SPEAKER_05

Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's Lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stenstrom, and with me as always is our version of the Crown Classic, Danny Moran. Hey Danny, how's it going? Hey, Kev, how's it going with you, man? Did you have to fight off the fans at the Crown Classic this Saturday?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, what a what a great day, Kevin. What a great day. One of the better events lacrosse-wise that I've ever been to. It was it was something else. We'll talk about it. We'll get into it. Well, yeah, we'll get into it. We'll definitely do that anyway. It's it was met a lot of people, spoke to a lot of people. They love the podcast. They love what we're doing. And uh we'll talk about that later. But wow, the crown classic, the whoever is in charge of putting that thing together, wow. Hands off, hats off. They just did an amazing job there.

SPEAKER_05

I gotta say one thing. I watched, I watched the game streaming. At halftime, they did a little kind of documentary, I guess, on the crown classic. And one of the things they pointed out was last year was the first year that they played at American Legion Memorial. And that's because it got renovated. And they are ecstatic about it because it's such a great venue for soccer or for lacrosse, because you're right there on really on top of the field almost. It's it's smaller, it's a smaller venue. It's perfect for something like this.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, it was a great venue, right now, you know, downtown, you know, Charlotte in the back, the buildings in the background. It was just a beautiful day, and it's a beautiful area, and just it was a 72 degrees, the trees were budding, the grass was the grass was green, it was a nice warm breeze. I was in shorts, it was a good day. But the the venue itself is amazing, and we'll talk about that later.

SPEAKER_05

Okay, but before we get moving uh into the week in review, we've got

Top 10 Rpundup

SPEAKER_05

the top 10 roundup.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, you hit me up early. The top 10 roundup. All right, ladies and gentlemen. This week's top 10 roundup, we got some big ones in this week, Kev. Number one, Tampa falls. Down goes Frasia. Number one, Tampa lost to number 20, Frostburg State 14-12. We'll talk about that game too, Kev. Lemoyne, number two, beat number seven, U Indy. They held on to win that game. They won 15-13 and Lemoyne sits at 3-0. Number three, Mercyhurst beat Meryville 13-9, and Mercyville, uh Mercyhurst, why do I keep saying Mercyville? I'm a knucklehead tonight. Mercyhurst still sits at 3-0. Adelphi beat AIC rather handily, 10-3 and sits uh undefeated at 4-0. Number five, Mercy beat Seton Hill in a pretty decent game, 18-15, and Mercy sits at 4-1. LR at number 6 beat Belmont Abbey 20-10, and Lenore Ryan sits at 5-1. Number 7, U Indy lost to number 2 Lemoyne. Number eight, Rollins beat Flagler 17-6. Rollins looks good, Kevin. Rollins sits undefeated at 14-0. Number nine, Wingate beat the number 10 Limestone Saints in the Crown Classic, 19 to 14, and the Bulldogs sit at 4-1. And number 10 Limestone lost to number nine Wingate. So that's your top 10 Roundup.

SPEAKER_05

That was awesome, Danny. I just have to do one. Damn, I forgot the regal music at the end. That's right. We have one addendum to that, and that is that Rollins is not 14-0. They're 4-0. They were 14-0. They were they probably. Did I say 14? You did. You did. Sorry. Just a slip of the tongue. Just a slip of the tongue. It's all good. I apologize for that.

SPEAKER_02

They are. They're not 14-0. So don't listen to me. They're only 4-0. But they mercy. Mercyville. Mercyville. Mercyville is a good thing. That's a new school coming in. That's right.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, that was a long weekend. Had a long weekend. I tell you what. I like the top 10 roundup, let

Week in Review

SPEAKER_05

me tell you. Okay, but let's move on. And we're going to start off as I called it. Let's start off with David slaying Goliath. You called down goes Frasier. I went biblical on my my side of the house here, but Frostburg at number 20 beats number one Tampa, 14-12.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, man. I think I am in shock just like the rest of the country's in shock. Are you in shock?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, so I'll tell you what, Danny, was really funny. I turned on the game, it had already started, and I turned it on right when Frostburg scored the first goal with a beautiful inside pass on the crease to Jake Bowman. You know, Coach Gardelman said on our show last week that they they don't preach perfection, they preach improvement. And if you've watched all three of their games they played, that's exactly what they've done. I mean, St. Rose, they had a several mistakes, a lot of mistakes. It was it was a on both sides of the uh field that day, both teams. Lake Erie, I thought they had a very strong effort, but against Tampa, it was almost flawless execution, and they had to do that to beat them.

SPEAKER_02

Kevin, I it's like I watched two different teams though in Frostburg State in the last three weeks. They barely got by St. Rose, they barely got by Lake Erie. And then they come down and they take down number one. And they played a very good game defensively. They really, really did. They played solid defense. They worked that six on six, like you and I talked about. They played methodically, they they did not rush, they didn't take very many bad shots. Um but the difference in the game, Kevin, that I think I think that Tampa's defense didn't come to play. There was no, I didn't see any fire out of them. I didn't see any extra energy. I didn't I didn't see that fire that comes out of that team on the defensive side. I didn't see it. I didn't see it. I didn't see it all day. You know, so playing playing defense with sticks instead of moving your hands. Frostburg State's attackmen, they you know, they they attacked from X, they they dodged from up top, they did the two men on the wing, they did a lot of different things offensively to keep Tampa at bay. But you know what? They were beating their one-on-one matchups.

SPEAKER_05

They did several times, they did, but they moved the ball well. There were several times where it was just moving the ball that got the score, and then the next time it's beating the man, and sometimes it wasn't beating the man necessarily on the dodge, but it's getting into your your your favorite spot. And I think they were patient, they were patient waiting for that that right shot. They didn't really rush shots, they used the lockers.

SPEAKER_02

I agree with you, and I agree with you. They didn't rush, and you're right, man. They moved the ball well, and they got defensemen to move and and picked their spots and and made the right moves at the right time. They played a really good game.

SPEAKER_05

And then I would say on the opposite side, so you talked about the defense, and I agree with you. I saw Frostburg state, they were getting sticks on sticks, sticks on hands. They were doing a good job of trying to not let Tampa get in good shooting positions. They held Tampa to 39 shots, Danny. 39 shots.

SPEAKER_02

They held him to one goal in the third quarter, Kevin.

SPEAKER_05

I mean, that's they held him to one goal in the third quarter. Tampa, I never expected that out of Frostburg. I I you know, and so we talk about it, but but then up for just really quickly, Tampa's offense. You know, we talked about it last week of how they move so well off ball that you always got to have your head on a swivel. And there were times in the second half, I was trying to see if they were moving off ball a lot. And I didn't see it as much as I usually do. I didn't see the cutters, a lot of people cutting. There's some I wouldn't say it was standing around, but there wasn't, there was maybe one guy moving instead of three or four guys moving.

SPEAKER_02

You know, I just I just feel that you know, when Tampa was down at halftime, uh maybe the offense was trying to push for Tampa a little bit, maybe too much, maybe taking poor shots, ill-advised shots, not working the clock as much as they usually do, not getting that open man. I'm gonna tell you something right now. Frostburg State's defense played real good. Seamus Carney, Luke McCullough, Jake Sprechter, Landon Blues, they all played at the top of their game. Probably the best game of their lives.

SPEAKER_05

And then add in Meckley and goal. He he had 11 saves. It was only 47% save percentage, but he had saves at the right time.

SPEAKER_02

He had clutch saves, right time, perfect saves at the right time. He had clutch saves. He played well as as well in in pipe.

SPEAKER_05

You're right. And and then you look on the offensive side, Jake Bowman, four goals, Bubba Love, three goals, two assists, Tanner Donaldson, three goals, Austin Snipes, two goals and two assists. I mean, they spread it around as well. I mean, they just had a complete game for themselves. And I'll tell you what, it when it was six three after one, I'm thinking, okay, when it when is Tampa gonna wake up? That's what I'm thinking in my mind, but it they always seem to just, and you and I talked about this uh before the podcast. It just seems to me some of sometimes I thought Tampa was was gonna get back into and they got close. They brought it back eight, seven with two thirty-five left in the first half, and then it was 10-7 and a half. Frostburg brought it right back, and I think part of it is when I saw Tampa run with the ball and in transition or unsettled, boom, they got a goal. I'm thinking, okay, here they come. But Frostburg got them in playing six on six. They did not, in my opinion, want to get in a track meet with Tampa because they were gonna lose. You saw it with Lenore Ryan because they're both fast, very athletic teams. Frostburg State is a good team, but they don't think match up as athletic across the board as a team like Tampa. I agree. But on Saturday, they played their game to, like I said, I think close to flawless execution. Did they have turnovers? Yeah, but that but they played a complete game.

SPEAKER_02

You know, the if you look at the team stats, they're pretty pretty even. I mean, yeah, Tampa had the edge on shots, 39 to 33, but they both had 23 goals on uh shots on goal. Um Tampa had 18 turnovers. Uh Frostburg State had 17. Both teams were perfect on the clears. Both teams were perfect on clears. Um, Tampa had a little bit of the edge on the face-offs, say of 16 or 13. Both teams had big goose eggs in in the uh that amazed me. Over 11, both teams. Well, you know, Tampa had six opportunities to put another biscuit in the basket and couldn't get it done. So you got a hat hats off to Coach Gardelman and and the Frostburg State boys because they played their hearts out. But again, I'm telling you right now, I don't think Tampa's defense came to play. I didn't see that urgency, I didn't see that fire that I usually see. I didn't see that, you know, they were playing, you know, defense with sticks instead of their feet, you know, getting and letting them in the some of the percentage shots that they were Frostburg was able to get, because you see you were right. They were methodical with the ball. They moved it, got it to the right spot. They were getting high percentage shots. You know, maybe Malik Homer didn't have the best game of his career, but some of those shots were so close, it would be almost impossible to and then some of the outside shots, the the the 10 yarders that uh like Jake Bowman had a few of them, he was open.

SPEAKER_05

It wasn't like he had some guy on him and he was shooting. He he was in his office twice shooting from a spot. And yeah, so yeah, and and and you know, we talked about this in the conference preview when we did our top 20. Tampa, without a doubt, number one. But it is so tough to keep that level of, you know, just keep mentally, I think, not physically, mentally at that level, because everyone's gunning for you.

SPEAKER_02

And you know what, Kevin? I was just gonna say that. There's there's a couple of teams in the Division II ranks that just have a mark on their back because of who they are, and Tampa is one of them. You know, Tampa went 22 and you know, oh last year. They kind of smacked around everybody that came in front of them. And now, you know, everybody knows when they're gonna play Tampa, they're circling that game. That's a game that they're circling on their on their schedules. So they know Tampa's got to know that these teams are gonna bring their A game, they're gonna bring everything they got. And and that's what they got in a in a spunky, feisty, well-coached Frostburg State team the other night.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, it was it was a great game to watch. Okay, let's now move to the Crown Classic. Limestone number 10 against Wingate, number nine. You were there, Danny. What do you think?

SPEAKER_02

It was a great game. I wingate looked very, very good to me, Kevin. Daddy blew. Yeah, I mean, limestone scored the first goal, and Wingate, I think, just scored six in a row.

SPEAKER_05

And I will tell you, this is what these are my notes at the not only at the beginning of the game, but throughout. I said both teams were playing hard every second of that game. But Wingate, except for some penalties in the fourth quarter when they had a rash of them, and I'm not rash, two or three, where loud limestone back in, they put on a clinic offensively and defensively. They put on a clinic all night long.

SPEAKER_02

This is probably the best game defensively that uh the Bulldogs have played this so far this year. Um, John Capone was really good in goal. Um, he made some really big saves at really clutch times. And you know what? I gotta give a shout-out. We always talk about Riley, we always talk about Kreco, we always talk about the offense when we talk about Wingate, especially the last two years. They've been so lethal offensively. And we we know that they're always in like the top 10, top 12 defense, but we don't talk about those defensive guys. But this this week you have to talk about the Bulldogs defense. I mean, LSM Joe Carnage, kid's a baller, man. Yeah, he had six round balls and two calls turnovers. Um, and the defensive poles, Nick Arnold. Defensive player of the week, Joe Carnage. Oh, really? Yep. Zach defensive player of the week. Wow, good for him because he really had a and specialist of the week is John Capone. Really? Well, wow, there you go. So two bulldogs go crazy and have a great game, you know. Uh Trent Connolly had a good game. Peyton Farley. Let me tell you something about that guy. He is he's um, he's really, he's really good. He's big, man. He's like the biggest guy on the field, and he is fast as hell, and he has great stick skills, and he's got great footwork, too. You know, like he's a really, really talented player. He was pressing out on his man. Nobody scored on him all day. Nobody, nobody scored on him all day. He was he was just amazing, but he had that pole goal, he had that he had a he had a goal for himself, and uh nobody was getting in front of that freight train, nobody, because he was going full speed. Uh you'd be crazy to get in front of him and try to take that away from him. And he just but let me tell you something. I gotta tell you something else. Danny Riley had himself a game, and that behind the back pass that he had for an assist.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, I'll tell you right now, the the announcers, the announcers, the commentators, they said that's an ESPN top 10. It should be. We made he said we need to get that in there. Basically, it was spot on.

SPEAKER_02

Kevin, it was an eight-yard dart threaded between three defenders right on the doorstep. Perfect feed for Greco, man. Unbelievable pass, unbelievable. So those two guys, man, between Riley and Greco, Riley had six goals and assists. Greco had four goals and six assists. He's the general, Cav. Yeah, yeah. He he was no, he was the general in the entire stadium. That kid is perhaps maybe the best attackman I've ever seen with my eyes.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, without a doubt. Yeah, 100%. 100% he is.

SPEAKER_02

What he can do with a ball, what he can do to a defense is amazing. He sat out there, he dictated that game, Willie Greco. He dictated that game offensively. You know, and and Danny just can take he's amazing. So he's gonna get his. But there was a lot of other players that contributed in that game too, man. Yeah. And uh Kyle Spound, the the the freshman midfielders that we talked about in the beginning of the season that Coach Boyle recruited, that that lacked in the past some of the you know, some of that uh extra zip from the midfielders. And uh Joe Moran had four and one. Yeah, Aiden McMahon. Well, he's a sophomore, Aiden McMahon. He had one, but Pay Pack had one, Kyle Spence had one. These freshman midfielders are contributing, are contributing hard. And there's a uh there's another midfielder on this team that I just really, really like, Jackson Grant. He's a two-way, he just he's a ground ball kid, he's athletic as hell, and I just think he's another one to watch out for. So now when you play the Wingate Bulldogs, who the hell do you guard? Who do you guard? They looked real lethal the other day. And limestone's a good team, Kevin. I, you know, we're starting all talking about Wingate right now. But let me tell you something. Mike McGarry is a beast. He's a beast. He's a big boy, he plays hard, he knows how to get rid of the ball with either hand. It doesn't matter whether he's in tight or loose, he can get balls off. He had four goals. Chris Erneston, who's a limestone, that kid's great, man. Yeah, yeah, he's great. And then two and two, Austin Lameron had three, and Corey Lyons in goal.

SPEAKER_05

That's what I was just about to say. He he had 19 goals against him, but he had some great saves. And a lot of those goals, he wasn't gonna stop.

SPEAKER_02

Well, you know, when you when you shoot 50 shot getting shot at like every 30 seconds, it's tough, man. Wingate looked really good.

SPEAKER_05

Wingate looked really, really good. That's what I what I was saying about how both teams played hard every second. I mean, look at I I said it earlier. Wingate had a few penalties in the fourth quarter. One was unreleasable for two minutes. Limestone scores, and luckily James Cotkamp got the face-off for Wingate to be able to run out the clock. But that was 17-11, and based on those penalties, before you knew it was 17-14, and you're like, okay, now then, like you said, Kyle Spence, he got that goal to make it 18-14, just to take it out of reach. That's basically it. That goal right there by him, his only goal as and where he dodged across, not even in the middle, like in the middle of the crease, was was a beautiful thing to just kind of shut it down. But I will tell you, those two teams played really, really hard. Like I said, Wingate's defense was swarming, and ball moved by Wingate, whether it was man or zone on the offensive side. On the defense side, they were just swarming. It was a great game to watch.

SPEAKER_02

They played great defensively. You know what? Kind of made, like you said, a couple of mistakes in the fourth quarter, and they're young on defense still, Wingate. But Kevin, I never felt that Wingate wasn't gonna lose that game. I just felt that they controlled the whole game. And they they they were they weren't gonna lose. That's the way I felt during that game. They put on a clinic, like you said. Yeah, and Limestone's a good team. You know, they're a top 10 team.

SPEAKER_05

And then what did you think? So so both teams, uh just to finish it off, totally different subject on their play. Both teams brought out new units for this game with Crown Classic. They had the Limestone had the the retro throwback um yellow jersey, 1980s with the big, big holes in them, the old, the old mesh jerseys, and uh and wingate big rolls out big piping and the big letters. Yeah, and then wingate rolls out uh navy blue with gold numbers, which I had never seen before, so it's pretty cool. Yeah, okay, yeah, enough about that game. We could probably Talk about that for another half hour, but let's let's move on.

SPEAKER_02

You know, it's top 10 teams getting after it, you know. That's what people want to hear about.

SPEAKER_05

Here's another one. No, they're not top 10, but it's close. Mercy number five against Seton Hill number 12. Mercy pulls it off 1815. Did you get to watch that game, Danny? I did. I did. That was a that was a good game. Talk about body blows. Mercy gave body blow after body blow, and you kept on thinking is Seaton Hill going to be able to come back, and they did a pretty good job. But Mercy got up, um, it was four three after one, and then you know, Mercy really got up. They had four in a row, and it was eight, four, going, you know, with with a little time left in the with 527 left. And I wrote right then speed kills. I think on defense and offense, they were just a little bit faster than Seaton Hill.

SPEAKER_02

Kevin, Justin Gerdville is a man amongst boys out there. I'm telling you, yeah. He he he's on a different level. He made so many big, big, big plays for them all game long. He he he he was the he's the reason why they won that game. Six caused turnovers by him. Him him alone. He won that game for them. Yeah, you know what? Mercy's stacked. You know that. Gibbons, Calibri's, Kearning. TJ Heider had himself a game, huh? Six goals.

SPEAKER_05

You know what's funny? I did not know he had that. Every every time TJ has a game like that, I don't know he has that many goals until I see the the the stats later. I know he he scored several, but I didn't know it was six. That's amazing. He had a good game. He's a finisher, man.

SPEAKER_02

He's always around the cage, man. And you know what? If he gets dished, he doesn't miss. He's very he doesn't miss. Yeah. You know, he he he gets those dishes from those guys and he puts it in the cage. And that's the bottom line. He's a finisher and he does his job and he does his job well. But if you ask me, like Brady Kiernan had four goals, man. That kid's a good player. He I felt like sometimes he tries to do so much too much. Yeah, well, that's what's funny, too. You got other guys get rid of the rock sometimes and you know, work it around again.

SPEAKER_05

But I think what's also interesting, I think, Danny, in the first half, it seemed like Seton Hill was really trying to shut him down, too. They were doubling him with two poles. I mean, they're so there there are other people that are open. I think they were able to get that going after that. But I what I saw is wow, they're really trying to make sure Kiernan, and then Kiernan still had a day, four goals and two assists. But I I think you're right. I think there's there's a time and place that there's other players. They got plenty of players that can shoot the rock.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I just felt, you know, there was a few times I felt they rushed the possession, maybe rushed, you know, took an inopportune shot early in the in the clock, you know, and that type of thing, instead of working the ball a little bit. You know, when you're a good offense, work the ball. Work the ball. Work it, man. Because you're gonna just get defenders to move and you're gonna get yourself easy layup goals all game. And you know what? When you do that, good things happen. When you try to rush, sometimes you do things and you make bad decisions and and bad things can happen. I felt that Brady, as good as he is, and he's a beast, man. He's a big hit. He reminds me of a couple of players that I'm let me tell you something. He can play. Oh, yeah. He can back he can back guys in like Shaquille O'Neal, or he can beat them off the step like you know, like Michael Jordan. I mean, just he does a lot of things well. He doesn't have to do it all though, because they have six other guys that scored in that game as well. Yeah, so besides TJ and Brady and Jack Gibbons, there's six other guys to put the rock in the biscuit in the basket that game.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I agree. I totally agree with that, Danny. They they have a lot of other players. Their defense played really well. I thought for a second, right at the end of the game, it was really interesting. Mercy, it's 15-11 after three. Mercy scores two quick ones. Heider had a steal because they were trying to outlet it, and and uh he picked it off and then scored, and then they scored another one right after that with a face-off win. So before you knew, it was 17-11 with with 14 minutes left to play. But but like I said, Seton Hill taking body blows, they try to fight back, they score three in a row, make it 18-14 with 253 left. And I wrote down in a note is there enough time? Now it wasn't wasn't enough time, not the way that the way Mercy's defense was playing. No, Cardville, man.

SPEAKER_02

Cardville and Kipano, he had 16 saves. Well, Tommy Amano's Tommy Amano, he's gonna make saves, but Kip Kipness, Kipness is good too, man. He he played really well on defense, yeah. So, but you know what? Sforzoka had four goals, and Baton Gansler had three for Seaton Hill, Connor Zostan had two, and five other guys scored too. So they they dished the rock pretty good. You know what? Seaton Hill's a good team. Coach Navotany's a great coach, he's got those boys playing really well. They just ran into a team that was just a little bit better than them today. But you know what? Josh Miller in goal for Seton Hill stood on his head. He did 18 saves.

SPEAKER_05

I I I wrote down that note too. He the goalie play was really good. Miller was awesome. And it really, I mean, this is like a top 10 matchup. This time Mercy won. Mercy was the better team.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but if you look at the team stats, kind of crazy. Seton Hill outshot him 59 to 39. Yeah. Like, whoa. And then you know what? Turnovers, Mercy had 21 turnovers to Seton Hill's 19. Mercy was 14 for 19 on the clears. They struggled a little bit clearing the ball yesterday, uh Saturday. Um, Mercy had 37 ground balls to Seton Hill's 31. Mercy. PJ Aguilaros had a great game. The Kellenberg high school kid. He won 23 face-offs. So he kept them really getting getting possession after possession. So PJ's pretty good face-off kid. And uh Seton Hill put a big goose egg up, zero for five on the extra man while Mercy was one for four on the extra man. So, but Justin Gardville is a man amongst boys. Good luck to teams playing Mercy. Yeah, you're gonna have a tough day. They are going to score, they are going to play defense, and you're gonna have to try to get it past the mono. So good luck if you want to play Mercy. You better bring your A game because those guys can play. Without a doubt.

SPEAKER_05

Okay, I have another game. This was a Friday game, actually. It was Emmy Riddle and Lander. Emmy Riddle pulls it off 16-14. I was so looking forward to watching this game, but they weren't streaming it live because it was played in a neutral site in Savannah, Georgia. So I basically was watching it. I was watching the live stats trying to keep up. It was hilarious. Um, I'll tell you what, Emmy Riddle was very consistent. They scored four goals in each quarter and they outshot Lander 50 to 40. And I think that may have been the difference, Danny, because the team stats really favored Lander. They had Lander had 19 saves to Emmy Riddle's 14. Lander only had 10 turnovers to Emmy Riddle's 20. However, Emmy Riddle did have more ground balls, 54 to 46. But it was a pretty close game. It was just one of those games, once again, Emmy Riddle got up by enough goals. Uh, you know, it was close until the fourth, and then they basically put three in the net, and they they extended the lead 15 to 10, and it was just enough where you where Lander could not come back. Coleman Jacobs for Emmy Riddle had six goals, and Pete Abbas had five goals and one assist. Both of those are career highs for them. And then on Lander's side, Carter Wilcox and Adam Mayor both had three goals and one assist. So this was a really good game. I really wish it was it was broadcast and streamed because all I could do was keep on watching the the live stream and see who was coming close. But it looked like a really good game.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so Emory Riddle is definitely a much improved team, but I think they played Tampa this week, don't they? I I think so. Yeah, good luck. You're gonna play Tampa after they just lost to the number 20 team in the country. I would not want to be the I don't care what team you are, I wouldn't want to be the next team. Because I don't think practices are gonna be that easy for for the Spartans this week. I think they're gonna be no. Yep, yep.

SPEAKER_05

I don't know if you saw a coach Clark at the end of that game. He was standing there right on the the sideline where the team was, no one was around him, everyone was gone by then. Puts his ball cap in the back of his back of his pants, and you know he's just thinking. He's just thinking. So I agree with you. Emmy Riddle, you've had a good run, you're playing really well. Tampa's gonna be coming out. They don't want to lose another one.

SPEAKER_02

Coming into a pissed-off diesel train, is what you're coming into. So, you know, they're down in Florida, so they're used to seeing a lot of storms. They're gonna be running into a big hurricane this weekend, I guarantee. Okay, well, what game I'd like I'd like to talk about, the Lemo, the Le Moyne Undie game. Go for it, go for it. Did you watch that game? I didn't, I did not get to watch it. Let me tell you something. That was some game. UIndy made it exciting at the end. You know what? Le Moine had to hang on a little bit at the end to win that game. But Lemoyne pulled it out 15-13. So number two, Le Moyne beat number seven UI. Undy's a good team, Kevin. Oh, yeah. They're deep, they're fast, they're athletic, they do a lot of things well, man. Ben Foster, he he he can do a lot of things out there. He had five goals, Drew Billig, another, you know, just these kids can play three and one, but they had six other scorers score the rock against Lemoyne. But you know what? Lemoyne put up seven goals in that first quarter. Wow. I remember seven seven, one after one. And I'm not used to seeing that from a Le Moine team. They used to like their methodical, like the grind, use the clock, get high shots. Let me tell you something. They were getting after it offensively. So this new look offense for Lemoyne is showing their athleticism and showing their depth. Joey Pasimente had six goals, Kevin. Kevin Sheehan had two, Ethan Lowne had two. All these new guys, Sam Lambert had two, Isaiah Faschetti, Isaac Foschetti had two. Casey uh what Matt Valvanese had 13 saves for Lemoyne, you know, and Casey Carlson had six saves for UND. Undy. This game went back and forth. Lemoy went, jumped out to that run, and then Undy outscored him in the second quarter. I was like, okay, here we go. Then Lemoyne's defense showed up in that third quarter and held those guys to one goal. Wow. I know. But then what happened? UIndy's defense showed up in the fourth quarter, held Lemoyne to one goal, and scored six goals. Okay? It was 14-8 going into the fourth quarter, Lemoyne. When Ben Foster had two goals within a minute, within a minute to bring 14-10. Pesamente scored on the very next possession for Lemoyne, and Lemoyne was back up five. So I was like, hmm, there's that five-goal, four-goal cushion from that first quarter. Yep. That, you know, they've just, I said, well, we've seen that several times this year in this past. I'm saying to myself, I'm saying to myself, there's three minutes left in this game. I've seen a lot of things happen in three minutes. Does Undie have what it takes? Well, I know they got the athletes. I know that they got the skilled players. I know that they have the defense. Can they get the breaks? That's what it's going to come down to now, right? So Pesamenti scores and puts him back up five. And then Billig scores and bring and brings UIndy back within four to fifteen-leven. Lemoyne wins the face-off and calls a timeout. Okay? There's like a minute and fifty-two seconds left. Out of the timeout, Pesamenti turns the ball over for Lemoyne. And UIndy gets the ball and calls timeout. I was like, oh boy. We got like a minute and change left. They're down three. Can they can they do this? Billick shoots wide right and lost the possession, and Lemoyne couldn't clear the ball. I was like, oh Tristan Schaefer scores for Undy to bring it to 15-13. And that was the end of the game, Kev. So the last like three or four minutes was super duper exciting. But you know what? Lemoy surprised me offensively. I'm so used to them being such a defensively stout team and so methodical on offense. But man, they they just they were pouring it on early.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and like we said last week, they just seem to be able to reload, and and then these guys just continue on what they what they've done before.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I've got you indie you indie had 48 shots to Lemoyne's 29. Wow. Wow. I know, but only 26 were on goal, and Valvanie saved 18 of them. So, you know, Undy's got a squad. They just, you know what? Lemoyne, Lemoyne's good, Kevin. Yeah, they're good, man. They're gonna be in the mix, I think, at the end.

SPEAKER_05

Well, they're they're number one right now, so uh okay. So I've got one other game. One more, and that is Coach Joe Tooner hosting my man Alabama Huntsville, up at Mars Hill. It was an overtime game, Danny, and Alabama Huntsville pulls it out 14-13. This was a very evenly matched game, but it was a game of runs, tied 2-2 after one, and then Alabama Alabama Huntsville scores to go up 3-2, but Mars Hill then goes on a five-goal tear to go up 7-3. And then it kind of went back and forth. The Chargers were actually to get a few more goals. It was 9-7 at half, Mars Hill. Alabama scores two to open up the second half, and then Mars Hill scores two. But it always seemed like from the first half when when they did that, Mars Hill did those five goals that they were in charge of the game. They were up 13-10 with eight minutes left, and the last eight minutes were all chargers. They dominated possession for the last eight minutes. They reel off three straight goals to tie it and go into overtime. Then they score the game winner with less than a minute into overtime. And and it was on a rebound goal on the crease. That was the bummer. That Mars Hill players were so bummed. The goalie makes a great save, and the guy's just right there on the crease and gets it. And just like and it wasn't just a quick stick, but it was like there's no stopping that second goalie got it. He just was lucky to get it. But I'll tell you, it was a game not of halves, it was a game of 42 minutes. What am I saying? Yeah, 52 minutes and eight minutes. Right. It was crazy. And Alabama Huntsville outshot Mars Hill 51 to 29. Oof. Yeah. And that's a long day.

SPEAKER_02

That's it.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, they're goal, their goalie. That's that's what was it? I don't know if I I can't tell if it was that they just wore him down because Marshall was still playing. It didn't look like they were tired, but they seemed like, you know, when you've got that much going on, their goalie, Steve Smith. Uh, we've talked about him before. He had 21 saves for Mars Hill. He is a good goalie, Danny. We gotta be watched. We gotta people gotta watch him. He is really good. So it was a good game. I don't know. I don't know if Alabama Huntsville just finally wore him down, but it was so wild to watch that last eight minutes was so different than the rest of the game.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, coach Turner's in his second year now at Mars Hill, and you know, he's gonna he'll he's a good coach. He knows how to win, he knows what it takes. It's just he just needs the ingredients, and he's gotta he's got one in that in that goalie there. Exactly.

Coach's Spotlight

SPEAKER_05

Okay, Danny, let's move on to our coach's spotlight. So I have to start off by eating some humble pie. What's that? Well, well, we're bringing on Newberry's head coach, right? And as you remember, when we did the top 20, you had Newberry in. That's right. I had him out. That's right. And and the head coach, he called me out as he should. He called me out. USILA now has them at 17. So I am very happy to see that he proved me wrong. And I'm very willing to eat the humble pie, eat crow, whatever he wants me to eat. So let's just welcome him in, Coach Nick Connor, head coach of Newberry Wolves. Hey guys, thanks for having me.

SPEAKER_02

Hey Coach Connor, good to see you again. How's everything?

SPEAKER_00

Everything's going uh whirlwind up and down, roller coaster of uh of a ride right now. Just I got a lot of things going on.

SPEAKER_02

Um need a nap. Need a nap.

SPEAKER_00

Just bought a house with uh my soon-to-be fiance. So we're kind of in the middle of uh we're kind of in the middle of rebuilding or uh you know, just got done doing the bathroom demo and taking some walls and um been there, been there a couple times. On top, on top of everything else.

SPEAKER_05

So um I I've been there, but I've never had to do that while coaching uh a college lacrosse team. So I you've got more on us than than than anyone coach. So let's start off. You you talked about a little bit. You have a great start to your season. You have quality wins against Belmont Abbey, Lynn, Mount Olivan, Lincoln Memorial, with only one loss to a really good Rollins team. Is this what you were envisioning at the beginning of this season?

SPEAKER_00

Um, you always want to say yes to that. Um, but uh, I mean, we wanted to make sure that we had good competitive games leading up to our sack games. Uh, I mean, we're getting ready here for Wingate. Uh, and realistically, I consider it the gauntlet. We got Wingate, LR, Limestone, Anderson. I think in a matter of I think in a matter of like 10 days, something like that. Oof, oof. Um, yeah. So it's it I I my hope was to get us into a better position for you know, knowing that these are gonna be nationally ranked programs. So you want to make sure that you're also playing great programs at a conference. And I I felt like we kind of were were able to do that. And you know, we we had a tough loss there to Rollins, where I mean, we just didn't show up. Our offense, our defense, faceoffs, goalie play, everything. We, you know, and against those teams, when you start touching the top 10, you got to be spot on. You're allowed to have, you know, a couple mistakes here and there. Um, but if you make mistakes all over the field, that's what's gonna happen to you.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, that's so true, coach. And and we were just talking about this. You, like you said, you are entering the gauntlet. I cannot believe your conference schedule the way it starts off. Every team is ranked. Those first four games, they're all ranked. So what are you doing? Um I know you're preparing. Is was it just the what the non-conference play to get you ready for that? I mean, this is just gonna be brutal the next four weeks or 10 days, if it really isn't 10 days.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, someone in the South Atlantic conference must hate me. Maybe it maybe, or maybe this is Timmy Boyle doing this to me. I don't know. He wouldn't do that.

SPEAKER_05

No, no, no. If he if he was coach, if he was doing it, he would have put him as the fourth game because you would have been tired out by then. I don't know about that. I don't know about that.

SPEAKER_00

He's he's he's a tricky one over there.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, but you know what? You gotta be happy with that four and one start, man. You know what? That Rollins game, Rollins looks good on defense, man. They just they come after it on defense, they cause a lot of turnovers. You know, I could see what you were saying because I watched that game. I watched you guys play that game, but I'm impressed with some of your guys. I really like your freshman, the kid Asario. Asario, is that how you pronounce his last name?

SPEAKER_00

Yep, yeah. So he he's actually a transfer from Monmouth. So he's a he's a junior.

SPEAKER_02

Um you know, I know that name from somewhere I couldn't figure out, and then I was. Like he's a St. Anthony's kid, isn't he? Yep. Yeah, so that's where I knew him from. So yeah, he's balling out this year. You got some boys balling out. Scott Reed, Baker Westmoreland, my man Curtis Buck. I love that kid. That kid's good, man. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And then on the D side, I mean, we got, I mean, obviously it doesn't look that way, but individual effort, you know, Jack Travassos, he's doing uh doing a hell of a job back there. And then we also brought in David Squires, who was a second team All-American from Nassau. Um, and then Caleb, we got Caleb Malon, and then we have some other guys that we're also developing and trying to find roles for.

SPEAKER_05

Is there anyone, Coach, that kind of has surprised you? I mean, you had a lot of guys, you had a few guys that were preseason All-Americans, and they've kind of balled out like we expected. But is there anyone that's kind of surprised you can kind of came out of the woodwork?

SPEAKER_00

Uh, I would say I would say our newcomer, uh, David Squires. I mean, he's he's an uh he's a Long Island, um Long Island kid. So I mean he comes in with knowledge and I mean he's aggressive. He's like the nicest guy off the field, but like when you step on the field, he's aggressive.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he becomes a tiger when you step between the lines, right? I love those guys.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, yep. And then uh, I mean, we also have Brian Lake, but we got into some eligibility issues. Uh, he was a first team All-American, so we'll uh we'll we'll certainly have him for next year. So we'll be better on defense next year. And you know, with the guys that we have currently developing them and finding our roles. I mean, some of our long poles we had to convert to a uh short stick D Midi. Um, and some of them are uh are stepping up and taking on that role.

SPEAKER_02

That's good, and you know, sometimes you gotta do that though, you know. You just you need that one guy to do that, you know, and you and it's good that you have guys that can do play different positions, you know. That just shows athleticism and a willing to do whatever is great or best for the team, which I love that type of kid too.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and that's the thing that I tell them. I I tell them, hey, I mean, do you want to be the fifth or sixth guy to go in? Or you know, do you want to fill and try out where we have a weakness or where we need to be better? Um, you know, this is an opportunity to for you to show us what you got and possibly get more playing time. So if that's what you want to do, you can do that, or you can continue to wait it out.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and and we've seen that. I mean, in fact, when we talked to the two wing gate uh D MIDIs last year that have now graduated, both of them were, I think, converted long poles. And and it makes it can make a difference. I mean, and and the key is like you said, you get a chance to play now instead of later, which is is so important. I mean, even you can can contribute, you can contribute, you know, in practice in scout or whatever, but when you can contribute on the field in games, that's what everyone, every kid wants.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. I agree. I I I like games where I can go through, you know, majority of my bench. You know, the the ones you're just playing the ones and ones, twos, back to the ones. You know, I like getting everyone out there.

SPEAKER_02

I think it's important to get out there and get, you know, sometimes kids need something, you know. They they just, you know, they have one really good game, bang, confidence goes way up. And now they got that confidence a little bit, and now they're a different, a little bit different of a player because they have that confidence going, and then boom, they have another decent game, and the confidence goes up a little higher. And what you're gaining is a kid getting on the field, gaining that NCAA speed and that knowledge and getting confidence. And when you get you get a player with confidence, coach, you know anything can happen.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. And I'm a firm believer in you know, practice players and gamers. And you know, sometimes kids don't get an opportunity to showcase what they got, and uh, you know, I I I like to give them that opportunity sometimes, uh, you know, when when when when we can. So um, you know, we we got back on track there against LMU, and like I said, we're we're getting ready to go into the gauntlet.

SPEAKER_02

You know, even LMU is an improved team, like all the sack teams are getting just better and better and better each year, man. Like all of them. What do you think? You you would you agree with that?

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. Uh LMU and and Coach Booker, my assistant here at Newberry. I mean, realistically, this is kind of his still first first full recruiting class that's in there as a freshman. So he has a lot of freshman sophomores. So when those guys get to a junior, uh senior, and then you get some more freshmen pushing those guys, they're gonna be there. They've been in game.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, well, and coach, we you just mentioned it when you're playing most of your bench that creates depth. And coach Wilson, when he first got there, he didn't have depth, he was down to like 20 players. And when we talked to him in the in the conference preview, that's exactly what he said. He's up to the strength of players as far as you know, number of players he has where he wants to be, and now it's just cultivating them, just like you've done. So let me ask you this, though, coach. You know, we Danny and I talk about this. Lemoyne is known for their stout defense, Tampa is really good at off-ball movement, up-tempo play. How would you describe your team's style of play? And and what would you want to be known for?

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I think our offense is pretty dangerous.

SPEAKER_02

They definitely are dangerous. Yeah, that's why I put you in the beginning of the season. I was like, you know what, guys? You gotta watch this Newberry team. They got players, they got kids coming back, they got ballers on both sides of the ball. And look, I was right, four and one. I was five and one. I knew it. Yeah, that's right. Five and one now. I I knew it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I mean, I just think that you know, we're we're trying to be better between the lines. Um, we're trying to be better on defense. So we know we have some work to be done, but uh this group is committed to putting the work in. And you know, we got guys out there half-hour uh early getting the the extra defensive reps in, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Those guys got those are the guys, you know, them blue-collar guys that go for the extra reps, man. I love them. Yeah, that makes the biggest difference in the world.

SPEAKER_00

It's good to see that they want it. Um, you know, the the as a coach, that's what you want to see. Sure. So uh I mean, I think for our man up unit, I'm I believe we're first in in in the nation right now. I think we're almost batting at 70 percent. Wow, wow. Um man up. Uh I mean we started off 11 for 11 versus we went six for six young Harrison, five for five against Belmont. And then we phenomenal pretty spot on the one we had uh a drop off there on Rollins, but um I think we're still up there.

SPEAKER_05

Would would you say though, Rollins, like Danny talked about, would you say Rollins was the toughest defense you've faced so far?

SPEAKER_00

Um I mean they were they're good, don't get me wrong. Uh we just never had the ball. I mean, we had we had we had seven seven goals on nine shots when we when we got the ball, you know. So it's it's just I mean, you if you look at if you look at the the stat sheet across the board, I mean they beat us in pretty much every stat. When you when you when you have something like that happens, and you know, you have the early violation, two early violations of the first 10 minutes. You you're kind of playing behind the eight ball. Yeah, uh you know, we weren't getting we were we weren't seeing the ball in net as much as we wanted to. Um, you know, but it's also not placing blame on everyone. It's you know, it's a team effort, and you know, you win and lose as a team. It's kind of, you know, defense had a had a had a rough day, and you know, the offense didn't do enough.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so you know what, close the page on to the next chapter, you know. You know, just that's that's all you can do in the NCAA. Just got to close that book and open up that next chapter, and let's get off to the next one. And you did against LMU. And but like you said, you got the gauntlet coming up, coach. And I wish you all the best of luck. This is what's gonna test the Newberry Wolves, and we'll see where you are when you come out of this one in a couple of weeks, you know. And I I I think you got a chance to to win two of them. I hope that's uh and honestly, you really have a legit chance to win all four of them. You really do.

SPEAKER_00

That's certainly not uh an easy task, but we are going to come out ready. We are gonna be fully prepared, and you know, we're gonna hope that we're firing on all cylinders. These are the games where you need saves, you need to go at least 50% at the face-off X.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You capitalize on your offensive opportunities, you gotta limit your turnovers, and you gotta be on um, you know, your rotations and slides. If you're doing that, you need to make sure that you're on point, otherwise, they will capitalize on those mistakes.

SPEAKER_02

It's the sack. It's the sack. I think I don't know. People say the NE 10 is the best. I I think SAC is the best. That's just my opinion. I just think from top to bottom, the level of play in the sack is unbelievable. If the size, you know, you guys have to play nine games, ten games in in in conference a year, it's a lot, you know, and each one of them's you know, got a bag of tricks. Every single one of them can play.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, I agree. I mean at any given day, anyone can show up and win. I know, I know we always say that, but the truth, though. Usually when you get into conference, it's you you're bringing a different mindset. You're you're you're bringing a different game, right? Right. You know, I guess that's why you play your out of conference games, is to get ready for in-conference, right? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And I think, coach, your out-of-conference schedule really set you up well for the sack. But I have this one question I have to ask. Totally off topic. Did you ever get your money back from Coach Tapp?

SPEAKER_00

He still owes me. The interest has been going up on that. It's almost double. Oh, of course it has, Coach. I might be able to retire a year early. Coach, well, they can pay you, he can pay off your mortgage for you. Well, it's good to get there close enough. Reminders, too.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's great. That's fantastic. Well, coach, really appreciate you coming on tonight. You're you're you're a great guest, you got a great squad. I love the Newberry Wolves, I love the way they play. You know, high energy, aggressive play. You're in that sack. It's not an easy, not an easy conference to play in. And you guys have been balling out, you know, five and one right now. And uh really appreciate you coming on, taking the time tonight. I know you've got a lot going on with the new house and a lot of plans going on, and then you got the teams, and then you got the gauntlet for the next 10 days. So you you need to get some sleep, my man.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and I just say this, coach, you know, when when Danny and I do the games to watch this week, every time I'm looking at the schedule, I almost want to pick Newberry because of who you're playing. It's not just your team, it is your team, but it's the quality schedule you've built. But I'm we're trying to spread the love a little bit. So if you don't hear us every year every week saying Newberry, it's still there. You know, I'm watching in the background on my command center. I don't know about that one.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know about that one.

SPEAKER_02

I know that sounded that sounded kind of like Shady, didn't it, Coach? It did, right?

SPEAKER_00

You're giving all the love to Wingate. Come on now. Oh, no, no.

SPEAKER_03

No, no, no.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, but one one good thing to know is I mean, we're only losing three players, everyone else is coming back.

SPEAKER_02

Wow. There you go.

SPEAKER_00

We're we're you know, we're we kind of knew that hopefully these next two years we're somewhere we should be making some bigger strides. And like you said, we're going into the gauntlet, and that's certainly no easy task.

SPEAKER_02

So you know, you've improved every year since you've been there. I mean, every year the team just gets better and better, you're getting larger in numbers, you got the depth. You know what? Like you said, these the this next two years, and you get that freshman class next year. You get, you know, hopefully you got one or two stud freshmen that can come in and contribute right away, and you're right there. You're right there. Time will tell.

SPEAKER_00

Time will tell, Paul.

SPEAKER_05

All right, coach. It's been awesome having you on again. Thanks so much for your time. Appreciate it. Thank you guys.

Games to Watch

SPEAKER_05

All right, Danny. Let's move on to games to watch this week. Who you got?

SPEAKER_02

Well, I got a couple of games, Kev. I think uh one game that's sticking out to me right now is the uh limestone Anderson game. It's uh SAC game, has a lot of uh implications for sack tournament stuff. Um, Anderson's been making noise in the sack for a couple of years. The limestone off that big loss to Wingate. How are they gonna come back? Anderson has been dealing with a little couple of injuries with uh Cam Weeks in the last week or two. So uh I think that game's got some interesting implications. I think it's gonna be a well-played game by both teams. Both teams are good teams. They play the game well, they play the game fast. If you're out in podcast land, you got nothing to do. You can watch the limestone Anderson game. I think that's gonna be a good one.

SPEAKER_05

I got what we got. I totally agree. Uh, another game I've got on Saturday is Mercyhurst Chestnut Hill. And the reason I've got this game, I think the the Lakers will win, but this is another big matchup for the Griffins. And if they can play Mercyhurst close, I think that's gonna be a telling sign for what they can do in the CACC. So it's more about just seeing how they play and match up against Mercyhurst and how because they kept it pretty close against Seton Hill was 7-4 game.

SPEAKER_02

So it's that's kind of why I think it's Chestnut Hill doesn't they don't suck, you know, but Mercyhurst is really, really good. And then you got Sean Duran at the face-off. First thing. First thing, first part of the game, you got to go up against Sean Duran. Like it's like, all right. So I think it's gonna be a little bit of an uphill bill. Uh I agree battle. I agree. Chestnut Hill. I agree. Uh you know what? As long as they're competitive, you know, make a competitive game. But I like Mercy Hurst in that one.

SPEAKER_05

I like I said, I do too. But I just want to see what what Jestin Hill can bring to that to the table there.

SPEAKER_02

So I got I got the Colorado Mesa and the Rollins Tars. I've got that one too. You just they just played what? Two games in what?

SPEAKER_05

They played two games in 13 hours. They played Rockhurst on Saturday, and they won, I think, something like 16 to 6. And then they turn around Sunday morning. They played at Rockhurst, and then they so they stayed over. Next morning, they get up, and it was like 9 or 10 in the morning they played. They played Quincy, they won both games. And let me tell you, Danny, I watched that game against Rockhurst. The Quincy game wasn't streamed. I watched the game against Rockhurst, and we talked about Wingate putting on a clinic. Colorado Mesa put on a clinic, face-off, ride, goalie play, transition, ball movement. They put on a show, and I'm telling you right now, they're gonna need that against Rollins. Now, Rockhurst had like three of their best players out, too. So that may have been a difference. They're face-off specialists, their top scorer, Alex Weeson, and one of their defenders, Luke Getz, who's really good. But Colorado Mesa was a juggernaut in that game, and I think if they play like that, they could really test Rollins.

SPEAKER_02

Well, they have one of the best face-off guys in the country, Colorado Mesa. Dylan checking. You know, yeah, he's really tough, man. So he he's really good. You know, Colorado Mesa's been putting up big points, and you know, they're in the top 20 again, and they all they they play big teams well. They just they they play well in big games. So they're in the top 20. Rollins is a good team, too, man. They beat you know a couple of really good teams. This they're undefeated, they're in the top 10. So I'm interested to see the Colorado Mesa Rollins game. This might be a true test for both teams, actually. I agree.

SPEAKER_05

I agree. I've got another game to watch, and it's usually good every year, and it's St. A's against Bentley. Yeah, man. Any 10 matchup. Yeah, and I tell you what, Saint A's will want this to keep pace with Lemoyne and Delphi, but so does Bentley. They both handled their first games easily, and they both want to continue that ride.

SPEAKER_02

So where is this game? Where is it? I gotta find out where it is, because that's gonna make a big difference in this game. Because if St. A's can get Bentley at home, it's gonna be a long day for Bentley. But if St. A's has to travel, then Bentley's got a shot. They're they're playing at St. A's. So I gotta give the advantage a little bit to St. Ay's playing at home.

SPEAKER_05

I agree. I agree. But I think this is gonna be a close game.

SPEAKER_02

You know, Bentley's a top 20 team, St. A's a top 10 team. You know, they're this a good matchup. These, you know, when you start talking about the top 20 teams, Kev, you're you're talking about teams that can play, teams that are coached. So it's any given Sunday. As Frostburg State and Tampa, it's any given Sunday once you get into the top 20. So can Bentley give St. A's a game at home? I do. I expect them to be competitive. Kind of like St. A's at home, though. But that's a good one. I think that's gonna be a good one to watch. Who else do you have? Well, I have Belmont, Abbey, and Lewis, Coach Barrett, and Peruzzi. You know, so we got that connection going on, but both teams are playing about the same, Kev. You know, if you look at the stats and look at everything, they're both kind of really looks like they match up evenly. It should be an interesting game. I what do you think?

SPEAKER_05

I agree with you. I think Belmont Abbey has played well. They've played well, how do I want to say this? I think if you look at where they were last year, they and how they started and how how Coach Barrett said that was probably the worst beginning of a season he ever had to go through. I think he's gotta be pleased at where his team is right now. You know, he won every game, but I'll tell you what, I think this I think you're right. Lewis is the same thing. Lewis has lost to really tough competition. And so this these two I think match up really well. And it's gonna be probably it may even closer, it may be a barn burner.

SPEAKER_02

This might be the one of the better games of the week. I just think these two teams match up well. You know, we can talk about a lot of teams in Division II, you know, and matchups and stuff, but when you look at the numbers and you look at everything in the coaching and everything involved, these two teams match up well. And when you see that on paper, I mean you're like, usually those are pretty good games.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and Peruzzi's off that Bartlett tree, Bart Barrett tree.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. So, you know, he's the this former student, and you know, just got the those matchups. I love those things. And you know what? If you really wanted to talk about another coach type thing matchup, uh the Wingate Newberry game, because Coach Cotta actually played for Coach Boyle at Dallas. Dowling. So not only was he a former player, but now he's a mentor, now he's a coach, and the five-in-one Newberry Wolves are pretty good squad, Kev. And uh they're gonna have to play Wingate. That might be an interesting game to watch, too, the Bulldogs, but kind of like the Bulldogs in that one. I kind of like Belmont Abbey in the Belmont Abbey Lewis game. Um I'm gonna go Lewis.

SPEAKER_05

I think it's gonna be Lewis over Belmont Abbey.

SPEAKER_02

Oh wow, interesting. You know what? It wouldn't surprise me. Wouldn't surprise me.

SPEAKER_05

Could be a what I don't want to say this. Remember, I did this once and I got it right, but I it could be a one-goal game.

SPEAKER_02

It could be. Oh oh soothsayer one who was so d right on point last time you made a prediction. All right, so hey, I'm gonna put you out there. What do you like in that limestone Anderson game?

SPEAKER_05

I'm gonna take limestone.

SPEAKER_02

I like limestone in this game. Because I liked what I saw out of limestone. They've been struggling. They're not the team that maybe we thought they'd be, but they're good. And maybe that wingate game was the one game to light that spark under them.

SPEAKER_05

Anderson is a great team. I'll tell you they struggled against Coker. They pulled it out, but they struggled until the second half. They were not leading that game. And I think Limestone coming off Limestone coming off the loss is going to come out with fire. Whereas I think I worry a little bit about Wingate, because that was such an emotional win. Such a big win. I mean, unlike last year where they win an o won an overtime against against Limestone. That was almost like a relief because anyone could have won that game. Wingate had that game. And so could this be a trap game for the Bulldogs? It could be. I don't know. I think Wingate, I think Wingate's gonna win, and I think Limestone's gonna win. I think uh Anderson's gonna play well. It's gonna be a great, like you said, it's gonna be a great game, but I I I pick Limestone. All right, all right.

SPEAKER_02

So you got any more games on your docket to watch this week?

SPEAKER_05

I I just have a couple others of note just because of where they sit today so far. So one is uh actually UDC Dominican. UDC has a new coach, Joe Stanelas. And Dominican, you know, I think it's a good matchup. I think they're gonna be close. It's not one of those games where, you know, it's not a top 20 matchup, but two teams that could be evenly matched could be a really good game uh uh to watch. I think it'll be a good matchup. The other one I had, another one just to note, is Lake Erie St. Michael's. The Storm played really well against Fried. Now they've got Davenport this coming Wednesday, but St. Mike's, who played well in the first game and won, they've only had one game. Their Bentley game was postponed until April 19th, and the Felician game that was supposed to be this past weekend was canceled. So they've been off for a while. So it'll be just interesting to see how they play, if they've got any rust on them and what they do, because Lake Erie is not gonna Lake Erie is a little fresher. They're coming, they're gonna have a game on Wednesday and be ready to go for them on Saturday. On Sunday, rather, they're playing on Sunday. So those are the games I had.

SPEAKER_02

I like Lake Erie. I agree with that. I like Lake Erie in that game. I like Lake Erie. They've had a pretty kind of tough schedule and they've been playing pretty well. So I like Lake Erie in that game. Yep. Do you have any others? No, that's it, Kev. That's it. It's was hey, this was one hell of a week for uh Division II lacrosse. It was just uh quality lacrosse all weekend long. It really, really was. It's this has been a really good Division II season so far.

SPEAKER_05

It has, Danny. I will tell you what's really funny is I'm watching a game and I'm like, okay, uh, it looks like this team has got it handled. I'm not gonna watch it, but I can't I can't pull myself away because I don't know what's gonna happen sometimes. Some games you can. I mean, some games you can, but you know, when when all of a sudden the team comes back and they've been on these runs where it's two, three, four, five goals to come back. You look at the games that you just talked about, Lemoyne Undy, Mars Hill, Alabama, Huntsville. Some of these roles, you're just like, oh my gosh, I just it it it it's just it keeps me mesmerized. I I'm like transfixed watching these games.

SPEAKER_02

You know, sometimes, like you said, we get we get sometimes we get caught up with the you know the big dogs playing all the time. But you gotta understand, like the UDCs and the and the De U Bills and the Malones for winning games, and they're playing, you know, the competitive lacrosse, and there's good games across the board in Division II. It's not just the big dogs every week, you know.

SPEAKER_05

A hundred percent.

Player's Spotlight

SPEAKER_05

Okay, now on to the player spotlight. My favorite part, Kev. My favorite part. Can't get going until you say that, Danny. This is a player who is one of the top point getters on his team and racked up some pretty impressive accolades last season. Third team All-American, USILA all-region team, NE10 all-conference team. And this year, he has started right where he left off. So why don't we just welcome him in? MIDI for the Pace Setters, Anthony Caputo. Hey Anthony.

SPEAKER_01

Hey guys, hey, it's a pleasure to be here.

SPEAKER_02

Anthony Caputo, pace setters, midfielder. I love the MIDI's. I always my hashtags are middies roll everywhere. Everywhere I hashtag I'm MIDI's roll. How are you doing tonight, man?

SPEAKER_01

Great, great. I mean, playing the cross, having a good time. Nothing better.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you've got a nice big smile on your face for those viewers. There's no viewers, but for those listening, Anthony's a handsome kid. He looks good in his Yankee, in his Yankee sweatshirt. Oh, please, oh, please.

SPEAKER_05

We we could show your face on on a YouTube channel, but not ours. That's why we don't do that, Anthony. We have faces for podcasts.

SPEAKER_02

Anthony's a real he's a really great player, and I'm so glad he took the time tonight out of study hall to come and uh talk to the boys at In the Creese.

SPEAKER_05

Always. Yeah, so let's just start off. You've already racked up six goals and three assists in two games. So, how does it feel to start off like that?

SPEAKER_01

Uh, it feels great. You know, I can't thank my teammates enough. We're going out there, having a great time. Um, just always playing, having a smile on our face. I think that's the most important thing. And, you know, we're just gonna try to keep it up. We got a couple tough opponents coming up, too. So I'm really excited about that. Um, and we just gotta keep it rolling.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, so let's talk about that for a second. You guys have come out of the gates really fast. Beat Malloy 13-6 and Wilmington 18-8. And that score doesn't really tell what you guys did because it was 11-0 at half. So, do you feel is it is it really just the chemistry on the team, or do you feel you have something to prove from last year?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, I think it's both. The chemistry we have is really strong. You know, we got a bunch of young guys that are pretty much have to bring their best, you know. We lost a couple of guys last year that were key components to our offense, to our defense as well. Um, so the young guys are gonna step up. And yeah, definitely last year, um, we didn't really like how our season ended. So um I think we definitely have something to prove for sure.

SPEAKER_02

You know what? I'm sorry, go ahead, Kev.

SPEAKER_01

Go ahead.

SPEAKER_05

I was just gonna follow up with that is that you have two out of conference games left with Lynn and George and Court. So, how are you guys feeling about that? And are you using those games to really prep you for the conference play?

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, um, I think we're really confident. You know, coming off those two games, um, I think we played very well. Uh, some things to work on, but um, you know, we were we played well. I mean, there's really not much else we could do is that except go out there and play hard. Yeah, I think we're really confident. We're excited to play, and we're getting ready for those conference games.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you guys did play well against Wilmington. I watched the game, and uh you know what's cool about Lin. What's you know what's cool about this game? You're playing at homewood, man.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's I'm excited. That's gonna be fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. What's it like? What's the team thinking about that?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, we're excited. Um, you know, it's a new experience for all of us, you know, playing at like one of the biggest venues in lacrosse.

SPEAKER_02

And uh storied, storied, it's a storied, you know, field.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. So yeah, the guys are we're pumped and we're ready to go.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's great, man. And Lynn, you know, is a good team to play, but to play at Hopkins, man, it's a truly it's gonna be a something that you'll take away forever. Like, wow, look at this. I'm playing on Hopkins and on the storied homewood field, you know. It's something that uh I think that you'll take that memory with you forever, you know. And something that's that's another thing about Division II lacrosse. Now, let's talk about Division Two. Anthony, you're a player, dude. Like you're six foot, 200 and something pounds. How'd you wind up at pace? Um, how did Coach Mariano cook you up and pull you in? How did he do it?

SPEAKER_01

So in high school, I played for FLG and pretty much like my four years there, and Coach Winkolf actually introduced me to Coach Mariano. Um, and it was great. I mean, I came for the visit, I loved it here. I enjoyed the campus. I I met a bunch of the guys, and I just knew that the coach brought in a bunch of good guys. Um, I think that's the biggest part too. Once I felt so welcome to like when I first came here for my visit, everyone just came in with open arms and stuff like that. So it was great. And coach offered me, and I was like, Yep, this is where I'm going.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Coach Mariano, he's quite the guy, man. He's got that fiery temper, kind of not I'm I wouldn't say temper, but he's definitely got an edge to him. And I and I like coaches like that. I like coaches with an edge. I think the players will play a lot of times like their head coaches, and uh I you get along with Coach Mariano pretty well.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, definitely. Um, he's a passionate guy. Um, he wants to win, and I can't ask for anything else.

SPEAKER_05

So now you get you get here, you get the pace, and now you're a senior. So, what do you like about this team this year?

SPEAKER_01

I like you guys mentioned it before, that um I love our chemistry. I think our chemistry now is really strong, and you know, all of us we all love playing together. Um, and you can even see in practice, like we're always talking to each other, we're always we always have that competitive edge. Um, and that's super important. But yeah, it's definitely the chemistry we have. You know, we always want to go out there and play hard. Like I said before, um, we got some young guys that are ready to step up, and we're really excited to see how this year plays out.

SPEAKER_02

You know what I liked when I saw when I saw you guys play Wilmington the other night? Wilmington's a good team, man. They were knocking on the doors for the NCAAs last year. They they won a conference championship. They did real, oh, they lost in the championship, but they did really, really well last year. A good, well-coached team. But man, you guys kind of handed you guys kind of handled them pretty good, man. What do you think is the difference between a team like this year from last year? I know you're young, it's different, but what is it about the gamma? You just said chemistry, but there's got to be something a little bit different about this team. What do you think? Because you're one of the older guys now, you're one of the go-to guys now. So your leadership and your thoughts mean a lot to this squad. What do you see so far?

SPEAKER_01

I think it's a lot of the guys this year are coming for revenge, kind of like every single time we step out there, it's just a different vibe. Everyone's fired up, pumped to play, and I think guys just bring the energy now and a little bit more, and they just want it more. So I think that's really it. Um, that high energy, wanting to win the competitiveness, that's the real big thing this year, right?

SPEAKER_02

Another uh passion of uh Coach Mariano is is love for the NE10. And um uh Kevin calls it the uh granddaddy of them all, uh, as far as conferences are concerned, because they have such a such a pedigree that goes back from you know a long, long time. What's it like to play in the NE10?

SPEAKER_01

There are a bunch of great teams. It's definitely the toughest conference for sure. It's always a dogfight with everyone. You know, we love playing everybody, everybody enjoys playing us, and I think it's just it's just a really good conference. Great teams, great guys all around, and it's just it's so competitive, too. And I think that's what we love about it. Every single time there's an A10 conference game, it's like, all right, well, this is it, like it's serious now, instead of non non-league games and stuff like that. Once we get into any 10 conference play, then it's like, okay, now we got to buckle down.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, so you got you have you have to go on the road to a Delphi, which kind of stinks, but you got Bentley at home, you got St. A's at home, and you have Lemoyne at home. That's huge, man, to have them boys in your house because it's a little different when they come to your house, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, last time we played them at home was my sophomore year, um, which was a great game. They were a great team, always, so it's always a it's always a pleasure, too. But um, I'm really excited for this year, and I'm really looking forward to all those NET conference games.

SPEAKER_02

Anthony, real quick, you know, I was just uh I I'm I've been a fan of Pace for a while, and I've been watching them and for a long time, and I'm like, this team is always in the eight, 10, 12, 7, 6, 8, 9. They're always there, they're always there, and they play in that that tough, tough conference. But what I like, that look game last year against Bentley in overtime, dude, you were a beast in that game. And that's I remember telling Kevin, did you see Anthony Computer last night? Like he was just you took the game over. You took it, you're clutch, man. And that's why I like watching you play. You know, the attackmen, they get all of love, they get all those, you know, sometimes what I like to say, those easy dumps because midfielders are feeding them beautiful passes. But when midfielders do what you do, and you do like a Swiss Army knife out there, you do a little bit of everything. You're picking up ground balls, you're causing turnovers, you know, you're playing offense, you're dishing the ball, and you're scoring. You just you just do it all. It's a real fun to watch a midfielder like you play. Really like the way you play.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you. Yeah, no, that belly game last year was a lot of fun. Um, it was definitely one of the best games I've ever played in. Um, all around. They were an awesome game.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was an awesome game.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was great. It was definitely special to be a part of. It was yeah, it was just exciting all around.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we we took that. We that was a game that we uh we uh we talked about. Yeah, we talked about that game, and I was just ecstatic at the way you play it. I was just like, you know, took it over. Guys won some big face-offs at the end. You hadn't been winning faceoffs that night. All of a sudden, bang, you won three in a row, and it just got that possession. Boom! Another one, Capito. I was like, oh, this is a game, and I went into overtime, and that was awesome, man. And that's when I was like, We, you know, I'd love to get Anthony on. He seems like good play, you know. Right here, Long Island Kid from Westbury. I'm not too far from you. And uh you've been great guests tonight, man. Uh, I'm so glad you came on. You guys are a great team. Pace is gonna be right there again. You you have all the goods, it's been fun watching Pace, and uh I'm gonna be watching him again for the rest of the rest of the season.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah. But Danny, he's buckling down for any 10, but now he has to buckle down for the firing round.

SPEAKER_02

All right, here we are, folks, out in podcast land. We have Anthony Caputo, midfielder from the Pace Setters. Kid's a baller. I wish I was taller, but here we go. A couple of questions in the firing round. We're gonna just hit you up with some questions, just give us the quickest and best answer. You ready to go, kid?

SPEAKER_01

Yep, definitely.

SPEAKER_02

Uh favorite breakfast food, pancakes, pancakes, mom's best meal, chicken coats. Uh-huh. Favorite dessert. Favorite dessert.

SPEAKER_01

Uh chobby cake. Uh favorite football team. Uh, you guys aren't gonna like this. Well, Kev will uh the New England Patriots.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, my man! Shots fired.

SPEAKER_02

Shot's fired. All right. I guess I don't have to ask this next one. Who's your favorite quarterback? Uh Tom Brady, always. That's my dog's name. My dog is Brady, I swear to God, because my son. Now you played quarterback in high school, and so did my middle son. And my middle son loves the Patriots and award number 12. I got a I got him a Tom Brady signed football. That was, you know, so when we got the dog, when we got the dog that had to name him Brady, so I had to go along with that. So okay. Next question favorite cartoon as a kid? SpongeBob. SpongeBob. Classic Xbox? Classic. The classic Spongebob. Xbox or PlayStation?

SPEAKER_01

Xbox, always. Runs or lifts?

SPEAKER_02

Lifts. Lifts. That's what most people say. They don't like to run. Favorite, favorite kind of music?

SPEAKER_01

Uh, I like country music.

SPEAKER_02

Country. All right. What was the last song you listened to?

SPEAKER_01

Uh Last Night by Morgan Along. All right.

SPEAKER_02

All right.

SPEAKER_01

Favorite TV show. Uh Entourage. That was a good show. I guess I love that show. It was a little different.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was a little different, but I liked it.

SPEAKER_01

Breaking bad as well, actually.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's a good one, too. All right. Best class that you've taken at pace.

SPEAKER_01

Best class. Probably yoga.

SPEAKER_03

That's not what mom and dad want to hear, man. You gotta come up with something different.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, they might hear like non-Euclidean geometry or you know.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just kidding, he said. No, I'm just kidding. Probably financial management. That was a good class.

SPEAKER_02

Financial management. All right, you got yourself out of that well. Um, all right, here we go. Talk about some setters now. Who's the funniest guy on the team?

SPEAKER_01

Funniest guy on the team. Oh, that's that's that's a good one. Um, I'd probably say my cousin Christopher. Okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

All right, Chris Caputo. All right, yeah. Who's the most athletic on the team?

SPEAKER_01

Most athletics.

SPEAKER_02

One of those, yeah, one of those kids that can kind of just do it all, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um there are a lot of guys that could do it all.

SPEAKER_02

Um, you know, some guy that like, you know, the ping pong table comes out and he's just like killing people, and then you go to the bowling alley and he's rolling like a 270. Yeah, you know, one of those guys. I'd probably say Timmy Morrow. Okay. All right, cool, cool. Who's the one guy on the team you would never let date your sister? Oh Marcus. Marcus gets a shout-out. Best best lacrosse memory, favorite, favorite thing that ever happened to you on a lacrosse field.

SPEAKER_01

It's gotta be that Bentley game. Okay, there you go. Well winner, yeah. That was all right. That was special. That was a good game.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, man. Okay, and last but not least, give us your best impression of Coach Mariano. He's laughing, Coach. He's laughing. Uh he's afraid of getting in trouble. He's not getting in trouble. There's no extra runs for this, I promise. I'll call it.

SPEAKER_05

You get special dispensation.

SPEAKER_02

I'll call Mariano myself. I'll go up to Pleasantville. It's not that far.

SPEAKER_01

Uh let me try to think. I think the best is usually when we're at practice or something. Um, I'll probably like he'll yell at me for doing too much, and he'll come to me and just look at me and be like, Anthony, are you serious? And I'm and I'm just uh I'm like, yeah, that was probably not the right play. It's funny because he's looking at me and I'm like, uh, yeah, he's gonna kill me.

SPEAKER_02

Here he comes, right? He's walking to you. I'm like, well, that's pretty cool. You did great in the firing round, Anthony. I really appreciate you coming on tonight. You're a great kid. You're an even better player. And mommy loves your chicken cutlets, and I swear it's not yoga. That's his favorite class. He was only kidding. But you know what, Anthony? You're a good kid. I really enjoyed having you on tonight. I I watch you play a lot. I think you're a really good player. And uh I wish you nothing but success, young man. You're a good kid. And uh continue to ball out like you're doing, and uh maybe we'll get you on again sometime. How's that sound?

SPEAKER_01

Awesome. I really appreciate it, guys. Thank you.

Final Thoughts

SPEAKER_05

Anthony Caputo is not only a good-looking kid, but he was so much fun to have on.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he's a good kid. I like Anthony. I watched him play for a couple of years now, Kevin. He's just a beast at the midfield. I love those middies. You know me, midis rule, man. Yep, they're they're the workhorses for the look, the lacrosse squads. I'm sorry, but the midfielders are. And he's one of one of the best in the country, if you ask me. He's one that you have to, you know, when you're looking at film and you're a defensive coach, you're like, all right, how are we stopping this guy? Because he's a big kid, six foot, he's over 200 pounds. Yeah, he's fast, he's got a great first step. Coach Mariano got himself a good one when he got Anthony. And I'm glad he took the time out of study hall to uh to comment onto the show tonight. He was a great kid. I hoped up. I I'm gonna be watching that kid, you know, for the rest of his career because I like him.

SPEAKER_05

You know, uh Coach Cotter kind of said that I was a little shady, and you backed that up, but I think you're a little shady when you say they're always in study hall. I think that's a good thing, though. It's like it was like every time my my my parents called when I was at Holy Cross and my roommate said I was in church. So there you go. Yeah, you are backing up every student athlete that comes on, and I and I love that, Danny. So with that, Danny, I all I can say is to all our listeners out there, once again, if you enjoy this podcast, please share it with people that would like it as well, whether they have kids in college, whether they're got kids who are playing high school or middle school, um, or athletes doing it right now because we've got plenty of players that are listening now. And I think it's we're just trying to grow this and let, like we always say, D2 is the place to be.

You know what, Kevin? I met a man who um uh over the weekend at the Crown Classic, and he says he's an avid listener to the podcast, loves the podcast, and he runs a youth program in the Raleigh Durham, North Carolina area. And he's been turning on a lot of parents to the podcast up there. And he said that, you know, so there's it's starting to grow in different areas in that high school area where we, you and I really want it to grow because that's the that's the next group of kids coming in and possibly playing in Division II. So if we can get this podcast, like you said, if our listeners can share, share it, subscribe, and get it to those high school coaches and those high school youth coaches and those high school teams and those youth teams, we'd appreciate it so much. Couldn't have said it any better, Danny. And with that, that's a wrap. That's a wrap, Kat. Week five.
