Intro
SPEAKER_01Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's Lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stentram, and with me as always is the chef Gordon Ramsey of Lacrosse Podcast, Danny Moran. Hey, Danny.
SPEAKER_03We're cooking them up. We're cooking them up. You got it. You got it.
SPEAKER_01I use that because we are having our second guest analyst on the show tonight. He might know something about cooking. Well, that's my question. You see, I've known him for around six years, but I only know him by his nickname, Tasty. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And he may need your culinary podcast expertise tonight. So I think we bring him on first. We got to find out where that nickname comes from. I don't know if he's a foodie or he is actually a chef, or he's both. But why don't we just bring him on? Anthony Picano, former goalie and graduate assistant coach for the Wingate Bulldogs. Hey Tacey, how are you?
SPEAKER_00Good. How are you guys? How are we doing? How are you? It's good, man. Good. Happy to be here. It's been a dream, it's been a long time coming. Uh it's been a dream of mine, so uh, I'm excited.
SPEAKER_01My my my son kind of whispered in my ear that it could be a dream of yours. Of course, you know where this started, and I thought you'd be great as a guest analyst. Is I heard you do some color commentary on a few wing gate games back in the day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, when I tore my ACL, um it was during COVID, we live streamed, I think it was like two games. I think we did like an inner squad scrimmage, and then maybe it was like a random game versus somebody close. Um, and Sam Hyman uh actually reached out to me and was like, Do you want to come on and do some color commentary? And uh I kind of liked it. I mean, as a kid, I always kind of enjoyed doing uh you know commentary and looking at it. I always wanted to be, you know, get into the communication side during college, but then kind of saw, you know, how hard it is to get into like the ESBNs, the Fox Sports type of thing. But uh, you know, end up doing, you know, my thing throughout college. But you know, I I love doing this stuff, like podcasts and um doing like my own type of commentary.
SPEAKER_01I love it. So you gotta solve the mystery. Where does the nickname come from? Tasty.
SPEAKER_00Uh so it's a uh nickname from I was a kid. Um in high school, me and a bunch of buddies, I got sick working at camp. Um, I was sick for like two days, a first day back at work. Um it was a like a shopping center with like a Chipotle, uh pizzeria, and a bunch of other places. And I was so hungry. I didn't eat in like three days. And I remember just eating out the entire thing. And my one butter, uh my one buddy kind of don't looks at me at the end and he goes, Are you full? Like you good. I'm like, nah, that was so tasty. And he he looks at me and she goes, All right, that's that's where it's coming from.
SPEAKER_01So that's great. I love it. I love it.
SPEAKER_03So so you know, you know, Kevin, Kevin, real quick, you know, you said you met him six years ago. I met Anthony's parents before I met him. Yeah, crazy.
SPEAKER_00At a lacrosse tournament, yes.
SPEAKER_03That's right. At a lacrosse tournament, true blue. My little guy was playing for true blue. I think you had just committed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, my brother. Yeah, my brother was in a tournament. I remember this story. My brother was in a tournament. Um, he was playing for, I forget what team he was playing for at the time. And I think you had a wingate sweatshirt or t-shirt on, or my dad's one of the two, and you guys came up to each other, we're talking about it, and I remember that story. My mom always mentions that story to me. How yeah, it was your mom you guys met before uh before we met.
SPEAKER_03That's right. Your mom came up to me and she's like, Wingate, who do you know with wingate? And I was like, Well, my son's a junior there, and blah, blah, blah. And we got talking, and she's like, Yeah, my son committed, he's a goalie. I was like, Oh, that's great. And then I got to know actually your mom and dad throughout the years when you were there, and my son was there. So it's a good little uh it's a good little family you got over there, Anthony, man. They're good people, your mom and dad really are. Yeah, they're the best.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. Well, want to tell me a little bit about your college lacrosse experience because you know, we've had other players on. You don't have the accolades, I would say, nationally in D2, but you are known at Wingate, Wingate Bulldogs Lacrosse. So talk to me about your college experience.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean my college experience is I will say, you know, I like you said, I don't have the accolades and I don't have the stats like you know, other guys you have in the podcast, but I do I like to think that my college experience is probably one of the best. Um, I came in as a freshman, you know, not knowing being so far away from home, you know, one one day being like, I want to go home one day I want to stay here. And kind of knowing the family aspect that Coach Boyle has and what the team had was awesome. So as the years went on, I kind of, you know, thought to myself working hard to getting my teammates better and also getting myself better. But I also said to myself throughout the years, is um I'm not trying to be the best player I can be. Um, I'm also trying to be the best teammate I can be, best person. Um, I wanted to make sure that every guy on the team knew that if they had something wrong or anything, uh I'm gonna come, you can come to me and talk to me. And um if you wanted me to make you laugh, I'll make you laugh. Like just trying to be the ultimate team guy um in and out of the locker room and just being you know somebody that you know you guys as parents can come to me and just talk to me about anything, or players too as well. So that was my whole thing. And I love the game lacrosse. That's something that's like always been near and dear to my heart.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'll tell you what, Tasty. I knew you'd kind of explain it that way. And when you said uh one of my goals was just to be the best teammate, that I wanted to have to anyone who's playing now on the bench now, or is in high school listening to this and gonna go try to play college across. And that is probably a goal that they should all have first, besides before I think getting on the field, because that's how you were. And that is how you probably got the graduate assistant job there because it's at Wingate, it is a competition to get that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, how that happened, like I said, I tore my ACL my senior year. Um, and I kind of was in a situation where I didn't know what I wanted to do. Um, I thought about playing another year just to be, you know, on the field and kind of having that team aspect. Plus, it was a weird time in your life, like you're just about to graduate. You don't know if you want to get back straight into the workforce, you don't know what you want to do. Um, you don't know if you want to baggle back into school. Um, so me, I just kind of didn't know what I wanted to do exactly. So I thought about the opportunity um as like kind of like my last resort. But then Coach Boyle gave me a call one day. Um, actually, really funny story. He called me. I was on the beach uh with James Houston. He came up from Canada home with me after the season ended. Um, and we were on the beach, and Coach Boyle called me like eight times, and I thought I had no service, and I had no service, and he called me eight times and I just didn't answer him. And then after him driving home, he called me again. I was like, oh hey. And I didn't even realize first things he starts with, he goes, you know, I called you like nine times. I'm like, no, I have no idea. But um, yeah, I mean it was it was an awesome experience. I learned a lot about myself, I learned a lot about life. Um, but more importantly, Coach Boyle was just the best person ever. So he kind of taught me a lot and got to learn a lot about lacrosse and a lot about a lot. I learned more about the game as a coach than I did as a player, and it was more just because of the deeper dive into things that he sees. Yeah, that as a player, you don't really think about that much. You kind of just see it as like, okay, cool, it's a scheme. Right. Like we're interested.
SPEAKER_01You're looking through a soda straw instead of the big picture, like he does.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01That's interesting. That's great. That is awesome. What great insight. So, what are you doing now?
SPEAKER_00So, right now I work for a sports entertainment company um here in Charlotte. Um, we do like a bunch of stuff with uh hospitality and high-end events, uh, the Kentucky Derby, Formula One, Super Bowl. Wow. Um, yeah, it's a lot of fun. Uh, I always knew that I want to stay in sports. I that's all I know. So uh if I'm gonna be a if I'm gonna be a desk job my whole life, I'd rather be something that I love. And sports is something I love. And I tell everybody nowadays, it's like my job is the best job in the world. I go to work, talk about sports, uh learn about sports and like the business side of things. And I like to say it's not work, it's kind of an activity uh getting paid for. So it's it's a lot of fun. I love it.
SPEAKER_01Hey, when you find a job that you don't feel is a job, you're in the right place.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. And it's the people that do it too. All the people I'm with are incredible.
SPEAKER_01That's that's fantastic.
Top 10 Roundup
SPEAKER_01All right. Now, before we get to your expertise analysis there, Tasty, we have to let the master chef go through the top ten quick and them all.
SPEAKER_03Uh, this week's top ten. Number one, Lenore Ryan beat Anderson and SAC play cav beat them 12-8. LR plays number two Limestone this Saturday. Yeah. Number two, Rollins holds on to beat a tough athletic flagler team 14-10. Limestone beat LMU rather handily 15-9, and they host LR. Number four, Tampa beat Belmont Abbey rather handily, 18-7, and Tampa plays Wingate in the crown next Saturday. Number five, Adelphi squeaks out a tough win in the rain over Arcy in a 13-12 overtime thriller. Number six, St. A's lost to number 12 Bentley 13 to 11. And St. A's plays uh Franklin's uh Franklin Pearson any 10 play. Number seven, Wingate beat Mount Olive 23 to 6, then Mars Hill 23 to 5, and uh they played Tampa in the crown this week. Number eight, U Indy beat number 11 Seton Hill in another one goal thriller, 10-9. And U Indy plays number 10 Newberry this week. Yeah. Number nine, Mercy lost to number five at Delphi, 13-12 in overtime, like we talked about. And they, Mercy, the Maps, playing number 11 Seton Hill this week. And number 10, Newberry beats Tuscelling 27 to 5. And they play UND. And that's your end of the week.
SPEAKER_01Here we go. All right. So now it's time to shift. So well rehearsed. It's like clockwork. It's like clockwork around here, gentlemen.
Week in Review
SPEAKER_01It's time to shift to week in review. And what a week. A lot of tight games for going in overtime. Tacey, what do you think about this past week?
SPEAKER_00I thought it was a great week, lacrosse. Um, gonna be honest. You know, UNDC in hell overtime, Delphi Mercy overtime. Um, L R and Anderson had a close one. Who else do I have here? I got uh Flagger and Rollins, like you said, Danny, was a really close one. A lot of great games all over the board, and it should be it's great conversation we have here.
SPEAKER_01So then, Danny, what do you think?
SPEAKER_03Kev, ready for this? 46 games took place this week in Division II. Four went into overtime, and one went into double overtime when Bridgeport beat Duelville 11-10. Yeah. So I mean, we had quite a week, and then you know, these top 10 teams are getting after it, and the top 20 getting some shifts around a little bit. St. Leo is got themselves into the top 20.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, there's a and they built on a ranked team and spanked them.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. They beat them up. It was a good game.
SPEAKER_01I watched a little bit, I watched the end of it. I didn't get to see it. I saw the score. I had some people, they had a few people DM'd us about uh St. Leo on our Instagram page. Uh, we'll I can get to that. That's one of my uh shout-outs this week. But let's start off. What games in particular? Tasty, what game? Why don't you start with the Anderson Lenore Ryan game that you talked about?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure. Um, I thought honestly, it was a a look-ahead game for LR, if I'm gonna be honest. You know, as they have limestone, as you said, they have them this week. That's a 1-3 matchup at night, like play in that environment that is very hostile. Um, so I think for me, I thought that was a very much of a look-ahead game. Uh, Danny, listening over the podcast, you love the LR goalie. And I'm gonna say this as a goalie myself. I also love him. I think he's very, very good, uh, very talented. Their defense is really well uh really well played. And um I noticed also that uh Evan Boston play. Um, I didn't know if he was hurt or whatever it may be, but he wasn't in the lineup for them. So uh they put up a pretty good showing on offense, and it wasn't really top heavy, it was kind of spread out throughout the game without one of their best players on offense. But again, I think it's another storyline of their defense coming out to play another week.
SPEAKER_01So um definitely another another game where they keep a team under 10 goals.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, was that your first time seeing LR play this you know this season, Tasty?
SPEAKER_00No, I watched the the Adelphi game. Uh I watched pretty much the whole game, and they uh they their defense is legit. They're from top to bottom. That's yeah, some you know, Powell's Powell, he's I remember watching him as a freshman and always saying to myself, that kid's legit. Uh Ashley, again, Ashley's in you know monsters himself. But their their goalies, their goalie is really stepped up this year. I I had some questions last year watching them in the national championship and kind of the national run that he had. I mean, I had some questions about him, but now I kind of look at him and I'm like, all right, like this kid can this kid can play.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, he's definitely really good. One of the top in the country right now. Yeah, yeah. LR looks good, man. LR works good.
SPEAKER_01They do. They do. We'll probably, I'm sure we'll get to that game and uh games to watch this week. Danny, what do you got? What's uh top one on your list you want to go over?
SPEAKER_03Well, how about the Undie Seton Hill game? Uh what a game. Number eight, yeah, number eight and number 11 getting after it. U Indy squeaks it out 10-9 in overtime. Um, these two teams are getting after it in a hurry, Kev. High energy from both squads in this game. Another evenly matched. Oh, as you know, each team traded goals. The Griffiths, uh, Connor Zostan had a nice first quarter with a goal and assist to help Seton uh Hill to a 4-2 lead after one. Um uh, let's see, what else? Uh the Greyhounds, Sam Pucevic, and Owen Braddock scored goals to bring it to within one. Gramberg scored for Seton Hill to make it 6'4 Griffiths at half. So it was a back and forth first half.
SPEAKER_01What I saw in that first half is it seemed to me that the Seton Hill defense was really doing well shutting the Hounds down on being able to score. Now they still scored four, but I saw that at the uh, especially in the first quarter, Seton Hill was causing enough that they always had the advantage that first half. And then in the third quarter, Undy blanked the Griffins 3-0 to go up 7-6.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, in the third Undy's Nick Ranguard buried one to bring it within one. Then Alex Callahan got called for a push, and Ranguard scored on an EMO to tie it at six. Then Seaton Hill turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions, and Undy's Justin Williams took advantage and buried a biscuit to give Undy their first lead of the game. Uh, 7-6 at the end of the third. Uh Seaton Hill um started the fourth off strong, scoring twice first in the first three minutes, uh, giving the lead uh the grips the lead again, 8-7. The Greyhounds answered on a Nathan Lamb goal to tie it at eight. I mean, it was back and forth. This thing was like a slug fest. Herpster scored at the five-minute mark to give Seaton, Seaton the lead again with nine nine-eight. Schaefer scored on a man up to tie it again at nine. Like this was crazy game. Yeah, yeah, you know, and then um UIndy was able to get four shots off at the two-minute mark, but couldn't find the net. And it was nine-nine at the end of regulation. So you indie had shots right at the end, but just couldn't find the net. And then uh you know, Pusevic buried the one in in in in in overtime, and that was it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he got a great, great assist from Owen Braddock, great pass as he cut. But what's funny is if I looked at the stats, and if you just looked at the stats, once again, this is when we say stats don't always always tell the tale. Shots, you indie had 58, Seaton Hill 33, ground balls, U Indy 34 to Seaton Hill's 19. And U Indy went 20 of 23 at the face-off. So you would think if you were just looking at those, you're like, oh, you indie probably won in regulation by a good amount. No, and I think what it was, and you tell me, Tasty, if you agree with this, it was in the saves. Will Cody of Seton Hill had 15 saves to 10 goals against. Now, Casey Carlson, really good goalie. He won it. He had nine saves. He he was at 50, which is which is great, but those goalie saves and probably the Seton Hill defense kept them in it when they weren't winning those ground balls or those face-offs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, definitely. I mean, like when you have when you're in a situation like that where you know you're not winning at the X, you got to go back and lean to your goaltending and your defense. And um credit to Seton Hill's goalie for you know kind of commanding their defense to make some bird stops at the end, uh, getting some shots. You endy getting shots off at the last two-minute mark and just letting it fly. You probably commanded to that team, like, hey, like keep going, keep pushing, like kind of directing them to you know victory. But you know, at the end of the day, you know, the goalie's gonna be the one that's making all the calls to the defense and kind of being at the anchor. So um credit to Kevin Carlson um for putting up 50. I mean, you just gotta get it at the end of the at the end of the day, you just gotta get you know 50 or higher. That's that's my uh model.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, exactly. Carlson's Carlson's a good goalie, man. You know, he's gotten him, he's much improved since you know, he started as a freshman for Wingate, and then he split time as a sophomore, and then he transferred to Undie. Man, he's been in a lot of big games in his career. He's been in you know conference championships, he's been to NCAA tournaments. He's what I call now the savvy veteran back there in goal.
SPEAKER_00You know, I mean Kev, yeah, Kevin and I are really good friends, and I I talk to him very frequently um about you know just his stuff in Undy, and you know, I'm very proud of him to see him go from you know what he was at Wingate to you know what you know what he is now at UND. I'm always gonna support him. You know, Kevin as a as a young freshman was you know, I kind of like put him under my wing and just took him, took him, took him and you know, I love it. I'm proud of him. You know, he does a really good job there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he does a very great job for Undy. Tristan Schaefer had two goals and two assists, Justin Williams had two goals, Nick Viringard had two goals, Pusevick had two goals, and none bigger than that buried one in the overtime. Yeah, uh Lamb and Braddock each had added one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they Owen Braddock had two assists as well. I mean, so those assists account as much as a goal, in my opinion, always.
SPEAKER_03100%. And and the guy you were talking about at the X, Caleb Parker, he's the senior 20 for 23 at the X. You know where he's from, Kat? Where? He's from Bixby, Oklahoma. I think that might be the first player from Oklahoma that we've discussed. I think so. And he was on fire for the Greyhounds. Yeah. Uh for Seton Hill, Peyton Gensler, two goals, Caden Gramberg had two goals, Carter Green had two goals, Connor Zostan, one goal and four assists. And uh Seton Hill struggled at the X, man. They struggled, they struggled. Mark Strunk and Colin Kirstner combined at three for twenty three. So Undy hangs on in a tough game. You know, Seton Hill's always a great team cap. They always put out Good players that were in that they were in it the whole time.
SPEAKER_01And you, Indy, who we had questions about when we did our top 20, Danny. They continued to continue. Yeah. They they continue to impress me. Let's go to another game that was another overtime game. This was our game of the week last week, I think, Danny. A Delphi against Mercy, number five against number nine. And you called it a barn burner. And I think you called it correctly. A nasty rainy day at a Delphi. And this was a game of runs. Mercy goes up 4-1 after one. And then they score the first one, the second to go up 5-1. Then, and this is funny, Danny. I'm actually out with my wife. I'm watching the game. Then I'm I have to go out with my wife do a few errands. So I'm trying to like catch it on my phone. And I just go to the inside lacrosse scores, and it says, and it was five to one when I left. It said eight five Adelphi. And I'm like, that can't be right. That cannot be right. They must have gotten wrong. So I go to the game really quickly as we're in the in the grocery store. No, it was halftime, eight five. Adelphi exploded for seven straight goals. I went back and looked at this game. I think their D started to click after that first quarter. And then they started to win face-offs, and they even tied it up with a face-off goal to make it five five. They had transition and man up goals in that during that run and a buzzer beater to make it eight-five at half. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03What'd you think, Tasty?
SPEAKER_00I I mean, I've been talking about Adolphe for uh a little while, not being you know the top of the top of the north. Uh, it was the Logan Tucker game. I don't know if you guys saw he had I saw on Twitter he had like a really nice like shovel shot goal. Um he scored one on his back. Yeah, that's what it was. That's what it was. It was like, yeah, it was on his back and he scored.
SPEAKER_01Fell down on his back. It still got the ball off in the goal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was it was nasty. It's four and one, uh, including the game winner. Um, I Dylan Renner at Adelphi, I know him uh pretty well. He's he's a stud in goal. He's a stud.
SPEAKER_03He certainly is.
SPEAKER_00I'm I'm gonna give credit to Mercy's goaltender, uh, Cam Dwarfman.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Freshman freshman last couple games just kind of play. He was above 50% his first four games.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00This is his first game under 50%. And I he still played very well. Uh, and as a freshman coming in and playing a team like that is you know, he he's a kid to watch for for the next couple years, fair.
SPEAKER_01I agree. The one thing I I wrote this about Dylan Renner, too. I wrote this note. Adelphi got a two-minute penalty. Nick O'Shea got a two-minute penalty for a hit to the head. And Renner's the one that kept him. He made two great saves across those two minutes to basically kill the ability of Mercy to tie the score. Now they did tie the score later on because it went to overtime. But think about that. Two minutes, if he had been in there and they had scored a few more on Dillon, then it's Mercy's game. That's how close this was.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know what I say? I say uh Adelphi got some home cooking calls in that game. And I think oh yeah, oh yeah. Nine times Mercy went to the Sin Ben.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Only twice for a Delphi. And there was some, and it's not the calls. It's not the calls, it was the non-calls.
SPEAKER_01The non-calls against Adelphi is what no, against Mercy.
SPEAKER_03I'm saying that a Delphi was getting the home cooking calls.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's what I'm saying. They the the uh the calls that would have been calls against a Delphi to go into the box. Correct. Okay, yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_03There was a few. I, in my opinion, I think a Delphi got robbed a little bit. You know, a nine to two difference in penalties in a game like that, with that magnitude and the amount of the IQ and the players that were on that field and all of that, what that game meant for both squads, you got to call a better game. It can't be so lopsided like that. There were some calls. I'm gonna tell you something. Gerdville was getting after it, especially in that second quarter when they started come, you know, getting beat up. Mercy, I think you know, Mercy shot themselves in the foot a little bit in that second quarter. They did not play good defense. They, you know, it was just it was all a Delphi in that second quarter. Yeah. Gurdville started knocking some people down in the dirt. He was getting calls. But you know what? When the Mercy guys were getting knocked down, Cuner got destroyed on a on a push with possession right after a face-off, got no call. They turned the ball over and they got no call. It was clearly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I remember that now. Clearly. I remember that. I was I in fact, I didn't write that down, Danny, but I remember that now because I thought, did I just see that?
SPEAKER_03One of Hyder's uh one of Hyder scores right after he scored that. I'm not gonna name the defender, took three steps and leveled Heider. That's that's a two-minute unreleasable in my in my in my world. Yeah, you know, so there was some non-calls. I'm not gonna say a Delphi didn't play a great game because they're a great team. I'm just saying they got a little help from the stripes this week. But man, you know what? Like you said, tasty Logan Tucker, man. That kid's a player. He's flat out.
SPEAKER_00He's a player.
SPEAKER_03Four goals and an assist. Kerensky had three goals, Donlin had two goals, Kyle Lewis, the kid that never comes off the field, had five goals and assists in the machine. Doesn't come off the field. It's amazing.
SPEAKER_00I watched him, I watched him in the LR game and I watched a little bit this week. He he's in the machine.
SPEAKER_03Now, you know who impressed me for a Delphi? Is Nick O'Shea. He's not the biggest guy. Yeah, he's a he's a scrappy kid, man. He plays a lot of short stick DM, right? But you know what? He took face-offs.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he went four for 15 and added a goal. I mean, like, he was pretty impressive to me.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's how a Delphi does it. They make they groom guys who weren't who are MIDI's who weren't face-off specialists, and make them face-off specialists.
SPEAKER_03Because the other guys were shitting the bet against Kuner.
SPEAKER_01You know, Kuner was just another day, 20 out of 27.
SPEAKER_03He's a beast, man. How about TJ Heider? Four goals on five shots. Five shots.
SPEAKER_01Calabria, two goals, four assists.
SPEAKER_03They had guys Duchnowski had three.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Greg Gibbons had one goal and three assists. And then Goodville, like you talked about, six ground balls, two cost turnovers.
SPEAKER_03He's an he's an animal, that guy.
SPEAKER_01Another team I questioned really more on the offensive side. Were they going to be able to step up? And they are stepping up, these mercy offensive players.
SPEAKER_03Mercy's good squad, man. And you know what? I think TJ Heider's a really like he's the savvy veteran. He's the fifth year, he's the graduate student. He's been there a while. He's a smart kid anyway. We had him on our program. His IQ, his stick skills. I mean, that kid's got to touch the ball. Every time he touches the ball, good things happen with Mercy. So they're a good squad, man. They're a good squad. I'm really impressed with their goalie, though. Dorfman.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he was under 50% this game, but God's gonna be.
SPEAKER_03They threw him right into the alligators, didn't they? Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And he's and he's knocking, he's knocking the gal Gators back with his oar every time with his paddle. Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_03The freshman.
SPEAKER_01All right. How about another close game? Bentley and St. Anselm on Friday. Bentley pulls it out 13-11. Tasty, did you see any of that game?
SPEAKER_00Uh I took a little bit of notes on it. Um, not too familiar on it, to be honest, but um, I did see that Bentley had some great face-off play um this week for Saint A's. 64% from their uh I have no idea how to pronounce his last name, but Bartolomeo. Bartolomeo. Yeah, he is good. Fellow Italian.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yes, fellow Italian. He he did really well. I think in this game, at first, in the first half, it was Saine's deep defense that made the difference.
SPEAKER_03They held both teams played really good defense in the beginning of the game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's exactly right. That's what I wrote. I think it was just a little bit ahead. That's why it helped Saine get ahead and be 6'4 at half. But I have that, Danny. They both played great defense, really tough defense. I had this question though, Danny. I don't know if you noticed this. It seemed to me like if they got some sort of scout on the Bentley Goalie, Jackson Tinsley, because they were trying to shoot bounce shots all first half against them. Every shot seemed to be a bounce shot.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if that was just my my opinion, but and and most shots seemed to go that way when they did that. But it was six, four at half. And another note I had, and then the Falcons. Then the Falcons fight back in the third to finally go up eight, seven with eight minutes left. It's uh nine-eight Bentley after three, and then they outscore the Hawks five to two in the third.
SPEAKER_03Yes, turnovers that led to those goals.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then St. Ace kind of retakes they retake the lead, they go up 10-9 in the fourth, and then and then after that, the Falcons go up. They basically then score the next four goals to win it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Bentley in the third, they started pressing out. They came out in the beginning of third, pressing out way, way and just making it real hard to get, you know what I mean? Then they were causing turnovers, they were doubling on on the rollbacks, and they were just wreaking havoc a little bit. And those turnovers led to goals for Bentley.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the other thing I noticed in the first half is that both teams had to move the ball really well to score. And that first half, they were not the D defenses were not allowing goals solely on dodges, like they couldn't dodge down the alleys and score. That their D middies were pushing them out. Then it kind of flipped in the fourth quarter where that started happening. I don't know if that was more because they were pressing out in a game of, you know, if you over overcommit, that gave them the alley. But it was really good defense throughout the game.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the fourth quarter was really good. It was a fast-paced quarter, you know, with each team trading shots and saves, and you know, and and just you could see both squads are getting amped up, you know. It was a close game. Then that fourth quarter started to get exciting. Four straight goals by Bentley and some great saves by Tinsley, man, led to a tough, gritty N10 blue-collar kind of game. And it was a good good, tough win for Bentley.
SPEAKER_01I think I Jackson Tinsley had three saves in the fourth to Anthony Kubic's one. There's the difference in the fourth quarter for them to win by two. You're right.
SPEAKER_03He had some great saves that quarter. In the fourth, yeah. He you know, that fourth quarter was exciting. It got amped up. You could see both teams are getting amped up. They were getting after it. Balls were a little chippy, a little pushy, pushy. You know, yeah. I love it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. For Bentley, Nick Harvath had three goals. Nathan Alviti had two. Dave Danyon had two goals, one assist. Nicholas Thorn Guerrero had also had two goals. They had eight total goal scorers, Danny. Yeah, that's that's team ball there. St. A's, Colin Mulvey, three goals, Noah Larson, two goals, two assists. Chris Kaplin with three goals, one assist, and Jake Davis, their transfer from UMass Lowell, two goals.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Kubick with seven stays saves to Saint A's, uh, and Tinsley with 11 saves to Bentley. Maybe might have been the star of the game. I agree. I agree. What other games? Saint St. A's is good, though, man. They're a good squad. Well, they got a lot of things.
SPEAKER_01All these games we just talked about. Yeah. They're good. These teams are good. Are good squads. Very minute differences in the win. Right? It could have won either way in any of these games, you know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Here's one. What do you think, Tasty? These games, right?
SPEAKER_00These they're so close. Yeah, I mean, it's uh like we said, it it comes down to the minute things. You know, one mistake here, one mistake there, penalty here, penalty there. It's all it's all about, you know, perfection and and trying to get it to be, you know, that you have you play the best game you possibly can. And you see in all these games, you know, one goal over time and all this stuff. It one bad mistake, it's it's over. So all these teams coming together and playing, you know, playing tough, tough ball. You just gotta stay composed, stay composed and stick stick to the game plan.
SPEAKER_01There you go. Okay, I've got another one. I I know Danny, you said you didn't watch much of it, I didn't get a chance. I don't know if Tacey, you did, but this was a wild one. Frostburg against Mercyhurst. Mercyhurst pulls it out 15-14. The Bobcats were down 7-2 early in the game. And they fought back to get it to 7-7. And a lot of that had to do with them just really getting aggressive on D, really harassing on the ride, in the middle of the field, causing turnovers. But then the Lakers score uh after a timeout, they got a set play to score with 13 seconds left to go up 8-7 at half. But still, Frostburg continues to kind of win the middle of the ground and causing turnovers to get the ball back and stay within Mercyhurst for the rest of the game almost. But they could never get on top, they could never get ahead. They were always, every time they got close, the Lakers would answer. And then in the fourth quarter, Frostburg made some mental mistakes, in my opinion, that created turnovers on their side that gave Lakers additional possessions and goals. Mercyhurst was up 15-11 with 254 left. And I thought, all right, the way this game has been going, it's been really tight. Now the Lakers have opened it up.
SPEAKER_03Kind of broke it open, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you think Frostburg, there's no way in heck they're gonna come back. Next face off, Frostburg scores off the face off, and then Mercyhurst gets called on a penalty, one minute full time, to give the Bobcats life. Boy, they score again to make it 15-13 on one of their man man-ups, and then Chase Buckwalter cuts in the middle and gets a pass from from McCollum, and they score again with 143 left. It's now 15-14. And you think, wow, oh my god, here we go. No, Mercerhurst wins the face-off. He's like, okay, they really all they need to do is run it out. But Frostburg ends up doubling them, doubling the player, and he steps on the end line. And so now Frostburg has it the ball back, 37 seconds left. And you should hear. I don't know if it's where the the camera is. It's obviously up in the stadiums and right near the Frostburg fans. I swear to God, it sounded like there were 10,000 Frostburg fans blowing horns, screaming. It was great, it was so cool to listen to. They were so loud. They actually bubble love actually got a chance. He dodges down the middle and shoots with 30, you know, less than 37 seconds left, only a few seconds left, but only make Brett only makes a save. Yeah, I saw that. I did, I didn't know that. And that's how the game ends.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was crazy. So Mercyhurst goes to two and two now, and Frostburg's at one and one. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but they are it was it was close. That was a close game. Some of the stats that were kind of interesting. So Frostburg outshot him outshot Mercyhurst 56 to 30. But Mercyhurst in the saves, we talk about this, Tasty, 18 saves to Frostburg six. And in the clears kind of shows how Frostburg was winning the middle of the field. Frostburg went fifth 14 for 15, but Mercyhurst only went 19 for 24. So that's how Frostburg stayed in the game once again by winning that middle of the field.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, I was fortunate to watch Mercyhurst play this year versus Wingate and Brett only. You know, he his tiny stature, but man, he he can he attacks that ball.
SPEAKER_01Don't let that size fool you.
SPEAKER_00Don't let yeah, really, like he's a very fundamentally sound keeper. And I I I've said it to people at the game, I was like, this kid can keep you in it. You he can keep you in the street. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He he played. So the way I I was explaining to um explaining it when I was at the game, I was like, he plays big. And you know, when I'm saying that he, you know, he's he's tiny, he's a small guy, but he's just attacking the ball. He's jumping here, jumping there. He's a fiery, fiery cat.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, totally agree, totally agree.
SPEAKER_03Another savvy veteran, you know, he's been in a lot of big games, big NCAA tournaments, been to national championships. I remember at the end of the first quarter when LR was up by like 37 to 1 at the time in the first quarter of the championship. Only was not happy with his defense. I saw him like, I watched him come off the field and just like give it to his defenders, like, hey guys, you know, pick it up, you know. Like he's a fiery guy. He cares. He's a good player, he's really good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and as long as they're a team that they they started with some tough games. And you know, you have a guy like that in the back in your locker room and on the field, it's you know, it's gonna make you throughout the season say to yourself, All right, those tough games at the beginning of the year, you know, what's we got a guy in our goal, we got a guy in the locker room that's gonna pick us up and kind of lead us to success, you know, throughout the season.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I agree with you. I agree with you. All right, what other games you got? All right, you know what? One that's not a non-ranked game. Seems like we're always going over the big boy games.
SPEAKER_01I got a few more that are non-ranked games. But you know what?
SPEAKER_03Some of these other games in D2 are really good. And these teams are buying for positions, they're buying for conference, you know, wins and trying to get into their conference tournaments. You know, these games mean a lot. And the Kotaba Barton game, even though it's an out-of-conference game for both, that was some game, man. Went into overtime and Barton pulls it out. I I was surprised at that a little bit. Um, Barton pulled it out 11-10 over a Kataba. Barton drew first blood on a Nick Lord's first goal on his first goal of the season. Peyton Leonard answered for Katawba, and Garrett and Barker each scored for Kotaba before Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter, our former president. No, I'm just before Jimmy Carter scored for Barton. The Bulldogs won the ensuing face-off, and Tim Bland scored for Barton, and we were knotted at three. Katawba added two more goals, first Peyton Turner, then Barker, and Katawba led 5-3 after one. Pretty good game so far, you know? Yeah. Pretty good game so far. The second quarter, each team was held scoreless. The defenses are getting after it now. These, you know, these boys are starting to play. They know they're in a game. And uh Jordan Dash scored at the three-minute mark of the second to give Katawba a 6-3 lead. With one second left in the half, Bartons Bryce Washington scored a short-handed goal and brought Barton to within two at halftime. So it was 6-4 Katawba at halftime. In the third, Kataba had three unanswered goals to give the Indians a 9-4 lead. Matt Kalary scored twice. Then Nick Kalary scored for Barton and uh bringing like a three-goal run there, bringing to bringing them to within two now. So now it's like 9-7, Kataba after three. It's a pretty good game.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03These guys are going after it. Kataba struck first in the fourth on a Bakari-Neely goal, and Barton's Matt Kallary answered one minute later to bring it within two again at the 11-minute mark in regulation. Neither team scored for the next seven minutes in the fourth quarter. So it was just guys getting after it in a good old fashioned, good hard fought lacrosse game. Um, when Scalari scored at the three uh to bring it a one goal, 10 9 Kataba at the 119 mark, Nick Caleri scored his eighth goal of the season, and none bigger than that one, because then he tied it just before regulation. 10. So the Kalary brothers are going yeah berserk in this game. Kataba wins the faceoff in OT. All right. He's saying, okay, they're gonna call timeout and and and set up a play. No, they play. They had three shots on goal. Ready for this? Hunter Clark missed wide, and Barker missed queued twice. And on the second shot, they lost possession. So here comes Barton, right? They clear the ball, they call timeout. Good timeout, right? Yeah. Set up a play. There's 37 seconds left in the OT. And Bryce Washington buried the game winner for the Bulldogs, who rally to win a real tough, gritty out of conference game down there in the South. So Cotabba and Barton, that was some game.
SPEAKER_01It was. And we we talked about this last week. Barton has not been the Barton that we saw last year, and they certainly wanted this win. And they were resilient to come back. Kataba, on the other hand, has been playing much better than last year. And that's why this game was really intriguing. The one thing I picked out on the stats that I thought was interesting was Kataba had six man-up opportunities and zero goals. Yeah. Big. Wow. And when you get to that, when it's that close, you know, I'm sure they're going to be looking at how we can improve there. I mean, it was a great game, so you can't, it's not just one thing, right? But that's six chances to put it away.
SPEAKER_03What's it like in the locker room when the team goes 0 for six on an EML?
SPEAKER_00Oh, you oh man. You look around the room and you just you read you read the defensive spaces first, and then you can kind of go to the young guys and just go, what are you doing? But I mean, you kind of try to pick pick them up as much as possible, um, but in a nice way. But all in all, you just gotta, you know, you tell them hey, you get them back next time and you know hit the cage like Sunday morning. You know, you have a game Saturday, Sunday morning, you better be on that field shooting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. So for Barton, Matt Calary had three goals, two assists, two ground balls, and a cause turnover. Quite the day in the office for Matt Calary. Brother Nick had three goals, and uh Bryce Washington added two goals. Uh, Carter, Tim Blanche, and Nick Lord each added one. Cole McCarthy was 11 for 20 at the X, not too bad. And Alex Stewart had 12 saves. And for Katawa, Bakari Neely had two goals. Jordan Dash had a goal and assist. Uh, Gabriel Barker had two goals. Garrett Butler, Leonard, and Peyton Turner each added one. Blake Reese had a good day, not bad. 13 for 23 at the X, and uh James Creighton, 16 saves for Katawa. So he had a good game. Yeah. You know what? That was uh as good as a game as you're gonna get. You know what I mean? These teams were getting after it. Well, and yeah, the second half was great.
SPEAKER_01And here's the interesting thing: the other overtime game we haven't talked about yet went to double overtime, and just like the Barton game, and just like Barton, Bridgeport was down three goals 10-7 in the fourth, and they score three goals the last two in the last minute to tie the game at 10-10. So then they go to overtime. First overtime, just back and forth, nothing. They score the game winner uh in the second overtime because a Saints defender gets caught between two players, kind of in no man's land. He's like right equidistant between them, and he's got to pick one, and he's got no help. No one's sliding over for the other guy, and that's how they score. That's how Bridgeport scores to win the game. Both teams went into this game with only one win, and both were fine to get their second win of the of the season, and Bridgeport pulled it out. It was a really good game to watch.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, four goals for Alex Johnson for Bridgeport. So Bridgeport goes to what? What are they two and two? They're two and two now.
SPEAKER_01Okay, all right. So another way, and here's another game that came from behind North Greenville Lander. Lander pulls it out 16-14, but they were down by seven goals in the second quarter. And North Greenville, we've seen they've been inconsistent this year so far. I watched this game, I thought North Greenville was going to win this game all the way through. Lander kept fighting back, and they go up for the first time with 55 seconds left in the game, and it's 15-14. And then they seal the deal with an open net goal. North Greenville's trying to press them, trying to get the ball back. Lander now goes to 5-1. Yeah, 5-1. Wow. Wow. They are good. One other game I've got, um, and um and is the Davenport Lake Erie game. I told you I was interested in this because Davenport had been has been playing really well this year, really stepped up their game from last year. They've never beaten Lake Erie. They put kind of a commanding win over Lake Erie, 13-5. They were up 7-1 at half. They shut out Lake Erie in the second quarter, 4-0, and they end up winning 13-5. They are now 5-0, Davenport, 5-0, and it's their first ever win over the Storm.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Storm's struggling. They're one and three right now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they're struggling a little bit. But Davenport. And that's why the but just it was just the opposite. Davenport is playing better and better. Jaden Ashley for Davenport, three goals, one assist, Luke Fritz, three goals, one assist. And Dylan Day and Dawson Gillette both had two goals apiece. Here's the interesting thing, and we usually see it the opposite way. Lake Erie had 11 chances at man up. And you think if they've had 11 chances and and and Davenport was only in the box, Davenport, I mean, Lake Erie was only a box three times. Dan Davenport only had three chances. That would be like, okay, Davenport is on D all the time. But they held offensive possession for so much more because Lake Erie only scored one goal on 11 chances. We go back to the same thing that happened with Katawa, right? Six chances, zero goals, eleven chances, one goal.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_01So it's interesting. See how Lake Lake Howard. So Davenport's what's their record? Five and oh, undefeated.
SPEAKER_03Five and oh. And when do they start conference play? Because that's when it all starts to change for Davenport.
SPEAKER_01Well, they're going to the GMAC next year, Danny. And they played a bunch of GMAC teams already. So they're playing about the the, you know, they they're in the GLVC now. I'd have to look at it. Good for them. No.
SPEAKER_03I'm glad to see Davenport at 5-0. I think that's the first time since you and I have been doing this podcast.
SPEAKER_01I think this could be the first time ever they've been fighting.
SPEAKER_03So that that kind of start, yeah. Yeah. Good for them. Hey, tasty. You said you watched the Rollins Flagler game. What do you got?
SPEAKER_00I I I see, you know, like I said, like I said in the LR game, a lot of spread out scoring. Scor all over the board. There's just they don't have, I mean, Mikey Berkman, obviously, you know, he led the charge with six points, three and three, but from top to bottom, it was spread out. And I think about that game versus Delphi this week. I know we'll talk about it a little later, but man, both goaltend, that goaltender and Rollins, you know, he's obviously he got, I think he was goaltender of the year last year. He's a bigger dude, but he's fundamentally fundamentally sound from top to bottom.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Syracuse transfer. Yeah, he's good. Shah. You can tell. Kevin got to meet him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I met him during the alumni game. I we actually had him on the podcast last year, Shae Ketchadurian. And then I went down there, watched the alumni game. Yeah, talked to him a little bit, talked to Mikey Bergman, told him they had to step up their game this year. They weren't that good last year.
SPEAKER_03I'll tell you what, Coach Lewis is lucky to get out of there with that win. He was lucky. Let me tell you something. Kevin and and and Anthony, not for nothing. Coach Brian Duncan is a phenomenal coach. He has this team really cooking and just they're in their third season, Kevin. Yeah. As a program.
SPEAKER_01And they had a Rollins, it was 11-10 in the fourth quarter.
SPEAKER_03Let me tell you something. I'm I I'm impressed with Flagler. I am impressed with Coach Duncan and what he has these kids doing. They played really well. You know what? Rollins, just a little deeper. You know that. They got just, you know, they're a little bit better. They're a little bit bitter. But man, Flagler gave them everything that they could handle. I give I give the Flagler a lot of credit. I love that team. I really do. That's one of my teams that I just really like the what they do. I'm on the field, you know, they're it's relatively young. They got, you know, they got some juniors and seniors in there, but they're relatively young.
SPEAKER_01They're playing a lot smarter this year and a lot crisper than last year. You know, and passing and and in their defense, how they're working together. I really have seen it, and that just comes with experience. And now they've they've got it. There's a third year under Duncan doing this, and they're coaching.
SPEAKER_03And coaching, like they're not making a whole lot of mistakes. You know, they're not making the mistakes that they made in the first two years on the field. Exactly. They're not making those mistakes, not even close. And I'm telling you, man, Rollins, Rollins was lucky to get out of there with a win, man, because the flag was at it was at St. Augustine. You know, the Flagler fans were out there, man.
SPEAKER_01Two games in a row. Florida Southern pulls away with a win, one goal win. They were lucky to beat Flagler. Rollins was lucky. I agree with you. Lucky to beat Flagler.
SPEAKER_00I think they're played Flagler played tough against Tampa, too. They played really tough against Tampa.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I agree. I agree with that. I just like the Flagler team. I think they're a good squad. I really, really like the coach. I just think he's got like some pedigree and just like what he's been able to do in just a really, really short period of time. The following segment of Increase is sponsored by LaxJobs.us. Games to Watch this Week
SPEAKER_01All right. Now it's time to turn the page and go to the games to watch this week. And like we did last time with our guest analyst, we turned it over to Luke. And now I'm turning it over to you, Anthony. What games are you looking at this week? Give us one or two off the top.
SPEAKER_00Off the top, I mean, I'll talk about a Delphi Rollins. I mean, I mentioned it a little earlier. Um Rollins is going to Long Island. So it's a Florida Long Island game when you think about that. Um and like you said, Rollins hit the top of top of the south, Adelphi top of the north. A big time goalie game, I like to call it, you know, runner and uh Rollins goalie. How do you pronounce his last name?
SPEAKER_01Catchedurian. Catch a durian.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes. Catchedurian. Yeah, he's they're both fantastic goalies and offensively on both sides of the ball for Adelphi and Rollins. Um, my thing with this game is you know, can Adelphi's defense shut down that you know high pace, high firing offense? And at the face off ask, can Delphi, you know, steal a couple? Because Rollins got a good two, you know, two uh two-man kick over there. So I think that would be you know, if they can kind of pull one out with the on the out of the face-off X, I think that'd be a big one. So who do you like? Who do you like? I like a Delphi 10-9. 10-9. I like a Delphi.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'll tell you, no overtime regulation. Yeah, Delphi should be three and one when they go into this matchup. They play Malloy on six marks. Now, Malloy's been playing well, so you can never count it out. But they should be three and one. Now, Rollins is undefeated, but I personally think you know they haven't been playing at the level they need to be to be a Delphi. I mean, to beat a Delphi. They had two close matches with Concordia and then Flagler, and that's not indicative of how they finished those games. They, you know, it's 10-5 for Concordia and 14-10. So you're like, oh yeah, well, they took care of them. No, both teams were in it near the end, so they've got to step up their game. If they're playing it that close, a Delphi will will win out.
SPEAKER_03Wow. So who do you like? You like you're not picking? You're not picking.
SPEAKER_01I think this is I actually think this is a pick'em game. Oh, it's a pick'em game. Yeah. Okay. I think this one's a pick'em game. I think Rollins will step it up, but they're playing at a Delphi.
SPEAKER_03Playing at a Delphi is not easy. And there's gonna be a lot of people like they come in droves at a Delphi. A lot of like we say it all the time. You go to an A Delphi game, that that stadium's gonna be pretty, pretty crowded, and a lot of a Delphi fans. So Rollins is gonna be in for a game, probably their toughest game of the season. Um the goalies in this game. You called it tasty. Yeah, the the goalies in this game catchable are gonna be huge. That's gonna be a big telltale sign. I think the X is gonna be huge. And I think at that trends towards Rollins' side. Yeah. Okay. A Delphi's strugging a little bit at the X, they're throwing multiplayers in there when they're still sending short stick D Mids in there to go, you know, against Quner. You know what I mean? So Rollins is gonna be a tough out for a Delphi. A Delphi home.
SPEAKER_01I like Rollins by two. All right. I like it. All right, Tasty. Give us another game you're looking at. And I I I gotta think you gotta pick your home homeboys for one of the.
SPEAKER_00Oh, of course, of course. That's where I was going with. I had to give a little love to a Delphi and Rollins. I saw that game on the board and I I had to talk about it. Um, but yeah, Tampa, Wingate, the Crown in Charlotte. Um, you know, this is a pretty, pretty heavy matchup right here.
SPEAKER_01Uh, you coached it. You you didn't play, you coached during the crown classic, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I I coached. So I've been to the crown twice, coached, and then as a fan. Um, it's definitely definitely a lot better as a fan than it is a coach, even though it was awesome coaching, but uh you got kind of get you know get emotions out a little bit you know better than it was. But um yeah, I mean this is such a cool great game. It's such an awesome environment. You know, they they get to start the game off at 11 o'clock, and uh the days are gonna go on and have amazing games all day long. So I think that's just the start with this one's awesome. And let's just you know, talking about you know, the an underrated storyline in this, I think, would be like the coaching um history in this, you know, Coach Clark at Tampa versus Coach Boyle. They have history, you know, with their histories at their old old universities. And now, you know, this is starting kind of a new history degree with you know, Tampa and Wingate. And then also another big storyline would be Matthew Bidow versus you know Willie Greco. It's kind of you know best defensive player in the country versus the best offensive player in the country, you know, who's gonna win that battle. Um, and that's you know a big storyline. And I think, you know, for me, you know, as a you know, as an alumni, as a huge fan, go to the games now, and it's you know, kind of an outsider in the locker room, it's kind of like who's gonna step up uh out of the offense on out of the midfield specifically. Because if you saw like the last couple games, attack-wise for Wingate, they're getting it done. And you gotta see midfielder-wise, you know, who's who's gonna come out and who's gonna come firing and who's gonna, you know, set the tone early. You know, last year versus limestone, they came out, they set the tone early, and you know, kind of seeing who's gonna do that for them. And then for Tampa, you know, you look at it, they have firepower all over the field. So you gotta look at it from their perspective of who is gonna be that guy, or is it gonna be a storyline like I talked about earlier with you know how LR played against Sam Anderson and now Ronald's played against Flaggler? Are they gonna spread the ball out a little bit or are they gonna have one guy just take over?
SPEAKER_01That's a great that's a great take.
SPEAKER_03That's a great take. Kev, what do you think?
SPEAKER_01I don't I'm not gonna add anything to that uh uh because I think you said it really well. I guess the real I and I love the venue. I've only got to go one year when they uh Wingate had a night game. It was electric, and I'm sure it will be again this year. My question to you, Danny, who do you have in this game?
SPEAKER_03Well, Kevin, you know what? I I look at I'm looking at all the ingredients. You know, we talk about the ingredients in lacrosse. You gotta have all the ingredients, and I think about first thing that pops into my head is Wingate's defense. They've held four out of their last five opponents to less than 10 goals. If you saw the defense in the last two games, teams couldn't even clear the ball. This defense is wreaking havoc. And James Sullivan, the the transfer Thomas Sullivan. I'm sorry, Thomas Sullivan, who I just met. Yeah, I just met him. I'm sorry, Tom. James Tom. Oh my god. Sully. Just yes, just Sully. For God's sake, it's just Sully. You know what? He's been playing, he's been standing on his head. Yeah. Um the first couple of games, like you said, uh tasty, the offense wasn't clicking, but they scored 46 goals in two games the last two games. That fab five for Wingate has come together again. Two of two two of the starters are back.
SPEAKER_01The two games they the two teams they just played are not at Tampa's level. Let's just admit that.
SPEAKER_03Not at all. But when you have your entire offense back and you throw up goals like that, that you got to win games like that. You know, you should win games like that.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I agree.
SPEAKER_03You know, I didn't expect 23. You know, I expect 16, 17, not 23. The Fab Five looked good. Every one of those guys in both those games contributed big time. So the midfielders were getting goals. You know, you were talking about it was all attack. Now you put Bidot on Willie Greco, and you're gonna put your second best defender on Danny Riley, and now you have Sean Clark. I like Wingate in this game. I think they're a little bit deeper firepower, and I'm not so sure about Tampa's goalie right now. You know, they they they've been letting up points at Tampa. They're winning games, but they're letting up points. So yeah, no idea. And Wingate's got a two-no record at the Crown Classic. Yeah. So I'm gonna go with the Bulldogs on this one. I think it's a big game for them.
SPEAKER_01I I agree, and I agree with your assessment, especially in in goal. And I Tacey, I agree with you too. Wingate's got to come out and control the game to begin with. If they do that, like they did against Limestone last year in the Crown Classic, this is their game. Danny, and what games are you looking at?
SPEAKER_03Um, I got a few games. I like the AIC. Well, first of all, let's just say that seven out of the top ten teams play each other this week. Yeah, they're all ranked. Okay. So my question is. When was the last time all the top ten ranked teams played each other on the same day almost? Yeah. That's gotta be a maybe a first in Division II. So what what? We got a one plays three, a four plays seven, six now, a six now, yeah, a five plays two and Newberry uh Mercy, they play Seton Hill, number 11, right? Yep, and Newberry, who's number 10, plays number six, number eight U Indy, right? That's that's cool. Any of those games, you can pick any of those games to watch. They're all gonna be great games, and they all have national stuff written on it. These these teams uh, you know, limestone and not only that, the limestone LR game, that's a that's a conference game. That's a conference game.
SPEAKER_01We'll we'll get to that in a little bit.
SPEAKER_03So I like uh those off those teams, yeah off the top seven, teams that I like to watch on the side. I I like that AIC post matchup. I think that that's gonna be a really, really good game.
SPEAKER_01So here's something else about that, Danny. AIC has started this year 3-0. Yeah, they only won two games last year. Yep. They play four games in seven days. They played Davis and Elkins today, they beat them 25 to 8. Then they then they have post on Wednesday, then they turn around to Roberts Wesleyan on Friday the 8th, and then they play DeUville on Sunday the 10th.
SPEAKER_03Let's see where AIC ends up at the end of this little gauntlet run of theirs.
SPEAKER_01This is really a telltale uh I I had this down. I had Deuvil because I want to see what they've got left in the tank on Sunday, but the postgame on Wednesday, this this already happened by the time the podcast comes out. But that is gonna be a good matchup. And I think Roberts Wesleyan, they're they're gonna be struggling, struggling a little bit. Yeah, gonna be tough.
SPEAKER_03I like the yellow jackets. I like the yellow jacket. Let's go, boys.
SPEAKER_01Tell you what, he's turned that turning that program around.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it certainly has. So, who else you got like games to watch this week?
SPEAKER_01Well, you mentioned the some of the biggies, so I'll skip those. I've also got one, another top 20. Colorado Mesa against Maryville.
SPEAKER_03That should be a good game. Friday.
SPEAKER_01Maryville's 4-1. They just beat Lynn today 11-10, which kind of surprised me after they've taken care of how tight a game they played against Wingate, how they smoked a good Alabama Huntsville team, and how they played against Lewis. Colorado Mesa comes in at 2-0. And they've got a lot of firepower on their team, Tasty. But they have not been tested yet, like they're going to against Maryville. This is going to be a good matchup.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Maryville is very watching them versus win game. Maryville can shoot. They have really good offense and they move the ball quick. Um, they got some big dudes there too that can be really physical at attack. You're right. You're right. That'd be an interesting, interesting, uh, interesting matchup there.
SPEAKER_01I I've got another one. Interesting. This is next Tuesday on March 12th. It's Young Harris against Shorter. Two teams that are moving into Conference Carolinas next year. Young Harris is already there now. Both teams with improved play this year. Shorter, huh? Yeah, but even Young Harris. Young Harris, I think, is gonna win this one out. Wow. But it's gonna be a close game. And then I'm also looking at the next Wednesday, March 13th, is the Frostburg-Bentley matchup. Frostburg showed they belong to the close game against Mercyhurst. This is another big test, a bigger test, because I think Bentley's better. Bentley's coming off a big win against St. A's, and after they play Frostburg, they play a Delphi on Saturday, March 16th. So could this end up being a trap game for them?
SPEAKER_03Interesting. Good take. Good take. I like uh on Sunday, March 10th, uh, Mercy Hearst plays St. A's. St. A's travels out to PA. Yeah, that'll be a good matchup. That should be a good one. That's you know, that'll that'll tell you where Saint A's really stands, I think. Yeah, I would say And Mercy Hearst, too. They're two and two. They need wins, man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I I I I give St. A's the nod there. Yeah, me too. Me too. Are you looking at any other tasty? Any other games you got on your list?
SPEAKER_00Um, nothing particularly. I think those two that I mentioned are probably the ones that I'm gonna be eyeing on the most. And then and daddy, you got me hooked on that AIC post game, man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm telling you, it's gonna be a good game. It should be, you know, an evenly matched game, you know. Just because some of these teams aren't in the top 20 doesn't mean they're not playing good lacrosse. You know, yeah, we tend to talk about the top big games, and a lot of the big games are these top 20 type games. And, you know, these teams are buying for national championships and stuff like that. But there's teams that are on that next level down that are fighting for conference, you know, playoffs, you know, getting in the tournament. Yeah, getting in the tournament, and you never know, you know, on any given Sunday, you know, you get somebody that goes down with an injury, the ball bounces in the biscuit in the right spot, and you can come away with a victory. And next thing you know, you're moving on in conference play. So these other games that we speak about that we don't speak about as much, like the AICs and the DU Bills, you know, Bridgeport we spoke about tonight, you know, um Shorter, we spoke about tonight, Davenport, we spoke about tonight. All teams that are vastly improved. Vastly improved.
SPEAKER_01Yep, and I've got one more on my list for Saturday, March 9th, and that's Florida Tech against Westminster. Here's why. Westminster started off 2-0, but they haven't played since February 24th. And like we've seen before, when the Armac comes on road trips, they need this road win for recognition. Now, Florida Tech has started off slow, they're one and four, but look who they played already Rollins, Tampa, Limestone. Yeah, I mean, come on, they beat they do not want to drop this one at home. No, it's gonna be a good matchup.
SPEAKER_03So those are my games this week. I really like the AIC post. He got seven top ten matchups in one week. If you're if you're a lacrosse fan, this is a great week for Division II. This might be one of the best weeks ever since we've running this podcast, Kevin.
SPEAKER_01I agree. And then you start getting into really where it's gonna start hitting conference play, yeah, which is always interesting. Absolutely.
Game of the Week
SPEAKER_01Okay, as the intro said, it is time for the game of the week. Second one we've done here, and just as a reminder to our audience, this is a game that the In the Creed Knuckleheads, and that includes you now, Tasty. So you're now a knucklehead, which you probably never wanted to be. We unanimously chose this prior to coming on and doing the podcast as the premier matchup of the week. And how could we not choose number one against number three? Lenore Ryan against Limestone. What do you guys think?
SPEAKER_03Barn burner, it's gonna be a barn burner. It's gonna be a great game.
SPEAKER_00What do you think, Tasty? I think it's gonna be an unreal game. Um just I think it's gonna be bloodbath back and forth. Both teams don't like each other. Kind of the start of the sack, you know, games played for them. A big thing for me that I kind of in my notes, in my in my big recording notes, uh Zach Terry, who I I'm a big fan of. Uh he reminds me a lot of uh former Wingate player Adam Vognik. Just how he just catch, just finisher, catch, and shoot type guy. 28 goals, zero assists, and in three games last year versus LR, six goals.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like that it's just he's a really good player, and it's just the question is it's like LR's defense has been playing so good. Are you gonna limit him? Are you gonna stop him? What's their game plan? It should be really interesting, and I'm really excited for this one.
SPEAKER_03Well, Zach Terry was held scoreless last game. Zero, zero goals for you know, on seven shots, which is amazing to me. All right. Limestone's offense is great, their defense is pretty good. They're a little suspect in goal. This is my this is my take on it. Um, Lenore Ryan's offense is very good. They have multiple scores, multiple guys can put the biscuit in the basket, and their defense might be the best in the country right now, or one of them, one of the you know, top three. Um, the forecast is calling for rain on Saturday. So, you know, uh uh a rain kind of slows a fast offense like limestone's down a little bit and it might slow Lenore Ryan's offense down a little bit. So I think this game comes down to defense, and I'm gonna have to give the edge to LR on this one. They'll be on the road at Limestone.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Interesting that you say that I'm tracking what you guys are saying. I basically wrote in my notes limestone offense against Lenore Ryan D, but I don't think that's the true story. Maybe you even flip it. Like, can limestone's defense step up against LR? And and what does the LR offense do? You know, I it may be the the flip story, but I think the major line, you look at limestone offense with they've got, I think, a little more offensive power than than Lenore Ryan with Zac Terry, Mike McGarry, Carterbrand, Jason Tom Ford, Nate Senes, Austin Lamro, and then Tim Ladner at face-off has been going about 69%. Now, the only now I mean then you look at the LRD, Victor Powell, Nate Ashley, Joey Masson, Colt McCracken. I mean, they just Pennsylvania and go. Yeah, when you shut down so many teams and a team like a Delphi, that many goals, you know, to under 10 goals, they've got the total right there.
SPEAKER_03Three for Adelphi, three goals.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Here's the other thing I would say Limestone really hasn't been tested yet. The highest ranked team they played is Florida Southern. LR has played U Indy, Tampa, and Adelphi. If you look at recent history between these two, they basically have split. They split in 2022, one game apiece. Last year, LR was on top, two wins to one. LR lost in the sack finals to limestone, but then came back and beat him in the NCA Final Four. I agree with you, Danny. I give the edge to LR, even being down there in Gaffney, just what they have done so far and what their defense can do. I give the defense more points than offense in this one.
SPEAKER_03Again, like you just hit the nail on the head. I don't think, you know, honestly, that limestone's really played anybody really that good. I mean, Florida Southern's a good team, but they're ranked 18. They're not one of the better offenses in the country, and they're not one of the better defenses in the country. How much did St. Leo put up on Limestone? You know? Right.
SPEAKER_01You know, I think it was like 14 points.
SPEAKER_03Teams can score on them. You gotta kid that can, you know, rip, you know, grip it and rip it. Teams can score on limestone. The thing is, limestone's been outscoring the other teams. You know, if you score, if the other team scores 17 and you score 18, you win. You understand? Yeah. So again, I agree with you. Limestone's, you know, as of right now, their schedule hasn't been as difficult as LR's. I think LR, I think LR's got the uh a little bit of an advantage here in this game.
SPEAKER_00Who wants it more, game? Who's gonna want it more? I didn't know it was gonna rain, Danny. That was a great little insight there. Um, but I think I I I agree with you guys. I think LR really is taking it. Um I think it's gonna be a really high-scoring game. I also think it's gonna be back and forth. And I think that it's like you said, I think a big factor in this is is goaltending for limestone and limestone's defense. You know, if they can if they can make stops, they'll they'll keep a close game. But if they're gonna if they're gonna, you know, kind of let them like let them go, let them lose, it it could get ugly. Um I'm not I'm not gonna I'm gonna keep it frank.
SPEAKER_01Well, I I think this is instrument interesting because unlike LR playing a Delphi, limestone knows LR. LR knows Limestone very well. And if you look at past games, they're not always close. And there's a team that wins by several goals. In the past years, I looked at it. You know, there is a team that's won by eight, ten goals, and then the next game, the other team wins. So this is round one between limestone and LR.
SPEAKER_03Yep, it's a conference game, and but it has national implications this game. Totally. Definitely has national implications, you know, towards the end of the season. Both of these teams are looking to get to the national championship, you know.
SPEAKER_01Both of these teams. It's like you said, Danny, barn burner. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Who do you like?
SPEAKER_01Who do you like in this game, Kev? Uh Lenore Ryan.
SPEAKER_03Who do you like, Tasty?
SPEAKER_00LR. I think it's gonna be uh 17-15 game.
SPEAKER_03Wow. I don't think it's gonna be that high because of the rain and because of the you know the defense. I think it's gonna be a little bit of a lower scoring game. Not too many teams. Nobody scored more than 10 goals on LR all season. So I think it's gonna be a lower scoring game. I think it's gonna be a three-goal win for LR, like 11, 7, 8, you know, something like that.
SPEAKER_00I think that expect his goaltending for limestone, though. If they if their goalie comes out and makes the first three, watch out.
SPEAKER_01Well, there you go, from a goalie himself. He's always gonna lean that way, which he should. That's right.
SPEAKER_00Always. And vice versa. If LR's goalie comes out and makes the first three, it's you know, it's kind of well, put the hand towards him.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Should be a great game. Should be a great game. And you know, and definitely the game of the week for us in the crease knuckleheads.
Shout Outs
SPEAKER_01All right. All right. Now we get to close it out. And we get to do shout-outs. Tasty. How many people have asked you to give them a shout-out since you said you're gonna be on the podcast?
SPEAKER_00A few, a few here and there gave me, uh, gave me some words.
SPEAKER_01Um the floor is your, my friend. You're you're the floor is yours.
SPEAKER_00Um, I'm gonna shout out all. Um, I can't just go individually, so I'm just gonna go as a whole, uh, the Wingay alumni. Uh see you Saturday, bright and early, 8 a.m. in the parking lot.
SPEAKER_01A little brunch, a little brunch plan there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, a little brunch plan. Yeah, yeah, we got a little brunch plan going on. And uh specifically, shout out Mike DeWedge. Uh he's over in uh he's over in um police uh state trooper school right now. So I told him yesterday when he was driving up back to back to base. Um going on. So I told him, hey, listen to listen on your ride home on Friday when you get out of work, when you get out. So shout out Mike. Yesterday was his birthday, so happy birthday.
SPEAKER_03Happy birthday, Mike. His freshman year, he spent more time in the box than I've ever seen anybody. Oh yeah. He's a banger. He was. Who else you got? Who else you got, Tasty?
SPEAKER_00Um, I'm gonna shout out the the the current group right now. I'm gonna give him a shout out now. Good luck to them uh this weekend. Um tough matchup. You know, keep your head straight. Uh stick to the game plan. I know Coach Boyle's gonna give him a great game plan and great blueprint to you know to come out on top. But uh shout out to them. They're a great group of guys. Um, you know, I'm pretty much at every home game, you know, now since I'm local, so get to chat with them every so often. And you know, they come to me, ask me questions about you know the game or just stuff about life. So shout out to them. You know, they're a great group of guys. And um, you know, we gotta get a good thing going over there.
SPEAKER_01I love it. I love it. Any others?
SPEAKER_00Oh, my dad. Shout out to my dad. He's a great guy.
SPEAKER_01Shout out to There you go. Don't leave your mom out of it now. Come on. Yeah, I'm gonna go. There we go. There we go. There we go. The cook, the cook. All right, I got a few shout-outs. Do you want me to go or do you want you to let you end this one, Danny? Here are mine. I've got two individual ones. The first one is Greg Palmer of St. Leo. In their 22-12 win over Montevallo, he tied the single game scoring record with eight goals. The baller. And broke the school's the school's single game points record with 12.
SPEAKER_03Wow. That's a great that's amazing. Yeah, he's good. And you know what? St. Leo's had some really good players and all Americans there over the years. So not an easy task. Congratulations, Mr. Palmer.
SPEAKER_01Okay, this is my my next individual one, and I have to admit I'm biased with this one. This is my favorite player, Evan Deere of Frostburg State. We talk about D Middies, Danny, and you and I have had this conversation off podcast. You can't always look at the stats and how they play, right? If you watched Evan Deere play against Mercy Hurst, his stats read one ground ball, one cause turnover. That doesn't tell the story. If you watched him, he was relentless on D, throwing his five foot three body around like he didn't give a damn. It was amazing. He got people out of position. Just I every time I watch him do that, he is not afraid to go up against anyone.
SPEAKER_03He plays like he's the youngest brother of five kids.
unknownYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's the way he plays. He's a little animal out there.
SPEAKER_01He's like the gnat that won't go away. Yeah, it's tough to score on him, man. It's tough. He's so much fun to watch. Okay, now I've got about I've got four team shout outs. The first two, Danny, are actually on teams that lost this past week. First is Lincoln Memorial. They held Zach Terry to zero points, which contributed them to the narrowest margin win for limestone this season. It was still eight goals, but that's still the narrowest. So, and we've talked about teams like this. The goal of teams Lincoln Memorial is not always to beat the big boys, but narrow the margin each year. And that's what they're doing. Now we've already talked about this team. My next one is Flagler. Because Flagler is playing with the big boys now. They really are with Ronlins 11-10 in the fourth until they broke it open. So a shout out to them. Now here's my next one. Emory Riddle. Emory Riddle lost their first two games by pretty good margins against Flagler and Anderson. But now they followed up with two wins against quality opponents, North Greenville and Monteval, who is ranked.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01This team is starting to gel under John Jez.
SPEAKER_03Yes, that's uh yeah, absolutely. I couldn't agree with you more. It just shows you what the presence of John Jez is there. It means it means a lot. Emery little is gonna be a good, they're gonna get good, man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. My last my last one is pace. Once again, they prove that their ranking, when they haven't played a game, deserves to be where it's at because they've had two convincing wins out of the gate. Yeah, 100%. So those are my shout outs. Over to you, my friend.
SPEAKER_03All right. My first shout-out goes to Sebastian Simonson, the junior attack from St. Michael's. Four goals and one assist to lead St. Mike's to a 17-1 route over Felician.
SPEAKER_01Good game there. St. St. Michael's has been playing really well this year. Yeah, that's I was just it caught my eye. Watch them to see if they get into the Nintendo tournament this year.
SPEAKER_03I think they got a legitimate shot. I do too. You know, Southern New Hampshire, too.
SPEAKER_01You know, it's gonna oh, it's gonna be fun.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Uh Scott Reed, the senior attack from Newberry, seven goals, one assist for an eight-point game against Tuscalum. Newberry is a good squad. I would not want to play Newberry. Telling you now, they're the quiet assassins right now. They're sitting in the top 10.
SPEAKER_01And and Tasty, your Wingate boys have to take them on shortly after playing Tampa.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and Wednesday. That's a short turnaround.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Ah, you talked about Greg Palmer. I'm going to talk about the St. Leo Lions for the 22-12 upset over number 19 Montevallo this week and knocking them into the top 20.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Good job, St. Leo. Get into the top 20. I mean, and last but not least, Carter Linkletter and Andrew Boy are scoring four goals apiece as AIC dismantled Davison Elkins 25-8. And AIC goes to 2-0, Kev. So the Yellow Jackets get some shout-outs tonight.
SPEAKER_01They're 3-0 now.
SPEAKER_03Oh, 3-0. My bad. Yeah. So they get some shout-outs. Good job, fellas. Keep it up.
SPEAKER_01I love it. I love it. And before we go, I have to say, I think Tasty can open his own restaurant. He's that good of an analyst.
SPEAKER_03Or run his own podcast. No, you did a great job tonight, Anthony. You really did, man. I really appreciate you coming on. You're a great kid. Well, I'll probably see you on Saturday. I don't know if I'll be there by eight o'clock. I don't know if I'll be there. I don't know. I don't know. It's a little early for the old man. We'll see. We'll see. Um, but yeah, it should be fun. It should be a great time. You were great as a wing gate uh player. Um, again, you were a good teammate. When you talked about being a good teammate, you are a good teammate. You were really good. Um, my son and those guys love you. You know that. And uh you were a great guest tonight. I'm glad you came on. Tell mom and dad we were asking for them. And uh who knows, maybe we'll get to do this again. What do you say? I hope you had fun.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, thank you guys. I appreciate it. Um, anytime you guys want me to come back, more than well, more than happy to.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. We can't wait to have you back on sometime soon. And with that, Danny and Tasty, that's a wrap. That's a wrap, yeah. That's a wrap.
