You remember the People's League? I hope that Matt Shand doesn't mind me giving you that title since he coined it when we had him on the show. Geez, back like one of our first second season or something like that. Yeah, the People's League. That was pretty awesome.

We got California teams playing now, Kev. Yeah. Hey, California team had two games this weekend. We'll get into that. Gotta get some surf music, right? Little pipeline by the ventures. That's right. All right. I love it. Yeah, so the season the season's going, man. It started this weekend. It was an exciting weekend. There was a lot of good stuff going on, Kev. What do you think?

It was great to see, like we talked about, and I think we'll get into it a little bit. You know, first game of the season. A lot of things still to knock off the rust. Some uh some sloppy play out there, but in the end, I think it was it was there's some great games to go

Week in Review

over. So why don't we get started with the weekend review? Typically, Danny, what we do in our weekend review, right? We usually go chronologically. So we would have started back on Thursday games. This time, though, I think we need to start with a game on Saturday, and I have to start with an apology. I have to bow to Coach Ward and his Florida Southern team. I had them 19 in my top 20 because of what they lost on offense. But what I really discounted was their defense. And their defense against Wingate, I think, played like a top five team. So I was wrong with them. I admit it right now. And if you saw the USILA first week poll, they shot up to number seven.

Yeah, they played well. They played well.

They upset the Wingate Bulldogs. That was an upset, yeah. Yep, it was. It was. I do not think anyone, except for Florida State fans and players and families, had Wingate losing that game. And I will tell you, oh, go ahead.

Number Florida, number 13, Florida Southern beat number three Wingate eight to seven.

And and let's just say that right there. They beat Wingate. There were two players, one on each, I'll tell you, the goalies both had gains. Michael Simone had 15 saves, and Thomas Sullivan had 18 saves. Yes. But then you add some other things for Florida Southern. Jacob Chiz had faceoff, he won 66.7% of the face-offs. And he was a threat on offense. He wasn't just getting the ball.

Well, if you remember in our last podcast and players to watch, I brought up J. You know, I said this guy's good. He's very good. He was really, really good on Saturday. He was really, really good. A big reason why they did so well. He was getting possession. The Wingate Bulldogs blew out to a five-nothing quick lead. And I was like, oh, here we go. You know, they were causing turnovers and getting um long pole goals and stuff like that. And I was like, here we go. Here we go. And that's what I was going to say.

And I wrote this down, and then it was a little bit of hindsight because their first three goals were transition goals. Two by long poles, Peyton Farley and Johnny Salomon. And then they had an empty nender by Matt PayPal at the midline. Yeah, because they were in the 10-mount ride. And they and they he saw it and shot it. But other than that, I mean, so three of their five goals in the first quarter were those transition goals.

Yeah, they have five goals, like I said, quick five goals is five-nothing or five-one after one. Five-nothing after one. And then Wingate, the prolific offensive team that's been basically averaging 18-19 goals a game for the last couple of years, only scored two goals for the rest of the game, Kev.

I'll tell you what, both defenses played really well. Their sticks were very active. But in the end, Florida Southern won out on their defense. They confused Wingate's offense enough that they just never got in a rhythm. They never, two things. They net rarely scored any offensive sets. One, they didn't have the ball that much. And then two, when they did have the ball on offense on a six-on-six, they seemed to push it and try to make quick goals instead of really working the ball.

I couldn't agree with you more. I mean, they you're right. They they pushed the ball, they were trying to get quick goals, like you said, taking shots early in the clock instead of maybe perhaps working the ball and just you know trying to make it a defense move. And yeah, it wasn't it wasn't working.

Yeah, and then when they were trying some things like they had looked like there's some open skip passes, I don't think Wingate, and I didn't go back to watch the film, but I would venture to see they had very few, if any, successful skip passes because all of a sudden there was a stick in the passing lane, and and Florida Southern turned it over.

Yeah, they had a couple of successful skips, but they, you know, I tell you, Florida Southern's defense was active. They had the sticks and lanes, they were knocking down balls. Um, you know, then you look at the stats and you're just like, darn, it's pretty darn close.

It was. That's what got me after the game. I would have thought that Wingate would have had more turnovers and had less cost turnovers, but that wasn't the case.

No, you know, hey, Brendan Glasser had two goals. Matt Flaminspec, the kid we talk about all the time, had two goals and assists. Like you said, like you mentioned, Mikey Simone in goal with 15 saves. He had a great game. Um, and the usual crew, Danny Riley with three goals for Wingate, Willie Greco, one goal and three assists, and uh a goal by Matt PayPack, the two goals by the defenseman that you said. Yeah. Um, and like Thomas Sullivan in goal with 18 saves. But Florida Southern outshot Wingate. Yeah. Wingate averages about 49 to 50 shots a game. He only had 34 shots in this game. They didn't have the ball. And when they had the ball, they didn't do good things with it. Um, shots on goal, wingate 22, Florida Southern 26. Turnovers, Florida Southern 24, Wingate 21. Ground balls, Florida Southern 38, Wingate 39. Extra man opportunities, three for eight for Florida.

There's a difference, I think, right here. One for five for Wingate, right? One for five.

But I again that that stat that Burns blows out at you is the face-off. He was 12 for he was 12 for 18 at like almost 70%. He was on unguardable. You know, Dylan Ruckett, the sophomore getting his first start at Wingate, only had uh had two wins in 11 tries. And then they brought in the the the uh freshman, the Lindenwood mid-year towards the end, and uh he went three for six. So you know what? Wingate didn't look good. I I can't say that it was on the defense. I have to say this one's on the offense for Wingate.

Yeah. And for played well for Wingate. Defense played well from Sullivan to the to the long polls, they played well.

And the short sticks played good, you know. LSM choke cornets. Yeah, they you know what? Wingate's still a good team. I think they, I don't know, man. I don't know whether they were looking past this Florida Southern team or they just expected something else, but their offense looked out of sync. And Kev, you know what I noticed? There was a lot of players that usually play for Wingate that weren't on the field.

I think that's a couple when you talk some of the we talked about the I had it in my players to watch, the fabulous freshman five. There was two or three that didn't see the field that game. Would they have made a difference or not? I don't know. I think part of it is once to me, it seems like Florida Southern created enough havoc and chaos that got them totally out of their game plan. Yeah, they looked and they couldn't recover on offense.

Yeah, yeah. And Florida Southern beat him, and it was a low-scoring game. I mean, 8-7.

Danny, you know, I I saw that low score and I had to go back and look. The last time Wingate scored less than 10 was April 13, 2022 against Lenore Ryan. Before that, it was in 2020. Wow. Wow, wow, speaks volumes, doesn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Okay, well, let's move on. Let's go back, let's go back in time a little bit. Let's just start off first game of the season, shorter, taking on Oglethorpe at Oglethorpe's field. They avenge the loss from last year, and I think it was a lot the same circumstances. They go up pretty big, but they lose the ground last year and they lose the game. This year they held on for the W. They won 12-10 against Oglethorpe. So a great start. Actually, they're 2-0 right now. They had another game over the weekend and one. So shorter's 2-0, and they they start off the season. The D2 season with a win. Uh, so that was great. All right, shorter.

Yeah. Now, let's move on to Friday. Friday, we talked about this as a matchup, and this was Alabama Huntsville at home hosting UI. UI ends up winning 13-9. But I'll tell you right now, that game was close for the first three quarters. In the end, I think Undy was too experienced, and they made Alabama Huntsville a little uncomfortable on all sides of the field by that fourth quarter, and they started forcing mistakes, and that was kind of the difference in the game.

Yeah, I agree with you. You know, uh Huntsville hung out hung with them for a while. It was kind of a close game. They went back and forth, I thought, a little bit. You know, uh Justin Williams, the attackman from St. Leo, the grad student. He had three and one. Tristan Schaefer, the Anderson transfer student at UND, had two goals. Owen Owen Braddock, three and two, the middle from East Lansing, Michigan, Kev. Um, and for Alabama Huntsville, Pete Fabrizio, the usual three goals.

And David Friend had two goals, but again, and Carter McCalpin has three had three assists for him. So they they both had players on the sides that were contributing a lot. I give Alabama Huntsville credit. They played well and they can match up with the big boys. They were up 4-0. And it was only one-nothing after one. It was a total defensive struggle. I think it took Undy a bit of time to kind of get their legs under them, you know, and kind of see what they could do.

It was sloppy. It was slow moving, kind of like a lethargic, kind of sloppy type of game in the beginning. But you know what? I expect that a lot from teams in the beginning, the first year, that first game jitters, and you know, they're only back to school a couple of weeks, really, from the Christmas break. So, you know, I think for the first couple of games always tend to be a little sloppy with turnovers and stuff. Yeah, this is no, this one was no different, but you and D was able to pull it out, bro.

Yep, yep. Uh, they were. Uh, so let's let's move on. Let's talk about you started with the surfer music, Dominican with their first game back in NCAA D2 against Adam State. It was a dominating win for him. It was 19-7. But get this, Danny. There we go. First goal back for them.

Yeah, but the first goal wasn't by a California kid. Their first goal back in the NCAA was by a player from Germany via University of Vermont. He's a University of Vermont transfer. That's Pear Anders Alters. He had six and one assist for them that game.

Yeah. Jason Id added five goals and two assists. Jesse Fisher was on the board. Now we know who their guys are, Kev.

Well, first of all, so Jason, I don't know. I want to say Edie because I had worked with a guy the same spelled the same way, but you could be right, I could be right. We got to figure it out with uh coach Samuel.

But he is a California kid from Pleasant Hill, and so is Jesse Fisher. He's from Alice Viejo, California. And Jesse's a freshman, Danny.

Yeah. He's good. He's good. So they they kind of beat the snot out of Adam State, scoring 19 goals, man. Yeah, 19-7 was the final.

I I watched that game. It was great Friday. They stacked the games three at three o'clock and then five o'clock and then seven o'clock on Eastern, so you could catch every game. It was great. Adam State actually played pretty physical. Their problem is they made too many mistakes and they could not clear the ball. So they lost a lot of offensive possessions.

I tell you, I like that kid Matt Lash from Adam State. He's a baller, man. He's like, I'm gonna go out and get mine. He had two goals, and I mean, he's just a fighter. He's a good player.

Yep. Then Dominican turns around on Sunday and plays CSU Pueblo, and they win that game as well. And what'd the kid from Germany do?

Three goals and assists. This kid's balling out. He has nine goals. He's got nine goals and two assists in two games.

Yeah, pretty impressive. Great way for them to start off in their NCAA journey back, huh? Anders Alters. That's a pretty cool name. We'll be saying that name, I think, several more times this season.

And he's out in California. He'll be in movies soon. Yeah, Jesse Fisher again had three goals. Connor Barnes added three goals. Ray Sujiyama on defense for Concordia, California. Three ground balls and a course turnover. You mean Dominican? Dominican, I'm sorry. No, isn't it? What are we doing?

It's Dominican, bro. Come on, we got two California teams. Dominican played Concordia University of at Irvine have not played yet. They've scrimmaged, but they haven't started their season.

Yeah, and for Colorado Colorado for CSU Pueblo, uh Lane Leslie had three goals. Ezra Terry had three goals. Kyle Parker had two goals.

But uh that was a pretty good game.

They they 15-11. 15-11. It was a four-goal game.

And Dominican got up. They were up by four to two, and they just kept that lead. CSU Pueblo couldn't really break it, but they stayed with them. So it was a good game to watch.

Yeah. But you know, let's be real. It's Adam State who's struggled mightily. And even CSU Pueblo, who's a decent team, usually struggles. So these are two kind of on the lower end type teams. So Sammy, Sammy, yeah, for you guys.

Yeah, but two two in the middle, but the meeting schedule's coming. Yeah, yeah. All right. You want did you watch the limestone St. Leo game? I did. Limestone looked good.

It was on fire. You know, you know how many assists he had? You know how many assists he had? He had zero assists. Absolutely done. The kid's not giving it up.

Carter Carter Brand, though, made up for it. He had four goals and four assists. But what I saw, I wrote a note here when it was 12-6 at half and limestone was up. And it was 5-5 after one. And that was back and forth. It was like St. Leo would score, then Limestone would score and back and forth. But Limestone opened it up in the second quarter and they showed why they are top three team. They went in a 7-1 run in the second.

Yeah, their offense looked really good. Zach Barry, like you said, 10 goals. Carter Brand, four and four, man. He had a good name. Yeah. Good game. Four goals and four assists. Great game. Jason Tomford. We like that kid. That kid's a little baller, too, man. Two goals and two assists. Joel Mullen added two goals. Mike Shakiran, two goals and an assist. Ladner was pretty good at the X, you know, 22 out of 37. Um, we have a new goalie over there now at Limestone. The kid only saw 19 minutes of time last year. So he got some big run in this game, Shane O'Leary. He had 11 saves.

I think it's funny, Danny. Just go back to Shane O'Leary. I think I said when we did the preview, I thought Corey Lyons was coming back. I'd have to go back and look at my notes. But he didn't come back. So those are big shoes to fill for Shane O'Leary.

Yeah, he's a graduate student from Weymouth Mass. He faced 26 shots on the other day, and uh he let 15 get in. So if there's a point of concern maybe for Limestone, it may be at the goalie position. But hey, first one, first game. Let's see what let's see what happens there. Um you know, Guy Bistro for St. Leo, balling out again, started out, three goals and assists. Greg Palmer, our boy, two goals and two assists. Hey, Kevin, get this. A transfer from St. John's, a kid that played high school ball with my son, and his dad was a really, really, really good lacrosse player, all American. Uh kid by the name of Matt Cleary, like I said, St. John's transfer, got two goals in his very first game. So that's the very first run he's seen. Because last year at St. At St. John's he didn't see the thing. He didn't see any run. No. So in his very first game in Division II, Matt scored two goals. So congratulations, Matt. I know you a long time. Good family, good kid. Got his, you know, he's where he belongs.

That's awesome. I did not see Thomas Nealon play. Did you see him in the game? Nealin didn't get any in. Burn. So I wonder if he's in there or if he just on the we'll see. We'll see. I don't know.

Because I had him on the couple of new too much. They had a couple of new kids playing for uh St. Leo. Mike Flores at the X, 18 out of 32. Not too bad. Not too bad. But um face-offs were almost even. Uh extra man opportunities with two for five for both teams. I mean, the you know, it's just limestone's offense, man.

They're just scary good. They are very, very good. We talked about them in the in the top 20 and in the conference preview, and they are stacked and loaded. Yeah, they're even full on offense. Here was a game we didn't have on our list, and I turned to it when I saw the score. I and I watched the fourth quarter, and that's North Greenville against Kataba. Catawba pulls it out and wins 16 to 11. Remember, the Indians' record last year was 3-10, while North Greenville was 10-7. So Coach Murphy in his second season seems to already be making a difference. When you can go up against a really good team like North Greenville and beat them by five. Get these stats, Danny. North Greenville outshot Katawba 53 to 35. And they put 34 on target to Kataaba's 24. So Kataba 24 on goal, and they score 16. That's great efficiency. Yeah. North Greenville also won the battle in the faceoff, winning 23 of 30.

If you see those kind of stats, you think North Greenville wins. However, defensively, Kataba caused 10 turnovers to North Greenville's four, and the Crusaders turned it over 17 times to Kataba's 11. Add into this goalie play. James Crichton for Kataba made 23 saves, where North Greenville's Gabe L Nelson made eight. Yeah.

Difference right there, huh? Yeah. Big difference in the in the goalie play. And then you look at what um the players. I was kind of surprised to see that score. be honest i was very surprised that's why i went and i watched that fourth quarter and they were they played very evenly you know i i i'd probably have to go back to the stats but it may be uh if they weren't even on the goals in the fourth quarter it would have been maybe one more than for north greenfield maybe or maybe one more for for cotabba and then you look at who scored for for cotabba frank citrone had five goals and they outscored the North Greenville eight to two in the second and third hunter Clark had three goals and one assist Garrett Simi had one goal and three assists they're all sophomores or freshmen citrone Clark Seamy I mean he's got young guns scoring against a team like North Greenville. That's interesting now you got to keep an eye on Cataw now with these young guns I think so I mean I think there like I said and we talked about it before they're gonna be much improved 500 team maybe we'll see when you play a team like North Greenville like that really interesting now do you watch the LMU Chawan game?

I watched a little bit of it I watched the beginning of it wow lmu was dominant yeah dominant I didn't think it was gonna be that bad LMU beat Chawan 18 to eight Daniel Pearl the sophomore attack out of Beavers Creek Ohio three goals and six assists Kev. Wow and Rhodes Conroy the 6'1 junior attackman from one of my favorite cities to say Kalamazoo Michigan six goals and one assist are you kidding me uh Seth McKenzie for Chawan had two goals Eric Dosey who we mentioned many times for Chawan uh two goals one assist our boy Eric George was in uh I think he had one assist I think for the game so yeah they struggled but they were close that it was close in the first quarter and then LMU just broke it out. LMU had 52 shots to Chawan's 18. Wow yeah wow LMU man I'm telling you you got to keep an eye on this team they got depth there a little bit coach Joe Wilson has been really working hard to get that team where it needs to be he was on he was on our show two years ago and he knew what he had to do and he said that he was all in and I think his hard work is paying off I mean I did not expect totally agree totally Chow on by 10 like that they would just think I said in our conference preview they were my dark course you have to watch out for me you cannot look past them if you know if you're a line if you're in the sack and you're limestone Lenore Ryan Wingate Anderson Newberry do not look past Lincoln Memorial no they got your lunch then yeah and they're deep they got players now you know they can run mids in they can run attackmen in they can run LSMs in they can run defensemen in so that's a different rail splitter team I think this year and um you know again 18 to 8 that was a it was just a dominant performance congratulations Joe up there in uh down there in Harrogate Tennessee out there in the Tennessee out in the hills uh next up next up for them Virginia State I know they may have a long day against Lincoln Memorial yeah I think they're gonna have a long day to be honest with you yeah but it is a game I want to watch just because it's Virginia State's first game yeah I watched Dominican I watched Dominican the other night and I was like I was like all right though are they on California time like what time are they on but it was perfect I got home from work made myself a sandwich and uh threw on the game.

There we go. All right did you watch Florida Tech Rollins game night game on Saturday? I did here's my notes Danny just really quick Rollins looks like a team on a mission it was an offensive clinic by them and I would I would say Danny go ahead I like to catch a Dorian man that give it a good in goal right also that that's in my other note I this is what I wrote Shahe starts this season where he left off last year goalkeeper of the year. He was pretty good man Florida Tech had some good shots against him and he just stopped them. Well Florida Tech was able to run their offense they were able to work the ball and get shots off but he's just facing a brick wall when you face that Kickstarter yeah it was shot it was four to two after one then it was nine to three at half and you got guys the guys we always talk about Berkman Johnstone and Hanson all score early they have a fast playing offense but you add in other players like Logan Myers who's a sophomore Sam Matson who's a freshman 6'4 Danny 225 he's the diesel he's the diesel with the diesel he's their diesel on the offensive side versus Shahe on the defensive side wow wow Rollins Jack Johnstone six goals one assist Logan Myers sophomore four goals Mikey Bergman two goals two assists Sam Matson freshman two goals it's not just their they're they're seniors they're leaders that can score they moved the ball so well Danny Rollins looks good man they look good they looked really good i i didn't expect anything less i didn't i didn't i didn't think florida tech was gonna give them much of a game i mean they're just stacked yeah i i i think we talked about it when we did the game it was to watch and we said that it would be floor it would be Rollins game I didn't know how much Florida Tech now Florida Tech hopefully they learn something from that they're gonna see him again and this is their first game of the season they did not play poorly they just they didn't they can't match them right now they ran into like the top five team in the country yeah you know so they started off their team you know they started off their season with one of the best teams in the country hands down in division two so yeah yeah you know so hey Rollins look good but it's a long season we'll see what's up yeah they look good and like again Shahe Shahe get you during the goal look really really good to me just looks I agree looks very comfortable back there doesn't he that's the word I was going to use comfortable I mean like he is so smooth it's like it's like riding the bike reading a book something that comes so natural to him whereas you know you and me forget about it and he's just got a confidence in in in between the pipes you know that not a lot of not a lot of goalies carry you know you see them like gig up give up one or two goals you see them like maybe hit the pipe like damn it shy he's like cool and calm man he's like all right one got bad me he ain't getting the next one past me he's like that you know and he's just he looks smooth like we said comfortable and smooth it's gonna be tough to beat a Rollins tour team this year I think yeah I agree okay so there was a game on Sunday I watched I watched Montevalo versus Undy I also watched the Dominican game so I watched both of those the Montevalo game played down there at Montevallo crappy rainy windy weather but you indie just took them to town they Undy won 13 to six they took you indie took a 7-0 lead before the Falcons scored in this with 445 left in the second and it was 7-2 at half I'll tell you Montevallo had their chances but their first game out they continued to turn the ball over with bad passing and UIndy did just the opposite playing playing in the rain sucks though I know but they both were playing in the rain Undy when you saw them making mistakes it's almost like okay now they found their identity they played against Uah they found it in the fourth quarter they continued that for four quarters against Montevalo and Montevalo it was their first game right so yeah so Undy's two and oh uh Dominican of California's two and oh shorter's two and oh wow interesting it's kind of a great kind of a great weekend and and wing gets upset by Florida Southern and once again I tip my cap to coach Ward and his team there you go hey one thing to talk about I saw this on social media and lacrosse reference put out these star stats there's three of them hopefully I can catch them most games are kind of interesting. Team defense went to Coker this week against Emmanuel they had an 8.5% efficiency they only allowed four goals on 47 possessions the offensive star Danny I think you said he's still scoring did you hear him score again he just scored again Zach Terry brick wall award they gave to Michael Simone for 15 saves against Wingate and a 68% save percentage yeah yeah he played well those he played well those were the three star stats from lacrosse reference and D2 I thought those are pretty cool just to to pass out.

All right Danny after that recap of last week let's move on I think there's another good slate of the games coming this week so you want to get into them yeah we got a bunch of good games actually this week coming up yeah I'll start off there's one this Thursday it's Belmont Abbey against Lenore Ryan both teams won their first games Belmont Abbey beat Mars Hill 127 Lenore Ryan beat Barton 18 to 10 is this a bigger test for Lenore Ryan Belmont Abbey was the regular season conference champion in conference Carolinas but Barton is the one that won the tournament championship.

So this is going to be interesting is it are they at the same level as Barton can they give LR a little bit bigger test remember Lenore Ryan had to turn right around against you Indy on Sunday yeah yeah you know Belmont I watched a little bit of the Belmont Abby game the other night they looked pretty good man they did they they did they dominated that game out of the gate they actually dominated the game there was there was nothing there was nothing yet Mars Hill could do really there was nothing they could do very good their offense was starting was clicking they they looked very good now obviously Lenore Ryan is a different team than than than Mars Hill but you're right. But Belmont Abbey always has a tough scrappy team you know last year they had some injuries and stuff and whatnot and you know what they always had a I always thought that Belmont Abbey was one of those teams that you just can't they're gonna give you a game.

Coach Barrett I I almost felt like after watching them that Coach Barrett was like when you fix your handicap in golf so it's it's he's a gamer he was like it's worse than what you really play I think he gave us a bunch of bad notes because the way they were playing is not how he showed it you know four fifths of his roster being freshman or something like that. Remember they played really well together and they both on offense and defense and their goalie who's a freshman Angus Snow maybe don't show it totally in the stats but he made some unbelievable saves.

Yeah he look you know freshman first game you know he's got those jitters you know he's got those so next Saturday Malloy Seton Hill at Malloy I am interested to see this game I want to see where the Lions stand and how Seton Hill comes out against a team that's going to be much improved and a very formidable team I think this year. So I think that's gonna be a really good game.

Yeah I agree. Another one I have just before that on Friday is Bethany against Holy Family. And this because it's the first game ever for the Tigers and coach Noah Morris. They've got a small roster of 21 but they're now out there competing and learning they have to turn around Holy Family turns right around on Sunday to for a match against Wheeling. So there's no rest for this first year program. That's two games out of the gate for them. So interesting yeah uh how about Tiffin and Davenport? I've got them on the list yeah first real game for Tiffin yeah Tiffin's first game in division two so and Davenport was once in these same shoes right they were once their new team Davenport has been climbing the ladder and they'll be going to the GMAC next year. Yeah so and yeah and remember talking to Coach Brown of Tiffin he set the bar high so this will be interesting to see how they come out Davenport's going to you know I think Davenport has obviously the advantage we'll see it'll be a good game to watch another one Danny on Saturday Deuville on Post Post played Wheeling and Wheeling beat them 1511 this is the first game for Deuville and as you remember when we did the preview they are stack they're stacked on attack with Kristen Engelhart step Stefano Evan and Brady Ruffalo and they have death now at midi so I think this will be a really close game should be interesting. Yeah what about do you have Wingate Mercyhurst on your list? Of course yeah I'm just so glad to see this one continue first of all number one yeah two ranked teams all right so that these guys always get after it year after year.

Yes that that's gonna be a good game i gotta watch that game conference preseason tied for number one both of them really I didn't know that yep and they Lewis you know if you look at what I did for the rankings my my top 20 I give the Lewis a slight advantage but they are playing at Meryville and both teams are loaded. And of course one of my players to watch Baden Boyenko attack for Lewis will be in that game. That's a must watch for me. I just hope the weather's not too bad so these guys can play a decent game because sometimes the weather gets yeah pretty pretty nasty up out there you know in the in the winter time especially but you know what it's been kind of mild the last like week or so yeah yeah we'll see I got another GLVC matchup though it's quincy against William Jewell because it's William Jewell's first game and there's another team Quincy that just like Davenport Quincy was there a few years ago too but Quincy really came on last year. I want to see what they do this year. They have good depth with 39 on the roster so I think it's going to be a tough one for William Jewell but it'll be fun to watch I like Quincy in that one.

The last game I've got Danny to go over is next Wednesday Valentine's Day and that's St. Rose against Mercy how does St. Rose come out this year you know they're actually bringing back 41 players out of 49. That's awesome I'm glad to hear that so he's got a lot of depth mercy's new look you know they lost a lot with Keenan Amon and Kipness we've gone through this before but they've got a lot of guys Justin Gerdville TJ Heider Tyler Piatak Jason Kuner last year's game Mercy beat him 21 to 12 I expect this year to be closer.

Hey, bummer, bummer, bummer news at St. Rose. Coach Williams, tell what tell us what happened. What what what did you hear? What did they say to you?

Yeah, uh, I you know, I appreciate you having a time. Um, you know, I I think that, you know, it the news broke pretty suddenly and it kind of came quick. Uh, you know, we we knew from the summer, you know, like all small private schools, you know, not doing super well uh financially, um and and really trying to figure it out. And and actually we were at a team lift and uh we saw a news article break while we were at a team lift, and um, and then from there, um, you know, we heard some things from from administrators, and then um, you know, a couple days later they they had a team or a uh a campus-wide uh town hall where the board of trustees was there and they kind of broke the news. And so it was a little bit of a uh um a whirlwind of information, um, kind of all came at once from from different directions, news outlets and and from administrators and things like that. Um but the biggest thing that they were trying to that they were doing at the time uh was uh was being as transparent as possible. Um and so um it is it is a really a tough time for our campus community and and it is devastating. But um I think that by you know you know looking at our our roster and and and what our other sports are able to do, you're kind of seeing the um the love that the St. Rose, like our students and our coaches and our administrators have for Saint Rose, won by our program sticking together, and then seeing the success of our women's soccer program, our our women's and men's basketball, and and our spring sports are getting ready to have full seasons. And I also think that shows the uh you know the administrators too. You know, they they committed to us having a full and and uh robust spring and and and fully committing to us to be able to compete and and and give our programs and our student athletes the uh the experience that they deserve. So while it is uh tough time and and and and unfortunate, we we are thankful that you know we're able to to finish out this uh this semester um and and and finish on the right note with this group of of young men.

Uh I can explain it. Um, so a few years ago, we uh put uh a clip from your guys' podcast in the warm-up. Uh some guys liked it. Uh kind of got the boys going. And this year, uh hearing with the news of our school shutting down, uh, I think uh fifth year Gabe Nish said you can't kill what's already dead. And I love it. Got the boys fired up. So uh I decided to put uh that clip in. Uh kind of coincides with the fact that the hangover trilogy is a big hit on our team, also. Um actually uh a few of us older guys were hanging out when your uh podcast with Coach Williams came out a few weeks ago. Or the reference to Coach Williams in that warm-up. And uh we heard the quote that Coach Williams texted you guys, and we all just got fired up. So put that right in the warm-up. And the boys liked it, and that's where we're gonna ride with this year.

I love it. I love it. So, Cam, Cam, as one of the guys, I'm sorry, Kevin, as one of the older guys there and the captain, what did you feel when you heard that news? What was your first thought?

Honestly, my first thought was roll with the punches and let's ride. Like uh, we have such a good crew. Um, it was devastating at first, probably took a day or two to settle in. But after those two days, it was we're ready to roll. We got our guys, and we're gonna fight till the very end. Um, I also think one of my original thoughts is like, wow, like selfishly, what an ending. What an ending, because there's a lot of fifth years and seniors on our team, and this can really be a time to make history. So let's just do it.

That's awesome. Uh Eddie, yeah, let me ask you. Uh, you know, like Cam said, Coach Williams texted us, reached out with that let's ride. Has that mentality permeated through the whole locker room? That kind of let's ride mentality, or is it more the seniors, or is that really becoming your mantra?

Uh, I'd say yeah, it's definitely our mantra this year. Um, you know, you could see everybody buying into the little things. Obviously, 8 a.m. lists and conditionings aren't everybody's favorites, but you know, the guys come and they're energetic every day. And obviously, you're not gonna not you're not gonna be the best person every single time you step out on the field or doing anything, but you could tell that the effort is there. Um, and you know, as a fifth year uh being here for so long, uh obviously we know it's our last ride and we don't really want to leave anything on the table. But seeing the younger guys, they realize that they're not just playing for us right now, they're also playing for a future. Um, so you could really sense that urgency and really fighting until fighting until the end.

So, so Owen, let me go to you because this is your last blaze of glory, too, right? As a graduate student, what do you want to see out of this season?

I mean, this year, it's this is a huge team year. We have a lot of depth. Um, we have a lot of potential for the guys that we have on the team. So, I mean, we're really looking to see and try and do as best we can this year. We're gonna give it 110 every single day on the field and off the field when we're in um the weight room and stuff like that. So, I mean, we're just looking to have a lot of fun and finish strong this year as a team.

That's awesome. That's awesome. Noah, let me let me go to you. Um, you were rookie of the year last year in the NE10. You obviously were building something here at St. Rose. Danny asked Cam how did that feel when you first hear it? I want to kind of hear from you how did that feel to you as you were building something here in this program and how were you dealing with it?

Yeah, um, you know, I was kind of mad at first because you know, you commit to a school you know you're gonna play at, you plan to be there for the four years, and then to hear that kind of like you could say, like broke my heart, you know, you're not gonna be with the same guys you just grew a relationship with and stuff. Um, so at first I was kind of mad, and then it was kind of like, let's come back and finish it out with the guys, you know, I started it with. You know, that's that's hard.

That's that's that's that comes from within, man. That starts at home, Noah. You know what I'm saying? Like it just tells the character of a of a young man that you are. And Alex, as the freshman, you're sitting here with all these bigger guys and coach and stuff, and here you are, this young freshman, you commit to St. Rose, any 10, you're gonna be playing competitive across, you're psyched, your first semester, you kind of screw up a little bit, you're probably the grades weren't probably so bad.

Um, you know, you obviously pick a school because you want to go there for four years, and you know, things hit the fan and things change, but um, I love every one of these kids like my brothers. Um, you know, the teams are just a big family, everyone's really welcoming, and we're all boys, and I'm glad I'm here for sure.

I also inherited a great core group of guys that uh, you know, without them, um, you know, we wouldn't be able to continue to find these guys of uh of character and that identify with what we're trying to do. You know, you guys, you guys know the Brand of Lacrosse and what we're all about here, you know, the blue-collar gritty with the you know competing for a championship, you know, Brand of Lacrosse, and these guys bought into it, you know, and and we're fortunate um to have these guys stay and and to have this group of uh upperclassmen um and and returners help you know steer the ship as as uh as we go here.

You know what? Again, a testament to you know, a lot of kids today, I don't care what anybody says. The kids are soft, you know, shit don't go their way. And when you get hit with something like, hey man, school's closing, this is the last semester, this is the last ride, that's a lot of adversity. And man, your kids stay, your kids stayed. That's just an amazing thing.

We we talked about that when we did the games to watch this week, which, oh, by the way, you guys, one of them is we're watching your first game against Mercy. That's on our books, 14 February. And what we I said, and I'm still shocked at it, that out of 49 players that you used to have on your roster, you still have 41. That is crazy. After everything, you know, when you hear that, I mean, that is a testament to what has been built there. But let's move on. I want to move on, and and anyone can chime in. You guys have a tough schedule, it's not just the NE10, it's your out of reference.

It'd be great to you know finally assert that we are the team we say we are this year, and then always St. Mike's. You know, there's no game that really gets me going more than St. Mike's. You know, whether they're coming here, we're going there, we're giving them a game every single time. And it's it's the type of game that you want to run through a wall.

So definitely those two. They're a good team, St. Mike's, too. That's it's that's gonna be a battle, I'm sure. Alex, is there anyone anything, or are you just so excited that to get out there and play against Mercy the first time? Or is there any games that you've got uh circled?

Um honestly, I'm just glad to be here. Um, I'm rolling with my boys, so whoever you know who's gonna um I don't know, give us a hard time or whoever we want to beat, which is everyone. I'm honestly whatever they say. Like Eddie said, St. Mike is alphi, um, you know, Cam's with Bentley and St. A's. I'm there too. I'm with them.

Uh I mean, of course, everyone wants you know a national championship, but short term, you know, we want to be able to make the conference tournament and be able to play in that for you know something we haven't really uh ever played for, or at least like you know, none of our guys have. So I feel like that's a big thing we're looking forward to.

I mean, one of our big things, we have nothing to lose. It's our last year as a school, as a team. There's nothing to lose. We're gonna go out there and throw everything at the teams we play. There's nothing after this, so we're gonna throw it all out and have fun doing it.

Like I'm excited to watch you guys play mercy now because the the just the attitudes and the head and where their head is at is just amazing to me, considering everything that's going on. I appreciate that. Yeah, we do, we do. And uh, you know, it's it's definitely not easy every day. Um, you know, we there's a lot of uh distractions that we could, you know, rule one thing out, you know, and uh, you know, say uh you know our class schedules are are are are are too tough, or you know, there's a lot of distractions, or or what's the point, but but these guys they stay focused and grounded. And honestly, like going off to practice right now is is the best part of my day with these guys. And um and and so it's you know, we're excited. We're far we're we're not we're not fully there yet. You know, we're we're still working hard. And um you know, we we scrimmaged Springfield this weekend and learned a lot from that and and are are you know taking uh you know taking them one day at a time. That's our mentality right now. Uh, you know, we had Springfield success scheduled, uh circled on the calendar. We got an uh another scrimmage with a local D3, uh, you know, Russell Sage College on Wednesday, and and then uh we'll learn from that experience and then and then flip the page to uh to mercy um and be ready for February 14th. But uh but absolutely, you know, I can't speak enough about these guys and and and Kevin, like we talked about in the uh 10 preview uh write-up, you know, and you know, I you know when we when we were going back and forth I was joking around with you that I should have sent you an update of where we were for when you when you finished, but I can't speak highly enough, and I I just can't, you know, I just want this program's story to be shared about what these guys have been through over the last four years, you know, and on top of COVID and a coaching change, you know, buying into that. And then, you know, last year having their uh, you know, their one of their best friends pass away unexpectedly two weeks before school starts, and having to to battle that to now hearing that they're they're in the school that they all believe in is is closing. It's a testament to the will of these young men. And um, like I said, going out to practice is like it's the best part of my day. And so I'm I'm I'm excited to be here. And um, their commitment just makes it, you know, that much more enjoyable and and ready for us to continue on here, you know.

Yeah, it's it shows it shows a lot of character of the men that they are, but more of what Coach Williams is doing there. I think that has a lot to do with it. You know, he's a good guy, man, and these kids like him and what he's been able to do in just a short period of time at uh there and you know where the school was going, at least in the lacrosse world, they were going in the trending in the upward direction. And you know, they play in that tough any ten, but to hear the news that that it was closing, it was uh I guess it's not surprising because we've had a few close. And I I think you know that COVID year had a lot to do with, you know, a lot to do with these small, tinier schools and finances. Yeah, I think some of these schools are having a a little bit of difficulty digging themselves out of that financial hole.

I agree. I think the uh amazing thing about just talking with that team, those guys, and Coach Williams is kind of what you said. It's and we've talked about this with other coaches. There's the lacrosse side to everything, and that's what we focus in on. But there's a bigger side when they're student athletes. And we're all these guys, yeah, these kids are going to school, Kev. These kids are going to school. What they've become from a maturity and kind of a vision of how they look at things. You know, they can they can sit and they can bitch and moan and say, Woe is me. They lost a dear friend and a player last year, two weeks before the school the season started. Most of these guys like Eddie Baker, Cam Smith, Owen Sweeney, they had to deal with COVID also. They had to deal with all that stuff. And then Williams coming in as coach, it's a testament to what they've built and what those guys have done not only just off the field as much as on the field.

First of all, I've got two other goaliers to shout out, both freshmen making an impact, and that's Tommy Peer of Alabama Huntsville and Angus Snow of Belmont Abbey, the next Sully for them. The next Sully. One could only hope. It was not the stats. I'm not even checked, I did not even check their stats at the end of the game. Didn't look at the save percentages, how many saves, but you look two freshmen between the pipes for their respective teams, and some of the saves they made, they are guys to watch. So I shout them out. They had great games.

I was texting with Devin over the weekend and got caught up on Axel. This kid has gone through more stuff at age five than most adults. He continues to battle through. Devin even sent me a picture of Axel at the clinic this weekend getting chemo. He is one badass cancer warrior. And you know I'm a veteran, right? I don't use that word warrior lightly. I don't use it in sports. I will not use it. I very rarely say battle when you talk about games. In this case, for a kid that age and what he's done, he he continues to show out how he fights. And I just want to give him a shout out and let him know that we're still thinking of it.
