It will in some way. So just to let our fans know, you know, Danny was down at the limestone game. We'll get down to that. He stayed uh for Easter Sunday to spend time with his son, did not get back until Monday. Thought his flight, you want to explain? You thought your flight was at 8 a.m. It ended up being at 8 p.m.

So then, so then you text me like, hey, can we record on Wednesday instead of Tuesday? And I'm like, no, I'm going to a hockey caps uh playoff game on Wednesday night. So here we are on Thursday. That is the series of unfortunate or fortunate events. You got to play golf with your son, you got a late flight, I got to go watch hockey with my oldest. It's not bad. Well, I had it all planned out, Kev.

I had it all planned out. I was gonna spend Easter with my son and then get that early flight Monday back to New York, and I would have like the afternoon, maybe do a little food shopping, because I haven't done that in about a week and a half. And then I was gonna sit down and throw a couple of games on and have myself a nice lunch, you know, and nice relaxing Monday. Enjoy it because I wasn't at work. I was, you know, gonna use that to my advantage. So I had an early flight, so I get I'm up early, 4:30, shower, get in the car, drive the 45 minutes to Charlotte Airport. I drop the car off. Um everything's nice. I walk in, TSA, there's nobody there. I breeze right through, go to D13, I get there, and the board says Minneapolis, St. Paul. And I'm like, what? What's that? Something ain't right here. So I look at my phone, and sure enough, I got an email from the uh from the airline. Your gate has been changed to C8. So I get my stuff and I roll back. I still have time, you know, and I go and I get to C8 and it's completely empty. There's nobody there, nobody. And the board says Miami. I'm like, all right, what's going on here? So I go over to the big digital board, I'm looking at all the flights, and I don't even have my flight's not even there. And I'm like, don't tell me that I am like wrong here. Like, what did I do? So I get my boarding pass out because I had to check in the night before, right? And I get and I said, okay, C8 uh American back to 8 p.m. I was like, oh no, you gotta be kidding me. And it's like quarter to seven in the morning. So I didn't know what to do. I went outside. I was like, do I call my son and have him come? No, you know what? He's got he's got the day off. He doesn't have classes, they have a meeting. I don't want to break up his day. He's got probably got something planned. Uh let me check an Uber. An Uber was way too much money. And I was like, shoot, let me see what a rent a car would be. And I was like, I'm not paying that just to go drive back to the campus. I didn't even know where I was gonna go. I you know, yeah. So you know what I did? I went outside, had breakfast, and uh I just hung out all day and people watched. Got home at around, I don't know, five after eleven that night.

And then since then it was just the downside for the podcast on time. We can't be on time all the time. We try so hard.

We did try, but it didn't work out this week. I mean, that's my second. Whoa, remember last year I was in Indiana, then Washington, D.C. That was the the weary traveler. Oh my lord. So listen, with all the traveling I've done, if that happens once in a while, that's not so bad. But the last one was all the punches. Last one was on me.

Yeah, yeah. Okay, before we get your top 10 roundup, we do have some D2 news, um, which I'm sure most people already know about. Interestingly, you know, Limestone announced last Wednesday that they were shutting down. Uh now they have I hear there was a reprieve, not a reprieve, but the vote was postponed. They were supposed to have a vote this past Tuesday. They needed six million dollars to stay in business through the end of the semester. They're gonna close down at the end of the semester. We were recording last Tuesday night before the news came out with Devin Spilker, limestone alum. News came out on Wednesday. So we were already finished recording when it came out, and we had some people DM us, like, hey, is it you know, what's going on with this? It's you know, after especially after they heard our episode on Thursday. And I'm like, yeah, it's just timing. Just really sad to hear that they're this this school is uh a legacy of D2. They really started the re they're the reason for the regions in a lot of ways, and starting in the south. And it's just a shame. I think we've heard that at least 40 players in the portal right now trying to see where they're gonna go. They're still trying to move along. Didn't really hurt them too much in the game against Wingate. They they came out on top of that. We'll talk about that later. But just for D2 in general, you know, when you've got legacy teams like NYIT and Limestone and Name and Merrimack and the ones that have left recently, it's just another kind of really set, especially sad for them to see not going up to D1, but just closing their doors. Oh, completely sad.

It was it's heartbreaking. Imagine being imagine being a junior. You're you did your three years, you're like, are you getting ready for your senior year? Your team's doing great, you have a really good chance of making a national championship, you know, you're a sack regular season champs. You know, it's a storied program, and the whole thing is just sad. Um, there was a lot of alumni there, and everybody's sad about it. It's it's heartbreaking news, man.

It really is. It is. It's not only for the players, but the the students. They've been it's been around since the 1840s.

It's a storied lacrosse program in Division II. Yeah. Multiple championships, and and you know what? And they've like set the bar. They kind of set the bar.

I actually wrote that note, a text to Coach Storier when I heard the news. I mean, you set the bar where everyone is trying to reach and emulate. Absolutely.

I mean, I ever since the first time I saw Limestone, I was like, wow, who's this team? Wow, they were just so much better than my son's team at the time, who won the Sunshine State Conference that year. You know what I mean? Like, yeah, they were a good team with all Americans. And and Limestone just put a ass whooping on them. And that was the first time I saw Limestone. I was like, where's this school? What's it about? And that's the first time I heard them. That's like 2009, 2010, and they've just been a top-notch program ever since, I don't know, ever since its inception, really. Yeah. They haven't had too many bad seasons at all. No. And again, they set the bar, you know, the multiple national championships. It's a small, tiny little school in a small, tiny little town. And uh, I'm sure that the town and and the gas stations and all the you know the stores in town rely on those students. Yeah. You know, rely on the college, you know, for economic reasons or whatever. But, you know, apparently they need six mil. That's the word. But what about the 30 mil for next year? Like, you know what I mean? Like, where's that coming from? It's not an easy thing to do.

So, what have you heard that they're trying to all I saw, I saw a note on social media that the vote that was supposed to happen this past Tuesday, so two days ago since we're recording, was postponed. And I haven't, to be honest, I've been too busy since then to try to see where where it stands. So I've been it's just a shame. And just from our perspective, obviously, for what we do, not that our two voices matter, but I I I do want to say to Coach Doyler, to his team, from us and in the crease, we're thinking about you, we're thinking about your boys. To be honest, in a lot of ways, I would love to see them go and win the whole thing in their last year.

You know what? So would I, and bring it to the sack, where the championship belongs, America. You know what? And I agree with you, you know, Coach Story. You know, just think, Coach has a family, you know, he's got kids. And as of what, certain day, they're not going to be getting paid anymore. Yeah. You know, and and this man who's given up his a lot of time to limestone university, it's his it's his life. And and uh this poor guy's out of a job, you know? And that that that's what really kind of, you know, these teachers, these professors, staff, yeah, they're out of a job, you know? And and the players, yes, it's stunning. They'll bounce back, you know what I mean? They have time. Yes, they'll bounce back. But when you're an adult and you have a family and a home and a house and 2.5 children and the dog and the picket fence, you need a job.

Yeah, I mean, exactly. I mean, it it's tough. It was tough, you know. And uh when I heard the news, I was like, this is this for real? Yeah, is this for real? And then again, like you, I got DMs and saying, and I had people sending me uh articles, and I was like, oh man. So I haven't heard anything since. I don't know if they're gonna get this money. I think I don't know if it's gonna be a thing. We'll see. I mean, I I think they're praying and hoping, but I think it's a super duper duper uphill uphill battle.

Oh, Kev, another kind of big week in division two, and this is your round up. All right, Kev. Number one, Tampa beat Emory Riddle in the Sunshine State semis this week. Emory Riddle knocked out Saint Leo earlier in the week. So Tampa is undefeated, and the Spartans keep rolling, rolling, rolling. Keep them doggies rolling, roll hot. Tampa's cooking, man. They're cooking. On to the next, as they say in all their posts. On to the next. On to the next. Number two, Limestone Saints beat Wingate 18-11 in an exciting game and beat Mars Hill in the last regular season game. They'll have the first round by in the sack tournament. Number three, St. A's beat nines pace 15-12. And St. A's will have the top seed and a first round by in the NE10. Uh number four, Seton Hill. Defeated Walsh rather handily. 25-11 Seton Hills, five and one, uh 15-1 overall this year. And they get the top seed in the GMAC tournament. Number five, a Delphi beat Franklin Pierce. I can't believe they let them score. It was 22 to 1. Yeah. Ugh. That's gotta be tough if you're Franklin Pierce. And they have the second seed in the NET Adelphi. Number six, Lenore Ryan beat Kataba rather handily, 23-9. Number seven, Anderson beat Mars Hill and have a first-round bye in that SAC tournament. They have the second seed. We'll maybe talk a little bit about them tonight. Number eight, Maryville beat Rockhurst 17-8. They face Undy. They have one more game before their tournament starts. So Maryville faces U Indy next, and Maryville looks pretty good. Number nine, Pace lost to St. A's by three. They finished the regular season 10-3. They have the third seed in the NE-10, and I think they might host SNHU Southern New Hampshire, if I'm not mistaken. Yes. Yes. Okay. Pace against SNHU. Yeah, we'll go over that. And here's the big one, Kev. Number 10 Flagler lost to Monte Valo in peach belt play 14-9. Yeah. And Monte Valo will have the the one seed.

Okay, Danny, I've got a couple to just go over to I found fascinating. One, North Greenville squeaking by Lees McCrae last week, 19 to 6. And this is what I 19 to 16, I'm saying. Lees McRae had 18 players in uniform, and they went toe-to-toe with North Greenville at home.

And I heard through the grapevine that North Greenville was a little scared at the end of that game because I watched the end of that game.

So, you know, and North Greenville's undefeated in Constance Carolina. Yeah.

Another one Westminster beats Colorado Mesa in overtime 10-9. Did not see that one coming. Montavalo comes back in overtime to beat UAH 16-15. Their head coach, Coach Fry, is on administrative leave, I've heard. They almost beat them and they played toe-to-toe with Lander. They almost beat Lander. They were ahead in several times during this Peach Belt conference play, tournament play. And then the last one, which kind of showed me that Tampa is beatable. They squeaked by Florida Southern last week in overtime 11-10 last Wednesday over a week ago. Yeah. Did you see the overtime?

You know, we had Mikey Simone's mom be like, you know, going crazy. But you know what? And uh Mikey Simone's career's over. He's done, you know, and uh he had a great career. Great career. Yeah, he he really did. And you know, Florida Southern looked really good in that game, and they just kept coming and kept coming. And and you know what? Maybe Tampa played down a little bit, but I'll tell you, that when it went into overtime and Chiz won the face-offs. I was like, oh, and then the ball was going, it was on the ground, it got picked up and went up in the air, and it came down.

It was like four times. I thought of the Southern had it back in their stick.

Yeah, and every time they had a stick, a check came out, bang, and the ball went up in the air, and then finally, like again, we went out of bounds and it went Tampa's way, you know.

Week in Review

on to our weekend review. I know based on your schedule, you basically watched one game. So let me go over a few that I watched. The first one you talked about, Maryville beating Rocker 17 to 8. I was gonna start right off. I wrote this note. It's a tale of two halves, but I literally, as I was writing that note, got a text from Joe Vadovnik saying, I bet you're gonna say on the next podcast a tale of two halves. So I said, I gotta change this up. So my two different references, Danny, are either it was like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde game, or it was like my golf game, where like the first front nine, it's steady and even. I'm playing right with the other, playing right where I think I should, right on par with my handicap. Right. And then the back nine, the wheels fall off. Because Maryville went out and won it 17-8. It was 4-4 after one, and this game in the end showed why Maryville is where they're at this year. It was 4-4 after one, 7-7 at half. And then uh they continued to battle in the third until about 10-minute mark when Maryville scored three quick ones to go up 10-7. They started winning a lot of face-offs. Um Rockhurst was getting some open looks, but Radke was Dylan Radkey was making some great saves. I think the Hawks helped him out a little bit with some easy shots right into his cross. I mean some easier saves. It's 13-8 after three, so they kind of open it up. Like they they like I said, it was they opened up 10-7, then they they kind of scored a few more. And like I said, Meryville just then just blew it open, and uh they end up winning 17-8.

So in the uh GLBC, Maryville has the top they have the top seed.

They have the top seed. Lewis will be the two seed. Lewis and Rockhurst play on Saturday. Rocky Saturday or Friday. All right, Rockhurst. Rockhurst is seven and the two seed. Because they're both they both have one loss in the in one in conference.

Yeah. Lewis is eleven and three overall, uh Rockhurst is seven and five overall. Who do you like? Who do you like in that game? I I can't bet against Lewis. Yeah, the GLBC, but like Maryville and Lewis, Maryville. Beat Lewis in the regular season. You Indy, you know, they're two and two, six and seven, sub 500. Crazy. That does that's just crazy. So it looks like it's gonna be Lewis and Maryville in that. I'm not gonna count you Indy and Rockhurst out, guys. You guys still gotta play the game.

Well, so that's just for seating. I if you look at this game, Danny, Rockhurst was dead even with them through the that first half. Dead even. Uh in play and everything. I mean, it just was a really close game. In some ways, uh it uh mirrored the Wingate limestone game, right? And I based on that, and based, you know, they Maryville beat Rockhurst in overtime. Maryville is right now, it's the better team. They are the better team. Now, if they play right have to play Rockhurst again, we've talked about this before. How many times can you beat three team three games in a row against a team like that? I I do think Maryville's that good, so we'll see. Another game was obviously you talked about this pace against St. Anselm. St. Anselm pulls it out 15 to 12. They started out, they go out, St. A's goes out to a 6-0 lead until the setters finally score with 22 seconds left in the first. So it's 6-1 after one, it's 9-3 at half. So the Saint A's outscored, St. A's outscored them by one in the second as well, and 3-2. So pace relief put themselves in a hole that they had to work back, and you're waiting to see what it what can they do to change things up. Not much. Not much. I mean, I'm sure they try to change things. I'm not a coach, but uh Saint A's defense was just stifling. It was 11-5 after three, Danny. I've heard Finn Grenara broke his collarbone. I don't think Finn Grenara was. If he did, I I did Nash Kelly did go in goal. I don't know if Finn did it at that game or if it was I did not see during the game. Now I have to remember, I probably didn't watch so much of the first quarter, so it may have happened somewhere in that game. But Nash Kelly came in and played a good game after that. So St.

A's lost their top goalie, man. Yeah. So we'll see how that fares in any 10 play. They're gonna have the top, they're 8-0 in conference. What a year St. A's had, you know. Yeah.

I'll tell you what, they've just been playing better and better. And obviously Finn Grenara was a big piece of that. I mean, their defense were stopping, instead of them stopping second chances and forcing empty possessions. There, I read a stat on lacrosse reference that their on-goal shooting percent percentage for that game was 71.3%. Oh boy, oh boy. Now, when you're doing stuff like that on offense, yeah, exactly.

It is tough to beat a team like that. Yeah. And you know what? Again, I think pace, as good as they are, there's just something missing about this team. I don't know if it's midfield, something. I don't know.

Well, they came back like, look at they were down 13-6, and the game ends. They they score um four quick ones in about two and a half minutes to close within three, make it 13-10. The goal, the score ends up being a three-goal difference, 15-12. So they fought back to give it the pace, but once again, when you're playing a team like St. A's, and we've seen that when you play a game like Maryville, play like a limestone. If if they create that big of a gap, uh it is very tough to close. I agree. You're right. Especially with teams like that, you know. With you know that's what I'm saying. Yeah, with with that, it it's it's just tough. And that, Danny, is exactly what happened in this game. I'm gonna talk about before we go to the Wingate limestone game. Lander against Flagler. Peach belt baby. Yeah. You and I both had Flagler winning this game. Yep. Lander came out with a great game plan on offense. They ended up winning 14 and 9. Flagler scores first, but then Lander scores at seven unanswered, Danny. That's unbelievable. I was watching it, Danny, and I was shocked. I was shocked not only by their pace and how they did it, I mean, they really were moving the ball well. It's something you usually see with Flagler.

They and Flag and Flagler did not have the ball in their offensive side of the ball that often.

Flagler finally scores with 126 left, so it's 7-2 after one. Landers D was really pressing out. And here's the other thing I would say, they were playing really scrappy. Like this, they wanted this game. They want the ball for all the ground. No, Lander. Oh, okay. Flighting for all the ground balls. They had they showed a lot of hustle. And if you go and look at the stats, the two team stats that really stand out, saves, lander had 10, flagler had five. Ground balls, though, Danny. This goes back to their hustle. 39 for lander, 23 for Flagler. Yeah. So it uh but you know, they're up 7-2 after one, and Flagler didn't give up. It's not like they they rolled over, they came crawling back in. They made it 9-6 at half. Very reasonable, especially for Flagler. Only a three-goal differential. Right. But Lander scores first in the third to push the lead back to four. And and it kind of goes back to fourth, and Lander scores the one minute left to go in the third to make a 12-8 after three. And you're like, okay, it's a four-goal game. Lander has controlled most of this game, but Flagler's not out of it. Then it just became a defensive game. There were no goal scorer, Danny, in the fourth until three minutes left when Flagler's goalie brings the ball up in transition. This was crazy. Brings the ball up in transition, tries to tries to clear it. Lander player picks it out of the air. Intercepted it. Intercepted it. It can go right around the goalie. Open goal. They now open up a five-goal difference. 13-8 with 250 left. There's not come, you're not coming back from that. No, no, you're not. So 14-9 was a front end. And like I said, Lander really controlled the whole games. And the Bearcats clinched the regular season championship in the peach belt there.

Oh, good for you. Lander Bearcats. I was not expecting that. I picked Flagler. So good for you, Lander. You got that top seed there. And and Flagler kind of shot themselves in the foot. I felt that they were in the driver's seat in that conference.

We said it the last, I think the last two weeks. They were definitely in the driver's seat. And what you don't realize, and I go back to that game I said about Montevallo just beating UAH in overtime, how close these teams are to each other. You get in that conference play. Yep.

And it's not smooth sailing. No, you're right. And you know, I figured Flagler was just gonna just sail right through this. I really did. Yeah. I really did. And to just to see that is amazing. Now, now we got to talk about Flagler. Like, what the hell, boys? Was that a trap game? Did you play down? Or did, you know, was the other squad just that much better that night? Or has Flagler really played anybody this year? I mean, they go through the Sunshine State, they beat Lynn and Rollins, and they they beat a lot of good teams. Yeah. But but I said to you, I think it was like two weeks ago, is Flagler a true top 10 team? Yeah. Are they a true top 10? Do they match up with the Lenore Rhines and the Adelphis and the Paces and the Limestone? Are they at that level? Are they playing at that level? And I felt as good as they were, they're not playing at that level. So here's Flagler kind of proving my point, getting beat up. And now it's gonna be a fight for them. Yeah. And that may be good for them. Exactly. You got punched in the mouth. Right. They got punched in the mouth.

How are you gonna respond? And they, like I said, they started to in that game. When I when it was seven to one, I'm like, oh my gosh. And I said it's still early, it's still early, but that's tough. And they they did fight back, but gosh, you know, lander was not gonna give in. And and that, I think, embodies the peach belt. You know, when they're they're not, they are not no team. Uah against Montevallo, UAH against Lander. They lose by two. UAH had lost won only like two games all year, and they put up a fight against. I love it. I love it.

If you don't watch who the in the peach belt and the and the RMAC tournament, but Westminster has the two seed now. Westminster has the three-seed. Oh, the three. They lost to C UI. So it's CMU. So Concordia. All right. So concordia. Cordia is playing Westminster right now in the second quarter. Westminster's up 7-5. Okay. Colorado, Mesa, and Dominican play later tonight. I think they're all playing these games at Mesa. Okay. That's at 9 p.m. Eastern. So um, yeah. It is.

Oh, it was a great, it was a great afternoon. I mean, again, Limestone had just found out two, three days prior to that, that they were closing. Everybody was in shock. And that game brought back a lot of alumni and a lot of families there. And uh the tailgate was insane. There was a lot of people there. Uh the fla uh the limestone people were all in there white. It was a whiteout. They all had Saints uniforms from the old days on. They had really, it was pretty good. Um, the atmosphere was electric all day, all afternoon. Yeah. It was limestone senior night. So they had their seniors coming out and doing their thing. And Coach Boyle from the Wingate Bulldogs did such a great thing. He took his team and pulled them to the side because they were doing warm-ups kind of getting the teams ready. And then they started this the senior ceremony, and Coach Boyle pulled them aside and let them do that. And like, I thought that was a classy move, you know what I'm saying? I just thought it was great. And you know, then I'm thinking about hey, Coach Boyle from Wingate coached at Dowling, and Dowling closed their doors. Yeah. Yeah. So he kind of went through right he knows exactly what Brendan Storier is going through at limestone, you know? And I just felt that was such a classy move by Coach Boyle and the Wingate Bulldogs. It was just a really good move. The game was exciting. Fast, fast, fast, Kev. These guys, the energy was electric. It was a night game. Uh again, all the alumni there. It was just, you know, that's what D2 lacrosse. It doesn't get much better than that. Yeah.

And I thought, I thought the game was a good game. And if you look at the stats, they're super duper close. Except for in a couple.

This second half is going to be a game. It was a good one. Didn't work out. At half. And it was a like I told you before we started recording, right? Line stone came down, scored two quick ones. I didn't know where Wingate's defense was. I was like, what the heck's going on? Then they settled in and it just became a battle. And like you said, Danny, it was fast. The way these two teams the precision on how they moved the ball. Now they did have both sides had some sloppy play. I attribute that more to the defense, even if it wasn't a cause turnover, creating that turnover, you know, just because of the the the tension, the the the play, the play that the teams were doing.

It was it was a good good game. You're right. It was it was a really good game. It was had it had playoff atmosphere, but again, the speed, the speed of this game was insane. I mean, and it kept going. And I, you know, I was just like, wow, this energy. And both teams were matching each other's energy. And it was great. Again, it was tied seven at half. Yeah. And it was and it was tied nine-nine with about seven, six, seven minutes left in the third. Yep. And then Wingate got caught on a transition goal, pole goal, and you saw a little wind come out of their sails. You just kind of saw, like, okay, hands on hips, you know, bet bowed heads, like starting to get tired. You know, and and and and limestone, they you know what? They went on to prove why they're a legitimate contender, you know.

I wrote this down. I just think Limestone's the better team this year. I think they're the better team, maybe not talent-wise, but just putting it all together on the field. I think Wingate is a very talented team on both offense and defense, but they just they just, like you said, Danny, they are you said this about a Delphi, and you've been saying it about this year. They're like the Chinese Army. They just keep coming at you. They just keep coming at you. And sooner or later, they break you. And that is basically what happened in this game. And I'm not saying as like Wingate was bad. I like I told you before, two things I would point out. Somewhere near the end of the second quarter and through the beginning of the fourth, third quarter, Wingate was causing some turnovers that were getting it back on offense because of, or unforced errors by limestone. And a lot of times the dogs could not capitalize on that. And I'm not and I'm not saying that they there was like bad things, just either a good save, just a missed shot. Yeah. Something happened that they could not capitalize on.

I I watched every game that Wingate's played. That's the fastest that they've played all year. And I remember talking to my son afterwards, and I was like, Man, you guys can play like that all the time. You know, like, yeah, why'd you get like lit up against limestone? You could he goes, Dad, we're just trying to match their energy.

Yeah, and well, and that's it's interesting. I I told you this too, and like I said, I'm not a coach. I could be reading this all wrong. In the first half, when Limestone scored so quickly, and they scored, they were up 4-1 at one time. Wingate, when they had the ball on offense, they didn't play slow, but they played patient.

Like they went for some quick shots instead of working it and being a little more patient and they because they had still had time. They weren't down by eight with ten minutes to go, right?

And so now that's just you know I'll tell you, you know, I kept looking at storier in the game. I kept looking at over it because I was on the player's side. So I could hear what he was saying, and I could see his body language. Let me tell you something. He was amped up. Oh, yeah. He was amped up. I bet. Especially when it was like 9-9 in the third, there was a couple of calls. A couple of non-calls. There was it was physical. It was a physical game. But there were like two or three non-calls against that Wingate didn't get that they should have gotten. I mean, uh there was one play where Kyle Spence got literally decapitated. The guy had his whole arm around his neck. No call. Yeah. No call. There was another play Wingate was trying to clear, had a guy on the sideline, passed to the sideline. It was a little high. The kid went to jump. Limestone player hit him in the back hard, sent him flying. They they lost the ball. But that's a that's illegal. You can't hit somebody in the back like that, and they didn't get that call, and Limestone got the ball. So, and then he saw Coach Boyle got his Irish up. He was like talking to the reps a few times. So let me tell you something. Both these coaches were into the game. And I saw a storyer, he was 9-9 with seven minutes left. He's like, God damn, you know, like, oh my god. And I could see it in him. But you know what? That's what good coaches do. They get they get amped up, you know. And I think, I think a lot of times teams emulate their coach.

Now, some of them were they had 30 second ones, which are always tough, so that makes a little bit of difference. Here's the interesting one, Danny, assists. And we talked about this, we disagree a little bit. Uh the Saints had 10 to 3 for Wingate, which kind of surprised me for Wingate, which does so well moving the ball and really do an assist. Now they didn't have a lot of things.

I still, I, I, you know, that was a one-goal loss to Tampa. If there was two minutes left in that game instead of 20 seconds, it might have been a different story. I'm telling you. I mean, that's how great that game was. And that's how good Limestone is. And now that the school is closing and all of these relationships are going to stop and change. Man, that's that's an awful, that's an awful. I wouldn't want to play limestone. Yeah, I don't know what I mean. I agree. They just they're on a mission now. They have And they got the team to do it. They got multiple players. Totally agree. They got multiple great players. Their defense is stout. They're they're they're Corey Lions in goal is as good as anybody in the country. He's, you know.

And and they have other pieces. And they they go to the semis and almost pull it off.

Let's start off with a story. The way I understand your cousin is battling leukemia, and you left your wingate team to take the time to find stem cells for his treatment. Can you walk us through like how that actually started, what the process was like? Did everyone in your family get tested to see if they were matches, how you found out, and just kind of walk us through how you got to leaving your team to do this?

Right, yeah. So, you know, he got diagnosed with leukemia early early January. Um, you know, it was terrible, terrible time to hear that. But um, you know, right off the bat, everyone started to test their blood type throughout our family to see if we were matched. So it started off with his siblings, um, his sister and uh brother, um, that were both negative. And so then it just, you know, kindly just worked down the family tree to my mom, who was uh this wasn't 100% match, but it said it was a match to where we all of her kids, my mother's kids, or my mother uh and my siblings could all uh you know go out and get tested and see if we're for a match for Ryan. And so we all go out, get our blood tested, and uh we c it took about a week and a half and it came back, and um my sister was the first one to come back and she was negative. And so we're like hoping like, all right, maybe me or my brother could be a perfect match, and and my brothers came back and was negative. We're like, all right, one last try, and it came back to me, and you know, 100% match, and that was uh you know, a big bright light.

Wow, what was that like and what were you thinking when you heard you were a match?

Uh you know, it it was you know kind of a grace from God, um, a little miracle, and you know, just from the heavens. And uh it was it was a really big I was like honored to be a match and you know help Ryan throughout this process and hopefully get him that this uh the white blood cells to to really uh fight this this horrible leukaemia that he has. And um I just you know loved every m minute of it and was glad that I was able to uh help him through this process.

34. What happened what happened that made him think that something was wrong, or did he just go for like a regular checkup or something and they found it? Or Right.

So yeah, he was uh film a little under the weather um like late late December and he went in went into work one day and he said he just laid on the ground and just was just a hot mess. He said he's he said he didn't feel well at all or anything, and so he went to go check to see if like he thought he had vertigo, vertigo. And uh he went to go check and they said no, he's got a a serious case of uh leukemia, and uh you know kind of took a little toll on the family, but um you know it all it's all working out well so far.

So what was the procedure like to get the stem cells? What was that procedure like?

Right, yeah. So it was in Charleston, we went down there, I had to get a series of shots uh for four days. So I went down there Thursday, Thursday night got shots, and um it's just a shot that boosts up your uh stem cells, basically. And um and so it got got to the got to Monday when the procedure was done, and there's this you know, you know, fancy hospital machine that Lord knows how expensive that is.

I don't know if you saw in the pictures, but there's um like you know, through the jugular vein, they took out um blood, obviously, and it circulated through the machine, and on it the machine can precisely take out the stem cells. So like in your red blood cells, there's a you know, red blood cell, white blood cell underneath, and then right in between is your stem cells. And so that machine knows how to perfectly pick out those and just extract those and it circulates the blood right back into my body like I never, like I never left.

There's uh I had a procedure like that several times called aphoresis, what they when they separated my white blood cells from my red blood cells, and they're putting my red blood cells back into me. Same thing, other arm, yeah, out one arm, back in the other.

Yeah, yeah, it wasn't wasn't too bad. I was sitting there in a chair for you know seven hours, yeah. Yeah, it was yeah, it was. There's a muscle. Let's do it.

What happens after that? Sorry, Kev. What happens after that? Now the stem cells come out of your body, goes through this machine, recirculates the blood back into your body. What do they do with the stem cells at that point? Is it go right to him right away, or is it going to talk about that? I don't know.

Right, yeah. So they uh so it was collecting an IV bag, obviously. Um, but every three hours they would come and test it and take it to the labs and make like get it like a exact uh still stem cell count to like see how much they have. And so um, yeah, so once they finished all that up, they said at 25 million, it's probably the most they've ever had in the hospital. The doctor told me that's the most he's ever seen in 44 years. Yeah, so basically setting records, setting records there. Um yeah. That's good.

I mean, they basically hooked them all up to those stem cells and basically immediately after the process attached them to those stem cells. Yeah, so it was really cool. And they only gave him um they started him off with five million stem cells, so he he has twenty million in reserve.

Would you have to do that again, maybe? Was is that a possibility?

No, no. See that that was the good thing. They said sometimes um people would have to come back and donate more because they don't have enough, but they said 25 million is more than enough. Okay, great. So yeah.

Yeah, so we actually just got word back from the doctors on Monday that his platelets um are going up now. So the white blood cells are reproducing and multiplying, and his numbers as of a week ago today were 0.0, and as of today they're 0.9, which is a huge increase in uh his white blood cell count, which is awesome. So it's starting to heal like some of the he's got some sores in his mouth, so it's starting to heal that up, and you know, just getting his immunity system back. Uh that's normal.

That's awesome. Yeah, that is awesome. That's no, now so we we we we talked about this. We talked about it. You the shots were on Thursday, you couldn't do anything until the procedure on Monday. I saw a picture of you smack dab in front of a TV screen watching your Wingate Bulldogs playing a game. What was that like for you to not be in the game, be somewhere else and watching it on screen as your teammates are playing?

Yeah, that that was a that was a surreal experience. It was uh obviously weird because you know you're so used to a schedule, you know, going through the week, practicing, film, getting ready for this game this week. But um, and it's funny because I I helped out with the scout team that week on uh for the offensive side. So I was playing a little bit of defense for them um to get them ready. But yeah, it was a super weird experience to see the the fellas get it done at LMU. But um, it was awesome. And I saw them come out with orange tape on their helmets and I broke down the tears. It was it was amazing.

Yeah, yeah. The Bulldogs are a special team, man. They they're like family, you know, and like even like at the limestone game the other night, just what Coach Boyle did during their seniors, you know, while their senior day was going on, we kind of stepped over to the side and let them do their thing. Um, so obviously I wanna stay around this area, but I have been talking to a company called Daimler that I had an internship with last last year, last summer. And um, so hopefully uh an opportunity comes across with uh with that company. So I've been keeping in contact. I mean they said they got a few jobs open job openings and maybe some internships, so hopefully fall into the spot and uh go from there.

Uh so it's it's a Freightliner. So they'll they own Freightliner, Thomas, buses, Western Star, and um I did a bunch of like market research, marketing, you know, data analysis, all all sorts of uh you know, business for them. It was it was a really cool experience. I mean I I learned a lot through that internship alone that has taught me, you know, key aspects that you need to know in the work field.

Yeah, it's it's a cool town, man. I like Charlotte a lot. I love it, actually. I mean, from where I'm coming from, and I go to Charlotte, it was like it was in the 80s. I just didn't even want to come home. I'd be honest with you, I didn't want to come home. I love it down there. I I really do. And hey, my son Sean, he graduated and never came home. He stayed in Charlotte. He's got his boys, all Wingate boys, you know, all guys that he played, you know, with and went to war with. And some are older and some are younger, but they're all together, man. It's pretty pretty cool thing. They have a cool group, you know, and they're all together. They're at they come to the home games, they come to the crown, you know. It's a good bunch of guys. And you know, Wingate and Coach Boyle kind of does that. He it's just it's so family-oriented how how he has these teams. I I can't even describe it. I mean, just everybody that I've spoken to that has graduated talks so much about Coach Boyle and how he's such a family guy. And I mean, I had a player tell me he was like a father figure to me, that he taught me how to be a man. That's what one player said about Coach Boyle. How many guys would even say that? You know what I mean? Like, you know, he taught me to be a man, you know. So I I mean, just all the accolades and that he's got and everything with Wingate. So we've got a couple of games left. We got more than two, kid. I'll tell you that right now. We got more than two. Don't put that into your head, all right? So let me ask you a question. How'd you get started in lacrosse? Because South Carolina, where you're from, Teagan K, right?

Right, yeah. So funny story. Uh I mean, I was a big football guy. I wanted to play football, you know, throughout college, everything. Um, but uh one of my brother's best friends uh played lacrosse and um his older brother was on the high school team at the time. And I was like, what is that thing? It's it was lacrosse stick. I was like, let me let me give it a try. And you know, played around with it for about a week and felt felt a little bit of interest, and there was a little club club team going around in the uh area. Tried that out, found really good interest. I I really wanted to play attack, but then you know, coach put coach put a pull in my hands immediately and uh you know never looked back.

That was probably seventh, eighth grade, right there. Wow.

So then how did you get recruited to Wingate?

Um, so yes. I mean it was Wingate's local. I mean, I'm 40 minutes from home. So, you know, I reached out to a bunch of local local colleges, so I was Queens, you know, pretty much all the SAC schools. Well Queens at when they were in the SAC at the time.

Um, you know, LR, Wingate. I mean, I I've heard such great things and I've heard a lot of people love it from all these programs. So I reached out and, you know, talked with Coach Boyle and you know, found a strong interest in this school because he he sounded like he's such a genuine guy, which he is, and you know, looked back and looking back now, I've I was so glad I chose this school. And um was glad that I was able to come here and you know do what I can do.

And um, so he I think well we had such a young defense at the time, you know. You had Nicarino that left earlier that fall. Yeah, and then we had Birdie Baker that was a sophomore at the time, you know. We still had a young defense, so he was just probably just trying out things, and you know, I went on the field and never looked back and you know, gave it all my all. And I got my first start at that Merceris, so it was awesome.

Yeah, yeah. I've watched every game, every game that you've played, and I've been impressed pretty much. There's something that you do on that field. There's at least one thing that you do on that field every game that I just go, Oh my god, I can't believe you just did that. But but I call you the diesel because when you clear the ball, man, guys don't even guys just get out of the way. They just like scatter like I'm going that way. You're an amazing clearer for your size, 6'4, 240, man. Like you come down there. It's just amazing to watch you play. It really is. And Coach Boyle's always been known for his defenses. Wingate Bulldogs have been known for their defenses. But you I think that when you got there, you kind of took took that defense to to the next level. I really do. And again, I've watched every game that you've played in, and I've been impressed in every single game at least once by one thing that you do. It's been just it's been a great ride to watch you, Peyton. And um I just, you know, gonna miss you. Definitely gonna miss you, man.

And you know, I can't take it all, take all the credit, you know, because I was working with Willie Grefield, probably one of the best offensive players to come in D2, you know, going against him every day. You know, you go from high school to college, and there's just a huge gap of you know, playing style, like how how much faster the game is in college. And um, you know, playing against these guys throughout these four years of you know, just made me better each and every year. So I loved it every single minute of it.

Yeah, it was a great professor, and then we also did a it's called a stock track. So we we basically traded stocks uh virtually. I mean, no no money obviously in the in the system, but you had five million dollars to start with the year and you know, deposit money into the stocks and you know by the end of the year, see how much money you made from each stock by selling, um and selling bonds and everything, mutual funds.

So anytime I meet with him, he we always talk some ball and you know, a little stuff outside of class. So it's good to catch up with him, you know. And he he cares about our team, he always asks, he he comes to a few of our games, he asks how we're doing. You know, really great guys, good to meet you.

He was uh he lives in my neighborhood and he he played at Mercer. Um he was a midfielder, so he you know, he'd practice me. He was two years older than me. He'd always dodged me. I'd I'd asked him to go 1v1s with him, you know, make me a better and we did that throughout all high school and we won a state championship together, and it was it was great.
