SPEAKER_04

Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's La Cross. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stentrom, and with me as always is the man with a 4.85 Yelp Review, Danny Moran.

SPEAKER_02

That's a good one. Does Vidovnik give you that one?

SPEAKER_05

Ding, ding, ding.

SPEAKER_04

He's the man. He's the man. We have to start doing, I guess I'm gonna have to put it in the show notes. Staff writer.

SPEAKER_02

Co-producer Joe Vidovnik. Let's give him a bell. Good job, Joe. I knew it was you, kid.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, you can pick him out. I've been I've been a little weak lately. That was a good one. That was a good one.

SPEAKER_02

He's a witty man.

SPEAKER_04

He is, he is.

SPEAKER_02

All right. How's it going tonight in Northern Virginia, Kat?

SPEAKER_04

Well, I'm not in Northern Virginia. I am turning into the road warrior. Um I uh over the weekend watching the games Friday night, I went down to Sarasota, Florida, a buddy of mine um in my first squadron ever, so back in the late 80s, early 90s. Back in 19, back in 19, none of your business. That's right. He he retired as a United pilot. So there was a big party from him. Some of my squadron mates were down. There was a good time. We flew back Saturday. I then left Sunday to come down here to Atlanta for a conference. Atlanta, baby. So I'm all over the place the next, it feels like for the next two months. I'm home for a little bit, then I'll be gone again, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But who cares about me? We have lacrosse to talk about.

SPEAKER_02

Hold on. Surprise? Guess whose birthday it is today? Me. Happy birthday, Mr.

SPEAKER_04

Moran.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, baby. We got some Beatles. Hold on, we gotta let Ringo do his thing. Break it down, Ringo. Give us some give us some beats. Come on, Ringo.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. It's bloody Ringo. It's bloody Ringo on the drums. Yeah, baby. 63 today.

SPEAKER_02

Can you believe it?

SPEAKER_04

Oh, 60, none of your business?

SPEAKER_02

63, but yeah, I was born in way back in 1990 business. Feel great, though. 63. I'm in good shape, kid. I feel good. Drinking my water, eat my smoothies, you know? Keep myself busy, climbing out of it.

SPEAKER_04

There's probably one vice you could get rid of, but I have this is too.

SPEAKER_02

So you know that's right. And you know what? God, God willing, we'll make it through that one. You know what I mean? But uh exactly. You know, it's good to, you know, acknowledge your day, I think. And um, to me, it was always just a day. But you know what? When you get to be 63, you start to be a little bit more grateful about those days.

SPEAKER_04

You know, saying, like, wow, ship around the sun, my friend.

SPEAKER_02

You know what? I'm grateful, Kev, because again, I have all ten fingers and all ten toes after working 40 plus years in the construction industry here in New York City.

SPEAKER_04

That's a big deal.

SPEAKER_02

Um, I'm in good shape. I can still climb in and out of lifts and up and down ladders and up and down stairs, just in shorter spurts now. You know what I mean? The marathon days are over. It's just short spurts. But hey, you know what? I feel good. I'm looking forward to another good year and uh another year lacrosse, maybe some travel this summer and uh and and and start living life, you know, like it should be lived.

SPEAKER_04

Well, I wish I had remembered it was your birthday. Why would I remember? I need to write it down and I didn't do it. But I from me to you, happy birthday, my friend.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you so much. I appreciate that.

Top 10 Roundup

SPEAKER_04

Now, let's move on to your top ten.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, Kev, what a week. What a week. More stuff going on in Division II, more good games and close games and upsets. And and uh after week nine, this is your round up. All right, Kev, here we go. Number one, Tampa beat Rollins 16 to 11. The Spartans are undefeated, Kev, at 11-0. They look phenomenal. They play number 14, St. Leo next, and I think that should be a good one. Number two, Adelphi. Uh they beat Southern New Hampshire 27 to 5, Kev.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It wasn't fair. I watched the first half. It just wasn't fair. A Delphi looks very, very, very good.

SPEAKER_04

Two different levels there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Do you know Adelphi has only given up eight goals in a game all year? They are just, I mean, we talk about their offense all the time. This year, their defense is crazy. So Adelphi's 10-0. They face St. A's next. Yeah. Which is, I think, a pretty big NE-10 matchup. Number three, Limestone, beat number 13, Newberry, 18-9. We'll talk about that game tonight. The Saints roll on 10-1 now, and they face a tough number 12 Anderson team coming up in sack play. So that should be a pretty good game. Number nine, Seton Hill, beat number eight Lewis in a spank down, Kev. A spank down. 17-9. Uh Seton Hill goes to 9-1. And they face Malone next. And not for nothing, Kev. In that old New York, you know, way to say not for nothing. They have a favorable schedule from here on out, Seton Hill.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and I'm not sure that helps them.

SPEAKER_02

You know, you could be right about that. I understand completely. No, but again, I don't see anybody in the GMAC kind of beating them. So they have a favorable schedule coming up. So number five, St. Aides. They needed overtime to beat unranked Assumption. It was 7-6. Uh St. A's goes to 6-0, and they face St. Michael's next. Number six, Flagler. They were off this week. Believe it or not. And they play UAH in Peach Belt Conference Play next game. Number seven, LR beat Emory and Henry 24-3. LR sits at 8-2, and they play Mars Hill in sack play. Number eight, Lewis, lost to number four, Seton Hill, 9-2. And they face Maryville in conference play. That should be a decent game. Yeah. We'll talk about that. Number nine, Pace beat St. Michael's rather handily, 18-6. The Setters go to 17-1, and they play AIC next in any 10 play. And number 10, Wingate, beat Lander 12-5. Held Lander, the defense held Lander to its lowest point total in like a year and a half. Only five goals though. The dogs go to 8-2, and they face Cataw next and should be a decent game. And that's your round up. All right, Kev, just a couple of quick uh scores to note. Emory Riddle beat Florida Tech in a close one, 12-10. Georgian Court beat Post. 14-10. That's uh that was a big one. That was a good game for Georgian Court. St. Leo beat Lynn. And they looked very good in the SSC St. Leo.

SPEAKER_04

Well, and here's what's interesting. That game was close for a while. And then St. Leo broke it open. And I was, you know, it would be a game I was going to turn to until St. Leo. I think it was like a five-goal difference in the end. So St. Leo came on strong at the end, and they're looking good.

SPEAKER_02

They're looking very good in the Sunshine State Conference. Northwood got another win this year week.

SPEAKER_04

I had that on my list.

SPEAKER_02

They beat Wheeling 14-12. That was probably a pretty decent game to watch.

SPEAKER_04

I watched the last quarter or so of that game because Northwood was up. Wheeling comes back. They're up by more than two. Wheeling comes back. It was, I don't know if it was tied, but it was within one goal. Wheeling had their chances. Northwood opened it up to a two-goal lead that 14-12, and then they held on. So good for them. And it was freezing cold in Michigan.

SPEAKER_02

I can only imagine. I can only imagine. Yeah, so those are just a couple of scores to note.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, the other one I had was Dominican beating Adam State 13-8. And the reason why I say that is we talked about I talked about it last time to see what Adam State was doing. Now I'll tell you, they lost. And maybe this is the optimist to me. They lost, but they're making it closer than when they've done in years past. So is this still building for what Coach wants? We'll have to wait and

Week in Review

SPEAKER_04

see. And uh and that I think kind of leads us, Danny, into our first game to talk about and we can review, which was back in the ARMAC, Colorado Mesa against Concordia University of Irvine. Pretty good game.

SPEAKER_02

Pretty good game, Kev. Mesa pulled it out 8-7. The Mavericks go to 6-2. Uh CUIs at 4-6. With that win, Colorado Mesa stays undefeated in RMAC. CUI goes to 3-3-2. Kind of like a slow start, a little bit by both teams kind of feeling each other out. Garcia was able to get Mesa on the board in the first after a slow start by both squads. Dylan Pless scored at the 209 mark of the first quarter. Then Logan Smith buried a biscuit for Mesa, and they led three zip after one. In the second quarter, Connor Jensen got the first of his two goals, giving the Mavs a 4-0 lead before Chad McFadden finally got CUI on the board. Jensen scored it again and made it 5-1 Mesa before Brady Galbraith buried one for CUI. Plus scored again and Mesa led 6-2 at half. Kind of felt like they were in control of that half.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. You know, looked like they were off with a 4-0 lead.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they looked like they were on their way to, you know, being a really, you know, taking up taking that game away from CUI early. But um each team in the third quarter only scored once.

SPEAKER_04

Both teams kind of That surprised me when I saw that in the box score.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they kind of settled in on defense and just, you know, went back and forth. And like I said, each team only scored one. It was seven and three Mesa after three. And then CUI's Jeremy Barnes sparked a three-goal run by the Golden Eagles. Brady McDonald scored for CUI, made it eight, seven Mesa with six minutes left. Uh McFadden hit post. I could have tied it for CUI. And uh here's what happened. CUI in the last two minutes had some chances, but they turned the ball over twice and they failed to clear once. And that's the way it ended in a tight game where where CUI came back in the second half and just gave gave Mesa everything they could handle. So Mesa was you know ranked number 20 going into that game. They won, but C UI gave them every bit that they could handle.

SPEAKER_04

And I will tell you, I didn't see the game, but I read I looked at the box score, I looked at the scoring and and the possession. CUI had the ball last with 20 seconds remaining. They got a shot off, but it was wide. That will tell you I mean, they still had a chance at the very end of the game. And a couple, like you said, the missed clear and whatnot. So what does that tell you about once again? CUI starts to get a pulse and a feel and an identity against the RMAC team's second time around. Look at they brought him to overtime in the RMAC championship last year and lost to Colorado Mesa. This year they get within one score last game regular season. Pretty interesting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's uh it's like kind of like a new rival, I think, a little bit in that RMAC, you know. So CUI is right in the middle of it still. I still think that they can do some damage maybe once the RMAC tournament starts. Definitely a team to keep their eye on because let me tell you something. Mesa is a is a good squad, six and two.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, three and oh in conference. But CUI, man, CUI was tough. They gave him a scare in that second half. I was impressed with CUI. Uh Jeremy Barnes had two goals for the Golden Eagles. Chad McFadden, Brody McDonald, uh Galbraith, and Matt Carese each with one. Cade Poe, 11 for 18 at the dot for CUI. He was phenomenal. Uh Colin O'Connor, seven ground balls, one cause turnover. And Daniel Yang between the pipes for the Golden Eagles with 12 saves. He had a pretty decent day. Yeah. Uh Dylan Pless for the Mesa Mavericks had two. Connor Jensen had two. You know where Connor Jensen's from?

SPEAKER_04

Where?

SPEAKER_02

Brentwood, Tennessee, in case you wanted to know. Uh Logan Smith had two. Uh, Eli Bibler, uh, Ryan Garcia each with one. Mike Edwards, six for 15 at the dot, struggled a little bit for Mesa. Shaden Shields, the AIC transfer, had himself a pretty good game. 13 saves and made some really, really good saves in that game. So Mesa, Mesa goes to 6-2, 3-0 in the Armac, and uh they're ranked number 20 in the country.

SPEAKER_04

So yeah, it'll be interesting to see as it as it goes forward. First in the Armac. This game kind of shows how tight it could get there. I think with really three teams, Westminster, CUI, and CMU. Now, Concordia beat Westminster.

SPEAKER_02

I know. I know, man.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, it it's it's getting it's getting interesting, and and it's getting fun just to watch those games.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and Westminster's gonna be playing Mesa coming up. We'll talk about that as well.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, let's move to Limestone against Newberry. Night game on Saturday. I watched that game. What'd you think? Here's what I would say. I I think well, I I have several things. One more beginning of the game, you know, first half versus second half. But I will tell you what blew it open. I mean, it was a fairly it was a closer game in the first quarter, and then limestone started to break it out. The one thing I would say on their offense, Danny, and I wrote this down, is ball movement, ball movement, ball movement. Yeah, yep. They did it so much that they, even when they got doubled, they the guy, whoever had the ball on offense, would not hold on to it long, and then they would score. They would just wait and be patient. But guess what that did? By the fourth quarter, now Newberry's defense was so worried about off-ball movement, they're watching their guy and they will not slide on a dodge. And now, Limestone can just dodge and score. They did that several times in a row in the fourth quarter, and that's what broke it open to the win 18-9.

SPEAKER_02

I'll tell you, the first thing that stuck out to me in this game was the high energy, the the rate of speed at which all these players were playing on the build.

SPEAKER_04

Newberry, too. That first the whole game. They were playing.

SPEAKER_02

They did. They played well, Lewis, the whole game. I didn't, I mean, they played hard.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

They played hard. I'm not gonna lie, they played hard. Limestone's stacked, man. They just run guys out there and just keep running guys out there. Fresh legs, fresh legs, and they all can play, they're all high IQ players, they're all like phenomenal lacrosse players. They don't make a whole lot of mistakes, limestone. Their defense is, you know, some people say, ah, their defense isn't that great. Now I say bullshit. I say their defense is good.

SPEAKER_04

So that's two things. The first three minutes were sloppy, but sloppy on both both sides with sloppy passes. Now I think a lot of that may have been for a lot of sub-reasons. One, I think really trying to push, like you said, push the pace. But then, even though it was seven to two at half, and it was not limestone ahead, it was not because of Limestone's offense that they were ahead seven to two. It was their defense.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And how they shut down Newberry. That's what I saw in the first half. And then it was their then it was their offense really taking over in the second half. Because Newberry had a lot of possessions in that first half.

SPEAKER_02

Let me tell you something. They outshot Limestone. They outshot him. So they had the ball a lot.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, but my man Colin Selters, in between the pipes, he only saw 22 shots on goal and he stopped 13 of them.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

He was not letting anything get by him.

SPEAKER_04

He was really some really good saves. It wasn't like there were some that were like, okay, his defense set it up for him, but he had some saves that were No, he did.

SPEAKER_02

He played well, man. Yeah. You know, my my my note was like how Limestone just they just looked super ready for this Newberry team. Whereas a week before, Wingate didn't look ready for them and gave up that 8-2 lead in the beginning of the game. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Limestone was like claw back.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Limestone was like, uh-uh, that ain't happening here.

SPEAKER_04

Exactly.

SPEAKER_02

You know, that ain't happening here. They out-energy, they out-hustled, they outran them. I was, I'm just really impressed with the Limestone Saints all-around game, Cav. They just there's not many weaknesses, man. No. And each each week it's somebody else with like big points in that game. You know, it could be McGarry one week, it could be Zach Terry one week.

SPEAKER_04

And you look at it, Mike McGarry didn't come in until the second half.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think he got in trouble. He must have got in trouble.

SPEAKER_04

He ended up with two goals and an assist. And that was like in the first five minutes.

SPEAKER_02

He probably missed a lift or a run or a yoga or something.

SPEAKER_04

He definitely came in and he won, he wanted his presence known.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. So for limestone, I mean, they won 18-9. They go to 10-1, Kev Day. Look really good uh for them. Uh Caden Onagy had himself a game, five goals, two assists for a seven-point game. Zach Terry had three goals and an assist. Mike Gary with two McGarry, Mike McGarry with two goals, Austin Lamaro with two goals, Grant Rogers with two. Kyle Keesey added a goal and an assist. I mean, Blake Marikle, that kid, he's like the uh um Native American. He's got the long, thin ponytail.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Dude, he can play.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

He's like a second line, you know, guy, but he comes in and he he he he he's a big boy. And when he scores, the Saints go nuts. I don't know. There must be some sort of inside story there, you know. But Miracal had one. Carter Kaczynski, who I really like the way that kid plays, just something about his play that I like. He added a goal. Uh David Brad. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not telling you, these guys, that's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine guys that scored. Yeah. I mean, how do you stop this team? Uh, again, at the dot, Dylan Cox was 12 for 15. Phenomenal evening. And he split time with Kyle Dani, who went six for 13 at the dot. Uh, Liam Krause had two ground balls and a one-called turnover. And like I said, Colin Selter's been between the pipes. Only saw 22 shots on goal and stopped 13 of them. Uh, for the Wolves, Cage Vigor, three goals. Liam Bollins, two goals. Scott Williams, two goals. Uh Johnny McLean and Jack Bucknell each with one. Colby Rogers, eight for eighteen at the dot, struggled a little bit. Caleb Malin was really good. Three ground balls, four call, four calls, turnovers for him. Brent McMullen had five saves, led up 16. Um shots, 44 to 40 in favor of Newberry. Turnovers, 25 for Newberry, 23 for the Saints.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, the thing that I noticed, Danny, as you go through this, listen to the team stats. They're all pretty damn close except for face-off and then EMO. And we'll get to EMO in a second. EMO, one for 10. Right. But if you look at that, there were three or four times where there were two penalties at the same time against limestone. So it was six against four. And they couldn't bury it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I know.

SPEAKER_04

Now sometimes it was just 30 seconds, but still six against four. So when you say it wasn't ten separate times, which makes it a little bit different, right? From a percentage point, it's more like one out of seven. It's still not good. But my point is horrible. But you're still six on four.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, 100%. And the and the Saints went two for four on the EMO. So Limestone looks good, Kev. They're one of my top. I I still think they should be number two as far as I'm concerned. I think they've had a harder schedule than a Delphi.

SPEAKER_04

That's just Well, I agree with that.

SPEAKER_02

I'm not taking anything away from a Delphi. They're a very good team. I just think right now, I think Limestone's a better team.

SPEAKER_04

And I think it's it's tough to match Apples to Apples because a Delphi, you look at some of their scores, they're crazy. Like you said, they they haven't let any beyond eight and they've scored some things in the 20s, but it's also competition. So how are they gonna match up against a limestone later on or a Tampa later on if they do get to the NCAAs for that? It'll be it'll be very fascinating to watch that. It's not but I agree. I've seen both teams, I just see limestone as just oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I hear you just speed speed-wise. Yeah, you know, like uh eye candy counts. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, eye candy counts, Kev. I've seen most of these teams play now, especially the top 20, um, multiple games now. Um seen Newberry multiple games, limestone multiple games, LR multiple games, Tampa multiple games, Seton Hill now, multiple games, Wingate multiple games. I watched multiple games from Pace and just all these games. And I look at the eye candy, there's kind of like four teams that are just separating themselves from the rest of the crew.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, and when I look at that, I first thing I see is speed, the difference in how fast this certain teams are, Tampa, Limestones, the Adelphi's.

SPEAKER_04

It's not just fast in footwork and actual speed, it's how fast they move the ball. Yeah, and how fast their defense with their footwork.

SPEAKER_02

It's all around play. It's fast and all-around play. Yeah. I look at the some of these teams and I feel like I'm watching D1 games.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, you are.

SPEAKER_02

Some of these teams are good and like really good. You know, and I I just the way things are some in the North right now, I think without a Lemoyne, without a Mercyhurst, changes things up a little bit. If there's less really good squads in the North now.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, I would agree with that. From there's really good teams up there, but from a condensed, you know, if you look at the Sunshine State and you look at the SAC and you look at pieces of the Conference Carolinas and even GLVC, which is in the South.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. That's right.

SPEAKER_04

That's right. And you look at how close the teams are in the GLVC, and you know, you look at the GMAC, that's over 10 teams now, any 10 is at nine, it drops off quicker than I think some of those other conferences.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

In the South.

SPEAKER_02

And so a lot of these North kids, not all these North Lorce lacrosse players are going down south to play.

SPEAKER_04

But but we have to point out the North Region won last year, the whole enchilada. So that's last year.

SPEAKER_02

That that chapter has closed. It's in we're we've opened, we've opened the book to a new chapter. And as as good as a Delphi looks, and they look phenomenal, to me, right now, as of now, I don't really think they play in anybody.

SPEAKER_04

Well, I would agree with you that I put Tampa and Limestone ahead of them. Coach Volpe actually would like me to say that. So, you know.

SPEAKER_02

He's great.

SPEAKER_04

Because he knows he knows that, you know, he wants he wants me to say it because that that breaks the curse for them.

SPEAKER_02

I just want to see a Delphi play one of those squads, you know. I know. I really do. Yeah. Like, you know, it's Pace and Saine A's really in the NE 10 that can really give them a game. And just from what I've seen, I don't know if either one of those teams can beat an Adelphi. I just think that's a good thing. Well, you know what?

SPEAKER_04

A Delphi played Rollins again this year, and I think going into the season, prior to Rollins having some injuries, you could say that was going to be a really good matchup. But Rollins isn't that that team with the injuries they've had on defense, they're not the same.

SPEAKER_02

Nope, they're not the same.

SPEAKER_04

And so it's the same thing when I was talking, uh, texting with Coach Peruzzi. You know, some teams you put on the schedule that you think are going to be good don't match up that year the way you thought. And that's kind of happened to Delphi a little bit this year. Um, and we'll just have to let it play out. Let's move on to our game of the week last week. Lewis hosting Seton Hill.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. What'd you think of that game?

SPEAKER_04

So it's funny, Danny. I I told you I was on travel, so I landed back home from Florida. As soon as the plane lands, I get my phone up, I turn the game on, and it's 1040 left in the third quarter. And at that point, it was either a tie game or it was one goal. Seton Hill was uh a goal ahead. So I went back and watched the game the next day, and I did not know until I watched it again that Lewis really dominated that first quarter. They came out a lot of energy, a lot of hustle, and they dominated. They were 4-1 with 4-30 left in the first, and it was 4-2 at half after the first quarter, and you're thinking, This is a game. And then and a game, not only game, but a game that Lewis had control of. But once again, I think maybe depth, not depth in roster size, but depth and talent from you know being able to there's not much interchange, there's not much difference between, you know, line one and line two, and maybe line three and some other defenders, short stick D-mittis, blah blah blah blah blah. Seton Hill comes back in that second quarter and they tie it up five five with five minutes left to play, and then it's six, six and half, and then it's basically Seton Hill's game in the second half. And you know, it's all it almost became it was 12-8 after three, so you still think they're in it, and then it just became a death, death by a thousand cuts, in my opinion, and Seton Hill just put the gas pedal to the floor and didn't let go. They had two four-goal runs in the second half and just split it wide open.

SPEAKER_02

To me, to me, this game was a tale of two halves. Two halves. Two heavyweights, checking each other out first half, and you're right, high energy, a lot of speed, a lot of fast, very physical, too. Guys are getting pushed around. There was a lot of pushing down the alley, a lot of like a lot of physical play. Um, and I like to see that. I like when teams get physical. And when I coached football, I always used to tell my team, you know what good teams hate? They'd be like, what? I'm like, they hate being a team being physical with them. So good teams, when when somebody's physical against a good team, I don't know, it just kind of brings out a better edge for some teams. And I just thought Lewis looked really good in the beginning of the game. And like you said, it was tied, it was tied 6-6 at half. I mean, it was 4-2 after one, Lewis. Lewis looked like they were there to play. You know, they came to play. And I said, Kev, like I said, when Pace played last week, they had to bring their A game. I said Lewis had to bring their A game. I think Coach Peruzi gave you a little email. Didn't he shoot you a little email?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, a little text. We're text. He said, Thank you for the the um bulletin board material.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Well, guess what? I was right again. I, you know, I gotta admit, I'm gonna pat myself on hold on, pat myself on the back.

SPEAKER_04

It is your birthday.

SPEAKER_02

It is my birthday, and you know what? Um, I just know my lacrosse this year. I think I'm on top of it. And Lewis is a good team, but they're just not on Seton Hill's level. That second half, Seton Hill outscored them 11-3, Kev. Yeah. That's they get out and transition so quick. They move the ball, they're in the offensives that you know uh here's what Will Cody Will Cody would make a save and just shoot that ball out there so quick. They must practice fast break transition.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Every every practice, because they look really good doing it.

SPEAKER_04

You're right, you're right. Here's one other thing I noticed, and I noticed this when I was watching it on my phone, and I and I verified it the next day. There were goals, though, in the second half when it was like a two-goal difference, three-goal difference, and you're thinking, okay, can Lewis come back? That was one thing. Can they come back? And they Lewis played great defense, and it's just a shot that Seton Hill gets in, and their hands are covered. There's you there it's not like they're totally open for the shot, and it still goes in. And it was still good defense. It's like, what are you gonna do? You it to me, they look like they played really good defense in the ball, they still scored.

SPEAKER_02

Seton Hill's very impressive. They're very impressive. You know, Coach, this isn't new for Coach Navotany. He's had his Seton Hill Griffiths in these positions before. He's had top five teams before. The first time I ever saw Seton Hill play in 2015, they were ranked number four in the country. You know, they were a good squad. Novotney knows how to get guys there. He knows how to coach the hell out of them. I mean, 48 shots to 34. 27 of those shots were on goal for Seton Hill. They're a good team. Yeah. Uh turnovers, Lewis had 21. Uh, Seton Hill had 15. Ground balls, 38 to 29. They just smoked them on the ground ball ward.

SPEAKER_04

That's a key stat.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, extra man opportunities, uh two for five for Lewis, three for six for Seton Hill. I felt, like I said, fast-paced physical game. Lewis jumped out to that early lead. Lots of energy from both squads. Lewis led 4-2 after one. Each team traded goals early in the second. Carter Green scored for Seton Hill, then Trevor Collier answered for Lewis. Herpster scored for Seton Hill to bring it within one. Lockgear tied it up at five. Herpster scored again and gave Seton Hill a lead. Trevor Collier answered for Lewis, and we were tied at half at 6'6. And the second half was all Seton Hill. Yeah. Out scoring 11-3. It was just a beatdown in the second half.

SPEAKER_04

And they had a, they had a yeah, like I said, they had the two four-goal runs that just put it out of reach. I'll tell you the other stat that you didn't mention I thought was key was face-offs. And I saw it more in the second half. Seton Hill at 18 to Lewis's 11.

SPEAKER_02

Well, Mark Strunk, who's the face-off kid for Seton Hill's number two in the country, Cal. He was 16 for 26. He's number two in the country for face-off percentage. Kids just kicking ass and taking names. Uh for the Flyers, Luke Schroeder with three, Trevor Collier with two. Kendrick Suckey, Matheny had two assists, too. And Zan Hayes each had one. Dylan Kendrick, nine for 15 at the dot. Dom Torello, two for 14 at the dot. They were running in two guys. Joe Janda, five ground balls, two cause turnovers, played well for Lewis. Caden Donahue and Cage, 10 saves for the Flyers. And for Seaton Hill, Braden Lockier having a good year. Three goals, two assists. Mikey Coleman with three goals. Riley Grudy with two. Carter Green with two. Kevin Erickson with two. Connor Zostan, one goal, one assist. Wade Brunell with one goal. Strunk, Herbster, and Granberg each with one. I mean.

SPEAKER_04

And Herpster had two assists.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, they just had one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven guys scored for Seaton Hill. I mean, it's tough. Holden Charbonneau. Lovey. Holden Charbonneau. Three ground balls. One caused turnover. And uh Mark Strunk, like I said, 16 for 26 at the dot. And Will Cody. 11 saves in the between the pipes for Seton Hill. So the Griffiths are 9-1. They look very, very good, Kev, to me.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I think they're going to be a tough out. And there we go. Lewis drops to 9-2. They still look good, though.

SPEAKER_04

They're still a very good team. And we'll get to them. I have them, their next game, in my games to watch this week.

SPEAKER_02

Anyone who's ever taken a kid to a morning travel game knows how important that travel cup of coffee is. When it's down to that coffee picture notes, you'll forget how early it is to think you're at home.com and do a better way to try it out.com. A better way to turn it off.

Games to Watrch

SPEAKER_04

So let's move to that right now. First game, I'll I'll say it right now. We I just mentioned it. Lewis against Maryville. Look at both Lewis and Maryville are at 1-0 in conference. At the top. I mean, they haven't they're just starting their because look at they played each other before uh or or Maryville played Rockhurst. Some of them are in conference play.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_04

Look at they want to stay atop. Who's they?

SPEAKER_02

Who's they?

SPEAKER_04

Lewis or Maryville. Want to stay on top of the conference rankings, right? Of course, yeah. And so, but one is gonna drop down. That's why I find this game very intriguing. It's at Lewis again.

SPEAKER_02

Who do you like? I'm gonna say Lewis. Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna go with Lewis this time. But you know what? It's not gonna be an easy game for Lewis. I think these teams know each other. They don't like each other. It's a conference rival.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, they know each other well. And I I expect Maryville to give Lewis a game, but I think Lewis being at home, just coming off a tough loss, I think they're gonna be ready. I'm gonna give a slight edge to Lewis Flyers in this one.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, what what games are you looking at?

SPEAKER_02

Well, Kev, we're recording on Tuesday, April 1st. Um on Wednesday, there are 21 games, Kev. 42 teams meet each other. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

We talked about a few of them last week. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

That's half the league is playing a Wednesday game tomorrow night. Yep. So um one game that I'm liking is St. Leo, Tampa. That's played on Wednesday. That's all right. So that game when this drops, we'll already have We already know. We'll already know. I think that this could be a preview of the Sunshine State Conference Championship game. I just think you know, Tampa, I don't see anybody knocking Tampa off right now, you know?

SPEAKER_04

No.

SPEAKER_02

So now it's for that second spot, really. Who's there? St. Leo? Who else is there? Maybe an Emery Riddle, you know.

SPEAKER_04

They're coming on strong.

SPEAKER_02

They are looking good, they're looking good, but right now, I think St. Leo kind of controls its own destiny right now.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So that game against Tampa, win or lose, is just gonna sharpen that iron for the St. Leo Lions. And I just like the way they're playing. They don't give up.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, they there's a lot of fighting that team.

SPEAKER_04

They had the game against Colorado Mesa, but I think Colorado Mesa just I don't want to say wanted it more, but I think they needed it more. And so they, you know, they weren't gonna leave without a win, and and St. Leo didn't look the same that game. But other than that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, again, yeah, again. I we spoke about that. I just didn't think St. Leo played their best that night, and that happens, you know, sometimes. And Mesa looked good. So and then St. Leo came right back and bounced right back and won. So I think that's gonna be a good game, and that's on Wednesday. I think that's gonna be a preview of our Sunshine State Conference Championship. See, it's my perception.

SPEAKER_04

So there's another game I'm watching. This is Saturday on April 5th. It's Davenport against Walsh. We're in conference play. Both are sitting second in the conference at 3-1. We talked about Lewis and Maryville at 1-0. Look at no one's gonna reach Seton Hill. We already talked about that in the GMAC. But this is for this is for seeding. Yeah. Right in the conference. Davenport against Walsh. Davenport has not had the season they had last year. And we talked about in the conference previews, they lost a lot of players. Walsh, I'm telling you, is playing better and better. They are. So, I don't know. It'll be a that's a fascinating game to watch, I think. Where else are you looking?

SPEAKER_02

All right, another game that I think is gonna be a good one, and this one takes place on Wednesday as well, Kev, is uh Anderson and Limestone.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, Anderson has been quietly spanking booty out there.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, we we talked about this game last week, but yeah, go ahead.

SPEAKER_02

They constantly, they've been, as each week has passed, Anderson's been progressively better, progressively better. They have two face-off guys, both it's like 66%, so they can run two face-off guys out there, and almost seven out of ten times they're getting the ball.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Their offense right now, Anderson's offense, is number one in the country. They're averaging 21 goals a game. Okay, they beat LR Anderson. This is a team that has the talent to beat a limestone. I think there's only two teams left in the sack with enough talent. I think it comes down to talent. If you want to beat limestone, you're gonna have to put some players out there. And as of right now, I think there's only really two teams with enough talent in the sack to give limestone a game. One of them is Anderson.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. And so I agree with you. But just like Lewis and Pace against Seton Hill, who have both have the talent to beat Seton Hill, and you said it, I know you're just gotta come with their A game for sixty minutes to beat.

SPEAKER_02

I think they have the edge at the face-off gap. So that could be, you know, if you look at like what Bentley did against the Delphi last week, able to win face-offs and slow, slow it down, slow it down, you're keeping the offense on the other team off the field. You know, Bentley just ran into Dylan Renner, you know, like it's hard to get balls past that guy, but they had a good game plan, and it worked for a while. You know, so could Anderson maybe copy that blueprint, that game print, and against Limestone. It's I think that that's gonna be a very, very good game to watch. I think Anderson's a good squad and a squad to watch.

SPEAKER_04

I give limestone the nod on that one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you have to. You have to give limestone the nod. Um, where is that game, though? That's the whole thing. I don't know where that game is. I think it's Anderson. I think it is too. I will tell you in a second. It's at Anderson. So it's gonna be in South Carolina, not too far of a drive for Limestone. I'm telling you, I'm gonna say Limestone wins, but they hold on.

SPEAKER_04

I don't. I say it's gonna be it's not gonna be like Newberry. It's not gonna be in that, I don't think it's gonna be in beatdown, but I think I think it's more like a four or five goal game.

SPEAKER_02

I think Anderson's a much better team than Newberry.

SPEAKER_04

I I just think we'll see. We'll we'll see once again if I I think it's gonna be uh you know you guessed you got the limestone Lenore Ryan game right, and I didn't, so we'll see. You mean you you may just be better than me, Danny.

SPEAKER_02

Danny boy's on fire this year, man. I should go to Vegas, man. I should bring some of my money out to Vegas because I've been on Weg.

SPEAKER_04

Why why am I disagreeing with you on your birthday? That's not right of me.

SPEAKER_02

That's all right. It's good. It's the banter is good between us. It's good, it's good. All right, so we can't agree all the time. We just can't agree all the time. You like chocolate, I like vanilla. It's okay. It's okay.

SPEAKER_04

Uh okay. My next game I'm looking at is also on Saturday, and that's Lander against Montevallo. Now look at Lander sits at five and six. Pretty surprising. Although we were questioning them what they would look like based on how much they had lost from a year before. Montevallo is at 9-3. This is what I say. First game in Peach Belt Conference play. Throw out the records against these two. I have to give the nod to Montevallo, but I think this one's gonna be a close game.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Montavalo's gonna win that game.

SPEAKER_04

Do you think it's gonna be close?

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, there we go. We disagree again.

SPEAKER_02

Because Alex Agorshin in the pipes has just been amazing this year.

SPEAKER_04

He has.

SPEAKER_02

I think he's like number two or number three in the country for say a percentage. He's just he's on fire this year, you know. If he's not an all-American, I'm gonna be pissed off at that committee. Yeah. Because I think I think he deserves at least a spot on one of the first, second, and third teams. He's just played that well. I agree. He really has. So I like I like Montevallo in that one, and I think they're gonna beat Lander rather handily. Lander, you know, played Wingate last week, and Wingate held him to five goals. I mean, the lowest point total that they've had in a year and a half. So Lander, as good as they are, just they haven't been as good this year as they were last year.

SPEAKER_04

Lander's playing at home. They didn't have to like travel like they did Wingate, and it's conference play. I see it a little bit different than against Wingate.

SPEAKER_02

100%. I I get you, man. I get you, kid. I get you.

SPEAKER_04

Someone should.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Where else are you looking? All right. Believe it or not, on Sunday, we got we got ourselves a good RMAC matchup with Colorado Mesa and Westminster, the old rivals in the RMAC.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

These teams don't like each other, Kev. They want to knock the snot out of each other. Um, I think this is gonna be a good game. Westminster's at 4-4 this year, and right now Mesa's at 6-2. The game's at Westminster, if I'm not mistaken. I'm gonna give Mesa the slight edge. I think they win, but I think it's gonna be a close game.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, this could go either way. I based on records and how they played this year, I would agree with you with Colorado Mesa. But when Westminster is home and they're playing an RMAC faux, they're pretty damn good. And they're gonna want this one. But I think I I agree. I agree with you in this one. I think Colorado Mesa. Okay, another game I've got is on Saturday. It's Wilmington against Post. Wilmington. Another conference matchup. Here we go. Look at this. Wilmington is four and three overall, two and oh in conference. Post is five and four overall, two and one in conference. So they played one more conference game. Wilmington wants to stay on top of the conference. Post wants to take it to stay even, to get even with Wilmington. This is a tough one to pick. Yeah, yeah. I I I didn't see head-to-head. I give the edge to Wilmington because it's at Wilmington, and but this could be a pick'em. I'm just gonna say Wilmington for the hell of it.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Alright. Wilmington, what's their record now? Four and three. And what's Post's record? Five and four? Yeah. I like Post. Post is gonna take this one from Wilmington. It's gonna be a big win for them.

SPEAKER_04

Okay. That's that's uh I I like that's a good, bold, hot take, Danny, on your birthday.

SPEAKER_02

Let's go, Post. Let's go, boys. Make me look good. I've been on fire this year. Don't make me look bad. Post. Do you have any others? I do. I have one more, actually two more. Okay. Uh we spoke about a little bit last week. Georgian Court, Chestnut Hill, CACC matchup. I think this is proceeding. I think this is going to be a very good game. I think it's going to be a good game. It's a pick'em for me. I can't pick each anyone to win. Uh, maybe I'll give the slight edge to Chestnut Hill right now, because they're the former champs of the CACC. And it's hard for me to go against them right now because every time I do, I look just stupid.

SPEAKER_04

Well, I almost feel like you know, pick Georgian Court regular season. Don't pick against Chestnut Hill on the tournament. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

If you did that with your money, you'd be you'd be in safe hands, I think.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good pick, good pick. Okay. One more, one more, one more. I'll let you do it in a second. Okay, okay. My last pick before we go to the to uh game of the week is on Saturday again. It's St. Mike's against Assumption. I've been talking about this game for a while. What's interesting is St. Mike's, they started out fast out of conference and they were playing well. We thought they'd play well based on what we said in the conference preview. They're now 0-3 in conference. Assumption is 2-2. And Assumption, like we talked about, just went to overtime with St. A's.

SPEAKER_02

They almost beat St. A's. I like Assumption in this game against St. Mike's.

SPEAKER_04

I tell you what, I'm gonna go opposite. They're playing at St. Michael's. I think St. Michael's regroups and beats Assumption, but I think it's close. I this is almost a pick in game for me. Assumption has looked really good.

SPEAKER_02

I'll tell you, they were they were pretty impressive last week. I was pretty impressed with them, to be honest with you. They played well. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

All right. What's your last game?

SPEAKER_02

My last game, again, uh SAC game, because you know, this this conference, I think whoever the automatic qualifier is has a real chance of going to the national championship. And I think the sack, the way the teams are, I think with the two losses for Wingate, it kind of makes all those roads kind of bumpy in that sack now. Who's gonna they're vying for seeds? I mean, it's big now. And I just think this LR Newberry game. I mean, we know that Newberry uh LR hasn't really been that great this year. They've had their struggles here and there, and they face a tough Newberry team who's like, they're tough, man. They are physical, they're fast, you know, they like to get after it. Just coming off a sting and loss. You know, this could be this could be a tough game for LR, you know.

SPEAKER_04

They're playing at Newberry.

SPEAKER_02

And they're playing down in in South Carolina with the Newberry Wolves, so it's a pick'em game. I can't pick a win. I mean, my heart, my heart and head say LR.

SPEAKER_04

My head says LR. I agree with you. I do think Newberry's gonna play better against them than he did Limestone. Yeah, I think it's gonna be Limestone's better than Lenore Rhine right now. We played it when they went head to head. So I I think Lenore Ryan is going to come and not want obviously they don't want the same results as what happened with Anderson. And so I think they're they're gonna be more prepared, better prepared against Newberry. I do think this is gonna be a close game, though.

SPEAKER_02

I think that Coach Cotter is gonna have Newberry ready. I think he's gonna have this team thinking that they can beat them.

SPEAKER_04

Look at they finally beat Wingate, never done that. They haven't beaten limestone, they didn't do it. They really want to go two and one against the the big three in the sack.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, 100% they want to. But like again, I think my heart and my head just, you know, Coach Paradine's a good coach. He just knows how to make in-game adjustments. He's good at it, you know. He's he's a smart guy. And and you know what? And LR has a lot of offensive power. Uh, they have Matt Mancini, you know. Uh gotta give the little edge to LR on this one. I agree. I agree. But I think it's gonna be a good game.

Game of the Week

SPEAKER_04

I agree. Howdy, folks!

SPEAKER_02

And this is the game that we brought by the two. Bringing you the game that we believe is the best thing all of you.

SPEAKER_04

Let's go to the game of the week, Danny. Yay, finally. Finally. The listeners are like, well, you just get to the game of the week, you knuckleheads.

SPEAKER_02

All right, well, here it is. That's a lot of games. How many guys the listeners are gonna go, what did they say? How many games did they follow?

SPEAKER_04

How many games are they gonna talk about on Wednesday when the podcast comes out on Thursday? I know, I know. St. Ansome against Adelphi, number two five against number two. Yep. Both undefeated in conference and regular season. Adelphi sits at 10-0 regular regular conference regular season and four-0 in conference. St. A's at 6-0 and 3-0. St. A's just had a tough outing against Assumption.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And if you look at what they did head to head against other teammates, they both won, both beat Mercy and Bentley. But St. A's had a closer fight against Mercy than Adelphi did. I don't know if that tells you anything. If you just look at scores, you know, because that's what you had to do. You have to really go back and look at the games and what the matchups were, I think. Right. I don't know. I just think I think it's gonna be a good game. It's top teams in the NE 10 and it's St. A's. I still give the nod to Adelphi.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Delphi big.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But if they're finally gonna get a test. I mean, I don't really think Adelphi's been tested. I've said it once, I've said it twice. Here, here's a test for them.

unknown

St.

SPEAKER_02

A's probably gonna be the best team that they've faced so far this year, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I've I've Bentley gave them a little bit of a of a test to begin with, once again, first half. Uh Bentley's a very good team. St. A's beat Bentley, so I agree with you. St. A's is gonna be it is gonna be a bigger test for them than what they've had.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's that's a game I'm definitely looking forward to watching, and that's on Saturday. Um so it's it's a crazy week, a lot of stuff going on. I mean, I think next week maybe we talk about some of the conferences, uh standings, yeah, where teams lie, what needs to be done, because I think we're at that part of the season now.

SPEAKER_04

We talked a lot as we talk about some of these where people stand, that's how I pick some of the games of where they are in the standings. But if we can go through, like you said, I agree with you, where they are, maybe what they need to do, yeah, proceeding whatnot, and look at that a little bit more. Of course, that could be a three-hour podcast, which I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Right, right.

SPEAKER_04

Only people who are traveling to games that are, you know, like six hours, they're gonna want to listen to the whole thing.

SPEAKER_02

You know, not you know, I'm gonna disagree with you again. People like our podcast, they're listening, they're finding ways to listen. I have a friend of mine, he says he listens, he takes the Long Island Railroad home to commute every day, and he says he can't wait for the Thursday drop because he's got something to listen to on the way home from work. He's got a good hour and 10-minute, you know, commute, and he loves it. He says, I can't wait. He's like, it's the highlight of my Thursday afternoon commute home.

SPEAKER_04

We had a listener send us uh and he send me an email today talking about the April Fool's joke of Linenwood coming back into NCAA play, and he clicked on the link and it brought him to Linenwood apparel, sports apparel to get. I don't know if it was lacrosse apparel or not. And I and here's a two, and he was telling me, I'm like, yeah, it's kind of funny. My wife and I joked the only clothes we have are from all the different colleges our kids went to. You know, like we don't pay enough for them to go to school, we have to buy all the apparel. I said I would buy Linenwood lacrosse apparel if they brought Linenwood men's team back into Division II.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. You know, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Once again, he said same thing. He loves the podcast, and so it just it's great when you hear those sort of things from the listeners.

SPEAKER_02

100%.

Player's Spotlight

SPEAKER_02

I agree.

SPEAKER_04

Now it's time for the players of spotlight. Time for that player spotlight. My favorite part, Kev. My favorite part. I know, and this time it's time to return to our favorite position, goalie. What else? What else? Well, I well, it's it's always fun to find out what makes them tick, right? They they've got to have something wrong with them to get between the pipes. That's my opinion.

SPEAKER_02

You know what I'm saying? You know that there's something wrong with these guys that get between the pipes. I'm gonna shoot one at you at 105 from nine yards away.

SPEAKER_04

And I'm not gonna wear sweats or any pads on my legs.

SPEAKER_02

No, he wears sweats, Kat.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, he does. I know.

SPEAKER_02

This our next guest got his own unique swag for sure.

SPEAKER_04

He does, he does. But here's the other interesting thing. You know, we've had several players on the spotlight who really started to make an impact immediately. But Danny, that is not the norm, right? I mean, a lot of times you have to bide your time, your freshman year, get experience until you move up. That's exactly what this goalie did. And now he has taken over between the pipes, and he's doing what he needs to do is keep his team in the fight. He's at a 53% save percentage, which is great. Phenomenal. He's doing what he needs to do right there in between the pipes. So let's just bring him in and let's talk to him about it. Gavin Conlan goalie for the Lake Erie Storm.

SPEAKER_02

All right, Gavin. Welcome, kid. How are you? I'm good.

SPEAKER_00

How are you guys? Thanks for having me.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, our pleasure, man. Good to have you. All right. So, first of all, we talked about it. Do the sweats help you in blocking shots? Is that like extra part of the gear that you wear for that? Or is it just because it's in Lake Erie and you just want to be a little warmer?

SPEAKER_00

Well, it's definitely cold up in Lake Erie, but I would say it's uh it's kind of a mental thing, it's a little bit like comfort almost.

SPEAKER_04

Well, it's funny because you see a lot of goalies in the middle of summer still wearing the sweats. Did you do the same thing? Do you always wear them or do you do you switch it up?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I pretty much always wear them.

SPEAKER_04

I love it.

SPEAKER_00

I love it throughout the summer for sure.

SPEAKER_02

He's got his socks below his the pants are below the socks. He's got his like pants tucked into the socks. Yeah, he's definitely got his own swag. He's got the mustache, he's got a little bit of that. He's airflow growing in the back.

SPEAKER_04

He has a goalie.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so Gavin, you know, you you're a grinder, man. You're what we call a grinder in this era of you know, transfer portal and all of that stuff. A lot of kids would say, hey, you know what? Maybe I'm not playing that much. I'm, I might, I might look somewhere else. But you didn't do that, man. You showed uh a fortitude, a determination, a certain grit. And you know what? Uh uh, a brotherhood to your brothers. You're like, I'm staying here, I'm gonna work my way and grind. What was that like for you?

SPEAKER_00

Uh, so I would just say, like, I mean, you know, my dad, Danny, ever since like a young age, he's always instilled like hard work and I mean uh character. So it's just something that like I've always been a hard worker in sports and had a good work ethic. So I've always just liked the grind and stuff. And you mentioned the brotherhood. That's definitely something I love with like years that's kept me here for sure. So I'd say, like, just putting my nose down to the grindstone and like coming to work every single day is something I love.

SPEAKER_04

So we talked about this uh before we started recording. You told me because I I saw that you're you know on the website on the roster, it says Red Shirt Jr., I looked on your stats, did not play your freshman year. You were injured in fallball, right? Can you go through that and what your mindset was, and then when you got back and your recovery and and how that transpired?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so at the end of the fallball, I broke my collarbone, and that's that's something I'd never experienced before, like a major injury. So it was definitely tough. But uh going through all the PT and stuff definitely helped me a lot. And then it was just like nice being able to kind of sit back on the sidelines and watch a little bit and get more like in depth with the game from that way because it's definitely a lot quicker coming from high school to college. So being able to sit back and see it for once was kind of nice.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, so now you talked about it. What has that goalie room been like for you? And how do you think because if you look at your your how many starts you've had each year, you didn't come in then your sophomore year and just take over. You progressively have gotten more and more. So there's competition in there for you. Talk to us about that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so I mentioned it before. It was I sat behind my first year, uh fifth year from Australia. He was a great guy, Lincoln Potter. He was just like, he kind of like built that gold room for us a little bit and was just like, we're all brothers, but at the end of the day, we're gotten for that one spot. So like whoever's competitive out of all of us is gonna get it. So it's like at the end of the day, whoever wins it, like they deserve it for sure. So it's like whoever works the hardest and puts the best product out on the field is uh is the guy who's gonna be in between the pipes.

SPEAKER_02

So now, how'd you get started playing lacrosse? You got kind of started a little late, didn't you?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so I've always been around lacrosse my whole life. My cousins uh from Long Island, they went to Manhasset, big lacrosse school down there, and then when I came up in Rochester, seventh grade at my middle school, they were like, So who wants to play lacrosse? And I was like, Sure, I'll play. Uh first I was I was a midi. I didn't know what position to play, so I was like, all right, midi. And then I wasn't playing much at midi, so they're like, all right, I'll play defense, play defense, and so that was fun. And then like uh eighth grade, we didn't have a goalie on the team, so it was like I'd already played hockey goalie, so I was like, I might as well try it. And then from there, I was just like in love with it.

SPEAKER_02

That's what I was gonna say, because you were originally kind of like a hockey player, kind of where and you were a goalie between the pipes on the ice. Yep. What was that transition like from the ice to the open field lacrosse? Was there similarities in the way you play the game and uh how you approach being a goalie, or is it completely kind of different?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I would say like at first it definitely helped with the reaction time and just like being able to pick up the puck and then transfer to a ball, and then definitely like once I got older and like understood it more, like angles and stuff definitely helped a lot, and just like being able to block the ball with my body. And I also played box across in the summer, so I played box goalie, and that kind of helps as well. With all that pads and all that stuff, you put that on. I love it too, it's super fun.

SPEAKER_04

With well, I would I could play goalie, I think, with all the pads. I wouldn't be the good, but I'd have the pads on, that would help me out, dude.

SPEAKER_02

I gotta see a picture of you with all those pads on.

SPEAKER_04

That's one that may be that may just have to go up when I post this this whole podcast episode. Gavin Conlin wearing box lacrosse pads. So did you play hockey all through high school too?

SPEAKER_00

Uh, I stopped playing hockey after my sophomore year because I was like, all right, I know I'm not gonna like go to the juniors or go to the NHL or college, so it was like I might as well focus my time into lacrosse where I know I'm gonna have a future.

SPEAKER_04

So yeah, that was so how did you get to the Lake Erie Storm, my friend?

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so it was definitely a tough journey through COVID for recruiting, so it was kind of like I was just reaching out to like whoever I could. I would like make out my list and and like look up my information on the school, figure out what like who is the coach, what the program's about, and like weed it out through there. And then like I was on NCSA. If you've ever heard of that, it's like one of those recruiting platforms, and they were like one of my top matches. So I figured I might as well just send a message out, and then conversation got going. We hopped on a phone call. I seemed I really liked Coach Ashton and what he was about, so I came down for a visit, and then since there it was just like as soon as I got to campus, I liked the campus a lot, like the guys a lot.

SPEAKER_04

So that sealed the deal for you, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Definitely that and the guys, like so. I did it overnight, and it was like my only overnight for my uh recruiting time, and it was like the the atmosphere was just awesome. So it was definitely the guys that sold it for me.

SPEAKER_02

Everything was a fit, that's awesome, man. And um, what was I gonna say? Uh just you know, like Kevin said, you had to work and grind your way there. Now you're kind of like a leader on that defense. How's that transition been where you know, where maybe some of the younger guys are kind of looking up to you? What's that like now?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it's definitely a big change from going from like a quick it's it's happened really quickly, in my opinion. But uh, I like it a lot. Like it's just nice to be able to like help out some younger guys or like my freshman goalie right now. Sometimes I'll like see him struggle and give him some tips, and then it's nice being able to like have like that and people look up to you for that.

SPEAKER_04

That's great. That's a great answer, man. And uh looking at this year for you, you've had some huge games against big teams. 22 saves against U Indy, 19 saves against Seton Hill. How are those games playing against those teams? You had you still lost because they're Undy and Seton Hill, but you look at those that kind of numbers for saves, what was that like being between the pipes for those games?

SPEAKER_00

I mean, honestly, it's kind of just like surreal, like you're kind of just out there in the moment, but like one thing that I like to think about when I like reflect on those games is like something Coach Ashton says a lot is like we come to Lake Erie to play in those types of games, and like it's it's 100% true. Like, I I just in as a competitor, I enjoy playing in like those games against good opponents and top level, it's it's just enjoyable.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's great. That's awesome. You also play goalie for the Ireland team, you were on the U19 team last year. Tell us about that, because that's kind of pretty cool. I watched you play England in the championship game last year. I was like, look at my man in between the pipes, you had the green sweats on. Yep, Kelly Green. He was he was all Irished out, Kev. He was great, it was great. So tell us about how you got to Team Ireland, what that experience going, traveling abroad, and playing lax against the world. Tell us that little journey, tell us how that went.

SPEAKER_00

Basically, like after my freshman year, I found like I was following Ireland lacrosse on Instagram for a while, and I saw they were doing like a supplemental tryout for the next World Games. Uh, and it was it somewhere like I can't remember where it was, it was like Orange County, New Jersey, and uh or like somewhere down in that area. But um, me and my cousin both wanted a tryout, so we tried out for it, and uh we both made the team. So he but unfortunately he tore his ACL that summer, so he couldn't come with us. Yeah, but went to Ireland for that. That was an unreal experience getting to see like top guys like Brendan O'Neill and uh ever since it was just like I was already connected in the family, so the next word of trial came out for this team the past summer. So I told my dad, I was like, All right, we gotta try out for it. Got my Irish citizenship this time, so I have a passport, so it's all official, and uh made the team, and then it was just like it's a surreal experience going to those like tournaments and uh being able to see like all these guys from all the different parts of the world and just like being uh part of something that's like bigger than you, it's like your heritage, like your parents, your family. Very nice.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it must be cool. Phenomenal. I'll tell you, being in the Navy for 23 years and being to travel the world and see different cultures is amazing. Being immersed in that during that tournament must be really, really cool to see all the different cultures playing the same sport you do.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, definitely.

SPEAKER_04

Uh yeah, that's amazing. Now let's turn to your team, uh the storm. You stand at four and six right now with three uh games to go. How is the team feeling uh about going into these last three games? Which, oh, by the way, if you look at them, uh Malone, Davenport, and Tiffin, you have a I think a very, very good shot uh at ending up over 500. Do you guys look at it like all three? Are you looking at it one game at a time? And how's the team feeling at where you guys stand right now?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so our big thing this year has kind of just been like going into every game, like we gotta be one and oh this week. So it's basically we're just like one opponent by one opponent. So we're really like excited to get back out there and win some games for the rest of the year and go into conference play into the tournament with some steam. So just one game at a time for sure.

SPEAKER_02

Interesting. Yep, yep. That's the only way you can do it, really. I mean, you know, in in the NCAA, everybody's good, man. You know, there's no real shitty teams. They're all kind of good. You know what I mean? They all can they all can play, they all can face off, they all can pass and throw, catch, you know, they all run sets and offense, they run man up offenses, they run, you know, defensive sets with slide packages and stuff. Everybody's kind of good. Um I just think that what you've been able to do, like your grind, I think that's a great story because today, Kavin, Gavin, kids, kids are, I hate to say it, they're soft. You know? Hey, I'm not getting much run, you know. Maybe maybe I'll go somewhere else. But you didn't, man. And that comes from your background, that comes from your dad and your mom, and what they do, and and when you're young and like your dad would like say, put, you know, work hard and you know, the good things happen. So what's your plan? Let me ask you this. I don't even know. What's your major?

SPEAKER_00

Uh, so I'm a business administration major and I uh have two minors in entrepreneurship and coaching.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's great. Have you done any internships? No, because you're always in Ireland playing playing lacrosse in uh in Europe in the summer, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but right now I'm actually getting uh a practical experience for my coaching in a coaching class. So I'm coaching over at the high school by us, it's called Riverside. One of my teammates, Kenny, he uh was an alum there, so he kind of hooked it up for me with the coach. So it's pretty it's pretty nice to be down there.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, awesome!

SPEAKER_00

Oh fantastic.

SPEAKER_04

Well, are you just taking care of the goalies or are you doing deep?

SPEAKER_00

I'm doing everyone, so I'm just like I'm helping out with the goalies, helping out with the defense, whatever the other coaches need. So it's are you running?

SPEAKER_04

Do you have to run the box too? Because no one else wants to do it.

SPEAKER_00

I don't I don't go out to games, but I run the box before in like scrimmages and practice it. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That's great. That's a great thing to learn from, you know, and not only that, like if you have a good coach that you can learn from, it's gonna help your game, you know what I mean, as well. So it kind of works together. I think that's great. And I love when lacrosse players give back, you know, it's that community of lacrosse, everybody's so tight, you know, might be c might be coast to coast, but they're really tight. All these coaches know each other, you know, they've been around a lot of players know each other, they've played against each other or with each other in club ball and stuff like that. So when they do that, they all get together and it's it's a great community. So, what's your plan moving forward, like work-wise? Do you have anything on the horizon or uh nothing really?

SPEAKER_00

I think I think I want to be a coach for a career, so I'm not too sure where to go with that yet.

SPEAKER_02

But wow, that's interesting. Stay stay in the D2 levels and uh Yeah, who knows?

SPEAKER_00

Or assistant my alma mater first for sure.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, well, if if if Coach Ashen doesn't want you, we we know a few coaches. We may be able to put you put in a good word for you. But talk about giving back, Danny. I I think it's time for Gavin to give back some answers to you in the round.

SPEAKER_02

Here we go, the firing round. We have Gavin Conlin, the Redshirt Jr. goalie from Lake Erie Storm, Rochester, New York kid. Grew up with his dad's family. Really good family, Kev. Really good. So here we go. Best questions, best answers. First question mom's best meal.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, I gotta go with chicken riggies with pasta.

SPEAKER_02

Chicken riggies with pasta. All right, mom gets a shout out right away. In a game of one-on-one basketball, who would win? You or your dad?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, my dad, easily. He's schooling me. I this is something I'm so embarrassed about. Is that my dad was a D3 basketball player, played his whole life, and I'm one of the worst basketball players I've ever seen.

SPEAKER_04

That's a I wonder where you got that question from.

SPEAKER_02

From from me. His dad was a really good basketball player back in the day. We all kind of grew up in the same neighborhood. We had one schoolyard, St. Francis's schoolyard, and uh a couple of you know, hoops on that yard, and we'd be there for hours, Kev. I got next, I got next, I got next. So that's a great answer. Okay, morning bird or night owl?

SPEAKER_00

Definitely night owl for sure.

SPEAKER_02

Night owl, what's your go-to midnight snack?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, this is a tough one. Grilled cheese is always good.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's a good one. I like that one. Grilled cheese from midnight snack. Okay. Xbox or PlayStation, since you're playing video games with your roommates.

SPEAKER_00

This is an Xbox for sure.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, what game is on there right now?

SPEAKER_00

Chell. That's the big one for now.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, next question. Runs or lifts? I think I know the answer to this one. Runs or lifts?

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna go with runs. Get out of here.

SPEAKER_02

He's full of crap, parents. That's excellent. Okay. MLL or PLL.

SPEAKER_00

Oh. Since you're a box with the MLL or the NLL, you mean. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

NLL, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I was thinking about the MLL like the old league, but NLL, yeah, or PL.

SPEAKER_02

I have M written down because I'm an old school knucklehead, but NLL we'll go with that.

SPEAKER_00

I've been in a couple other events, like the experience is nice for sure. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, me too. I've been to a couple pl games. I love it. It's great. The action is insane, you know.

SPEAKER_04

And I'll I'll tell you what, I've been to I've been to the Georgia Swarm NLL, and I've seen a lot of other games. Those are great atmospheres during the game. If you must have been a Rochester Nighthockey, you have crazy fans.

SPEAKER_00

It's it's awesome. Yeah, yeah. And if you've ever seen Buffalo, they like fill out Bank Center. It's insane. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So since your other sport was hockey, what was your favorite hockey team growing up?

SPEAKER_00

Gotta go with the Rangers.

SPEAKER_02

I knew you were gonna say that. Who's your best? Who's your favorite player?

SPEAKER_00

Henrik Longquist Raleigh.

SPEAKER_02

How could you not? Yeah, Henrik was the unreal. Now he's calling games with for them now. Now he's awesome. Um, favorite professional football player.

SPEAKER_00

Favorite professional football player. Josh Allen. Gotta go, Josh Allen.

SPEAKER_02

He's going with the Bills. He's the upstate New York, man. He's got that upstate New York in him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, or James Cook. He's awesome to watch, Ron.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Um, tell us something about yourself that not many people know about.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, some of my teammates know this for sure. At least uh some of my defenders. Uh, when I was younger, I actually did Irish dance with my my sisters, so that's an interesting one.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. There you go. Yes, your sisters are very much into the Irish dance. I see the post that mom puts up with all the the wigs and the dresses and the shoes. It's pretty cool. So you did some of the Irish step dancing back in the day when you were a young lad? Ah, there you go. Sounds fun. Okay. Give us one uh item on your bucket list.

SPEAKER_00

One item on my bucket list. Um, I was actually thinking about this earlier because I'd watched some of the podcasts. So uh probably this one has been thinking about for a while too. To go to like one sporting event for every like major sports like championship.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, that's a good one.

SPEAKER_02

Right finals. That's a good one. I you know, that's well thought out. That's pretty good. I like that. All right, let's go to the storm. Who's the funniest kid on the team?

SPEAKER_00

Gotta go with Noah Beckett, number zero.

SPEAKER_02

What makes him so funny?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, he's just like he's like one of those guys that like he's like a different character every day. He's super funny.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's great. And who's the one player on the team you'd never let date your sister?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, number 19, Lotha Liffin.

SPEAKER_02

He's got all right, folks, to our listeners, you got the funny face. He's cracking up. He knows a lot more than that.

SPEAKER_04

Shout out, by the way. That's never the good shout-out.

SPEAKER_02

He knows more than we do. We can tell just by the look on your face. Um, what's on what's kind of hype music do you listen to pre-game? You listen to anything in the in the buds while you're getting ready?

SPEAKER_00

I I always got the headphones on before the game. I'd say definitely some like 90s hip hop and like every single type of rock, like every every subgenre of rock music for sure.

SPEAKER_02

90s hip hop. Hmm, that's kind of pretty cool. All right, last but not least, you did really good tonight, Gavin. Last but not least, give us your best impression of Coach Ashton.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so I I got like a couple things for this one. So there's one, like, so when after we do a film, he'll like put up notes on our huddle, and like this is one he's been using for for a while now. It's been like, this is egregious or something like that. This is another one I thought about while we were talking earlier. So, like a couple years ago, we were doing like a goalie individual, so he'll just like shoot on us, do a ton of different drills, and the baseball team had their radar gun in there at the same time, and like he shoots a shot, and it was like 99 or whatever, and then like at practice, that like later that day, someone like shoots, and he's like, That's not 99. Oh god.

SPEAKER_02

That's great. Well, Gavin, you did great in the firing around. Really appreciate you tonight. You're a hell of a player, you're a hell of a young man. Got to hang out with them, uh, Kevin, one night. My band was playing this beautiful outdoor bar in the summer right on the water. It was a packed night. I look up and there's the Conland family with Gavin there. Got to take a few pictures and hang out with them. It was a good night. Come from a great family. I love the Conlon family. I know Uncle Petey, I know Aunt Bernard pretty well. Um, grew up with them, you know what I mean? And your dad was like the younger guy. You know, he was like the little brother that would tag along, you know, kind of type thing. But when we needed somebody on the basketball court, we're like, What's back? Let's get back over here, you know, because he could play. So you've been a great guest tonight. Thank you so much for taking time out of study hall tonight. And uh, he's laughing. He's laughing again. Like he's not, like I'm not telling the guest.

SPEAKER_04

That's egregious study hall.

SPEAKER_02

That's egregious, is correct. Gavin Conlon from the Lake Erie Storm, thanks so much. You've been a great guest tonight. Appreciate it. Thank you, guys.

Shout outs

SPEAKER_04

Okay, Danny. Gavin Conlin. You said it on the when we were talking to him. And I kind of pre-briefed him of kind of where we were going with this. And I think it's important to say again I think student athletes need to realize, especially in high school, when they get to college, the competition is that much tougher. And you don't usually get that start to begin with. And what look at his attitude when he's been there. I love he goes, I loved the goalie room. It made me better. The competition makes me better. That's what I live off of. If you go in with that mindset and you you can contribute in a lot of different ways than just playing when you're a freshman.

SPEAKER_02

I think the kid's a great kid. Like it comes from a good family, hardworking, you know, family. His dad was a hooper, and you know, and instilled some of that hey, hard work pays off, you know. You do this, things are gonna work in your favor. Um, again, he's the kid who made his bones and grinded in this in this era of transfer portal and soft ass people and you know, soft parents, you know, allow, oh, my kid's not playing, we're gonna take you out of there. You know what? He said, you know what, I ain't going nowhere. These are my brothers. This is where I belong, this is where I I I want to be. And Kev, I just love his swag with his with his sweats and his pants tucked into his socks. He's got the flow, he's got the porn musk back.

SPEAKER_04

For Ireland, I mean team Ireland, I mean, come on. And I I'll say one thing before the transfer portal, we talked about this with the Taylor boys in Malloy. There's good things about the transfer portal, but it has opened things up where it makes it a lot easier just to say, I'm not gonna stick it out.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And I'm against that. I think when you commit to a coach, I think, you know, and a coach commits to you, whether it be with uh playtime or scholarship money, I think it's it you owe it at least a year, you know what I mean? Like give the guy a year. Yeah. Sometimes it don't fit. You know, you can't.

SPEAKER_04

Sometimes the coach leaves us leaves. And then and your scholarship may not be there the next year.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. And that's happened, that's happened before.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Hey guys, you know, sorry. That's another one of those reasons, like, okay, I can see that, you know, but I I agree I and you and I are more old school. I've always told my kids, even when they were young, I'm like, you're on this team. I don't care if you don't want to play when they did rec league. I'm like, you committed to this team to be on it this season, you're gonna finish the season. Absolutely. And if you don't want to play next year, that's fine. But and and I think, of course, you know, I committed to the military and the navy, and you know, but so I have that mindset. I'm you know, and so I agree with you there.

SPEAKER_02

And and Gavin, you know what? He's got that old school, you know, he it's been instilled in him by his parents, you know. This is the way we are, this is the way we like our son to be. Work hard, good things happen when you work hard. You know what? Again, he could have left, said I'm not playing now. He stuck it out. And look what it does. He's traveled the world to play lacrosse. And he is a kid who started in seventh grade.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, and he's playing well at Lake Erie. He's good, man. Good. Do not count him out.

SPEAKER_02

The team could use a little offensive help, you know. That's yeah, yeah. And I'm sure you'd say that too, but not out loud. You know, but um he what a great guest. I really liked the kid. I it was funny as he was talking, I I saw his dad in him. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, oh, that's his dad. He's really his dad. So great people, great family. Um he's had a really kind of cool career. And he didn't leave. He stayed and stuck it out.

SPEAKER_04

And he's got some more time.

SPEAKER_02

And he's got more time. So really thanks for Gavin for coming on and taking time from study hall, mom and dad. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

All right, time to move to shout-outs. Do you have any, Danny?

SPEAKER_02

Zero shout-outs this week. Nobody did anything special.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I tend to disagree with you on this one, too.

SPEAKER_02

We disagree again.

SPEAKER_04

First, Carter Wilcox of Lander has the most career points in program history, sitting at 207 now. 132 goals, 75 assists. He just beat that record, I think, last week. Great. Good job, Carter. He's a good player. Next shout out, Austin Lamaro of Limestone during the game against Newberry, got his 100th career goal. Wow, awesome, man. So shout out to Austin. He's another good player. And as always, a shout out to our sponsors, the D2 Showcase and Chad Coffee, Lids, and Cups. I say this all the time. They're sponsoring us. Please check them out. Their websites are in our show notes. If you have a high school lacrosse player who's looking to go to the next level in college, especially if he's a junior, check out the D2 showcase.
