Intro
SPEAKER_01Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stentrum, and with me, as always, is the man whose grandfather was the only one who called him Daniel, Danny Moran.
SPEAKER_02That's true, Kevin. Joe Moran was his name, by the way. His name was Joe. Oh, really? Yeah, I love it. He was like one of my best friends, man. He was like the Pied Piper. He was an Irishman. He was a cop for 37 years. He was a detective. And he loved it.
SPEAKER_01And how how how would he call you? Tell me, tell me, use your use your uh your Irish accent to say.
SPEAKER_02Hello, Daniel. Hello today, yeah, young fella. Do me a favor. Go up to the store and get grandpa two Habatempa cigars. Okay, Grandpa. I love him. I missed him. I I really miss him. He was like, he was my he was my hero.
SPEAKER_01That's a that's a great story. It's we it's funny. The reason why this whole came up, and you know, our listeners don't, but I see your name on Zoom come up as Daniel Moran, and it just strikes me as funny because I've only ever called you Danny. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Everybody calls me Danny.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, it's your formal name. You're you're you know professional. You don't, I bet you even when you're you're playing drums though with a band, you don't call yourself Daniel.
SPEAKER_02No, it's it's it they could they say just uh one of the best drummers in the world, ladies and gentlemen. No, no, they don't say that. No, most of my friends call me Danny. Like my really close friends, the guys I grew up with, call me Dan O. Hey Dan O. Remember from the old Hawaii 500 series? That's right. Some of them still do. Every once in a while, you know, I'll hear a hey Dan O, you know, hey, what's up? How you guys?
SPEAKER_01And you know you know where that's coming from, right? That's old school stuff right there. That's right. That's right.
SPEAKER_02So, how are you doing tonight, Mr.
SPEAKER_01Stenstrom in Northern Virginia this evening? I have no complaints, Danny. What can I say? You know, we're just breezing along here in Northern Virginia. Um and getting ready for another week of lacrosse. This last week, Danny, I think kind of shows what we were saying in our top 20 that the lacrosse landscape is kind of different now with that fifth year of eligibility over, right? Like sometimes you don't know what to expect. And we've had some games this week that way.
SPEAKER_02It's been a crazy kind of couple of first two, three weeks here in the uh Division II lacrosse in the NCAA. We've had some teams that usually do well, not doing too well, and then we have some teams that haven't done well in the past starting to do pretty good.
SPEAKER_01So I I I love to see that. Now, there are some stalwarts that keep on chugging along, and we'll get to some of those. But when you see some of these what we'll call upsets right now or surprises, yeah, I think it just makes D2 that much more interesting.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's kind of fun this year. It's a little different, man. We got a couple of people in the top 20 this week that jumped in, and yeah. It's just like it's been fun so far, and it's just really getting started. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're just getting started. I mean, we just saw that this week, really, where most of the schools up north, not all of them yet, but by this next week they will, have started play.
SPEAKER_02Yep, yep. So, I mean, some teams have six games under their belt already, like Tampa, right? Tampa's got five and oh already. Yeah. Some of these teams have five and six games already, and St. A's hasn't played one yet.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. I hear ya. I hear you. Well, but before we get into like week and review and everything, isn't it your time for do you have your
Top 10 Roundup
SPEAKER_01top ten?
SPEAKER_02I do, and Kevin, this is your top ten roundup week two. Number one, a Delphi goes to two and oh. They beat St. Thomas Aquinas uh rather handily, 22-4. And they face Mercy next, Adelphi. So that should be not such a bad game. Yep. Number two, Tampa beat limestone 13-12, Kev in kind of like a crazy game. Yeah, we'll be talking about that one. Yep, Tampa goes to 5-0, and they face CUI next. So that should be interesting. Number three, limestone lost to Tampa. Limestone goes to 5-1, and they face Coker, and they start in uh SAC play, conference play this week. Number four, Lenore Ryan beat UIndy in a kind of a crazy game, too. Uh Undy's number eight this week, I think. Um they uh LR beat Undy 15-13. They go to 4-0, and they face Wingate next uh Saturday in the Crown Classic. Yep. Number five, Wingate beat Florida Tech in a good game. Uh 17-9, uh the Bulldogs go to 3-0, and they face LR at the con at the Crown on Saturday. Um, Pace beat Malloy in a really good game. Um 11-9, Pace goes to 1-0, and they travel to Wilmington on Saturday, Kev. So the Setters are on the road coming up. Number seven, Rollins beat Westminster 19-12. Uh the Tars go to 3-1, and they face a really up-and-coming and tough team in the Flagler Saints next week. So that's going to be a game to watch, I think. Uh, number eight, Indianapolis. The U Indy Greyhounds. They lost to LR 15-13. They go to three and two, and they host Montevala this weekend. Number nine, Maryville beat Uah 14-3, just a stomping. Uh Maryville goes to 3-1. And uh again, their only goal, uh, their only loss is a one-goal loss to Lenore Ryan. And they face Quincy at Quincy this weekend. And number 11, St. A's. Number 11 or number 10? I'm sorry, number 10. I got 11 written down. I'm such a jerk off. 9-11. What math class did you go to, dude? Was that Daniel or Danny in that chair? That's non-Euclidean geometry. Number 10, St. A's uh plays their first game. They travel to Frostburg uh this Saturday. So that's your own. And Kev, just a quick couple of scores to note. Florida Southern got their first win, beating CUI 9-8. Assumption all over Caldwell, 27-2. Wheeling over Holy Family in a tight one, 14-10. Cotabba still stays undefeated, Kev.
SPEAKER_0113-2 over Barton. What? Very convincing. And they face Tusculum next. And they're, like you said, they're undefeated at 4-0. Hey, and how about our Virginia State boys, huh?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. They they stay took care of business against Davis and Elkins and uh beat them 17-5. Those are just a couple of scores a note.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I got I've got a couple other scores a note for you. One, Palm Beach Atlantic beat Emory Riddle 20-16. Palm Beach Atlantic is now 2-0, and they face Dominican of California next Saturday next Sunday. You talked about Florida Southern beating CUI for their first win, but Flagler beat him first in overtime, 9-8. And then Flagler played Westminster two days later on Sunday and beat them. So Flagler gets into the top 20 because of the of this past weekend. And here's the interesting stat that I didn't realize until I was watching the Flagler game. Florida Southern was like 0-8 in man-up going into that game against Flagler. They went 0-4. Never scored a man-up goal. Against CUI, they went 0-4. They still have not scored a man-up goal. That's so surprising this season. That is.
SPEAKER_02That's an interesting stat.
SPEAKER_01I'm very surprised at that, actually. The other game I have to note was Walsh stunning Frostburg State 13-8. And that is the testament of what we were saying at the beginning. Before your top 10 of like, this is a different lacrosse landscape. It is. It is.
SPEAKER_02Some of the, you know, some of the uh old hats, I guess you could say, are still in there, but they're not looking like they used to look. Yeah. Like Mercy doesn't look like what they used to look like.
SPEAKER_01Right,
Week in Review
SPEAKER_01right. Do you want to start look uh with that game, or do you have another one you want to talk about in the week in review? Well, the weekend review, we can whatever you want to start with.
SPEAKER_02Go ahead. You want to start with the the Bentley Mercy game?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, since you you mentioned Mercy, because I agree with you. We said coming into this, we didn't know what Mercy was going to look like. We didn't know what Bentley was going to look like. I I said that I thought Bentley kind of would do okay because I thought they had some some ballers that would do it. Interestingly, so they beat they handled Mercy, really. They went 11-5. They did. And to be honest, that first half, Bentley controlled it. They were up 6-1 until the very end of the second quarter when Mercy buried two goals to make it look close at 6-3 at half. But then it was 9-5 after 3. And to be honest, I really felt like Bentley, by the fourth quarter, just was milking the clock. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Exactly.
SPEAKER_01They ran a very methodical offense all through the game. It was working for them. They didn't have to rush. They weren't trying to go, from what I could tell, really unsettled offense, quick transition. And they shut down the Mavericks offense.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Mercy, Mercy looked really uncomfortable on offense out there. They could not find a rhythm. They couldn't get it going. And I, Kevin, I'm looking back and I'm trying to think the last time a Mercy team wasn't in it. I know they've always been the cardiac kids. They've got teams back in, but they always found a way to win. This time, I don't know, man. Especially like towards the end of the third quarter, into the fourth quarter. I feel like Mercy was just shooting and taking shots that were bagged. I guess they were frustrated or they felt they had to play hero ball or whatever it was. Mercy just did not look comfortable in their offense. They looked out of sorts. They couldn't get a rhythm going. And how about Tinsley in goal?
SPEAKER_01He had a game, 16 saves. I mean, we've talked about him last year. He's had some good games. That was just a great performance. Add to that that Bentley held Mercy to only 31 shots, Danny.
SPEAKER_02You know, it comes down to face-offs again, Kev. You know. Yeah. Mercy's been had they've been really good in past years at face-off. And this year, they're not as good. And I think it's going to cost them possessions. And now their offense is going to have to do things that they didn't have to do the last two, three years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then you look at Hunter Smith for Bentley. He had six goals, Danny. Yeah, he had himself a day. It's a five-five game if Hunter Smith isn't in the game. I can't say that, but I mean, that doesn't work that way. That's easy math. Not non-Euclidean geometry. That's easy math. I can count, I can do that on my hand, basically, Danny, but one hand. But that's an amazing day. Both him and Tinsley. I mean, they really balled out for Bentley. And Bentley, like I said, they just, to me, that whole game, they controlled, they controlled the pace. They controlled the whole game.
SPEAKER_02100%. 100%. Bentley was definitely the better team. They looked better in every facet of the game, Kev. Mercy did not look comfortable, especially on offense. They just, I don't know, they just couldn't get a rhythm. They couldn't find the mojo. You know, they just looked out of source, uncomfortable. I felt that Bentley's defense was just playing well and just short stick D MIDI play. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, defensively, they played well, you know. Well, and I'd say you say short stick D MIDI. If you look at the other stat I had that I found interesting was that Mercy only cleared 23 of 28. That's 82%, which isn't horrendous, but it's not at Mercy. And not when you're playing a team like Bentley. And that goes to Bentley winning the middle of the field.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Again, they kind of control the whole game. Yeah. So I'm surprised at Mercy, you know, to be honest with you. Have to keep a little eye on them, see where they go from here.
SPEAKER_01Still still early in their season. Absolutely in the season. So we'll need to say. Okay, here's a game that um I found we you talked about Rollins against Westminster. Rollins wins 19-12. And I went back, I didn't get to watch this game. I wanted to. It was on Friday. I was trying to watch it. I couldn't really get to it. But I went back and looked at the stats and looked at some things. What I found really interesting, first of all, I got some information from a source, Glenn Garvin. He sent me some really good information. He said that Rollins didn't have an offensive possession for the first five minutes of the game. And yet they were up 6'2 at the end of one at after the first quarter. That's insane. That's wild. And I think the difference is the Tars went on two three goals, three goal runs in that first quarter. So take the five out, and all of a sudden they go boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. The other thing is the Griffins got it to within three in the second to make it 7-4, but that's as close as they could get. Why? Once again, Westminster could not tally more than one goal at a time until the last two minutes, which I assume Rollins probably had some of their second, third line players in there, right? Rollins, on the other hand, had multiple goal runs six times during the game. I didn't see the game.
SPEAKER_02That was one game I I didn't get to see.
SPEAKER_01So goalie play may have been the difference. Max Buke had 11 had 11 saves, but Christian Jones only had eight for for Westminster. And I I really think if you look at it, there's just too much firepower from the Tars. Jack Johnstone with three goals, one assist, Sean Carasilio, and Nate Paolo both had two goals and one assist. And then Sam Matson, Chad Bolera, Max Armitage, and Logan Myers each had two goals apiece. Yeah. So you have that many options, it's tough to stop. No, Rollins is tough. They're a good team. You know that. The other thing that Glenn Garvin pointed out, I found this kind of interesting. The Rollins current seniors are now 20 and 1 at their home field.
SPEAKER_02That's very good. That's very good.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Like, okay, I'm going to play Rollins on the road.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. Well, set it up on the road, Coach. You guys come to us. Yeah. No, you know, schools want to go down to Rollins. It's wild. You know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, it's a it's a I I love their field. It's a really cool field. It's a beautiful campus. Except you can't find parking anywhere. You have to park across the street from the campus because you know you get towed on Rollins. But it is a gorgeous field. It's a gorgeous, it's a good nice stadium to watch a game, beautiful campus and nice weather. Yeah, 100%. But it was cold there that day. That's the other thing Glenn pointed him out. It was cold, so Westminster was a little bit more in their element to begin with. Maybe that's why it took them five minutes to warm up before they could score a goal.
SPEAKER_02Maybe, maybe.
SPEAKER_01All right. How about you want to talk Pace Malloy?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, let's talk about the Pace Malloy game.
SPEAKER_01Kev, that was a good game. Here is what I will say, Danny. And this is my last note I took, but I kind of I like to I want to start off with this. Pace in the end showed their experience down the stretch. But when I watch that game from the starting whistle to the end, Malloy is for real.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they're pretty good, man. They're pretty good. I've been saying it. I knew that this was going to be a good year for Malloy. I've just been saying it all along. Just let's listen to just the team stats before we talk about the game. Let's talk team stats, all right? 42 shots to 40 in favor of pace. 16 turnovers for pace, only 15 for Malloy. 21 for 24 on the clears for pace, 16 for 18 for Malloy, 38 ground balls for pace, and 39 ground balls for the city. Yeah, it's so damn close. Here's the difference right here. Three for five on the extra man's for pace. For pace, zero for six for Malloy. Yeah. Malloy, Malloy bangs one or two of them, it's a different game. Okay. This game came down to one or two plays, Kev. That's how good this game was.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, and the other thing is in face-off, Malloy had 14 to pace as eight, which that's not too bad, but Malloy went six for six in the second quarter. And the other thing I would say, Danny, is I saw some sloppy play by the setters, especially with clearing passes, in the second quarter, and then by their goalie, uh, Jack Kern in later in the game in the second half. Like they they shot themselves in the foot a little bit because they and first game for them, right? First game for the first time. They're not firing all cylinders. We see this all the time. It's almost every game we talked about. I definitely saw that a couple times with uh in this game. But I I don't take any any credit away from Malloy. Malloy's defense looked so good, especially early on. And they actually had the game, they got the game to 9-6 with 548 left in the third, I think. I mean, that's pretty I I was watching that score. I'm like, I they and that they really control the game up until that point.
SPEAKER_02I I tell you, I felt like I again it was a very good lacrosse game, two well-coached teams, and they were playing high-end lacrosse. This wasn't too much of a sloppy game. No, no, no. You know, like I mean, Pace did throw a couple of balls away away, though, again, those first game jitters, especially on a couple of clears. But basically, this was a pretty well played game. Tommy Corcoran got Malloy on the board first, then Danny Xavier scored on some big goal on the first uh his lot of big goals. He had a couple of big ones. Yeah, he ended the game. Yeah, yeah. He tied it up and then won it. From um Corcoran scored again for Malloy to give Malloy a 2-1 lead. Pacis Timmy Morrow scored with 11 seconds left in the period. It was 2-2 after one. Yeah. It was 5-4 at half Malloy. I mean, it's a game.
SPEAKER_01It's a game. Totally. And you, you, I'm glad you started with the team stats because that's how close the game was.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was a good game. It was a close game. And it was really evenly matched. I thought they matched up well. To be honest with you, you know, you got the number six team in the country and a team that was unranked going in. And that unranked team gave the number six team everything it could handle in Moore. More of the same in the third quarter with both offenses getting, they kind of got starting to get their groove. Yep. Yep. And they traded goals with a couple of lead changes in that third quarter. And this game was getting really good. And it was 9-8 after three Malloy. And then the first eight minutes saw furious defense in the fourth quarter by both teams. Furious defense. Both teams' defenses really dug in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no goals scored.
unknownThat's right.
SPEAKER_01In those first at seven plus eight minutes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then finally, uh who will who then Zebia. Zebia tied it up with a nice with a nice pass from Danowski. I wonder if Donowski's related to the Danowski's. I was wondering the same thing. I mean, how many Danowski's on Long Island can there be? They're all from Long Island, by the way. I'm wondering. I bet you he is. We'll find out. Someone will tell us. Both teams turned the ball over a couple of times, but again, Xavier tied it up with a beautiful pass from Danowski. That was a great pass. Um, after Malloy timeout, Pace was able to get three shots off. And then Xavier buried the biscuit to give Pace the lead 10-9. And then Declan Lander added one with a couple of seconds left in the game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, with an open net goal because Malloy was pressing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so for Pace, Declan Landers had four goals and three assists. Danny Xavier had four goals and a couple of three ground balls. Timmy Morrow, Danowski, and Adoma, each with one. Jackson Bulger and Cole Stevens each had three ground balls. Cole Stevens, pretty good player for Pace. I liked him. Jack Kern, the goalie, you mentioned before, eight saves.
SPEAKER_01Well, and then Brian Brennan had four ground balls and two cost turnovers, too, for pace. That's a good day.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, definitely a good day. James Rosslin, uh, seven for twelve at the dot. He shared duties with Garrett Garaci, who was one for ten at the dot. And from Malloy, Tommy Corcoran had himself a day, four goals and one assist. Brian Green, two goals, one assist. Noah Taylor, the former Wingate Bulldog, uh, added two. And Luke Hickum, the other former Bulldog, Wingate Bulldog, and former Army guy. Uh he had one and he took 11 shots, man. He he didn't have a good day. If I was Coach Dunn, I'd have a little talk with that boy. Yeah. Listen, man, you know what? We don't mind you taking shots, but some of them shoot or shoot, Danny. I don't know. Some of these, some of these shots, Kev. I don't know. I think uh Jake, Jake Taylor um had five ground balls. Thomas Coleford, our man, four ground balls and three close tournaments. He's he's just he's just so naturally talented. He's just the natural out there.
SPEAKER_01I I was telling a friend whose son is like in eighth grade. He's an LSM. I said, unfortunately, it would have cost him to for this game because it was on NE10, which is now uh flow sports. I said, go watch a Malloy game. Look at Thomas Kofod. Because his son's not that big. Thomas Kofod is like 5'11. He's not a big LSM, but that guy knows where to be every time to get ground balls. He's just a natural great footwork.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, great footwork. Um goalie Christian Michaels had 12 saves, and Brandon Pazienzo, pretty good for Malloy. 12 for 18 at the dot. So Malloy is looking good. Got themselves into the top 20, Kevin. I knew they would. But uh Pace holds on to win 11-9. They're 1-0 again. They face Wilmington on the first of this month. Uh Malloy goes to 2-1, and they face Wilmington this Wednesday. So with the 26th.
SPEAKER_01The 26th. So okay. Another game that was on Saturday that I just got to mention because I thought it would be a better game, but it was total domination. That's Seton Hill over Chestnut Hill. I tried to watch this game, Danny, and this the stream wasn't working. I could never get it to work. Seton Hill won 15-1. And they were up 14-0 with 5-04 left in the game before Noah Hammond scored for Chestnut Hill.
SPEAKER_02Seton Hill probably had the threes in by then.
SPEAKER_01Carter Green and Braden Lockier for Seton Hill both had three goals and two assists apiece. And then Wade Brunell had three goals and one assist. To me, it's a little bit of a shock. We go back to what we said earlier. I didn't see this with Chestnut Hill. I knew they they lost a lot on defense, but their coach is a is a defensive guru. I think he can straighten them out. But Seton Hill came out, it seems like on all cylinders uh firing and and just took it away from Chestnut Hill.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm I'm surprised at that at that score myself. First of all, Seton Hill's usually been a defensive-oriented team, and to just give up 14 goals is not an easy, it's not easy to do against the Chestnut Hill coach team. And just to only score one goal, I mean, I'm surprised at that. I was surprised at that. I thought, you know what? I know Seton Hill's a very good team. I had them in my top 10, but I didn't think they would just dominate like that. I thought they'd win, but I didn't think they would definitely.
SPEAKER_01I thought they'd win too. And I I totally agree with you. I did not see that score coming. Yeah. So Seton Hill dropped they're into the top 10 now with that one. Yeah. Yeah. Well, we and we we knew that was we both had them in the top 10. Why don't people listen to us, Danny? I don't know. Because they're smarter than us, that's why.
SPEAKER_02They got the in. We don't. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. They're on the other side of the door.
SPEAKER_01All right. All right. What other I think I've got. Do you have I'm I've got one other game. Do you have any other games? I have two.
SPEAKER_02Oh, just one other game, the LR game in U Indy.
SPEAKER_01Oh, what about Tampa Limestone?
SPEAKER_02Oh, well, that was our game of the week. Of course we have that.
SPEAKER_01Okay. All right. Go. I don't have L R U Indy. So you do L R U Indy, and then we'll talk Tampa Limestone.
SPEAKER_02Okay. L R U Indy, man. LR jumped out fast, used a fast, furious beginning to really set the tone and help them stay on the on the right track in the beginning because U Indy was able to chip away at that lead coming back. And I'm telling you, if there was five more minutes in that game, might have been a different outcome. Donnie Powell, Robert Walker, Kyle O'Neill, uh brushing ahead, and Evan Voss, who scored two, they each scored in the first quarter. Fast-paced first quarter, saw 11 goals between the two teams, and LR scored six of the first seven. It was 7-4 LR after one. I mean, they jumped all over Undy, and Undy was able to just chip, chip, chip. The second period, all Greyhounds, my friend. It was like a completely different game. UIndy stepped up and began to play more aggressively. And Tristan Schaefer for the Greyhounds buried two in that period. Keegan Lachlan tied it at seven with 325 at the 325 mark. UIndy's Nick Luttweiler gave the Greyhounds an 8-7 lead at half. They came back. They came back. It was all Greyhounds. Yeah, they held scoreless.
SPEAKER_01It's funny, Danny. This game I had on. I was trying to watch the Seton Hill Chest and Hill game. I I couldn't get it. And I'm like, wait a minute, LR U Indy's on. I think I came in and was watching this as I was watching the maybe it was the Pace Malloy game. I can't remember. But it I I I was watching it on one screen with my left eye. So I was I was tracking it. I think I got there close to the end of the second quarter when Undy was up, and it reminded me of of the game that LR played just the week before against Rollins. Because Rollins was up at half.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yes. I'm you know, I'm looking at LR's defense and I'm like, man, they're not just the same. I'm used to them just being so freaking dominant on defense. And again, if they didn't have that really fast opening first period, I mean, I think that was the difference in the game. But in the third period, LR's Robert Walker, Cameron Heard, Barry Biscuits gave LR a 9-8 lead. Now we got lead changes going on. Morgan Mattish and Donnie Powell scored for LR, giving the Bears an 11-8 lead. Then you Indy, Undy's kind of Mangan answered. Donnie Powell got his third of the day at the 3.13 mark of the third, and LR led 12-9. LR's defense held Undy to just one goal in the third while LR scored six. So, I mean, it was like a back and forth and back and forth. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01This was a like depending depending on the quarter. It's like one team dominated the quarter until you got to the fourth. And it was close in score in the fourth overall goals. But like you said, Undy seemed to be trying to gain some steam at the end.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, in the fourth quarter, uh, Mancini and Robert Walker scored goals full and all run. Uwindy scored on a man up after Walker went off sides, and UI's Nathan Lamb capitalized that, burying the biscuit. UIndy scored on another man up at the minute and 39 mark, and Jason DeVide scored on the ensuing face-off, and Undy was within within two with like a minute and 18 left. UIndy, big face-off, right? Big face-off now coming up. UIndy wins the face-off, gets it to half, gets it to the midfield, calls timeout. UI Keeglin Laughlin was able to get one off, but Nick Floyd made the save for LR and saved the game. I mean, it was a good game. It was close. It could have been anybody's game. It was anybody's game, Kev. It's just one or two. Just one of two plays, man. You know?
SPEAKER_01Well it almost seems to me from what you were saying, because I was, like I said, I was watching out of just one eye. That look at Lenore Ryan went on some real runs in two quarters to give them get them enough of a lead that you just run out of time. Yeah. Now that's an easy way to say it because there's probably a lot of other plays inside that game that could have flipped that that, right? You know, like doesn't make it a 5-1 quarter, or doesn't make it a, you know, a 4-0 quarter or whatever. But interesting. That's it's really interesting. And you know what I'm seeing from Lenore Royne?
SPEAKER_02A team that used to be so defensive-oriented and with great offense, don't get me wrong, but they had a killer defense in the last five, six years. Now, this year, it's their offense keeping them in games. If you understand what I'm saying, like along with Mancini. Yeah, well, Mancini's an offense. Yeah. You know? So uh face off, yeah. Uh 50 shots to 31 LR over UI. But Preachuck, AJ Prechuck for U Indy had 10 saves. He was really solid in goal. Um turnovers, Undy had 18. LR only had 12. Clears, UIndy struggled. 21 for 28, 15 for 18 for LR, 30 ground balls for Lenore Ryan, 24 ground balls for Undy. Undy was very good on the extra man up. They were three for four. Uh Undy was one for two. Um for Undy, Tristan Schaefer wound up with five goals. Keegan Lachlan, two goals. Lightweiler, Rockley, Lamb, Pereira, Magan, and Jason Divide, each with one. Again, AJ Preachuck in goal with 10 saves. Jonah Cole are 15 for 27 at the dot. Not too bad against Mancini. Not too bad. 15 for 27. Yeah. I mean, we Mancini's used to like dominating. For um, for Lenore Ryan Bears, Donnie Powell, having himself a year, isn't he, boy?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02He's just having himself a year, man. Uh, he's the junior now, so it's kind of like a little bit like he feels like it's his team a little bit. I think he's him and Evan Boss, those two, man. Yeah. But you know what? Robert Walker's very good, too. Oh, he is. He gets some good shots off. He had three goals. Matt Mancini had a goal or two. Did he have two goals or one goal? I think he had one goal. He was 13 for 26 at the dot. Kind of even with uh with um Shona Kohler, right? Kind of even there, right? Uh Kyle O'Neal, three for five at the dot as well. Uh Owen Peters had zero saves in 14 minutes. And they brought in Nick Floyd again and uh had seven saves. And and so LR holds on to win 15-13. They go to 4-0, LR, and they face a pretty good wing gate team coming up this weekend. I think that's gonna be a battle. Yeah, it is. And uh um Undy goes to 3-2, and they face Montevallo next. So that was a good game.
SPEAKER_01It was fun to watch. Now, the last game we're gonna talk about was our game of the week: Tampa against Limestone. Another really good game, Danny. But kind of strange in a lot of ways, too. Weird game. Let me let me tell you this. First of all, shout out to our fans and our listeners, because we said, I don't have the link yet, I don't know what it is. We got several DMs with the link. I'm like, yes, we're in. That link was not working. Yeah, I know. They would say YouTube has pulled us off, or blah, blah, blah, blah. I finally got a good link thanks to Jill Keesey, who was one that sent it to us earlier. Sent it to me again, I sent it to you. By the time I got on the game, it was 6'2 Tampa. Yeah. In the first, they jumped. You talk about Lenore Ryan jumping out. Tampa did the same thing. And then, Danny, I will tell you, after that flurry of goals that got them up, to me, it was a dead even game.
SPEAKER_02I agree. It was a weird ebb and flow type of game. Like you said, Tampa came out in such an offensive explosion. They won the first two face-offs and they had goals and in two possessions. Bang, bang. Two nothing. Quickly, quickly. And then Tampa, Mikey Flores had a really good game. Yeah. He had a really good game. And let me tell you something. Um, that fast, that, that, that first quarter was so fast and furious for the Spartans, and they exploded to a 7-3 lead. I don't think Limestone knew what the hell hit him. And you know what makes this game great? It's JB Clark and Storia, the mentor and the student, right? Yeah. Yeah. Tell me Storia didn't want to just smack him around. You know he did. You know he did. You know, underneath all of that, he'd be like, hey, coach, I love you, but I want to beat your ass. And you know, limestone is so, they're so good. They are a very good team. They are deep. They have a lot of players, they can do a lot of things.
SPEAKER_01Here's the thing. You're right. Here's the thing I wrote, Danny. Speed, speed, speed. Fast game. By both teams.
SPEAKER_02Fast game. I mean. And then I turn on the Bentley Kerr uh Mercy Mercy game. And it's in like slow motion. I was like, these two teams could not hang with those other two teams. Like I you're watching one game and the speed and the athleticism and the depth and the high IQ play, and then you go to watch another game and you see a markedly big difference.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, at least in speed. I mean, I think that they're high IQ players on Bentley and Mercy, but but you it's just they they played a slower-paced game. And you watch this Tampa Limestone game, and you're like both on offense and defense, but you notice it on offense when they're they're moving the ball, right? Both both teams. Um the other thing I would say I same thing, you know, what I saw from Limestone, and and granted, it was not the best uh view that we had. It was high up, wide angle, you could see almost the whole field. So tough to track. You don't you can't track numbers, you can't track the ball. You can kind of see, you can tell who's got it, but it's very tough to kind of watch things.
SPEAKER_02So were you watching on the computer? Yeah. I had mine on the 65-inch man. I had it, I could see the ball. I couldn't see numbers because it was so far away, but I could, you know, I could see what was going on.
SPEAKER_01But what I'd say is that the what I saw several times was limestone taking some early and I think ill-advised shots. When I say early, early in the shot clock for them, they had hands free. It wasn't like they weren't open, but they were really outside or not really in control on the run. And and I that kind of surprised me. And I felt that they kind of paid for that. They could never get up over. Like, and that was the other thing is once they scored, and you think, okay, here comes limestone, until like that third, fourth quarter, Tampa would score almost immediately after that to keep that that buffer.
SPEAKER_02You know what I think when I look at games like this, I'm like, who's in the coaching box, right? And JB Clark has been there, done that so many times. I think he knew exactly how to have his team ready for limestone. I think he knew what Brendan Storier likes to do in certain situations. I you know what? It comes down to something like that, like just experience and coaching and knowing what your what your former student would do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, you could be right. You you could be right.
SPEAKER_02But what I I felt Tampa's defense was so they they like you talked about limestone shooting shots early in in the clock. Tampa was forcing them to make bad things. Tampa was pressing out, they were almost at like the 40. You know, these short stick D middies, these poles were coming out. They were not giving an inch to limestone. Yeah. They made it really hard to dodge. They made it really hard. But limestone is so good. They have so many great players. And you know what? They started to play well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, that's what I was saying. You know, the Saints scored the first two in the fourth to get it to 12-9 with 10-12 left. The thing that started happening, though, Tampa would continue to win face-offs, which allowed them to drain the clock. It wasn't like I mean, Limestone's defense would hold in the fourth.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they played well in the fourth, the Limestones defense. They really did.
SPEAKER_01So it goes back and forth a little bit. The Saints get within three again with 546 left. It's 1310. Then they win the face-off, they score again to make it 13-11 at 5.07. Then they get it to 1312 with an over and back. It looked like to me it was like an over and back call, and then they got the goal on a quick transition. That's what I think I saw. So they get it to 13-12, and you think, oh my god. They just kept on, you know, chipping away. They just didn't give up. Limestone had the ball with one minute to play, but you talk about Tampa's defense. Tampa's defense shuts them down, does not let them get a good look whatsoever, and Tampa pulls it out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Within two with five minutes left. And then Stanton made a huge, huge save to the Saints, and Limestone had possession again, but they were unable to score on that possession. And then with two forty two left. Tampa turn the ball over and McGarry scores. And and it was it's like one of the very few unsettled goals of the game. Most of the game was 6v6, and you know, that was the one of the most and it brought it within one. Now it's a big face-off now, right? It's like a minute and 42 left. Down one, big face off. Flores wins the face-off, man. You know, Tampa wins the face-off, forcing, forcing, you know, i late in the shot clock limestone to get possession again. They cleared the ball, called timeout with 58 seconds left, and was able to get two shots off in the last 58 seconds. But Tampa holds on and wins.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, I think Tampa, you talk about Tampa's D. Uh, as I recall, they weren't great shots because of Tampa's D.
SPEAKER_02They weren't. They were just, you know, hey, we got 58 seconds. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You gotta, you know, shots on goal. Let's get shots on goal. Yeah, yeah. I understand that. I I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
SPEAKER_02No. You got somebody at X backing it up and get one back, you know what I mean? Yep. So, I mean, that first quarter was insanely fast. And I think that was the key in the difference in the game. Mikey Flores, too, winning some big, big face-offs. I mean, again, I think Limestone, in my opinion, even though they lost to Tampa, I still think they're the best team in the country. I think they should be number one. That's just Daniel Moran.
SPEAKER_01That's Daniel speaking. Not Danny, that's Daniel speaking.
SPEAKER_02That's Daniel. And uh, and you know what? Tampa's very, very good too, man. So to see, to see two two powerhouses play each other and the mentor and the student, and it's just that was a special, special division two game, if you ask me.
SPEAKER_01I will it was. I will tell you this, Danny. I don't know if I agree with you on Limestone being number one. I know that you had him as number one. I I will tell you in my top 10, Tampa was nine, you know, you know, eight, nine, ten. I forget which one they were they were lower because I just didn't know. Every time I've seen them this year, I haven't watched the full game until this one. I've watched some of their game in other ones. Right. Totally impressed me. Yeah, they're good, man.
SPEAKER_02You know what? If the USLR ILA next week has a Delphi at number one, something's wrong. Something's wrong. Because Delphi hasn't played anybody. And Limesty, Tampa and these guys are playing big boys in big games, and and and Tampa deserves to be number one, if you ask me, after this week. Yeah, well, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what it takes to move, you know, someone out of the number one spot if they're, you know, but I don't know, but for good for God's sake, I mean look at what look at Tampa's resume right now. We could not be number one. We said last week coming into this game that these two teams are playing at mid-season form. And they were. I mean, they're they are they are at they are ready. They are ready for this season. It was like a playoff game, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It was great. It was great. It was fast and furious. And you know what? There were some weird calls, too. There was some, I don't know, that gave Tampa the ball a couple times. There was one, there was one in particular. Again, there was no there was no announcers. There was no we didn't know what the calls were. We couldn't tell. They wouldn't show the refs with the holding sign or you know the offside sign. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We didn't know what was going on. Um, Tampa had a uh a man up, and something happened, and I I have no idea what happened. And the refs wound up rewarding Limestone with the ball with a free clear, and they added at the 50 shorthanded. I have no idea what happened, and it was just like just it was weird. There was just some weird calls. Yeah, yeah. I just felt they kind of went Tampa's way. But either way, that was a great, great Division II game. It doesn't get much better than that. It really doesn't. Anyone who's ever taken a kid to a morning travel game knows how important that travel cup of coffee is. When it's deep to that coffee hits your nose, you'll forget how early it is and think you're at home. Don't take your watch. A better way to turn it.
Games to Watch
SPEAKER_01All right, let's now turn to games to watch this week, Danny. We've picked our game of the week. We'll get to that in a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Everybody gets going now, Kev.
SPEAKER_01All the teams will be will be playing this weekend. Yes, yes, and let's start with that one. Your number 10 or number 11. I can't remember which one number they are. I think they're number 10. St. A's starts off and they play Frostburg State, who was number 14, St. Anselm at number 10. First game for St. Anselm. And like we talked about, we really have no idea how they'll look. That's the first thing is like, what are they gonna look like this year? Right. Secondly, Frostburg's coming off a shocker loss to Walsh in their first game. I swear, Frostburg, you know, I I didn't watch the game against Walsh. I loved I need to go back and look at that. But what do they bring against the St. A's, which isn't the same team it's been the last few years?
SPEAKER_02I don't know, man. It's gonna again, you don't know what these teams are looking like again. It's a different year this year. No Larson boys. I you know, like I don't know, man. Yeah. I like St. A's in this one.
SPEAKER_01I do too. I'd agree with you. Yeah, on on paper and everything else, you would think that they should they should do it. But where is that game?
SPEAKER_02I don't even know what that game is.
SPEAKER_01I think it's at Frostburg.
SPEAKER_02It's at Frostburg. Okay. All right. I I still like St. A's in that one. Yeah. Okay, who else do you have? Well, Kev, since we had Logan on the show tonight, and he was such a great guy.
SPEAKER_01Um and how we we are good so let's so so the audience knows we recorded with Logan yesterday as we were as we're talking about this. So he is coming on in a little bit. You're right.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, Logan uh and his Diouville Saints, they host St. Mike's. And that's a game I want to watch, Gab, because St. Michael's is a pretty decent squad, and Diouville is definitely trending up. And who would have ever thought that? I don't think anybody would have thought that Diouville would be in the spot that they're in right now. So I'm interested in that game. I think it's gonna be I think St. Mike's is gonna pull it out, but I think Diouville, I think this could be a good confidence-building game for the for the Saints at Diouville. What do you think?
SPEAKER_01I agree. You know, St. Mike's beat Felician handily 17-2. So now they come in and they're playing at Deuville. And like I called St. Mike's, you had him in your top 20. I had him as a as one of those dark horse teams, like you have to watch out for. Right. So I I do give the nod to them. Dehuville actually plays Lake Erie first. They play him this Wednesday. So by the time the podcast comes out, we're recording on Tuesday night. By the time this podcast comes out, that game is already going to be over. It will be interesting to see how De Uville plays against Lake Erie. Even if they don't win and they play him close, look out for them to play close against St. Michael's as well.
SPEAKER_02Right. Yeah, I agree. And you know what it looks like? Deuville's defense is pretty good, and Lake Erie looks like they need some offensive help. Their defense isn't too bad, but looks like they need some offensive help at Lake Erie. So another game I'm looking to see. Hey, let's see what Mercy can do against a Delphi, right? Yeah, I think last year that would have been a great game. I'm not so sure. A Delphi looks very good, but they didn't play anybody. I mean, they played.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this is their first test. Semi. Semi-test. Yeah. But Mercy, like we saw against Bentley, isn't the same team so far. They like I said, early in the season, but they've got a tough test against a Delphi number one.
SPEAKER_02Hell yeah.
unknownMr.
SPEAKER_02Dylan Rennerman goal, staff defense. Yeah. And like a million, like the Chinese army on offense. Here they come again. Yeah. With middies. How many guys scored for them in the last game? Like they had like eight different scores. Like, come on. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, another game I'm looking at, and it's the first D2 men's game in the Crown Classic, Tampa against Seton Hill. Both teams undefeated. Seton Hill at 2-0. Tampa is 5-0. Now they play Concordia University on Thursday. The day this podcast drops, this episode drops, two days prior to the crown. Now you you'd think, okay, they'll take care of Concordia. Seton Hill look, you know, I obviously played Chess in Hill and just dominated. How do they match up with Tampa Speed? And can they slow them down? That's kind of one my question is. And how do they match up on face off against Mike Flores?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's that's gonna be a key. So I'm interested in that game. Um who knows? Maybe I'll step away from the tailgate to uh go and actually watch that game. But it might it might be hard. It might be hard. It might be hard to step away from the tailgate. I think it's gonna be good when uh temperatures are supposed to be in the low 70s. Oh perfect. No rain in the forecast like there was last year. So this could be this could really wind up being a really good one. So yeah, I like that. I think Tampa's gonna win that game now. I think Seton Hill's gonna give him a game. I think Seton Hill's good, man. I think you know Coach Novotney does a great job year in and year out.
SPEAKER_01I I did not, like I said, I could not watch Seton Hill. I couldn't get the stream. I have not seen him this year. I have seen Tampa. So just um one watching one of the two teams and watching how good Tampa looks, I agree with you. I have to go with Tampa in that game.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I'm gonna have to go with Tampa, especially with you know the way they played limestone. Yeah. It's just they're just they're good, man. And they got a multitude of scorers at this point. Yeah. One or two guys over there at Tampa. There's there's a boatload. There's a kid, what's his name? Connor Kaczynski. Yeah. He he was he didn't have a lot of goals last game, but there's something about that kid's game that I like. He's just he's fast as hell. And he's shifty. Kind of reminds me of Luke McNaney a little bit. Remember? Yep. Oh yeah. You know, has that kind of like shiftiness and quickness to him, and maybe not the, you know, I think he can light shit up if he, you know, if he really gets going. So he's not the biggest guy, but he's just he's a really good lacrosse player. So I I think Tampa's gonna pull that one out. Okay, who else you looking at? What other games do you got? I'm liking the Rollins Flaggler game. I think Yeah, you tease this a little bit. I agree with you. I think, you know, I just Flaggler, um just they've been playing great, man. And, you know, and they just have their team well oiled now. And Coach Duncan in his fourth year there's got the team where he wants it to be, trending upwards. Um, Rollins, I think this is gonna be a good game.
SPEAKER_01I really think. You have to admit, though, that this for the I think for this season for Flagler, this is their toughest test so far.
SPEAKER_02This is their toughest test so far.
SPEAKER_01Not that they haven't had tough tests. Um they've played some very good teams. Yes, yes. Top 20 teams, don't get me wrong, but this is they win this one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's right.
SPEAKER_01I have to give it to Rollins, though. I think Rollins will win. I think Flagler can make it a game.
SPEAKER_02You know, I think I think it could go either way. I think you know, I'd have to give the edge to Rollins. Yeah. But I wouldn't, it wouldn't surprise me to see Flagler pull up the out pull up the upset. Yeah. Wouldn't surprise me. That's a game I'd like to really watch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I've got one other game, Danny, and it's on Tuesday, the fourth of March. It's Emmanuel against North Greenville. My question is, like, can Emmanuel continue its run? I mean, this is a team that right, and and North Greenville.
SPEAKER_02What's North Greenville? It's like the North and Down.
SPEAKER_01Just got back on their feet with a win over Anderson, but they have losses against Florida Tech and Lynn. And Emmanuel, granted, some of their wins have been probably a little bit less of a team in North Greenville, but they've dominated. Yeah like so what can I know what to make of this game. This could be it could be a blowout. It could be where is this game?
SPEAKER_02I think it's at Emmanuel. If it's at Emmanuel, I'm gonna give the nod to Emmanuel. If it's at North Greenville, you have to give it a home field, yeah, a home field advantage. But you know, uh this small school from Georgia making some noise, man. Emmanuel, ain't they? Yeah, I love it. I love
Game of the Week
SPEAKER_02it. Howdy, folks, and this is the game of the week brought to you by the two head in the priest. Bringing you the game that we believe is the best game in all of you to watch this week.
SPEAKER_01As the intro said, G our game of the week. It's on Saturday. It is the marquee matchup of the Crown Classic, Lenore Ryan against Wingate. Number three versus number five.
SPEAKER_02Danny SAC foes. They don't like each other. They do not like each other, Cat. They may respect each other. They definitely respect each other, but they do not like each other.
SPEAKER_01And it's in the Crown Classic, start at 6:30, and it's always a battle. Look at last year. Wingate lost 12-7 in a regular season, but they brought Lenore Ryan to double overtime in the SAC semis in one of the best games I've ever seen. You were on the edge of your seat if you watched that game. They lost 11-10. Lenore Ryan has had their number, Danny, except for 2023 and 2021 regular season over the past several years.
SPEAKER_02No, LR's had Wingate's number. You're right about that.
SPEAKER_01And the other thing I'd say, and then I'll get your opinion, because I know you've got it, and I don't want you not to have it. I think Wingate's gonna have a tough time stopping Matt Mancini at X, face off X. So I think their D is going to need to play stout and get their ball back and be aggressive and get their ball get the ball back for their offense because their offense can score. They need to play angry and with a purpose.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. I mean, Matt Matt Mancini's been what at close to 70%? Yeah. I mean, I mean, he he he kind of was even last week, but you know something? I just this is gonna be quite the game. I mean again, I feel that Lenore Ryan's defense has not been what it's been in the past five years. And whereas their defense was the team that was the glue that held this squad together, I feel that this year it's their offense that's holding it together. That's just my opinion. Yeah. I I believe that Wingate's offense, it's a new look offense. They're still averaging 17, 18 goals a game. They have multitude of scorers, they have a lethal attack unit, they have a lethal two midfield lines that can score at any given time. They got big Sam Goss banging down low. That kid is 6'4, 220 attackman. He's not an easy guy to push around. If Wingate can go 50-50 in the middle of the field, I think Wingate takes this game because of their offense. Now let's talk about Wingate's defense. Uh they're good. They're very good. Yeah. They're big, they're strong, they're fast, they're aggressive.
SPEAKER_01And the other thing I would say, we've seen turnover. Yeah, we've seen turnover on LR's defense. Wingates, they have a few few changes at short stick D Midi and LSM, but not LSMs that haven't played before. And their close D is basically the same. Graham Tillett's been playing great at LSM.
SPEAKER_02I call Wingate University LSMU. Because you know, like the like you know, Miami is quarterback you and all of that stuff, right? So Wingate, for some reason, Coach Boyle just knows how to pick SLMs, uh LSMs, because every single one for the like the last eight years have been just amazing. Reese Orman. Yeah, you know, yeah. Carnage, Orman, you know, DeLege over the years. Yeah. And now, yeah, now Graham. Now Graham Tillets, you know, steps in and he's been nothing but really, really good. And then they have a multitude of short stick dems that they've been running in. It hasn't just been one or two guys, it's been three or four guys. They can really, they can really do a lot of things on defense. Coach Boyle is known for their his defense. His defense, yeah. Yeah. His defenses are, you know, so fundamentally sound. They're always very big. They're very athletic. They're very, you know, they all have good stick work. This in the crown classic in Charlotte at night with the city in the background. This is going to be one of the better games all year in Division II. I agree. I agree. So it's nothing better. Definitely the game to watch. It's going to be a lot of people there. You know, the Wingate uh people travel big, and you know, the LR people travel big.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02And you know what? Some of them Seton Hill and Tampa people might stick around and watch that game as well, you know. So it should be a great afternoon. I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait to get the hell out of New York and get down to North Carolina and just watch some great lacrosse and just be in some nice weather. I'm looking forward
Player's Spotlight
SPEAKER_02to it. Now it's time for the player's spotlight.
SPEAKER_01Our first player spotlight of the season, Danny.
SPEAKER_02My favorite part, Kev.
SPEAKER_01My favorite part, I know it is, and it's been a long time coming. I mean, this is like our fifth week of the season, and tonight we have a great guest. Not only is he a captain of his team, but he's a stalwart on defense. And this team, Danny, is on the move.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man. They put up 24 on their first game or something like that. I said, wow, Deubil's putting up points.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Now they're sitting at two and one, Kev.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they are to be honest, we'll get into it with them. I can't wait to talk about this because he's not on the offensive side. They come out guns ablazing and offense. But get this, Danny.
SPEAKER_02But you know what they say, Kev. Sorry to interrupt you. Sorry to interrupt you, but you know what they say. Offense wins games, defense wins championships.
SPEAKER_01That's right. That's right. And get this guy's uh stats. Last season he ranked seventh in the nation in cause turnovers with 40. He ranked 12th in the nation in cause turnovers per game at 2.5. And he also grabbed 51 ground balls. And this season, he's following that up. He already has 11 ground balls and nine cause turnovers. So let's welcome him in, Logan Schwartz from the Deuville Saints.
SPEAKER_00Hey Logan. Hey, how's it going? Thank you for having me.
SPEAKER_02Logan, my man, how are you, kid? Dude, I've been what I've been watching you play. I watched you play a couple of times last year. And uh this year when we did our top 10, I talk about uh players to watch. This year in 2025, and you were one of the players to watch. So Kevin and I were sitting around. We're like, all right, we got to get some players on for 2025. Who are we gonna get? We're gonna get the 6'2, 220-pound junior out of DePew High School in DePew, New York, Logan Schwartz. Welcome so much to the show. How are you doing tonight?
SPEAKER_00I'm doing great. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.
SPEAKER_01This is awesome. Uh, why don't we just start off? Well, maybe not a softball, but tell us about your lacrosse journey. How, where did it start, and how did you get to De Uville?
SPEAKER_00It's actually a pretty crazy journey, to be honest with you. I started playing when I was in eighth grade, just picked up modified a little bit when I was younger. I was always a big hockey and football guy growing up. So a couple of my buddies got me going on the lacrosse field and went through high school doing that, got really into it, started picking it up, and then uh I was actually originally, so I graduated high school in 2021, and I was originally committed to SUNY Brockport my freshman year, but uh I got let go from there early on in the fall. So I didn't do what'd you do, and no, I'm just it was it was a rough situation, it was a good learning experience for me, but uh I actually I didn't end up playing my true freshman year academically of college, but my old summer ball coach, slash high school coach, basically my mentor for a long time playing lacrosse growing up, uh, was an assistant over at Madai before it closed. And he reached out to me randomly one day, just asked if I wanted to come back home. And it's kind of how that journey started. Played my sophomore year there. Uh, the school ended up unfortunately closing. And then I was here and we actually got the chance to play DiUville in the fall when I was uh my freshman year at Madai, technically. And right. I just remember like when that closed, I still kind of wanted to be close to home. And uh I just remember that game, just like it seemed like a fun group of guys, and that they were really building something special here that I wanted to be a part of, so brought me there.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. So that was one of my questions. So you were at Madai. Were they a division three school? Yes. Uh we did and then they they closed down. Now, how did you get recruited? Did you call the coach? Did the Uval, or did did did Coach Wilson reach out to you? How did that happen?
SPEAKER_00It was it was a little mutual. Um, when the school closed, I obviously it was late in the summer, so it was kind of it was scramble time because we didn't find out till I think it was like the first or second week of July. So school was nearly a month away. Right. So uh one of my old assistants was a coach, and then once I got into the portal and everything, I just started doing whatever I could and luckily reached out, got connected, came on my visit, and I was super grateful that Coach Wilson was willing to give me the opportunity to come play here.
SPEAKER_02He's a good guy, Coach Wilson. He's a good guy, great guy, and he's got the team uh cranking in the right, uh, you know, in the right direction, trending up. You know, a couple of years ago, they were a brand new program coming into Division II, uh, up near Buffalo, up there, you know, not the greatest area to recruit. You know what I mean? A lot of guys like going down south. But he what since Coach Wilson got there, kind of changed things up a little bit and and things are trending in the right direction. What do you attribute that to?
SPEAKER_00Uh honestly, he's just so dedicated and passionate about the game of lacrosse. And I think that shows in everything he does for us as a group, uh, what he does just getting us prepared, going into games, practices, doing whatever he can to put us in successful situations. And uh this fall, he had us work with this group called the program, which was a big step for us building, I think, more of just a culture and kind of that leadership that we all needed. And it was a great thing for all of us to get going. And that goes to like with the rest of the coaching staff, the assistance he's brought in. They're all super dedicated. They care about us a lot, and they do whatever it takes to make sure that we're bringing our best every day and showing up, doing what we can to go in some games.
SPEAKER_01That that's a great explanation because I think it takes a while. We talk to players at the UVA, we talk to the coach. You come to a place like that, and you're like the cornerstone for something started, and to see that from last year to what you've started off and coming out of the blocks this year, the team's gotta feel good where they sit two and one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, definitely. We've just honestly a big thing for us this spring, it's just been taking it one game at a time. And you know, we all there's we got a good culture built now. There's a good there's a standard that we've set, and we know we can compete, so we're just trying to focus on going out there and doing it each week.
SPEAKER_01So we talked about this. Your offense has come out hot in every game, it seems like. How do you try to match that on the defensive side?
SPEAKER_00Uh, I think a lot of our defensive philosophy is just, you know, we have faith in our offense to go out there and score goals, and we're gonna do what it takes to get the ball back for them. Um the one thing I really like about our defensive approach is it's more so just go do go do your thing, go go take the ball away and have fun with it and play free. And I think that's helped me a lot as a player to just grow and develop is just being able to, you know, not have to think so much and overcomplicate everything. It's just we're set up to go out there and do our thing on that side of the ball.
SPEAKER_01That's that's great to hear. Now, let me just shift a little bit. Um you were at Brockport, you were at Madai, both D3 schools. What's the difference in playing for a D2 school? How do you like what do you think of playing a D2 and then in the ECC?
SPEAKER_00I love it. Obviously, the ECC's got some great, great teams. Um definitely I never really when I was in D3, I played in the Empire 8, so there was some great competition there. Um I think the biggest just the speed of play, obviously, it's a lot quicker of a game when you get up, when you take that next step. And that was the biggest thing for me. It's just uh definitely a quicker pace of play.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So what are you looking forward to? Let me ask you this. Are there any you have any uh games set in your calendar this year that you're looking at? Or are you just playing it day game by game?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's really there's not any particular game that um I don't think we really have our eyes set on. It's more so just we're gonna take it one game at a time and worry about us and what we got to do to be successful this spring. And I think that's been a big focus and emphasis for all of us as a group, and I think everybody's truly embraced that in our locker room and our coaching staff, which has been a great thing for us.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's a that's a great approach, you know, for any team. You know, you guys put up 27 against DE, lost a close one in overtime to Malone.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was a game to watch. Even though you were on the the losing end, that was a game to watch.
SPEAKER_02And then you guys went out to Canton and beat a pretty damn good Walsh team by one. You're coming home two and one, and it's got the teams gotta be psyched, they gotta be pumped. How have practices been since are practices getting amped up? Because I find uh a lot of teams, you know, when they start a nice little role, those practices get going because they want to keep that role going. How have practices been?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, um, obviously being in Buffalo, the the weather's not the greatest. It's been a little challenging in that aspect, but I think everyone's truly looks forward to those two hours we get to go out on that field and just compete. And I think that's been a big thing for us is we've really been bringing the energy as a group and have a good momentum swing going. And everybody looks forward getting out there competing, and everybody's kind of embraced that like gotta show up and work hard to make this thing happen. And it's been a good thing to see. And there's definitely been a big shift in just overall energy and that's great.
SPEAKER_02That's great. That's gonna give a team confidence, you know, and that energy and just you know, even a close loss can help a team, you know. Hey, hey, we hung with those guys, we can hang, you know, let's play them again, coach. You know, like let's do it again. You know, when you start playing in games like that, it really changes again, like practices and stuff like that. And then how guys are feeling in confidence. When you could take an average player, give him confidence. He's not average anymore. He's way above average when you get that confidence. Do you see that confidence starting to build within your teammates?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, um, there's definitely like I said, everybody, everybody's kind of bought in and has that belief now that we can do the thing, go out there and be special, and everyone's got the ability to do it. So I think just having that mindset and that belief and the support from our coaching staff has gone a long way with just helping everybody. I think that's been personally a big thing for me as a player, too, is just knowing that I have that trust with the guys on the field, coaching staff, that I can just go out there and we can play.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, and if you look at it, you beat Walsh. Walsh just stunned Frostburg. So if you look at it, look what you guys can do. Frostburg, one of the top teams in the ECC, why not you? Is that kind of what you guys are thinking?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh we're we're basically just we're really focused on just taking it to the next level at this point. And why not us has kind of been our mindset. We know that we can go out there to do it. We have the skill set and the ability, and we just got to keep working at it. Our coaches say all the time that nothing's ever handed to you. You gotta work for it, and it doesn't just happen. So we've embraced that and we we take it, we've been taking it very seriously, just getting out there and putting in the effort every day, on and off the field, guys getting in extra wall ball time, things like that. It's been a good thing to see.
SPEAKER_02So Wednesday got a home game, yeah, and Lake Lake Erie comes to town, the storm, and they've struggled a little bit out of the gate this year. I think this is a game that you can win. What do you think?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh they have a great program over there. Uh I I think for us, I go into the mindset with any game that we can kind of go in there and take it, no matter. I'm I'm very competitive personally. And I think as a group, we're just, you know, we're focused on doing what we have to do to go out there and be successful.
SPEAKER_02All right. Yeah, I think very well said, young man.
SPEAKER_01Very well said. Your first home game. You guys kill DE. You guys can do the same thing if you want. You know, take Lake Erie out, keep them, you know, put their your foot on their throat and don't let go.
SPEAKER_02Dude, you guys beat Lake Erie. You guys jumped at three and one. I mean, that's gotta be a great, great feeling for the Saints, man. Coach Wilson's gotta be psyched, huh?
SPEAKER_00He is, and um he's been our coaching staff as a whole, especially Coach Wilson, has really really been helping us take that next level and that next step. And we have a great group of young guys and transfers, and I think collectively we have a great group of great group of guys here that are just ready to you know set the tone and get things moving and keep building.
SPEAKER_02When Kevin and I started the podcast, it it was Diuville's first year. And um, we had the head coach on uh and and and we were like, what's your plans? He's like, just get these guys on the map. There was like no plan, like there was just they didn't have a lot of players and stuff. And in just three, four short years, you're a completely different team with a whole new look, a whole new culture, a whole new approach. And as guys that like Kevin and I, who are really into Division II, we couldn't be more happier to see a new program start to trend in the right direction. I I think it's a wonderful thing, not only for the Saints and you and your teammates and Coach Wilson, but for all of Division II. You know, the more the better you get, the more competitive the the league gets, and just it be gets better lacrosse and better lacrosse. And I know personally, um I I kind of always have Diouville in the corner of my eye. I don't know why. I don't know why. I think it was that first interview with the first head coach, and it just it piqued my interest in the team, and I always kind of kept my eye on Diuville. And when you guys put up 27, I said to Kev, I said, Did you see Diouville put up 27? Like, what? And then they won again, and then you had a postponement, I guess, weather, right? Yeah, it's how much snow is up there right now?
SPEAKER_00Uh I don't know. We had a couple feet at one point. Uh, it's just also been really cold, so it's tough for that out, and that's been a little bit of a difficulty, and just travel concerns obviously coming in the mix at times, so that gets a little yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, well, yeah, I'll tell you, like Danny said, you know, if you look at it in that upstate and then central New York, like who's left? Lemoyne is gone in D2, right? You we used to say Lemoy is like the Syracuse, the D1 Syracuse of D2. To Uville, you guys want to take that. You guys want to should want to take that title. You're like the Syracuse of D2 lacrosse. The new upstate killers. Yeah, man. Yeah, yeah. All right, so Danny, we've warmed him up. I think he may be ready for the firing round.
SPEAKER_02All right, you're ready for a couple of couple of quick questions. I think you're gonna have fun with this, Logan. We have Logan Schwartz with us, folks. Big defenseman for the Deuville Saints, all the way from Depew, New York. He's up in Buffalo. He looks warm, but it looks cold outside. Mom and Dad, we got him out of study hall. We had to get special permission to get him out of study hall to come down and do this interview with us. Got about 15 questions. You ready, Logan?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_02All right, here we go. Number one mom's best meal.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, I have to say she makes these uh chicken basil pesto sandwiches. It's got to be my go-to. Ooh, that sounds good.
SPEAKER_02That's I've been missing those a little bit. Mrs. Schwartz, let me give you my address. You can send some down to Local. Yeah, we need a care package. That's great. All right, next question: Xbox or PlayStation?
SPEAKER_00Oh, definitely PlayStation. My brother and I have this argument all the time, but I thought.
SPEAKER_02What what game is he an Xbox guy?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he is.
SPEAKER_02Uh, what game are you currently playing?
SPEAKER_00Uh, I haven't been playing too much lately, but I was big into the new NCAA college football game for a little bit. That was kind of kind of my go-to. Building dynasty rosters, having a having a time.
SPEAKER_02Okay, sounds good. All right, next question. Runs or lifts?
SPEAKER_00Definitely lifts. Uh, I'm a bigger guy, so I'd prefer to lift than than run personally.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I hear you, Logan. The only place I run to anymore is the bathroom. But anyway, uh early bird or night owl?
SPEAKER_00Definitely a night owl. I find myself up pretty late for the most part, I would say.
SPEAKER_02Okay. ESPN or Netflix?
SPEAKER_00Ooh, I'm gonna have to go Netflix with that one.
SPEAKER_02Um, yeah. Currently binge watching anything right now?
SPEAKER_00No. Uh I was really into I actually just last year I got into breaking bad. That was like a big thing that everyone talked about for a while that I never watched, and that was kind of my last crazy binge watch, I would say.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, what's scary about that, Danny, is Logan may not have been born when Breaking Bad originally came out, or he was just a toddler. That's true.
SPEAKER_02All right, next question. Favorite sport outside of lacrosse?
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's a tough one. I would have to say football.
SPEAKER_02Bills fan? You're a Bills fan? Huge Bills fan. Huge Bills fan.
SPEAKER_00You've got to be from where you come from.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, definitely. And your favorite player on the team?
SPEAKER_00I know this is gonna be really basic, but I gotta go with Josh Allen.
SPEAKER_02I love his story. Dude, he's a beast. Yeah, he is a beast. He's a beast out there. Okay. Do you do things right away, or are you a procrastinator?
SPEAKER_00I would say I'm pretty good about staying on top of things. I usually I have a hard time sitting still, so I'm always looking for something to keep myself busy.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome. That's very good. Favorite class at Diouville?
SPEAKER_00I actually took a cooking class.
SPEAKER_02Mom, mom, he's he's coming after your pesto sandwiches, mom.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I saved uh I saved my cookie recipe from that one. That's about all.
SPEAKER_02I'm not the greatest cook in the world, but a cooking class. I don't know if I'd let my parents know that one. All right, who's your favorite professor at Deuville?
SPEAKER_00I would have to go with Dr. Fox Garretty. She was uh big help for my internship last semester, and she's always I've had her for a lot of classes.
SPEAKER_02So oh, yeah, and an internship? Where'd you go? Where'd you where'd you intern?
SPEAKER_00I did real estate. Uh it was through uh Hunt Real Estate, which is uh I honestly I think it's more like Western New York based, but great.
SPEAKER_02Excellent, excellent. One person who helped you on your lax journey.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's a hard one to pick. There's so many.
SPEAKER_02We've talked about your mentor before.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I've had two really big mentors in my life. I would shout out uh Coach Tom Byrne, who if he hears this, I'll have to send it to him because he'll probably laugh. But he was always the guy that kind of was really tough on me and molded me into the player I am. And I'd have to say my high school coaches, Coach Mike and Nick Yelich, uh, both big lacrosse guys. They're big football guys with me too. So they're always there for me, looking out for me and helping me get better on on and off the field.
SPEAKER_02Excellent. You know why coach is on you? Because he saw the talent. He saw the talent. That's why they get on you sometimes. Okay. Who's the funniest kid on the team?
SPEAKER_00Oh, no question. My roommate, Hayden Goldthorpe.
SPEAKER_02Hayden Goldthorpe. Shout out, Hayden.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02What makes him so funny?
SPEAKER_00He's just very witty and quick with a joke. So always a guy you can look to for some quick humor if you're ever down in the dumps or having a rough time.
SPEAKER_02That's a good guy to have as a roommate, too. You sit next to each other on the bus on those long road trips. Yep. Makes it a little bit better. Okay, who's the one kid on the team you would never let date your sister if you had one?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I have to go with Hayden again.
SPEAKER_01That's a way to start the player spotlight in 2025.
SPEAKER_00Great kid though.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome. That's awesome. I can't. I want to meet him. I want to meet him myself. Uh okay. Next question. Give us one thing about you that not too many people know.
SPEAKER_00Ooh. I would say I love to just be outdoors. I love to go fishing, hiking, all that kind of stuff. Wow. Just a different thing rather than just like sports all the time.
SPEAKER_02But lake fishing, stream fishing, lake fishing?
SPEAKER_00What kind of lake, creek, streams, just really depends. I go across each year a lot, so whatever we're kind of feeling, however, the weather's looking.
SPEAKER_02That's great. That's great. Give us one thing on your bucket list.
SPEAKER_00Ooh. I would say I want to try skydiving really bad.
SPEAKER_02You crazy boy. You crazy.
SPEAKER_00It's always something that just seems fun.
SPEAKER_02Are you a thrill seeker? Are you a thrill seeker kind of guy?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I always was growing up. I was big into like going to the amusement parks and everything. That's kind of my thing.
SPEAKER_01So I'll I'll have to give you a report. My son is just about to go. He's going through special forces training of the Air Force, and he's just about to head off to jump school. Oh wow. And then he goes to high altitude freefall school. So I'll give you I'll I'll have to send you an email and tell you how he's doing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you'll have to you'll have to let me know.
SPEAKER_01If he if he gets any videos, I'll send him your way.
SPEAKER_02Okay, one more two more questions. Give us your best lacrosse or favorite lacrosse memory.
SPEAKER_00I think my favorite lacrosse memory was I would say last year when we played Dominican. It was earlier on in the season. But I just remember what it felt like to just, you know, all the guys should just be really happy and celebrate a win. Obviously, last year didn't really go the way we hoped or planned, but that was those those little moments where you know, like you have that flash of hope and know that you can do it. It's really goes a long way. Bring it brought everyone closer as a group, in my opinion, too.
SPEAKER_02Ah, that's that's a great memory. And last but not least, Logan, give us your best impression of Coach Wilson. Ooh. He's laughing, Coach. He's laughing, he's smiling.
SPEAKER_00I wish, I wish this could be seen, but he's a big uh third eye blind guy. Semi-charming life. I wish I wish you probably don't want to hear me sing it, but he gets into it when that gets going on the bus. I'll hit one of his little dance moves, too. He gets going. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I love it. We're gonna have to get Coach Wilson on to sing third eye blind first. Right. Well, Logan Schwartz, thank you so much for hitting the firing line tonight with us. We really appreciate it. You have been a great first guest for our 2025. And um, Kevin and I wish you nothing but success, young man. You're a fine young fella. You're a great lacrosse player, you're doing great things, causing turnovers and sucking up ground balls, like you're going to the electric chair, son. You are killing it out there. I really enjoy watching you play, and we wish you nothing but the best uh and uh good luck for the rest of the season. Logan Schwartz, everybody.
SPEAKER_01Thank you so much.
Shout outs
SPEAKER_01Logan Schwartz, good guy. Very personable, just one of those nice kids. You know what I mean? Like just a nice kid, and it was great to have him on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I want to taste his mom's chicken pesto sandwich. Yeah, really. That really sounded good, didn't it? Yeah, Logan, you know, he's a good kid. We really enjoyed having him on the show tonight. Um, he's with the Deuville Saint. He was he was looking out the window, going, Yeah, it's pretty cold out there. There's a lot of snow. How much snow is there, Logan? Oh, we had a couple of feet, you know, like yeah, it was so much he didn't even know, but what a great kid. And uh he's doing really well for Deuville, and Deuville's trending up. And uh, I think it was a great first player spotlight for the 2025 season.
SPEAKER_01It was. I totally agree. Okay, now to end the show, shout outs. Do you have any?
SPEAKER_03Shout out.
SPEAKER_02I have one shout out, and that's to my boy, Coach Duncan, and the coaching staff and the players at Flagler, the Saints. You know how much I like these guys. You know how much I love Coach Duncan. Yeah, but I just want to point out, Danny, I had them in my top 20, and you didn't.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02I didn't, but you know what? This week they jumped into the top 20 for the first time in program history. Yep. Shout out to the boys at Flagler.
SPEAKER_01I love it. I love it. Okay. I have only one shout out this week as well. And it's to a player who never saw the field, but whose impact will be felt for years to come. I saw this on Instagram, and this player's name is Avery Card. He joined the Lewis Flyers as the youngest player on the team at age 14 through Team Impact. Team Impact matches children facing serious illness and disability with college sports teams, and that kind of creates that long-term life-changing experience on both sides for that child and for that team. I've seen it time and time again when when teams do this. We can say that is definitely true here. One of the Lewis players, Danny, on social media posted that Avery was the best teammate he ever had. That's great. So Avery Card passed away just recently. The Lewis lacrosse team and the Card family, we are thinking of you and praying for you in this time, but we know that Avery's legacy will live forever. God bless. And with that, Danny, that's a wrap. That's a wrap, Kev.
