on. Tonight we get to talk to a coach that always seems to have his team in the top five in the country, which is no easy feat when you are playing in the sack conference. So let's just welcome him in, Coach Greg Peradine, head coach of the Norrine Bears.
SPEAKER_00Hey coach, how you guys doing? Thanks for having me on. I was I was I was waiting for the invite, I was getting a complex. I was like, I knew it. I knew you were. So I'm glad I'm glad I'm finally on.
SPEAKER_02No, you know, it's it's you know, it's our producer. Oh, that's me.
SPEAKER_03I apologize and that crack research team of ours. Yeah, that we'll they're so well paid. But you know what, coach? Um, it's great to have you on. You're an unbelievable coach, what you've been able to do at Lenore Ryan after the last bunch of years. It's just been amazing. Uh, my first time at Lenore Ryan was 2010. My oldest son was at St. Leo. We went up, but yeah, uh, we came down. I'm from Long Island, just like you, not too far away from. Yeah, and uh that that that St. Leo team was actually pretty good that year. They actually won the uh Sunshine State Conference, they had a couple All Americans on that team that year. But that was my first time between the bricks, coach. I know all about being between the bricks and had a couple of friends that played football at Lenore Ryan back in the day. Back in the day, and uh they were heck of a they were a heck of a heck of players too, man.
SPEAKER_00There were some really good football players, but some guys, you know, yeah, two guys in the NFL right now and doing really well.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Lenore Ryan as a as a whole coach, really the sports program there is like pretty much second to none in all the sports in there. What do you think?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, our our athletic director and our president, I mean, they you know, they they give the programs the support they need. I think that's a big reason why we've been successful. I mean, they you know, they redid the stadium. Um, you know, you guys hopefully get down to a game and see this this year. Uh Wingate comes to us, but um, it's a $18 million renovation they did for the stadium. It's beautiful. You know, they redid our weight room, we got brand new locker rooms. So it's it they they invest in the sports and they want to see us compete at the highest level.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so going on that coach, we've talked to several coaches, as you know, because we bring you in late and you're giving me grief for that. But we've talked to several coaches that have started their programs, you know, started the programs. You have done the same thing since its inception back in you were hired in 2009, like you said, your first season was 2010 playing. What was that like? What's that journey been like? And how what has it been like to see the the growth and success since 2009 in your program?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's been it was interesting. When I when I took the when I started the program, you know, I took it with the belief that we could be successful. Um, you know, they they had all the infrastructure in place. Hickory is a great town, you know, it's it I knew I could recruit there. You know, I knew the kind of the landscape of Division II at the time. And when I took the program, I was like, I, you know, I think I can build something here. And the first year we just we just try to be competitive, you know, that was it. Just compete. You know, the second year was like, okay, let's compete and try to close the gap between Katawin, Wingate, some of Mars Hill at the time. Then the third year, those those kids that started the program, that was like, okay, let's start to beat those guys.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_00We started to beat a couple of those teams. And then when those guys were seniors, you know, we made it to the conference championship game. We lost the Queens that year. Um, and and that that was kind of the building process, you know, and then and then it started to we had great kids who recruited great kids. Um, and then the turning point was that 2018 season, really, when when we made it to the uh semifinals that year. And yeah, I think that really kind of springboarded us, you know. We finally we we beat limestone that year for the first time, which was huge.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um that was that was sort of the springboard um to to what to what it is now. And and I think we've kind of built some momentum and built the name for ourselves. And you know we're getting really just great quality kids who can play at the division one level. And that's what it takes to compete at the top level. You got to get division one kids.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And there are only so many kids that can play division one.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00So you know we we got to get those guys who filter down and could be on a division one roster anywhere.
SPEAKER_03And we have sometimes sometimes I feel like those kids are you know at the wrong high school that don't get the look or they're on the wrong summer team they're not getting to the right tournaments or sometimes you know and these kids fall through the cracks a little bit. And you know what coaches like you and coaches like Dan Sheen at Le Moyne and Coach Purdy up at a Delphi and you know just you you guys are grabbing these these really good players. What are you doing for recruiting? Are you staying mainly on the east coast? Do you stay mainly in the south? Do you come up north? Do you hit you know the Connecticut Long Island Maryland area?
SPEAKER_00You know we we recruit nationally I mean we got kids from Texas got a bunch of Canadian kids we've we've had Colorado California all up and down the East Coast from Massachusetts to Florida. You know oddly enough like our best of the best kids in the history of our program have been from North Carolina.
SPEAKER_03Yeah Mr.
SPEAKER_00Dickerson Yeah I mean Eric was a division one player you know 100% you know that kid that kid could have he could have played anywhere you know after his fifth year and he wanted to come back that year to help us you know attempt to win a championship got us to the championship game but um you know that there are great kids playing everywhere like I what I tell kids is only about a thousand kids a year that can play division one and that might be hot you know if they got 70 there's 75 division one teams they each take 10 kids 15 kids yeah it's really not that many kids and there are thousands of them out there playing that can play at a high level so it's you know and and and for we're fortunate we've got great facilities I think I think LR's got the best facilities right now in division two and I you know better than a lot of division one programs. And I think that helps us you know get some of those cues.
SPEAKER_02Yeah with without a doubt without we've seen some of the programs you know like Barton and some of the others that are just starting that do that infrastructure as part of it because that is a big uh selling point. So that's great to hear from you. I have to ask this question I I think it's just kind of funny. So and get your perspective on it because Danny and I just put out our top 20 you know USA lacrosse had Lenore Ryan ranked seventh inside lacrosse had you at four Danny and I had you at number two in the nation preseason well I always say to Danny that and 25 cents won't get you a cup of coffee but what do you do what do you put any stock in that or is it just kind of silly and fun to like Danny and I trying to do that just tough to do what what do you we only put stock in the ones that like put us seventh you know and then those are those are the ones that go on the bulletin board.
SPEAKER_00Yeah yeah there you said 100% I I can't I I don't like preseason all Americans I don't like you know you got to put a poll out but you know I just I just think the preseason all American stuff is goofy you know it's it's all based on what you do this year. What happened last year it's nice for kids but you know sometimes it puts some pressure on kids that they don't need right you know it's some undue pressure. So I you know I I we we don't we don't put much stock in that stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah I I agree with you the we Danny and I did not even a lot of times when they get to the all Americans USILA all Americans we will talk about them at least tell who got it from the year but preseason we don't do that because it to me though it like you said it's silly it's silly it may put pressure on it see what they can do this year. It's a new season so um but switching topics like I let me ask you this we're recording this a week early uh so you've already played against Maryville but how do you prepare for a team like them and what is it like to match up right out of the gate with a GLBC team because you did that last year with U Indy as well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah um you know we it's funny like our our our preparation all week is we we concentrate 80% on us throughout the week you know like that's our philosophy is is we have to if we do what we do really well we're gonna be okay. Yeah Thursday Friday we'll start we'll start talking about our opponents but you know it's it's really oh and I think Vic alluded to a little bit like we want to do what we do really well. And and that's been our philosophy. But it's you know you just every and I I think our guys learned a lesson last year. I think last year we were you know we lost to you in the uh Tampa and limestone punched us in the mouth early yeah and I think I think we have almost virtually the entire team back from last year. It's like hey last year we thought we were really good coming out of the game and we did not prepare that way. You know this year our guys are preparing um like they have a chip on their shoulder and it makes a big difference.
SPEAKER_03Well I've been saying for a few years coach that you you know the bears have been knocking on that door. Kevin and I were discussing that in our last podcast we just felt that the bears have been really knocking on that door right there right there right there. And that's why I put you guys at number two in my preseason I just think you have you know if you listen to our podcast Kevin and I talk about all the time the ingredients to make that cake you know and you got you have all the ingredients especially with the the the the kids you got coming back and Kannada and and and and and just some of the guys that you have coming back it's just it's going to be tough to beat little Nora Ryan team I think this year. Yeah and if they're coming with a chip on the sh their shoulder while watch out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah it's funny we do have we do have a lot coming back. I mean with that COVID year you know where where those kids will canada Bryce Reese and Tor Torli those guys were freshmen. They got that year back I mean that was like a red shirt year basically right yeah 2020. So you know we've got a great group coming back and yeah we'll see what happens week by week that's all that's all we focus on is you know we've got Maryville and we'll go from there.
SPEAKER_03And then you got the sack which is not an easy task you know those some of them boys are going to come after you you know that they are yeah and I know that you're gonna be going after some of them you know those those limestone and those Wingate Bulldog games are going to be quite quite the matches to uh see. Hey coach thank you so much for coming on tonight with us we really appreciate it um nothing but respect for the Lenore Ryan Bears and everything that you've done with them over the years and uh continued success man I'm sure I'll be between the bricks again soon. All right love to have you guys down thanks so much for having us thanks coach
Games to Watch
SPEAKER_03so that was great talking with Coach Paradine he was he was great to have on yeah coach paradigm's a great coach he's been knocking on that door for a couple of years Kevin I think he he does have the squad this year to to make a lot of noise and make a legitimate run I'm I'm thankful he came on and he's a good guy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah well and it's uh it proved out in game against Maryville obviously we recorded it before he played Maryville and I was I asked him about how does he prepare for a GLVC team and he basically said we take care of us first 80% of that the right practice time is on what we have to do as us as a team not what we have to do against another team and it and it proved out they just dominated that game so well let's move on to games to watch this week we've got another really good slate of games so you want to get into them yeah you let's do it man who do you who do you want to talk about first so I've got two on Friday I've got Rockhurst against CSU Pueblo and the reason why I've got this one kind of listed is CSU Pueblo came close against Tuscellum it was a 9-7 game this weekend it was a good game it was a good game to watch they they almost they almost came back to they came close to making a uh 9-8 and bringing it but they've got another tough test against a tough glbc opponent in rockhurst and that's their first game and that's why I find it kind of interesting rockhurst is going to be shaking off the rust from last year but they're a really good team and CSU just came off a yeah a tough loss but a competitive game you know and this is where coach Blair wants his team he wants playing these tough teams like this and he wants a game against Rockhurst prove to where he's gonna be he wants these games to get ready not only for the Armac but to actually get in there and beat Colorado Mesa andor Westminster.
SPEAKER_03Yeah you know for CSU Pueblo to to lose to an SAC team just by two goals a 9-7 obviously a tight nick you know tough game and now they're gonna play Rockhurst Rockhurst again like you just said their first game CSU's got one under the belt they played competitive they could say hey you know what if we just maybe would have done this or that we could have won that game. So now they go in with some confidence this should be a good this should be a decent game.
SPEAKER_02Yes so now the other one on Friday I've got is the one we've kind of talked about in the earlier segment gotta watch and that is that's a gotta watch game yeah Florida Southern against Anderson Anderson put up 32 goals against Chuan in their first game most goals in program history yeah cam Weeks went 18 for 18 at the face off yeah oh oh by the way that's how the whole game started they had a goal in the first five seconds because Cam Weeks pushed the ball forward picked it up ran down no one slid to him boom goal yep and that kind of set the tone for that whole game i i i texted coach Mitchell I'm like dude 32 goals he goes Kevin our guys couldn't miss the net they they were putting everything on if you watch that game I went back and watched it they didn't miss off they didn't have any shot many shots that were off the net freshman matt Matthew Rogers with 11 goals a freshman with 11 goals most in program history I think they'd be most in most for one game for anyone so but the they're going up who they play they played Chouan so now they're going up against a much tougher opponent in Florida Southern huge difference in opponents right here okay yeah big difference in opponents first of all just in their defense Florida Southern's defense and the amount of offensive firepower they have they are just loaded so I I think I think it's gonna be a test and it's gonna be a test for uh for Florida Southern's face-off team against the best in the country in division two well they got a few they got a few uh face-off guys now since Mr.
SPEAKER_03Horowitz left and they they ran out Jacob Chris last week and he did pretty darn good so we'll see who's gonna he's gonna come out this week I bet against Cam. And you know what that's gonna be a game where Florida Southern's gonna have to play some defense and and and and try to score early goals. Yeah so that that's a gotta watch game for me Kev.
SPEAKER_02I'm with you I'm with you here's my other now this is on Saturday this is the gotta watch game for me and it's a top seven matchup based on the USILA coach's poll to top six matchup in the in the crease poll and that is wing gate against Mercyhurst. Yeah that's a big game like a big big biggie for both teams both teams I don't know if you saw the wing gate game the other day but they looked very very very good and very deep so you that's you just said the word you talked to me about this in the preview with them. You know Greco and Riley they had their games like they usually do great Willie Greco had five goals five assists Danny Riley had five goals three assists but they had 10 other goal scores 10 others I talked to you about this midfield system that they have they coming in and they got guys going totally different from years past and it was unbelievable they just so two two one other stat well two other stats but one in their favor they had a 64 to 29 advantage and ground balls wingate in that game 64 to 29. Yeah it wasn't it was a blowout so you know wingate looked very good to me they looked very deep they looked sharp creco and riley you know combined for 18 of the 24 points now now the one thing I'll say is they did have six penalties that game and they can't have that against a team like mercyhurst no there's things that you know they're gonna have to clean up a little bit again you know first first game for both you know win game like well and this is mercy hearst's first game coming in but like we talked about with them they come back with loaded offense and a really good defense yep and it's always a close game these two coaches know each other really well they go way back yeah and Sean Duran a face off which is big yeah you know so this is going to be a good game these guys go at it this they've been kind of going back and forth mercy hearston wing for the last six seven eight years now and uh it's always a great game and you know what has huge ramifications at the end of the year.
SPEAKER_03So yeah the top seven matchup right in the beginning of the season it's a gotta watch game Kev.
SPEAKER_02Yep yep here's another one you kind of pointed to on Saturday and that's Kotabba against Mount Olive.
SPEAKER_03Yeah coach Murph hosts hosts his old team you know so and cotaba looked very good last last Saturday you know so Mount Olive's coming off that stinging loss and now they got to travel to Kataba and Coach Murphy's old team so you know you know Murphy's gonna put he wants to he wants to win that game.
SPEAKER_02He does but I guarantee Dylan Price does too oh a hundred percent 100% it's the mentor and the the apprentice right exactly it'll be interesting to see if Monolf can bounce back from that that tough game against lander like especially against his old coach. Yeah and on the road it's gonna be a good game I put that as like a just from the storyline once again between the two coaches it'll just be a lot of fun to watch yeah you know what the game I want to watch too I want to see Wilmington play Tampa.
SPEAKER_03I've got that on my list too you you go first. I just think you know I want to see what Wilmington's got it's a good test for Wilmington. And you know what it's a decent test for Tampa too Wilmington's a ranked team.
SPEAKER_02Yeah well and I'll tell you what I love the schedule that coach Zwickert put together they start off with Tampa and then they go mercyhurst pace and then Mercy yeah man he's got a pedal to the medal against top 10 teams yeah yeah and it's this is gonna it's they're going down to Tampa for this game. This is a real tough test for them and like you said though Tampa can't take them lightly whatsoever.
SPEAKER_03No no not at all not one bit so Wilmington has scorers they have players and they have a good coach so they're athletic they're deep you know Womington is an up and coming squad that made a lot of noise last year Kevin they were really really good yeah so you know I I'm interested to see how they fare against Tampa.
SPEAKER_02I am too I've got one other game on Saturday I'm looking at and that's Belmont Abbey against Newberry now Newberry's first game is this Wednesday against young Harris you know my impression is they'll win that game and this will be their first real challenge against Belmont Abbey. Now Belmont Abbey's coming like we talked about they beat Mars Hill but they got they got off the ball slow they got they got did not score a lot they can't do that against Newberry.
SPEAKER_03No newberry everybody better watch out for Newberry it's I said that in the in the preseason watch out for Newberry. They're deep they're strong they're fast they're in the SAC they know what they got coach cotter I think he's got a little chip on his shoulder I think they want to win man so you I think they I I think they have the team to make some noise this year I really do. So are they going to beat Belmont Abbey?
SPEAKER_02Yeah they're gonna beat Belmont Abbey all right I I've I I told you I hung it up I I got my one right with Emory Riddle I'm not saying another word I'm um I think that's gonna be a good game I think I think Newberry may have the advantage as well you'll see you'll see my friend okay I've got you know what one more too I'd like to talk about yeah go ahead I've got one more you've got one more go for it the Maryville LMU game I want to see how LMU plays against a good you know team in Maryville. Maryville won against uh uh uh U Indy last week come on give them a break Maryville won against Lenore Ryan I mean Lenore Ryan Memorial Lincoln Memorial won up against Lees McRae and they showed that they're a different team in last year now lease McRae is still trying to you know gain some promise to they're they're not probably but Lincoln Memorial's had down times and they took it to Liz McRae. So I think you're right.
SPEAKER_03I think that's will be a really interesting game I did not have that on my list but I should have you know I I I'm thinking take away from Maryville playing on you know top three top four team in Lenore Ryan at Lenore Ryan. Yes in between the bricks exactly so that's a tough that's a tough tall task right there. But you know what I'm interested to see how LMU and Maryville I think that'll be a good matchup.
SPEAKER_02Yeah I agree with you I agree with you I've got one more and it's next Wednesday on the 15th of February and that is Saint Rose against Mercy and here's the reason why it's the second game for new head coach Ryan McSpadden and the Mavs they open with Dominican on Saturday but I if I I have to say between Dominican and St. Rose I think Saint Rose is I will think will be the better squad this year and it's the first game for St.
SPEAKER_03Rose I expect I expect them to to improve this year but this is a tough first opponent so it'll be really interesting to see what happens yeah we'll see what Brady Kearnan and the boys TJ Heider and Mr Amano and goal we'll see what they have to say about that oh I agree it's a it's an uphill it's an uphill battle come out on fire I guarantee it well it's Mercy's second game. There watch watch they're gonna come out on fire.
SPEAKER_02Yeah all right Danny that's what I've got so far for the games to watch next week that's it that's all I got
Ryan Scoble
SPEAKER_02okay let's move on to the player spotlight Danny we have a great and I mean great guest tonight we have interviewed all Americans players of the year the top players in each position but this player has achieved well beyond any of those those players we highlighted him last week as you remember and we were so impressed with the story that you know we reached out and guess what he was actually willing to come on so we are really excited to welcome in the general of Scoble's army Ryan Scoble excited to be here very excited Ryan Ryan oh my god what I can't believe you came on man with such an amazing story um first off how you doing how you doing I'm doing great um I have no complaints um definitely have been in uh worse situations than I am now and you know I I can't really complain I'm I'm playing lacrosse with uh 50 some odd of my best friends so I'm I'm living life right now that's just amazing can you just walk through your story uh uh of the last 20 months but really where it started in your own words and and kind of the progression from there sure um the story starts back in November 2020 um we had just ended our fall ball
SPEAKER_01And I got a call one day that from home that my father had randomly came across and had a stroke. Um, caught me off guard. My dad's a very healthy, active guy. And we were kind of in awe of of why it happened and where it came from. We we've never really had any pre-existing medical problems in my family. And um, my dad, after being monitored for a few days, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, which in layman's terms is severe heart failure. Um, we had no, we again we had no idea really where it came from. Um, it was very sudden and it was very aggressive. Um, my dad's physical condition plummeted pretty quickly. And at that time, it was the holiday season, peak COVID. Um, yeah, I came home quickly and I I didn't get to see him until about a week before I left to come back to school. Wow. Um and oh yeah, I mean, I I could imagine what what he had been through just being in the hospital peak COVID. I mean, it was a nightmarish time. Um totally and then I I'd come back to school. I uh I broke my foot two days before preseason started. So at the time I was rehabbing a broken foot. And um around a month after that, I had slowly started working back on the field. And I realized quickly after putting my cleats back on that, oh, I'm I'm not in the physical condition I need to be in. You know, I'm not in lacrosse shape. So I um started staying extra after practice and really kind of trying to get those extra reps in to kind of hone in my my physical shape. I mean, lacrosse is a very, very cardiac sport. Um, so I I was, you know, I'm I've been working out extra and I just feel like my physical condition just keeps getting worse. Um, but me being arrogant, I kept pushing it aside. You know, I got an upper respiratory infection, or I'm I'm sick, I got the flu. And we pushed it off and pushed it off until it kind of became noticeable from me and from others. Um, I noticed it was a problem when I would walk up a flight of stairs. And I'm I'm at this time, I'm 21 years old. Yeah, you know, I'm walk walking up a flight of stairs to go to my apartment and I'm out of breath.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's that's a little odd. That slowly progressed into me waking up in the middle of the night with just a running, a running heartbeat and just irregular breathing. And again, at this time, I'm I'm not thinking it's it's heart failure. I'm not thinking, you know, I'm I'm severely ill. I'm thinking, oh, it's you know, I got this stupid cough, or you know, maybe it's COVID. And I just kept pushing it off. Um, about a week and a half after I really started seeing serious symptoms, we drove down to Wheeling, West Virginia. And around, I think my first run was around maybe the end of the second, beginning of the third. And I I remember I got dodged at X and I made a play on the ball. And I remember making the play on the ball and then immediately being like, wow, I got I gotta get down on my knees. I gotta breathe. I'm I'm I'm drowning here. Um my my trainer took me off. He's like, Man, you know, you look terrible. You know, you you're you're white as a ghost. And the next day we went in and got x-rays, not really anticipating what we were gonna see. And the next day I remember I kind of got squeezed in for these x-rays. It was very quick. And I get put in, and it was around four o'clock, got my x-rays done. Around seven o'clock, I got a call from our head trainer. And I remember his his voice was kind of uneasy. And he he told me, he goes, Ryan, I need to pick you up uh first thing in the morning, and we're gonna go back to the back to the hospital, do some more tests. Um, at that time I knew it was something serious. The next day we went to the hospital, um, waited in the waiting room for probably five minutes, felt like two hours, and a team of doctors came out, and that's when I knew it was something.
SPEAKER_02Oh boy, that's not what you want to see, Rob.
SPEAKER_01Oh boy. Yeah, being four four fellows are coming out and immediately hooking me up to whole sock meters, and I was immediately getting the EKGs taken and everything surrounding my heart. So at that time I got a little uneasy, and then the big doctor came in. He was, you know, started blurting all these anatomy terms. And to be honest, I barely passed high school anatomy, so it was all going over my head, and I was just like, hey man, just kind of tell me simplify what you just said, you know, with a little easier vocabulary. And he basically said, You have severe heart failure. Um, your heart is your heart's massive. My heart was so big, it was uh it wasn't it wasn't squeezing, it was uh it was twitching. And yeah, at that time I was immediately put in an emergency room. Um, and that point moving forward, it was in and out of hospitals. I uh was transferred out of that hospital to another local Erie hospital that was a little more well equipped with uh cardiac devices. And then after that, I was um sent back home where I was taken care of at Christ Hospital, where my father was taken care of. And it kind of kind of went downhill from there. About uh, I was probably home for maybe two or three weeks. And it's actually crazy, is I the doctors at my home had allowed me to come up, come up back to school and collect the rest of my my belongings I had in my apartment and the locker room and kind of say goodbye to the boys. And I I worked it in. I I worked it in in a game. So I came up and I watched the boys uh whoop on all somebody's and it was it was kind of a you know last goodbye, you know. Hopefully I'll see you guys next year, but you know, I gotta get this figured out. Right. Um, and then the next day I got home, I remember I was feeling a little run down and I took a nap. And upon waking up from that nap, I got up and I walked out of my room down the stairs, and everything had gone completely. It was like I had tunnel vision. I could only see maybe two, three feet in front of me, and I couldn't hear a thing. It was like, you know, like a whooshing and all this ecstatic noise in my ears. And um I I went down, I'm like, mom, I can't hear anything you're saying. My mom's trying to talk to me, mom. I started freaking out. I go, mom, I I cannot hear a single word you're saying right now. Um, and my mom, you know, she like like Kurt Ryan said, she's mom of the ear. She immediately calls the ambulance. And um, I was quickly told that I was in cardiogenic shock. So I had uh just undergone either a heart attack while I was sleeping or when I woke up. And um I was quickly rushed to the hospital and put under extreme care. I mean, I was in ICUs moving forward for the next three months. And yeah, three months. That's that's that's an overstatement, probably two months. Um still from from give or take a month. Yeah, take a month off there. It's it's not that serious. Um but after a couple days in Christ, I still remember the day. I mean, I'm I'm laying in my bed, and um, and we were pretty we were very close with Christ being hell three months ago. I was we were talking to these same doctors with my dad. Yeah. And um, you know, we were really close to the staff there. And I I had a doctor come into my room. I remember, and uh, she looked me in the eyes and said, Ryan, we're gonna have to transfer you to Cleveland Clinic. Um, the only course of action we see fit to move forward with is a heart transplant. And that was uh holy shit. Yeah. I mean, I still remember laying there, kind of looking up and looking at a ceiling, ceiling tile and just like honing in, being like, you know, what the hell did you say? She didn't say a heart transplant and just kind of sitting there and and just taking it, you know, it took forever to process. I mean, you know, I'm I started thinking, like, what? Like, like, where am I? You know, like I got delirious. I'm like, am I even supposed to be here right now? Um, you know, they're talking a heart transplant. And then about a couple hours after that, they pull me on an ambulance, ship me up to the Cleveland clinic, and there I spent the next coming months waiting for a heart transplant, um, getting a heart transplant and recovering up there. But I mean, you know, if I'm gonna look at it, I I couldn't have been luckier really with uh the the course of action moving forward. I mean, I I wasn't really that aware of the I guess the skill of Cleveland Clinic.
SPEAKER_02But they're they're an amazing clinic, an amazing clinic. Amazing.
SPEAKER_01Um, and I was I was quickly, I was quickly introduced to the amazing Cleveland Clinic care. I was put in um J38, which that's their their heart failure unit. Um and if you know those who know about Cleveland Clinic know that their um their biggest thing that they're known for globally is is cardiac care. So I was in you know the best care from from doctors to to nurses, um, technicians, all across the board. I was under, you know, the the best care and and treatment I could possibly be in. And moving forward in there, I mean, it was uh it wasn't it wasn't pretty, you know, it wasn't um wasn't really where you want to be spring and summer of your you know junior year of college. There was a lot of um a lot of ups and downs really when I was at the clinic, uh about a weekend to me being listed, because it's a huge process for I didn't know and and getting listed, they almost interviewed for it, you know, and and I was I was interviewed on uh how I took care of my body. Believe it or not, they they question you on the medicine you'll be taking. You know, do you do you know exactly the pills you'll be taking if you do get a heart transplant? Um, they do a deep analysis on on your lifestyle and everything that you're gonna be doing moving forward. Because, you know, they're in my condition, they're they're putting a generous donor's heart inside your body. They they need to make sure you're fit to use it. That's unbelievable, man. Unbelievable. It really is. And um so I I I was listed and and it I was listed pretty high due to my uh rapidly decreasing condition. Sadly, I was uh the way they list you really is uh if you're at the top of the list, that's uh a good and bad thing. You know, it most uh means need up Oregon as soon as possible. Um so I was up pretty high on the list. Uh and uh about a week after being listed, I was told that I had a a what was it? I had an antibody that fought against an anti-coagulant that they use during heart transplants called heparin. Um and basically this antibody in my blood made me uh uh unfit to at that time get a heart transplant. Um, so I was for a week I was taken off the transplant list. I was kind of hopeless. I uh sat there for four or five days, not really knowing what the future was going to entail. Um, because at the time I was told that um really a heart transplant was my only um course of action moving forward. Um so for about four or five days, I had a lot of time to really kind of hone in on the situation at hand. And and sadly, I mean, I grew up more in those four or five days than I had in the past 21 years of my life. Um and miraculously, after those, after those five days, I had a nurse come into my room and uh tell me that they did a repeat blood test and that my blood test actually came back and showed that I didn't have that antibody and that I would be relisted.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01So for a week I'm sitting there thinking, God almighty. Oh, like a little roller coaster ride. Exactly. Um, I'm you know, I spent five days reflecting on the life I'd had, and then all of a sudden, come the weekend, I'm sitting here and I have a my I'm back on my my plan to get a transplant. And crazy enough, uh, a couple of days after that, on Mother's Day, and I I left this part out, but um, I was on the tail end of COVID in Cleveland Clinic, and being I'm in a heart failure unit, I'm surrounded by a lot of um immunely amino compromised individuals. I was allowed one guest, and that was my mom. And my mom would have limited hours with me um due to the serious nature of the floor I was on. So I actually got the call that I was relisted, and then I got the call that I had a had a heart on Mother's Day with my mom. Oh, that is awesome! Wow, yeah, it was pretty miraculous. And then a couple of days later, I find myself uh, I joke around, I got picked up by SEAL team six. That's what I call the uh heart surgery out into my my ward of the hospital, and they're all you know, garbed out and all their you know, their masks and their shields, and they come in and and they picked me up, and I got brought into uh the operating room. And uh I you guys will get a kick out of this because the boys love this story, but um I think I've heard it, but I want to hear it again. Yeah, yeah. They uh they sat me down on the operating table, and it's pretty crazy how they do it. They uh, you know, they they have teams of each individual. Um they have a an anesthesia team present, they have a cardiac team present, they have a blood and vascular, they have all these different teams. So in my operating room, there's 20, 30 some odd people standing around me and they're doing a huddle around me. As the main heart surgeon goes, oh, we have Ryan Scoble, 21-year-old male, you know, kind of giving my general specs out there. And all these people are writing on me, telling me, you know, what they need to do in the operation. And at the end of it, they they sit down and they go, Okay, Ryan, do you have anything you'd like to say? And I go, So please don't mess up. You know, I'm putting a lot of I'm I'm I'm guessing you guys are gonna ball out, being you're all surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic. Um, and I go, I'd like a picture of the heart. If you guys can take a picture of the heart, that'd be really cool. Um, but I go, lastly, the second you guys put that that heart in me, I'd like you to play Kickstart My Heart by Motley Crew. There you go, bro. There you go. And those that don't know, that's that's our uh that's our runout song here at Mercy Hurst. And also it's literally called Kickstar My Heart. I mean, that you can't play a better song after putting a heart in something. Oh my God. And and all the surgeons got a kick out of it the next day. I was I was sitting in the ICU and I'm laying there, and you know, they got me on all type of, you know, I just got cut in half. So they got me on every pain pill and the the the market, and I'm sitting there just looped out. And I kept having these these these nurses come up to me. Hey man, we played it. It was it was crazy. You know, the whole operating room went went nuts, and I'm like, oh, cool, cool, cool.
SPEAKER_03That's so awesome, man.
SPEAKER_01You know, everyone would kind of come up to me, all these random nurses, and they'd be like, Oh, you're the you're the the you're the kickstar of my heart kid, aren't you? And I was like, Yeah, you know, that's how they did it. So uh yeah, I I got a heart transplant. Um, after that, it was really, you know, sitting in the hospital for another two, three weeks. Um I'm I'm so young.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so let's just move forward a little bit. What what did you have to do to recover to be able to play like you you can now?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um a lot of it was at first, of course, it was reteaching yourself to run. Um, one of the the biggest obstacles I faced with with having this heart is um it's not in the same rhythm that that I'm used to. So breathing and and moving can be different, and and it can be very difficult at times. So the big thing for me was kind of honing in on getting back to to being able to run, getting back to being able to um move my feet and and to be able to, it sounds weird, but I had to reteach myself kind of everything. And once I kind of showed that I was back in physical condition to where I could, I wasn't gonna get wasn't gonna get hurt per se, I I then posed the idea to the um my transplant team about possibly returning back to to college sports. And they were very hesitant. I mean six months ago, just you know, just just oh, I left out a crazy story and coach is gonna get ticked, left it out. But I I had I had died for a short stint after my heart transplant. Um I had some complications with a device they had inside of me, and I had flatlined for 11 seconds. Um so the way they see it, they see this this kid just died six months ago in our hospital, and now he's he's he wants to play college sports. Now he wants to play college lacrosse, like like lacrosse of all, yeah. Yeah. Um, and really they were like, hey, you you gotta prove it to us that that you can even compete in in a casual athletic atmosphere, let alone um with other college athletes. So I um I I'm not I'm not I don't really like sitting around, so I I got right to it. I mean, I got home and they said, Oh, we just want you walking. So I would go home and I would walk four or five miles, you know, and then you can start jogging. So I would start jogging and I started just kind of slowly building myself up. And then um, at the time I was working a sales job selling printers. Um, so I had some money saved up. So I decided to go to one of those fancy schmancy like performance gyms and and uh ProForce in Cincinnati ended up working directly with me and um getting me back to being in lacrosse shape. And then, you know, I mean, I got back here and there were still some hiccups. Uh my first, my first run in sixes, I was three minutes into a six on six, and I was like, Yeah, you know, I gotta get out, gotta get out, you know, I gotta catch my breath. But uh I'm at the point now where it's it's you know, it's it's synchronous back to where I was. I mean, I'm it's really just kind of working slowly, building up and pushing myself day in and day out to to reaching a new level and and building those levels up to the point where you know now I'm able to to get out there and and play lacrosse.
SPEAKER_02That is freaking amazing, dude.
SPEAKER_03Oh my lord, what a uh unbelievable. That's an unbelievable story, man. And and so well, so well told by you, Ryan. Uh um, are you an English major? Are you?
SPEAKER_01I'm not, but uh I've I've had to tell this story quite a few times. So I've um I've you know I enjoy telling it. And ultimately moving forward with this, I mean, actively I I'd like to be able to use this story as a way to motivate others, not only in the the transplant world, but but really anybody going through any type of of serious problem. I mean, we all, I'm sure you gentlemen have we all have hiccups in life, we all have times where we feel like we've hit rock bottom and we feel like it's over. But you know, I really want my story to kind of set the precedent of don't ever throw in the towel, you know, don't count yourself out no matter what has been thrown at you. Be the master of your own decisions and go out there and get it. And that's that's what I live every day.
SPEAKER_03Good for you, man. Good for you. I I can only imagine like some of those days of of being in the hospital, like you said, and you know, when you said I got taken off the list and then you're sitting there. I can only imagine the mental part of that as well, you know, not only the physical, but the mental part of that. But you seem to keep a pretty good outlook going through it. I'm sure you had your ups and downs, the peaks and valleys. And you know, I think that's normal in in any type of situation. We're gonna, you know, like you hit the nail on the head, you know. This our life is on the road, it's filled with speed bumps, little bumps, and you got to learn how to navigate through those ups and downs. But how did you get through? The down parts, that's what I want to know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was um, you know, it's it was hard for me, you know. Looking back on it, it was um I and to be honest, Danny, I I still hit downs, I still have down periods, and a lot of it really is is perspective. You know, I at times when I was in the midst of it, sure, I I victimized myself and I sat there and boo-hoo, you know, you're 21 and you're sitting here with a you know a a broken, a failed heart, and you know, you're dying and you have died, all this. And and I just realized it's it's a waste of time and a waste of energy that um you know only have we only have precious, you know, certain time on this earth. And I and I realized that I was gonna make the best out of any second I had. And those times that I lived being in those downs, I think I realized at that moment that I was at this is the lowest I'll ever be. You know, if I make it through this day, if I make it through this week, if I make it through this month, you know, look where I be, you know, look how much stronger I'll be if if I get through. And um, yeah, I mean, hell, it doesn't get much worse than dying. So I I can't I can't really complain much more moving forward.
SPEAKER_02Um I'm laughing at that. That it just is I it's ironic. It's not it's ironic, funny that the way you say that it sounds funny, but if you think about it, my god, that is as true as you can get.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and and I've been listening I I've been handed a gift, you know. A lot of people like to paint this, this sure, this obstacle was scarring, and and it was there's times of it that were very scary and and unpredictable, but I'm I'm 22 years old and and I have I have this heightened perspective on life, I have this outlook on life at my age. I mean, I've been given I've been given a huge opportunity here. I've been given a gift. I mean, with with how with how I'm able to really appreciate um things moving forward. I mean, I'm I'm hoping that that this event only really forecasts success for my future.
SPEAKER_03Another, another special, another special gift you have is your mom. Yeah, well what a special lady, huh? What what she had to go through with, you know, your dad and then you. I mean, how about your mom? How about a big shout out to mom?
SPEAKER_01Huge shout out to my mom. Um, and I'm sorry if you guys hear that music in the background. We're we're about to practice for the boys, we're getting the tunes pumping. All right, all right. But uh, yeah, I mean, enormous shout out to my mom. And uh, I really think the the composure um in which my mom handled both in that situation is something that I extremely admire. I mean, you know, I I I couldn't have asked more out of any mom, and she was there every step of the way, she's still there every step of the way. God bless her. Yeah, God bless her. I mean, I I I'm honestly I I I can only hope for success moving forward because I I'd love to be able to uh you're on your way, young man.
SPEAKER_02You've you've had more success in your life in that 20 months, or probably 26 months when you start first start out than most people have in a lifetime and how you've handled it. It is simply amazing. And you know, when we talked to to Coach Ryan about this, he obviously said your mom deserved uh mom of the year. But yeah, what is it like? I have to ask this too, because you talk about the boys. What's it like to be back with the boys at Mercyhurst, actually not even playing, but with with that other support system that you have?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, I mean, it's it's it's incredible. Um, and it's it's a little different. I mean, it's it's it's kind of cool. It's a little different in the in the fact that when I when I got sick, I was um it was in the spring of my junior year. So the freshmen, the freshmen when I was a junior are now juniors. Yeah, right. So it's it was kind of odd coming back and seeing these guys that were like my little brothers kind of be these these big, you know, grown ass men. But I mean, it's it's been everything. I mean, it's you know, the these guys were meant so much to me in in the um in this in the support process. I mean, these guys were here every step of the way. Um, so I mean, a part of a part of my hard work I put in to get back was uh was really just was really fortunate being back with these guys. I mean, these guys make every ounce of of of work put in worth it. To them, it was a little odd. You know, when I told them I was like, hey guys, I'm gonna, I'm gonna come back and uh I'm gonna come back and play. They're like, oh, you sure, man? Because to them, they, you know, it's it's a little, it's a scarm experience for them too.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, kind of kind of witnessing me go from point A to point B so quickly. Um, but I mean, it's it's huge. And I mean, it's it's been um it's been something that that I've uh really hold tightly, kind of coming back here was getting to share those little moments with the guys. Um and ultimately, I mean, that's that's the part of of college across that we often overlook. Um, but we all can say that that is is the best part. It's just you know, the time is the guys. So um, I mean, it's it's great being back.
SPEAKER_03Phenomenal, phenomenal story, Ryan. Uh I'm happy for you. What a great story. So well spoken. Um, I know what Coach Ryan, you know, has we we've spoken about you before, and we know what kind of not only what kind of team he has, because they kick ass all the time, um, but it's the character of and and the quality of the men that he has on his teams that means a lot too. And um, you just proved that in tenfold, if I may. And I'm just I am just so happy for you. And this was a great story tonight. I'm so happy you came on. I really do appreciate it.
SPEAKER_01I really, really appreciate you guys letting me come on and and discuss my story. Um, you guys are the first people I've uh publicly went out and and really done this with. So I really appreciate you letting me come out here and uh be able to share it. I I've enjoyed it deeply.
SPEAKER_02Well, it's it's probably meant more to me and Danny than it probably did for you. And I'm sure it'll mean a lot more to our listeners. At least that's what I'm hoping. Thanks, Ryan, so much for joining us tonight. Have a great practice tonight. Say hi to the boys for us, School's Army. Give our best to Coach Ryan and Coach O'Hagan. Thank them for letting you come on as well. We really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_01Thank you guys, really appreciate your time.
Final Thoughts
SPEAKER_02Danny, I don't know what else to say. Uh, I think that was probably my favorite interview we've ever done before.
SPEAKER_03I think I teared up twice.
SPEAKER_02I had chills, like I thought we talked about it last week, and he brought more chills to me. The way he went through that and the way he admitted also that there were it wasn't all easy, wasn't just uh a walk in the park. It's like, oh, I'm going down this road. No, he said there are a lot of down times, obviously. But what he has done, what Ryan Scoble has done, is like I said, and when we talked to him, he has had more success than most people in their entire lives, and what he was able to do.
SPEAKER_03He's had more on his plate in his young age than most grown-ass men have in a lifetime. Yeah. And and and he came through it. You know, he had he had some tough times, like you said, peaks and valleys and some difficult times, both mentally and physically. But man, his perseverance and his drive and his fortitude and just his outlook on life and just the way he is and his story. He's just so well spoken. Such a again, Kev, I swear to God, I teared up twice during the interview. During just listening to his story, it's just he's a kid. It's a kid. It's not supposed to have that. It's not supposed to go through that, they're not supposed to go through that. These are kids. They're not supposed to be sick like that. They're not supposed to have that. And just to what just to have him come back, first of all, is amazing. And then to get back onto the field and actually play 15 minutes in the scrimmage a couple of weeks ago is just amazing to me. Yeah, and his poor mother, his poor mother, God, what a what a what a blessed soul she is, huh?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, without a doubt, without a doubt. Amazing story. Amazing. And I guess with that, Danny, that's a wrap. That's a wrap, guys.
