Well, it's starting to warm up here. We always seem to talk about the weather. I've talked to other podcasts talking about food. We seem to talk about the weather. It's starting to warm up, which is nice for me.

You know why we talk about the weather? Because we're old. We're in the way. And the weather is very important to old bones like ours. You know what I mean? Yeah. When it warms up, we feel so much better.

So it's kind of like a warm day here in New York City today. It was like in the mid-50s, very spring like. I went outside.

And I had lunch on a bench underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Something different. You know, something different. Watching the pigeons come by and beg for food.

I had lunch in front of my computer screen. So that stinks. Yeah. I do almost every day. Aw you got to get out. Well, I do. I I also today I went for a run earlier before I had lunch. So there you go. I get I did get out. Okay. Okay. Go to exercise, Danny. Go use that dad bot, which isn't going to happen anymore.

Oh, Kev, another good week in Division II, maybe even a couple of upsets this week. And this is your week five, top ten roundup. Number one, Tampa beat number seven, Maryville, nine to six in a tight contest.

Tampa goes to eight and oh and faces UND next. Tampa looks very, very, very, very, very good. Number two, Adelphi.

But before you go though, Maryville hung with them for a while. Yeah. That was a close game until the end. And once again, Tampa just has enough to just enough depth, just enough firepower to seal the deal.

Boy, oh boy, they had some weekend out on the West Coast. I bet you some of these guys on this team probably never got out of Nassau County. Now they're on the West Coast and enjoying. Yeah, I know, right? Adelphi beat Dominica to California 24-7. They beat a bunch of guys. They beat Rollins out there. It was just a great weekend for Adelphi. If you're a Panther, you had some weekend. Panthers go to 5-0. And let's see, number three, Lenore Ryan. Upset. Lost to unranked Anderson 15 to 9. Yeah. LR goes, drops to 5-1. And guess what? They face Limestone next.

Number four, Limestone beat LMU 19-7. Face Lenore Ryan next. Number five, Pace. Beat Chestnut Hill in a kind of an interesting game. 10-5. The Setters go to 4-0 and they face undefeated Assumption next, Kev. That should be a little bit of a game, I think. Number six, Wingate beat Mars Hill rather handily, 23-7. 5-1 go to the Wingate Bulldogs, and they face Tusculum next. Number 7, Meryville lost to Tampa. They go to 4-2, and they play St. Leo during the week before this podcast drops. And I'm telling you. Yeah, I think that's going to be a good game, actually. Number eight, St. A's beat number 10, Bentley, 10-6. That score really doesn't show the game. And they face Mercy next St. A's, so that should be a good one. Number nine, Seton Hill beat number 16, U Indy. Guess what? 15 to 5. Held the Greyhounds to five goals. The Griffiths go to 4-1, and they face Thomas More next. And number 10, Bentley lost to number 8, St. A's. Bentley goes to 2-1, and they face Franklin Pierce next. And that's your couple of quick scores to note. Frostburg over Wheeling in a close one, 9-7. Frostburg State goes to 2-2. Quincy over William Jewell in a tight one. 9-6, Quincy won. Assumption over Georgian Court in another tight one, 8-6. And plus, like I just mentioned, Assumption is undefeated at 5-0. And how about CUI over Rollins in overtime? Beat him 12-11. Rollins drops to 3-3, man. So those are just a couple of quick scores to note.

I've got one other, and that's young Harris over Barton 15-14. We said to watch out for Young Harris this year, or at least I thought about it. Now they haven't always lived up to that, but they're starting to, you know, they're doing better than they did the past year, so that's good to see. The other thing I just want to talk about quickly is that Anderson, Lenore Ryan game. I tuned in at like second half because I saw the score was 8-6 at half. Anderson, and I thought, geez, is this going to be like the the Rollins game against uh Lenore Ryan when they were up by a couple and then Lenore Ryan came. I was waiting for Lenore Ryan to come back.

Yeah, they just didn't, it wasn't their day. It wasn't Lenore Ryan's day.

Anderson outscored them six to two in the third. They got the score differential up to five. And I'll tell you, they are de their defense played well.

Soft guy, what's his name? He's pretty good, man. He was doing good against uh Mr. uh Mancini.

Yeah, well, and guess what? Mancini was under 50% in face-offs. Yeah, I'm wondering if he's a little banged up. I I have seen Anderson's face-off duo in other games. They're very good. Uh still surprising to see that. I would have thought it would have been Mancini would still be above 50%, but they're pretty darn good. And they got better as the game went on.

Yeah, they were able to get like they were moving the ball pretty well. They were able, they were doing, they were getting out in transition and getting some unsettled goals. They had like wide open goals. Um just it wasn't LR's day, man. They just couldn't do things offensively, really. They struggled a little bit. Um defensively, they struggled a little bit, and they pulled uh the the the goalie again after the three and put in Owen Peters again. So I don't know.

It's just but that's not it was not their day, but you gotta give credit to Anderson. Oh yeah. So just really, really, really a wild game to watch. I I was I was I kept on waiting for Lenore Ryan to come back, and Anderson just would not let them.

Yeah, their de their defense played good. I mean, like again, they were winning faceoffs, they were 50-50 pretty much at the face-offs. And uh, you know, that's huge uh against LR. If you can get possessions and and hold on to the ball and keep their offense off the field, that's a big thing. You know, but I look at those two games. I like when LR played Wingate, they played very, very well. And I don't just think LR played that well. They didn't look like the same team that played Wingate.

Yeah, I'd agree with you there. I would agree with you there. Was it a trap game?

Hmm, very interesting. It could have been, you know what? Maybe they're looking past Anderson.

And Anderson certainly was not gonna look past them.

No, Coach Mitchell's a good coach, and he's you know, he's put good teams out before. And yeah, they've had some like real all-Americans at face-off that were able to get them possessions in past years, and then they struggled a little bit, maybe perhaps a little bit last year, maybe under the radar this year. You know what I mean? So that we really haven't spoken about Anderson that much, but again, Coach Mitchell does a really good job there. He gets players there, you know. Like Raiden Badron can play, you know what I mean? Right. You know, Matty Matty Boy can play. These guys can play at Anderson.

I think when we did the sack preview, we the thing that I was curious about was how their defense was going to look because they lost some key players there. Not that they didn't lose a few on offense, but they had guys like Raiden Badron coming back and and Matt Rogers and others that you had played for several years on offense. But like I said, their defense played really well. We were we were wondering about faceoff, their face-off unit. Like you talk about uh Wingate being LSMU. I almost feel like Anderson is face-off unit.

Yeah, yeah, they put out good face-offs and have for a while.

You know, they have multitudes that can come out and and and and get possessions for him. So that could have been a trap game. That could have been a trap game for LR, yeah.

But so it's almost like we started the week in review early with that game. I know, I know. That wasn't on that wasn't on the list.

Week in Review

But we do have some games to go over that were on our list. Do you let's start with the game that I watched that you you try to watch later, and then we'll go, but you couldn't really see it, and I'll tell you it was not a good feat, and that was Lewis Westminster. I'll go over that one quickly. Yeah, I couldn't get the stream going at all. Here's what I'll tell you, Danny. I was watching it, and it seemed to get progressively worse as the game went on. First of all, it was always kind of it was at Lewis. They usually do a widescreen, so you can't really read numbers, so you can see the players and everything, but it's still fairly wide. Uh and then the feed just started going out near the second at the end of the second quarter, and and the third quarter, it was like just it was like stop film. And the fourth quarter, it basically went out where it would it would stop for many seconds and then jump. It was not good, but I try to follow it. Wet Lewis pulls it out 13-12. You'll remember last week I had said Westminster had beaten Lynn. Can they hang with Lewis? They started out with a 2-0 lead over the Flyers. And then Lewis fights back, but the Griffins had a 3-2 lead after one, and then Lewis flips it. It's a mirror image. The second quarter, they outscore the Griffins 3-2. Same thing. Now it's 5-5 and a half. This will tell you how good a game was. From then on, from then on, it was back and forth. Lewis scores two, Westminster scores two. Then they go one-one-one-one-one until basically it Lewis goes up by two in the first minute of the fourth. And then once again, so now Westminster's down by two. They score the next two to tie it up at 12. Then Lewis player Zan Hayes scores with 405 to seal the game winner. Because that's how it was. There were there were times when it took a while for them to score, but it was a very close match. Here's where I would say that one of the team stats that's just glaring. We've talked about this before. Extra man, man up. Lewis went three for four. Westminster went 0 for 3.

See? Biggie. Yeah. Big difference stat right there.

That is. That is. Now it all also matters. I didn't go back to see if there were 30-second man-ups versus one minute. I always think you got a little more advantage, obviously, with the extra 30 seconds. But it was a good game. I really wish the feed was better because it was a fun game to watch. On Westminster's side, Luke Silstrop had four goals, one assist, and Cam Camden Staley had three goals. For Lewis, Paul Roskowski had four goals, one assist. Luke Schrader had three goals, and Malachi Good had two goals and four assists. He was feeding the ball.

Dish and dimes. Dish and dimes. Hey, I told you, you know, when we mentioned that game last week, I said these guys get after it. Every year there's a they're a good game between those guys.

So and it proved out this year. We thought it would be close. It was no disappointment. It was a game to watch. No. Do you want to talk St. A's Bentley?

Yeah, I'll talk about St. A's Bentley. Did you happen to watch that game or no?

Yes, I did. I watched that game.

What'd you think?

I think St. A's controlled the game most of the time. Both defenses played well, and it was close. Well, it wasn't close. I mean, they were up 5-0 at half. And I'll tell you the problem I saw is that Bentley was having trouble clearing the ball in the first quarter, which actually gave Saint A's a goal.

Yeah. Yeah.

And it was little, little mistakes like that that made it 5-0. I will tell you though, that I thought St. A's D did a really good job. Bentley could not beat their man, and when they did, Finn Grenara made the save. He didn't face a whole lot of shots, though. No, because they couldn't. I felt like they needed to move the ball. I felt like they were doing too much dodging and trying to score that way, and they couldn't beat their man.

And then you look at Jackson Tinsley, I swear he had some goals that I thought he had stopped, and they trickled in.

Yeah, there was one that trickled in behind his knee there on his leg.

I thought I I thought he made the stop, right? Yeah. Yeah. I thought and I thought, now, of course, I'm watching it on my computer, right? I thought he made a couple stops, or at least two, and next thing you know, the the refs' arms are up. But I'll tell you, St. A's was happy to let Bentley shoot from the outside.

Oh yeah. Well, here's what I got. I got, you know, St. A's, if you ask me, they control the game, and particularly the first quarter, which kind of set the tone for the game. Um, there was only two goals scored in the goal in the period, both by St. Ay's, a goal by the freshman Mark uh uh sophomore Mark Boyle, and the second goal by Matt LeMay. Guess what? Matt LeMay's brother, Brian, plays plays for Bentley. How cool is that from mom and dad?

And Matt's the freshman.

Yeah.

His brothers, and they both scored goals.

They both scored. So mom and dad had a good game, right? Yeah. Yeah, had a good game. So uh 12 shots for St. Ay's in that quarter. And each goalie made three saves. It was two zip after one. Second quarter. Bentley couldn't clear the ball. He couldn't clear the ball. St. Ay's completely controlled possessions again, caused havoc on the Bentley clear. Boyle added his second on a nice inside move, left wing to a righty bounce shot, you know, little toe drag left, righty bounce shot, like really nice goal. Uh Will Andrews scored his second of the day. A goal by St. Ay's Maverick Lion made it five zip. And then that was the first half. Third, Will Andrews scored again at the 922 mark, made it six-nothing, St. A's, and uh it was off to the races. It really, really was. Finally, Bentley, Brady's glass got on the board in the 131 mark of the third quarter before Bentley finally got on the board.

Yeah, and that was a it was 9-1 after three. Now, Bentley owned the fourth quarter. I mean, you look at shots, they were six to one in the fourth face off, they were six to one. I I don't know, I didn't really couldn't tell if you know they were changing out their defense on the St. A's a little bit more.

They didn't. They did. St. A's was changing out, guys.

And that's what brought him back. It made it so you're right. It made it look when you see 10-6, it's like, oh, that's not a bad game. But when you look at the first three quarters, yeah, it wasn't even close.

It wasn't even close. It was like those goals, like they got three goals in like the last two and a half minutes.

You know, like it they weren't going to win that game, you know what I mean?

So I was surprised to see Bentley play poorly like that. And St. A's was impressive, especially on defense. They were really wreaking havoc with Bentley. Yeah. And I was pretty impressed with St. A's for St. A's. Will Andrews with three, Maverick Lyon with two, Mark Boyle with two, Matt LeMay with two, Ben Turpin with one, uh Quinn Gannon and Evan Spillane split time at the dot, five for nine and four for eleven. They both, you know, okay, mediocre. Uh Finn Granara, our man, seven saves. Didn't see a whole lot of shots, Kev. Didn't see a whole lot of shots. Defense played well. Uh Tyler Vijayant, uh, three ground balls and two cause turnovers. Johnny Lucas, six ground balls and three cause turnovers. I'm suffering game, Johnny Lucas. Yes, he did. And Max Fowler, two cause turnovers for Bentley. Nathan Alvidi. He seems like he's been there forever, right? For some reason. He was injured last year.

And so that was on when we did the um NE10 preview. I'm like, I'm interested to see. And then I said when we did our top 20 and we did the players to watch, Nathan Alvidi was on my players to watch because he was he was coming back from injury. He had a good game, three goals, two assists.

Yeah, Brian LeMay, Matt's brother, yeah, and one, along with uh David Gannon, Brady Glass, they each added one. Dalton McKinnon was nine for sixteen at the dot. Our man Jackson Tinsley in between the pipes with nine saves. And Nick Kane, three ground balls, one cause turnover. Again, uh just kind of like a dominated. Game for St. A's against Bentley. And St. A's looked pretty good to me.

Yeah, I agree. Okay, let's move on to Seton Hill against Undy. Now, when they played, Seton Hill was ranked eighth. UIndy was ranked nine. You talked about this in your top 10 roundup. Seton Hill really dominated. Winning 15-5. They jump out to a 4-0 lead before UI battles back and answers with two. Actually, he went up 6-1. They were 4-0, then they went up 6-1, and then Undy battles back and answers with 2 to make it 6-3 at half, which are like, okay, that's uh that's respectable. You know, three goal margin going into half. I will tell you, I thought Seton Hill, it looked to me like UND was in a zone a lot. They were just moved the ball, just kept moving the ball, moving the ball, move the ball until that defense moved around and they found an open man. It it almost felt like they were a man up every time. Because that's how they were they were playing it.

Yeah, UND went into the zone quite a few times in the game.

And they beat it almost every time.

And I was like, wow, and they're in the zone again. And man, Seton Hill just kicked their ass in the third quarter. Yeah, 6-0 run. Just like just destroyed them. It was a fast-paced physical game.

St. A's. And gloves. It was like stacks of snow.

Dude, I'm watching. I'm like, damn, it looks cold out there. Just seeing those people dressed like that in the snow on the side. Like you said, Griffin's jumped out to a two, two-goal lead. Griff's played fast and aggressive on both sides of the ball. You Indy struggled offensively, especially in the first half. The Griff's defense played a clean and composed game. Yeah. Sliding when they had to, not sliding, not letting their man beat them, hands on hands, pushing bodies down the alley. Just played a really clean game. Brunel, Lockier, Zostant, Carter Green all scored before Undy even got on the board. I mean, it was dominating. It was a domination, Kev. I mean, Seton Hill just smacked Undie around.

Yeah, you talked about on their defense. I guess I got so mesmerized by how they're moving the ball on offense. But you look at the score. When you hold UIndy to three goals through three quarters, your defense is working really well. Yeah.

Undy's been averaging like 14 goals a game. They scored five. And none in the third quarter. Like it they that was just a beatdown. Seton Hill just beat them down.

Yeah, you look at the team stats. Shots. Seton Hill 42 to U Indy's 27. Shots on goal, 27 for Seton Hill, 13 for Undy. Clears, Seton Hill went 25 for 26. Undy only went 18 for 22. And then ground balls, 26 for Uh Seton Hill, 18 for Undy. Faceoffs, Seton Hill had that one, 15 to 8. You know, then uh man up, Seton Hill went two for three, and Undy went one for five. So even in that category, Seton Hill did better statistically.

Yeah. So Seton Hill goes to four and one. Their only loss, again, I mentioned it last week, was to number one Tampa.

And Undy goes to three and four, Kev. I'm not used to seeing Undy.

No below below 500. I talked about them when we did their preview, too. Like what were they going to look like? And I they're a really different team than what we've seen the past few years just from turnover. And they they've just they're they're still a very, very good team. But they're not as dominant as they have been in the past.

Yeah, no, they they're not. And I was just, yeah, five goals. That's that that says a lot about Seton Hill's defense. They just played, like I said, they just a clean and composed game, hands on sticks, pushing bodies down. UND couldn't beat their man. They couldn't do it. They just it was just a beatdown.

How they cleared, how they moved the ball, everything. All sides of the ball.

Told you Seton Hill's good. They're gonna be good. They're gonna be tough this year.

They were both in our top ten.

Yep, yep. They're gonna be tough. If they if they get an AQ, which Mercyhurst ain't there anymore. You know what I mean? It was Mercy Hurst and Seton Hill, Seton Hill and Mercyhurst for the last three, four years.

I'll tell you, Seton Hill looks better than I've seen in the last couple years, too. They look better.

So they're going to challenge everyone in the North. I would not be surprised.

You're gonna see them in the tournament.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the North Region final. I wouldn't be surprised to see them winning.

Yeah, I know. I'm telling you, they're gonna be tough. They are going to be a tough, tough out in the North. Again, only loss to number one Tampa. And Tampa looks like a professional team. They don't even look like a college team. Yeah. They look like a bunch of all-stars out there, man. Yeah.

Yeah. And like we said, that Tampa game, they lost, but they still look good. You could see what they had on that field.

No, they played well. You can play well and lose, you know what I mean? Yeah.

I mean, coaching football, I've lost to, you know, where my team played great. We came up short. You know what I mean? It just happens sometimes. You know, you play in a good team. They're going to do one or two things a little bit better than you. And that could be the difference. And again, Seton Hill, their only loss is to Tampa, and they look good. And uh, they're gonna be in the tournament, and people better watch out for the Seton Hill Griffiths.

I I don't want to say that I'm gonna because Coach Navant won't like me if I pick them to win and go. Coach Volpe of Adelphi would love me to pick them right now. And I'm not picking anyone, but you I agree with you. People better watch out for them, not only through the rest of the regular season, but definitely in the tournaments.

We talked about this. I think that I'd be shocked if anyone beats them in the GMAC tournament.

Me too. I mean, that would be a complete upset right now, the way I see it now. Yeah. It's starting to like kind of come into fruition a little bit. You're starting to see teams kind of take a path and where they're going. And it's starting. We'll see. There's still a lot of season left.

Now, that was a game. And if you ask me, that was nothing but uh quality lacrosse game. Two bells for that game.

Ding ding. What'd you think? Yeah, what just Flagler pulls it out 8-7 in overtime. Huge great crowd. I mean, you look at the way their stands are, you're like, oh, that doesn't look that people. But if you really look, there are people everywhere lined up on the ends. Like lined up on the fence line. I mean, you look in the parking lot, it is packed.

St. Leo had a chance, turned the ball over, Flagler comes down, and who gets it for the winner? McDonald. Trace McDonald. Coming from X with a wrap around, and that was a beautiful goal. I mean, that showed you his talent. You in overtime, you having an offense, and you're Flagler, who you're going to give it to?

That's what's funny. Flagler's was sliding so well on D in that first half, and first quarter especially, that it made it tough for St. Leo. But they were being very patient on offense. And Jurgensen be the first guy to tell you that. That they threw chances away. And when you're playing teams like Flagler and who are up and coming, and you're a team like St. Leo, you can't do that. You're going to pay the price against good teams.

Tied after regulation and an OT, like you said, wraparound from X, Trace McDonald on a nice goal. And Flagler crawls away with that one goal win at home. So St. Leo's a good team. Flagler's a good team. That was anyone's game. It was a really exciting watching game. And like you said, a lot of people at the game. The weather looked beautiful. And that's what quality lacrosse is all about, Kev, right there.

This is a game you hate to see anyone lose because it was such a good game. You know, it was just one of those things when you go to overtime, it was just a grinding game. I mean, 8-7. Someone has to, and you have to give credit to Flagler, right? Flagler, you know, maybe in years, certainly in years past, maybe not last year, two years ago, they probably would have lost that game. But they've got the winning mentality now.

And we are not the first to report on this story. This player is also a lifeguard at the Pace University pool. He was working earlier in the day prior to his game against Georgian Court when he had to save a man's life who had a heart attack in the pool. Then he had to turn around later and play a game. Pretty awesome. What a story. So let's welcome him in so we can hear about this day straight from his mouth. Kieran Hagen, D-pole for the Pace Setters. Yay.

Yeah, I you know, I actually don't remember much about that morning. That's the first time anybody's asking me about before that happened, but it was a normal morning, you know, and I started my lifeguard shift at 11 a.m. I was really close to calling out because we had a game that day, but I figured maybe I'll cut it close and go to the lifeguarding for that day. And I've been lifeguarding a case for four years. Um, and it's a really boring job, I'll be honest with you. I sit there in the chair and I watch the people swim, and then I wrap it up and I go about my day. Um, and that was almost what happened on Wednesday that day. Um, it was about probably 1.10, and I was almost done. I I leave work at 1.30, right? And this older gentleman comes to the pool. We exchange greetings, a very nice man, and he starts swimming a couple laps. I don't think anything of it. I know he's been to the pool before. Um, and he was just swimming, and all of a sudden, towards the end of the pool, near the deep end, um, I look over and his head's just a little bit under the water, maybe an inch or two under the surface of the water. And I don't think too much of it because he's near the the edge of the pool, right? And you know, they like to the the older people in general like to take breaks, you know, if that's fine. So maybe I thought he was like cooling off or whatnot. And then with the really unnerving thing was the bubbles coming up out of the water. That was my my big like red flag. I was like, oh, that typically doesn't happen. And so I run over, he's in the the back corner of the pool. So I run over to the back corner of the pool and I look over the ledge and he's just kind of sinking. And that was really the cue for me. Like, I gotta go in and get this guy off.

Yeah, I saw him just drop and it couldn't have taken more than 10 seconds, but I jump in the water and you know, get him up to the surface. And my my lifeguard buddy, the other person on duty with me, Angelo, um, gets the backboard and we get him out of the water pretty quick. Um, but that's when really that's when things kind of get airy because we we pulled him out of the pool and when we did our primary assessment, meaning we checked his pulse, um, we didn't we he didn't have a pulse at that time. And so we started doing CPR for probably three or four minutes before uh police arrived, um, which is a pretty good response time from them and the EMTs. Very grateful for that. Um, but we were doing chest compressions, rescue breathing, and we were lucky enough to have an AED with us at the pool. And so that got used twice before the um before the emp's erotic. And so we just did everything we could in that scenario to try and try and you know just do the best we can, I guess. Yeah.

So let me ask you this. Do you did you feel any kind of pulse or breathing once you did use the AED and everything, or was it more after the EMT showed up?

Yeah, so um when the EMTs show up, they they hooked them into like I don't know what it's called, because I by no means am uh I'm a medical person, I'm a finance major, but I so I don't know what they call it, but they they hooked me up to use machines.

Yeah, but you took the courses for CPR to be able to do what you did, which is critical, right?

SPEAKER_09 58:21

Yeah, I did.

Um never thinking you'd ever use them, right?

Yeah, especially doing it for four years. Yeah, yeah, and I and this the first time, yeah.

And I joke with my buddies, I was like, oh man, like I'm gonna leave pace because I graduate in May. I'm like, I'm never I haven't had to jump in once to save somebody, and you know, it's it's pretty weird, it's pretty funny. I joke about that because right at the end, you know, I was fortunate enough to like be there for this guy. But they hook him up to this machine, uh, the EMTs, and it said he had a pulse. So the pulse was showing up on the screen, and so I was like, really? I was very surprised to see that. I was thrilled because he started with no pulse. By the time I was done, he had a pulse. So that's really all I can ask for. Um yeah, and the EMTs did great work. Um, they had him in the pool for probably another five minutes until they they brought him to the nearby hospital, and then that was kind of that was kind of it. Yeah.

Wow, that's amazing. That's just an amazing your heart must have been like racing. Like what kind of feeling like did you or did you just like one of those just go into go mode?

SPEAKER_09 59:32

It was it was absolutely that. It was absolutely go mode. Um, I really wasn't thinking about anything, you know. It just kind of clicked. As soon as I saw this guy start sinking, like I said before, there was no more thought. And I mean, it wasn't really anything I was super overwhelmed or nervous about. I didn't have the time to think about like my own emotions in that situation. It just ref like reverted to like the default training that I had been taught, you know, countless times over my years at CACE. Um, we do like monthly in-service training, and so that's just to refresh our skills, like CPR, AED, the rescuing people from the water, all that gets refreshed every month. And so, you know, when I had to do my job for the first time, it was just I know everything I need to do. I didn't even have to think about it. It just kind of snapped into place, and I was just you know, I hate to say it, but I like autopilot kind of yeah, it's memory, right? Yeah, yeah, really. That's what it was. And so, yeah, I just that was it.

That when did it hit you that you actually saved this man's life? Was it when you saw the pulse or was it later in the day?

It was definitely later in the day because honestly, I I didn't have a good feeling about it the entire time I was actually at the pool. I mean, when we pulled this guy out of the water the first time, by the time we started CPR, he was like not in good shape at all. Like you could see kind of the blood draining from his face. He was he was like purple, and I was like, This is not good. Like, I I don't know if he's gonna make it. And my boss was there too. She was, you know, she's a great boss, but she was kind of freaking out. She was like, Oh my gosh, you gotta stay with me, stay with me. And I was like, just not like not really confident that this guy was gonna make it out alive, just given the circumstances, and so to hear that he's like made it out alive was was a thrill. But really, to answer your question, like 10 minutes after the EMTs left, it all just kind of hit me. I was like, what just happened? It all just kind of flooded in and kind of hit me like a trot when I was just sitting down, just kind of thinking over everything. But yeah.

Now, how did the story get out to the team? Like, how did everybody kind of find out? Like, well, you know, that's something that you don't you know, you kind of keep to yourself, you know, a lot of times, and then the story gets out, and I was like, uh-oh, now I gotta explain it to everybody, right?

This is this is a pretty funny story, actually. So I walk into the locker room, a little bit late, mind you, given the circumstances, but I walk into the locker room and my my good buddy James comes up to me and goes, You see all those cop cars outside the pool? One of your lifeguard buddies is getting fired. And I was like, I was I was the lifeguard on doing that. And you know, that was really funny. But on a more serious note, one of the assistant athletic directors, JR, was right by the pool and helped us get police and security in. And then after the incident kind of ended, he um he either reached out to to one of the other athletic administrators or just uh my coach Tom Ariano, and then he kind of talked to me about it during warm-ups. He was like, Weird day at the office, huh?

I was like, Yeah, you know, that was my that was one of my questions. What was it like to have to switch gears and get your game face on? And did did it happen like during warmups when Coach Mary has a tough day in the office?

Yeah, essentially. I was doing like high knees, and and coach comes up to me, he's like, Yeah, not a typical day. And I was like, no, no, coach, not at all. Um, but really, it wasn't that hard switching gears for me because I I said it before, it's very similar to like what I feel like playing in a game is like, you know, just kind of doing like just what you've practiced, what you know about the sport, just kind of in go mode, like Dan said. Um, it's it's very similar actually to just kind of playing, and I call it like the flow state, kind of just like not really thinking about what you're doing, not really like overthinking or overreacting to certain things, just playing, right? And it was very similar to that. So actually, I didn't have that much of a a trouble kind of transitioning because you know it just felt very similar. It was it was yeah, just doing what what you think is right, not really overthinking it.

So so let's switch. Why don't you tell us about your lacrosse journey and how you got to pace? When did you start playing? Sure, and how did you get recruited? You're a senior now, you're like the you know, one of the top dogs on the pace team. So talk to us about that.

Yeah, sure. So I played I started playing lacrosse in uh second grade. Um, played for Munro Woodbury, you know, the club team, just trying to like figure out what kind of sport I like. Played baseball before. I just kind of sat in the at-field, didn't really do anything. And my dad was like, All right, we gotta trick, we gotta find something else for this kid. And he signed me up for lacrosse, and I never really looked back. I mean, I just had such a good time playing this sport. Um, yeah, and I played all through high school, uh, section nine, shout out um, and and recruiting was definitely a weird thing for me because my junior year was COVID-19. And so yeah, my entire season got canceled and my life was kind of thrown upside down because I had some family members that were affected, especially by COVID-19. And so it was definitely a weird process, so much so that I I didn't really consider playing college lacrosse at that point. I was just like, forget it, I'll just go to college and study, not play a sport. Um, but I reached out to uh to Coach Mariana, I was basically like, hey, like, can I play a pace? And he was like, we'd love to have you. And that was kind of it. And I was like, all right, I'll I'll do it. Um my dad went to pace, so I was very familiar with kind of the campus. I live 45 minutes away, so I got to tour a couple of times, and it really just felt like a good fit, you know. And I'm I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to play here. And um yeah, that's it.

Yeah, we love we love Coach Mariano on the show. He's he's been on the show several times. He's a big advocate for the NE10. You know, like he says, oh, you know, the sack, it's the NE10, they're the blue collar guys, they're the cold weather guys.

He's we played two games every week, not just one game a week.

And he tried recruiting my son, and it was very funny because when we had him on the show, I didn't want to mention that my son was part of Wingate lacrosse at that time. I didn't want to mention it, you know. And uh and I said to Coach Mariano, you know, my son played with one of the guys that was on your team, and he goes, Which guy on my team? And I mentioned the guy's name, and he goes, Oh, yeah, Sean. We remember him. He he chose Wingate over us. I couldn't believe that I remember that, Kevin. I couldn't believe that he actually remembered, you know, like he's such a good guy, such a great advocate for sports, youth sports, women's sports, and the game of lacrosse with the how to knees with you know just everything that he's involved with. He's just a great, great ambassador for the game of lacrosse. And you get to see him every day. How's that like?

It's it's amazing. It's truly an honor to be to be coached by him. And I that goes the same for all of our coaching staff, really. I mean, they do an excellent job. And you know, like you guys mentioned, it's more than just lacrosse, it's more than just bass. I mean, they they set the standard for what it's like to be not only a lacrosse player, but a student, um, a community member, a leader. Like it really, they do an excellent job at at molding us into better people in general. And so I'm I'm very grateful for the the coaching staff we have here at Pace. They're excellent.

That's that's great to hear. We uh we would expect nothing less from the whole coaching staff underneath Coach Mariana, that's for sure. Pace jumped up to number four this week. I know, yeah, yeah. I know, I know. So let me ask you this. Sure. How do you manage your time? You've got lacrosse, schoolwork, a job, maybe a social life if you can fit it in. How do you manage your time across all those things?

SPEAKER_09 1:08:16

It's um it's certainly something I had to get used to. Um, it certainly takes some adjusting. Um, you know, because yeah, I have all that, and then it's like, oh man, I have homework to do, and yeah, I'm doing laundry right now. It's like it's the little things that kind of eat you up, and so it definitely takes some adjusting, but you know, like my whiteboard, just trying to stay organized and finding time in your day to get things done is like really important. It can't all get done at 9 p.m. Like I just have too much homework. So, like this morning I got up a little early and went to the library just to like knock some stuff out for the week, so I'm less stressed. And it's really just like time management, having a calendar. We have we have an app called Teamworks that tracks our practices and puts it in a calendar for us. So we have film, we have practice, we have away games, home games, all this calendar pre-filled out for us. That's really an excellent tool because I just get to like add, and classes are in there too automatically. So I just get to add like spontaneous like events and meetings I have to go to, and then laundry, like laundry, and then my calendar is done, and so I'm really cool. I'm very happy that that's a tool we have here at Pays. Um to just kind of have better manage our time. Yeah.

Have you done any internships or anything since you've been in school?

Yeah, I did one internship my junior year at UBS, um, which is essentially Union Bank of Switzerland. Now it's just UBS, but um, yeah, I did wealth management in the in the city for a summer, and that was a great experience. I had a great time with them. That was uh learned a lot for sure.

So you're senior. What do you want to do after you graduate?

I plan on commissioning in the US Army post-graduation, um, and then just being an officer in the army and kind of just figuring it out from here.

So are you do you have to go through OCS then? You're not because you're not an ROTC, aren't you? Correct.

Yeah, it's does not have an ROTC program.

So I'm going to I am the product of an ROTC graduation myself, but it was the Navy, not the Army.

Yeah, my oldest brother Tommy, he's an active duty infantry officer, he's stationed in Italy right now. And my middle brother Peter is a uh artillery officer in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and so that's what they do, and they've just been incredible like role models for me. They've kind of set the path of like, here's what it's like to be in the army, and that's a great resource to have. So I was like, yeah, yeah, no, I'd like to do that too. And so they've really just been in ahead of the game for me. I've kind of gotten to see like what their career progression's been like, and that's just an excellent resource to have.

Oh, my favorite professor. I had a professor, um, he's not listening, I can promise you that. Uh, Professor Nam, he was my risk management professor, and he was a really cool dude because he owned his own business, and he would come in like after work at night to teach us about risk management. And it was like the only course he was teaching, but he had just so much like real-world business knowledge about like financial risk management, and I learned a ton from his class, so probably him. He was a very interesting guy, too.

I don't want to be too cliche, but my dad had like a huge role in kind of pushing me to play lacrosse and like staying with it and just like telling me to do my best, like pushing me to be like the best lacrosse fighter I could be. And I I know a lot of people probably say that, but I really do mean it. And he he comes to as many games as he could can. And um I for I know for a fact I wouldn't be playing lacrosse right now without him. So he he's definitely for sure.

Well, Karen, I can be honest with you, not a lot of guys come on the show and say that their dad was not a lot. So I think that's pretty special that you uh shouted out your dad there. Because a lot of us dads don't get don't get that love that we deserve sometimes. You know, we get up early and go to work all day, too, you know, and then come home and get you guys to practice and make sure you got your stuff.

Oh no, that's tough. I like to read. I mean, not a ton of people know that about me. A couple of my teammates do, but I do like to read. I got like a stack of books right here. Um, yeah, and all sorts of books, really. Like I read a little bit of nonfiction, but sometimes I fick mix it up and read a fiction book here and there. And it's just a nice way, like at the end of the day, to kind of decompress, get off my screen for a little bit, because I feel like that's all I do nowadays. So it's it's nice to have some time to just you and your thoughts and just kind of read a book, you know.

And so when you go to OCS, depending on how good you do, like you get a pick. It's kind of like a draft pick. Like higher up you are on the list, you get a first draft pick. And EOD is a very competitive branch, and so small community. What does it stand?

That was a great deal.
