Intro
SPEAKER_08Aloha, aloha, aloha to another episode of In the Creek with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stenstrom, and with me as always is the D2 Lax version of Hawaii 5.0, Dano Moran. Hey, Danny. I'm doing well again out in Hawaii, huh? Yeah, it's a tough life. I'm actually out here for a conference. We should just we're recording on Tuesday. We just recorded yesterday the uh the player spotlight. I'm doing it on my lunch break at this conference. Danny actually uh you allowed to come a little bit early. We're doing a little bit earlier than we usually do. It's 5 p.m. where you are, it's 12 noon where I'm at.
SPEAKER_07Who knows where we're at, but let's see what we can do today. All right, that's great. So, another great and exciting week of uh Division II members across here in the NCAA Kada. A couple of shockers, a couple of upsets, a couple of teams moving into the top 20. It's getting it's cool. It's good. It is really cool. And you know what? We've had some big, big games all early in the season already.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, and the two at the Crown Classic were just epitomized that with, you know, top, really top two, four top ten teams playing. And we'll get into that later. Before we get into your top ten, I do have a correction I have to make. I got it from the source, Coach Chris Lewis of Rollins, that I have been botching names again. So I had to set the record straight. First of all, their goalie, Max, is not Max Buke. His last name is pronounced Boyk. Boik. We've heard it. I I was telling Coach we've heard it as Buke, Buick, and he's like, no, it's Boik. I'm like, thank you for that. Alright. And then he said, and I screw this up, and and we talked about this yesterday, Danny. You corrected me too. They're attack man, Tacman, Sean Caracciolo. Caracciolo. Caracciolo. You see, I'm from New York, and we have a lot of Italians up here. I butchered it. Coach was funny. He says, Kevin, just let it flow.
SPEAKER_07It just rolls off the tongue. That's funny. That's good.
SPEAKER_08And the thing I want to point out is we butcher names all the time. And we even said it before. I hope I get that right. Please, please, please. If you get a name wrong, we're knuckleheads. Send us a DM, give us a text. However, you know how to get in contact with us, let us know how to say the player's name correctly. We're happy to do it next time. We may still get it wrong. We've done it before, but we'll try.
SPEAKER_07Boik and Correcciolo.
SPEAKER_08Correcciolo. We got it. We got it now. Yeah, we're going to have to.
SPEAKER_07Watch, we'll screw it up. I guarantee we'll screw it up again. All right.
SPEAKER_08Are you ready to give your top ten?
SPEAKER_07I am, Kev. This is a like I said, it's been a crazy week, and this is
Top 10 Roundup
SPEAKER_07your right, Kev, this week, week three in uh Division II, top ten. Number one, Adelphi beat Mercy 15 to 7. They go to 3-0, and they're on their way out west. Kev, they're gonna go to the West Coast to play in CUI, and then Dominican of California. Am I correct? Yeah, we'll get to that a little bit. I've got the whole layout for that later on. All right, cool. Number two, Tampa beat Seton Hill in a good one at the Crown Classic, 13-8. Uh, Tampa goes to 7-0. Uh, they face Maryville next, and uh Tampa, actually, they're our new number one this week. So we'll get into that. Number three, LR beat Wingate 9-6 in a defensive showdown. Great game. Uh the Bears go to 5-0. They face Anderson next. Number four, Limestone beat Coker rather handily, 21-4. The Saints uh run to 6-1, and they face LMU in Gaffney, South Carolina next week. Number five, Wingate lost to LR 9-6. They go to 4-1, and they host Mars Hill next week. Number six, Pace beat Wilmington 13-8. Uh the Setters go to 2-0, and they face Georgian Court next. Number seven, Rollins lost to number 17 upset alert here. Lost to number 17, Flagler, 13-6 on the road. And they face CUI next, Rollins does. Yeah. Number eight, Seton Hill lost to Tampa 13 to 8. And they travel to Lake Erie, then UI. So they got a couple of games coming up this week. Number nine, UIndy, another shocker, lost to Monte Valo 13 to 12, and they face Seton Hill next. And number 10, Meryville beat Quincy 13 to 5, and they travel to Tampa. They're coming down south, Kev, and uh to face the Spartans. So that's your own. Just a couple of quick scores and notes. Uh uh scores of note. St. Mike's over Robert's Wesleyan last week, uh, 13 to 5. Kind of caught me off guard a little bit. I know St. Mike's is good, but I thought uh Robert Wesleyan might give him a better game.
SPEAKER_08How about they also put uh a spanking on our team De Uville.
SPEAKER_07St. Mike's is rolling. Yeah, they they they really destroyed Deuville. And not only that, Assumption destroyed Deuville too, 17-1. Hey, Kev, Assumption's 4-0, though. Yeah, we talked about them. They're 4-0 now, man. So how about this? Tiffin pulled a double overtime win over Felician. 5-4 was the score. And you ready for this? Goalie, Nick Greeb for Felician, faced 20 shots and saved 15 of them for 75% in between the cage. And on the other side, goalie Dawson Baker for Tiffin faced 21 shots and saved 17 for 81%. So both goalies were inside. So that was a good, that was quite yeah, that must have been quite the game, actually.
SPEAKER_08You don't usually see a college game end up with that low of a score. But when the goalies are that good.
SPEAKER_07When the defenses are playing good, they they they do, you know. You'll see those scores every once in a while. Hey, Northwind coming off its first win in program history, lost a heartbreak at a Thomas More 12-11. So that's just a couple of things.
SPEAKER_08But they like you said, but their first win ever against William Jewell, and pretty handily, 11-5. So they've got a win under their belt.
SPEAKER_07So that's and they put up 11 goals and almost only lost by one, so they were in that game. So good for them.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I I've got a couple more for you. Um, Mars Hill over Lincoln Memorial, 14-13 in overtime. Mars Hill has up their game this year. But that was a very close match, very close match, and they they win it in overtime. Belmont Abbey beat Florida Southern 10-6. So those are the other two that I had on my list, Danny, as just some notables.
SPEAKER_07Oh, very good, very good.
Week in Reveiw
SPEAKER_08All right, well, let's move on. It's time to shift to talking about a few games we can review. Let me start off with the first game of the Crown Classic. I know you were tailgating, so I'm not sure you got to see any of it.
SPEAKER_07I did not.
SPEAKER_08Tampa against Seton Hill. And like you said in the top 10 roundup, Tampa wins 13-8. Really interesting, Tampa came out fast, Danny, on offense. And Seton Hill, though, their defense was playing pretty aggressive to begin with. And it was fairly tight until there was a one-minute penalty locked in for a hit to the head by a Seton Hill defender. Tampa took advantage and scored twice to go up four to one. And then they follow that up. You know, their their offense is just so lethal. They spin the ball really well. They they just do a great job of finding that open guy sooner or later. They end up going up six to two after one. Not only is their offense impressive, their defense was impressive at the Crown Classic. They had sticks on hands, really bodying players, making it tough for Seton Hill to get any chance at scoring. And that's really how how it went. I will tell you, Seton Hill here's the spoiler alert. The announcers said, the commentators at the end of the game said, I would really like to see this game in another month. These two teams play each other again. Because Seton Hill has some ballers. Yeah. And they played really well. But Tampa has more games under the belt. They're more seasoned.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah. They played that Limestone game, which was, you know, they've been in some big games already.
SPEAKER_08And so that was almost the difference. I mean, Seton Hill was doing well, swarming the ball, winning at the face-off X, but they could not convert to goals. That was the real problem. And then when they got really good looks, Tampa's goalie, Connor Terrier, was making unbelievable saves.
SPEAKER_07Terriel's looking really, really good for the Spartans this year, isn't he?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he really is. He's doing it really good. It was 9-3 at half Tampa. Seton Hill scores the first two in the second half. You're like, okay, can they come back? But look just like we saw sometimes in the limestone game, Tampa comes right back. Davis Lindsay could not be stopped, and he brought it back up to a five-goal difference. And that's really where it was. I mean Seton Hill was battling, but they just could not convert on offense. They just couldn't get enough going. And a lot of that had to do with the Tampa's defense. And Seton Hill's defense was playing really well, too. I mean, it's just that had Tampa just was a little more seasoned, I think, and got away with it. Here's here's some of the the individual stats. For Tampa, Davis Lindsay, three goals, three assists. Jackson Bayshot, three goals, Ryan Kemp, three goals. Zach Friend, he had a day. Two goals, two assists, two ground balls, three cause turnovers. That's a day. And then Stone Conley on defense, five ground balls and one cause turnover. For Seton Hill, yeah. Seton Hill, Way Brunell had three goals. Brain Lockier had two goals and two assists. And then on the defensive side, Justin Dean had four ground balls and one cause turnover. And that really is the game. I'll tell you, Tampa controlled most of the game. Certainly, you know, after that that penalty, and pulled away by enough goals, Seton Hill just couldn't make it up.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. It was a good game. I heard it. I heard it. I heard the cheers from the from the tailgate. But you know, hey, Tampa, they're number one this week. And then and like I said on the last podcast, I felt that they should. So maybe US ILA actually listened to us. You think so? No, no. I don't think so either. I like that.
SPEAKER_08That's the poll that I like. That's the one I will only talk about. Not that the other two polls inside lacrosse and USA Lacrosse magazine aren't good polls and good for the, you know, for the teams to, you know, advertise. But I think USILA is the closest one to reality. I think it's a co pretty sure it's a coach's poll. Yes. I I think that one is is is the one to watch.
SPEAKER_07I I agree with that. I agree with that. So the second part of the Crown Classic or the marquee matchup of the night was uh number three, Lenore Ryan, versus number five Wingate, Kev, South Atlantic Conference foes. They uh these teams know each other, they play each other several times a year sometimes, and um it's always a battle, and this was no different, no different than any other game. Um quite the defensive game, Kev. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08So first of all, this was our game of the week. Just to remind people, this is the one we said to watch, and it did not disappoint. No, I wrote, Danny, this is probably in the first five minutes of the game. I wrote exactly what you said in capital letters. This is a battle, this is a heavyweight bout, and that's what it was throughout. And you said it, it was a defensive struggle. Both teams' defenses played unbelievable.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, they did, and both goalies were insane, too. Yeah, it was a really good game, Kev. You know, it really, really was. It comes down to a couple of things, really. Uh Matt Man uh Mantini at the dot was incredible. I mean, out of 18, he won 12. You know what I mean? He and he got all the big ones, and he made it look easy.
SPEAKER_08He made it look easy, and and what I'll say to that is we talked about this last week that that was probably gonna happen, right? And that the wing gate defense was going to have to step up. And I think they did. When you hold Lenore Ryan to nine goals, and then Quad Williams had some unbelievable saves in that game to really keep them in that.
SPEAKER_07But yeah, he was. He was outstanding.
SPEAKER_08When you've got when you win 66% of the face-offs, you get that on offense, and Lenore Ryan's offense is good. Donnie Powell could not be stopped for a long time. He ended up with six goals. It wasn't until they put Graham Tillett, the LSM, on him, where he he struggled a bit. I mean, he had a goal when he was double teamed and still got it off and scored with a question mark.
SPEAKER_07Donnie Powell's having a year. He's having a great year. He really is. He's just playing well. The ball's coming out of his stick like lightning fast. He's a he's beating his man, you know, a lot of times when he wraps around from X. You know, he's just, you know, they're good. They're just a good squad, man. And uh, they always are, you know. They were last year's runner-up. They didn't go far. But again, I still feel that their defense isn't what it was last year. They're just missing those shorts deep deep. I'm not saying that they're not good because they were great deep. They played really good defense the other night.
SPEAKER_08They played, I wrote it several times, you know, sticks and lanes. How many balls did they knock down before it got to the goalie? Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Coach Paradigne had a good good game plan where he bought the brought the two poles up top.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, you and I talked about the biggest.
SPEAKER_07Put the shorties on the attackman, and they were able to get, you know, muddle up the middle with the sticks, you know.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_07So that two-man game maybe wasn't working as well. But you know what? Wingate had a couple of drops in the crease in the front that's uncharacteristic of the team. You know, uh, there was a couple of turnovers that were uncharacteristic. Uh Joey Moran had an off sides. He I don't think he's had a turnover all year. He had like two. Um, so maybe a little tight, maybe a little whatever it was.
SPEAKER_08But yeah, I I think there was a time in the first where I thought they were playing a little bit tight. Which interesting is my note at the end of the half, it's five four at half. And when it was that score, I'm thinking in my mind, all the way up until like the last five minutes of that half, I'm like, and it was still close. I'm like, Lenore Ryan's way ahead. And then you look at the score, and it's not because then the last five minutes really, I think, when Wingate started to pick up their game on defense and on offense, they come back, Lenore Ryan's scores to begin, they go up six-four, they get another well, actually, their first two goals were on penalties in the second half, and so they're up seven four, and I'm thinking, oh no. But this will tell you how much these teams want to beat each other. Because PayPax scores, and he's and it's seven five, and he's firing up the Bulldogs. And then Joey Moran scores next, and he makes it seven seven six. And I'm thinking, okay, okay. But see, you know what? Lenore Ryan comes back and they score again. It's eight-six after three, and that's about it. But it was this you and I talked about this yesterday when we were talking. The score nine to six is not indicative of how close I think that game actually was.
SPEAKER_07I agree with that. You know what? The um the the Bears scored on three EMOs.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_07They lost by three. You know, it's like, yeah, you know, it's even after that, you know. And again, like you said, I mean, if you look at the the stats, it was 40 shots to 30, LR to Wingate. Um, 12 turnovers for Lenore Ryan, 18, like I said, for Wingate. There was a couple of uncharacteristic, just uncharacteristic stuff, but you know what? A couple of guys were causing turnovers too. Uh LR was 21 for 23 at the clear. Uh, wingate was 25 for 28 at the clear. But the difference is the EMOs. Wingate was zero for two, and the the Bears were three for four. And that's the case.
SPEAKER_08So the other thing is uh with six goals. Yeah. The other thing I'd say is ground balls. LR had 32, the wingate's 18.
SPEAKER_07LR tell you, there was a couple of times where Wingate knocked the balls out of these guys, and LR came up with the ground ball. Yeah. They were just beating, beating the Wingate Bulldogs to ground balls. Yeah. Which is not an easy thing to do. I mean, these guys are gonna see each other again, you know. Yeah. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_08So we just mentioned those two two games. I wrote a note after watching both of those games, and I basically my comment is both of those teams, all four of those teams should be in the NCAAs based on what I saw early on. It's you know, March, but four elite teams played at the Crown Classic. Period. End of story.
SPEAKER_07Kevin, these are like Division I teams in Division II clothing. Did there was a dad, there was a couple of high school dads sitting in front of me with kids, like high school kids like with their club sweaties on hoodies on and stuff like that. And there was a point where like they were commenting on the game as it was going on. And one point they were like, Wow, the Bears defense, they just get every brown ball, every ground ball. And then you hear the one guy say, Wow, that Wingate Bulldog, man, they can move the ball. I mean, there was a couple of times when I mean everybody got touches like twice, you know, just whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, whip. And they were getting shots off. And you know what? It was just a really good game. But let's go over some of the stats. Donnie Powell, my man is having an all-American season right now. Um, six goals. Morgan Mattish, two goals, one assist. Robert Walker with one goal, two assists, Brush Nahan with two assists, and boss had an assist. Cade Marino played really good defense, Kev. Three ground balls, two calls turnovers. And so did Park Spainter. He had three ground balls and three calls turnovers. And for the dogs, uh Kyle Spence with one goal and one assist. And And PayPal, Joey Moran, Zach Sampson, Benny Patrico, each with one. CJ Dore played really, really good. Short stick D mid for had four ground balls and one cause turnover. And the All-American Peyton Farley had three ground balls and one caused turnover. Ram Tillard had four ground balls and one cause turnover. That's right. Yep, yep, you're right. I mean, he's a really good player, man. Yeah. He's a really good player. And you know what? Again, it's just a great game between two great teams that really know each other. These coaches grew up two towns away from each other. Yeah. You know, and now they're down in the Carolinas coaching some of the best teams. But you know, you mentioned these four teams, Kev. These are among the elite teams. Like I swear, when I watch these guys and then I watch some of the other games, they're just not on this level. This level is different. Yeah, the level of athleticism, level of speed on both sides of the ball. And you know, and and talent. Talent. These boys can just flat out play, man. Like these guys are good. They're sprinting and throwing the ball 40 yards on the dime. It's like really it's they're doing like they make it look easy and it's not. These two schools right now. I mean, wow. I think the Chris Schiller did a great job by getting those two, though that those two teams. And it was a great turnout for those both squads. Yeah. Yeah. We'll talk about that in the shout-outs. Yeah, there we go.
SPEAKER_08All right. You also got to see the Frostburg St. A's game. Is that correct?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I'm kind of like shocked at Frostburg a little bit. I don't know. I don't know, man. It was it was a pretty good game for a half. I don't know. I talked kind of hard. Like, I just felt like Bentley had control. You mean St. A's? I mean St. A's had control and Frostburg just, it was 4-3 after one. Okay, we got a game, you know, two good teams. Yeah. It was 7-4, St. A's after two. Ben Turpin had himself a day. Four goals for Ben for St. A's. You know where he's from? Yeah. Where? From Grovelin, Massachusetts, in case you didn't know. Um, it was uh 11-7 was the final. Uh Bentley, uh St. A's, that was their first game of the uh week uh year. Um they're 1-0. Frostburg drops to 0-2 after that loss. And you know, it's just I don't know what to say. I don't know what's going on there. Maybe just maybe there's a couple of injuries maybe going on.
SPEAKER_08I don't know, but I'll tell you, I thought we didn't know what St. A's was going to be like, but we knew they'd be good enough, right? So they'd still be a really good team. And so I'd have to go back and look at the books, you know, past years, Frostburg playing St. A's, who came out on top. But St. A's, I I saw a little of the game when I was in a layover for a flight. I didn't get to see all of it. And I uh I would say the same thing. It was it I watched to the set the end of the first half, and what you saw in that second quarter was Saint Ace just starting to control it.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, exactly. And Quinn Gannon at the dot was really good. He was he was winning most of the he was 11 for 18 at the dot. Um the other guys, they put on the other side, Frostburg uh put two guys at the dot for them. Alex Wallstrom, he was six for ten, not bad, and Greg Dort was three for twelve. I mean, they kind of struggled a little bit at the dot. But um bottom line is St. A's is a good team. We didn't know what they were gonna look like, Kev. They moved the ball well, they played defense, they got some good guys in Quinn Gannon at the dot, and Finn Granara, our man, yeah, in goal. He had nine saves, 56% first game of the year. Ben Turpin, like I said, four goals. Mark Boyle, two goals and assist. Chris Claflin, one goal, two assists. And Mulvey, Lombardi, and Will Andrews each had one. Matt Williams had four ground balls. Um, for the Frostburg State, uh, Sean Molino had three goals and two assists, had a great day. Wesley Phillips, one goal and one assist. Calhoun Long and Henry Sykes each added one. Logan Kobe, 19 saves in the cage for Frostburg, 63%. Yeah. And uh oh, Jay Klopacke on defense, three ground balls, two cost turnovers. So some of their shots, um, 54 uh to 28 in favor of St. A's. Turnovers, 14 for St. A's, 19 for Frostburg, 22 for 25 on the clears for St. A's, 18 for 22 for Frostburg. Uh, ground balls, 28 for St. A's, 21 for Frostburg. Uh, both teams were 0 for 3 at the EMO. And that's it. St. A's goes to 1-0, and Frostburg is 0-2, and they play Malone next. And St. A's plays Bentley next.
SPEAKER_08So yeah, we'll be talking about that in games to watch, but let's there's one more game I think we need to talk about, and that's Mercy against a Delphi. A Delphi pulls this out 15-7. They were playing at Mercy. A Delphi jumped out, Danny, to a four-goal lead. And this was kind of the whole game. Someone like this, right? A Delphi jumps out, four-goal lead, Mercy fights back and scores two, so it's four-two after one. But then again, a Delphi jumps out to an even bigger lead, and Mercy claws back to keep it within five, and it was 11-6 at half. Mercy's D in the third was holding down their own really well. I mean, they were holding uh Adelphi to like almost no no goals until around the five minutes left, four minutes left, and then Adelphi scores three quick goals. And it's 14-6. Uh Mavs score with uh second left and the third to make it 14 to 7. You're trying to- I'm thinking, okay, does that spark the Mavericks? Can they make something happen? No, I mean it's really was stymied in the in the fourth quarter. Uh Adelphi scores one, and that's about it. It's 15 to 7, and that's how it ended.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Yeah. Braden Dunellin. I mean, these guys, they're good, the Delphi. They're good, man. Yeah. Yeah. Dunellen had four goals and four assists, man. He was uh commanding stuff out there. He looked good.
SPEAKER_08Like we've seen with the Delphi before, just a little bit too much firepower for Mercy to handle, especially this year as they've changed over a lot on D and a lot on O.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, but you know, that's you know, a Delphi's just a Delphi, and they're gonna be tough for anybody who comes to play them, and they're gonna they got they got attack men that are good, high IQ and and and ballers and and midfielders for days and great defense and Mr. Dylan Renner in goal. He probably killing people because he let up four in that second quarter. He's probably losing his mind. Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_07You know, so I mean Adelphi is one of the best teams in the country. Again, they just gotta they gotta just up their schedule a little bit. I mean, you play who's on the schedule, right, Kev?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_07You dance, you dance to you dance at the dance with the who you come to the dance with.
SPEAKER_08You know, you know, they we will see. I mean, I think it's a pretty good bet that they're gonna make it to the tournament, NCAA tournament. It'll be interesting to see what they do this year in that versus others that may if they have a tougher schedule or not. You know, I I haven't seen I haven't looked at the schedule enough to compare other North Region teams against them, but that will be that will be something to watch out for.
SPEAKER_07Well, you know, the with the AQ, I mean they they have the head on, you know, they're in the top spot right now, you know. They're tough number what bad. They're number two in the country, they're number two in the country. Yeah. And you know what? And they were picked to win their conference. They were picked to number one in the NE 10, and rightly so. I mean, their defense with Delisandro and just just the Dernan and those guys are just they're tough, you know, Reese Bauer and William Greaves. I mean, you know, yeah, these guys last year they didn't have a face-off. At least Greaves could give them a chance. Yeah. Yeah. Because he was 13 for 21 at the dot. Not too bad. No. So over 50%. McDermott, Balco, Kyle Lewis had one, Noah Gibson had three goals. Nick O'Shea, he's a just a dog. Three ground balls in the game. He's the glue, in my opinion. He does everything. Yeah, you know what? He can just do everything on the on the field. And for mercy, uh, Chris Bergerson had two goals, one assist, A.J. Baron had, hey, was Osario not playing? No. I I can't remember. Yeah, I don't think he did. Babnik, Kunzberger, and Ryan Smith each added one. Kenny Summit was 10 for 20 at the DOT. He had himself a decent day. Owen Stevenson had a good day. Five ground balls and four call calls turnovers for Mercy. And Cameron Dorfman, our man, he's been there for a while now. Uh Dorfman, he's uh 15 saves. Uh 41 shots to 30. A Delphi to Mercy. Uh nine turnovers only for Adelphi, 17 for Mercy. Uh Adelphi perfect, 23 for 23 at the clear. Mercy struggled a little bit. 19 for 24. That's that ride and that defense. Yeah. You know? Uh 33 ground balls for uh the Panthers of Adelphi, 26 for Mercy. Um, three for seven on the extra man for Adelphi, and only one and one for one for Mercy. So Mercy is definitely a team that is probably not what they were last year. They're looking to find a new identity, I think, right now. Yeah, they they are not.
SPEAKER_08You know, in the past years, last two years, we've seen them like the other ones. Elite. They're they were the Cardiac kids, but they were always like in mid-season form, right when right off the bat. And I think they're just kind of still building right now. Yeah, it looks well, they're not building.
SPEAKER_07They have guys there. You know, it's just who are they playing next? They play Florida Tech next. At in Florida, okay. Then St. A's. So, I mean, Florida Tech is two and three, but they're a tough, gritty team. Yeah. And they're big, and they're big boys. So let's see what Mercy can do. We're gonna keep an eye on them, Kev. Right. Anyone who's ever taken a kid to a morning travel game knows how important that travel cup of coffee is. When it's important coffee, no, don't forget how early it is.
Games to Watch this week
SPEAKER_08All right, let's move to games to watch this week, Danny. The first one I talked about, you teased it, where Adelphi going out on out west. On Thursday, March 6th, a Delphi plays Concordia University at Concordia. And that really starts with kind of this mini tournament of RMAC teams playing West Coast teams playing East Coast teams. So CUI then follows up on the 8th of March playing Rollins. So they go back to back. Dominican of California then plays a Delphi on March 8th, and then to finish it off in Irvine, California on the 10th is Rollins against Adelphi.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, that's kind of cool. Got a team from the Northeast and a team from the Southeast both going to the West Coast and playing both those squads.
SPEAKER_08I think that's I love to see that, especially for those Road Warriors, CUI, teams like CMU, you know, Dominican that have to come out east all the time. I'm really glad to see Rollins and Adelphi going out there.
SPEAKER_07Now Rollins has a couple of uh injuries going on. I wonder, I wonder uh how they're gonna how they're going to fare against these teams out there.
SPEAKER_08I talked to uh Coach Lewis when he called to correct me, which I appreciated. I told him that. He told me that they have a few, especially on the defensive side, some injuries. And that's why we got this from uh a dad who DM'd us. They started two freshmen at polls against Flagler. Now, Flagler defense also played well to hold Rollins to only six goals. So we'll have to see how those the defensive players start to gain experience in these games coming up, right? Against CUI, how they fare against Adelphi is gonna be a very, very tough tour.
SPEAKER_07So these boys gonna look like damn, they're wearing black. They're coming into off-field, wearing black, looking like the Raiders, like all badass big boys, defensemen, player of the year, and Dylan Renner and goal, Mr. Plitball. You know, so good luck.
SPEAKER_08Good luck to those boys. Yeah, it'll be it's a fun little thing to see, though, that mini tournament going on in at Irvine. That's cool. Absolutely. All right, what other games are you looking at?
SPEAKER_07I only have a couple of games this week. Everybody's in rock and roll mode. They're all playing each other. Uh NE10 action has started, SAC action has started. Yeah, you know, some of these um other conferences will be beginning, conference play maybe next week or so. We're gonna have some spring breaks. So we're getting a lot of games Wednesdays, Thursdays, Tuesday games. So a lot going on this week. But out of all the games to watch, I really only came up with like four good ones, to be honest. It'd be like that sometime. It'd be like that.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah. There's yeah, there's some other good matchups, but I I'm about the same. I've got about four or five on my list. We just went through that mini tournament, but who else are you looking at?
SPEAKER_07Well, I'm thinking because any 10, you know, that Bentley St. A's game. Yeah. That's a big game. That's a top 10 matchup. That's a big game.
SPEAKER_08Number eight versus number 10. And that's a big game. St. A's at eight. That's a big game. Bentley has looked good. St. A's just one game. St. A's just has one game under the belt.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Can Bentley take him?
SPEAKER_07I think that's going to be a good game. And it's a big game because it's a conference game, you know. And now we're talking about. We're talking about seedings. Now we're talking about shots at AQs. See, we're into it already. It's awesome. I think another one. I want to see Lewis and Westminster. These guys always go at it pretty good.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Westminster did not have a good time on the East Coast in Florida. Can they turn it around? They're a good team. Lewis, though, has been where we thought they would be. They're handling their business.
SPEAKER_07They're handling their business. Nice and quietly. Just like Parisi wants to.
SPEAKER_08He doesn't want any attention. He wants to just wait until tournament time. That's what he wants to wait for.
SPEAKER_07That's exactly right. So I think that'll be a good game. What do you think?
SPEAKER_08I think that's going to be a very good game. I have to give the nod to Lewis. Yeah, me too. But I would not be surprised. That game's on Saturday, the 8th. I would not be surprised if Westminster gives him a game. Me either. How about Bentley St. Ace? Who do you like in that game? I told you, I think it's a pick'em. I don't think I can pick that one. I think right now I only I saw a full game by Bentley. I'm gonna give, if I have to pick, if you're making me pick, I'm gonna say Bentley wins.
SPEAKER_07Okay, I'm gonna go with Bentley. I'm gonna go with Bentley.
SPEAKER_08Here's another game, and I want to see who you think. This is also on Saturday. This is Seton Hill against UIndy. UIndy just lost to Montevallo by one, and that was a strange finish, Danny. What happened was Coach Stocks tried to call a timeout with like a minute left. He didn't have any timeouts left. They had the ball. The ball goes to Montavalo. Montevallo. No. Montevallo does not waste the opportunity and they bury it. And then they run out the clock. Wow. So you know, there's gotta be a bad taste in you and his mouth. They're going up against Seton Hill. That's one and one. Had a tough game against Tampa. What what do you think? Who are you looking liking on this one?
SPEAKER_07Um I'm gonna take Seton Hill in this one.
SPEAKER_08I agree with you. I gotta take Seton Hill.
SPEAKER_07You know, they just came, they just played the number one team in the country and played pretty good.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_07And played pretty good. And and Undy is not as good as Tampa. They're struggling a little bit. They're not what they are. They're pretty decent though, Undy. They're decent.
SPEAKER_08They're 4-2.
SPEAKER_07They're decent.
SPEAKER_08They're a good team. They're a good team. They had a you know Monavalo played them well. Montevallo kept them close.
SPEAKER_07I find you Indy on my uh so I'm gonna see who they played again. Oh, here we go. So they beat Davenport.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_07They lost to Limestone. They beat Newberry 14 to 6 in that crazy game, remember? Yeah. Uh they beat Lake Erie. And they lost to LR and they lost to Montevallo. That's that's three and three, Kev. Yeah, okay. And those three wins, two of them.
unknownI don't think.
SPEAKER_08And they've got another tough one. They've got a tough schedule, and they're playing LR Limestone.
SPEAKER_07And it's at Seaton Hill.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. I gotta give it to Seton Hill.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I think I'm gonna give the nod to Seton Hill this time,
Game of the Week
SPEAKER_07too.
SPEAKER_08As the intro said, it's time for the game of the week. Two knuckleheads. Two knuckleheads. This week, we could have picked St. A's Bentley. That would have been a good one, but we decided to go with one down south. Not that we're biased at all. But it's Flagler against St. Leo. Peach Belt against Sunshine State.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's our game of the week this week, man.
SPEAKER_08Are playing well, but Flagler has had some very impressive wins against teams like Rollins.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Nice win. They dominated that game.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Both are ranked. Flagler actually has to play. They just beat Barton today, right? So they still have to play. So they they beat Rollins and Barton before going To play against St. Leo.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. And St.
SPEAKER_08Leo just pulled one out from UAH, right?
SPEAKER_07Yeah. And they're playing very well. Their defense looks very good. They got a good squad. They got good midfielders. They got a great attack unit. And Flagler, Kev, what can I say? I'm going to pat myself on the back. I knew this team was going to be good. I knew they were going to be so good.
SPEAKER_08But wait a minute. I had them in the top 10.
SPEAKER_07I know. I know you did. I know.
SPEAKER_08Let's just remember that.
SPEAKER_07But you're right. What if I told you right now I predict them to win the beach belt and get an automatic qualifier? Right now. I think I'd be with you on that.
SPEAKER_08The way I've seen the team, like, look who Lander lost to P uh Palm Beach Atlantic. They've had some close games. Monavalo has had some good wins, but I think overall, the teams that Flagler has beat, especially because they run themselves through the Sunshine State Conference, right? And in years past have not won the amount of games they have in the Sunshine State like they have this year.
SPEAKER_07100%. They beat Emory Emory Riddle 13-8. They beat Florida Tech 10-5. They beat Florida Southern 9-8. They beat Westminster 17-10. They just beat Rollins the other night, 13-6. They beat Barton today, 14-8. Their only loss was the second game of the season to number one Tampa. That's pretty damn good resume. And from what I'm seeing in the Peach Belt, although Montevallo won a shocker, I don't know if they're on Flaggler's level. I don't know if the other Peach Belt teams are. We'll have to see. Because I think they're going to be tough right now in the Beach Belt. The way they look to me. I agree. They look strong, they look big, they look confident, they're fast.
SPEAKER_08They're fast. It'll be interesting though. Like, what is St. Leo come next game? How much do they come to battle? And is Flagler is this kind of one of those you know games that they're they're kind of not thinking about as much because they just went Rollins? Are they going to keep stay at that level? It's going to be a good game.
SPEAKER_07Now, I think Flagler has a little bit better of a resume right now than St. Leo. St. Leo beat Montevallo 14-13. They beat Rockhurst 13-12. Rockhurst was ranked at that time. That was a good win. Yeah. And uh they beat CUI 12-6 and they beat Alabama Huntsville. So they're 5-0. So I think that's gonna, I think it's gonna be a really, really, really good game. It's a pick'em game for me. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08I agree. I I just based on who Flagler has played versus who St. Leo has played, I'm gonna give a little slight nod to Flagler in this game. But like I said, you play that kind of record, you may be coming into St. Leo just like you've got to keep your intensity up.
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah. But that's our game of the week, folks. The the Flagler St. Leo game. Flagler's looking good. St. Leo's looking good. I get I like the Bentley St. A's game. I think that's gonna be very good. I think that's a big game. Yeah. I like Seton Hill over you, Indy, and I like Lewis over Westminster. So those are my my picks. I like it.
Player's Spotlight
SPEAKER_07Now it's time for the players.
SPEAKER_08Time for the player spotlight. My favorite part, Kev. My favorite part. You know that. I know, I know. We have what I would call a bonus this week. Four for the price of one. You know, Danny, we've had brothers in the past on this podcast. The Conroy brothers competing at different schools, the Larson brothers together at St. A's. Well, this week we have four brothers all playing for the same D2 school, and they cover every class, seniors, freshmen. There are gonna be Taylors for decades coming out of this school. That's all right. They're with the Malloy Lions, so let's welcome them in. Noah Taylor, Jake Taylor, Owen Taylor, and Liam Taylor. Yeah, boy.
SPEAKER_04Thanks for having us.
SPEAKER_02Thank you. Thank you.
SPEAKER_07Wow. Great to see you guys. Poor Mrs. Taylor. Imagine all the stinky socks that she had to smell. Well, someone knows.
SPEAKER_08Also, what about the lacrosse? What about the lacrosse bags?
SPEAKER_07Well, that's what I'm saying. The stinky socks, the stinky bag. And poor Mr. Taylor, how does he feed all these guys? Imagine the food bill. Oh my lord.
SPEAKER_04A lot of food.
SPEAKER_07Tell us how you guys doing. The Malloy Lions are kicking ass and taking names this year, as I predicted in our Danny and Kevin two knuckleheads top 20. How does it feel to be all together and out of school and you're all playing, you're all getting time, you're all you know, contributing. Contributing. How does it feel to be together like that in that kind of situation? How does it feel? Noah, we'll start with you.
SPEAKER_04I mean, like I said earlier, it's a great opportunity that we have to all be able to be on the same team at the same time. So we've been just trying to make the most out of it and push each other to uh all get better and also you know help out our team as much as we can.
SPEAKER_07And what do you think about that, Owen?
SPEAKER_02It's it's honestly just a great experience to be with my brothers and just show everyone how uh just a couple brothers can just impact the team and help uh just a small team just get better.
SPEAKER_07And Jake, what do you think?
SPEAKER_02I think it's just a blessing. Uh Molly gave us a great opportunity to bring in not just me but Liam at the same year and joining Noah and Owen uh on a great team with a good band of brothers. Uh it's just been a blessing, and can't thank Molly enough.
SPEAKER_07And Liam, what do you think, sir?
SPEAKER_01Uh just a very special opportunity we got here, and just super excited to continue with our season here and improve our right.
SPEAKER_08Okay, Liam, I you're you you're the youngest, right, Liam?
SPEAKER_07And and I heard he's the I heard he was the most talented one. I heard he's got the most talented one.
SPEAKER_08Well, here's the funny thing. I have to know, did they make you play defense so they could have a little uh competition when they all want to play offense? Or I'm surprised you weren't a goalie.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, they usually stick the youngest brother in the goal, you know.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I would I wish I could say that, but no, I switched for myself so I can beat on them.
SPEAKER_08I love it, though. I love it. That's great. You tell them no pads, you guys don't have any knee pads, no elbow pads for you guys when we play in the backyard.
SPEAKER_02I mean, growing up, Liam was like everything. We pond hockey, Liam was the goalie with the pillows on, box across in the driveway. We put on the box pads on him. If we need any any type of grit position, Liam was there and he was ready for it.
SPEAKER_04Taping the pillows on him, that's great.
SPEAKER_08So, Noah, you're the oldest. Did you start playing lacrosse first, and then all your brothers just fell in the line, or how did that work?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so my dad being the coach in lacrosse player he is, he kind of stuck a lacrosse stick in my hand at a very young age, and then it's been the same for all me and my brothers, just playing lacks. It's all we really knew growing up.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, the Sharm Waiting River area is very well known in Long Island for its high-end lacrosse. And um, your dad was a coach, huh? Did he coach those guys as kids? Like PAL type stuff.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so we did we did travel growing up. He was he had his company that he started, uh Havoc, which was what it originally was, and we played with his travel teams and he obviously helped out in PAL, but me and Jacob actually didn't go to Shorem Winning River High School. We went to William Floyd High School, which is basically just the south shore of Shorem. Okay. And that's yeah, that's where we grew up and went to high school. Owen and Lambert the ones who went to Shorem.
SPEAKER_07Oh, okay, okay. Did you guys move or something?
SPEAKER_04Or yeah, yeah, we ended up moving.
SPEAKER_08Oh, that's why on the on on the roster, it gets confusing because two of the tailors are from one place and then two of the tailors are from somewhere else.
SPEAKER_02Exactly.
SPEAKER_08Just trying to keep everyone guessing that you don't want to know, you don't want people to know actually where you you live, right? You otherwise too many autograph seekers from the for the Taylor boys.
SPEAKER_02Just gotta show our roots, you know, where we where we all grew up. Me and Noah Bleed Green, Floyd home and grown. Okay. Coach Magnon over there. I think uh my 2021 senior year was the first time we made playoffs in 13 years at William Floyd. So that was a big that was a big moment for me, at least.
SPEAKER_07Wow. Yeah, it's not easy to get to the high school playoffs on Long Island. Not everybody makes them, so yeah, especially in week one. Yeah, you gotta be pretty good and you gotta have a pretty good resume to get even like thought about getting into the playoffs and stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I think we played that year, we played like three top 20 public schools in the nation with War Melville, Northport, uh Smithtown West slipped in there that year. Huntington. Yeah. Huntington was really good that year.
SPEAKER_07All great programs, all great high school programs for our listeners out there. That's the Long Island Suffolk County public school. They just send so many kids to schools with lacrosse in all three divisions. It's just one of the bigger hotbeds in all of the country. And uh that's where these boys come from, man. They grew up in Lacks.
SPEAKER_08It's funny, Danny, even being from Northern Virginia, all those schools you guys just said, I've heard of, you know, one way or another. Usually my son playing some club lacrosse uh travel game, you know, tournament in the summer, and and those teams are showing up. Jake, I have to ask you, both you and your brother Noah did not start off at Malloy. You started off at Wingate, right? So how did the sequence go? Who went to Malloy first? Was it Owen or Liam or one of you guys transferred? How did this whole thing come about?
SPEAKER_02I'll let Owen take over this. He's the original man of Malloy. Owen, you get too much.
SPEAKER_08Oh, and you pulled him in, didn't you?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I kind of had some uh leeway with the Malloy. Um, so I came here my freshman year, the first semester last year. And Noah, I'm pretty sure he was looking to transfer after the first semester of Wingate for his uh senior year. Yeah. And so I was talking to him about coming here and he was communicating with Tim McCabe, our coach.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02And um I got him to eventually come here for the my second year for uh freshman year. I mean the second semester for my freshman year. And then during the summer, I was talking to Jake because he redshirted last year for Wingate, and I was communicating, he was talking with schools, and I had some just some recruiting skills with Jake convinced him to come to Malloy and showed him like how how special it's gonna become. And with Liam Yeah, so without with his expression here, he um he he was he wasn't really that happy with his uh like rock spot and he wanted he wanted he wanted to let the the the engines turn on and play. And so I I I brought him here during one of our his breaks and he was down from uh uh he was at Brian at the time, so he had his one of his breaks. And um I brought him to one of our like hangouts and we hung out with the guys and he got to meet all the guys. He knows some of the guys from Travel Bowl, and he he just realized that what like a group of guys that are here and just a band of brothers, and then he came down here the next semester.
SPEAKER_08Look out, look at Owen just directing everything, you know, just making it happen. So, Liam, I have to ask you, so you were at Bryant, right? D1 school. Yeah. Danny and I talk about this. I mean, there's there's there's a college program for everyone who wants to continue, whether it's club, D3, D2, D1. What we say a lot of times, and my son, uh, and Danny will say the same thing for his son, like my son had a few D1 looks. He may have gotten on a D1 team, but he probably wasn't gonna play. Whereas he got to go to a D2 school and contribute. Is was that one of the your thoughts, or was it also, I'm sure part of it was the band of brothers at Malloy?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I didn't really expect to play at Bryant like right away, maybe next year. But uh just seeing like the guys there and like my uh size, like the size difference. Uh yeah, I just I was like, wow, maybe I should take my interest somewhere else and like just look around.
SPEAKER_02I mean, you're not a small guy. I mean compared to the Brian three poles, yeah, who I saw in person are all like 6'4, 6'5, Rome, all older men in their 20s. Yeah, yeah, you know.
SPEAKER_08Liam, you'll get there. Trust me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, being in a competitive uh D like D1 school like Brian, Liam just wanted to, I think, have more of an impact. And he didn't realize, I think, that, like I said, it's a competitive school that he wasn't going to be able to right away.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So losing that eligibility, I think, was also a big thing for Liam. And he wanted to be a big factor on a team, and that's what he's doing for Malloy right now is contributing and being a top guy for our team.
SPEAKER_07So you know, sometimes it just isn't for everybody, you know what I mean? Sometimes you get there and you're like, you know, maybe not, you know. And that's that's that's that's what's the good thing about the portal. You know, there's good and bad about the portal, you know that. But the good part is that some guys, like you know, like you, Liam, you get there and you're like, you know what, maybe this ain't this maybe not be for me. And you now you have choices now because you go into the portal, but you get to hang out with all three of your brothers, man. That's like, you know, do you feel like you have to look over your shoulder? Are they watching me, making sure I don't do this or I don't do that?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, I mean, I look over my shoulder every day, especially for this guy. Always might be swinging, throwing a punch in the back of my head because I took the ball away from him or something like that.
SPEAKER_08Oh, okay. So, so then you guys are all playing nice on this podcast, but do you really get along? Noah, do you guys really get along?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we we really do. We all work together. We you know, we we get ourselves like we like to push ourselves to get each other better.
SPEAKER_06Right.
SPEAKER_04I don't think that we ever really get in fights like that or anything like that.
SPEAKER_02I don't remember any fights, to be honest. Well, growing up like that, or see like we're serious fights. Obviously, there's fights like it's brothers, yeah. Brother, brotherly love, but I mean, it's just controlled chaos, as my mom would say. It's very controlled chaos.
SPEAKER_07God bless your mom. Hey, you know what? I have three boys, and growing up, they you know, they would argue that they they would like fight like brothers. There was no punches really thrown or nothing like that, but they get into it, you know. You stole my thing, man. You stole my thing get off my bike, you know, that kind of stuff. But you know what? You wouldn't have gone if you guys didn't get along, you wouldn't all be together. You'd be like, Oh no, I'm not going where Noah is, man. You know, I'm not going where Owen is. I'm I'm gonna go my own spot, but it's obvious you guys all get along. Now, let's talk about lacrosse. Yeah, let's talk about Malloy. Let's talk about Coach Dunn. What do you think about him? Owen, talk to me about Coach Dunn.
SPEAKER_02He's a he's a great coach that pushes you every day during practice. He every every day uh I'm down with the duh the defense helping out with Scout, and he's always critiquing me. And I I just like how he just like tries to make me better as a player. Honestly, he just pushed me and makes me put in as much effort as I can.
SPEAKER_07Jake, what do you think about Coach Dunn?
SPEAKER_02He's a legend. I mean, growing up, my dad coached at Dowling, Dowling College here on Long Island, and uh he coached at NYIT, a very distinguished program that was that was sadly shut down during COVID. But uh blessing for us at Mole because he's uh as I said, a legend of a coach. He pushes everyone, he wants you to hustle. His his motto is just hustle. That's the only thing you keep you can control, is hustle. Everything else will fall in play after that. And uh, I'm so thankful for Coach Dunn because he got me out of a situation where uh I wasn't so happy, and now I'm loving the cross again, and it's been amazing.
SPEAKER_07Oh, that's a great answer. And Liam, you're you know, freshman. Now you're with Malloy, and what do you think of Coach Dunn? You getting you like you like everything that's going on with so far? You loving everything, or what?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, my short time here, so but uh yeah, I'm loving it so far. Coach Dunn has really pushed me every day and making sure I'm doing the right thing, make a little mistake, big mistake, he's always on me, so yeah.
SPEAKER_07To be coached by a guy like that, I think has kind of got to be special, you know. I mean, the man is a legend, got multiple national championships and you know, multiple all-Americans have played for him over the years, and just you know, the man's the man's pedigree speaks for itself. I mean, I think to play for a guy like that, that must be just unbelievable. You know, I just I think it's a one of a one in a million opportunity.
SPEAKER_08When you said legend, and we've called him a legend on this podcast, and we've had him on a couple times. If you when you guys look back at your college career, you will be able to say that you were coached by one of the best coaches ever in D2. Noah, you're the senior guy. What has it been like for you and and uh with Coach Dunn and and what kind of leadership position are you taking on Malloy?
SPEAKER_04Well, I think that calling him a legend is definitely what he is. He we're really lucky that we have someone as knowledgeable in the game of lacrosse as he is. And having been in plenty of different positions with different teams, I think that that knowledge that he brings to us, and especially with the talent that we have now is very important. Uh I my time at Malloy with him has been uh I mean, I've loved it. It's been the second home for me. I think that, like my brothers have said, having that brotherhood with the team and having our coaching staff behind us has been a huge role, and I think our success and all of us finding a love for the game again.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, now going on going into this season, what was the expectations of the team coming into the season? Because you guys sit at four and one right now. You're looking really good. The only loss was a two-goal loss to number six pace, which I watched the game. Phenomenal game. It was a really, really, really good game. Very defensive-oriented type of game, low-scoring kind of game. But what was the expectations of the team going into this year? I want to start with you.
SPEAKER_02Um, I'm gonna be honest, we want we want that uh conference championship. Like we want it bad, and we're we're trying to show that the whole country and every D2 school, we want the conference, we want the bid. To go to the tournament. We want to show we don't want to like mark our spot in D2 across.
SPEAKER_07Right.
SPEAKER_02That's that's mostly what Yeah.
SPEAKER_08So was the AQ Owen? I mean, no one was the AQ kind of an extra incentive for you guys that's come this year, do you think?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think for sure. Uh last year being my first semester in the spring with Malloy, we made it to uh the conference uh semifinals and we got a taste of what it could be like. And I think that our really our whole foundation of our team changed this year, and we really were able to see that in the fall with a lot of uh different transfers and also freshmen that came on to the team, and we really were able to see and realize that wow, we have a pretty strong team, especially compared to where we were last year. And being at the semis and thinking that now we have a better team has helped to like make people realize that if we keep working really hard, then we can get somewhere far and uh be at a new spot that this school's never been at before.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, and you know what? I really think that you have a really good chance at that at that AQ and that ECC conference championship. I just think if you guys keep playing the way you're playing and play hard and good things to come. I mean, I just I just knew that this was gonna be a good year for Malloy. I just knew it. I saw the package that he had, I saw what he's been doing over the last couple of years. I love the way Thomas Kopod plays. I think that man is sick. He's a dog.
SPEAKER_08He is he is uh a magnet. That ball is a magnet to me.
SPEAKER_07He's a natural, like he's a natural at it. You know, you just watch his footwork. I'm like, oh my god, this kid, he's not the biggest guy, but man, stick, click, bang, ball down, gone.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, just an animal, an animal on the field. So my nickname for him is uh I like to call him Mitch Marner because he just has the vision of I mean, I'm comparing to a hockey player, but he just has that vision and sees the field and is able to get that check off that people don't think that you know or don't expect is gonna happen. I mean, this past game this past weekend he had five assists as an LSM.
SPEAKER_07That's amazing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_07That's insane. Yeah, and you got big Luke Hacum coming to you now, the the big lefty. Like he's a he's a he's a handful to say the least, you know.
SPEAKER_02Love Luke, yeah.
SPEAKER_07And he is not afraid to let it go. No, shooter shooter's got a shot.
SPEAKER_08Hey, he was not afraid. Let me Jake, let me ask you this. With that expectation that you guys have had coming into the season, how do you look? Do you is it game by game and you're just setting up because you've got a you've got a good schedule in front of you still, but how do you guys look at that prepare?
SPEAKER_02I'll take a quote from my captain Christian Michaels, our goalie. Every every day is zero zero. Everything is from the beginning. You play it game by game, score by score. Every quarter is a new quarter. I mean, every single thing is a battle that you have to win. At the end of the year will be the war. We'll find out what the result of the war is, but every battle has to be fought first.
SPEAKER_08Very interesting card from Christian, man. Yeah, I love it. Well, I have to say this, Danny. They've had some pretty damn good answers so far. Yeah, excellent. Do you think they're ready for the firing round?
SPEAKER_07I think they are.
SPEAKER_02Oh, we heard about the firehouse.
SPEAKER_07All right, all right, boys. We we got the Taylor boys from Lloyd University. There are so many of them. Poor, poor Mrs. Taylor, have to smell all them stinky socks for all them years. But anyway, I'm gonna ask you guys a couple of questions, and I'm gonna start with you, Owen. Ready? Here we go. Mom's best meal.
SPEAKER_02Um lasagna is really good.
SPEAKER_07Okay, what about you, Noah? What do you think?
SPEAKER_03Chicken farm.
SPEAKER_07Chicken palm. Liam, what it what about you? What's mom's favorite meal?
SPEAKER_01Ooh, so many. Uh I'll just go with the chicken palm.
SPEAKER_07Chicken palm and Jake?
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go with the barbecue ribs. They make some good ribs, I'll tell you that.
SPEAKER_07Moms make some good ribs, huh? All right, cool. So, mom, you got two, two, and one. So you're gonna have to mix it up a little bit more, Ma. Okay. Next question. Boys, Xbox or PlayStation? Owen.
SPEAKER_02PlayStation.
SPEAKER_01Noah, PlayStation, Jake, PlayStation, William. PlayStation. Oh, I thought you were gonna say the Xbox.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Here we go. Owen, runs or lifts? Runs. Noah.
SPEAKER_03Runs.
SPEAKER_06Runs. Why is Owen laughing so much?
SPEAKER_02Because it's recovery. Because he's full of shit. Because he's full of shit, right? Noah's more the recovery. Noah's more on the bike.
SPEAKER_08Noah's Noah's more the yoga guy. Is that what's more?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we did love our yoga. Shout out.
SPEAKER_06Jake runs a lifts.
SPEAKER_02I'ma go with the lifts. The energy. I love the energy in the lifting room. We got a gritty. If you ever go to the Mole lifting room, it's gritty, isn't it? It's gritty in there.
SPEAKER_07And Liam, you're a lift guy too?
SPEAKER_02I'm a lift guy.
SPEAKER_07Okay. Oh, and next question. Early bird or night owl?
SPEAKER_02Um, definitely early bird. Every practice at 6 30.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I've driven by there and seen you guys. And then I've driven by in the afternoon and seen you guys there too. So, Noah, what about you? Early bird or night owl?
SPEAKER_01Early bird.
SPEAKER_07Liam.
SPEAKER_02I'll go early early bird.
SPEAKER_07Early bird. And Jake?
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna have to go early, bird. Those those that hour commute in the morning at five o'clock in the morning, you gotta be up at 4 40. So okay. Or the Taylor bus leaves.
SPEAKER_08That's Taylor conditioning right there. Okay. Don't let them fool you.
SPEAKER_04Don't let them fool you. They sleep the whole way I drive.
SPEAKER_07I bet. I'm definitely sure of that. So since you guys are all early birds, Owen, what's your go-to breakfast meal?
SPEAKER_02Um, usually right now it's just been granola bars.
SPEAKER_07Okay. Okay, what about you, Noah?
SPEAKER_04Our local deli, Wildcat Deli. We're there every day. Shout out Wildcat. Shout out Wildcat. French toast bagel with some home fries.
SPEAKER_07Oh, okay. What about you, Jake?
SPEAKER_02Uh, shout out Wildcat. I get my uh bacon, egg, and cheese.
SPEAKER_07There you go.
SPEAKER_02Salt pepper ketchup with the hatch down inside. Oh, all right. On a roll, on a roll.
SPEAKER_07He's going the old New York special, Kev, the old bacon, egg, and cheese with the SPK. And he's even adding some potatoes in there. What about you, Liam? What's your uh go-to breakfast meal?
SPEAKER_01Shout out, Wildcat. I usually get it.
SPEAKER_08We need to be a sponsor now of In the Craig.
SPEAKER_02They are that's like those are our people over there. Yeah, guy.
SPEAKER_07You're gonna have to tell him about the podcast and have you guys all shouting them up.
SPEAKER_04He he honestly, I think he knows he obviously knows about the podcast. Yeah, he's a big lacrosse guy. His son, Jaden Galfano, is a freshman goalie at Fairfield.
SPEAKER_07Okay, nice, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Very uh very good Shorm talent.
SPEAKER_07Okay, here we go. Next question. Uh ESPN or Netflix?
SPEAKER_02Um I I do like sometimes my my my roommates we just go on ESPN and just wat like literally find any random sport and we'll just watch that and just put on the TV and just talk. Okay. I'll pick ESPN.
SPEAKER_07Okay, what about you, Noah? ESPN or Netflix?
SPEAKER_04ESPN, big sports guy. We love to watch the Maple Leafs.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Okay, wow, that's interesting. Jake, what about you? ESPN, Netflix?
SPEAKER_02Definitely ESPN. Uh ESPN or YouTube, big YouTube guy. Love the lacrosse highlight mixes. Uh love everything that has to do with sports, so definitely not Netflix anymore.
SPEAKER_07And you, Liam? ESPN. All right, here we go. All right. Owen, favorite sport outside of lax?
SPEAKER_02Definitely hockey.
SPEAKER_08Hockey. Noah, what about you?
SPEAKER_02Hockey.
SPEAKER_08I think we're seeing another tailored trend here. Let's see. And Jake?
SPEAKER_02You know, I'm gonna switch it up. I've gotten into it lately. I love watching golf. It's just something relaxing. There you go. Sit down and watch golf. It had to be different.
SPEAKER_07There you go. Liam, the youngest, is giving the most shit, right? What about you? Favorite sport outside of lax, Liam.
SPEAKER_01100% hockey.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Low hockey.
SPEAKER_02Go leaves. Goal leaves go. Yeah, go leaves.
SPEAKER_07How did you guys how come you guys aren't Islanders fans?
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, definitely not. How did you be our dad's from Toronto?
SPEAKER_04Toronto. So yeah, he grew up there and came down to the States for uh college at Dowling, where he ended up coaching.
SPEAKER_07That's interesting, man. That's so interesting. So, Owen, let me ask you, are you the kind of guy that does things right away, or do you procrastinate a little?
SPEAKER_02Definitely procrastinate a little bit.
SPEAKER_07And Noah, what about you?
SPEAKER_02Right away, or I'm a procrastinator. Procrastinator. Sure.
SPEAKER_06And what about you, Jake?
SPEAKER_02I get it done. You know, I'm a guy who just gets it done. Has to be different. You get it done too, though.
SPEAKER_01I'm a procrastinator. I thought you were a good guy.
unknownI thought you were with this.
SPEAKER_07Folks, folks, for the folks that are listening, these guys are having a good time with each other tonight, right now. There's smiles, all four of them from ear to ear. It's awesome. Okay. Owen, what's your favorite class at Malloy? Um You better come up with something, Sean.
SPEAKER_02What about last semester, Owen? Right now, I think it's um critical thinking.
SPEAKER_07Because that's that sounds like a fun class, actually.
SPEAKER_08Here's a course called Critical Thinking, and Owen's having trouble coming up with an answer. That's what I was thinking.
SPEAKER_03I had to I had to think critical.
SPEAKER_08I just think that's good, Owen. You gotta give yourself a pause, think about it, come up with the answer. That's good. I love it.
SPEAKER_07I'm a good teacher, I'm a good teacher. Well, what about you? What's your favorite class?
SPEAKER_04I actually switched majors when I came here to Malloy. I was an educational major and now I'm in uh criminal justice. So I am uh enjoying a criminal profiling class I'm in.
SPEAKER_07What about you, Jake?
SPEAKER_02You know, I got a lot of education classes right now, so it's a little hard to choose, but I'm gonna go with my uh my major history right now. I'm in uh study of Africa and I'm enjoying study in Africa.
SPEAKER_07Okay, interesting. And what about you, Liam?
SPEAKER_01Well, since I'm uh I think I'm the only business major in our family, so I'm enjoying some macroeconomics. Professor Kent, shout out him. Yeah, great guy.
SPEAKER_07He's kissing butt for that A, is what he's doing right there. That's great.
SPEAKER_08He's he's working the demand and supply curves right now, a little supply-side economics, trying to put put it under his professor.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, okay. Here's a good one. Hey, Owen, outside of your dad, give us one person that really helped you on your lacrosse journey.
SPEAKER_02Um definitely Coach Megna from Floyd. He he just uh he just pushed me as a player uh when I was at Floyd um during that time. He just pushed me as a player and made me learn a lot of things.
SPEAKER_07What about you, Noah?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I have to agree. Coach Megna was my uh one of my coaches growing up my whole life, so he definitely had a huge impact.
SPEAKER_07And Jake?
SPEAKER_02I would like to say uh Coach Megna, but every coach. But every coach at Floyd was great. Uh Coach Miller, Coach Lalo, they all shaped who I was. Uh I started playing varsity in eighth grade. So it was just a great time growing up with those uh gentlemen that really raised me to be who I am now.
SPEAKER_07Varsity in eighth grade. Hmm, interesting. Small out there, right? Compared to this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was probably 130 pounds soaking wet in eighth grade, and all I did was go on go in on a man up and play the point.
SPEAKER_07Because they they they brought my son Joe up in eighth grade, and he just wasn't ready for that. I was just like, what are these guys doing?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I just pra I really was just a practice guy and a man up guy. I had every man up, I would go to Coach Megna uh after practices, hang out, and we'd go over man up, and that's where he really like developed me learning and seeing the game as a as a point guy.
SPEAKER_07Cool. And Liam, what about you? Who which guy has given you some mentorship as you in on your relaxed journey?
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna go with my uh one of my travel coaches, uh Coach Piz. Uh, he really brought the beast, he calls me. So he really brought it out of me and really taught me a lot of fundamentals and where I would I don't think I would be where I'm at today without him. Shout out, Piz. Shout out Pizz.
SPEAKER_07Hey Jake, I'm gonna ask Jake this question. Uh who's the funniest kid on the team?
SPEAKER_02Oh, the funniest kid on the team. You know, this was my old bus buddy, but since he's a freshman, he got kicked out of the back, and I miss him. I miss him deeply. He's my guy. I'm going with Matt Calvo from uh MacArthur, freshman. Matt Calvo. D Middy.
SPEAKER_07He's a D MIDI, and he's the funniest kid on the team. What makes him so funny?
SPEAKER_02He's the funniest kid. He trolls everybody. He he doesn't care who you are on the team, he doesn't care how you act, he will troll you in the way that gets you the most. And and that's what I love about him.
SPEAKER_07That's that's great. I love it. Owen, I'm gonna ask you this one. Who's the one kid on the team that you would never let date your sister if you had one?
SPEAKER_02Um so uh I would like I would like to say um probably um I would say James Cornelius.
SPEAKER_08Look at these guys laugh. All of them are almost on the ground laughing.
SPEAKER_02I don't even want he's my roommate, uh lives right next to me, and uh he's a freshman. Uh dirtiest room I've ever seen in my life. And straight soda. Straight soda.
SPEAKER_07Okay. Noah, I'm gonna ask you this question. What's the one thing that not many people know about you?
SPEAKER_04Uh I can give one. Uh I've growing up I played the trumpet.
SPEAKER_00There you go.
SPEAKER_04I actually disliked it because I would have so many lessons that my mom would bring me to to do. And it was like one of those things where I was cursed at being good at with it. I was all county, I was all state, but I just did not enjoy playing it at all.
SPEAKER_07Do you pick up the horn at all every once in a while? No.
SPEAKER_08No, okay. All right. Hey, Noah, that was the same thing with my son Ronan. He was gifted with being able to play the double bass really well.
SPEAKER_04And yep, I know that. All right, I can remember that.
SPEAKER_07This is a question for all four of you. Owen, give me this one thing on your bucket list.
SPEAKER_02Probably like I one thing is I want to be a uh uh lacrosse coach.
SPEAKER_07That's one of my that's great. That's awesome. What about you, Noah? One thing on your bucket list.
SPEAKER_04Uh to be honest, to win a playoff game my whole life. I've went uh I know at Wingate, I uh we made through playoffs and have done well, but to be able to contribute in a playoff game is on my bucket list.
SPEAKER_07Excellent answer. Love it. And Jake, what about you? One thing on your bucket list.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say graduate with a ring. I mean, every year I was at Wingate, it was like we were one step away from doing it. Every year, one step away. Yeah, and just to get a ring would be like the blessing of a year.
SPEAKER_07And Liam, what's one thing on your bucket list? You probably got a boatload of shit on your bucket list. Like, I'm gonna do this and I want to do that.
SPEAKER_01I would say something similar to like get a ring, like especially in high school. I was trying to get a ring, uh especially my uh senior year. I thought we were gonna go all the way, but we came we came short against Bayport, lost in like the last minute, nine-eight. So definitely hopefully we get it this year, maybe, maybe not. We'll see.
SPEAKER_07No, it's it's tough when you get that when you smell it, when you're so close you can smell it, and you come up short. It's tough. And that's what brings out, I think, the the the the competitor in you. Like, hey, this is what we gotta do next year. We gotta do this, this, and this, and we can get there. That's an excellent. All right. One of you guys get to pick. One of you guys has to give me your best impression of Coach Dunn.
SPEAKER_03Gotta go be owen.
SPEAKER_08Oh, and you brought everyone over tomorrow. You gotta do it.
SPEAKER_03He's good. I don't, I don't know what to say. Uh get Dennigan in here. Get Dennigan. I don't know if he's here. I can play that doesn't matter so good. His roommates actually uh so good.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, he does a good impression of Coach Duncan.
SPEAKER_02Forced principal talent, that's what he chose. And shout out Aiden Dennigan because Aiden Dennigan's been a starter this whole year, and he's been locking down some big guys with big transfers uh from other schools that came and played. Like I remember uh just the whole defense has been locked down, including Christian Michaels, Sean McCabe, uh Thomas Kofod, yeah, Jade McLeod, all have been locked down defenders this year, and I'm grateful for them.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, your defense has been playing very well. So where is Ben again?
SPEAKER_08Is he is he around him or are you sadly?
SPEAKER_02Sadly, I think he is in class right now. Oh boy. All right, it's up to you, Owen. Gotta step up. I gotta step up on him.
SPEAKER_07Ladies and gentlemen, now then now doing a build on question is Owen Taylor.
SPEAKER_08Um he's thinking critically right now. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Owen, pretend pretend you're yelling at Noah for not getting the ground ball because he was being lazy. Well, what do you what are you doing, Noah? What are you doing? You gotta put your ass on the line and get the ground ball, Noah.
SPEAKER_07All right, we like it.
SPEAKER_08So, ladies and gentlemen, that took us that took us 20 minutes to get to, but it was worth it.
SPEAKER_07That was the firing round with the Taylor brothers. That might have been the best one yet, man. Hey guys, you're really balling out. We really appreciate you guys taking the time to come out with us. Uh, and Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, we really thank you for having so many kids. Um give us a good podcast tonight. And you know what? It's interesting that all four of you are at the same school. I mean, not a lot of guys who do that. Brothers usually tend to like want to split up from each other and do their own thing, but you guys are sticking together. You're your own band of brothers with your other band of brothers. You guys are on your own, and all of you are contributing and playing well. And I I just wish you the best of luck for the rest of the year. I I've been watching Malloy basically since Coach got there. I just keep watching him. And I've been to a I went to a Malloy women's game last year. It was the first women's game I've ever been to. A girl I grew up with in my neighborhood, her daughter's on the team. So I went out there and watched my first women's game, and I was like, all right, Malloy Lions. It was pretty cool. I really enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_02UN RBC?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, love RBC, Iraq, great place.
SPEAKER_07I I live not too far from there. I'm like a 15-minute drive.
SPEAKER_02So you'd love to have you for a game.
SPEAKER_07I'll probably come. No, I'll probably come when the weather gets a little nicer. I'm not gonna go. It's been brick out there lately, man.
SPEAKER_02It's been brilliant.
SPEAKER_07So it was cold again today here. But um, I'll definitely make a game. And when I do, I'll say hello to you guys. I'll come up to you guys and we'll talk. But ladies and gentlemen, how about it for the Taylor boys? Were they great guests? We love them having them on, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Thank you guys for having us. We appreciate it. We appreciate it.
SHout outs
SPEAKER_08How about those Taylor boys, Danny?
SPEAKER_07They're hysterical. They were great. I love them. Could you imagine his mom? I'm just their mom.
SPEAKER_08You know what's funny is if we had a if we did a YouTube channel, this is like to be the one to really show because they're the way they were laughing and joking and amongst them, and they're all in different rooms except for two of them are together.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_08It was pretty funny watching them look at each other on screen, going back and forth. It was a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_07Calling each other out. Liam and Jake were funny. Liam's a pisser, huh?
SPEAKER_08He's the he's gotta be as the youngest.
SPEAKER_07He's the baby, you know. Like they beat him up, they put the pillows on him, you know, and then now he's kicking all their asses. Yeah, he's probably the best one out of all of them. He's pretty good. So you know what? What a great family. What a great thing. Imagine being a parent. Just hey, my kid plays varsity at such and such a high school. Oh, wow, great. You know what? My kid plays college lacrosse. Wow, that's awesome. All four of my boys play college lacrosse. How blessed can you be, you know?
SPEAKER_08To have all talk about easy for the parents.
SPEAKER_07They don't have to split up and go to different games. And if they all got a little bit of scholarship money, which I'm sure they did, they loving Coach Dunn, right? That's right. Saving them, saving them tens of thousands of dollars. That's so funny, yeah. Yeah. But that's that's great. What a great family. Awesome stories. It's cool. I I don't think I've ever knew four brothers on a team before. I'm just trying to think. I know the Kavanaughs were three. I know at that at Notre Dame.
SPEAKER_08Um and then you got the uh the Curse, so but only a couple at there's three.
SPEAKER_07Three Cursed, right?
SPEAKER_08There's four, but they didn't all go to the same school. A couple were at Butgers together, and that's it.
SPEAKER_07So Right, right. And then we got triplets at Bridgeport and the Napoli boys, the triplets, which is pretty interesting. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08You know, and uh they're gonna be calling us to get on.
SPEAKER_07It's that's pretty cool, man. I think I just I had a good time with the Taylor boys. They're good kids, man. Uh mom and dad Taylor, you did a good job. Okay. Time for shout-outs. Do you have any? I do. I have I want to shout out the Flagler Saints. You guys have been falling out.
SPEAKER_08That's two two weeks in a row.
SPEAKER_07You're making me look good, man. I'm just making you're making me look good. Yeah, shout out to those boys. Hey, and a shout out to Chris Schiller and all the things that he does for that that that tournament. That the crown classic, it was great. Kev, we were right next to the Davidson girls. So when the Davidson girls came out, it was a massive crew between the Wingate crew and the Davidson crew. And the Davidson girls had awesome uniforms, man. Those uniforms were killer. But here's the funny part: pull into the parking lot, the only spots close open were next to LR. Oh, that's funny. I get out with my wingate swag, and they're like, They pull me right over. Donnie Powell, Mr. Powell brings me right over. Hanging out with the LR people like we did on championships, on championship day. They were in rare form, they were ready to go. They always are. The Aguilars were there, even though Tommy has graduated already, but they were there. They're originally from Staten Island in New York here. Yeah. So I was hanging out with them. I met Mattish's dad. I met Brushna Hand's dad. Brushing the hand's dad has been hitting the weights a little bit, Kev. Hard. Hard. This man was very dog. He was cool. We were talking for about 20 minutes. I was at the Lenore Ryan Tailgate probably for a half hour before I made it over to the Wingate Tailgate. And shout out to shout out to the Wingate people because that was probably the largest tailgate I've been a part of since I've been a part of Wingate. And that goes back to a while now. And uh there was a lot of people there. The alumni came from like a lot of different eras. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. There was like a lot of different eras in there. And it was just, it was just a great day. And I just think I think what Schiller does with the uh with the Crown Classic is just really, really good. It was just beautiful. 74, but it got cold at night, man. It was halftime of the Wingate game, uh Lenore Ryan game, and I was like, oof, I should have worn my sweatshirt. Yeah. It was getting cold. It dropped pretty quick. But street weekend, street weekend. Shout out to all the boys. Okay. I've got a few shout outs too.
SPEAKER_08All right, here are my shout-outs. First to Barton Goalie, Nate Lair. He hit 500 saves in his career against Cataw last week. I didn't say it last week because I had that special one about uh from the Lewis uh team impact player. So I I but I did want to shout that out. I think that's pretty cool. Second shout out. I'm in Hawaii, so I have a shout-out to the Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association. We're gonna watch one of their practices later today. Really excited to see them. They do a good job of spreading the, you know, growing the game here in Hawaii. Even though they're small, they're mighty. And then my final shout out, Danny, is once again to our sponsors. This costs us money to do this. This isn't free. It's Zoom subscriptions, it's subscriptions to watch games, it's a Bud Sprout subscription. There's a lot of things that go on that people don't realize that we do. We do it out of love, but these sponsors help us defray some of those costs. So please, if they're supporting us, please support them. Remember, the D2 showcase. If you have any high school players looking to get exposure, especially juniors, they should go to the D2 showcase. And then Shag Coffey's Shag Coffee lids and cups. It's a like we always said, Danny, we don't just anyone off the street, we don't just have them come in and we s there as our sponsor. We've got to believe in their product. This is a great product. Please go to their website, look at it, buy a lid, buy a cup, and sponsor them as well. All right, Danny, for this week. Until next week, that's a wrap. That's a wrap, Kevin.
