Intro
SPEAKER_07Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's Lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stentrim, and with me as always is our ambassador for D2 Lacrosse, Danny Moran.
SPEAKER_01The Ambassador. Kevin, how's it going tonight in Northern Virginia, my friend? How's it going?
SPEAKER_07It's going well. I am actually here, but I had to say that I had to pick I've used Ambassador for you before. I had to pick it again tonight because you will need to channel your diplomatic skills as we bring in our second guest analyst this season. I have no diplomacy, Kevin. You know that. Look, we've had him on before, not as a player, but as a dad. But he was a player. Yes, he was. A good one. Damn good one, too. Yes, he was. I shouldn't say arch nemesis, but certainly a competitor in the sack against Wingate, and they've got a game this week. So we thought it was a perfect time to bring him in as a guest analyst. So let's bring him in. Devin Spilker, all the way from the West Coast, as in Alaska for tonight. I got music for you, Dev.
SPEAKER_03I appreciate it, boys. Nice to see you. Thanks for having me on, Kat.
SPEAKER_01Oh, coming all the way from Fairbanks, Alaska. Well, he's in Kodiak. Are you in Kodiak?
SPEAKER_03Kodiak. I'm in Kodiak. Yeah, I got up here a couple days ago and be in Anchorage at the end of the week and uh get back to the Pacific Northwest where I live in uh Newburgh, Oregon, and Wine Country of Oregon now.
SPEAKER_07I love it so how are you, my friend?
SPEAKER_03I'm doing great, doing well. It's uh across season right in the middle of it. So you know, weekends are hectic with the family with three kids. Uh my daughters are are uh eleven and nine, and my son six, and uh the girls are playing, so I'm now coaching girls across as well.
SPEAKER_07No, you were texting us this weekend. You were saying we're kind of getting ready for the podcast, kind of letting you know what games we're watching. You're like, I'll have to catch them later. I've got to go coach my daughter's game, and you're three hours behind us, so that's like the key time, right? Like, you know, there's you you missed that middle, that that middle afternoon, which is probably morning for you when you've got all your games.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's always tough that I can't watch if Lime's son's playing at noon. Uh that's nine o'clock here, and I'm coaching across usually from like 8 a.m. a.m. till to one in the afternoon, usually every Saturday between both girls and my son. So um, you know, I catch a couple of these games in the afternoon that we're on that we're gonna review and cover a little bit. So looking forward to that, and uh appreciate you guys having me on and and uh super excited.
SPEAKER_07We're excited to have you, man. We have to ask, how's Axel doing? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03We are uh we got some really exciting news uh couple weeks ago. He's actually got me caught up saying it, but um he will ring the he will have his last treatment uh April 24th, and he will ring the bell on May 2nd, which will be almost three years of him going through cancer treatment. So we are on the back stretch.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, that's awesome. Dude, I just got I just got chills. I just got chills, the hair on my arms just stood up. That's the most wonderful news. You had posted a couple of weeks ago. Can't wait to have the son ring the bell, and I post it back. I hope he rings it so hard the damn bell falls off the wall, and your wife hit the heart button. Hey, that's the best news ever. Congratulations on that news, Devin.
SPEAKER_03He's my he's my hero, man. He's unbelievable. The resistance and and not like not given any resistance and just his drive and and even like the way he treats the nurses to the doctors, and he's just he I mean, you know, to take oral chemo daily, um, you know, put on anesthesia on a weekly basis, have other people come on. We had a real rough go a couple months ago where he was an ICU because of he had both flus and pneumonia, which isn't great when you also have a weak immune system from the chemo and the cancer, right? So um he's just amazing, and we're uh you know, we're using all that. And uh there's a couple things my wife and I are doing. We're we're you know, giving back and helping other families. Um there's a couple there's a little farm that we go to with a bunch of families that we talk to, the the parents is uh you know, they're they're just starting treatment with their kids, so we can kind of help them, you know, how were our experiences and how can we help and that type of thing. So um just trying to use it, turn it into a positive, and that's all we did. It's positive mindset, it's accurate like we are as athletes, for my wife and I both being college athletes, and uh so we got through it. I can't believe it's it's almost through.
SPEAKER_07And he's a long it's it's a marathon, not a sprint, and that's what makes it even more difficult because just like a marathon, you go through some good times and you go through a lot of bad times. I've done 12 marathons, I can tell you. And I'm also a cancer survivor, so I can tell you I know from that perspective too. So we are ecstatically excited for your family and especially for Axel. So that's thank you guys.
SPEAKER_03I appreciate you asking. We are uh on the other end, and and now it's uh he's uh he's gonna be doing great things. I mean, if the kid is when what he what what else is gonna scare you when you've gone through what he has and you should see my little lefty already on the bounce back every day out back to me. Six years old. Six years old catching and catching the ball all day long already. So he's gonna beat all his dad's records.
SPEAKER_07That's what he wants to do.
SPEAKER_03That's great. You know what they say? They're made to be broken, and it'd be amazing for that happen.
SPEAKER_07That's right. That's right. All right. Well, let's get into it, Danny, with your top
Top 10 Roundup
SPEAKER_07ten.
SPEAKER_01Oh, Kev, what a week we had again in the top ten. And this is your top ten roundup. All right, number one, Tampa beat number 14, Emory Riddle 13-4, remain undefeated, and face Florida Southern next. Number two, Limestone Saints beat Catawa 13-8 in kind of a tighter matchup than I thought it would be. And the Saints just keep rolling. They only have one loss, and they face a pretty pissed-off Wingate Bulldog uh team next. Wounded animal. Number three. Number three, St. Anslum beat AIC 19-6, play Southern New Hampshire, then Pace. And uh St. Ace is 8-0, kid. They're just balling along, man. Number four, Seton Hill beat Northwood rather handily, 26-5. The Griffiths go to 12-1, and face Frostburg next in conference play. Number five, a Delphi beat number 20, Assumption, 16-5. And they're playing pace right now as we record this, and they're up 11-4 with four minutes left in the third. Yeah. Pace.
SPEAKER_07I remember watching it out of the corner of our eye, by the way.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, pace made a little run at the end of the end of the half, but uh Delphi's. The Delphi's putting it on them now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Number six, Flagler in Peach Belt Play beat Monte Valo 16-9. The Saints are 12-1. They look very good, and they face Lander in Peach Belt Play next. Number seven, LR beat Tusculum rather handily, 25-9. The Bears are 11-2 and face Coker next. Number eight, Pace beat number 12 Bentley in a kind of a tight game, 12-7. And again, they're playing the Delphi right now. Number nine, Wingate lost to number 10, Anderson, 15-13. The dogs fall to 11-10-3, and they face the Limestone Saints next Saturday in Gaffney, and I'll be there. And number 10, Anderson beat number nine, Wingate, 15-13, and they face Mars Hill next. And Anderson is 10-3, and that's your round up. Yeah, and a couple of quick scores to note, Kev and Devin Malloy beat Robert Swesley in an ECC play. Yeah. And they faced Mercy in two weeks. Um winner of that game would probably have the top seed in the ECC tourney. Uh North Greenville, wow, beat Barton 19-8 and is undefeated in Conference Carolinas. We'll probably have the top seed in that in that conference for the tournament. Number 17, Mercy beat Frostburg 9-7 in a tight game ECC matchup. Lynn making a move in the Sunshine State conference, huh? Beating Florida Tech and Florida Southern while number I had that line.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, you're exactly right.
SPEAKER_03It's all Florida games. That's pretty big.
SPEAKER_01And and while number 15, St. Leo has dropped four in a row. Yeah. I mean, St. Leo was in the driver's seat two weeks ago.
SPEAKER_07Well, and here's what's funny, too, is like we talked about this last week, Danny. We talked about the ones that are all in two and two. And if you asked me last week, I would never I thought Lynn could go two and oh. I thought St. Leo would at least go one and one, and I wasn't sure what Rollins was going to do. Rollins went two-0, beating St. Leo and then Florida Tech. And it was St. Leo that went 0-2.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Rollins kind of snuck into that second spot there in the Sunshine State Conference. Leo kind of shot themselves in the foot. I felt that out outside of Tampa, it was St. Leo with the best, and then they just dropped four in a row. Yeah. Another score, number 16, Colorado Mesa, 22 to 10 over Dominican to California. Mesa's 10-2, Kev. Yeah. And 5-0 in conference. And I think they're in the driver's seat in the RMAC, and uh they might be on a collision course with Flagler. We shall see. And those are just a couple of games to note.
SPEAKER_07I've got a few others. Lewis beat you Indy. Not totally unexpected, 9-5. Keeps them kind of in the run, but we'll talk about the other games.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they've fallen a little bit, it seems like at the beginning of the year.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, but we we'll we'll be talking, I think, about another game I've got in my games to watch, which is Maryville Rockhurst later on. The other one I want to point out, two others. Mount Olive dominated Emmanuel 25 to 10. I point this out because I was a game to watch for me last week. I watched some of it. Manual's just not there yet. They came, they were close in the first quarter, first half a little bit, but Mount Olive just kept on pouring it on. So that's one game to point out. The last one I have to point out. Holy Family beats Felician 18 to 12. Why am I saying this? Holy Family, in their second season, starting to make some noise. They're above 500 in conference. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Where are they located again?
SPEAKER_07They're up, I think, in Ohio. Oh, Holy Family? Are they Ohio? You could be right. I thought they were out in Ohio.
SPEAKER_03Adding another Division II program. It's, you know, um, already making some noise is great. Uh Division II Lacrosse has grown, so so rare.
SPEAKER_07So we're both wrong. They're in Philadelphia PA.
SPEAKER_03Oh, well, there you go. That's a that's that's a hotbed for lacrosse, man.
SPEAKER_07Split the difference from New Jersey to Ohio, you get to Pennsylvania. That's all I can say.
SPEAKER_03You were both wrong about that, all right?
SPEAKER_01Wouldn't be the first time. Wouldn't
Week in Review
SPEAKER_01be the first time.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so the the game, you know, one other game that I've um uh reviewed in um that post virtual bridgeport.
SPEAKER_07Um, yeah, let's talk about that. Let's start that in our week our real weekend review. What do you think of that game, Devin? I watched some of that one too. What do you think of that? I watched it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, look, uh, it was a tight game earlier, and he got to watch uh uh bits and pieces of it in between uh playing uh coaching coaching some games on the weekend, but um you know, Post made a big run at the end the end of the quarter. Uh I mean that that was what was obvious. Um between that, you know, they couldn't stop number 21. Uh the guy Robbie, he was seven for nine, which we're talking about shooting percentages there, Joey. That's right. Excuse me. Uh seven for nine, it's seventy-eight percent, right? I mean, that's pretty that's pretty impressive. Um the face-offs were kind of even a little bit, but um you know, the big thing too, uh the one other thing I saw from Bridgeport, they didn't have a lot of people in the field. I feel like they're uh they're athletic. It was a well-thought game. And if you look at the box score, too, I mean, they had 10 people with points. So, you know, spreading the rock, but post just was too much for them at the end of the game, is what I saw. Right?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it was a critical game for the tournament you know, chances, what they're trying to do. And like you said, it was close the first half, and four-two after one, nine, six and a half, twelve, ten after three. And then there was a six-one run, like you just said, six-one run for for post, and they just closed it out.
SPEAKER_03And that was most of the game that I was watching, because it was done once my games were done, so I popped it up and was was checking it out. A big, big difference in winners and losers in this uh game of a cross, you know, especially when it's tight and you have all these athletes now. Um, you know, this game was taking care of the rock. I mean, the turnovers, fail clears, bad passes. When you got a two-goal game playing against a good team, you cannot turn the ball over and have unforced turnovers, period.
SPEAKER_01100%. One thing I noticed about the game, the first thing I noticed it was ice and and slush on the field in the beginning. I was like, what the hell is on the field? It looked like white pieces of paper, you know, from like on the screen. And then I'm seeing splashes. I'm like, it's slush. It's like snowing in Connecticut. So like like uh Devin said, you know, each team went toe-to-toe in that first quarter. Robbie McGrean buried two for post and the kid James Napoli.
SPEAKER_03Um James had three goals for the Long Island kid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he played he played summer ball with my son Joe. He's a good player, you know. He's part he's got triplets. He's got two twin brothers on the team as well as triplets.
SPEAKER_03Whoa, that's pretty cool. I mean, we had we had a lot of we always had sex of brothers in the lime center for the four years I was there, and that's always neat, you know. Family's number one, right?
SPEAKER_01100%. So Napoli buried two for the night. So Will Byrne buried one along with teammate Hunter McCarty, and the Eagles led 4-2 after one. Bridgeport started the second pretty strong, scoring two quick goals to tie it up at four. McGrain and McCarty scored two within 25 seconds. McCarty scored on a man up, giving Post a 7-4 lead. And uh a little bit of the pace started to get a little faster, started to get a little going, and these two teams were going at it, kind of trading goals back and forth, like Devin said. And then Post went off on that six-goal run in the fourth quarter. And you know what, though? One thing that stood out to me was uh goalie Aiden Waller in goal for the Eagles of Post. He had 12 saves, but man, he made some big saves. Big saves, yeah. Critical time.
SPEAKER_03You want your goalie to make the saves he's supposed to, but if he can come up with a couple big critical, like inside tight, whatever, it makes a huge difference.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the confidence goes up, you know. It was like, you know, he Bridgeport was ever able to get their looks. They were able to work their offense.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I think they're a solid team. They're very good.
SPEAKER_07I think, Devin, what you pointed out, you look at some of the team stats, the two that point out you mentioned turnovers, so 18 for post to 24 for Bridgeport. Six six turnover difference, not huge. But ground balls. So you talk about other turnovers that may not even have ground balls. 45 for post, 31 for Bridgeport.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's the same. That's that's that that's it right there.
SPEAKER_07Those little things make the difference, and could have helped that that five that 6'1 uh run that that Post went on.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that was the for sure the difference. And you know, us watching this, it's been more and more watching on the teams. I mean, before this, I you know, I watched the Limestone game or whoever the top two teams are playing or something, but digging in to do this analysis with you guys, you know, going and watching the team, it's I like it's really neat to see how much depth and talent that someone like Bridgeport has, you know, on the lower pole. It just shows how much Divinity has grown in the 20 years since I've been out of it, right? It's unbelievable.
SPEAKER_01You're absolutely right. You know, when we started this podcast, I only watched my kids play and then a couple of the good teams, you know. But as the podcast, we started the podcast, I had to start watching teams I never saw before. And I was starting to see the difference in like just how each team is growing, and they're just the the resources are coming to the schools, the schools are buying in, the kids are buying in, the coaches are getting better, the you know, you get a good size of the rosters, too.
SPEAKER_03It's not like they got 25 guys on the sideline, guys, right? You're talking every team's got 40 guys, 36 guys on the sideline, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. There's teams that would come out their first year with 35, 36, 37 guys on their roster, like in their in their first year on the program. So for Bridgeport, they dropped a 4-7 and 1-4 in conference. Uh the Eagles are 7-5 overall. They go 4-2. That final of the game was 18-11. The Eagles. For the Bridgeport Purple Knights, my man James Knappley with three, James Goodrich with two, Kevin Draum with one, Steven Trauma with two, Martin Thomas, Lanowski each with one. Connor Cullen was 12 for 24 at the dot. Thomas Ryan, seven ground balls, four caused turnovers. Good day on the defensive side for Thomas Ryan. And uh in Casey Dmachowski, 19 saves in between the pipes for Bridgeport. And for the Eagles, Robbie McGrain, what a day. Seven goals, two assists. He was lighting shit up, kid.
SPEAKER_03I know, dude, right? That's what I said, man. 80% shooting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and get this. Hunter McCarty, four goals, two assists, seven ground balls, three calls turnovers.
SPEAKER_03That's the guy. That's the that's your guy you want. Every team you need to have. He does all the dirty stuff, right? And he gets those score goals, clearing balls, turnovers. He's your 2-8 minute that you want all day long.
SPEAKER_01He was sick. I was like really impressed at his play. Uh Ryan Denkey, three goals and four assists, dishing out dimes. All these a lot of these goals were assisted by Post. Uh, Leighton Cook, two goals, two assists. Will Bryan, two goals, three assists. Jackson Holden, 17 for 27 at the dot, not too bad. And here's what was cool. It was senior day for Post, all right? So they start, they started in goal, senior, Nolan Martin. The sideline went nuts when he got in and and like started paping the pipes. So there must be like an insight. Maybe the kid doesn't play that much.
SPEAKER_07That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01One of those spiritual leaders of the team, you know.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, that's cool.
SPEAKER_01And when he got in and started papping the pipes, the place went nuts. He played two minutes, they brought him out, gave him a huge ovation.
SPEAKER_07You know, the one of those things we talked about this before, Danny, right? You can contribute other ways to your team, and that shows you what he contributed to his team. It wasn't so much game day, but it's every time off the field or during practice that he's making a difference.
SPEAKER_01And fellas, his teammates went nuts. They went nuts for him. So he must be like their spiritual guru guy, you know.
SPEAKER_03But they took Go ahead, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01No, go ahead, go ahead, go ahead.
SPEAKER_03Uh it brings brings it to uh uh a memory, a story memory of one of the guys on the sideline that never really got to touch the field. Um and there's one game where I think it was when we played Radford, we were actually playing Division I team, and uh I was having an off game. We were down by a couple um late on late into the game, and come on the sideline, he grabbed me, he's like, I did not run all those sprints and do all this work to watch you blow this damn game, stoker. Get your ass together, you know what I mean? Like the guys in the sideline mean just as much. And when you're practicing, you're going at it every day, your blood, sweat, tears. It's such a family, especially if you got that bond and you, you know, and you know the guys are working up extra hard, even though they're not getting on the field, you know? And like this is a guy that really even didn't even get on the field, even when we were crushing Lee McRae, right? Like you know, one of those guys. Right? So, um, you know, you gotta have it, and I love hearing those types of stories what it's all about. That's what I miss. Man, that's what I miss. It's why I coach and still play with the boys when I can. Might not be able to walk for a day or two, but still got by, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so from when Nolan Martin came out, everybody was like high five in him and stuff. He only he only played two minutes, and then they put Aiden Waller in. And like I said, Waller had 12 saves and some really, really big, like dramatic saves at crucial times. So, you know what? That was a pretty damn good game, right?
SPEAKER_03I man, I was impressed. I liked it. It was a good game.
SPEAKER_07Sure. Okay, let's move on. Let's talk. I think, Devin, you watched this too. I don't know, Danny, if you caught this one. Westminster against Concordia. Did either of you watch that game? No, I didn't.
SPEAKER_03I watched that's the game I watched the most, actually. So I'll see you.
SPEAKER_07So Concordia, yeah, Concordia wins 14-8. What'd you think of the game, Devin?
SPEAKER_03I mean, a lot like how this first game, it was a little easy, pretty even in the beginning. Um, six-on-six, they battle in between the lines where Westminster struggled a little bit, just like we're talking, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know, clearing the ball, um, unforced turnovers, um, you know, the big thing too, and this is uh, you know, it shows you how bad they did because on turnovers to take care of the rock, um, you know, with uh Westminster, you know, one other was the face-offs. I mean, they went 71% of the kid, and he had, I think it was 14 round balls.
SPEAKER_05Wow.
SPEAKER_03The face-off kid, Cade Poe is his name.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he is good.
SPEAKER_03Kid's legit. That's a legit. And I was getting that the face-off kid's legit. Um, you know, and then uh Max uh texture had uh five goals on eight shots. So again, talking shooting percentages, right? 63 or whatever percent did really well. Um uh, you know, and then you go and look at um, you know, I hate seeing this too, where a guy has 12 shots of one goal, right? I mean, you got you gotta you gotta do a little better there. But overall, um, it was the second half that fourth quarter, you know, they just kind of ran out of juice, and you you turn the ball over, you're not gonna win the game, right?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, like you said, them really interesting. Westminster held the lead after one. It was four to three. CUI then went on a six-goal run. They were down by three. They were down by three. They go at one to four to one, then they go by that six-goal run. Now they're up by three, seven to four in the second. It was eight, five at half, and then just like you said, I think this is the middle of the field, and you can see it on the team stats for shots. Because uh CUI at 51 to Westminster's 21. Westminster went scored first in the third, but CUI then went on another big round. It was two rounds. And uh and that and just pull away, and that was the difference. I mean, shot, you know, sh the shots 51 to 21, shots on goal twenty-six to sixteen. I mean, those are the things you start to see that say they had a lot more possession. Every time I was watching that game and watching another one, I'd go back to the game, it seemed like all the time Concordia had it on the offense, their offensive side of the field.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you can tell, and I I I know a good amount of kids on Westminster because we we sent uh my organization uh called Team Oregon that I coach and director of out here, um, which wasn't was a Madlax. Now we we have our own organization with the West Coast. We're not battling with the Madlax crew on on players for national. But um, so I know some kids in that team, and you know, so I was pretty much cheering for Westminster. You know, I I know some kids. I know a really, really good goalie's going there next year um that had some D1 looks too. But um, and you could just it just not taking care of the route because making me it just drives me crazy, you know. Like you do all this great job on defense, clearly gotta clear the ball, and you you don't have an attacker in the top breaking up for the ball, or you know, you're settling up top instead of getting it behind, and the guy gets raped and they go down and score. And it's like it's like so many of these little things you that you gotta take, it all adds up. That's what I guess I'm trying to say, right? Like if you have four or four little things go wrong in a period, it's gonna be a run for another team 100%. And you gotta you gotta stop it before the floodgates open, you know?
SPEAKER_01That goes back to what you said before, how the div, you know, division two, the the the rot the the the level of play. Like one mistake, and the other team's gonna take advantage of that, you know. At least I did actually watch this game. I I thought I'd I watched so many lacrosse games this week, and I did. You just don't have your your notes are all messed up today, uh Danny.
SPEAKER_07Got a lot going on.
SPEAKER_03I got scribble and I can still read mine. I don't know what's going on. Must be that shirt he's wearing, you know? Yeah. Go dogs, go dogs.
SPEAKER_01No. No, that was a really good game, too. But man, you know, CUI at the end of the game just like broke it open in that second half and kind of never looked back after that.
SPEAKER_03I mean, they're they're interesting, they're an interesting team because, you know, I mean, you got them, Colorado Mesa out there, right?
SPEAKER_07Um uh, you know, Dominican and Adam State and then Westminster.
SPEAKER_03And yeah.
SPEAKER_07I'll tell you, Concordia, same thing we talked about this last last year, but this year too. Concordia coming out of being a club team, and so is the same as Dominican, Concordia actually winning their club turn championship before they came in. So they had a lot of pickers.
SPEAKER_03They're a legit team. I mean, that's what's saying, watching. That face off guy, I mean, like, I mean, hey, man, you want to transfer? You want to transfer? I mean, like he's kids.
SPEAKER_07They struggled against Westminster and Colorado Mesa last year until it got to the tournament.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_07And the same thing's happened this year. That well, they beat Westminster twice now, but they are climbing the ladder in the RMAC. And I, you know, I agree with you, Danny, and we'll probably talked about this in the conference, just as we go over conference tournaments. Colorado Mesa, you know, obviously is the team to beat, but CUI is playing them tight too.
SPEAKER_03So it's playing tight, man.
SPEAKER_01Hey, CUI is at 500. They're six and six. It's a second year program, okay? Second year. And they're five and two in conference. Westminster drops to one and four. Right.
SPEAKER_07So that's surprising to me.
SPEAKER_01So, you know what? CUI is taking that second spot now over Westminster in the RMAC. They are that second group, you know. Yeah. I think they're probably going to wind up playing um Mesa. C UI probably probably gonna play Mesa in that RMAC little tournament. Yeah, before they go play a peach belt. And then the winners of those will play the peach belt winners, because neither of them.
SPEAKER_03What was uh you had the numbers there? What was the turnovers on in this game and ground balls?
SPEAKER_01Turnovers, uh 22 for Westminster, 15 for CUIs.
SPEAKER_03There you go. I mean, so seven, I mean, that's a big seven, that's three goals. You know, I mean, every other turnover is a goal, is what I try to tell my players, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, ground balls 42 to 32 and shots 51 to 31. So CUI kind of dominated the game.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Uh well, it was that second half, and it's the same thing, right? Like people talk about it. That's the name of the game. That's what happens.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. Uh, Max Texter, like you mentioned before, five goals and one assist. You know where he's from? The junior MIDI. Where is he from? He's a hometown boy, Irvine, California, in case you didn't know.
SPEAKER_03That's cool. And I'll check in his games. I mean, he had he didn't play great against the Delphi. A couple teams that were really good. I think they shut him down or or slid to him or whatever, right? Um, because that's the one thing, too. You play good teams, you gotta have multiple guys that can score that even though you're getting the best player, right? I mean, you for like for us, it was either putting me or Carlson, you had to, you gotta decide what guy you're gonna put it on, and then it didn't matter, right? We're we're dominating anyways. It's the difference between really good teams and average teams.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Also for CUI, Chad McFadden, two goals, one assist, Brody McDonald, two goals, Barnes, Kuhl, Caresi, Chara Poom, and Parker Teal, each with one. Uh Colin O'Connor, five ground balls and one cause turnover, and Daniel Yang in between the pipes for CUI had eight saves, and he only faced 26 shots on goal. Uh for Westminster, Camden Rossi with two goals, Sean Granola with two, Gunther Dahl Stanley, and Duke DeVault. Like that name. Duke DeVault. Uh each. Yeah. Sounds like uh like a drummer in a rock band.
SPEAKER_03You know, it's Pro Dreams Pro Driams drummer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh each of those guys had one, and Christian Jones had 12 saves. Uh so CUI looks pretty darn good in the RMAC. What do you think, fellas?
SPEAKER_07Yeah. I I'm interested to see what they do in the tournament.
SPEAKER_03I think we're I I would say this. I bet they're a couple years away from from winning some playoff games. Man, maybe you know that you're gonna be able to there's a lot of talent on the West Coast, man. I mean, there really is. And there's a lot, you look, maybe obviously not as much as Philly or Maryland or New York, but there's a lot of kids from California playing in a big division one, two or three teams right now that are getting playing time.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, man, absolutely, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03And that's the same thing, same thing with like Westminster pool. And I mean, they're gonna start getting more coming from from you know, even Oregon and Washington. There's I mean, we got we got some talent, talented kids, so um you you can't teach an athlete, you can teach an athlete to be a lacrosse player, right?
SPEAKER_05That's right.
SPEAKER_03It's kind of hard to teach kind of hard to to make somebody an athlete, but if they are, you can teach lacrosse, right?
SPEAKER_01I I heard a coach say, give me an athlete and I'll make them a lacrosse player. You know?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, 100%.
SPEAKER_07So okay, let's move on to Montevallo and Flagler. I know you watched this game, Danny. Don't tell me you didn't.
SPEAKER_01You didn't?
SPEAKER_07That's the one game I didn't watch.
SPEAKER_03Did you watch it, Devin? I did not. I did not. Let me go through it quickly. I'm gonna pull the box up and let you do it.
SPEAKER_07Okay, so Flagler wins at 16-9. This was a critical peach belt matchup. Now, what's interesting was it wasn't as critical as I thought it was gonna be because Monte Valo lost to Lander in their first peach belt matchup. Flagler jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one. And there was 9-3 at half. Flagler. Saints were in total control. It was 12-4 after three. This is gonna sound familiar to you, Danny, a little bit, because we're gonna get back to this. Uh there's like three games, I say. There are teams that start to fight back, and then they ha by the time they start fighting back, they have little to no room for error. Yeah. And this is the thing.
SPEAKER_03Or you run out of the, you know, the excitement.
SPEAKER_07You just run, yeah, you're you're you're climbing so much, it takes so much energy. 12-4 after three. Falcons then come out and score three quick ones in the fourth, so it's 12-7 with 13-18 to play. They make it 12-8.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_07So they're climbing back in before the Saints respond. So this is the time I say, You've got about ten minutes left. Remember that time, Danny, ten minutes, because it's the same thing that happened to Wingate when we get to the Wingate Anderson game. They started coming back in ten minutes, right? A little too late. Look, they looked like they were coming back, but but the Saints just put the pedal to the medal after that, and that's when they score outscored them. Three more goals to basically won. And that the that one goal, 13 to 8, when they scored 13 to 8 around 10 minutes, that just sealed the deal. Yeah. And I think you go back to team stats, once again, the critical one, because most of them were close, were turnovers. Flagler had 18, Montevallo had 28.
SPEAKER_03See, I mean, 10. That's a huge difference.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So four flags.
SPEAKER_03And then what's the ground ball? What's the ground ball count?
SPEAKER_07Oh, I don't have that listed. I think that was close, though. I thought that one was close before I saw. That's why I didn't list it. It was within a few, you know, it wasn't huge.
SPEAKER_03There's a Limestone alumni uh that coaches at Montebello right now, assistant.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um Collins, right? Yeah, it's a Collins.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna be I'm gonna be meeting his mom this Saturday at the Gaffney.
SPEAKER_03Well, you she's an amazing lady. You know, obviously I know her. You know, we're pretty good. She's uh great, great. I mean, they get all the games, they're super diehards, and uh, you know, I mean, um, having multiple kids that go to school at the same school, just like me and my brother, you know, and then my parents my parents are the same way, and you know, they they they still have a group of parents that get together once every couple years, all the limestone old and go, you know, hang out and beers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's great, man. That's great. Yeah, so I'm gonna be meeting Kathleen this Saturday.
SPEAKER_07I met her back when uh after we uh interviewed her son as a on a player spotlight when Wingate played limestone in the NCA tournament. Nice back in the day. You were you were in between players at that point, Wingate. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So Collins is at Montevallo now. He's been coaching a couple years now, right? Two, three guys. Okay, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And they're a newer program, right? I mean, uh I mean they're on the newer side.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, they're on the newer side. They're a good team. They are a good team. The Peach Belt doesn't have any slackers, really, although UAH not having the season uh they've had in the past, but all the others are playing really well.
SPEAKER_03So just having UAH who's UAH Alabama. Oh, sorry, yep, yep, okay. That's what I thought. I couldn't remember.
SPEAKER_07All right, so Flagler, Trace McDonald had two goals, three assists, Ian Plott, four assists, Ben Nyberg, four goals, one assist. Tyler Douglas, five goals. They had some guys dishing and scoring. Augie Ambrose, uh de Brossi had two assists. Talk about defense. Brandon Goshalt, seven ground balls, six caused turnovers. Wow, that's a game. That's a game.
SPEAKER_03I mean, and another one to look at is you got 12 guys putting up points for them. I mean, they got some depth too at Father. Oh, yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_07And that's I think a little bit of the difference with Montevallo. Uh Matthew Bowes is a what is a great player that he scores a lot every time. He had five goals, but then you go down after that. John Spans, Michael Hawkins, and Chayden Chalote all had one goal and one assist. It drops pretty precipitously. I don't know how Matthew Bowes still scores as much as he does. Because he's a beast.
SPEAKER_01He's really good. That's why.
SPEAKER_03Dude, he has look at that. Six shots on five goals, kind of like a stat that I like to see. Yeah. You know, I mean, ideally 50, 50%, 40, 50% is kind of where you want to be. But you know, games like this is what really helps you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, we played several of them, too.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And Flagler's legit, guys. Flagler's legit. They're, you know, they're number six. And uh again, the only thing I think about them is they really need to play a good top 10 team. That's what I'd like to see.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna say, what what I looking at their schedule, I think they need to make their schedule a little harder, right? I mean, sure, the schedule's big when you go, right? And also you want to compete, especially compete early. You want to see how you are early, and then and then one later, too. Um, but I one thing I do know, the guy is a recruiting machine, because he I hear his name a lot. Um, so you know.
SPEAKER_07Well, and the other thing, remember, they're a new pretty damn new program. They used to be a club, and and they set themselves up pretty well locally to limit the travel dolls they have to do because they have to do more in conference on travel, and they play a lot of Sunshine State, which typically I would love to see the next few years that they play a northern team, uh, you know, or an until we're gonna be able to get it.
SPEAKER_03You gotta sprinkle in a couple you gotta sprinkle in a couple more, especially now that you got some talent and you're experiencing the top ten. Um but I'm telling you, the guys are recruiting machine, because I've heard Flagger a lot when, you know, because I try to help with a lot of kids out here, sending them to Division II, not just my school. Obviously, you know, I have a lot of friends that are coaches at all these schools. So um, you know, trying to find a fit for them, you know, uh, and and that's uh you hear Flagger a good amount, um, just like a Westminster uh CUI is you know, I mean, uh especially in the Northwest, right? Which is you know, it's it's good good to good to hear and good to see. But, you know, of course I I push uh the limestone color as much as I can, but not everybody, not everybody, not everybody fits that mold though, right? Right, nope. You know what I mean? You get like, ah, I don't I don't just throw that out there to everybody. I mean, like, you know, I got the face-up guy is uh one of my boys from Oregon right now, Kyler, but we'll get to that.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, okay. Okay, let's move on. I teased this one in the last one, talking about Monavalo Flagler, and that's Wingate against Anderson. Anderson pulls this out 15th. I shouldn't say pulls it out. They won. This was another statement win for Anderson, I think, uh, and they earned it against Wingate, just like did against Little Ryan. They win 15 to 13. I have to point this out before we get into it. I'm sure you noticed it, Danny, that Anthony Tasty Picano was one of the commentators. Our former guest analyst did a great job here. He did a great job. He really did. I love hearing him. I've heard I remember hearing him back when my son still played. He played. And Tasty was on the team, but he was injured. Yeah, yeah. He did some color commentator. So I texted the club. He's a wingy alumni, right? Wingy alumni? Awesome. I texted Tasty during the game. I'm like, Tasty, you're doing a great job. How about a shout-out for In the Crease? He's like, haha, no problem, I'll do it. Did you hear a shout-out, Danny?
SPEAKER_01Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. That's pretty good.
SPEAKER_07That's pretty weak. Yeah, he did a great job.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna break his chops next time I see him. He's a good kid. I like Tasty. He's a great kid. Great game. Uh uh, I'm gonna say a quality lacrosse game. To me, it was like two Division I heavyweights going at it. That's the kind of game it was.
SPEAKER_03And you know what it prepares them for honestly, two years we won, we had a tough loss at the end of the year or in the middle of the year that makes you stronger, prepare a little harder, and you know, not be so damn cocky or confident, right? I mean, you know, like you've got to get back to the roots. Um it's it was a great game, though, for sure.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, the two things I would say, and I already tease it, so I'll say it first. You know, Wingate made it a game with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but they really had no margin for error, and it's tough. They did a phenomenal job coming back. I'm not kidding. I was on the edge of my seat watching that game. But the other thing I'd say, and I know you think the same way, Danny, penalties, penalties, penalties really killed it for Wingate.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, penalties were the first thing that came up when I when I was texting.
SPEAKER_01Ten penalties, Dan. Ten penalties, man. You can't win tight games. How many minutes?
SPEAKER_03How many minutes total out of that ten, though?
SPEAKER_01A lot. A lot.
SPEAKER_0318 minutes, so you'll have a whole period being down a man, you know?
SPEAKER_01You know, it was a lot. It was bad. It was bad.
SPEAKER_07And what I'd say there is when I say new margin for error, I think they had a couple penalties, or at least one, in that time period where they were they were fighting their way back, if not two. And that just not that it kills the momentum, but now you're just on your heels and you've got to get back on offense.
SPEAKER_03Mental, mental uh discipline, right?
SPEAKER_01I mean, let's just point one thing out right now. Anderson is an excellent scholar. Oh, they are. Oh, you do. I they won that game. I watched the whole game against Limestone, dude. I know it. They are an excellent squad. They get out and fast break. They try to move. They like the run and gun, man. They like to get the ball out and going. Think of the transition goals they had. They did not waste time. They had two nice transition goals. Two nice ones. One was a pole goal, and one Bitterman got. But to me, this was a first the first quarter was a 2-1 game. You know, it was tight. It was good. You know, both both defenses playing well, both offenses kind of moving the ball. Here's another thing that kind of surprised me. You have two of the best face-off kids. I was gonna say this. You're gonna get the country on Anderson. And uh and uh who uh and Wingate went 62%.
SPEAKER_02Anderson was 50%.
SPEAKER_01Aiden Dixon and AJ Rush, okay. These two are both in the top ten in the country. And excellent. And Wingate was able to win a lot of face-offs, especially in the first half. In the second half, they started coming back and getting right more face off.
SPEAKER_03Well, was that too was that too, Dan? Was that too like the also the wing play for Wingate was helping do really well?
SPEAKER_07There was a lot, I'll tell you. There was a lot of clean wins by Logan Spath, especially in that first half. What I would tell you, Danny, I we talked about this last week in prep of this game and previewing this game. I said if Wingate I thought Wingate may be at 30% and they would have to play a lot of defense. Right. If you told me without showing the score that Wingate was at 62% of the face-offs, you'd think I was lying. I well, one, true. Two, I would think that Wingate probably won the game. That's how what good Anderson played. Yeah, they're good, man. They're good.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, look how many scores and guys that got points. They have 12 guys that got points. They are on the box score. Yeah. You know, I mean, I thought that when they played Lionstone a week or so ago, and it was a close, closer game, pretty close game, and they have they have speed, they're athletic, right?
SPEAKER_01They move the ball really well.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they work, they work, they work hard, and and uh they got nice size too, man.
SPEAKER_01Nice size to them, too, you know. These boys have they've got some nice size. I thought it was a really, really good game.
SPEAKER_03It is nice seeing uh more more talent like we were talking about. I mean, right? Like it's unbelievable seeing how much talent is on that field for two.
SPEAKER_07Well, this was also a mirror for me of like watching the the Newberry Wingate game when Anderson had six unanswered to go to the same score, eight, two, was in a different quarter. And then Wingate fought back to get two. Uh Kyle Spence got two goals at the end of the first half. He's a he's really good, man.
SPEAKER_01He's a really good player. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I mean, nine points, and you know, I mean, he's he's he sees lanes, you know. Uh his head, his head's his head's always up. I love that as a as a player, right? Like, I was I was an assist guy. Like, I love there's nothing better than hooking your boys up.
SPEAKER_01You know, and he's got nice size too. He's like 6'1 ⁇ , 190. Like, he's a big thick kid, you know. Like, he's not a small attackman by any means. Again, to me, this was the second best game I saw all year. The first game being the Tampa Limestone game, which was a great game.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, same thing. We we were down and came back, right?
SPEAKER_01Right. This game was like that to me. But again, I mean, you take if 6v6, wingate's on top. Oh, 100%.
SPEAKER_03And it's the little things, penalties, right? I mean, I mean, all the little things, and it adds up.
SPEAKER_01You know, Anderson, the Trojans were able to capitalize on four of those ten EMOs. And and Wingate lost by two. You stay out of the sinbox, Wingate. You might have a chance of winning some of these big games. Because if you look at if you look at Wingate's three losses, all three had to do with penalties, believe it or not. The shots were kind of even.
SPEAKER_03Were the penalties like guys doing something stupid, like uh, you know, slash they should be able to get a little bit of a few. Some of them, yeah. Some of them, some of them, yeah. That's that that's that mental toughness. You know, you that comes from it's not so much the kids, I'm sorry to say it, but the coaches gotta control that. And if you've been three games in a row and you're seeing that, then it's totally obvious that that's something they gotta, you know, you can't go in and expect them to win when you're down, man down for a full period. I mean, that's just you're not gonna win games.
SPEAKER_01Especially against good teams, you know. I mean, all these teams are top ten teams, you know. They're in the top ten, top twelve. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03And Anderson's got talent, man. They can shoot the ball, they can run.
SPEAKER_01They got all Americans on both sides of the ball. Both sides of the ball. And so does Wingate. Wingate's got all Americans on both sides of the ball, you know, offensively and defensively. So Anderson's goalie played really well, too.
SPEAKER_03That's what they bring up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, to me, he had six, he had six saves in the first quarter. Wingate, Wingate was able to get there. Looks just couldn't get it past Laughlin, couldn't get it past them. And Wingate also had the cage monster was out. I don't know how many, how, how many pipes.
SPEAKER_07And Anderson had a lot of the pipes too, but you're right. The one thing I wrote down is Wingate chances. At least four pipes had their chances and just couldn't bury it for one either a stop or something else. It wasn't like they had bad looks and they were forcing it. It was like they got the good shots. No.
SPEAKER_03Anderson, what was it? I mean, I I did the count just trying to total it up on the thing, but um, I'm getting like almost what, almost 60 shots to 48 or something like that. Is that about right? Something like that. So the shots, there still was a lot of shots. I mean, you know, I'm looking at this, excuse me, the score and also the shots, and like, was there any defense being played? You know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You know what? There's just they're that good. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03Like 60 shots or 50, like, that's 110 shots in a game. That's a lot longer.
SPEAKER_07You'd see it was a pretty aggressive, I mean, on defense. There it was.
SPEAKER_01When you see when you see the PLL, these guys are dodging to shoot, right? No one's dodging to this game was like that. These guys were like taking it next level, man. It was a hyped up game. The energy was up there. These guys were dodging, shooting, dodging, shooting, roll back, shoot, roll back, shoot, you know. Dave, clear, fast break, doing it again.
SPEAKER_03I mean, that's right. This game was, I knew this game was gonna be like that. I wanted to watch it.
SPEAKER_01It was awesome. I'm telling you, it was the second best game behind the the Tampa Limestone game earlier in the season. This game was best. So you know what? Wingate drops to five and three and ten-three overall, five and three in conference. I don't remember the last time they had three losses in conference. Anderson's 10-3, 7-1 in conference.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They're kind of like moving into that second spot.
SPEAKER_07Two and three for the big against the big dogs. The usual big dogs.
SPEAKER_01One against LR, one against Wingate, and Newberry. So you've got to hand it to him. You've got to hand it to them. Absolutely, absolutely, 100%.
SPEAKER_03What's the coach's name again? I couldn't remember.
SPEAKER_01Albert Mitchell.
SPEAKER_03Albert Mitchell, okay. Where'd he play? That sounds so familiar.
SPEAKER_01I want to say like North Carolina or something. I don't know.
SPEAKER_07But he he also coached at UMass Lowell for a while before coming down to Anderson.
SPEAKER_03That's another one. Um I do hear Anderson's name a good amount, too, with recruiting.
SPEAKER_01First of all, it's a beautiful school, and it's like a half hour from Clemson. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03I know, exactly.
SPEAKER_01You got the best of both worlds right there, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Uh, hey, you want to come hang out with these southern girls?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. 100%. So for Anderson Trojans, uh Braden Bushner with four goals, Matty Rogers with three goals, Ryan Bitterman, he's gonna be an all-American. They held him to two goals. Cole Sparks, the limestone transfer, got two goals. Max Calabriz. And three assists. Okay, he's a he's a he's a fast boy. He's a little shifty out there. Uh Calabuzer two.
SPEAKER_03I don't know what happened there. I had no idea.
SPEAKER_01Happens, you know. Yeah, it's just the way of the world these days. Uh Deutsch and Pignata each with one. Aiden Dixon was six for sixteen at the dot. Not a good not a good day for Mr. Dixon, who's like fifth or sixth in the country in in percentage. AJ Rush was eighth for sixteen at the dot.
SPEAKER_03And he had an and he had an assist in two shots.
SPEAKER_01Neither one of them were that great at face-off, and these guys have been balling out all year, you know. And Aiden Laughlin, between the pipes, hey, Coach Mitchell, take him out for a steak dinner because that kid was great, especially in the first quarter with the six saves. He had 16 saves overall.
SPEAKER_05That's legit.
SPEAKER_01He had a great game. And for Wingate, Kyle Spence, four goals, five assists. He's going to be an all-American. Joe Moran, uh, second highest scoring middy in the country right now. He had two goals. Sean Clark with two goals. Patrico Sampson, PayPal, Ruffritt, and Sam Goss, each with one. Logan Spate, 13 for 21, and Dylan Rupert, five for 11, but he had a goal. And uh they were at the dot. Nick Arnold, what a game on senior day for him. Six ground balls, five cause turnovers. He was really, really good. Yeah. Hey, and short sticky.
SPEAKER_03That's a Lombow, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They have two good, they have three good polls, actually, really. Uh the short stick D meeting, CJ Dore had a good game. Four grounds. He had a great game. Yeah, he played well. Four ground balls, one call turnover. Quad Williams, 15 saves. Again, the difference to me in this game was the 10 penalties by Wingate, giving up four extra man opportunities and losing by two. That's that's uh that's on uh you know defense and and and getting away.
SPEAKER_07And there was some good transition goals by Anderson. I'm not a defensive coach. Sometimes they got out there quickly. Oh, yeah, they were quick. They had the man advantage.
SPEAKER_01Good teams are gonna do that, Kev. Good teams are gonna do that.
SPEAKER_03You know, they're also about how much people wanting to sob and get OD guys off. That's why it's so key. That's what I was going to talk about was the D MIDI, which you guys get for Wingate. D MIDI is such a key position, especially if guys that can run, because one you have to run as a D MIDI to be able to cover guys, but meaning running on the offense is so clearing and not going off. Yeah. It's a big, that's a big aspect and so important in the game today. Um, so any little kids listening now, do not be discouraged if your coach puts you on D midfield, because defensive midfielder is one of the most important positions on the field to stop the best player on the other team that you can't put a pull on, right? How clearing the ball, all those things are very important. So, you know, I think that's a big difference, too. Anderson, they they don't sub a lot of guys. They they they play two-way minis. They don't lay a lot of D mini, too. Like, you gotta have guys that can play both ways, yeah. You know, or mid-D mini that can run the run the field and score too.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01So that's that SAC conference now, that whole that tournament, that's gonna be a crazy tournament. It's gonna be a lot of things. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. All right, let's move. I've got one more game to talk about, and that is what was our game of the week last week, which is Georgian Court against Wilmington. Did you get to catch that, Danny? I did. I watched the whole game. Okay. Wilmington wins it 16-10. What did you think?
SPEAKER_01Uh I thought Wilmington played pretty good. I thought Georgian Court played good for, you know, it was 5-3 at half. I mean, it was just like they were just feeling each other out. Yeah, it was tight, it was a tight game to that half. Yeah. And then, you know, the Wildcats, they take hold of the CAC, but with the, they had a 5-0 stretch in the third quarter that put Wilmington out to a 9-3 lead. Both teams traded goals in the first and second quarter. Zubek for the Wildcats and Joe Zurr for Georgian Court. Josh Lovely buried one for Wilmington, but Brody Seaman answered right away for the Lions. Josh Wetson buried a biscuit for the Wildcats, but Matt Dorian answered right away for the Lions. And the Wilmington led 5-3 at half, man.
SPEAKER_07I think what's interesting about that, it was 4-3. Wilmington scored. Oh, that was in the first half. They scored, I want to point this out because it was twice at the end of quarters that they scored with like six or seven seconds left to give them another.
SPEAKER_03You can't give up goals in the quarters or periods. You know, I mean, that's a that's an absolute game killer, you know, and confidence going in the next period.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it takes the wind right out of the sails. Um in the third quarter, the Wildcats rattled off five unanswered with goals by lovely, Leighton, Avant, Zubek, and Wetson. And uh that was a 9-3 advantage in the third.
SPEAKER_07And and they scored four, Danny, in the first four minutes. I mean, they just blew it open. Yeah, they never did. And I was kind of surprised a little bit. I was too. I thought after that half first half that it was going to come down to the wire, it was gonna be close between the two teams.
SPEAKER_01Now, that was the first Wilmington game I had seen all season, really. I haven't really watched them play this year, so I was glad to get to uh watch this game. Georgian Court, I watched last week, and I watched in the beginning of season because I like Mickey Hoover. I just think he's a good coach and I like what he does there. But uh Wilmington Wildcats, man, quietly at 7-3 overall and 5-0 in conference.
SPEAKER_03Like I'm gonna have to go, I'm gonna have to go watch them because it's kind of it's kind of interesting to see. I mean, one Wilmington, Delaware, uh cool, good little place to go, right? Who doesn't love the beach?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's right there.
SPEAKER_03Uh right there. So like, and it's not as hot as Florida, but you know, during the spring, so it could probably be a good spot for recruiting it. But um I didn't get a chance to watch it, but looking at this, I mean, we got some guys putting up some good numbers, too. I mean, you know, um Andrew uh what four for four, lovely four and two. I mean, Josh Weston, three and oh. I mean, these guys are shooting pretty good shooting percentages too. And um be kind of neat. Were they were they uh they're within the first couple years?
SPEAKER_01Um who, Wilmington?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01No, Wilmington's been around a while. Five or six years. Yeah, they've been around a while.
SPEAKER_03And Georgian Court is.
SPEAKER_01Georgian Court's been around for a while, too. Jersey, Jersey team. They're from Jersey.
SPEAKER_03All right, I didn't know where they were. All right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And we we talked about the CACC in the beginning of the season. We just wonder why the CACC hasn't been more dominant because they're in Jersey, and you got some really good lacrosse schools in in Jersey alone. Yes, you know, high schools.
SPEAKER_05Delaware they're good too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Lawrenceville, Del Barton, you know, you got some, you know, Don Bosco and all the Catholic schools and the prep schools in Jersey and some really good public schools. But, you know, Wilmington, again, caught they dominated faceoffs too.
SPEAKER_03He won 82%. 23 of 28. Connor with me here.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, that was one of the key stats. Yep. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's a big one, man. I mean, that's that's huge.
SPEAKER_07This is another game, Danny, that I saw it. You know, besides that rally, I mean, Georgian Court tried to come back. They got it to 10-7. Wilmington scores again with seven seconds left in the third to make it 11-7 after three. And uh you get that point. It's about 14-9, eight minutes left. Will Georgian Court is trying to crawl back in, but once again, like we talked about at the uh with the Wingate game and with the Montevallo game, uh, there's little room for error when you've got that much. You know, you've got eight minutes left, you've got five goals to catch up, and they just couldn't do it. And really, once again, uh Wilmington gets two really good transition goals to blow it up to make it 16-10.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, 41 shots to 33 in favor of Wilmington, 42 ground balls to 27.
SPEAKER_03There you go.
SPEAKER_01Uh both teams are like 18 for 23 at the clear, one for four on the extra man for the Wilmington Wildcats, 0 for 3 for the Georgian Court Lions. Uh turnovers, Wilmington had 26, and Georgian Court had only 20. So Georgian Court goes to 8-6, they're 5-1 in conference. It looks like they're gonna be that second seed. And uh but Well, there's still some games to play. Again, there I was just gonna say there's a couple of games to play, and we still can't count Chestnut Hill out at tournament time. Anyone who's ever taken a kid to a morning travel game knows how important that travel cup of coffee is. When it's important coffee, no, don't forget how early it is. Don't think you're at home. Don't think they're water. A better way to turn it.
Games to watch this week
SPEAKER_07Okay, let's move on to our games to watch this week. These are the we've picked one game for our game of the week, so that's not that one yet. We'll get to that one last. Are there any games that you guys are looking at besides our game of the week that are of interest to you coming up this weekend? What about you, Dev?
SPEAKER_03Can I be completely honest? I didn't get I didn't even get a look. I just know that there's a very important game that's happening that uh going down in Gaddy, South Carolina.
SPEAKER_07All right, we'll we'll hold you for that one then. You can comment on some of these as we get further. First of all, he's the man I love them. Yeah. Here's one that I'm looking at, and that's Maryville against Rockhurst. They are both undefeated in conference play, and this game could be for the number one seed. Maryville Maryville. But last game it went to overtime. It went to overtime. Now they're playing at Meryville this game. I would take Maryville, but I'm not gonna believe me, Rockers can pull this out and win it.
SPEAKER_01Maryville's jumped up in the in the standings, and that big win over Lewis gives them a lot of confidence, my man.
SPEAKER_03So I've seen them play, and they're they're a good team, and I I would take Maryville as well.
SPEAKER_07Okay. All right, so we're all in agreement, Maryville. I just think it it would I I count I don't count those three teams out playing against each other. Maryville, Rockers, and Lewis. What games are you looking at, Danny? Any others?
SPEAKER_01I have one game in the Sunshine State Conference that I think is going to be a kind of an interesting game. Lynn plays Palm Beach Atlantic, okay? That's on Wednesday? Lynn lost to St. Leo and PBA beat St. Leo. Lynn has kind of been jumping up, and St. Leo has been kind of going down. And so now you have this Lynn PBA matchup, which could be a big game. I mean, if PBA plays well and knocks Lynn off, you could really kind of mess things up in that in that Sunshine State Conference there.
SPEAKER_07The the Sunshine State Conference tournament, the quarterfinals start this coming Saturday. So this game you're talking about will already been played by the time the podcast comes out. Typical, but you're right. That that's why it gets really confusing of where they're gonna be in the Sunshine State for seating beyond that number one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because you know, if you if you get that by, you want that home game. You know, you want that home game. So, like St. Leo was in the driver's seat a couple of weeks ago and just dropped four inches. And now they're now they're gonna have to travel to go play a team that probably beat them by one. I mean, I wouldn't want to play St. Leo in that Sunshine State Conference because they're tough, but they lost four in a row.
SPEAKER_07I don't know whether they lost their their legs or remember, was it last year, Danny, where they lost to Palm Beach Atlantic again and kind of kicked them out of like uh being in the I don't remember in the in the top 20? It seemed like it was just deja vu. Yeah, it might have been might have been as Yogi Vera says. So another game I'm looking at, Danny and Devin, is Pace against St. Anselm. Now, what's interesting here is Pace just lost to Adelphi. Spack. They got now St. Anselm beat Adelphi. If Pace beats St. Anselm, they're all they're all tied at the top. I don't even know how they they pick the number one seed. Is it is it overall record? Is it is it by total goal? I don't even know how they do it.
SPEAKER_03They could be goals against what they should.
SPEAKER_07I mean, that's what I was those three teams, you mean that when they play each other could be. So that's I find an interesting one. That's still gonna be that could have been one from my game of the week.
SPEAKER_01Saying A's. Saying A's Pace Pace is missing Pace is missing one thing. I don't know what it is. They're a very, very good team, but they're not they're missing uh they're missing something. I don't know what it is.
SPEAKER_07I'll tell you, I'm gonna go against it. That game is that pace. I'm picking pace. Wow. Just to be a little contrarian with you there, Mr. Moran. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Watch watching a little bit of that game against just against a Delphi. Pace had some good some opportunities that they just I mean, the one attacker couldn't even finish inside a couple times, but um looked like they didn't have a lot of speed on the attack, right? Like uh you gotta be able to to create offense, not just on your up midfield, right? You gotta be able to have multiple a guy from the uh from An X or attack that can dodge and draw the double, same thing with midfield. And it just seemed like they were so slide slow to slow to a Delphi was slow to slide to Pace's attack, right? And Pace has a couple good minis and they just they they put all the pressure up on the middies and um you know they went on a little run and then they made their adjustments and Delphi took it to them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. A Delphi's strong. They got a great defense. They got Dylan Renner in goal. That kid's ridiculous. Yeah. You know? Yeah. And if he if he lets up one, he gets so pissed off at himself that like he doesn't let up anymore. You know what I mean? He's like one of those guys.
SPEAKER_03You can see him clearing the ball, too. He's like directing people where to go, and like he's active coming out. Yeah, he's an athlete.
SPEAKER_01The kid Delisandro, the pole, uh Reese Bauer, the pole, definitely all any 10 guys. You know what I mean? They're defensively, they're strong. But offensively, they're strong as well. With Dunnell and McDermott, the Hofsta, what's the big kid's name?
SPEAKER_07Kyle Lewis.
SPEAKER_01Kyle Lewis. Yeah, Noah Gibson. Noah Gibson. They're good, man. They're good. So, you know, St. A's is a good team. They're good. They are very good, yep. And they don't make mistakes. You know what I mean? They take care of the rock like Mr. Spilly.
SPEAKER_07If they do what they did against a Delphi, which is control the pace of the game, they do win. Yeah, I think they're I think they're a better team than Pace. I really do.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think Pace is gonna I think Pace is gonna drop to them.
unknownSt.
SPEAKER_03Ace is gonna drop.
SPEAKER_01It's two against one. St. Ace. St. Ace is gonna wind up being the number one seed. Yeah. And they're gonna wind up having to play, you know, maybe Pace again, you know, in the tournament. You know, Assumption and Bentley are probably gonna get in. Yeah, we'll tell you. So what any other games, Danny, you've got? No, that's it. Uh the Wilmington Chestnut Hill game, the C A C C.
SPEAKER_03We only got one game we care about. Let's be honest.
SPEAKER_07I gotta run now. I gotta find it. Come in now. So, first of all, Lander Flaggler.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Flaggler.
SPEAKER_03Flaggler, Flaggler's gonna work them.
SPEAKER_07Whoever wins that gets the number one C. That's why I find it interesting. Same thing with Roberts Wesley and DeUville. Now, Roberts Wesley should win this game, but this has conference tournament implications for De Uville. If they win, they could win the tournament. Which would be amazing. Yeah, it would be unbelievable. Northwood wheeling. Both fine for the last two spots with Malone. If Northwood wins a first-year program and they get into the conference tournament.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Where are they located? Where are they located?
SPEAKER_07They're in Michigan. They're in Michigan. Grant Grand Rapids, right? I forget. I don't think it's it may be near there. It's a smaller town.
SPEAKER_03That's really cool. I mean, we we've been talking about that. I mean, the growth and the growth in this division is amazing right now.
SPEAKER_01And they're winning ball games. They're winning games, you know what I mean? They're not and all right. They get blown, they get blown out one and two, but you know, for the most part, they've been pretty kind of competitive. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_07They've they put a good out-of-conference together, and they are very competitive in the GMAC, other than Seton Hill and maybe a few others, right? Right. So great job. The only other game I have is next Wednesday, the 23rd of April, because it's New Bear against Anderson. I think Anderson's got a good game. But that's going to be a good game. Yeah. That's going to be a good game. Okay. Now, now you guys, are you guys
Game of the Week
SPEAKER_07ready? We're ready. We know what it is. I'm just going to set up and let you two go at it. Limestone against Wingate.
SPEAKER_01Limestone's going to win.
SPEAKER_07I think they win.
SPEAKER_03You know, I think I think it's going to be a close game. It's been a battle. Guys, the guys are both teams are coming off not great games, right? Wingate had a rough uh game last week. Limestone didn't dominate against Katamba like they should have. Sloppy, not motivated. Sometimes you play down to your level. I get that, but um it's gonna be a great game. I mean, I talked to a storyer who's a close friend of mine uh you know on a weekly basis, I'm pretty sure, but um just asking him his dogs, and you know, uh he he thinks, you know, the guys are trying to play underdog because the way that they played lately, and and wing gates had their number, right? So on the recent games. Um so I think it's gonna be a close game, an awesome bout. I'm looking forward to watching. It's a seven o'clock night game, so I can actually watch it at four. I'll be throwing the throwing it up on my TV in the living room, screaming and yelling. My kids thinking dad's crazy, but uh that's what that's what we do.
SPEAKER_07They know their dad.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, there's some depth. Uh, you know, we've got depth on offense. Uh obviously Joey's a shooter, and and uh uh what's the other kid? Uh Spence is a beast, dude. I mean he's Sean Clown. Yeah, yeah. We got we have some good close guys. Um, you know, they're gonna get their points. It's just about who's gonna have the most runs and who's gonna take care of the rock. I mean, that's the to me the most important things that we've been talking about for a while, right? Like, you know, who's gonna have the men who's gonna have the the toughness, mental toughness, um, you know, who's gonna not make the most mistakes and uh, you know, take care of the rock. And, you know, going into the fourth quarter, you know, I'm sure I'll be texting you guys, and we'll be talking we'll be talking about the exact same thing, you know, right? Who who's who's who's gonna finish it and who's who's gonna take care of the rock, and that's what it comes to, you know.
SPEAKER_07I I think for Wingate to win this game, they've got to come out like they are right now. A little bit of a wounded animal. No holes barred. They've got to play, Danny. You remember some of these games. I think your son Sean was an assistant coach. This is when my son was a junior. When they played Limestone, this one well, when they played Limestone, my son was a senior, he couldn't play, he was injured, at Crown Classic. And when they played Lenore Ryan the year before that regular season, and they came out ahead, they held the lead for many times. That doesn't mean that Lenore Ryan and Limestone didn't come back, they did, and they even had the the the lead many times by more than one goal. But they wingate kept it close within two goals. I think Wingate needs to keep it within two goals against limestone to win this game.
SPEAKER_01You know how I feel. Like I'm a Wingate guy, and and Mr. Spilker is a limestone guy. But I'm gonna be honest, I've said all year long that I think Limestone is the best team in the country. Yeah. I think they're better than Tampa. That's just one guy's opinion. That was a one-goal game. Yeah. And a couple of posts in that game from Limestone.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we we we and we didn't play a good game, and we're we'll tell you right now, especially in the first quarter.
SPEAKER_01Especially the first quarter.
SPEAKER_03You watch that game and watch us play now, state against Anderson. We we we're playing with more depth and have more guys playing than we had in a long time. You're not running four minis out of the box. They can run eight minis and six attack ones if they want. I mean, yeah, it's really, and that's where we're talking in all these teams. The depth and the athletic ability in Division II, especially Wingate Limestone, is unbelievable. I mean, you know, we there's not when when I played, you had four attack the attack one, you know, and after that it was a big drop. Nothing against all my teammates. But, you know, now the difference between the second midfielder and the third and fourth line is not that much different. It's all about who who has the mental toughness and who can play in the games and step up, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So, you know, it's a sack conference play. You know, it's basically gonna be a mini playoff game. It's gonna have that kind of feel.
SPEAKER_03Um, the excitement's gonna be crazy. Wait, you see it. Have you been to Line Stream in a little bit?
SPEAKER_01Okay, I was just gonna mention this is the first time I'm going to Gaffney since 2014.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's it's different, and they've done a good job.
SPEAKER_01Um I was there in 22, was the last time I was there. So 2014, my son Sean, we took a visit, and Coach Storier was the assistant at the time. JB was at the helm, and Coach Storier took us around and uh showed us the campus, and and uh he's a great guy. You know what? I have a lot of respect for Coach Storier. I really do. I just I tell I talk to Kevin, we talk off air, you know, and I was like, dude, they're so well coached. They just do everything right. The players move right, they move off ball, the defenders are fundamentally sound, they slide at the right time, they double, they return, they get back, they just do all the little things. And then, like you said, depth, they're like the Chinese Army. I don't know how many LSMs they run out, you know, I don't know how many midfielders they run out.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I was like, where's where'd this number 83 come from? Exactly. I'm like, who's this kid? I'm going down. He wasn't playing he wasn't playing all game and then it inner game. He's playing the bottom. I'm like, Steuer, where's this kid been?
SPEAKER_01Right, right. No, there's depth. And the same thing for Wingate. They're deep as hell. They got multiple lines, they got multiple scores.
SPEAKER_03They can so this is why that's the difference from being, you know, top ten consistently compared to the guys that the teams that make have one good year, right? You know, to be a program long longevity and consistently good, you know, it takes a lot of work. And uh you gotta have depth.
SPEAKER_01So Wingate's gonna have to be good at the dot again. You know, they're gonna have to be up in that 50% range, kinda, near. And they're gonna need good goalie play, they're gonna need good wing pay, and most importantly, they need to stay out of the box.
SPEAKER_06Yes.
SPEAKER_01You can't be in the box against McGarry and Zach Terry and Conor and these guys, Omeggy and Connor Kaczynski. Like these kids are good, man. They bury biscuits. You know, Zach Terry, is there a shot that that kid doesn't like? He lets it go from anywhere, man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he's a lefty, he's a lefty laser, he's definitely a shooter. You don't want to, you don't want him his hands being free. He's not gonna obviously dodge by you, you know, but you've got to have a creased guy, a guy that can shoot it like he does. His hands are so legit, and he can sting the corner from anywhere, even non-angle shots.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he's good, man.
SPEAKER_03So you don't want to slide off of him, you know. I mean, ideally, hopefully, you know, I'm sure they're coming up with some kind of philosophy, but um yeah, he can he can let it rip. And I'll tell you, um, I'll give a little shout out. One of my kids, uh, there's I got three kids that uh sent middle line. So one's a sophomore face-off kid from Oregon who I coached on my team, Oregon team for years. Um, he tore his ACL rated senior year of high school. Um so he was coming back, and last year was kind of a rehab year, but he's a sophomore, and um, you know, last week he went like 70% against Kataba. Um and he's been you know a little bit over 50 from pretty much there. His name's Kyler Donahue. Good little kid, works his buttons. Um so uh it's good to good to see one of my boys out there that I've sent out, and and then uh one of my other close friends, Ricky Matthews' son's a D Midi, played at St. Paul's, he's he's a freshman, he's on the third midfield, maybe second, third D MIDI. You know, he won't probably want to step up on the field this game, but um, you know, uh it's really neat that having kids there now, and also friends of mine's kids that are playing. So the trip out a couple weeks back or a month or so back for our 25th anniversary of our 2000 championship team was really cool um and fun, especially having some kids um that I've sent there that are now playing. You know?
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. That's great, that's great. Okay, so I like so I like limestone in this game. I think they're you know, they're really, really good. Number two in the game. You gotta give it to them. They're at home. I'm looking forward to going to Gaffney.
SPEAKER_03Give me a score. Give me a score, Danny.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. You know, both these teams. Lucky one. Wingate's defense has held a lot of teams to less than double digits. Only like two or three teams have gotten into the double digits on them. I'm gonna say 14-11 limestone.
SPEAKER_03You're right there with me. I I was saying I was saying I was saying 15-12.
SPEAKER_07I'm right there with both of you. I can pick either one. I was gonna say is a three-goal game.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, three-goal game. That's what I think.
SPEAKER_07And so I'd say, you know, I Danny, I actually had 14-11 to begin with, just like you. So I, you know, then I look at this.
SPEAKER_03I look at what's rumors.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know. It is, it is what it is. It's all right. But you know what? I I'm calling Spade a Spade. You know, like I I I I've been giving limestone my my props all year long. Kevin can attest to that on my DigiCo. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03They got some depth, good, good goal to play depth. They got I mean, I've never complained too much.
SPEAKER_01They got a good coach. They got a good coach, man. And it shows, it shows in games. Like, I see the difference in games sometimes with his coaching. And then, like, the the when they faced Tampa in the beginning of the season, I mean, he was JB's little protege for a long time. I saw similarities in the way they were calling their games. And I was like, all right, who's gonna call the timeout first? It would be JB. I was like, oh, this is great. You know, like it's it's like a little battle within the battle on the coaches' side.
SPEAKER_03Oh, and he he get he hears it from other alumni too, you know that, right? Oh, I was retiring and then I left and went took that, right? Come on, man. Like, at least at least be honest with us. Yeah, you just wanted to get taken a job in Florida and get away, right? That's right. So I'll bust it on his, you know, whatever's a little bit, but he's a great guy.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he's been a good guy.
SPEAKER_03He's a great guy. Uh I love his family, and you know, his wife's awesome, and daughter went to Lime's show too, and they're they're they're they're they're part of the family. I'll tell you.
SPEAKER_07Coach Storier was they both have been very good to us on the podcast. Coach Storier, they text him, he responds in usually minutes, 30 minutes. Yep. Yeah, if not less. Like uh it's just he's uh And he's got so much shit going on, like he calls back. I don't expect it. Yeah, I know it's great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he keeps he calls me back too, and I'm like, dude, he's like, nah. I mean, he'll be at practice, like, walk away, call me back. I'm like, dude, your parents like, oh, the guy's got it. What's up, Smoker? How's that how's Axel doing? You know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So yeah, I'm looking forward to going to Gaffby. It's been 11 years since I've been there. I know the school's changed a little bit, but I'm looking forward to just being there and at a great game, you know, and and and great Division II lacrosse.
SPEAKER_03You know, even if go get some barbecue at Daddy Joe's, man. It's my own little spa. My wife and I both worked at a little Daddy Joe's barbecue, all right?
SPEAKER_01All right, gonna mark that down for sure. I'll check it out. I fly in Saturday afternoon. I was like, should I go to the hotel in North Carolina or should I just drive straight to Gaffney, get something to eat and hang out and maybe have a high C or two, you know?
SPEAKER_03Go go to good old Gaffney for sure. It's it's I mean, when I was school, it was, you know, uh a blinking light, uh, one other Walmart and uh one bar to go to, and you know, now they've like refreshed downtown and you have restaurants and cool things that are going on, and you can just, you know, um, we weren't just you know going playing lacrosse and going to our our across houses and and and having a few cool ones. Um, you know, um there's a there's a little more going on in Gaffney than what it used to be. They've done a really good job with the school. The school's we got a new president who is uh was an athlete too, and um they're uh they're doing a lot with the school, keep it and maintain, and you know the facilities have grown. It's uh pretty great to see. It's nice to be part of it. Make sure you go stop by the Hall of Famer and see if you can walk in and see my plaque in there, all right?
SPEAKER_01Well, you got it. Definitely. They're gonna take a selfie with it.
SPEAKER_03I look a little younger in that thing, too, though.
SPEAKER_07All right, before we close
Conference Tourney Talk
SPEAKER_07out, uh because uh when I heard when I was watching games last Saturday, and they said, you know, the Sunshine State uh conference tournament start quarterfinals on Saturday, I'm like, quarterfinals for the conference tournament? Holy shit, already? So I put together really quickly, I'll I'll we'll run down the conference tournaments just so people know when they're happening and kind of where we sit, where I where I think things are. And guys, chime in when you want to talk about any team. But here first of all, we'll start off right with the sack. The tournament is 26, 30th of April and 4 May. Six teams make it. Limestone and Anderson with the byes. LR with the three seed, they basically finished out. Newberry will be the four seed if they go one and one against LMU and Anderson, and Wingate will be the five seed if they do the same thing, go one and one. So if they beat Coker but lose to Limestone, they'll be the five seed. Coker, Katab, and Marshall will all be tied at four and six. Uh and they went one and one against each other for the sixth seed. So how that works out for the sixth seed, that's what I've got. So the bottom ones are will be it's surprising that Wingate will unless they beat limestone and coker, and they will go to the four seed, probably. We'll be at the five seed. That's been a while since they've been in that spot. Yeah, they'll be on the road. Yep. Yep. Uh so Conference Carolinas, that tournament is April 22nd, 25th, and 27th. Danny, you hit on this earlier. North Greenville with the one seed and a bye, Belmont Abbey with the other one, Mount Olive with the three seed, Barton, Young Harris, and Emmanuel all fighting for four, five, and sixth seed. Wow. Pretty cool, huh? Yeah, yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_03That's a tight tighter conference, yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And don't count Belmont Abbey out just because they lost to North Green Benoit.
SPEAKER_03My boy Chris Barrett. My boy Chris Barrett was one of my best friends in college.
SPEAKER_07I would not he's done it before. You think that they're going to lose in the in the conference tournament and they win. Dude, they've been quiet.
SPEAKER_03He's a really good motivator, I'll tell you that. Barrett can motivate. He's you know, I mean, he was a big recruiter too during the run. They all, him and story when they were assistants, when they did went and won four straight or three out of four, whatever it was. Right, right. Um, you know, he's a bit he's a great recruiter, um, even better person, uh, but uh the way he can motivate and get a team prepared is pretty pretty good. I mean, because he's he's doing it, and not had that great talent this year, you know? Yeah, yeah. He lost some good guys, you know.
SPEAKER_01You know, the last two years uh the the Crusaders have started slow, but they ended strong. Yes. And they're doing that now. They're doing that.
SPEAKER_03That's having a good coach, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they're they're coming along, and like again, I don't know how much I could bet against them in the tournament time. I mean, like, they're yeah, it could be tough. But North Greenville's in the driver's seat. And yes, that's another good school, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03We talk about schools, Crow. I mean, Greenville's a great town, so that's nice to see too.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Yeah. Okay, Peach Belt tournament is May 3rd and 5th. Flagler will be the one seed if they beat Lander, and Lander will be the two seed if they lose to Flagler. So that's I put it that way because that's what we think it's going to happen. Montevala will have the three-seed and Alabama Huntsville with the four seed. Whoever wins that game goes to the ARM goes and plays against the ARMAC winner. Their tournament is April 24th and 26th. CMU is the one seed, Concordia is the two seed, Westminster is the three-seed, and then Dominican will be the four-seed. Um Sunshine State. This is where it gets interesting. Beyond the one seed, that tournament's April 19th, 23rd, and 26th, the quarterfinals of this Saturday. Lynn will be the other will be the two-seed in the bye if, like you said, Danny, they beat Palm Beach Atlantic. If they they control the destiny for the bye.
SPEAKER_01And like I said, Lynn lost to St. Leo and PBA beat St. Leo.
SPEAKER_07So Rollins is the will be the two seed, I think, and get the bye if they beat Emory Riddle on Wednesday and Lynn loses.
SPEAKER_01I wonder if their injured players are back, Rollins.
SPEAKER_07I talked to Coach, he said somewhat he said the young guys are two things. He said the young guys that have had the playing and now they've got the experience and they're playing better, right? Oh, yeah. Even in the last game.
unknownReally?
SPEAKER_07I texted him, I was like, What's the deal? You guys were uh especially against St. Leo. I was really impressed that in that game against St. Leo. So it it's a crab shooter uh Emory Ridd becomes a Two seed if they beat Rollins and Lynn loses to uh Palm Beach Atlantic. So there's several that you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a good conference. It's gonna be great. I love it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Talk about a beautiful school too, Palm Beach. Like he wouldn't want to go to Palm Beach.
SPEAKER_01I mean schools.
SPEAKER_03Their schools are ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01I mean Flagler in St. Augustine gorgeous.
SPEAKER_03Oh my God. It's yeah, I saw that one too when I was down in St.
SPEAKER_01Augustine. Not a tough, not a tough sell to sell, you know, get the kids to come down.
SPEAKER_03Go to the beach. It's not a cold, you know.
SPEAKER_07And so, and then yeah, exactly. And then I think the rallying up the sixth seed would be the Florida Tech or St. Leo. I don't really know who's got it then.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I thought I thought I thought my other boy Marty was gonna have a little bit better year than he's had. He's had some tough win tough losses early on where they were like in-games and lost and a couple that he probably could have won. Um, you know, tough schedule. He had exactly hard schedule. He and he he made his schedule tough because he had some good talent this year talking to Marty. And uh, you know, I mean he was talking a big game when we were when when Coach Sereno was getting inducted uh to the coaches, you know, National Coaches Hall of Fame early in the year. Um all the all the limestone alumni guys that were under his umbrella that are all now coaches were all there, you know, too. Um all the other guys from my group. Um, you know, I I couldn't go, uh I was invited, obviously, but I couldn't go. And I heard Marty was talking the game there, you know, ready, ready for the boys to have a great season. So he believed in it. So it's hard on, it's hard for him. I mean, any coach, right? And not turn out the way the way you wanted, right?
SPEAKER_07Right. Yeah. Yeah. Um, so the next one I've got is CACC. That's April 28th, May 1st, and 3rd. Wilmington with the one seed, Georgian Court with a two-seed, Chestnut Hill will be the three-seed. Uh if they beat Bridgeport, uh, they've got a few more games left, but they should be the three-seed. Post should be the four-seed, and Bridgeport should be the five seed. They only have five games, five teams that go in. Um because they do they do one game first and then they go to the semis. Uh so in the GMAC, it looks to me like Seton Hill is obviously the one seed. I think it goes Davenport, then Lake Erie. But they have to beat a few more teams. Like Lake Erie has got is a three-seed if they beat Malone, Davenport, and Tiffin. Which they could. Which they can. They definitely can, yeah. Walsh.
SPEAKER_01Alone will give them a good game.
SPEAKER_07Davenport Davenport's number two. They're at five and one right now. In turn in conference. So now they've got to play Lake Erie and Northwood. Northwood could give them.
SPEAKER_01I mean, that's yeah.
SPEAKER_07Walsh Walsh is the four seed, assuming so those will be two and three. Walsh will be the four seed if they go one and one against uh Davis and Elkinson and Seton Hill. Good chance of that. And then like I said earlier in the show, Malone, Wheeling, and Northwood are all vying for the last two spots for five and six seeds.
SPEAKER_03So although the season, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_07At the bottom part, you know Seton Hill be shocked if Seton Hill doesn't win it all, but it's really interesting to see the teams trying to come up, especially teams like Malone and Northwood and Wheeling that's starting to come back up that you know used to be good years ago. They weren't wheeling was good years ago. Yeah. And now they're they're scratching to come back. I like to see that. ECC, go ahead.
SPEAKER_03That wheel, that wheeling, the school wheeling out in West Virginia is what we were talking about, right?
SPEAKER_06Right.
SPEAKER_03Wheeling. Yeah. That is a beautiful school. I mean, in the middle of the mountains, I remember taking a trip. I think we drove through the night up there and played and then came back. And Coach was wondering why we played that. I'm like, just had a 14-hour bus ride. They got off the plate. What the hell do you mean? I mean, they didn't even use a hotel. It was there and back.
SPEAKER_06Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, back in the day when things were probably cutting costs or whatever. But they're they're good. They were a really good school. And uh, so sorry to interrupt on.
SPEAKER_07No, that's perfect. That's great information. Moving on to the ECC, the tournament is April 30th, and I think May 3rd. I'm not really sure. You said it earlier, Danny. It's whoever wins Mercy and Malloy will be the one seed, and the other one will be the two seed. And that game's April 25th.
SPEAKER_01Where is that game? Is it at Mercy or Malloy?
SPEAKER_07I think it's at Mercy. Hang on.
SPEAKER_03Mercy's in the South, aren't they?
SPEAKER_01No, Mercy's up in Dobbs Ferry, New York. So in there in the East Coast Conference, yeah.
SPEAKER_05All right. So the travel show is.
SPEAKER_01The game is at Mercy. So it's about an hour above Manhattan. So it's not far from Manhattan. So I I like Malloy this year, man. They got depth. They got a great face-off kit. They have a really good goalie.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna say they have a good goalie. I knew that for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, coach Coach Dunn is a legend, man, and you know, from NYIT, and he's been there a couple of years now. And when he got there, Kevin and I said, you know what, give this man four years. And it's his fourth year.
SPEAKER_03Well, I mean, and he and he was coached under you know, New York Tech, right? I mean, that was the first one. Yeah, that's where he was the coach.
SPEAKER_05Yep, yep.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the coach, the coach that was uh, you know, at New York Tech forever. How was his last name?
SPEAKER_05Um Postel.
SPEAKER_03Postel, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um just a good guy. I mean, I I've even I run into him, you know, after you know him me beating him in one championship and then beating us the next year, you know, still you you run into somebody and then you coach against or played against, and he's just a great guy. Oh, yeah, you know. Just just a really nice dude, and um all of his players loved him. So it's always nice to see you know that happening when you know um, and it's it's tough not not to have a New York tech anymore, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, big time.
SPEAKER_03It was a great program. Um I had a bunch of kids that I had a friend that I knew that went there too, that played played Pro Bowl with or Dale tournaments or whatever with. And um it's a shame that they they closed down, you know, or stopped across or whatever.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So now Coach Dunn, since he's been at Malloy, you could just see that just trending upward, trending upward, trending upward. And now, you know, they're in a good spot. They got some players, they got, like I said, good face-off guys, good, good goalie, and and a and a great coach, man. You know, like it goes a long way. So I like Malloy. I think Mercy's missing something this year, Kev. As good as they are.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And being even in conference, I I have to I want to give this one to Malloy a little bit. Me too.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I I think it's their year. I do. I agree. All right, so the next one is the GLBC, May 5th and 7th. Rockhurst and Maryville, they play this weekend for the one and two seed. Lewis can be the two-seeded if uh I've got if they beat Rockhurst and Rockhurst loses to Maryville. So they got a couple games left, and you, Indy, will be the four-seeded. Well, we all know what Lewis did last year.
SPEAKER_01They won out.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, we got to regions and uh NCAA tournament time, and the region rankings were getting, and Lewis wasn't even in there for the first three weeks. And then that last week before the tournament started, Lewis wound up winning out and getting into the tournament. So I I don't want to bet against the Lewis Flyers. I mean, I mean, I mean I mean Maryville just beat them. U Indy's not the same team they were. So it's gonna be twenty between, I think, Lewis and and Maryville in that in the I think I like Maryville, I think.
SPEAKER_03I like to see that you know um watching them uh in the game, they definitely have some talent. So I think I think I'm going with Maryville now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they they have a nice offense, Maryville. They move the ball. They move the ball, they get the defense to move. You know what I mean? They just they're patient with their offense, they don't look to do crazy things. They just you know, well coached, again. Good coach.
SPEAKER_03You gotta take take, I mean, taking care of the rock. The difference, you know, between these average teams and great teams at the end of the year is taking care of the small things, which is turnovers, right? Sub game, clears, clearing. All the all the things that you have the most control over, right? Yeah, having good passes, catching the ball right, moving your feet to the ball, not missing ground balls, like you know, I mean, all those things. Yes, you've got to have a skilled badass face of God, goalie, defenseman score, yeah. But if you can't do all the other things between the lines and do it very well and at a high rate, say at 85, 90% success rate, you get to 75, 60% success rate and clears, turnover, whatever, you are gonna fail. You're gonna fall apart.
SPEAKER_07Yep. Yep. Okay, one last one. Uh, any 10, April 26th, the 30th, and May 3rd. St. Anson will be the one seed if they beat Pace. A Delphi will be the two seed, I think, uh, if that goes like that way, and then Pace will be the three, followed by Assumption. Wow. They will be the four, and then if they beat Bentley, but Bentley becomes a four-seed, they beat Assumption and St. Mike's, and then Southern New Hampshire. Southern New Hampshire, who started off really poorly, could sneak. Probably the sixth seed.
SPEAKER_03And you saw Assumption just beat Bentley today.
SPEAKER_07Did they?
SPEAKER_03Yup. 14-11.
SPEAKER_07Wow, Assumption really just took a seed.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's exactly right. There you go. They scored five goals in the fourth to zero, Bentley. I tell you, I watched we keep talking about it. There it is, right?
SPEAKER_01I watched Assumption play Adelphi two weeks ago, and they slowed the ball up to the point where Adelphi couldn't get their offense on the field.
SPEAKER_05They were impatient.
SPEAKER_01And they just held on to that ball, and they scored. There was a tight game. I think they held a Delphi scoreless in the first quarter for like the first time all year. Like Assumption shocked the hell out of me. I was like, where's this school again? Like I forgot about Assumption and then.
SPEAKER_03I mean, they got worked by they got worked by Pace early in the year, and then St. Anselm beat them.
SPEAKER_05Well, St. Anselm.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and Adolphe, but that was a one-goal game. I mean, so realistically, they only had two bad games where Pace and Adolphi, but everybody else, they played really well against. Um that's a that's a good that's a good quality win.
SPEAKER_07Okay, so before we moved to shout outs, we had one, I have one error that we committed. It wasn't Postel did not coach at NYT. That was Jack Cayley. Jack Caley. Tom Postell was that post that then became LIU. So Cayley was great. Yeah. Why did why did Danny miss that? Because we did a podcast episode talking about both Cayley and Postel. And to be honest, Danny, I had to Google it to make sure it was great. So that's I wasn't like I knew it off the top of my head, okay?
Shout outs
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_07Okay. All right. All right. So to close out, Devin, if you listen to us at all, we always do shout-outs. We're gonna let you give any shout-outs you want first.
SPEAKER_03Uh, first, thanks for getting coming on again with you guys. It's always a pleasure. Um, I appreciate you giving the love and also staying in contact, asking about my son. Um, just um number shout-out to my boy, Axel Spilker. I love you. Proud of you. Can't wait for next uh week and the final week to ring the bell, buddy. Um so thank you. And you guys uh good luck the rest of the year. Can't wait for uh to see how this thing turns out, and hopefully I can uh it's uh you know limestone in the championship game and I can head out once we bring that title back to the South is is my is uh what I'm think what I'm thinking. So um, but uh that's it for me.
SPEAKER_07All right. Danny, any shout-outs for you?
SPEAKER_01I do. I have a one pair of shout-outs. Okay. A couple of Flagler Saints did some really good things this week, Kev. Tyler Douglas, a hundred career goals at Flagler. Love it.
SPEAKER_03Congratulations, buddy.
SPEAKER_01And our boy Trace McDonald, who we had on the program a couple of weeks ago, a hundred assists. So congratulations, guys.
SPEAKER_07That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01Big numbers.
SPEAKER_07That's awesome. That's awesome. I've got a few. First one is to Stefano Evan of Deuville, now the all-time career points getter against UDC. Did it last week against UDC, seven goals and one assist that game. Wow. Total points 124, 77 goals, 47 assists. DeUville being a new program. That's damn good. And they played some tough things. Stefano Evan is a great player. Second shout-out goes to our guest analyst, Devin Spilker. You killed it tonight. I don't think I need to be on the show anymore. Maybe the Danny Devin show from now on.
SPEAKER_03Oh man. Look, I love to do this, man, guys, and I really appreciate it. Uh, it's always a pleasure hanging out with you guys. And and uh the just the the way that Division II has developed and improved from top to bottom with all these schools that have added, all the talent. Uh it's just really, really amazing to see, especially a guy that um, you know, was was asked, and my parents asked why Limestone and why Division II, and Devin's a great ball player and get recruited from all these schools, and you know, to go to go there play with my brother and you know, um, and win national championships. We play in four straight, and and Division II wasn't even uh that big at that time, and see it now and the and the talent and the levels of these teams is just amazing. And uh so you guys doing this on a weekly basis um is awesome and and I appreciate it.
SPEAKER_07Thank you. Appreciate it so much. And lastly, just to go to our sponsors, remember our sponsors, D2 Showcase. You talked about Marty Ward. Go to D2Lacks.com if you've got a someone. You just said it, Devin, right? The talent is there. If you want to play good lacrosse and you're in high school or your son's in high school, you need to check out the D2 Showcase. And then also Shad Coffee and Lids, their website, shadExperience.com. Why do I point that out? Because you need to have that shad experience. Get the lid and have a good coffee experience. It is an experience. I've got one. Go check it out. Nice.
SPEAKER_03What's that lid about?
SPEAKER_07It's a coffee, so it's a coffee, and you know when you get like a regular coffee thing and there's no you can't really smell the coffee. This thing actually, the way they do it, it's open on top, but it doesn't spill. And so if it has a top on top of that, so you don't spill if you walk, and then you can you can actually place it, uh it's got like a little holder, so you can actually smell your coffee like like you're having a glass of wine, except it's the aroma of coffee. It can't beat it.
SPEAKER_03There you go. There we go.
SPEAKER_07See, look at that, Devon. He's like setting me up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I want to know it's it's more advertising, man. Exactly right. I'm not a big coffee drinker because, as you guys know, I got plenty of energy. So when I drink off, I'm bouncing, I'm bouncing off the walls and I'm feeling easy, but I'm thinking about for my mother-in-law and my wife.
SPEAKER_07Check it out. Check it out. All right, boys. This has been awesome. And so, with that, for this episode, Devin and Danny, that's a wrap.
SPEAKER_01That's a wrap.
