Welcome,
Intro
SPEAKER_04welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Grease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's Lacrosse. I'm your co-host, Kevin Sentrum, and with me as always is the master behind the mayhem, Danny Moran. Hey Danny, how's it going?
SPEAKER_10Good, Kev. How's it going with you, man?
SPEAKER_04Just living the dream, living the dream. Less than a week away from the championship, which you and I will both be at.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I'm excited, man. I'm excited to go to Philly again. Last time was great. This should be even better.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, a lot of fun. It'll be fun trying to catch up with all the fans as they tailgate and watching the games. It'll be really good. But we got a lot of work to do. Let's get to the games. This week we're gonna mix it up a bit, Danny. We usually do the week in review, then games to watch, followed by guests. You know, we only have a few games left to talk about, and we have several guests waiting the wing. So why don't we discuss a regional final and then bring on the team that won that final and is now headed to Philly. Then we'll rinse and repeat before we get to any predictions we may have for the final. Sounds good. Sounds good.
North Region Final
SPEAKER_04All right. Well, let's start up north a Delphi against St. Anselm. What'd you think of the game, Kev? It's interesting. When I watch this game, a Delphi pulls it out 12-9. There's a couple things that we talked about last episode that either came to fruition or kind of changed things. First of all, we talked about experience. St. A's, it was their first time ever in the Final Four. Right. So they're a little, they're probably a little nervous. Secondly, we also talked about face-off and made the assumption that St. A's would just dominate. But Adelphi actually won about 30% of the face-offs. That's the most for them against St. A's this year in the three games they played them. And come to find out, they had like three face-off guys that were all injured during the year. Kyle Stark, one of them, actually came back from an ACL injury in the in the fall and won some face-offs. They won enough, some critical face-offs, just to not let St. A's get in any kind of rhythm.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, they were surprisingly pretty good at the X, weren't they? Yeah. They've been getting dominated all year. I mean, and uh they still they still came out on the short end of the stick on the face-offs. I mean, but still they they were able to get more than usual.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and and then I don't know if you noticed, uh Dylan Renner was Dylan Renner again. He stopped almost every outside shot from 12 to 15 yards. And if you looked when the St. A's offensive player shot from about 12-15 and he made a stop, he just stared them down like are you kidding me? You're even gonna try that against me.
SPEAKER_10Dude, he's a stud, man. He's been the catalyst behind a Delphi all year. I mean, the one consistent, you know, in guy and element of a Delphi's game has been in goal in Dylan Renner. He's amazing. Yeah, he's just been amazing, Kev. I don't even know any other word to describe his.
SPEAKER_04Well, their whole whole defense was tenacious and and locked in, right?
SPEAKER_10They are, but when you think about when you think about like the consistency of the team, because like offensively, like maybe Logan Tucker doesn't have a game, but Damon Hall does. And maybe you know, Kyle Lewis doesn't have a game, but Steinbeck does. And then when Steinbeck doesn't have a game, but you know, Braden Donald throws three or four goals up. Like they've been kind of all over the place offensively. Defensively, they've been great all year, one of the better teams in the country, in my opinion, defensively. Just they they forced teams out of their rhythm, they forced teams into make taking bad shots, and they were doing that again.
SPEAKER_04They they could not uh St. A's could not play them 6v6.
SPEAKER_10Couldn't do it until the fourth quarter. Uh yeah, you know what?
SPEAKER_04When Coach Giamano let Jack Andrews kind of start to run the offense, he was playing short 60 mini for most of the year and would one trend run transition, but he won it, got a goal, and they started to do some things with him, and they they got some goals, but not enough. It was 10-4 after three. You can't score on a defense, you can't score at least six goals in one quarter against them.
SPEAKER_10But you know what, St. A's offensively really honestly didn't play badly. They were able to get shots off. It's just that they ran into Dylan Renner. He just doesn't let in, he's like a bouncer at the club, man. He doesn't let anybody in, man.
SPEAKER_04The way I saw it is they got shots off, but they didn't get good shots off. They didn't get a lot of good shots off. No, a lot of them were people were able to get shots off. Yeah, but I think a lot of them were forced. They were in the end trying to get some offense going. And first of all, you can't do it from outside. They did get some good scores on the inside on the in on the crease, and they won't, but it was only 10-4. They only scored four goals after three. Yeah, then they poured it on, then they poured it on, and they were getting some good goals. But like I said, they in the first two games, they beat in scorings uh a Delphi nine to three in the two previous games in the second half. They beat them five to two in the fourth quarter, but they were shut out in the third. So, really, if you look at that, and and the Delphi scored three, it was five to five. They still broke even with them.
SPEAKER_10You know what? I just felt that I I just never thought a Delphi was gonna lose that game. I mean, from the first five minutes of the game. From the first five minutes of the game, I was just like, you know what? A Delphi's better, they're gonna get this game. Let's see if St. A's can keep it close. And it was tough for them to keep it close because the last two games it was a one-goal game. You know what I mean? Right. And and that it could have went either way. A lot of turnovers in the last game for St. A's. St. A's kept the turnovers down a little bit this time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was 14 to 13.
SPEAKER_10Right, exactly. So, you know, it was a little bit more evenly matched. St. A's outshot them 54 to 41. But again, you know, the defense was forcing them into bad shots and whatnot. Um EMO, one for four for St. A's, zero for two for Adelphi. But you know what? Adelphi is going to the national championship. They've been just beating up everybody. And with Dylan Renner in goal, I was just 65% save percentage in that game.
SPEAKER_04I think that's his average for the year. Unbelievable.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, it's crazy. So what do we got? We got Jack Andrews for St. A's, had three, Jake Davis had three, Colin Mulvey with two, Joel Lombardi with one, and the freshman in goal, seven, eleven saves, not bad. Uh, for Delphi, Logan Tucker today had a great game. Three goals. Braden Donlin, the sophomore from Plain Edge High School, right here on Long Island, Kev. Uh, three goals. Brian Horinsky had two goals. Eamon Hall had two goals. Kyle Lewis, who lit it up last week, only had one goal this week. Uh, Kyle Steinbach with one goal and Renner in goal with 17 saves, man.
SPEAKER_04Yep, so they move on. It'll be really good to watch that game and how they match up the second time against LR.
Adelphi
SPEAKER_04Okay, Danny, now it's time to welcome in the Adelphi Panthers. The Panthers, winners of the North Region, which we just finished discussing. And they did it in a convincing and third win of the season against St. Anselm in that final. Yes, sir. We've talked about this team just continues to produce and produce and produce throughout the whole season.
SPEAKER_10Kev, one of my favorite teams to watch in all of Division II. They're really, really good, man. They get after it on defense. They got studs all over the field on offense, and they got a big time stud in goal in Dylan Renner. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So let's welcome in. With us tonight is Coach Brian Volby, Middy, Kyle Steinbach, and captains Dylan Renner, Ryan Butler, and Eamon Hall. Hey guys, what's up, fellas?
SPEAKER_10Well, are you going back back to the dance? How's it feel?
SPEAKER_06It was good to be dancing. Oh, I'm good.
SPEAKER_10Kyle, I know you missed some time this year. You're back, you're playing. How's it feel to get the Panthers back into the big dance?
SPEAKER_06You know, it's uh it's surreal. It still hasn't really uh registered yet, but um, I'm just excited to be here with my teammates and to be out in the field after missing so much of the season. It's it's great, and uh I'm excited.
SPEAKER_04That's awesome. Let me switch it to you, coach. I'll have to say it right now. Danny and I, we're ready to eat some humble pie. We did the same thing last year. We kind of predicted St. Ansom for the win. I actually even said on the podcast that's probably what you wanted, because then I you know I always get it wrong, so that you guys can see so you should you can really thank me. So, but the floor is yours. Go ahead. We'll eat some humble pie. How did it feel to be back now after so many years coming back into the final?
SPEAKER_00On ET. Uh you just say the course and you keep doing what you're doing for us. We appreciate that. Keep keep going that way. Uh it's been nice. Um, uh, the boys work really hard. We've had uh you know, we had a a grueling uh preseason uh with our schedule. The kids worked hard, we had injuries, and we kind of just fought through it, and nobody really gave each other any flack. And uh it's a testament to the boys themselves uh for staying together and working hard and doing the things that they need to do to keep us together as a team. We could do it as coaches, we can do certain things, but ultimately it's their team and they control it. We tell them that all the time. And it's been a while since we've been back, it's been 2011. Um we're just happy to be back and you know get going.
SPEAKER_04Job's not finished yet, so job's not finished, but depending on who I pick, we you may be a guarantee.
SPEAKER_10Coach, this the team has always been solid in every single area, you know, offensively, defensively. But this year, you've struggled at face-offs a lot, and you've managed to come back and win games where you guys were really getting dominated at face-off. How you been doing that?
SPEAKER_00Well, traditionally we've been pretty good at the X. Uh, we've had a ton of FOGOs. We've had Mark Andajak, we've had Gregiscusion, who's coaching with us, uh, and there's other guys, Jesse Kalamusi. There's there's a ton of guys that have been through our program that have done a great job. Um, we had a couple injuries with our phogos in the beginning of the year. Uh we couldn't get one in between, but we just kind of rolled with the punches. Uh guys have stepped up and you know have gone in there for us, and we just mix it up. And uh regardless of what happens there, I think uh we just we've stuck together and we just we I think we took a negative legitimate turned into a positive, and it's made us better in better areas as the team than it, I think, if we had a traditional face-off guy where you know sometimes you can waste the ball a bit away and you know take risks on defense. Now it's like uh our turnovers are pretty much our down, our uh defense is playing solid, and you know we got killing in the cage. So we let him do what we need to do.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I I was gonna say that, coach. The it's really your, and I'll ask this to you, Ryan. It's it's your defense, obviously, that's got to step up to create that offense, right? When you don't win face-offs, it starts with your defense. So, Ryan, one of the reasons we picked St. A's was really because it's so tough to beat a team like that three times in one season. And then, like Danny was talking about the the face-off X. So, going into that game, what was your mindset going up against them on how you I mean, last last game before that, I mean, was it the same mindset? We we didn't win one face-off, we still beat them, so we've got the defense that can do it. What were you guys thinking?
SPEAKER_03Um, I mean, realistically, coming into the game, we kind of knew that we have to play the same way that we've played those other two games and just um replicate what we've been doing, but just a little bit better. Um, because obviously we didn't know that we were they were gonna have what 20 plus extra possessions. So everyone's extremely crucial um to us. And you know, being able to communicate with each other a lot more than we have been was extremely important in that game. Uh, knowing where our two sides were, our three sides were, um, and knowing that if we're giving up those outside shots, we got the big man in net to back us up, so it's a little bit more comforting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they could not. We talked about this. Anything outside was a given. It wasn't, in fact, I have to ask you this question, Dylan. They shot 12, 15 yards out, you stopped it, and then you stared down the offensive player. I mean, come on now. Were you just that upset that they'd even try to do that against you?
SPEAKER_09Uh, I think it just comes from how a competitor I've always have been. I've always been one of those people who kind of looks at myself as like the underdog. So I always say my best part of my game is those step downs. And I always tell our defense let's pack in, and at a certain point, they get to the 15, 13, 14 yards, trust me. If it goes in, I'll take the blame 100%. So, I mean, like we played them three times, like you said, and I just felt like towards the third game, you're gonna keep stepping down. Like, I'm gonna keep seeing them better and better every single time. And then I think it just comes that whole stare down with a lot of heart and just caring about playing, starting from the game for sure.
SPEAKER_10You know what? I I felt like the defense was just forcing St. St. Ace's got a good offensive team. Those boys can play, they can sling the rock. They're no joke, man. They're no joke. But I just felt that your defense was just forcing them into bad shots, just making them uncomfortable. And and then when they did get inside, you were just stopping them. Like, is is the ball like a big old freaking beach ball to you right now? Are you seeing it that good?
SPEAKER_09Um, I mean, like, I would definitely say the ball hasn't changed, maybe the mindset and just feel uncomfortable. I mean, like you said, we have great defense, and when you have a great defense like that in front of you, it makes those shots ten times easier and keeps my confidence. And I know that not every shot's gonna be the best shot when I when I have a defense like that in front of me. So as long as I can just make the saves I have to make, it'll be fun.
SPEAKER_00Defense starts on a ride, by the way. These guys ride, these guys ride like animals, they're like banshees out there, they're a pack of wolves.
SPEAKER_10No, you guys cause a lot of turnovers. You run, you know what? You just the IQ of the guys on the team, coach. That's what that pops out to me. Then your athleticism, too, man. Right. Even let you know, your defense is stout, but your offense, even when you're making stops and you're losing face-offs, when your offense gets the ball, they're putting the ball in the back of the net. And it's not just one guy. It's like if it ain't aiming, it's Braden Donald, the sophomore kid stepping up. Kyle Lewis, sick athlete, man. He can throw four or five goals up. I mean, just Kyle and just just all the different guys that you have offensively. It just your guys are tough out, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then there are several games, several, you just said it, coach, several games where you guys just own the middle of the field. Like it was apparent, and you could see it in the in the turnover rates. But I have to ask Amon one question. Can you please explain to me the Selly?
SPEAKER_11Oh man. You guys don't get it?
SPEAKER_04I I'm seeing rocks. What do you care about? What's the end thing? I mean, is it just in the bag?
SPEAKER_11Oh, it's it's there's something to it. Do you if you had a guess? What do you think it would be? No way to get it.
SPEAKER_04I'm not gonna get it.
SPEAKER_11That's why I'm the beauty's in like you can get it. It came from uh a couple of our freshmen that we saw. They did something. They did it at practice. Like, that is hilarious. It's uh it's the Grin Steel on Christmas. Stealing Christmas. Oh, I love it.
SPEAKER_04I love it. All right. Pretty damn good um impression there, I have to admit.
SPEAKER_10The college laxellies are getting more and more and more creative.
SPEAKER_11It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_10How big are you, Amon? What how tall are you and how much do you weigh? I'm 6'2, probably like 200 pounds. Damn, son. That's like a diesel coming at you. That's just like a diesel coming at you. I wouldn't want to step in front of you coming down coming down the alley, kid. I'd be like, go ahead. Maybe maybe throw a stick at your hip or something, maybe. But you guys just a really good offensive team, a really stout defensive team. You guys belong. You know, I still think I was wrong about the same as I was just saying, you know, I agree with Kevin. It's tough for a team to beat a team three times, especially a good offensive team. And especially a team you only beat by one, and they had 18 or 19 turnovers in the last game. They kept their turnovers down, and then you beat them like even worse this time.
SPEAKER_00So I think sorry to cut you off. They uh our caps go off to them. They made us so much better by playing them three times. It's uh our caps go off to them. You know, the focus going into their game and stuff like that. Those guys, they run a hell of a program. They had and they had a their core group was a hell of a group for the last four years. Those kids were unbelievable.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I agree with you. I agree with you on that. So now we're going to Philly. We're going to Philly. That's uh, you know, a Belfight always pulls a ton of alumni to their games. Coach, what's what's in the back pocket for the alumni going down to Philly? You got buses coming down from Garden City or what?
SPEAKER_00Uh I think so. I think there's a couple of groups of alums taking buses down and uh gonna do the day down there. And uh, you know, uh we've been getting a couple phone calls. Uh it's been uh pretty pretty nice that they called us and reached out and they're just telling supporting us and just telling us good luck and they're keeping the conversation moving, which has been great. It hasn't been too much. And we're we couldn't be prouder that they're coming to support us because you know, for the last 75 years of lacrosse at Adelphi, you know, they they've helped us and they've they've done our they've put our history in there. So and they do a great job supporting us. So we're just grateful that they're coming.
SPEAKER_10Kevin, if you've ever been to an Adelphi game, they pack the stands every game. They come and drove.
SPEAKER_04When they they actually showed, you saw it when they were on the broadcast, right? They showed the fans the the stands and they were packed, which is just awesome to see. They they don't let a guy from Northern Virginia in at that point, you know, and it's not gonna do it. SRO, standing room only for you, son, in the back.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I went to the pace game. I was supposed to meet some pace parents, right? Because of the podcast, and I ran into a ton of wingate parents. So I was like, man, you know, I forget how many L Long Island guys are at Wingate, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_10So I was I was with PayPal and a couple of those guys, and uh just just a good bunch of guys, man, just all across lovers, you know, and they're all like bigger Delphi fans as well.
SPEAKER_04So let me let me ask you this question, Kyle. I'm curious because Danny and I have said this. The two best goalies in Division II are Dylan Renner and the guy you're facing, Rob Pensibeni. Hands down, best in the north, best in the south. And now you're facing him again. I want you to know where you were you did you play in the first game against him, or were you out?
SPEAKER_06I did not. I was out.
SPEAKER_04So how do you go up? What do you guys do to prepare for that, or you just kind of do what you usually do and play it, get ready for a Delphi lacrosse?
SPEAKER_06You know, it uh I think this year we've taken a little bit of a different mindset on offense, and we've been sharing the ball a lot more than we have in previous years here. And hats off to the coaches for putting that mindset on it. It has to go back to the face-off, actually, because the less possessions we've really been taking care of the ball and sharing it really well. And how like to shoot against runner every day in practice, he stares the same thing.
SPEAKER_04Does he stare you down when you shoot from 15?
SPEAKER_06He'll save one in practice and stare me down and love it. So uh that's awesome. Yeah, no, it's we'll we just gotta play our game and stick to sharing the rock, and uh everyone has their uh piece in the puzzle and we'll get it done.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, Lenore Ryan's a very, very good team. They're very well coached. You guys, it was a 7-3 game last time, which is in in itself shocking. You know, it's just a defensive jogger not of a game. Um, do you expect the same kind of thing, like a low-scoring, defensive-oriented game? Uh, Rob, what do you think?
SPEAKER_03Um, I mean, um, if we play uh how we've been playing all year, uh pretty fundamentally sound. Um, you know, uh being able to play tight, you know, again, give up those open shots. I mean, I I do believe that we could play as well as we played them the first time. You know, we've had we've had months to grow as a team. Um changes. Um, the way we look at how we're playing uh differently is also a pretty big part. Um so yeah, I mean, I'm looking forward to it. But I think if we play the same way that we've played, uh, with all the things that we've learned, I think we have a very good chance to hold them down uh to the amount that we did earlier.
SPEAKER_04Well said, well said. I'm excited for this game. That's all I can say. I can't wait to get there. Danny and I will both be there. I'll be there coming in Friday. We'll try to be at your practice on Saturday, and then we'll see you guys Sunday. It's gonna be a phenomenal game. It's a great matchup.
SPEAKER_10Can't wait. It's awesome, man.
SPEAKER_04Appreciate it.
SPEAKER_10Excited. It'll be fun. Kyle Steinbach, Rob Butler, Eamon Hall, Dylan Renner, Coach Fulpe, the uh Adelphy Panthers going to the dance. First time in a long time. Like again, you guys deserve it. You earned it. You balled out all year. I've watched a lot of your games this year, most of mostly all of them, probably. And I would always say to Kevin, did you see Renner? Did you see what he did today? Did you see what he did? The kid, you've just been the catalyst for this team, kid. You really haven't. Continued success, Miniola. High school kid, you know, Long Island kid. Represent. All right, guys. Good luck this week. We'll see you down in Philly.
SPEAKER_09Appreciate it. Thank you all. Thanks for having us.
South Region Final
SPEAKER_04All right, Danny. Let's move on to the South Region Final. A battle. This was another game of runs. And I think another game where it seemed to me that LR had to raise its game to another level to come back and win. They pull it out with 15-14. What'd you do?
SPEAKER_10That was a quality lacrosse game. Really good game between two great teams. I mean, uh Tampa looked really good in the beginning of the game, didn't they? They looked good throughout the game. Really throughout the game.
SPEAKER_04But you know, the first half, I mean when they they go on a 4-0 run, and you think, oh my gosh, I didn't expect that. I did not expect them. What I was shocked at was that they scored 10 goals against Lenore Ryan's defense in the first half. And I'm like, this is gonna be like a 20-goal game. Yeah. And that's what I mean about Lenore Ryan turning the switch on and going to another level because they held him to four goals in the second half.
SPEAKER_10Well, you know, last week we talked about Lenore Ryan just being slow and steady and being patient and just working the offense, working the defense, making saves when they had to. Now, in the beginning of this game, my man Alex Palmer at the dot was doing really, really good for Tampa. They were getting, they were getting possessions off the face-off. That changed a little bit in the second half. The Paulis was in there for a while, then Mancini came in and they started to turn the turn the tide a little bit on the faceoffs back to Lenore Ryan's favor in that second half. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's almost the same thing that they did what Mancini did and their team did against Limestone at the end of the third quarter, beginning of the fourth quarter, once again against Limestone a week ago.
SPEAKER_10Man, Tampa's got a bunch of studs out there offensively and defensively. We haven't spoken about them much this year, you know, for some reason. I don't know why, you know, but they're just a really, really well-oiled machine.
SPEAKER_04That was a great game. I mean, really, you didn't know who was going to win that game. I mean, if you look at it, you know, Tampa's up 10-7 at half. LR is down 11-7 uh in the third, and then they score four in a row to tie it up, and then they add another, take the lead. Then Tampa scores on a man up, and they went like three for four. They had some unbelievable uh EMO stats. Then it's 12-12 after three, and they're just they're just going back and forth on goals.
SPEAKER_10Just great game, man. Just good team, you know, great players on both sides getting after it. They both knew what was at stake. It was a trip to the national championship.
SPEAKER_04Tampa has a chance at the end to to score, and they Pensa Benny gets hit with the ball, he has to go out, they bring in Hoffman, they take one shot, he doesn't have to stop it because that then Pensa Benny gets to go back in, and Tampa has another shot at it, and they can't convert. I mean, it was that close.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, it was an exciting game.
SPEAKER_04I was ready for that one to go to overtime, to be honest.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, you know what? I it wasn't gonna surprise me if it did, but you know what? Again, LR is good, bro, man.
SPEAKER_04Like I said, I in that second half, it's almost like, all right, we got to take it up one more notch, guys.
SPEAKER_10They flipped that switch like we were talking about in the last couple of weeks. Just think of what LR's had to do in the last four weeks, Kev. Wingate, double overtime, limestone for the stock championship, right? Limestone again in the first and second round of the playoffs, and then Tampa. Wingate, limestone, limestone, Tampa, four games in a row. Holy mackerel is all I can say.
SPEAKER_04I know. Crazy, crazy. But so then you have got Lenore Ryan, Will Canada with one goal, two assists, Robert Walker, four goals. Who? Who we talked about that we who you who's gonna come in that you don't usually hear. Who Ryan's not getting another name? Three goals, one assist. Jared did you see the one John Walker had?
SPEAKER_10Did you still be over the back? It was like from seven, eight yards away. It was like crazy. That's like one of those coaches, like, oh no, no, no. Oh, yeah, one of those goals.
SPEAKER_04Well, it was so fast, I don't think you had time to say, Oh, no, no.
SPEAKER_10I mean, really, I mean I wonder how many goals Walker had all year coming into that game. It can't be a lot because we don't we haven't spoken about him very much.
SPEAKER_04And then Walker, right? Like guys, like Evan Donovan Donovan Powell, who usually is there. He just he had a goal and an assist, which Pat only. That's still great, but you've got other guys that are stepping up.
SPEAKER_10Seeing a big difference in Powell's game from freshman to sophomore year. He's really he's starting to come into his own. You can see the confidence growing in young Donnie Powell.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, okay. Then on Tampa side, just to even the score, because you said we don't talk to him about that much. Andrew Malani with three goals, two assists, Canyon Burch, three goals. Owen Doug, two goals, one assist, and Ryan Kemp, two goals.
SPEAKER_10Rasmus Bolish, friend, and papa each had one. How about McAldo in goal? I thought he played great. He did. He played a great game. It was eight saves.
SPEAKER_04It was a barn burner of a game.
SPEAKER_10And Pennsylvania had nine saves. I mean, the goalies came down, you know. There was one or two that Pennsylvania, you could tell he was pissed that got by him.
SPEAKER_04It's a question to ask him. I mean, I'm curious. So, like, what did Tampa do that they were able to get 10 goals off of that defense in the first half?
SPEAKER_10Yeah, it was a because you know what? They were out hustling an LR, I think, in the first half. They were really they were playing fast, they were playing really aggressive offensively in transition. They were just moving the ball. Did guys were just moving all over the field? They were Tampa was very impressive, Kevin. And you know what? Haven't watched Tampa that much. That's maybe that's why I haven't spoken about them. I haven't watched them a whole lot.
SPEAKER_04And I've watched them near the end lately, and I knew they were ready. And this game showed it. Both teams. And like I said, once again, Lenore Ryan steps up, goes to another level, wins the game.
SPEAKER_10Just think this, man. LR's been to three out of the last four.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_10National Championships. Has Coach Paradine started a dynasty there in uh Hickory? I think you can call it that right now. I think you can call it that. It was a really good game between uh two of the best teams in the country. Arguably one and two. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. The following segment of Increase is sponsored by LaxJobs.us. Lenoir Rhyne
SPEAKER_04Now up are a few folks from the Lenore Rhine Bears. Coach Greg Peradine, goalie, Rob Pensibeni, and captains Evan Voss and Joey Masson. Welcome, guys. Thanks for watching. What's up, fellas? I have to say one thing though. I almost feel like this is becoming a tradition. My wife was asking, have you had Coach Peradine on? I'm like, three times last year. It's like, now it's like, you know, it's that we just every year.
SPEAKER_01Hey, we'll take that. We'll take that.
SPEAKER_10Yeah. Kevin and I were just discussing, Coach. We think that LR is starting a dynasty, man. You've been to three out of the last four. You know, Hickory is uh really uh starting to uh create a dynasty. What do you think?
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, it's a senior class. I mean, these these guys, since they were freshmen, a bunch of these guys started in that championship game uh you know against Le Moine a few years ago. And you know, I told I told him today we met. I said, this is the most decorated class we've ever had. And you know, to go to three championship games is unbelievable. Um, you know, I after the first one in 21, you know, I'm like, are we ever gonna get back there again? You know, and to have an opportunity to go back to our third in four years is sort of mind-numbing, but it's a credit to these guys.
SPEAKER_04So let me ask you something, Coach, because it like you just said, that is tough to do. And I think it's especially tough to go back to back going back after you won it, even more so because you've reached the pinnacle. How did you keep your team motivated to stay at that same level? Because you did it all season long.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, I I think a lot of it is the experience. I mean, you you can't you can't negate the experience of having guys who've been there before.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then, you know, you add you add the element of some grad kids who I mean, we you know, we've got we've got some grad kids, quite honestly, who played at you know, Lafayette, Holy Cross, some places where they hadn't seen a whole lot of success. So really try to, and they came here to to get to that point. So I think that's a motivating factor for a lot of our guys. Like, hey, these guys came here to help us, and uh, they haven't done a whole lot of winning. Let's let's let's get them there.
SPEAKER_04Well, I tell you, I tell you, coach, my alma mater is Holy Cross, and you could beat the pants off of Holy Cross every day, and that hurts me personally, but you know, that's what I think about D2, as you know, anyway.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but a lot of it, I think it has to do with experience and just um you know, really just being focused every day. They they they came back, this group just came back to be the best team that they could be. I know that's cliche, but that's what they did. That's what they did. And and we never had to really refocus them. I think after we took the limestone loss, you know, that like some people say it it's good to lose, and that that was a good loss for us.
SPEAKER_10Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, Joey, let me let me ask you a question. What's it like to have that target on your back and have to bring that energy almost week in and week out? What's it like for you?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I mean, having that target on your back is obviously just an honor in the first place because it's there for a reason. But I think it's just added motivation. It's like what Coach just said that we're never satisfied and we know that target's on our back, and that no matter who we play, they're going to give it their best shot against us, and that we always have to be ready. And I think that's shown throughout the season that we start out slow sometimes, and that's because teams are giving us their best shot and we have to step up. So I think it just it always keeps us on our toes and keeps us working hard in practice in the film room and in everything we do.
SPEAKER_10Now, Evan, how do you keep that energy going offensively? You're like the energizer bunny.
SPEAKER_04And as a captain, that was my question. You uh coach talked about it from his perspective, but I'm really interested from a captain's perspective. You don't have to work on these guys who have been there for four years, right? But what about the the younger players you're trying to bring along?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I mean, we've had a good rotation throughout the whole year, I think, with our personnel. Um, it's just everybody's eager to learn, including myself. You know, I saw things learn. Um I think just listening to Coach P and trying to take in everything that he's telling us week in, week out, and just focusing on ourselves. That's kind of been a big thing. Obviously, we've kind of enjoyed being you know the hunted as compared to last year. Um it brings a lot of energy, like you guys just talked about, but you know, we thrive under pressure. Obviously, last two games had to come back and win the game and be our best in the third and fourth quarter. So I think just focusing on ourselves and trying to be a sponge and taking everything, Coach is saying.
SPEAKER_10Right. Hey Rob, let me ask you a question. I was I was at the wing gate game. Oh, by the way, coach, the field is beautiful, man. It's it the the stadium is gorgeous.
SPEAKER_01It's really turned out great.
SPEAKER_10It did really, it really turned out great. But Rob, let me ask you something. In that wing gate game that went into double overtime, what were you thinking to yourself in that in that gauge there?
SPEAKER_05It's for me, it's just like always trying like stay in a steady state. So even in overtime, it's just like the only we joke about this in the locker room where like don't overcomplicate the goalie job, like it's c ball, save ball. And just like if you make the save, you go back to the flow chart, it's the same thing. And if you don't make the save, you go back to the flow chart, and it's still C ball, save ball. So just keeping the heart rate low, trusting the guys in front of me, and then when it happens, just when the shot comes, just be ready to go.
SPEAKER_10Now on Saturday, I saw you getting a little frustrated. Tampa threw a couple up real quick. On yeah, I saw you get frustrated. I never really see you get frustrated. You always kind of stay cool, calm, and collected back there. What were you thinking of yourself then?
SPEAKER_05Well, I just knew that like, I mean, that's a high-powered offense, and we had a lot of respect for him. And like I like coming out of the games pretty hot, and I started wasn't I didn't save the ones that I necessarily wanted. And I'm okay with that going into this weekend because it means I'm due for a good game. We got we got all the shitters out, and my boys had my back to back me up, but that's uh even when the shots are coming in or in a good position, like I think I'm one of the goalies that stands there and will still still keep it out of the net. And when I wasn't backing up my teammates, I was I was getting frustrated with myself a little, but they know it's just hold yourself to a high standard on the field. And I like backing my my defensemen up as much as I can, and I didn't really steal some early, so I was really trying to to get that going. Oh, you did in the second half.
SPEAKER_04Danny, I just talked about that. If I went back to your your schedule and your record, there's only three times this year that teams have scored more than 10 goals. And and Tampa did that on you on in the first half, which shocked me. Shocked me. So they must have been showing something different to get you a little bit out of place, but then you guys just locked it down. Joey, what what would you say in in those games and the limestone games where you like you guys even talked about, have to come from behind? And you seem like you guys take it up to another notch. It's like you're you're at this level, you're a little bit behind. It's also you just you switch to put on a switch and you take it to another notch. One, do you think I'm reading that right, or am I just making stuff up for the podcast? And then two, how do games against those teams help you going in it to the to the final in Philly?
SPEAKER_08No, I mean, yeah, you're definitely spot on the past couple games. Like we've definitely started off slow, and I think it just comes down to experience, is what really keeps us level is we know at the end of the day that our team is gonna have our own run. Other teams are gonna have their runs, and if another team comes out and has their run first, it's okay because we'll have ours. And the defense, we trust each other. We trust Rob, we trust our face-off guys, we trust our offense, and we trust our coaches, and we know that we're just gonna stick to the game plan, stick to the basics, and do what we're good at, and it's all gonna work out, and that's what always happens. Even if it's not down to the last second or like the wing gate game in double overtime, it's gonna work out and we have each other's back. And a big thing is just staying calm, like Rob was just saying. Yesterday during the game, when we had to get a big stop with about a minute left, we all just brought it in in a huddle and we just took a big deep breath together, and and we just played because at the end of the day, it's lacrosse, and you just need to have fun and be there with your friends and be present, and that's what we're doing.
SPEAKER_10Excellent. Coach, we just had uh Chris Ryan on last week. And uh yeah, you know, you you threw a beating on him last year. And he he re he remembers, you know, he remembers. He's a great guy, man.
SPEAKER_04He's really he gave me grief. We were talking about the matchup against you and Tampa when I said the last two national champs. He's like, thanks, Kevin. I'm not even getting paid for this. And I said, look at coach, I'm not getting paid for it either.
SPEAKER_10He's a funny guy, but anyway, he he he threw out a lot of respect for LR. He really did. He said how well you guys are coached. And he said one thing that he said that because I I said one thing about LR is they don't panic. They kind of just stay steady. They can get down a goal, two, three goals, and you there's no panic there. They're just gonna find a way to chip it out, get that ground ball, cause that turnover, get that ball back. Pence Benny making a big save like he's been doing all year. Evan Voss getting one in, you know, and some crazy angle shot, you know, like just all these little things that have added up over here. And Coach Ryan just gave you a bunch of props on that. Now you're going back to Philly, kind of been there, done that. Are we gonna have a different sense of what we're gonna do going in? Are we gonna be just too relaxed because we've been there done that?
SPEAKER_01No, I don't I don't think you can ever be relaxed in that environment. Um, you know, because it's such a different environment. And I think having been there actually helps you immensely, just because it's completely different than any other environment you you play in. Like LR, like you can get loud between the bricks, but it's nothing like playing at Lincoln Financial. Like just it's there's there's no comparison. So having been there, where it's so hard to communicate, even if I'm trying to say something to Joey and he's gonna attack me at the top of the box right in front of me, he can't hear me. So just understanding that and and sort of prepping for that really helps. You know, and I think you know, our guys our guys are very prideful and and want to prove that they are the best team in the country. Like that's that's what they want to do. Um, and that's what I've been you complacency is something that can you know derail championship teams or or teams you know that are going for another championship. And all I guess there's been no complacency, no practices that I've ever that this year have been like, man, that's been a terrible practice. These guys get after it, they look forward to it, they're they're hungry every day. And so you just gotta feel good about that going in and with the experience we have. Um, we can't wait for Sunday.
SPEAKER_10You know what? Winning makes those practices fun, coach. You know, I'll say that right now. And these guys are probably gonna attest to that. When you win, you're like, all right, that practice wasn't so bad at getting up at 5 30 this morning. But you know what? Now you're going up against an Adelphi team that coach, quite frankly, has an amazing uh goalkeeper in Dylan Renner. He has been nothing short of spectacular all year. He's been their catalyst. Their defense gets after it. They're a high IQ team, well coached, but they haven't been there in a while. What do you think about this a Delphi Panther team?
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, it's uh I'm very good friends with the staff. You know, I uh know Coach Purdy, Coach Catalani, um coach go way back with those guys. So um, you know, when when they came down after we played them this year, I said, hey, maybe we see you guys again in May. And you know, here it is. And and they are a tremendous group. I mean, they their defense, I mean, that was a that was a you know slug fest seven seven to three was last year. Yeah, really.
SPEAKER_04I was that was another game I was shocked at that score. Shocked.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, it was just two great defenses going against each other, and and and I feel like our offense is pretty good. We can only you know put up seven against those guys. Evan Evan went down with the injury midway through that game. I think that kind of scrambled us a little bit. But no, they're they're they're a tremendous group. And you know, growing up on Long Island, I mean Philadelphia was 10 minutes down the road from me. A lot of people that played there and have tremendous respect for their whole program.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so Evan, that was what a question I have for you, and Danny kind of teed it up with coach. Danny and I've been saying all year the two best goalies in Division II are Dylan Renner and Rob Pensebenny. Hands down, the best. And so my question to you is what do you think of seeing Dylan Renner on the other side of the field? And I'll let me tell you, if you're shooting from 15 yards and he stops, he's gonna stare you down because that's what he did to every St. A player. He's like, come on, you really gonna shoot from there for me? But uh, what do you think of playing against Dylan Runner and and trying to get a past him?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I mean, they've been great all year. Obviously, playing them earlier in the year, kind of got a little taste of that. Um, you know, just kind of prepare the way that we need to prepare for everybody. Else just kind of focus on ourselves first and then make our way into the preparation for seeing those guys. And it's the same like every week, just the last couple weeks. Uh just do what we do best. And I think that's kind of how teams prevail in May. Last year, that's what we did. Played the best across that we possibly could. So I don't think it's so much of preparing for him, just try to get us the best possibly prepared that we can be. And then on Sunday, it's just the Bears are going.
SPEAKER_10So well spoken. Spoken like a seasoned veteran right there. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Is there anything? Let me ask you this, Rob. Is there anything I was going to ask this to coach, but I'll ask you first. That game was so early in the season. So do you really take how much do you take from that game, or do you look at other things from them, or do you do what just what Evan said? You guys prepare Lenore Ryan lacrosse and not worry about really matching up against the Delphi.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, I think that's the nicest thing about our team is just like, I don't think it really matters who we play. I think we just we know we got to stick with what we got. And we even changed up like our approach to Tampa this time when we played Tampa. And like it's even if you change up the approach, it won't be it won't be the end of the world. We're gonna stick to the values that we we discuss over the week, and whatever we decide is is the right move for this Adelphi team, which will surely be different than what we saw early in their season. We'll be able to adapt to it. Like the players that they have are still the same players. Yeah, some parts of it might be new, but at the same time, it's the same team we played before, and it's the same lacrosse game we've been playing all season long. It's it won't really won't change too much. So, Joey. I'm sorry, go ahead, Coach.
SPEAKER_01I was just gonna say what's what's unique about having played them. Last year when we saw Merciers, you know, we all we saw them was on film.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01Gauge, size, speed. You know, when when we warmed up, I said to Coach Compton, I'm like, these guys are smaller than like uh they looked on film. Like, I'm like, we look bigger and stronger and faster than these guys. When a Delphi came down, I'm like, they look bigger than they were on film. Like, like when I saw those guys in person, so that's that's was kind of the benefit of having played them. I was like, whoa, these guys are bigger and more athletic than than they looked on film.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, man, they're a good team. I've watched the Delphi about about seven or eight times this year. I'm a Long Island guy, so I see them. I went to the game against base. They draw a big crowd, they got a big, you know, large alumni. I don't know what it's gonna be like in Philly for them. Are they gonna make that trip? It's only a two-hour trip, so they might, but they have a large alumni, you know, but like playing again in the Brits, you guys are used to loud. I mean, your guys' fans are as as loud as anybody in the country, if you ask me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I hate going there. Hate going there.
SPEAKER_10I've been to the Brits many times, man, many times in my day. Um, but you know what? It's gonna be an interesting game. Um, I I'm so happy that you guys are going. If there's gonna be somebody from the south, it's gotta be somebody from the sack. You know, you know how I feel about the sack, you know. And uh I I really I wish you guys the best of luck. We'll be there. We'll hopefully see you guys at the after tailgate party. If you guys decide to go to that.
SPEAKER_04Maybe catch it on a practice on Saturday. I hope to be up there Friday, so I'll catch you at that practice too, hopefully.
SPEAKER_10All right, perfect. All the guys, Rob Pennsylvania, Joey Mason, Evan Voss, Coach Paradine, Lamar Ride Bears going back third time in four years. You guys got a bunch of studs, both sides of the ball, offense and defense, a studding goal. I think you guys got a really good chance to repeat, man, and go out there and uh represent the South kid.
SPEAKER_01Well, thanks. Appreciate it.
SPEAKER_08Thank you. Thank you very much.
Final Predictions
SPEAKER_04All right, Danny. We talked about the last week's games. We talked to both teams, Lenore, Ryan, and Delphi. What do you think of this matchup?
SPEAKER_10Kev, I think it's gonna be a defensive battle. I really do. Two outstanding defenses. Um both teams with all Americans on both sides of the ball. Two outstanding goalies, perhaps the two best goalies in all of Division II lacrosse going against each other. Um it's gonna be great. I think LR is the better team, though, Kevin. And I think that they're the king of the castle. They've been to three out of the last four national championships, they've had to face a gauntlet of great teams just to get to this point. Their last four games have been against top five teams in the country.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so really interesting. I had that same thought, so I did all the homework. I went to see it. My first guess was Lenore Ryan was more battle-tested. So Lenore Ryan played six games in the regular season against top ten teams. They lost only one to limestone by a goal. A Delphi also played six games against top ten teams in the regular season. They lost two, both to South Region teams. LR and Rollins. Now let's go to the playoffs. Lenore Ryan beat four top ten teams to win the SAC championship and get to the Natty. A Delphi, not far behind, beat three top ten teams in the N Championship and to get to the Natty. Of course, St. Aides was in that realm twice.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_04Even with that said, Danny, I think you take the experience from last year. You take the experience of what they've done this year, you saw what Lenore Ryan could do and what the players said, that they stayed calm even when they were down against limestone in Tampa. Because they they have the experience. They know how they are going. They're not, they don't react, they continue to play their ball and stay calm. I think that's a deciding factor, and I think Lenore Ryan pulls this one out.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with you on this one. I think you know they they're returning to Philly. They're they're you they've been there. They're it's not new to them. It's uh it's gonna be business as usual for the Bears. I think Coach Paradon has this team really well oiled. I mean, again, Wingate, Limestone, Limestone, Tampa. That's top four teams in the country, Kevin. I mean, literally. I mean, I know Wingate was number seven, but they could arguably be top four or five teams. They're really that good. But but you're not a homer. Oh, I don't give a shit what anybody thinks. I'm just telling you the way I feel. I know. You know, I just you know, there's been other coaches that have been.
SPEAKER_04They are in the top, they are in the top six. They should have been in the tournament. We talked about this. They're at least in the top six.
SPEAKER_10You know, and and Lenore Ryan, you know, has beaten really, really, really the best teams in the country. And you know, they've beat they beat Adelphi early in the season, and Kyle Steinbach wasn't in the game. You know, that could have been a difference right there. But, you know, Mancini at at the X, you know, LR is gonna have possession. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04They're going to and Delphi's gonna have to, like they said, they're gonna have to play like they've played all year. Like they're gonna have to put get the ball back, not have turnovers, and then finish, which is tough against this defense. So I hope it's a close game. I hope it's a close game because I felt like we know it wasn't last year, and that wasn't indicative of Mercyhurst. These two are two really good teams, and I think a close game would be just great for D2.
SPEAKER_10I agree with you. It's gonna be it's gonna be a barn burner. It should be a really good one. And I think it's gonna be more fun.
SPEAKER_04And coach Coach Volpe, if they win, can thank me once again because I picked LR. So that means that uh Delphi should win. He's pissed at you now. No.
SPEAKER_10You know what, though? They're a great, great group, you know, Volpe and and Coach Purdy and Kat, and those guys doing an amazing job with the Delphi year after year after year after year. Kevin, when you see them on the field, they're big, they're strong, they're fast, they're athletic, they get after it. High IQ team, man. High IQ team. They don't make a lot of mistakes. They don't. But on the other side of the coin, so is Lenore Ryan. High IQ team, don't make a lot of mistakes, stud in goal. I mean, we have two studs in goal. It's gonna be phenomenal. I think it's gonna be a really good game. Yeah, I agree. Yep. And I'm looking forward to going to Philly, man. Yeah, so everyone look for us. We'll be out there. Yeah, baby.
Shout Outs
SPEAKER_04All right, Danny. Now it's time to go to our shout-outs. And this is typically the time that the the accolades start rolling. We usually just stick with U.S. ILA, and USILA has their all region teams out right now. So I thought what we'd do is give a shout-out to those players. We don't have time to go through everyone who who got a position. We'll stick with the first team and the top players awards. Uh, do you want me to start off with the north and then you can do the second one? Go ahead. Sure. In the north, this is the USILA all-region team in the north. Offensive player of the year, Ryan Kemp for pace. Defensive player of the year, Ryan Slattery, St. Anselm. Stud. Player of the Year, Dylan Renner. Well deserved. Well deserved. Imagine that. That's the right choice for player of the year. Okay, continuing. First team attack. Ryan Kemp, pace. Ethan Landamore, Mercyhurst, Logan Tucker, Adelphi, and Jake Davis, St. Anselm. Four midfield, first team, Nick Larson, St. Anselm, Andrew Calabria, Mercy, Raphael Rodriguez, Pace, and Kyle Lewis, a Delphi. These are all players are. It's amazing. Defense, first team, Ryan Slattery, St. Anselm, Ryan Butler, a Delphi. And the man amongst boys, Justin Gerdville, Mercy. And then in goal, first team, player of the year, Dylan Renner. Faceoff, first team. The man we talked about a lot, Jason Cooner, Mercy College.
SPEAKER_10He's amazing. Yeah, he's good. What a group.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Now get this. Long stick midfielder, first team. Garrett Brockmeyer, Lake Erie. He had a great season. We didn't get to talk about him enough this year. Yeah. Chris Caputo, pace. Short stick D Midi. First team. Jack Hipchin, a Delphi. Tyler P attack. Mercy. Yeah. And there you go, Danny. That's what a squad. Imagine that team.
SPEAKER_10Can you imagine all those guys on one team? Oh my god. They would take out half of the D1 teams. Oh, yeah. Totally. All right. I'll let me get into the South, okay? And the South All Regional 2024. The offensive player of the year, Canyon Birch, University of Tampa Spartans. The defensive player of the year. No surprise here, Victor Powell, Norrine Bears. And player of the year, Willie Greco. Wingate, second all-time in points in all of Division II history. He's an amazing player. So I'll go uh first team attack in the South. Uh Willie Greco from Wingate. Uh Kenyon Birch, University of Tampa, Scott Reed of Newberry, and Zach Terry of Limestone. There's an attack for you. Yeah. First team midfield, Owen Miller, University of Tampa. Baker Westmoreland of Newberry. Owen Braddock of University of Indianapolis, the UND Greyhounds. And Nick Papa from Tampa. That was your first team midfield. First team defense. Victor Powell, Lenore Ryan University. Matthew Beto, University of Tampa. Peyton Farley, Wingate University, Bulldogs. And Nick Shannon from Florida Southern. Well deserved. That kid can play, Kev. First team goalie. Rob Pennsimani, Lenore Ryan University. Another shocker. First team face-off. Alex Poma, University of Tampa. First team long stick midfielder. Another stud. Joe Carnich, Wingate University. First team short stick D-Mids. Colton McCracken, Lenore Ryan University. Jackson Day of University of Tampa. And that's your South Region, all region, first team, Cap. Another scary team. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Another scary team. Imagine those two teams playing each other. Oh, that would be that would be a great game to watch. I wonder if we could set that up. Let's talk to the USILA. Do we have any clouds? No, we don't.
SPEAKER_10That would be sick. Put the black shirts on the north, the white shirts on the south, and let them down. That would be that would be cool, man. It would. It would. Hey, congratulations to all those guys. Well deserved.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, to those second team, third team, and honorable mentioned, too many to mention this time, but congratulations to all of you. Each one of those positions is well deserved. And to be honest, it's it's minuscule differences in some of the first team, second team, get second team to third team. I mean, you look at the players down the rosters, and it is amazing.
SPEAKER_10You know, you hit the nail on the head right there when you said minuscule differences. You know, some of these players could probably be first team that are on second team. But you know, it's just a great list. And congratulations to all the guys! Congratulations to all the seniors that are graduating and moving on with their lives. D2. It's been a great year this year.
SPEAKER_04It has. We're just about to just close it up. Really, one more episode for this season, and that's it. Unbelievable. We got to thank our segment sponsor, laxjobs.us. Finding lacrosse jobs for lacrosse people. And thank you to all our fans. Remember, if you like this podcast, pass it along. Let's keep this thing going and rolling. And even if your team is not in it anymore, keep up with the D2 news. See who's who's winning, who's doing what. So with that, Danny, for tonight. That's a wrap. There's a good one tonight, Kev, and that's a wrap.
