Welcome,
Intro
SPEAKER_03welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's Lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stenstrom, and with me as always is the man better than a box of chocolates, Danny Moran. Hey, Danny. Kevin, you're so nice on Valentine's coming up. He's so nice. You got that reference right away. Joe Vedovnik. That's a little subliminal message for you. I didn't realize he was such a romantic. Well, the other one we were we were playing with was just to call you Dr. Love. But I decided to go with the box of chocolates. I thought that was a little more subtle. I wanted to see if you get it. Dr. Love, you would have gotten right away, but you were right on top of it again tonight, Mr. Marie.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's a really nice introduction, Kevin, on this coming up Valentine's Week. How are you tonight in Northern Virginia, my friend? My prolific podcast producing partner, the patriot, the patriarch of perfection, Mr. Kevin Stenstrom.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Wow. Well, I'm doing even better now after that intro. What can I say? I'm ready to get after it, Danny. I mean, it's really heating up out there in the D2
Week in Review
SPEAKER_03world. This past week had some real thrillers. Good week.
SPEAKER_04Good week for Lacrosse, even though it's the second week, man. There was some exciting games.
SPEAKER_03You know what? Yeah, I would say even when you talked about, we talked about last week, a lot of mistakes in games, first game. You saw that even with the top teams. Yeah, that happened. I didn't see that as much this week as last week. Not only did we have great thrillers, but I really think the goalie play in several games on both sides of the net, both both sides of the field. That was like the matchup in several of them.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was it was a good week. There were some good games. I mean, our game of the week turned out to be everything that was advertised and more.
SPEAKER_03A classic that one was.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we'll get to that. We'll get to that. Let's run down starting with the one we someone that we were watching on Friday. The first one was Belmont Abbey against Rollins. Rollins kind of took control and beat them 17 to 6. But this is one of the ones where the two goalies, J.R. Tomey and Max Buque, had good games. Max Buque was at seven 63% save percentage. J.R. Tomey was at 53%, but he had 19 saves because he saw a lot of balls coming towards him.
SPEAKER_04He had a long day. He had a long day, Mr. Tomei.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, it was close to begin with. I mean, I think it was tied up in the second. It was only 1-0 after one with Rollins. So not really, and no offense was really humming. But then Rollins just went on a run in the second quarter. They controlled most of the possession time. It was basically winning faceoffs and make it take it for them. They had eight unanswered goals to make it 9-1 at half.
SPEAKER_04And that's all she wrote, basically. Both teams, it was their second game. So they got that first game jitters out. But I gotta be honest with you, you know, um, I was really surprised at that Belmont Abbey game. I I just can't remember the last time I saw a Belmont Abbey team that just wasn't ready. They didn't look ready. I mean, Rollins, you know, take out take away the first quarter. Rollins dominated the game, dominated time possession. They dominated the game. I mean, they went eight, what, eight goals in the second quarter or something like that?
SPEAKER_03Unanswered. And and and, oh, by the way, if you look at some of the stats just in the first half, ground balls 24 to 8 in favor of Rollins. Faceoffs 10 to 1 in favor of Rollins. Look at, we've seen talk about other games where they lost a lot of face-offs, but you got to make it up somewhere. And ground balls is one of them, right?
SPEAKER_04It was just destroyed in ground balls. They got destroyed in ground balls. Yeah. You know, they you know, Belmont Abbey started out slow last year. They lost a couple of games that maybe they shouldn't have in the beginning, but they kind of put it together and had a strong ending. Um I like I said, Kevin, I can't remember the last time I saw a Crusader team kind of just get bit in the ass right away. I mean, there was really nothing they could do against that Rollins team. The final was 17-6. Logan Myers had three, Aaron Williams had two, Max Armitage had two, Logan McHugh had two, Jack Johnstone, our man, he's been there forever. It seems at Rollins, he had two. Six more players added another goal. If I named them, we'd be here for another 10 minutes. Uh Dalton Willis had a good game, uh, four ground balls. Um Freco Brady, Brady, 17 for 20 at the X was just ridiculous. Maxwell Buck, like you mentioned earlier, 10 saves. I mean, Rollins outshot them 57 to 31. Um, I mean, clears were even for both teams. They got destroyed on the ground balls, and neither team could put the biscuit in the basket on extra man opportunities. But other than that, for Belmont, Garrett Clare had two, Mike Swigert had two, uh, Garen Berkman had one, Jeremy Mahoney had one, Fogo Joe Smith had was four for 13. He had a tough day. And like I said, Tomei and Gold, 19 saves, but he let up 17.
SPEAKER_03I mean Yeah, but when you're facing that much, I mean, it was I mean, let's an onslaught. It was not what I thought. We thought this game would be close, and I I even had a note in my thing that you know Rollins, especially in the second quarter, they just started moving the ball well and being able to get their hands free, but geez, they just could not make a dent whatsoever. It was like you said, it was just domination by Rollins from the second quarter on.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And then Rollins had a short turnaround again this week, and two days later had to play Anderson, number 20 on the top 20 matchup.
SPEAKER_03Which was interesting because I watched some of that game, Danny, and at halftime, Rollins was up 10-4. Okay, so I'm like, okay, Sunday, I spent all day in front of my my monitors watching multiple games Saturday. So I'm gonna take a break. It looks like this game's over. I go off and do something. I I I come back, I look at the score. It was like 13-12 or 12-11 at that point. Anderson comes all the way back. They get down 11-4 in the third, and then they start chipping away. Not only that, but they had they switched goalies, brought in Bobby Davenport, and he was starting to make some great saves in the third. Anderson ends up tying it at 12 and then goes ahead by one with 351 left. So they're up 1312. That is an amazing comeback. They hold Rollins to one score, and they score nine goals to go up. Now Rollins comes back. Uh now that may have been helped a lot by uh Brady Greco, the face-off guy, specialist for Rollins, went out with a possible concussion. We I got some intel from a from a parent. And so Rollins had trouble after that. Um they they put a long pole on LSM. Had to put an LSM at at the face-off top. Yeah. So he won a few, he did okay, but uh, you know, that kind of allowed Anderson a little bit more breathing room to it helped them out a little bit to get there. Rollins gets one back and ties it at 13 with 221 left. Then this is the amazing thing. Look at Rollins gets the ball in the crease for a dunk that Bobby Davenport kind of stops. It goes behind him, hit the ball, hits his heel, and rolls in for the winning score. That was with 135 left. Anderson had a couple of chances to convert. They even had a man up chance, but uh with 120 left, but Max Buke stops the shot. We talked about Max Buke, their goalie in Rollins. He's playing really well. Stops the shot, they transition the ball onto the offensive side and they can run off the clock. That's how the game ended. Ended.
SPEAKER_04So they hung on, they hung on to win 14-13. So you know what? Uh all in all, a successful road trip for Rollins. They're 2-0 now, and uh, I think they they play LR next. Yeah, yeah, we'll be talking about that. And Belmont Abbey goes to one and one, and uh they play Kataaba next. And Kataba just came off a nice win over Mount Olive. So Belmont Abbey better better be strapped in because here comes Kataaba.
SPEAKER_03We'll we'll talk about that later, too. But my point here is we talked about this in the conference previews. Kataba is not the same team they were last year. Period. End of story. Yeah, and it shows so far.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I didn't expect them to do that to Mount Olive. So let's see.
SPEAKER_03Uh that should be an interesting game, actually. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03So now another game on Friday that I watched was Newberry Lewis. Lewis pulls it out 12-10. I'm gonna make this quick. This game was penalties, penalties, penalties on Newberry's side. They had 12 penalties, Danny. Six of them were either unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct. So at least a minute, if not more. One of them was a three-minute penalty. Unreleasable. I calculated because the stats don't show. The stats only show like two man-up goals by but I calculated five goals man up by um Lewis. So they capitalized. They won 12-10. When you're in the box that much, and and then the other time, even even if you're in the box and the other team isn't capitalized, you're not on offense. It was a fight in the game.
SPEAKER_04It was a fight, an actual fight where punches were thrown, kid was down. I mean, I don't know, Kevin. There's no place for that. I know we get chippy sometimes. We chirp. I know the players chirp at each other at games. Hey. Push around, yeah. That's part of it. You know, that's part of the game, you know. You know, that dominance. I'm I'm proving my dominance. But when things get to the point where we're getting unnecessary roughness every other one, and then, you know, the refs have to get a hold of something like that. That fight started, it shouldn't have started like that, because it started in goal. Um, one of the other kids got pushed into the the goalie, but he really, it wasn't a vicious, like, it wasn't on purpose. The kid was just pushed into the crease and and just bumped into the goalie, and the Newberry kids lost their minds, and they just started scrumming, and one kid was down and the other kid was punching him. Like you can see him punching him on it. You know what? There's no place for that in lacrosse. There is really isn't. And Coach Cotter, I'm surprised. I mean, no place for that coach. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it actually at the end of the game, Newberry ended up being three men down with one minute left. I mean, that's the kind of thing. I mean, it just it's a sad way to see how that game ended. It was a sad, sad to see, like you said, that fight. It's sad to see how that game ended because it, you know, it's there's no cli, I mean, it's anticlimactic. And and Lewis took care of business. And yeah, so that's what we'll say. I mean, I it was just it it was uh it was an ugly penalty ridden game that should have been a little bit cleaner. I'll give Newberry credit. I watched uh them against you, Windy, two days later. A lot less penalties, Danny.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. I don't know, man. That's just like I I don't know. I saw I saw the fight and I I I didn't I didn't dig it at all. I just don't it's no place for that. I mean, we have to we have to find a way not to get to that. And uh I think the refs have a big part of that. They have to stop that. They have to if they have to stop the game to warn a player or warn a coach, then do it, you know. Before you know, these kids carry sticks, man. And you know, sometimes a kid can lose his mind and just like swing a stick. And I I've seen it happen before, and there's just no place for it in this game. I I and I don't like it. You know, it's one thing to chirp and you know, hey man, get off my foot, you know.
SPEAKER_03Well, even like it, even that thing with the goalie, right? He goes into his goalie, a Lewis player goes into Newberry goalie. It wasn't intentional. No, I can see if you were a defensive player, you'd be you'd want to protect your goalie. I can see grabbing the guy, pushing him, saying, get away from my goalie. I don't see a fight breaking out. Right. Neither do I. Okay, let's move on to Saturday. This game, Danny, we talked about near the end, and we said, you said, that these two teams always play each other close. And this is exactly what happened. I thought it was gonna be a repeat of last year, to be honest. Florida Southern Wingate.
SPEAKER_04That was a good game, man. That was a good game.
SPEAKER_03Another a barn burner, another game where the two goalies, Quad Williams for Wingate and Mikey Simone for Florida Southern, had a day.
SPEAKER_04Both goalies were outstanding. Both goalies made incredible saves all game, both made doorstop saves, several of them. I mean, it was just an exciting game. And you know what? The difference in that game was Mr. Jacob Chiz at the X. He was absolutely remarkable.
SPEAKER_0373% win percentage.
SPEAKER_04Let me tell you something. Teams that play Florida Southern, you know, you're in for it. I'm sorry, but this team is good, man. I have them as my number, what, one, two, three, four, like they're number eight on my list. They're in my top ten. I think they're really good.
SPEAKER_03Jacob Chiz was amazing. He went eight and oh in face-offs in the fourth. He had 11 straight wins starting in the third. If that doesn't wear down the defense all the time, I mean, that's he brought them back. I mean, they were down, what was it, five goals, Danny?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was 2-1 after one. It was 4-3 at halftime Wingate. Wingate looked like to be in a little bit of control of the game. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Even with that score, you thought Wingate is moving the ball. Wow. They moved the ball really good, don't they? Yes. It wasn't it wasn't uh just dodge, dodge, dodge down the alley, dodge from X. It they were dodges, but they would move the ball quickly and they'd keep moving the ball, and you're like, they've got control of this game, even though the goal was the score was close.
SPEAKER_04And they brought it. Yeah, go ahead. Wingate dropped five on him in the in the third quarter. They kind of opened it up a little bit in the third. You know why? Because they put Logan Speth, the backup um face-off guy Wingate did. And he started doing pretty good. He won like four or five in a row. And when Wingate got possessions and got the ball, they scored. You know what I mean? Like they I was very impressed with Wingate's ball movement. And if you listen to the uh announcers for Florida Southern during the game, they were they were impressed with the ball movement of Wingate. But I'm telling you, man, if it wasn't for Jacob Chiz, I mean, he kept them in that game. That those 11 consecutive wins at face-off in the third into the fourth quarter, yeah, allowed really allowed them to get back in the game. Because they were just shooting the crap out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. You know, they were just shooting and shooting. I would say another thing, though, we talked about Wingate's offense, and this is nothing against Florida Southern. I thought Florida Southern played. I mean, look at we talk about them being a scrappy team, and you never can count them out. And they're you have them in the top ten. So they're they're up there. I thought Wingate's defense played really well. They closed openings in the first quarter and finished with big checks. They continued blocking shots, getting sticks in lanes. I thought Wingate's ride looked really good. I think that's where they controlled a lot, got the ball back on the ride and in transition. Yeah. But I will tell you, you're right. Jacob Chiz, look at Jacob Chiz won the won the face-offs, wore down Wingate's defense, and Florida Southern has offensive players like Ryan Robinshaw and others that can score. And so they didn't waste their chances when he had 11 straight wins. No, they did they did well.
SPEAKER_04Maddox Walton had himself a game for Florida Southern. He had three goals. A couple of times he he's had had had good looks and quad made saves. Quad Williams there for uh for Wingate made saves. You know, but I gotta be honest with you. Uh Wingate, like you said, Wingate's defense looked very good. Really good, like really good. And then offense, hey, the Fab Four, Cab, the Fab Four uh combined for eight of the 12 goals of you know that Wingate. So Sean Clark, the sophomore for Wingate, had three, Sam Goss had three, Joey Moran had two, Jackson Grant had two, PayPal had one, Sampson had one, Kyle Spence is just dishing out dimes.
SPEAKER_03Three assists, and Sam Goss had an assist also.
SPEAKER_04I think Kyle Spence is leading the country in assists right now. He's just like on fire.
SPEAKER_03Um what did you think? I have to ask you this. What did you think of the Florida Southern commentator broadcaster calling Sam Goss the big rig? Yeah, he's a big boy.
SPEAKER_04He's a big boy. And Sam Goss got his three by just out-muscling his man down low. Yeah. Just, you know, he just out-muscled the guys. He he he's a big boy, Goss. Let me tell you something. I was really impressed with the way Wingate moved the ball, but I knew it was gonna be a close game, Kevin. I knew it. These two, these two teams just they match up well against each other. You know what I mean? They just really match up well.
SPEAKER_03Yep. I it if this game is in 2026, everyone should mark their calendar and watch this one again, because it's gonna be the same way. Look at we talked about Jacob Chiz and we talked about Quad Williams, and I'll get to him in a second. Because the way the game ended kind of shows you the power of the goalie, right? Wingate had their chances now and then in the fourth. Mikey Simone had some unbelievable. Unbelievable saves. He really played well. And the way the game ended, so Roboshow dodges from X with four seconds left. He's on the doorstep. Four seconds left on the on the shot clock, and Quad Williams denies him right on the crease. And that's how the game ends. It was exciting.
SPEAKER_04It was a good game, man. That was a good one. It was a good one. Great game. And you know, so now Wingate goes to 2 0, and they play Florida Tech next. And I think Florida Tech better watch out because I hate to say it, but Wingate looked like in mid both teams, Florida Southern and Wingate, both looked in mid. season form. Agree. I think the only the only thing bad I can really say, not bad, but maybe that's a detriment to Florida Southern right now is they got a bunch of freshmen on the offensive side. They're getting their they're they're they're earning their NCA double A bones. Yeah. So maybe you know with a little bit more seasoning in in in the on the offense that might have been a different game. Yeah. And I and I tell you I think if you take Jacob Chiz out of the game, Wingate dominates that game. But but Jacob Chiz is amazing. I mean he is You want that weapon. He's amazing. And any team that plays Florida Southern is going to have to deal with him and it's going to be a long day for your defense.
SPEAKER_03Yep. And you just mentioned it Danny that Wingate takes on Florida Tech. Florida Tech played North Greenville on Saturday and they came out winners 14-9. Remember they played Tampa close through that first half that game and then kind of got it handed to them. They came back. Now here's what's interesting Danny I was watching this one and in the first half it was kind of like the it was the Caden Castle Rob Godomsky show. Gadomsky for um for Florida Tech and Caden Castle for North Meaville. Caden Castle had four goals in the first half. He's having himself a heck of a year so far. Yeah now it was tied 5-5 at half and Gdansky he may have had a hat trick already but then the stream dropped and I didn't catch it until there was like one minute left in the third and it was 12-7 after three Florida Tech. And then they went on and went 14-9. Florida Tech took care of business they went on a 9-4 run in the second half 7-2 in the third quarter that made all the difference in the world and you remember coach Brad Dunn assistant athletic director who came on our show as a guest analyst he's he didn't like where Southern fried lacks had Florida Tech in their menu. He says they're a better team they showed it this week and the other thing I'd say uh North Greenville went 0 for four on man up and their only real their only offense was Caden Castle with seven goals and Hayden Moffat with two goals.
SPEAKER_04Wow them boys are balling yeah yeah all right a couple others uh I want to I'll another one I want to get to that I watched Kate Castle not for nothing tied a program record in that with seven goals I wouldn't doubt it yeah tied a program record good for him shout out okay what are they now they're not the they're not the uh trail they're the trailblazers the trailblazers right I had to look it up too we both love that name and I had to look it up I couldn't remember okay so the they lost a sh you know a close one so Florida Tech you know they're good they're good they're a good squad Sunshine State conference team another one you know they're good Sunshine State had a week yes they did the other game that we talked about last week and it was one that obviously coach Dunn had on his radar was Lees McCrae against Coker.
SPEAKER_03Coker pulls it out 10-6 this was the first home game for John Grant Jr. It was 5-4 at half coker Danny Bobcats battled back they were down 5-2 and they get within one at the half they did not give up Coker went on a 5-0 run in the second half and really they scored those all in the third quarter. So now they're up 10-4 Lees McCrae holds them back they don't score Coker does not score in the fourth Lees McRae gets two. They couldn't get five that I just don't think their offense is totally there yet. They don't score in bunches they you know they they work the ball if you watch the game they've got to run a few set offenses I think but you know what they they battled like just like they did against Wingate and I think this is what they're gonna they're gonna earn their stripes and and continue to work. They battled all game the the interesting thing was team stats again.
SPEAKER_04Okay man up Coker went three for four Lees McCrae went oh for four so that yeah that's a differential right there oh yeah oh yeah but you know we we talked about coach grant you know we know he he's gonna have a you know he's got his work cut out for him but yeah you know what they're gonna get better and those kids are gonna be coached and like we know that so yeah they're in division two and they're gonna they're gonna take their bones they're gonna you know they're gonna take their shots this year but I guarantee next year they'll be better there'll be more kids on that team so yeah I agree did you watch the Malone Diouville?
SPEAKER_03Remember we were talking about I was going to that yes yeah I did I got to see why don't you talk about it first overtime game man oh man what a game what a game between Malone and Deuville.
SPEAKER_04Malone pulls it out in overtime 15-14 but man all I can say is Diouville started out on fire Kev there was like eight to two after the first quarter and here's what I'll say Danny I did not watch the first half because I was watching something out but I had the scores going up on on my my uh my surface pro my little uh my surface pro I saw it was eight to two after one and I'm like oh my god here they go again yeah I mean it was I was like wow do you Bill what are you what's going on there man what are you guys feeding all of a sudden trying to get the 27 goals again and you know what and then both teams in the second quarter kind of traded back and forth back and forth back and forth it was kind of a good game and then Talon Heath started to started to warm up that kid's a good player Cabin yeah he's a good player he wound up with six goals and an assist for the game but he had three of his goals in the third quarter out of his six and uh he had one on a man up and an unassisted goal by Smargiaso started inching them back into the game they just kept chipping away but this ain't still a win in nine to five at half yeah and then heat scored again and then just led the Pioneers to this epic comeback I mean as as evenly game as you can can get I mean it was really good both teams 40 shots each yeah well here's the other interesting this is what was really exciting at the end right Malone goes up they're up 1413 de Uville now is you you've got to think when they start off eight to two still a young team you're watching the momentum just go the other way the other way they're chipping away like come on guys come on guys and then you go down with very little time left on the clock they scored with 28 seconds left to tie it and if you saw you saw their bench their team go nuts as they should yeah it was so fun to watch hey remember in when we had the uh top 10 and then players to watch yeah I had a player on Diouville Logan Schwartz defenseman dude he had four cost turnovers in that game he was the beast yeah so for Deuville uh Stefano Evan had four goals and three assists he had a really good game Jonathan Abarno had four and then seven other players added a goal Kevin that's great when you when you can move the ball and other guys are getting shot Kent Pate Ruffalo Chalette Tall Chief and uh Gonzalez I mean they all added one uh tall chief even got four ground balls he had a pretty good game man a goalie Casey Burns for Deuville 15 saves on 30 shots he saw not too bad you know and then from alone um Talon Heath with like I said six goals and uh an assist Derek Smith three goals and one of them was the game winner Kev. That's right. Uh Zach Smargia another really good player too Ramsey Bernard had two um uh Fink and Moutz each had one and uh Caden Kraft Camden Kraft 23 for 30 at the X for Malone he had a good day well and here's the thing with John Mott his goal he was one goal three assists his goal was a goal that gave them their first lead his assist was to Derek Smith who put it in the in the back of the net for the winner. Yeah man that was a great game great game 14 14 four four 1514 overtime game so William Joel uh is next for Malone and uh Deuville will is one and one now and will travel to Post next travel to Connecticut and and face Post so Malone faces William Jewell and uh Deuville faces Post next and I'm telling you I'm really liking what Deuville's putting out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah you know 27 in the first game and 14 in the second game and in overtime post will be an interesting game with them I think that I they match up much better this year than they did last year. And don't then 100% and then Malone with William Jewell. William Jewell is now one and one they lost to LMU by three but then they came back and beat Chouan this week so another good matchup to watch next week but here's the last game we've got to get into our game of the week Danny the six overtime did not disappoint Rockhurst versus Maryville 1413 in overtime Maryville takes it this like I said at the beginning of the show was a classic the broadcaster for Rockhurst called it a dogfight and I totally agree with him.
SPEAKER_04Kansas City Missouri it was 45 degrees it wasn't too cold out there. Usually it's like you know below zero out there at this time of year. But um another really good game I mean there was 300 over 300 people at the game too Cap that's a great that's awesome first of all these two teams hate each other they hate each other it's a rival it's a rival and like both both teams both you know players on the sideline going crazy for each and every single goal there's a lot of energy on that field um on Saturday um the top 20 matchup and it did not disappoint.
SPEAKER_03I'll tell you Rockhurst's firepower showed up early they went up early 3-1 and I'm like oh wow yeah what I said on paper they're fought their their offense can really do it Maryville was not going to let that happen. They came back they counter they tie it 3-3 and then they score they actually ended up scoring four consecutive goals to go up 5-3 after one here's another one where the two goalies Brock Alila Dylan Radke both had a good game both I mean once again we talked about this at Florida Southern and Wingate and we talked about it in in the in Belmont Abbey Rollins game.
SPEAKER_04These two goalies played their played lights out yeah it was just a really good game I thought both teams played really well you know they were moving the ball they're both well coached you know Kevin Kelly does a really good job at Rockhurst and Scott Stark over at Maryville I mean they were an NCAA winner uh you know team last year um it was just you know like dogfight it was more like a middleweight heavy uh uh boxing match well look at it really was it was like power punch counter punch punch counter punch punch counter punch but you also know in using that reference sometimes there's a little momentum and a boxer wins a couple rounds in a row and that's what Maryville did it was seven four at half Maryville they outscored Rockhurst Rockhurst six to one in in the last 25 minutes within that half they had 25 to 15 shots 25 shots to Rockhurst 15 and Olela kept him in the game because he had nine saves in the first half really solid D on Maryville's side I think they really kind of left no real options for Rockers for a while.
SPEAKER_03They got caught once ball watching that's when that's when a couple times I was just gonna say they got caught ball watching a couple times in the second half and and then so Rockers scores they get within one make it seven six it's eight twenty eight in the third Maryville response by scoring three consecutive goals now they're up 10-6. I mean that so and then so then Rockers just had to chip away. They clawed their way back they clawed they were down 12 eight in the fourth going into the fourth.
SPEAKER_04And they just kept chipping man they just kept chipping they kept clawing and then just boom biscuit in the basket here we go you know all right another win at the X. Okay got the ball you know like another great save a transition you know a game in transition ball intercepted going back the other way it was just one of those crazy really good games.
SPEAKER_03Yeah that so interesting I don't know if you saw remember this but I made a note of this because Clayton Sorrat and Maryville scores with one second left in the third to go up 118. And I wrote a note is that going to be deflating for the Hawks and I thought it was because Maryville scored scored first in the fourth and that made them up like I said up by up by four 12-8. But they Rockers refused to go away they scored two in a row now it's 12-10 Rockers got within one twice 12-11 and 13-12 but can I my note was can they close? Jonah McConnell scores on a dodge from below GLE with two seconds left in the game to force overtime and then they both had I guess like two chances on during the overtime yeah Marcos won the face off and Radke made a save yeah and I think there was a penalty against Jake Greeby but Maryland D held him off and then they bring down the score bring down the ball and they score on a loose ball basically in the back look at I wrote this note this is a game where you hate to see any team lose that's how good this game was.
SPEAKER_04It was a good game I watched it twice I swear to God I was like this is a really good game. Jonah McConnell for Rockhurst really had himself a day cap five goals Tyler Smith had three Lars Jekowski had two Husby and Hartle and Toward each had added one let's see Carson Bradshaw was nine for 18 at the at the at the dot and Brockalila 16 saves had a phenomenal day for Rockhurst really did. Justin Simonson had himself you know where he's from Kev? Where is he from Prior Lake Minnesota? Ah he had four goals I'm sure the down the alley podcast boys and girls talked about him when he was at Pryor Lake Ben Mickett the uh three goals for the sophomore midi Clayton Surratt two goals and two assists Jack Greeby's a man amongst boys out there he is just huge he's big he's huge he struggled a little bit yesterday but he still wound up with two goals and an assist and Tobias Rayburn and Charlton each added one Charlton added the game winner. Shea Rayburn was 17 uh 7 for 13 at the X and Dylan Radke had himself a day as well uh 12 saves um 49 shots to the 37 Maryville over Rockhurst um 16 turnovers from Maryville 13 for Rockhurst uh both of them were very good at clearing uh Maryville was perfect 19 for 19 uh Rockhurst was 21 for 22 ground balls were even at 23 um EMO 1 for 4 for the Maryville Saints and uh 2 for 4 for the Rockhurst uh Hawks so Maryville pulls it out in a great game uh they're at 1 and 1 now and they play Davenport next and Rockhurst is also one and one Kevin Kelly got them boys rolling and they got a tough matchup they got away Tampa they they better find some more like 17 more players because Tampa oh my lord I watched them the other night play UND UNDI couldn't even clear the ball against them in the first period I think Undy a limestone played UND Tampa played um flagler flagler yeah flaggler's just not there yet they're not there Tampa just rolls them out rolling rolling rolling yeah I didn't watch him against Flagler I watched in the first game against LATMs Middies attackmen defenseman short stick D mids boom boom boom boom fresh legs fresh legs they looked very very good yeah yeah they do look very good rockers is gonna have a a a tough battle that day so okay that's all right it's only gonna get them better that's right and I think they're close I mean I don't know if they're the Tampa level it'll be a good game to see that brings us Danny
Games to watch this week
SPEAKER_04to the games to watch this week anyone who's ever taken a kid to a morning travel game notes how important that travel cup of coffee is important how early a lot of teams are getting underway Kev this week they are we're starting to get some of the ones up north underway this week bunch of teams Georgian court so Friday on the 14th I've got Dominican of California playing their first game of the season against Quincy why do I find this interesting quincy beat Davenport this past week by a goal and they were down and they came back and beat him and they played well against Rockhurst.
SPEAKER_03They only lost by five goals which you think oh five goals is a lot when we went in and did the conference previews I didn't think they'd be that close to a Rockhurst team so I think this is going to be a tough matchup for Dominican because I think Quincy is playing better than I expected which is great to see so that's why I had that on my list. Who do you have?
SPEAKER_04I like I want to see Kataba Belmont Abbey Cataw beat Mount Olive last week and I don't think anybody was really expecting that we talked about Cataw in the in the conference previews and we talked about you know they had a lot of players coming back and coach Murphy really getting his players there now and and changing the culture and changing things a little bit at Cataw and you know um if they can beat Belmont Abbey this week which I think they can they've got a good shot I think I agree. Because Belmont Abbey looked like poo poo against Rollins I'm sorry they just did it just did so if Cataw can come in and match that kind of energy that Rollins had Belmont Abbey might be in for a long day and then then people better start looking at Cataw a little bit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah but Belmont Abbey and coach Chris Barrett they are going to be wanting a revenge game they did not play like they wanted to against Rollins they're gonna I think they're gonna come out guns ablazing.
SPEAKER_04I hope Belmont Abbey doesn't have any injuries I hope it's not like you know some of their key players with an injury or something that we don't know about. Right. Well that's that could be
SPEAKER_03Maybe I'll have to try to find out. But you're right. I think that's that's something to think about. But you're right, that's a good matchup. Here's another one I've got for Saturday. Seton Hill against Roberts Wesleyan. Yeah. We both had Seton Hill in our top 10, but we both had Roberts Wesleyan in our top 20. We both like Roberts Wesleyan this year. What will happen? Can you know sometimes when you catch a team early? Does that help Roberts Wesleyan? Because this is first this first game, I think, for both of them.
SPEAKER_04It is.
SPEAKER_03It is. It's it's it's an interesting interesting matchup. Seton Hill could come away and just blow him out. We both had him in our top five, or close, you had him at six, I am at three. So I don't know. Uh but it's I really want to see this game because I really want to see how both teams start off out of the gates.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that should be an interesting one. I like Seton Hill in that one. I think that they're a good team. I think they're gonna be good. But you know what? Robert Sweslean is not a team that sucks. They're good. So you know.
SPEAKER_03If they make it competitive, really competitive.
SPEAKER_04Be a good test for Seton Hill, I think. All right, who else do you have? I'm now since Anderson won that game the other day, I want to see them play Emory Riddle. Okay. So they that's a game that I don't know. I just think can kind of like bring out the both the best in both teams. And you know what, a win for either team would be fantastic. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03Well, Emory Riddle beat Uah H fairly handily this past week. So this could be interesting. Which two years ago, that never would have happened. Right. So this this is a good matchup. I agree with you. I agree with you. Another one on my list, Danny. It's the game of acronyms. CUI against CMU, Concordia against Colorado Mesa.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Wanna get a chance to see what Mesa is like and see if CUI is uh can can can bring some uh right.
SPEAKER_03You know, you had Colorado Mesa in your top 20, and I had CUI. So this is a key early RMAC matchup, and we we get to see between you and me uh who's the soothsayer and the knucklehead.
SPEAKER_04I got Colorado Mesa at 11. They're at 11 in my top 20. Yeah. Um CUI is not in there in mine. I think there's I think there's still room for improvement for CUI, but I think it's a good game, good test for both teams. And uh we'll see where uh Colorado Mesa, what they look like.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, this is a a great game to watch. I think the Armac matchups are gonna be great this year. You gotta tune in. Who else do you have on your left?
SPEAKER_04Um I think the Montevallo St. Leo game. Interesting. What day is that on? I think Saturday Thursday. Thursday. So when this drops that night, Louisiana. So that that's one I'll be watching for sure. We'll see where Montevallo is and we'll see what what St. Leo's got. They got some transfers there. And um should be uh should be a good one, I think.
SPEAKER_03I think it will be. I think you're exactly right. Any others you've got? That's it, Kev. Okay, I've got two more. They're on Monday and Tuesday, the 17th and the 18th. The one on Monday, 17 February, is Dominican of New York against Malloy. Here's why I think this is interesting. This is Dominican's first game, it'll be Mallo Malloy's second game of the season. We both kind of liked where Dominican could go, but this is their first game, and you had Malloy in your top 20. They were number 20. Yeah. I think this is an interesting matchup to see what Dominican can do. It's not gonna be a test like, oh, what they're gonna do for the rest of the season. They've got a bill just like every other team. But two coaches, Coach Shiner's had was at Kane for years and years and years against Bill Dunn, who's a legend indeed, too, like John Jez, matching wits. It could be could be fun to watch.
SPEAKER_04Malloy's gonna be good this year, Kev. They got a couple of transfers on the offensive side. Luke Hickam is at Malloy. Former army guy. Then he went to Wingate for a year or two, and now he's at Malloy. Wow. So they got some players there at Malloy. I think they're gonna be a different team this year. I really do. And no injury to Kofought, and you know, if they can keep the injuries down, I think they're gonna be good.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay, I hear you. Last game on my list is on Tuesday, February 18th. It's because I pointed this out in the top 20. I think it's something that will show where Georgian court really stacks up, even though it's early in the season. It's Georgian Court against Mercy. It's at Georgian Court. Mercy lost a lot. Mercy has a pedigree. I have no idea. You know, uh USILA preseason poll has them in the top 20. All the other preseason polls had him top 20. I had him in mine, but because they're mercy, I had Georgian Court higher than them. What's gonna happen? I I think this is a good matchup to see. All right, Georgian Court, what what are you made of? And Mercy, what are you made of?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean, we don't really know what either team is gonna throw out there. I suppose in particular Mercy. I mean, they did lose a lot. They did. Yeah. Yep. So we don't know what they're gonna. That'll be a fun game to watch
Game of the Week
SPEAKER_04as well.
SPEAKER_03Danny, like the intro said, it's time to talk our game of the week. You kind of teased this, I think, earlier on the podcast. Our game of the week this week is Lenore Ryan against Rollins. Yeah. That's gonna be a good game, I think. Yeah, Lenore Ryan battled against Meryville and then cruised against Barton. I don't think Barton was really a test for them. Rollins rolls in with two wins. Right? Yep. They had a close one against Anderson.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So this is an exciting matchup to make it.
SPEAKER_04Not ten matchup, number three LR versus number ten Rollins. And um, I think it's gonna be a barn burner of a game. I do. I you know, I still don't know what to think about LR yet. I still don't know what to think about LR. I haven't really watched them, to be honest.
SPEAKER_03I have not watched them yet either, Danny, and that's why I'll be on travel in Europe when this is on. I don't know if I'm gonna be watching it, but I'll try to catch it sometime. So this will be interesting. At LR.
SPEAKER_04In between the bricks, not an easy place to go to if you're in the way team. If you're the visitors there. But um, let's see. That should be the that's that's a good game of the week, I think. Top 10 matchup. I totally agree. You know what? We're getting top 10 and top 20 matchups early in the season this year, Kev.
SPEAKER_03There's nothing wrong with that in my mind.
SPEAKER_04It's awesome, it's awesome.
Coach Sheiner and Scott Royster
SPEAKER_03Danny, this week we have a pseudo-player spotlight. You know, we usually have a current player come on, and players usually speak really good words about their coach because you know they want to keep that playing time. So this week we're putting a little twist on it. As Dominican, that's Dominican of New York, although both Dominicans are preparing this week. Dominican of New York prepares for their first game next week. We are bringing on that new coach again, Shelly Shiner, to see how it's going, but also a former player of his at Kane. So see if we can give us the truth about his coach because he ain't playing for him anymore, Danny. He's out in the real world. Yeah, man. That's Scott Royster, aka lacks guy Scotty. So why don't we just bring him in?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, let's get him. Shelley Shiner and Scotty Royster. How are you guys doing?
SPEAKER_01Do we good? I like that intro. I think I'm being set up here.
SPEAKER_04You may be, coach.
SPEAKER_01You just may be. Did you guys communicate with uh my guy Scotty before uh this? I don't know. I thought this is talking about something else. I thought we were gonna talk about the Eagles dominating performance in the Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_03Well, we can go there first. That shocked me, but it was kind of cool to see.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes. Um I am a North Jersey uh diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan for God, well over 40 years. And um, I like recruiting Eagles fans, and my guy Scotty Royster, aka lax guy. Scotty is a North Jersey Eagles fan as well. So, Scott, what do you want to say about that?
SPEAKER_02Uh all I could say is go birds, right? One of the uh one of one of the best weekends I've ever had with the birds taking it home. I've just been looking at everybody wearing an Eagles jersey this weekend and just was like go birds, right? Today was the first day I took my Eagles jersey off.
SPEAKER_04That front four defense, man. They were badass. They were getting after it, man. Not even sending one blitz, didn't even send one blitz. One blitz. Zero blitzes.
SPEAKER_01They were getting that pressure with just their front four.
SPEAKER_04And he's lost. He played terrible. I gotta admit, he really played terrible. But I think the Eagles had a lot to do with it. That was that was a dominating performance, no doubt.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let's just run it back again. We'll run it back again next year.
SPEAKER_03All right, but let's let's turn back to the whole thing that we're here for, which is lacrosse. So let's start off with you, Scotty. Give us your background of you and lacrosse, kind of where you guys started playing, and how you met Coach Shiner, and how bad did he want you to come to Kane to play?
SPEAKER_02How bad did he want me to come to Kane? Oh man. Uh, so I started playing lacrosse probably when I was in like sixth grade, and it's always it will it was always my backup sport, right? I was a big football player in high school, and there was a time I just realized I wanted to play lacrosse in college, and I realized it pretty late. But luckily I had a little enough friends, and I had one friend who was already playing at Cain University. Uh, shout out to my boy Matt Special. Um, they were like, yo, we'll just come to a game. And that's when I met Shiner uh for the first time. Uh what was I? I was probably like a junior or something. I don't know, junior soul. Junior junior in high school, junior in high school. And I was like, uh, this is where I'm going. I don't I don't know if I was really like this is where I'm going, but I was like, yeah, this will do. This is this is where I'm bit. And then um This can work. This can work this can work. And then I went to uh summer camp with Shiner. That's when I really started to get to know him, right? Shiner started to talk summer camp, and you know, that was the most lacrosse I've ever played because I never played summer lacrosse, but I got to know Coach Shiner and I got to know some of the Kane guys, and uh Shiner had uh Shiner also coached with my football coach in high school. He was uh coaching with Shiner lacrosse at Kane, and that was one of the big reasons why I chose Kane. And Shiner also held something in front of me that made me want to go to Kane, and it was that yo, Chad Woodson is gonna come at fresh, uh is gonna come to school and uh do a clinic or whatever. And I was like, yo, I am in.
SPEAKER_01Scotty just Scotty just name drops like so many people in that like intro in that. But he the the coach and reference uh is Dear and Dear, passed away uh in 2018. That was Coach Um Coach Michael Cleary. He was my defensive coach at Kane, and then he was my volunteer coach, and he was at Cain forever. He passed away suddenly in 2018, and um big mentor to me, big mentor to uh to Scotty and and a lot of the uh the Kane guys, former Kane guys, you know, that was there. So um yeah, huge influence. But Scotty forgets that he did send me a highlight film, and um he had one of the sickest celebrations in a highlight film. I'm like, this is my guy. I was it was like this. I I don't even want to try. Well, obviously, I can't you we're on a podcast, you can't see it, but it was like this crazy little dance he did after he scored a goal, and I was like, I'm like, all right, this guy's got energy.
SPEAKER_04Um got some hot dog in him, got some hot dog in him. Well, a little star.
SPEAKER_03That's all right, you need that. Yes. Okay, so you get there, Scotty, because I've seen this. I saw this with my son. You see, you know, it's like it's like the first couple dates. Everyone's really on their best behavior because you want to be recruited, he wants you to come. How did it did that change his personality change as a coach? And what was it like to play for him?
SPEAKER_02You know, it it is like the comparison you just made, it's like when you first with a girl and then you finally make her your girlfriend, then she shows you her true colors, right? Uh but Shiner, Shiner did a good job of being very transparent. I I mean he was really nice to me, but then uh when I got to campus, he we had our first meeting, and that's when it reality struck, when he told us like the expectations, the culture, what's about to happen. And I buckled up real fast because I knew uh college wasn't the place for me to mess around with my grades. And Shana made that very clear from day one. I wasn't worried about grades when I first got there, but Shina made it clear once I got there that grades, if you want to be badass, you better get some good grades and be a great lacrosse way. Right, excellent.
SPEAKER_03All right, so let me switch the tables then. What was it like coaching Scotty Royster to coach Shiner?
SPEAKER_01Seriously? Um I mean, I know it was awesome. It was awesome. And I I you know he's he's he knows the story that that's that's coming. Um Scotty was part of a recruiting class that kind of um we'll say wasn't it was a big class. How many Scotty, how many guys did we start with?
SPEAKER_02Many, 24, something like that.
SPEAKER_01I don't know, it was a lot. Wow, but it wasn't we'll say a super successful recruiting class because a lot of a lot of them fell off for many different reasons, many different reasons, academic reasons, social reasons, right? Just got just got tired of playing. And um, and we were pretty good, you know, those years, pretty competitive. Um what was your freshman year? 20, what what year was that? 2015?
SPEAKER_022015 spring.
SPEAKER_012015, spring, yeah, 2014, 2015. We were coming off a great season um the year before, and then we had to rebuild a little bit. So we brought in a lot of guys, and then they kind of you know fell off a little bit. Um and I know Scotty and I had I do exit meetings at the end of each season with every player, and Scotty saw that like his class was just shrinking and shrinking and shrinking and shrinking, and then I had to recruit and bring in more players and and you know, to kind of offset the the losses we had. And he he was like kind of afraid that that his core group, his three other best friends that that were part of the class of 2018. Um, I was gonna kind of like, I guess maybe like kick him, kick him to the curve, uh, so to speak, or kind of, you know, uh let them go by the wayside. And I said, you know, the right guys are stay. The right guys are gonna stay.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_01And uh and don't worry about that. Just focus on focus on you, focus on your friends and and focus on making the program better. So he went, you know, junior year. Um Scotty had a bunch of injuries that kind of held him back, you know. Um, you know, some real bad hamstring pulls, man. Uh, you know, torn, right? One was torn, I think.
SPEAKER_04Hamstring injuries of the world.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was terrible.
SPEAKER_04They linger forever, too, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so so uh, you know, I said to him, I'm like, don't worry, the right guys are gonna stay. And is his senior year? I mean, we we finished 12 and 6 his senior year, and um that was a really fun year. Um happened to be the last year actually with Coach Cleary. You know, Coach Clear passed that summer. Um but but coaching him honestly was was a dream because I I say this all the time. If I have to pick a Mount Rushmore of captains, he's on the Mount Rushmore of captains.
SPEAKER_04Wow.
SPEAKER_01If I had to pick four captains that I've had in my coaching career, which is you know going on three decades, um, well, into three decades, Scott Royster is is on that Mount Rushmore of captains. Anything and everything you want from a young man to be a leader, to lead a program, to lead a team, um, to change culture and everything. Um that's uh Scotty Royster, aka Last Guy Scotty, but uh before he was Lats Guy Scotty, it was Scotty Royster. And um just a hell of a hell of a player for me.
SPEAKER_04How does that make you feel, Scott? Man, that's pretty nice words, man. How do you feel right now?
SPEAKER_02Are you embarrassed a little bit now? I'm not embarrassed, but here I am like in public, like with uh water in my eyes. Like uh I think about my college experience all the time, and I'm like everybody will think back to their friends or like some parties or what happened. One of the first people I always think about is Coach Steiner. He made that experience one of the best things that I could ever experience. You know, he was he was a great coach, but I I consider him like my favorite uncle, uh, whose uncle I never had. And when I was at Cain, he we we were together almost every day. Like, even like I remember just during homecoming, like usually people are with their uh with their friends during homecoming. I'm with my coach. They're like, what are you doing? I mean, I think something that's awesome about it though. I mean, I'm with a whole bunch of lacrosse players at this PLL event that I'm with when we were just talking about our college experience. And they were talking about how some of them hated their coaches, or some of them like their coaches would do this and that. And here I am just sitting in the car, like being like, dude, I can't really relate because I've had a really great relationship with my coach from the time I got there. And uh yeah, Shiner's like my my guy. I know I could communicate with him all the time.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's it's funny, Scotty, because I don't know if you listen to the podcast when we had Coach on. He was getting several texts on the on the podcast with us, one from you and he blew it off. So I'll tell you, just for a second, we outranked you. Just for a second.
SPEAKER_02Just for a second. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He told me about that. I was like, wow, man, this must be a great podcast if you're not gonna pick up my phone call.
SPEAKER_04Scott, I gotta be honest with you. When we had Coach Shiner on the first time, we were doing um the carousel of coaching changes in the in Division II. You know, every year we have a carousel of coaching changes, and Coach Shiner's coming on since Coach Dominican now, and we had him on. And I gotta admit, I'm a pretty good judge of character, you know what I'm saying? And I liked Coach Shiner right away. He came in hot, positive, direct. I was like, I like this guy. Kevin and I were talking like off the record off podcast. Like, Coach Shiner sounds like the real deal, man. Like, you know, we didn't we didn't know him. We didn't know him at all. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02You're you're absolutely right. Like, I think one of the most attractive things about Coach Shiner is that he is who he is. He absolutely is who he is. Uh the same China that he gives to me, and the same china that everybody else sees. I mean, he's gonna let you know how he feels, and I think that's awesome.
SPEAKER_04See, I respect that. I respect that. You know what you got, you got what you get, and you know what's coming, and that's that's a good thing in my opinion.
SPEAKER_03Okay, enough of putting Coach Shiner on Mount Rush more for you. He's starting his, he's got to get ready for his first D two games. So that's when I ask you, Coach, how do you feel about this matchup against Malloy and Coach Dunn?
SPEAKER_01Coach Dunn and I were texting today, you know, because the weather's been a little dicey and our field's like kind of like half snow. Snowing right now. Snowing right now, Coach. No. So, you know, uh cautiously optimistic. Um, you know, I'm I'm taking over a program that has not had a ton of success. Um, but I like the way my guys have been competing in practice. I like the way their attitudes have been. Um, it is a lot of culture change that I'm kind of bringing uh to the program. And uh, you know, I I I think I think we're gonna be ready. I think Malloy's one of the best, you know, one of the better teams, best teams that we're playing on, you know, on our schedule. Um, I know they were I think they were picked fourth in their conference. They had a couple first place votes. Um and uh, you know, Coach Dunn, listen, Coach Dunn's kind of a legend, you know. Um I mean it's a very it's a it's a strong island team. I mean, there's a lot of it's it's they're all Long Island guys, and they are uh, you know, they're they're they're gonna be ready. Um, I know they got a game on Saturday against Southern New Hampshire, um, with another legend, Coach Culkins. Um but uh, you know, like I I I I think we'll be good. But it's building blocks right now with uh with my guys.
SPEAKER_03We we mentioned that in our our review of games to watch this week, uh, that this matchup, and it's a real test for your guys going against Malloy to begin with. But let me ask you this any Dominican players you wanna uh we should be watching out for in this first game? Any defenders, goalie, faceoff, anyone that you want to point out, or do you just you want us to let let it roll and see what happens?
SPEAKER_00Oh I um I don't play uh I play close to the vest. I don't know. Yeah, there you go. Don't give it out, don't give it out.
SPEAKER_02Don't let him go.
SPEAKER_01Don't give it out, right? Scotty knows, Scotty knows, like he's like so.
SPEAKER_03Scotty, just to let you know, we usually and like we told you before we came on, right? Danny and I are neither one of us play the sport, love the sport since our kids started playing it. So we're not true X's and O's guys. So when we bring coaches on, they're like, hey, I don't want to give away everything, my coach. Don't have to. Don't have to. Remember, I wouldn't understand it anyway, but someone out there, we have coaches listening in. They're gonna be listening in. Dunn will be listening in to see what Shiner's saying.
SPEAKER_04They all listen. I'm telling you now. They all listen.
SPEAKER_03They all listen.
SPEAKER_01They're all sandbaggers, they're all sandbaggers.
SPEAKER_02I can say uh there's something awesome about you guys not having a history in lacrosse, but becoming so passionate about the sport where you guys have a podcast like that. That's what we need in this sport to grow it. I love it, guys.
SPEAKER_04And especially in Division II, Scotty, because they get absolutely no love. There's a whole bunch of shit out there saying D2 ain't real. And I don't like it, man. It bothers me because you know what? I have three boys, all of them played D2, all of them received insane scholarships to go to school. All of them are gonna, you know, one of them got their master's. They both, the two oldest ones graduated. Oldest St. Leo, middle guy was at Wingate. My youngest is at Wingate now. D2 for my family has been amazing. They all got to play, they they all got to enjoy the college experience, travel. I mean, my oldest TJ was at St. Leo. He was at Clearwater Beach. They were on cruise ships, they were he had a pretty good college life, you know what I mean? Like, so D2 to me has been phenomenal and helped my family more than I can I can even describe, coach.
SPEAKER_01And now, as I've crossed over in in different um, you know, divisions, like from D3, obviously D3 to D2. I, you know, I um I I would agree with that. Like sometimes, you know, the D2 kind of gets a little bit overlooked. I will tell you this. Um doing a lot of film, you know, watching a lot of film recently of like our games and like the level of lacrosse is good. Yeah. Um, the level of lacrosse is real good. I think you know, there it gets muddled, like you know, the highest, highest ends of of D2, they can compete uh with any of the highest ends of D3, or you know, or I'll I'll say the mid or lower end of D1. Yep. Um I agree. You know, they can compete. Uh I know a Delphi won big today, a Delphi, listen, that that's that's the Coca-Cola of Division II lacrosse right now. Um, you know, and and the Pepsi might be Tampa. Um and Limestone. The Dr. The Dr. Pepper might be uh Lenoreen, limestone. I mean, these are all great programs, and they all could play and compete. I think from like a household perspective, the difference between D2 and D D1 or or certain D3 programs, like the Nescaq schools, uh the Liberty schools, um, has a lot to do with like household names. And they're just smaller schools, they're smaller institutions, um, usually private smaller institutions. So I think that's that might be the difference. But I'll tell you right now, those Delphoi boys can play and they and they're good. Oh, yeah. They're really good. I was gonna ask Scotty.
SPEAKER_03That's what I was gonna ask Scotty. You know, you I watch you on Instagram all the time. You spread the news across all different types of lacrosse. You go to the club across showcases, you're there all the time spreading the the word about the kids usually from middle school to high school. You talk PLL, you talk D1, you talk D3. What do you think of D2?
SPEAKER_04Uh I know D2, I know D2 has uh put him right on the spot, Kev. Good for you, man. Good for you.
SPEAKER_03He's an influencer. I'm gonna I want to bring him over to the dark side of the street.
SPEAKER_04Good for you. Good for you, Kevin.
SPEAKER_02I know Division II has ballers, but it's one of those things where uh where it's not the most successful thing. Like I fell out of touch with Division III stuff, and have being in touch with D1 lacrosse is challenging enough. And if I wasn't invested in it, if I wasn't doing a podcast, if I wasn't working with the PLO, I gotta be honest with myself. Am I watching this stuff every single weekend, week in and week out? I don't know. It's an effort, but like now that it has to do with my my living, of course I'm gonna keep up with it. Yeah, there's only too much spread.
SPEAKER_03You say that, Scotty, because before we started doing the podcast, I'll tell you my progression. You know, when my son was recruited, I started watching the D2 games that his team played. When he started playing, I started watching his conference games. Right? And then when we started doing this podcast, I started really watching a lot of D2. And I during the season, I watch a lot of D1 also. I basically record a lot of D1 during the season and watch those later on because I don't have the bandwidth to do all of it. So I'll give you a deal, Scotty. We would be happy. Danny and I would be happy to come on your podcast, not the whole podcast, just five, ten minutes and spread the D2 love for your listeners anytime you want us to.
SPEAKER_02All right, well, I'll I'll let the boys know. You know, all my guys love lacrosse, and we do have one of our hosts who did play Division II LaCrosse.
SPEAKER_01Who was that?
SPEAKER_02Who's that? Shane. Shane played D2 lacrosse somewhere.
SPEAKER_04Somewhere. Hey, Scotty, so how did you get into podcasting? What made you get into podcasting?
SPEAKER_02Um podcasting is funny because I never thought of myself as like the best talker in the world. But uh going on a when I thought about creating a podcast, I realized how close I was with Mikey Diggs. And he was he already had his own uh personality stuff out. And I wanted to talk about lacrosse because I feel like a lot of journalists or like the lacrosse reporters kind of talk in a way where they know everything about lacrosse. Where I don't I don't want to know about that. I don't care. I want I want to hear what it would be like if a bunch of boys, like the group of boys, were sitting in the locker room just chatting it up, just chatting out vibes and everything. And so that's what I did. I got three of my closest friends, and I was like, guys, like you guys want me to record our us chatting? And they're like, okay. And um, I already had a platform, so I was just like, I'll use my platform that I already built and use it to build your platforms and the podcast, and let's see where the podcast takes us. Excellent. Wow.
SPEAKER_01The podcast is is awesome. I like I like can can I can I can I like be like a proud Papa here? Like I am so proud of this guy. Um I I can't tell you. Like, I mean, he's he's like another son to me. Like, I just I I love I love this this young man. And like to see him kind of like you know, as a teacher, coach, and you know, the podcast, the PL, all the stuff he's done um since he's graduated, like that's that's my win. Like my wins are not actual game wins, my wins are guys like Scott Royster.
SPEAKER_04Like that, that's like like successful, successful young man after college, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but like you know, it it goes it goes deeper than that. Like it him and I, um like this guy, he's just special to me. He really is. He's he's special.
SPEAKER_02I mean like it's it's funny thinking how much how or how far I came, right? Right, like I'm in the moment right now, so like I I'm not thinking about it, but like when I think back to almost five years ago where Shiner goes, yo, come to King, the PLL's practicing here. That's when I didn't I didn't even have a career in the PL or doing any lacrosse stuff. And now here I am at their event doing content for them. And it's just like, wow, look at how far we've come since that.
SPEAKER_04That's great, man. That's great. That's great. That's a great story, man. You guys, you guys, it's special. I'm I'm really glad we got you guys on tonight. This is a story that that we really don't have on this podcast a lot, you know, to be honest with you.
SPEAKER_01I gotta Scotty. Scotty, what's your favorite D2 team? That's a that it should be an easy one, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Dominican. The one the one you're at, New York. In New York. That's right.
SPEAKER_03Well, at least you gotta shout them out on your podcast. Even if we don't come on, you can just I gotta say something about Dominican. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Even though there's like so many schools named Dominican, but all right, I got you.
SPEAKER_03We've got two in D2 now, so that's what I gotta always say, either Dominican California or Dominican, New York. Hey guys, this has been awesome having you on. I tried to get you both to throw each other under the bus. It didn't work. And uh and I You gotta ask the right questions.
SPEAKER_02You gotta ask the right questions. Oh my god, this guy's gonna get going about one thing I've ever done wrong.
SPEAKER_01I only yelled at him once. I really only yelled at him once, got really pissed off at him once. Can I can I tell that one? Yeah, go ahead. All right, so and then we'll have the debate about it. So we we his senior senior year, yeah. We were out in Colorado College. Uh, we're on spring break, we're playing in Colorado College, and um one of our one of my other alums uh worked out there. So we did a big team dinner. I invited him to the dinner, and also um, you know, uh the the assistant coach at Colorado College, I coached in uh um, you know, uh Tommy Muldoon. He played at Brown, I coached him in a summer thing. So he he was actually at the dinner too. Anyway, so we do this big team dinner. Um it did the dinner did go long because I was you know chopping it up with with uh Chris DiCarlo and Tommy Muldoon, my coaches and everything. And Scotty just wanted to get back to the hotel, you know, guys want to get back to the hotel. So we had dinner, we had dessert, and I'm a I'm a big coffee guy, huge coffee guy. So I was like, all right, who wants, you know, guys, who wants coffee? Scotty gets up and he like shut the room down. He's like, nobody's getting coffee. And I was like, I'm getting coffee. I'm like, sit your ass down. Oh my god. I was pissed because like this one alum and Tommy will do, they didn't they didn't know who he was, right? They didn't know the guy that is Scotty Royster. So I was more upset because like that's he yelled, you know, that nobody's getting coffee. And then um, you know, that was the only time, literally the only time I yelled at him was about my nighttime coffee. And then we debate how I should not drink coffee like at night, right? Because it keeps you up.
SPEAKER_02But I don't know, like it's it's ridiculous, right? I was in a situation where we've been driving around the whole day, we've been at dinner for four hours, and this guy asked the whole team who wants coffee at nine o'clock. Like, like, come on, bro, let's get back to the hotel.
SPEAKER_03You gotta stick with the story of it's not because you want to get back to the hotel, it's because it's not good for him to drink late at coffee late at night.
SPEAKER_02There it is.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's just uh listen, I I love my coffee, but can I tell you another? This is the greatness of Scott Royster. This is the greatest. This is let me tell the COVID story. COVID. You don't remember that one what was it? Go ahead. I don't remember. This is how awesome Scotty is. So we all know COVID shut down the season of 2020, right? Yeah, and um not much lacrosse was being played in that in the obviously in the spring, but then in the summer sort of things started to creep out a little bit, you know. And um I I was going to go recruiting, and um I had gotten into a car accident and totaled my car a week before this recruiting event. And Scotty, we just we were talking, and I was like, man, I really want to go to this recruiting event. Um, it's in it's right outside Philly. Um, but I I just banged up my car. And he's like, Well, my my girlfriend lives outside Philly. I was like, yeah, so he's like, Well, I'll take you. And I'm like, Wait, what are we talking about? And he's like, No, no, he's like, I'll drive you. So my guy picked me up in Jersey. I got dropped off, right? Scotty, you picked me up, I think, at Cain, right? My wife dropped me off at the school. He picked me up, drove me to Pennsylvania, dropped me off. It was pouring rain out that night, that day. Um, so I can go recruit, keep the wheels going. And then he picked me up at the end of it and then drove me to a rest stop on the turnpikes that my wife could pick me up on. And that's the type of guy he is, man. Like, that's our that's our player coach relationship. Like, that's why he's awesome. And um, yeah, I love the guy.
SPEAKER_04That's a good guy. Well, guys, we really appreciate you coming on. Coach Shiner, good luck this season in the game coming up. Scotty Royster, it was great to meet you. Um, anybody who wants to listen, hit that lack guy, Scotty podcast up and listen to what he's got to say.
SPEAKER_02Make sure you guys listen to stick talk, guys. We we love listening and we love uh dealing with people during the live. So come on in and uh listen to some stick talk. Sounds good. Sounds good.
SPEAKER_01These guys should now be following, right? Listening to stick talk, and stick talk people should be uh listening to in the creeks.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. Well, I really do appreciate you guys. Thank you, guys.
SPEAKER_03Thank you. Thanks,
Shout outs
SPEAKER_03Danny. Like I said, when we were talking to Scotty, Wax Guy Scotty, and to Coach Shiner. I didn't know where it was gonna go. I tried to bait him a little bit, but that was a fun conversation.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that was really good. I I you know how what a great love between a coach and a player, right? Like they have a real bond. You could see that. And you know what? Like again, Kev, we've never really had that kind of thing on the podcast before. A former player and his coach. I mean, yeah, it was kind of cool. I like Coach Shiner, I like what he's about, you know. Like, I like those straight shooter kind of guys. He's a jersey guy, you know, got that blue collar kind of old school in him. And you know, and uh and Scotty Royster was great too, man. Uh, just great guests. It was a lot of fun to have them on tonight. Really was.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay, now let's turn to shout-outs. Do you have any? I have a couple of shout-outs, Kev. What about you?
SPEAKER_03I got a couple myself. You want to start it off?
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna start out first with this one. This one's a good one, Kev. You're gonna like this. You ready? I'm ready. Six foot-one freshman midfielder Drew Lockwood scored the first goal in Northwood history today.
SPEAKER_03So let me, okay, let me go on with this one because I had Northwood as a shout-out because we did not mention them on the last podcast that they were playing their first game. They played it. We're recording on the 11th. They played it today against Quincy. So that's my bad for not shouting them out. I'm shouting them out now. I love this shout-out, Danny Gill.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean, they Northwood lost their opener, but they put 13 biscuits in the basket. I mean, they lost 21-13. Andrew Rogers had four and one. Dylan Ayati had three, uh, three goals, Cole Williams added two, and Drew Lockwood, like I said, the freshman midfielder. And you know where he's from, Kev? Mayor. He's from Heartland, Michigan. He scored the first goal in Northwood history. So shout out to Drew Lockwood.
SPEAKER_03I love it. I love it. Okay, I've got one shout out. And this goes out to Dylan Renner. Because he is on the Taurin list. Yes, he is. Well deserved. So good job, Dylan. Uh we we try not to say your name a lot, but we got to keep on saying it when you get accolade like that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, good job, Dylan. He's a good kid. I got another one. You ready for this one, Kev? I'm ready. There's another one. This is a good one, too. Coach Deajinkis from Bentley, the assistant coach, yeah, who we hung out with at the championship game, him and his brother. Yeah, we had a couple of high C's together. Well, guess what, Kev? He had a baby boy. He did. He had a baby boy. They had pictures, and he had a little Bentley, like winter beanie on, and it was cool. Like, I like I like that beanie that he had on. So congratulations, Coach Dean Jenkins. Uh, we we love you guys. Yeah, that's a great one. You got any others? I do. I have two more shout-outs. What about you? Okay. To one of our avid listeners, Kev, Kathy Collins, the loyal limestone mom. Yeah. DM'd us last week, said loved what Coach Dunn brought to the guest analyst spotlight last week. She said it was really interesting and a very good view. So shout out to Kathy Collins, an avid listener. We love her too. Got it. And the last one, ready for this? I'm ready. She's gonna be she's gonna freak out. Mikey Simone's mom, Lisa Simone. Her and I went back and forth last week, DM. You know, our sons played against each other last week. Yeah. And um, I just want you to know that I I I sent out her DM. I was like, Mikey played an excellent game. You know, even though they lost, he was phenomenal out there. He was. And uh just wanted her to know that. So uh Lisa Simone, we know that you're an avid listener too, so we had to give you a shout-out as well.
SPEAKER_03I love it. I love it. Okay, my last shout out once again, and you'll probably hear this every week, is to our sponsors. First, the D2 showcase. Look at if you're listening to this and you know high school players or you know high school coaches, spread the word about the D2 showcase. Those players can get great exposure in a showcase like that. Absolutely. And then to shad aromate coffee, lids, and cups. As we're recording this, Danny, it's snowing outside. And that just reminds me how great a cup of coffee is with when I that I have it when I've got it with my shad lid.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we got to get Coach Shiner a shad lid for his for his late night coffee.
SPEAKER_03There we go. So lastly, if you're listening, share this podcast with others. Let's spread the word about D2 lacrosse and that D2 is real. Yes, sir. And with that, Danny, tonight's episode, that's a wrap. That's a wrap.
SPEAKER_04Have a good one tonight, I'm not sure.
