Intro
SPEAKER_04Hey Danny.
SPEAKER_05Hey Kev. It's a big day here on Long Island. I heard. I heard. It's some celebrity's birthday. Yeah, a couple of years ago.
SPEAKER_06That good woman, Carol Moran, gave birth to a bouncing baby, blue-eyed, blonde-haired boy. Exactly 61 years ago. Uh at 639 at Bronx Lebanon Hospital in 1962. Happy birthday, my friend. Happy birthday. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. I can't believe it. I mean, 61. I mean, I don't feel 61. 61 years young, my friend.
SPEAKER_04And I certainly don't act. And I certainly don't act 61. You know, we were called out this weekend. We were called the too old D2 lacrosse guy. And I thought for a second, hey, wait a minute. And then I thought, you know what? The truth hurts sometimes.
SPEAKER_06He's right. We'll talk about those guys later. But yeah, thanks so much, man. Appreciate it. So far, so good. How to work like I do all the time. You know how it is.
SPEAKER_04I hear you. I hear you. But I hope the rest of your day, well, you know, my birthday present to you is you get to do the top 10 roundup again.
Top 10 Roundup
SPEAKER_06The top 10 roundup. All right, Kev, we got this week's top 10 roundup. And boy, oh boy, did we have one hell of a week in Division II lacrosse this week. Number one, Lemoyne is rolling along, though. They beat St. Michael's 14 to 6, and the Dolphins remain 8-0. Number two, Mercy lost a big one. To number seven, Mercy Hearst. We'll talk about that game. They lost 16 to 10, and the Mavs sit at 8-2. Number three, Tampa lost. To number 13, Rollins. We'll talk about that game too. Tampa sits now at 8-2, Kev. I'm in shock. Number four, Lenore Ryan lost. To number eight, Wingate, 16 to 10. We'll also talk about that one as well, Kev. And the the Bears sit at 9-2 now. Adelphi rolling, rolling, rolling. Keep them do. They are just rolling along. They beat Assumption 16 to 5, Kev, and they sit at 9-0. Number six, UND beat Davenport 21 to 10 and sit at 8-1. Number 7, Mercy Hurst, like I just said, beat number two, Mercy 16 to 10. And the Lakers sit at 6-1, Kev. Number 8, Wingate, like I just said, beat number 4, Lenore Ryan 16 to 10. And the Bulldogs sit at 9-1. Number 9, Frostburg State lost to Seton Hill, Kev 14 to 13 in overtime. And they sit at 9-1. And number 10, Pace beat Southern New Hampshire 12-11, and the Setters sit at 7-1. So that's this week's top 10 round.
Week in Review
SPEAKER_04And you mentioned it. You just went through them. Wingate beats LR. Mercyhurst beats Mercy. You didn't mention this one, but Newberry beats Anderson and Rollins beats Tampa. I mean, it was just one crazy week. We said it could happen. It shook up the top 20, really shook up the top 10 in the USILA poll. Where do you want to start in the week in review?
SPEAKER_06Kevin, I don't know where to start. I mean, what this might have been the most exciting single weekend in Division II we've had in a couple of years, man. I can't think of another weekend that's gonna be.
SPEAKER_04It started last Wednesday. So why don't we start last Wednesday? And we'll start off, we'll start off with Newberry Anderson. I actually, because it was on the same time of Wingate, Lenore Ryan, I had both teams going on in my command central, but I had to go back and watch the Newberry Anderson game on replay. You mean North Greenville Anderson? No, Newberry Anderson. They played last Wednesday, and then North Greenville ends up beating Anderson over this weekend.
SPEAKER_06Right, right. That's what game I thought you were going to talk about.
SPEAKER_04No, I'll talk about Newberry first. We can grab grab North Greenville later on. So the last Wednesday, Newberry Anderson. Newberry beats Anderson 17 to 12. Did you watch get to see any of this game? I saw a little bit of it, yeah. So look at look at this. Cam Weeks only had three face-offs that day. And even with that, when they started, they didn't look like to me like the same team. But they with Cam Weeks out, they go up and they they're they take the lead 3-2, and then Newberry ties it. And then Newberry just starts to go on a roll. They are playing really well on offense. They're splitting the Anderson's D. You know, they're they're beating their defensive man on the inside, and then there's no help on the backside. So they get to a three-goal advantage and make it seven to four. And now Anderson actually fights back. They fight back, they make it seven, seven at half. And then it goes back and forth for a while. It gets to 10-10, and that's it, Danny. That is it. Newberry opens it up, and they basically own possession in the last part of the third, and their crowd was really getting into it. Newberry goes and brings it up to a seven-goal advantage and makes it 17-10 before uh you know Anderson scores the last two. But I'll tell you, I never saw Anderson's offense look like they were clicking while Newberry was clicking on all cylinders. Defense, offense, face-off, goalie play.
SPEAKER_06You know, Anderson hasn't been Anderson in the last couple of games. And I know that Cam Weeks, their their all-American face-off guy, has been a little injured. And uh, I don't think he played at all in the last game. He played sparingly, sparingly in Newberry game, and sparingly the week before, if I'm not mistaken. So, you know, they're they're a little bit out of sorts right now. They're having trouble getting that offense going, and and Newberry, Newberry's a good offense, and they have a good defense. Yeah, they have a great goalie. So, like they're that that didn't surprise me.
SPEAKER_04That didn't surprise me. So uh for Newberry, Jake Jack Travassos had eight ground balls and six cost turnovers, talking about their defense. Brody Maxwell on the offensive side had four goals and three assists, and James Osario had four goals and one assist. So they were really balanced on offense and defense, like you said. You know, Hunter Klosterman still had 17 saves for for Anderson, but Newberry was just too strong. And like you said, let's just follow up with the other game you're talking about, North Greenville. That was this weekend. North Greenville wins that game 10 to 5. 10 to 5, Danny. They were up the whole game. They held Anderson to zero goals in the first half, and they were winning something like 10-2 going into the very end of the fourth quarter.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, um, Anderson did not come to play that game. They did not come to play, and North Greenville did. And North Greenville put it to them, Kev. Put it to them. They were beating them on the face-offs, they were getting 50-50s, they were forcing Anderson to be, they weren't in sync, they weren't able to get anything going offensively at all. At all.
SPEAKER_04You and I talked about this before we started recording. I think that Anderson has the horses, both on offense to deep and defense. They're still a great team, even without Cam Weeks. But for some reason, when he has been out the last two games, they, especially in offense, have not been in sync. But you've got to credit the Crusaders in this game and Newberry, the last the game before that. They took advantage of every opportunity presented to themselves. And and that's what it takes to win. And the Crusaders did a phenomenal job on Saturday, as well as Newberry, you know, last Wednesday.
SPEAKER_06You know, they're just they're just not scoring as much as they were in the in the games previous to these last three games. You know, they were scoring 23, 13, 15, and nine, and then they Newberry put 17 on them. They only scored 12, but to only score five goals, and you know what? Their fourth and fifth goal, Anderson, came at a minute and 56 seconds left in the game. Like that's right. It was they were dominated. North Greenville, the Crusaders played a great game, and you know what? Jared Steinman had three goals. Aiden Sidemore had two goals, Matt Hayden had one, Thomas Asiri had one, Alex Brooks. I mean, it was a team effort for those guys, you know. Anderson, you know, Logan Gaddis only had one. Matty Rogers only had one. Uh Raiden Baudron, their freshman, that kid's ball, and he's got like 40 goals this year. He's like he's sitting at the top, like near the goal scorers in the SAC. And he had a big what he had one, none. He had goose egg. He didn't even score. So I don't know what's going on with the Sanderson team. I don't think it's all Cam's fault. No, you know, the other guys have to come up and they have to step up and they have to step in. And you know what, just because one guy is out doesn't mean the whole team should fall apart. It just did not play well against the Crusaders, Kevin.
SPEAKER_04No, I agree. But and that's what confused me, because like I said, they've got the players and the talent to be near the top in Division II, I think. Or certainly in the top 20. And yeah, they're good. They're a good team. And they just have fallen the last few weeks. Okay. But let's talk about the other game from last Wednesday. Wingate goes between the bricks against Lenore Ryan, and they come out and win 16-10. Let me tell you, Danny. This is what I wrote as a note. Wingate did not dominate the whole game, but they were dominant. They and they dominated that first half. I don't think I've seen a better played first half by a team than Wingate did that first half. Everything defense, offense, face-offs, ground balls, goalie play. And the goalie play topped it all off for me. I mean, it was it was like the icing on the cake on the way Capone played that first half. I mean, he played, I was telling you this. I saw some goals scored on him on the second half. I'm like, what happened there? I'm like, oh yeah, that's a goal. The goalie shouldn't stop. And he was stopping those kind of goals in the first half.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh Wingate played a great game. They were fast and furious and aggressive on all sides of the ball. Um, their defense came to play. They were getting sticks on guys, they were putting bodies on guys. It was a physical game. Um, you know, and during the second half, it, you know, it seemed like Lenore Ryan was starting to find their mojo a little bit. But you know what? Even even the shots that they were getting off weren't super duper clean shots. Defenders were getting sticks on hands, hands on sticks, sticks on sticks, causing the ball to go high, causing the ball to go low, causing the ball to go wide. So there was a lot of shots by Lenore Ryan, but the wingate's defense, that that defense was stout. I'm gonna say right now that that that defense was stout. I mean, you we can talk about the offense all day long. Right with the Wing pulled off.
SPEAKER_04This was this was my note, and this is the first half, but it was even in the second half. In the first half, Lenore Ryan was stymied by that defense. You mentioned how, and when they did get through, you know, a handful of times, less than a handful of times, Capone made the save. And I'll tell you what I think, you know, here's the telling stat I think that really shows how well the defense played. Lenore Ryan had 53 shots, but only 28 were on goal. And that will tell you, like you said, they were getting on their hands. They were they were getting good checks on them so that they could not get a good shot off.
SPEAKER_06You know, I just thought what I just thought that the whole defense for Wingate, the short stick D. Middies and John Natoly and Trent Connolly made it really hard for those guys to get, you know, that's where it started it. That's where it started. I thought I thought they played well. John Natoli has been out for a couple of games with injury. This is his first game back for the Bulldogs, and it couldn't come back at a better time. That that he helped that defense a lot. And listen, those those close poll guys, Peyton Farley and Nick Arnold, even Johnny Salomon and Joe Carnage and um sophomore LSM, Noberto De De Hoyos, those guys can play, Kevin man.
SPEAKER_03They're they were aggressive.
SPEAKER_04They they came out looking you I said it probably more than you. I thought Lenore Ryan had the advantage on this game. They had Wingate's number, especially on their home turf. Yeah. But I'll tell you what, Wingate came out with a purpose from the first face-off, probably before the first face-off. They were just itching and ready to go. It's exactly how they came out against Limestone in the Crown Classic.
SPEAKER_06Kevin, Wingate put eight on them in the first quarter.
SPEAKER_04And if you look at the stats, it would they beat him in goals in the first quarter by a lot and in the second quarter, and then Lenore Ryan, I uh, you know, had a I think maybe. They started emojo. You're not gonna stop Lenore Ryan.
SPEAKER_06You're not no, no, they were ranked number four. I told you all they've been rolling, they've been steamrolling guys. That's what I thought. Yeah, you know, they're an excellent offense, but they struggled that night. They struggled, and that I think it was the defense. I do too. And you know what? And you know, when a team gets down six, seven, seven, eight goals, Kev, teams start to do things that they don't normally do. They press to they start to press, they start to push, and that's what Lenora Ryan did. And if you remember last year, Wingate outshot an outground ball, the same stats, kind of, except they ran into Noah Johnson, who had a good on his game in goal. That's right. So now it was the opposite. You know, you had you know, Lenore Ryan outshot Wingate, but they met a goalie who had the the game of his life at the end game of the season.
SPEAKER_04Let's give Wingate's offense some some credit too. I mean, if you look at that first half, man, they were so they moved the ball so well, and it was a different shooter almost every time. Yeah, that was getting open. They weren't, and it wasn't in the same spot. It was not always a dodge. Sometimes it was off ball, sometimes it was a dodge. It was a thing of beauty, and then they were they rode well. It they just did everything really well, and some key stats, I think, for for Wingate that that kind of pushed it. So James Cotcamp at face-off, he went 16 of 28. That's huge against Lenore Ryan. You absolutely last few years, Lenore Ryan had the face-off, higher face-off percentage, and you get that momentum going and you win that. That's what Wingate needed. Johnny Capone, 18 saves. We already talked about him. Willie Greco, four goals and five assists. That's why that is why he was the preseason player of the year. What he just did against Lenore Ryan.
SPEAKER_06If I'm a coach, I'm like, I want that guy with the ball in his hand. Get it to get it to him, get it to him. Let him make the mistake, let him make the pass, let him take the shot, let him initiate. That was good.
SPEAKER_04He he does make mistakes, but he rarely makes mistakes. He does. And then Joey Milan had four goals and one assist. I mean, it was it was they had and Danny Riley had two goals and two assists. I mean, they really kind of, or three assists. Yeah, so they they really spread the ball well. A lot of guys had two goals or one goals. You know, Lenore Ryan, Tommy Aguilar had three goals, Miles Moffat and Torren Eccleston both had two goals. So, and they started to get going, like I said, in the in the second half. But I'll tell you what, there was no stopping Wingate from this game.
SPEAKER_06No, I thought Victor Powell played well uh on defense. He was making plays as he always does, but he's a beast. He's a beast. And his little brother Donnie that we talked about. Yeah, remember when we had Victor on the show, who was the better one? Yeah, Donnie made his first start, man, at attack for for Lenore Ryan. And he got introduced to Mr. John Capone, and he had a long day, and he had a long day, his first day. But you know what? Kudos to those guys, they played really well again. Yeah, Capone with 19 saves. LR tried some two-way stuff, they kept their guys on a couple of times, didn't work because you know why? Wingate's got two ways now. Yeah, they that kid Jackson Grant can go two ways, man.
SPEAKER_04Well, so can so can Natoli. So can Damon Langason. He did that a little bit, so yeah.
SPEAKER_06So they got two ways. So, and you know what? They're the wingate's getting a lot of uh production out of their midfield. Uh and uh it doesn't matter whether it's the ones or the twos or even the third line of midfielders because they're all getting theirs. So wingate's a dangerous team. If you're gonna play wingate, you're gonna you're they're dangerous. So then they got Anderson next week, and they got that game on circled. You can you can guarantee that. But I gotta say one thing the announcers for Lenora Ryan, you guys are the homiest homers, home, home guy, home spun, home cooking, home, home team licking uh guys I've ever heard in my life. Not only that, you got Joey Moran's name wrong. His name is Moran, M-O-R-A-N. And they called him Moron, not once, but twice. So, guys, get your acts together and make sure that you can pronounce the name, especially when the kid's putting up four and one against your team and he's only a freshman. You think you'd get his name right? And it's not a really difficult name. It's not like it's hockey where it's you know Sabanajet and Chekhov and Malar. Well, Danny Man.
SPEAKER_04This could be more psychological operations, just like when President George Bush in the early 90s called Saddam Hussein Saddam. Okay. Same thing. I think they could be doing it. But I'll tell you what, I I told you this already. I didn't listen to any of the commentators that night because I was editing the podcast. So all I could do is watch it. Smart.
SPEAKER_06Those guys gotta get their act together and stop being so homey.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, but I'm sure the Lenore Ryan fans. Love the way they do it. So there you go. All right. So how about this game was great? Mercyhurst against Mercy, number seven against number two. Mercyhurst, they don't just pull it off. They win handily 16 to 10. I thought, Danny, this started off as a chess match, but really in the end, I think it was like a war of attrition. Mercy Hurst just wore them down.
SPEAKER_06The first quarter was like, wow.
SPEAKER_04Mercy's up 7-3 after one. And I wrote this note. I wrote this note, Danny. I was thinking Mercy may be that dominant team in D2 after that first quarter.
SPEAKER_06That's you know, I was kind of I was kind of thinking the same thing, Kevin. But Mercy Hurst. Yeah, I have to admit, I I was thinking the same thing. I I thought I thought Mercy, I thought Mercy was going to win that game. I really did. Even at at Mercy Hearst. Because I don't think Mercy Hearst as well. We both gave them the nod. We both gave Mercy the nod. But I'll tell you what. And they blew they blew out to that 7-3 lead. And I was like, wow, Babs are here to play. Yep. Yep. But then Mercy Hearst fights back, and they get it to 8-7 at half.
SPEAKER_04And here's the other thing I wrote as a note in the first half, and they continued. They got some goals to get close by getting man up goals. They did not waste their EMO opportunities. They went four for five that day. Yeah. Mercy went 0 for 3.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. You know what? The second half for Mercy was probably the worst two quarters I've seen the Mavs play in two years. They didn't score anything in the fourth. It was 6-0 in the fourth. Which I was in shock because that's such a prolific offense, man, with Gibbons and Kearnan and Heider and you know Calabries. They're just, you know, loaded for bear on the offensive side. And I was in shock.
SPEAKER_04I wrote a note. I also wrote a note in the fourth quarter that to me Mercy's defense looked really tired. I don't know if you saw the same thing, but Mercyhurst owned the possession time in the third.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04And a lot in the fourth. And so, of course, I would think you're going to be tired if you're always playing defense. I don't know if that was just in my head because they were playing defense that much. The Lakers just brought it to them.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, they outshot Mercy.
SPEAKER_04They, you know, Mercy had one less turnover. The ground balls, Mercy Hurst 47 to Mercy's 35.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's big. That's big. You know, the face-offs were relatively close, but that four out of five on the EMOs really sticks out at you, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_04That I will tell you what, and I think we I joked about it when we just talked about Lenore Ryan and psychological operations. But when you go man down, and every time Mercy Hurst is scoring.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, well, it definitely gets in that head of yours. Yeah. Again, I again, I was in shock for that second half because Mercy blew out to that lead. And I expected Mercy Hurst to come back a little bit. I didn't expect it to be a blowout. I knew Mercy Hurst was going to come back. But in the third quarter, you could just see the momentum change. You could see that they had more possessions, they were getting more shots, they were get beating their man. Maybe not all the shots were going in, had some wide shots, but they were getting theirs. And to hold the Mavericks, who've been just such a great team for the past two years, to hold them to just two goals in the second half is unbelievable to me. I'm kind of blown away by that. Again, first worst two quarters I've seen the Mavs play in a while.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and Mercy Hurst just kept on coming and coming and getting stronger and stronger. Miles Hamm, five goals. Ethan Lanimore, three goals, one assist. Nicholas Mabe, three goals and three assists. And Brent only had 14 saves with a 58% save. He played well. He played well. He played well. Tommy Umano played great the first quarter. Great. He's a great goalie. He's a great goalie. He is. I just think when you play defense that long, you just, you know, it's mentally taxing and physically taxing.
SPEAKER_06You know, Mercy Hurst and Landemore and Hammond, those boys can play, Cap. Those boys are Division I caliber players. So they're gonna get theirs. And Hamm and Landemore kind of been quiet this year, not as crazy as they were last year, but they're still doing great. And and I think Tommy Amano is one of the better goalies in all of all of Division II. So Mercy, that was a big loss for Mercy. That's gonna drop them down a little bit, but I expect them to be around come tournament time.
SPEAKER_04I agree. I agree. Okay, I got another game for you that we talked about last week because it was the battles of the unbeaten in conference play for Conference Carolinas, and that was Belmont Abbey against Mount Olive. Belmont Abbey pulls it out 8-7, and they jumped out to a 4-1 lead to end the first. And I thought this was almost like Mercy Mercyhurst game a lot of ways. Scores a little bit different, right? And it was close because I thought they had it in hand. They were playing, their defense was really playing well. They were shutting down Mount Olive. They increased the lead to 6-2 to end the half. But Mount Olive didn't give up. And they kind of owned the second half. They tightened up on their D. They climbed back in. They outscored Belmont Abbey 3-2 in the third to get it to 8-5. Then they shut them out in the fourth. So they did what Mercyhurst did. But unfortunately, Mount Olive could only score two in the fourth. And so Belmont Abbey holds on because Belmont Abbey's defense still played well. Belmont Abbey's 7-3 now, Kev. Yeah. And then Thomas Sullivan. Thomas Sullivan had a great game there, goalie. 14 saves. And once again, man up, Belmont Abbey went two for three. Mount Olive went over three.
SPEAKER_06Hey, you know what? I think that Belmont Abbey's, I'm looking at the rest of the schedule. They, you know, with that win over Mount Olive, that was a good win for them. And now they got Emmanuel, Chawan, Lees McRae, all winnable games. Yeah. For Belmont Abbey and the Crusaders. And then they're going to have to face a tough limestone team at the end of the season. So I'm happy for the Crusaders. They really fought their way back, didn't they?
SPEAKER_04Right. And, you know, they will obviously be at the top of the conference when they go into their conference tournament. And I think the way they've played, you know, it could be tough to beat them. Now I think there's still some teams that have the chance. I think Mount Hollywood, the way they played in the end. I think Barton, the way they played. North Greenville. If they come and play like they played against Anderson, it it could be tough. But Belmont Abbey right now is still the king of the mountain, and they've shown that in every conference game they play. Yeah, they'll be there.
SPEAKER_06They'll be there. They're probably going to be the champs. Somebody's got to knock them off. I don't know who can. North Greenville.
SPEAKER_04I'll tell you, I don't know. It could be that. It could even be Barton if Barton comes to play. I mean, I just think it's it it'll that will be a fun conference championship to watch.
SPEAKER_06Because you know why there's new boys in there and they're getting theirs, and it's good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04All right. Another one where, you know, we've seen this before. Two at the top of their their division, I mean their conference, Colorado Mesa against Westminster. Did you watch any of this game? No, I did not. So I was actually uh I watched some of it. I watched it on replay uh on on Sunday because you know what else do I have to do with my life? I thought it'd be a close game. I thought it would be a close game when we talked about it last week. Colorado Mesa ruled. They win 23-8. And this is how they did. This would be they they went out and they didn't, they went on an 8-0 run. They came out firing 44 seconds in into the game. They they won. They got a goal by JJ Brumman, and they followed it up with another goal after 90 seconds. So 44 and then you know 46 or 30, whatever. They they already hit was 2-0. They their defense shut down Westminster. Westminster. And then their D led to quick transition. So they were up 5-0 after one. And and it just kept rolling. Now, now, interestingly, they're up 8-0. And I'm thinking, okay, what can happen here? Well, Westminster comes back and scores the next three to end the half, and they're 8-3, and they're only down by five, and they hold Colorado Mesa from scoring until 9-20 was left in the third quarter. So that was a good, you know, eight minutes that they didn't score. That color they held, but then once again, they didn't score till 9-20 left. They scored four goals, Danny. Colorado Mesa scored four goals in a minute. And then next thing you know, it's 12-3.
SPEAKER_06I think I think Port Westminster's tired, Kev. They were tired. They have just had to face Rollins, Tampa, Florida prior to the Colorado Mesa game. All right. They lost to Rollins 21-11. They really great game. They went all out against Tampa, came up short. And they played really good against a good Florida Southern, came up short. They just hadn't they had nothing left in the tank for Colorado Mesa.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and actually, uh, we're having Coach Kerwin on. That's actually one of my questions for him. And I think it goes for what Colorado Mesa has to do. We go back to what they have to do for travel. And certainly those two teams in the RMAC do the most traveling. 100%. And that's gotta be tough, like you said, in tiring. You know, so a few shout-outs. AJ Switzer of Colorado Mesa, four goals, five assists. And the brothers, JJ and Jed Brummet, both had three goals. So they they just they just dominated, and it was uh it was great to see.
SPEAKER_06Hell of a schedule, though, for Westminster, huh? Wow. Yeah, they have a very tough schedule.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06You Indy, Maryville, uh Rollins, like I said, Tampa, Florida, Southern, Colorado, Mesa. They do not back down in their schedule. Well, that's a tough schedule, man. That's a tough schedule. Yeah, I just think they had they had no gas left in the tank to play with the Colorado Mesa that day.
SPEAKER_04Well, here's funny, too, Danny. Going into that game, Colorado Mesa was 8-2. Already they played 10 games. That was their season home opener, Danny. I know. If you hear a talk talk about them having to travel, Westminster and Colorado Mesa, Colorado Mesa had played 10 games, none of them at home.
SPEAKER_06That's crazy. And went 9-2, right? They're 9-2 right now. 8-2. Now they're 9-2.
SPEAKER_04They were 8-2 before the game, right? Yeah. Okay. Okay, but let's move on. This game, Danny, under the lights in Orlando, Rollins against Tampa.
SPEAKER_06Oh, Kevin. What a game. What a game. I mean, I don't even know what where does where to begin. Where uh definitely a quality win from Rollins.
SPEAKER_04Well, Rollins came out just like Wingate came out against Lenore Ryan. They came out on fire. That was the first win ever by Rollins over Tampa. Yeah, yeah. And also, let it sink in. The score. They won 12-6. They held Tampa, the Spartans, to six goals. Have you ever seen that? Have you ever seen Tampa only score six goals?
SPEAKER_06First game I've seen Tampa, Tampa play in three years. Rollins beat the snot out of them. There's no excuse for Tampa at this point. There's no excuse. You're Tampa. You got a target on your back. Teams are going to bring your their A game. And then it's an SSC conference game. And Rollins was home. Did you see the crowd there?
SPEAKER_04Huge. Huge, Jenny. Actually, Avon Tampa, they they traveled pretty well, but they only had a third of the stadium, and it was packed in there. And did you see the tar pit? What they call the tar pit the yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. Three of those guys were having fun. It was Saturday night, man, in Florida. Beautiful night, palm trees, everybody out. That was a great game. Hey, Rollins knocked the snot out of Tampa. They beat him up in every facet of the game, Kevin. Every facet. They were faster to the ball. They were faster on defense. They were faster on offense. They moved the ball well. Yeah. Um, they were able to get pretty good shots off.
SPEAKER_04Uh, they weren't getting like crazy easy goals, but yeah, so Rollins starts started it right off. They score 39 seconds to the game. Just like I said, just like what we saw in some of the other games talked about, but just like Wingate, they're like, we're coming, we're coming after you. Their ride was awesome. Their ride against Tampa was awesome, really good, and their D-mittis were pressing and creating havoc. And then their their offense. They were patient on offense, Danny, but they did not back down on transition. If there was an open look and they could they could move the ball, they could do that. I thought at first that that maybe they were going to kind of take uh a page out of Frostberg's um playbook and just try to stick with stick with Tampa in the six-on-six. But I'll tell you, what they did is they moved the ball. They moved the ball, like you said, really well. And if they could do something quick on transition, they weren't afraid. They've got the athletes to match up with Tampa and speed. And so they tried it.
SPEAKER_06But oh, he went off. Jack Johnstone had himself a game, man. He was like his Dirk Novitsky. He was like Dirk Novitsky, you know. Like some of the basketball shot. He's in like all these like different angles and his body shot and his body angle. And I think that might have tripped uh you know Blake Ulmer up in goal a little bit because some of those goals were not like I'm gonna say awkward looking, kind of it.
SPEAKER_04Can I say that? Well, I'll tell you, they they they weren't afraid to pass to Jack on the crease, high, low. And he picked him up and put him in.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he had a great game, man. He was really good. He was really, really good. Justin White had one, Grant Hansen had one, Logan Myers had two Mikey Brain had a big one, uh, Justin Spencer. I mean, it was a team.
SPEAKER_04I had Jack Johnston with five goals, Grant Hansen with two goals and two assists. And here's the other thing I'd say Shahe had some great saves. Yeah, he had some, he had an unreal one bailing them out on a 1v1 at like 855 left to go in the second.
SPEAKER_06Yes, yes, yes. Great save.
SPEAKER_04And and once again, d tell me that doesn't play with your mind as a as an offensive player for Tampa.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, when Danny Fitzpatrick only has one goal, that kid's been balling out. You know what? Kolkowski only had one ball, one goal, nothing for Luke McAnney. Like they you know, Rollins when I saw them earlier in the year and they beat Limestone, they were getting sticks in lanes, they were aggressive on defense, and I said that, Kevin. They're aggressive on defense, their defense is very good, their short sticky middies come out, they press, they force you down alleys, they force uh sticks out the ball out of guys' hands, and on offense, they can move the ball and they can score.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. I saw the same thing on their defense, and they slid and recovered really well, preventing Tampa from getting any good shots off.
SPEAKER_06Now, you know what? That sh kind of shakes the Sunshine State conference up a little bit because now that gives Tampa a loss in conference. Rollins is undefeated in conference right now. So could could all could everything have to go through Rollins at the end of the season for them? It does right now. They just proved it. Wow. Yeah. Big, big, big win for Rollins in their program.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I've got one other game as a as a notable, and that was the Florida Tech Lynn game. Didn't watch that one, guys. Okay, it was it was on early uh Saturday morning, and I was watching when I was watching something else, and I have to point it out because it was a great game. It went to overtime 13-12 Florida Tech the victor. Once again, Florida Tech started off and was ahead 8-2. Lin then made a 10-4 run, and they scored with 10 seconds left to tie it at 12.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_04And then it was it was a great game, but then Zach Rosgani, he was left open on the crease. He got a great pass to score his only goal of the game in overtime and give Florida Tech Panthers the win. Wow. It was a great game. It was a great game. I mean, Florida Tech, I I give Lynn a lot of credit. They battled and they battled because Florida Tech had them on the mat. Had them on the mat early. Lynn's like, nope, we'll keep pressing. We're gonna keep coming. And they shut down, they shut down Florida Tech in the second half, really, from scoring, only scoring four. And so it was a it was a it was a good game to watch. It was a good game to watch.
Coach's Spotlight
SPEAKER_04Okay, Danny, let's move on to our coach's spotlight. I'm excited about this one because we are bringing back the first coach we ever interviewed on this podcast. He sort of blazed the trail for all coaches to follow. He sits the bar, Danny. He sits the bar. That's right. That's right, good. So let's just welcome him in, Coach Joe Kerwin, head coach of the Westminster Griffins.
SPEAKER_01Hey guys, coach good to be back. Coach Carwin. Yeah, how's it been going, Coach? Good, good. You know, we're uh we're battling, and uh, you know, it's middle of season here, and uh yeah, we uh some highs and some lows. So, but uh always good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so let's talk about that. Danny and I have coined your team, probably the best team that is under 500 this year. You only lose to Tampa in overtime, you only lose to U Indy by four goals and had some great wins against Lynn and Rockhurst. So just give us an assessment of your 2023 team and season so far.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's uh I mean it's been up and down, right? We've we've definitely had an ambitious schedule. Um, and uh, you know, four for five of our opponents are in the top 13. And uh, you know, so it's uh we put it out there, you know, and it's kind of something we've always done. And and it's uh, you know, when you're scheduling, you never know uh what you're you know, how teams are gonna be that year. And uh, you know, some teams kind of fluctuate up and down. So, you know, some years you you schedule the best you can, and and those teams do really well. And all of a sudden you've got a uh pretty pretty solid schedule to put together. But um, you know, it's uh our guys have uh have been battling. It's been you know great experience. We have a really young team, we have 21 freshmen on our team. So uh one of our 48 guys, we have 21 freshmen, so a pretty young group, and especially on the offensive side. And uh, you know, they've done a great job. You know, it's been uh trial by fire for a lot of these guys, and uh, you know, they're out there battling, and uh you know, they haven't shied away, which I'm I'm really happy about. And uh, you know, they just kind of show that uh you know that mental toughness and and to do it all on the road. And uh, you know, it's uh it's been a good experience.
SPEAKER_06The amount of traveling guys that you guys do is just amazing. How does the team react, you know, after like a three-game road strip where you're coming out to the East Coast?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's you know, you have to manage it, right? It's it is tough. It's hard on uh, you know, their bodies, it's hard um academically. Um and you know, just and then just mentally um it's draining throughout and you know, have to go through the whole process to you know set everything up with your with your professors and and make sure everything's in line before you go um and get back and then have a little catch-up work to do. So there's there's a lot to it. And uh, you know, we just try to make sure we're not trying to stress them out right when they get back. Obviously, if we can schedule around that aspect of it um as best we can, but uh it's not always the case. You know, we got back from uh from St. Louis and then we had a game, you know, four days later. So we uh you know, sometimes it doesn't work out, but we just you know giving days off and uh just trying to manage it as best we can, but um it's changed. Right. That's definitely one of our challenges.
SPEAKER_04And Dan and I talked about this uh earlier when we were we were reviewing some of the games. You just finished with Colorado Mesa, but before that, you were down in Florida playing against uh SSC teams. No joke. Tampa, then Florida Southern. Two top 20 teams, one of them in the top 10, you know, the winner last year of the whole thing. And then you got to turn around really six days later. I don't know if you traveled, you may probably travel even back on Monday. So it's really even a shorter schedule. That must have been tough to then try to face your conference foe.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. We're we're in a tough stretch right now. So we uh that game was at Mesa, and then we've we actually traveled again this weekend down to uh Pueblo and and Alamos to play uh CSU Pueblo and and uh Adam State. So just a tough stretch in our season. Fortunately, we're back uh for a few weeks after this, so um guys can um get back into more of a normal routine. But um yeah, two Florida Southern and Tampa, two great programs and uh really good teams. And um, you know, it's just we talked about it at the beginning of the year, you know, just try to make sure your business is taken care of ahead of time so you're not things aren't piling up on you when we get to these stretches. You know, we we try to like give them a heads up that this stretch is coming. You know, obviously they have the whole calendar and the of all the practices and travel and everything. But um, you know, we really just try to stress to them, you know, as early and as often as we can about just staying on top of homework, staying on top of just their their personal lives and everything. And and uh just so when these things, these periods come up, that they're not they're not gonna be overly stressed and and uh overwhelmed, and uh, especially academics, especially the younger guys, right? That's uh job, but you know, the freshman just kind of getting into that routine and understanding how how uh little time you have when you travel, right? It might seem like you have a lot, but you just you just don't, or you're you know, you're not in that kind of uh study schoolwork mindset, maybe if you're on the road.
SPEAKER_04And so uh you know, that's and then especially with time changes, you know, even if it's just a couple hours that that messes with you. And then Danny, I just looked at their schedule when he said that this weekend they're two two games in a row. It's just like Colorado Mesa earlier against Rockhurst and then Quincy. They play uh Westminster plays Colorado's uh Colorado State University Pueblo Friday at three, and then 10 a.m. they're playing Adam State the next day.
SPEAKER_06It's crazy.
SPEAKER_04So let's switch a little up, coach. There's one player that I've actually really enjoyed, several of your players, but I'll I'll mention one, and that's your goalie, Jacob Miller. He's been really impressive to me this year. Are there other players that have surprised you, especially maybe some of the freshmen or whatever that have come out this year that um have really contributed, whether they're showing on the stats or not, that you you think, wow, I'm I'm so it's been a pleasant thing to see?
SPEAKER_01Um, you know, we've had a couple of freshmen attackmen that um have kind of you know, maybe not been major contributors. Like Luke Solstrop's been a really solid starter for us from the get-go. Um he's he's a really crafty, smart player. Um, but we've got a couple other guys. Um, you know, Nick Kaufman, who's been battling some injuries, so he hasn't played a lot, but he's he's a heck of a player. He's um, you know, when he's in practice, he's been doing a great job. Um couple of the other younger guys, Keenan Knopp, Peyton Long Necker. You know, some young freshmen that uh they're getting a little time here and there, and they're just doing uh they're they're good players. Like, and it's just one of those things where you just got to find room to get them on the field. Um, another freshman Cam Rossi, um, a local guy from here. He's uh, you know, he's just a you know big athlete, really good player, kind of figuring it out as he goes. And uh, you know, but he's he's not afraid. He's uh never hasn't backed down from from anybody. You know, it's we uh we asked these Drew some long poles and we asked him how uh how he uh how if he can handle dodging a pole, and he said he'll dodge anybody that's in front of him. So you know, you like that much. Uh he's been he's been a great addition and uh you know fun to watch. So you know great, that's great. Yeah, I think it's awesome. They the best thing about him is they don't respect anybody, and the worst thing about him is they don't respect anybody.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_01It's definitely uh been the case in a lot of ways.
SPEAKER_04All right, I I'm gonna switch it up a little bit here. Um, we recently found out that you've got another team coming into the RMAC. Yeah, Concordia Irvine. So what do you think of that?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're excited about that. Um, really good team, really solid uh program already in place. Um Jesse Foss does a great job out there, and uh, you know, they're gonna be a strong team. They they got a great recruiting base. Jesse's part of uh West Coast Stars, uh, which is you know pretty good pretty much the top program, club program out west. So yeah, you know he's gonna have uh a lot of in on some top recruits. And so I expect those guys to be really competitive right off the bat. And uh, you know, it's great for the RMAC, right? We've got uh you know, they're joining, and then uh we've got some, you know, we've got a couple other teams that are in in motion. And uh that's great.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I love it. That's Danny and I were talking about that when we mentioned Concordia Irvine on the podcast several weeks ago. And all I said was, I would love to see the Armac get to at least six teams, if not more, because I think that helped one, it helps your travel schedule, right? I mean, you still got a little bit of far ways to go. You're out on the west coast there, and they still got a long way to go, even Salt Lake to to Irvine or or down to Colorado. But it does, I think it just is gonna be better for a conference to have six teams or more.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And there's there's a lot of talk about AQs coming into D2 starting in uh the 24, 25 year. And uh, but we'd have to be at six teams for that. And so to me, that's that's huge. I think everybody, you know, the RMAT commissioner and all the ADs, I think they understand the importance of that just because it would take a lot of the burden off the travel, right? Yeah, right now, you know, we have to travel and be aggressive with our scheduling because that's the only way into the tournament, right? So that large bids. And so that's why we have to go and try to get as many of these top 20 teams. And and you know, if we have a chance getting in, it's gonna be because we beat some of these top 20, top 15 teams. And so, you know, having an AQ would take some of that burden off. You could maybe focus more on teams that would return the game, you know, give us some home more home games and and relieve some of that burden of the travel. So that would be a huge, huge thing for all of like Western lacrosse or Western D2 lacrosse, I should say. And uh, you know, along with that, I think it would probably encourage a lot of ADs to get on board. Because right now, I think one of the biggest sticking points for a lot of ADs from what I'm hearing is is uh there's not like a real uh a great path to the NCAA tournament, right? It's really difficult. You got to spend a lot of money, you got to do travel. Um, and so having a more clear path, um, I think would encourage a lot of a lot of ADs to get on board. Because there's a lot of schools out west, and you know, the whole GNAC conference in the Northeast, they they pretty much have uh dropped football over the last 10 years. And uh a lot of those, most of those schools have have more women's teams than they have men's teams right now. So, you know, there's opportunity there, and uh, along with you know, Concordia's conference and uh along with the rest of the RMAC. So, you know, it could happen pretty fast if uh I think if these the NCAA kind of proves the AQs and we move in that direction.
SPEAKER_06That's interesting because you know Kevin and I have spoken about to other coaches about the AQs, and I said I think it's coming, but I didn't think it was gonna come that soon. You're talking about 23-24 season? 24-25. 24-25.
SPEAKER_01I think it's the beginning of the cycle. They have to the NCA does every four years, I think. Well, it is every four years, and I think it was 24-25. We talked about it at the IML CA convention. Um sounds like there's a lot of support for it. Um, women's across uh is in the same boat. Division two, women's across is in the same boat. Um they've kind of added enough teams, and and I guess there was an NCA study that uh was done and said men's and women's uh division two across of the two sports that have the worst ratio of of teams to to uh number of teams in the tournament. And so expanding the tournament and and opening up AQ sounds like the uh the next step and and one of the priorities for the NCA from from what I'm hearing.
SPEAKER_04So I'll be the butt um yeah, I'm I'm chomping at the bit now. I mean, I that would just make the whole season more exciting for me. And and we'd have more content for the podcast, Danny. I'm not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and then you have like at-large bids too, you know. So that kind of makes the whole it opens it up, like coach said. It just opens the things up, and I'm for the AQs. I mean, we I think we have enough teams. I know it's it has to do with conferences and teams and numbers, and but there's what how many 74 division one schools?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think it's it might even be a 76, 77, somewhere up there. And I know a couple schools came on this year, a couple more next year. So it's it's a yeah.
SPEAKER_04So we're uh D2's at 75 right now, and I think by the end of 2024, 2025, you're gonna be up over 80 unless some other schools move to D1. So it I I mean, you we've got the teams, and I I think Danny, what you said too with not not AQs and then some at-large bids, because there are teams that deserve to be in the tournament that don't get in only because it's six and six in the region.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I agree. You know, every year there's always that one team that feels like they got the snub, right? They had a good they had a good season, they played big opponents, they did well, and the algorithm said, you know, your strength of schedule was one point lower than uh team A, you know, and just it's algorithms are are pretty much uh making the the rules.
SPEAKER_04And I and I think you were what you said, coach, is exactly right for the RMAC. I mean, talk about a boon for your conference because you said it all. It would lessen your travel, it would make it, it would make it more equitable for an RMAC team to try to get into the tournament if they had an AQ. Because I would love to see that. I would love to see a Westminster or Colorado Mesa get into the tournament and see what they can do because you got you have good teams, and you guys can compete against the best. You have shown that this year, and so has Colorado Mesa. So it's only deserving to be in the tournament.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, and it's it's the the current setup's tough. You know, you lose, you know, if you're a team that maybe improves as the year goes on, but you lost a an early season game or something, you know, you that could get you leave you out of the tournament, right? So you're not really, you know, it's it's tough to kind of reward teams maybe that are playing their best lacrosse at the end of the year. Um, you know, and those are the teams that generally make the runs, right? So it's uh, you know, yeah, an AQ system to me, it you know, not only would it allow teams to not, you know, get knocked out just because of an early season loss or two, but uh, you know, kind of level the play field a little bit, you know, and and uh, you know, we have this burden of travel and playing multiple games in a weekend and and uh you know, just everything that goes along with it. And it's uh, you know, it kind of gave us an equal shot at the tournament. So um, you know, and then like I said, the expansion piece of it as well would be uh, you know, really encouraging to uh AD. So um yeah, so I think it's it's something hopefully the you know I think the NCA's on board. Hopefully that that's right and we'll get it done. I hope so too.
SPEAKER_06I hope so too. I I like the idea.
SPEAKER_04All right, coach. Well, all I can say is once again you've set the bar high for every other coach to come on here. We really appreciate you coming back on. It's been too long having you from being on here back, way back in I think August of 2021. So really appreciate it, and it was great catching up with you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, appreciate it, guys. And uh hope you guys have a great rest of the season. Enjoy it, and uh it should be fun, fun uh last half of the season here.
SPEAKER_06Thanks, Coach Kerwin, Westminster Griffiths. We appreciate so much you're taking the time tonight. Good luck the rest of the season, and uh we'll get you back on next year. We'll talk some more. What do you say? Sounds great. Yeah, thank you guys.
Games to watch
SPEAKER_04All right, Danny. Last week was crazy. What games uh are you gonna watch this week?
SPEAKER_06Last week was crazy, but you know what? That's what we live for, Kev. That's it's weeks like that that we just uh we just love to talk about. There was just so much to talk about. But games this week, and you know, Kev, we're into conference play now. And conference games, we're in the middle of season, towards the back half of the season, passing the final quarter pole. So a lot of these conference games really have a lot of implications on on a lot of different teams and in and every single conference. One game that I like this week to watch is uh St. Leo and Florida Southern. You mean St. Leo against Emory Riddle? I mean Emory Riddle, my bad. So if uh St. Leo has been on a nice roll, they look good, they're playing well. Big win last week. If they can win against a good Emory Riddle team, I think you might see uh the Lions in the Sunshine State Conference tournament. I think they they're they're they're poised to like make a move. So that's a game I like.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so we'll continue uh with the Sunshine State Conference uh uh theme because I've got Florida Southern Tampa on Saturday. And it's really Florida Southern's got Tampa and then they've got Rollins on Wednesday, the twelfth. Florida Southern, we haven't talked about much since the beginning of the season after their losses to Anderson and Limestone. But they have dominated in their game since then. They haven't played teams to the level of Tampa and Rollins. So this is their real test and their chance to really make a move in their conference.
SPEAKER_06Florida Southern has been quietly playing really, really good ball. There's been so much other stuff going on. The Sunshine State Conference a little bit now with Tampa and Rollins making a move, and then St. Leo looking good and Florida Southern. Florida Southern. Exactly. Nobody's talking about them. Watch out for Florida Southern. They're still in the hunt, Kev. Yes, they are still in the hunt, and they're good enough to pull stuff off, and what happens. Exactly. All right, who else do you have? I have Mercy and Frostburg battling ECC, Kev. That's a big game. I think it has national implications for both teams, and it has big time conference implications, home field advantage and a bye and all of that stuff. So I think those two teams are going to go at it.
SPEAKER_04I totally agree. I had that one down on my list as well. That's on Friday. Another ECC matchup happens on Saturday, and that's Roberts Wesleyan against Malloy. Malloy sits at 7-4 this year so far. They are 2-0 in conference. Roberts Wesleyan, same kind of record. They're 7-3 and they're 2-1 in conference. This is a good matchup.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Coach Don and the boys. He's been getting, I told you, Kevin, give this man a year or two and watch what happens. And this is anybody's game. I think so. This is a pick'em game to me. I think so.
SPEAKER_04This is a pick'em game to me. I I agree. I agree. And where are they? They're at Roberts Wesleyan. So let's see what Coach Delfino can dial up there. Okay, I've got a I've got a few to run down here. On Saturday, there's a couple of Saturday, April 8th. Yep, Saturday, April 8th. Got a couple GLVC games. U Indy against Meryville. And the reason I say this is can UI continue its dominance in this conference, or can Meryville and Coach Stark look like Rollins or Wingate and pull off the win. That's gonna be, I don't know. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06U Indy looks very good.
SPEAKER_04They do. They do. I think UINY can win, but I said that about other teams. Here's the other one I really am interested in. Rockhurst against Lewis. Lewis ranked again. They were ranked last week, and they're ranked again. They're number 19 in the U.S. ILA poll. They'll want to keep that ranking. They're 0-1 in the conference, but they're 7-3 overall. Rockhurst sits at 6-3, and they're 1-0 in the conference. And Rockhurst has quietly been climbing and playing well in this conference. That is going to be a I've got also on Saturday Wingate against Anderson. It seems like we're talking about Wingate a lot lately, but this is key. Anderson had Wingate's number last year. And they beat him pretty handily. And like you said, Wingate's going to have this game circled. I think Anderson will need Cam Week's back if they if they are going to win. I think they've got the firepower and the D without them, but they just don't seem the same team. So we'll see how that goes.
SPEAKER_06And the Bulldogs are home, Captain. They're tough at home. They're tough, they are.
SPEAKER_04Yes, they are. Here's another one, Danny, on Saturday, April 8th. It's the Battle of Canton, Ohio. Walt against Malone. Let's just start this rivalry going, man. That's what I want to see. Let's get this rivalry going.
SPEAKER_06Who's gonna be the Canton Kings, man? That's what I want to know. We'll find out. We will, we will. I think I need the nodes. They'll call them the Kings of Canton.
SPEAKER_04They gotta come up with some good trophy for that. You know, that'd be awesome. Yeah, they should. They should. Okay, I've got one more, Danny, and that's the next calves foot.
SPEAKER_06Like a big calves foot, like something like that.
SPEAKER_04One more, one more that I've got on my list, and that's next Wednesday, April 12th, and that's Chestnut Hill against Wilmington. This has been a good game for the last couple years. The Griffins stand at 5-2, and though and the Wildcats are only 2-4, but their first four games were against top 10 opponents. Could Wilmington be like a flagler repeat here? They had such a tough out-of-conference schedule. Did that get them ready to play the usual number one team in their conference?
SPEAKER_06That's interesting. Let's see. Where's where's Chestnut Hill? Okay.
SPEAKER_02Hmm.
SPEAKER_06I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Wilmington hasn't been playing that well, Cap. They won their last two games. I mean, when you when you're a team like Wilmington, now we saw them last year and they they almost made it to the tournament. It's because they lost they lost in their conference championship to Chestnut Hill. They beat Chestnut Hill in the regular season, but they lost to him in the conference championship tournament. Wilmington didn't get off to the great start, but they played a really tough out of conference.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Yeah, they did.
SPEAKER_04Top ten teams, man. So you know, I I I don't know. I think this is a pick'em for me. I think it's a pick'em for me.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and again, I don't know what to say because like I said, Wilmington hasn't been I don't know. I'm shocked at Wilmington this year a little bit. I expected them to be I guess a little bit more, I guess.
SPEAKER_04I had a I had a thought that they would win one of those first four games. I didn't say that they'd win all of them. I mean, look at who they played. I mean, it was Tampa, Mercy Hearst, Pace, Mercy. All the top comment teams. Top five. They're all top five. Except for except for pace.
SPEAKER_06Except for pace. So what?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, exactly. That's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_06I mean, it's not they're that good too.
SPEAKER_04So I think I think who's home?
SPEAKER_06Chestnut Hill.
SPEAKER_04Chestnut Hill is home. Chestnut Hill is home. I'm going with Chestnut Hill. Okay. I think I have to give a nod to Chestnut Hill just because they're home and they have a better record, but I'm gonna go the opposite way. I say Wilmington upsets them. I think Wilmington, I think this is another flagler. They've got they've they've toughened themselves up and they did that to play Chestnut Hill.
SPEAKER_06Well speaking of Flagler, they play shorter. They're gonna play they're gonna have another win.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the the game we want to wait for is when they play Lander. That's the game I'm waiting for.
SPEAKER_06Alright. Boy, division two is heating up, Kev. I love it. I love it. I love it. Me too. This was a great week.
Player's Spotlight
SPEAKER_04Okay. It is that time. The time for the player spotlight.
SPEAKER_06My favorite part, Kev. My favorite part.
SPEAKER_04Well, I'll tell you what, Danny, we are not gonna get his name wrong this time. No, we won't. Yeah, no. No, we won't. Otherwise, we'll be getting a message from a uh a fan of ours and a fan of his very quickly, I think. You know, it seems like we've been mentioning him almost every week lately. And there's probably a damn good reason for that. He is, if not the best, one of the best D Medis in D2 right now. And he proved that again this past week with eight ground balls and one caused turnover in his last game. So let's just welcome him in, the twenty twenty two US ILA first team All American. And he's headed there again, I think. Kyle Bach of the U Indy Greyhounds.
SPEAKER_00Hey Kyle, how are we doing? Thank you for having me on.
SPEAKER_06Kyle Bash, the short stick D mid man. My my middle son was a short stick D mid, and I know what it's like to be on that side of the ball. You guys don't get a lot of love, but we're gonna show you a lot of love. My man, you are just absolute beast out there. I love watching you play. You might be my favorite player to watch in all of Division II. I really enjoy your playing.
SPEAKER_00Well, thank you. Yeah, I really appreciate it. But I mean, a lot of the credit goes to those close defensemen behind me. Like without those guys and such a great unit, like we all play together. So they really help me out, and we we all just kind of compliment each other well.
SPEAKER_04So I I think you're being a little humble. I think you set them up. I think that's what it is. That's what I think they're just gonna say, too. That's what I say. Before we go any farther, before we go any farther, we've already screwed up. I've said your last name one way, Bosch. Danny said it bash. What is it?
SPEAKER_00It is actually Bosch, but uh no worries about it. It gets messed up all the time, even at our game. Sometimes, if I get like in a goal or assist, they'll say Kyle Bash, and Mops in the crowd are just like it's Bosch, it's Bosch.
SPEAKER_04But from now on, you can call me Kevin Stenstorm or Steinstrom. You don't have to get it right at all, okay?
SPEAKER_06And don't even call me because I'll just mess up anyway. But we promise no more messing up, Mrs. Bosch. We promise no more. It's Kyle Bosch. Yes.
SPEAKER_02All good, dude.
SPEAKER_06You you indie is just falling out. What's it like in the locker room right now with the Greyhounds?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like uh I I mean it's just it's just been good right now. The vibe's high there. Um, you know, we're we've been playing really well together. The chemistry is really good, and you know, everyone's just kind of rolling along with it. Um, you know, we try to improve each year as a program. I think we're doing a good job of that. And our goal is the national championship, right? So in order to do that, we like have our little steps. So, like, first win conference championship, make the tournament, and then you know, from once you make the tournament, it's anybody's championship to win. So that's the goal.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and you guys don't back down either. I mean, you're out of conference. I mean, your conference is difficult enough as it is, but you you indie and your coaches set you up for a tough out-of-conference when you play teams just get on the list. I mean, you start off with Lake Erie, that's a team you play fairly often, but Westminster, Seton Hill, Montevallo, Lemoyne, Mercyhurst, you've got Wingate later in the year, and then you've got the in-conference. I mean, there is no rest for you. And I'm I'm sure that's done on purpose by your coaches.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, they they believe in us, and I mean, that's a good thing. They want to test our team and play some hard hour conference schedule. And then, like you said, our conference is pretty tough as it is. So it's been a lot of traveling, a lot of hard games, but I think it's been going well so far this year for us.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so let's just turn to you a little bit. You even though you're probably one of the most modest kids we've had on here. No, they're all been modest, they've all been great. I think let's just talk about your position. I really think D middies are the unsung heroes on the field there, in my opinion. You don't get talked about enough. They talk about the close defense, and of course they're gonna talk about all the goals that the attackmen get to score. But it's your position that I think really sets up the defense on how successful they can be during a game. So tell us why you love that position.
SPEAKER_00Um, I just like that, you know, it's it's gritty. It's like it's not easy. It's like I think you said earlier, it's one of the hard positions to play. Um, you just gotta have like a motor on you. You gotta always be going and going hard because I mean you're the ones getting dodged on every every play, right? The other guys, they're not gonna dodge on poles if they don't have to. So you just gotta be on your best game every every game. And I don't know, I like that. I like that competitive aspect of it.
SPEAKER_06Let me ask you this. Were you a D MIDI in high school, or did you play both ways?
SPEAKER_00I just I just kind of played both ways in high school.
SPEAKER_04So, how much do you like the transition game and being able to score a per help with an assist now and then, which you do?
SPEAKER_00I I I love the transition game. That's honestly that's a good motivation to take the ball away, you know. Take take the ball, bring it down, get an assist. Yeah, that's a really cool feeling. So that's that's a good motivation for sure.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, reminds me of your son, Danny. That's all I'm gonna say. Yeah, he loved it, also. He was good at that. He was gritty and he loved doing it just like you, Kyle. I love to see that. So, how does a kid from Ada, Michigan? Started in lacrosse.
SPEAKER_00Honestly, we're so where I grew up, my high school was Force Hill Central, and it's actually a very big lacrosse community. Like we made we made three state championships in a row in Michigan, and wow, and uh both my brothers played, my dad played in college, so I just kind of started playing when I was very young, and I got lucky that our public school was very good at lacrosse. We had a lot of D1 commits on the team, and yeah, I've just been playing some competitive lacrosse since a young age. So I guess I I just got lucky with that.
SPEAKER_06Did you play any other sports?
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, I played football and basketball as well.
SPEAKER_06Oh, wow, good. What position did you play in football? Uh, I was a wide receiver. Wide receiver, all right. All right, cool, man. You a multi-sport athlete. College coaches love those kids. So now you get to you, Indy. You're at the Greyhounds, and they say, you know what? We're gonna put you on the defensive side of the ball. What was your first reaction?
SPEAKER_00Um, you know, well, freshman year, when they said that to me, I was just excited that I got to play. You know, I had no idea what I was expecting coming in. Uh really like one of the only schools I talked to. So I just kind of going along for the ride, and it just kind of worked out. And I just had to learn how to play some team defense and kind of took off from there.
SPEAKER_04So let me ask you that. You just I was gonna ask you why you, Wendy, but I'm gonna flip that question. Why was it one of the only schools you talked to? Because I would think, based on your skill set, you would have a lot of different programs looking at you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't really know. Um, I mean, I started playing like so. I played my club team was the Juice Cherries. I don't know if you've heard of them. Um, but I played for them and uh I started my junior year, so maybe I got a little late into that. But um, yeah, I just Coach Grimes found me at a tournament in Baltimore and was pretty much one of the only coaches I talked to, and then the only visit I took was here, and then I just committed here.
SPEAKER_04Just you know, it was a match made in heaven, as they say. Yeah, and I'll tell you what, I guarantee that Coach Grimes is patting himself on the back every day. Yeah, hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know what I'm saying? He's like, Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I hope at the end, at the at the end of every season, Kyle's like, Coach, I need more money. You gotta find more money for me. Coach, you gotta find some more money for me.
SPEAKER_04So so we we know that coach Coach Grimes and Coach Docks love you at U Indy. What does Undie mean to you?
SPEAKER_00Um, I mean, to me, it's just kind of where I feel like I went from like a kid into a man. I figured out why I wanted to do it in my life. I want to go into sports business, so that was a big step for me. Um, and just like my best friends here, like I can't even go into enough detail about like how much these guys mean to me here. It's like the coolest feeling in the world having like 50 best friends on one team. So yeah, I just say where I became a man and where I'm at my brothers for life. So yeah, kind of cliche, but it's the truth, though.
SPEAKER_06It will be a brotherhood for life. You'll see, man. You're gonna be hanging out with these guys and they're gonna get you jobs and you're gonna get your friends jobs. You'll see how it works, man. It's a pretty cool brotherhood, and it's a small community, Kyle. So, you know, they say, Oh, you played lacrosse, go see Jim Witherspoon. He'll he played lacrosse at Cornell. He'll get, you know, next thing you know, you got the job, kid. You know. So now you're a graduate student. What is your major?
SPEAKER_00So sports. I was sports management in my undergrad, and in my master's right now, I'm doing masters of management. Well, how's that been? It's been good. Um, it was a little bit of a change going from sports management to the business program. Like, usually all my classes involve like some sports aspect before, but I think I've adapted pretty well, and my roommate and I are in the same classes too, so that's very helpful. We can kind of help each other out, but yeah, it's been good.
SPEAKER_04That's that's awesome. It's great to see you continuing your your graduate degree. Do you have anything, any plans for afterwards yet?
SPEAKER_00Um, not anything specific yet. Um trying to get into sports business, and luckily Indianapolis has like a lot of opportunities for sports businesses. I've been in contact with some companies and some of the professional teams around here trying to get into like a marketing role or sales role. So I'm just kind of playing with that right now, trying to see how that goes. And yeah, just trying to get my name out there.
SPEAKER_04Very good, very good. So a pretty smart kid getting your master's and all at such a young age. I had to wait a while. I had to, you know, get some uh get some things under my belt, like a little work in the navy, and then I finally got the the gumption to try to get a master's. So I don't know how though, you know, getting your master's is a little bit different than being in the firing round. What do you think, Danny?
SPEAKER_06Oh, that's rapid fire in that one, Danny. That's fire if I've ever heard one, man. It's my new app. All right, here we have Kyle Bosch, everybody from Ada, Michigan, short stick D Middy. He's been a 22 U 2022. Let me say that again. 2022 USI ILA Nike All-American first team, Nike All-American second team in the 21. He was a two-time GLBC specialist of the year. He's a two-time all GLBC first team. And you know what, Kevin? Even more, even more, this kid is unbelievable. Two-time academic all GLBC. So not only is he balling on the field, he's balling in the classroom too. So Kyle Bosch, my favorite player to watch in all of D2 right now, next to my son. You're in the firing round. Here we go. Number one, mom's best meal.
SPEAKER_00Mom's best meal. Oh, I'd say probably just a steak. My mom makes a really good steak. I'm the girl at home. All right, mom's steak. Morning bird or night owl? Oh, night owl, absolutely.
SPEAKER_06Night owl. Night owl. Okay, you have a problem. Favorite midnight snack.
SPEAKER_00Probably a bowl of cereal.
SPEAKER_06I love bowls of cereal, man. I love cereal. I can't get enough of it. What's your favorite cereal?
SPEAKER_00Oh uh, I mean, frosted flakes are the same frosted flakes, you're right.
SPEAKER_06He's my man. I love this kid. Play PlayStation or Xbox? Xbox all day. All day, every day, and twice on Sunday. Runs, runs or lifts? Lifts. Favorite TV show.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, all time, probably The Office, but right now I've been ripping Ted Lasso. Okay. Sounds good. Good choices. Favorite cartoon as a kid. Oh, SpongeBob. Absolutely. SpongeBob.
SPEAKER_06I know. Favorite football team. Chicago Bears. Chicago Bears. Favorite quarterback.
SPEAKER_04Look at his background. Look at look in the background of the bottom wall right there.
SPEAKER_06I see it. And he's a Blackhawks fan, is too, I bet. Absolutely. All Chicago teams, yep.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So who's your favorite football player? Justin Fields. Absolutely. He's the future for Chicago, hopefully. We'll see. Okay. And who's your favorite hockey player? Unfortunately, it hurts to say right now, but Patrick Kane with that trait.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Okay. What's your favorite kind of music? What kind of music do you like to listen to, Kyle?
SPEAKER_00Um, a little bit of everything, but the main ones I'd say rap and country.
SPEAKER_06Rap and country. Couldn't be two more opposites, right? Exactly.
SPEAKER_00All right. So what was the last song you listened to? Um, last song. I think it was Me to Me by Morgan Wallen. I don't know that one, man.
SPEAKER_06I don't know that one. It's a new one. Okay. If you could play a musical instrument, what would it be and why?
SPEAKER_00Um I think I'd probably go. Hmm, that's a good question. I think I'd go electric guitar because a nice like electric guitar solo is it's that's pretty badass. Like, come on.
SPEAKER_06And you get all the chicks, you're right up in front of the stage, right? All the chicks. Something like that, yeah. Something like that. Okay. Favorite class at UIndy in the five years you've been there.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, probably I took a sports PR class that I thought was really cool.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Who was the best professor you had at U Indie?
SPEAKER_00Dr. Jim Russell.
SPEAKER_06What's that what's Dr. Russell do? What's what's he teach?
SPEAKER_00Uh, he was my supply chain management professor, and he was just a really good guy. And I still keep in touch with him. And like, even if I got like an award or like we had a big win or something, he'll shoot me an email saying congrats. So he's just a really good dude.
SPEAKER_06Oh, what a great guy. Now you gotta shoot him an email and tell him he's on the podcast, man. Okay, who's the funniest guy on the Greyhounds lacrosse squad?
SPEAKER_00I'd probably say I gotta give two here. I can't go just one. I think Sam Arston for number one, and right next to him is Ryan Heslat, both the D middies. They're both hilarious. Okay, sounds great.
SPEAKER_04He's keeping that in his own little family there. You can see that, Danny. Wait till he set see what he says for the next one.
SPEAKER_06Okay, who is the one kid on the team you'd never let date your sister?
SPEAKER_00Hmm. Mikey Sinquina. Absolutely Mikey Sinquina, number 20. Okay, he's even marked his number.
SPEAKER_04You know, that's all I'm gonna see now when I watch you in. When I see number 20, I'm like, there he is.
SPEAKER_06Mikey. Kyle's got a little smirk on his face, Mikey. Just let you know, kid. All right. Best and most favorite lacrosse memory.
SPEAKER_00I'd say winning conference championship in 2021 because we were at playing at Linenwood and it was under the lights, and it was just a really, really good game. They had a really good squad. So I think that was a phenomenal game.
SPEAKER_04That was a phenomenal game. That was Kyle was one of the first games we talked about on this podcast.
SPEAKER_02Really?
SPEAKER_04That's right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely.
SPEAKER_06It was about that time. Yeah. Okay, last but not least, Kyle, give us your best impression of coach.
SPEAKER_00Probably it's I'm I'm gonna go like halftime speech here. He'd say, boys were shooting too much right into a stick, gotta figure it out. And defense, you start playing aggressive, but he always always throws the figure it out there in his Canadian accent. Okay.
SPEAKER_06All right. Let's figure it out. Kyle, you did great.
SPEAKER_00And this yeah, thank you so much for having me on, guys. Really appreciate all you guys are doing for uh D2 Lacrosse. I know a lot of the players on the team listen, a lot of parents, all pretty much all the parents on our team listen. So we really appreciate you guys.
SPEAKER_06Well, we really appreciate you and what you're doing in Division II. Like I said, Kyle, my son was a short stick D middy. I know what that position's all about. I love watching aggressive, quick, um, smart D-mids like you, like what you've been doing. I've been saying to Kevin all year, I was like, did you see what Kyle did last night? Did you see what Kyle did last week? It seems like you're just in the middle of every play. And just I can't thank you enough for coming on the show and coming out of study hall, mom. He's only out of study hall for like 10 minutes. And don't forget he likes steak. So when he comes home, he's got to get that nice juicy steak. This mom got a shout out on the podcast. Kyle, you've been a great guest tonight. We wish you nothing but continued success, young man. You got a couple of big games coming up. And uh, I think we'll probably see you towards the uh NCAA tournament, I have a feeling.
SPEAKER_00I hope so. That's that's the plan for sure. But yeah, thanks again. Really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_04All right, Danny. Having Kyle Bosch, Kyle Bosch, Bosch, Bosch on the program was awesome.
Shout Outs
SPEAKER_04Kyle Bosch.
SPEAKER_06What a great kid, man. He's a great player, Kevin. I love watching him play. Great kid. He's got the world by the but he's got the world by the you know what's man. He's about to he's getting his master's. I'm I'm sure the I'm sure the university's paying for it. And uh he's gonna be out in the real world soon. He's gonna have his master's degree, and he he's on a great team that has a chance of uh getting a national championship, Kevin. And he's a big part of why they are where they are. 100. One of the best short stick D-mitties in the country. He's gotta be a first team All-American this year.
SPEAKER_04I agree. There's there's no other way to say that. If he's not, there's something wrong with with who votes. I I can't, I'm sure he will be.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he's a he's a good kid.
SPEAKER_04I'm glad he came on. I am too. Okay. Now to close it out, though, you got any shout-outs for this week?
SPEAKER_06Oh, Kev, there's a ton of shout-outs going out this week. My first shout out goes to Nick Shannon. He's a defenseman from Boynton Beach, Florida. Plays for the Florida Southern Mox, Kev. He had three cause turnovers and four ground balls against Lynn, and six cause turnovers and seven ground balls versus Westminster. He had himself a week, Nick Shannon. Who do you got?
SPEAKER_04Okay. I've got a shout out. It's a North Greenville goalie, Joe Amici. 79.2% save percentage against Anderson with 19 saves. The kid was a wall.
SPEAKER_06He balled out. Speaking of goalies, I got one for you. How about a shout out to Brock Alila? Goalie for Rockhurst. Ready for this, Kevin? He had 21 saves in his first collegiate start and a 9-8 overtime win at Meryville. Shout out to Brock Alila. Great job, young man.
SPEAKER_04What a way to get going, huh?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's a great day.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I got another shout out. I've got a shout-out just happened today. A shout out to Georgian Court for a great win over Wilmington, 15-13 today. I didn't get to watch it. I saw the score as I was waiting, as we were getting ready to record this podcast on Tuesday evening. They led wire to wire and they were up eight, three at half. They won the face-off battle 20 to 11 and ground balls 49 to 36, Danny. Shout out to some of their players. Daniel Burnham, five goals, one assist. And Michael Vantreska and Vincent Burns both had hat tricks. That gets Georgian Court to 6-5. And that is a critical conference win for Mickey Hovert. Great, great win.
SPEAKER_06Nice shout out, Kev. I like that one. I got another shout-out. Hey, we're on the goalie. We're on a goalie run tonight, okay? Yeah. Goalie John Capone for the Wingate Bulldogs had a career high 19 saves against the win against number four Lenore Ryan the other night. If you saw the game, he was amazing.
SPEAKER_04Okay. My last shout-out, I think, is one of yours, so I'll let you take it.
SPEAKER_06Well, Kev, you know me. I was I have no life, so I was watching the Tampa Rollins game the other night. And during a lull in the action, the two announcers mentioned in the crease. And the one announcer didn't know about it. He was like, I had heard about it, but I had never listened. But they really gave it, you know, a nice little talk about the podcast and what we do. And then they said that we were two old lacrosse dads. That was the only thing wrong with everything that they said. I agree. No, no, no, no. It was it was right. That's the problem. It was right. So hey, I didn't know who they were, so I shot Coach Lewis an email. And it's uh the two announcers for Rollins did a great job. Turns out they were fill-ins, Cap. They were pinch hitting. They were pinch hitting. They came in at the bottom of the ninth and pitch hit. Roy Hansen and James Cowan, two former uh Rollins players, short stick D mids. Okay. All conference D mids. Yeah. This is the what a night this is. It's about short stick D mids and goalies. Roy and James Cowan. Roy Hansen and James Cowan did a great, great job um calling the game. Like I said, two alumni. They stepped into filling spots by the normal announcers, both were short stick means and Coach Lewis, uh dubs Rollins. S S D M U. Short stick D video. So they gave out a big shout-out to the podcast. And hey, Roy and James, thank you so much. We really appreciate it. And you guys did a phenomenal job, much better than the Lenore Ryan guys. That's all I got to say.
SPEAKER_04I think they did a good job too. And I'm not just saying that because they gave us a shout-out, that they gave us a little ad on their thing. They also sent us a picture. They DM'd a picture of them both in the booth to our Instagram site, which was great to see. I loved it. I loved the interaction. It was fantastic.
SPEAKER_06So James, James better get on board this week and start listening avidly because he's the one who did it. I think Roy is the one. And he's got a brother on the team. Brent, yeah. Yeah. So thanks, fellas. We really appreciate it. And uh continue doing on what you're doing. You guys were pretty good. I really enjoyed you that night. It was a great game to watch, too.
SPEAKER_04Okay, and finally, just a little reminder for people on this podcast to check out our sponsor, Scorebreak. You can check them out at www.scorebreak.io.
SPEAKER_06Kevin, before we go tonight, we have something really special to to uh talk about with our uh listeners tonight. We have two Division II uh college ball players, lacrosse players that have been named to the Tawarton list, the finals. Okay. And I think we have to shout these two guys out. I think you're right. I think you're right. The first one is Danny Xabia of Pace. He's a great player. He's a beast out there. He has been balling out all year. He's been named to the Tawarton list. And Willie Greco, Wingate Bulldogs, All-American, all-everything attack man um out of out of Georgia. Uh he's been named to the Tuarton list, too. So congratulations, fellas. That's a huge honor, and I wish you nothing but luck.
SPEAKER_04And that's a great way to end this episode. So with that, Danny, that's a wrap. That's a wrap, guys.
