Intro
SPEAKER_12Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of In the Crease with Danny and Kevin, a coast-to-coast discussion of D2 Men's La Cross. I'm your co-host, Kevin Stenstrom, and with me as always is the Maestro of Mayhem, Danny Moran. Speaking of maestro.
SPEAKER_13It's going to be our theme song song tonight. I love it. Yeah. We got our teams, Kev. We're down to the national championship. We're going up to Boston. What do you think?
SPEAKER_12Can't wait. Near my old stomping grounds. Cannot wait.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, it should be fun. It's going to be two good teams, man. And uh it's going to be uh uh uh what I like to say, it's gonna be a barn burner.
SPEAKER_12I think you're right. I think you're right. Let's get to those games, but we're gonna do it a little bit differently. We're gonna mix it up a bit. We usually do the week in review, then the games to watch, followed by a spotlight. This week we have a few guests waiting the wings, so why don't we discuss a regional final and then we'll bring on the team that won it and is now headed to Boston, and then we'll rinse and repeat before we get to any predictions for the final game. Okay, sounds good. Where do you want to start, north or south? You tell me,
South Region Finals
SPEAKER_12young man. Let's start in the south region, because we do start in the north. What do you say?
SPEAKER_13I'd love it. Here we go. What do you think?
SPEAKER_12Tampa against Maryville. Tampa pulls it out 12-8. Here's some things.
SPEAKER_13We both picked Tampa.
SPEAKER_12We both picked Tampa, so we a little pat on the back. But I'll tell you, just starting out, stifling heat down in Tampa. The field was over 100 degrees, so that gives a big, huge advantage, I think, to Tampa. But not only that, Tampa's defense was stifling too. They really kept Maryland's Maryville's offense off kilter. Yeah, I keep on doing Maryland. Maryville. Because they're almost as good as Maryland. That's what I want to say.
SPEAKER_13There you go. That's why.
SPEAKER_12You know, they're getting sticks in lanes, they had some good checks. They just got them out. You were talking about Maryville last week and how they spaced well, they moved the ball well. Tampa's defense didn't allow them to do that. That really kind of confused them to begin with. I think that had a lot to do with it. And they needed to start off like they started against limestone. You know, get some quick goals. And instead, it was the Spartans who scored the first five.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, it was 3-0 after one, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_12And they they carried that through to about 1039 left in the second where it was 5-0. Meryville scored a minute later, but you know, you don't want to be down that much in that kind of heat against a team like Tampa.
SPEAKER_13No, Tampa's got so many guys that can score. They're just they're so deep defensively. They just they do so much, Kev. They make it really hard. They make it really hard for offenses to run their offense. Their defense has been stout this year, really.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I think that has been a big difference we've seen in past teams of theirs where we've really lit watched their offense shine all the time. But this time, and we've seen it in several games, their defense is tough. Now, Meryville played them even in the second half. They actually outscored them 5'4 in the second half. You just look at straight goals. They cut the deficit, but it was always by that point, it's still a 4-5 goal difference. They cut the deficit to four in the first 20 seconds of the fourth quarter. You're thinking maybe they can breathe some life into this game and push back. It never happened. They because Tampa would answer.
SPEAKER_13You know what happened in that second half? Shea Rayburn at the dot from Merryville did very well. He started to, he was beating Mikey Flores on some on some, you know, and they were able to get some possessions and get some and and bury some biscuits there. But again, you know, Tampa's just really strong, Kev. They're just high IQ team, high octane. And, you know, like you just said, we're used to seeing them put 17, 18, 19 goals a game up. This year they're not doing that. They're more like 13, 14 goals. But they're holding teams to under double digits. Under double digits. So their defense, and you know, Mr. Conaterio, who's just been tearing up the South this year. Yeah. Just an amazing performance this year by the grad student. And just, you know, I think a lot of that has to do with him. Uh like, you know, Mikey Floor, as I said, like struggled a little bit in that second half a little bit. I Shay Rayburn's a very good face-off guy. He's really good. Maryville had a great, great season, Kev. I gotta give him, I gotta, I gotta give him a cheer. Oh, yeah. Cheer for him.
SPEAKER_12100%. 100%. Because, you know, obviously we're a bit biased. We're biased towards the sack, and I think the sack is just phenomenal. But you look at what they were able to do coming out of the GLVC, and that will tell you the kind of competition that they have to play and what they did to be able to stack up against teams like Anderson or like Limestone and come out with the wins.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_12You know, it it it is a testament to how good that team is.
SPEAKER_13And and the GLVC and what's going on in the Midwest. I mean, it's just growing and growing. They're they're able to get those kids from Minnesota and St. Louis, and the Canadian kids are coming down and playing in the GLVC and just making teams very good, you know. So Meryville had their one of their best years ever in program history. 14 wins, second round of the playoffs in the NCAAs, you know, got to that final four. You know what I mean? That's that's a true testament to their coaching staff, um, that the style of lacrosse the play, their recruiting, uh, and the guys on the field just you know balling out.
SPEAKER_12Totally agree. And so some of the stats individually, Maryville, Clayton Surrett with two goals, two assists, Justin Simonson and Jake Greeby, one goal, one assist a piece. Ben Mickett, Colin Tobias, Brendan Blotell, and Eli Backer all had one goal. And then Jaron Charlton on defense, two ground balls, three cost turnovers. Their guys came out and played hard. They just couldn't match up with Tampa.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, Dylan Radke had nine saves again. Shea Rayburn at the dot was 13 for 17, pretty remarkable at the dot. And for Tampa, multiple scorers again, man. Yeah, Jackson Bashaw with three, Grant Green with two, Rafi Bradshaw with two, Zach Friend with one, A.J. Pasarello, the short stick, D mid. He buried one. Uh Connor McDonald with one, Zach Johnson with one. Mikey Flores went eight for eighteen. How about Jake Huntington, Jack Huntington, three ground balls, two cross turnovers? And Conor Terriel, man, again, 12 saves and just stout in between the pipes for the Spartans. So the Spartans go on to Boston into the national championship. Anyone who's ever taken a kid to a morning travel game knows how important that travel cup of coffee is. When a deep for that coffee hits your nose, you'll forget how early it is and think you're at home.com can do a better way to try it.com.experience.com. A better way to train.
Tampa Spartans
SPEAKER_12Now up are a few folks from the Tampa Spartans. We've got Coach JB Clark, Coach Ryan Sullivan, and captains AJ Pascarella and Aiden Cacera. And I have to point out with these captains, I love it that they're both short stick D-mittis.
SPEAKER_13And New Yorkers, too. But I got some music for them. Where are we going, boys?
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_13We're shipping up for Boston. We are that's the theme song for tonight. Shipping up for Boston. The Tampa Spartans are in the house. How are you guys doing tonight?
SPEAKER_06Good. How are you? Thank you for having us.
SPEAKER_13Uh, thanks for coming on. Taking time. Well, study hall's done, right? You're done with school. So no more study hall. Coach. Coach Clark, thank you so much for coming on tonight. Let me just congratulate you guys on a phenomenal, undefeated 20 and 0 season. Just a great, great season. I've watched Tampa play many, many times this year, especially that limestone game in the early part of the year. The Wingate game I attended a couple of weeks ago in the rain. Uh, great game, great lacrosse. Just congratulations on a great season, Coach Clark.
SPEAKER_14Thanks, Dan. It was uh it's fun to watch these guys progress throughout the year and uh take us on this ride.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, Coach, let me ask you, it's so tough to get back to the championship. What does it feel like to be back after three years? And I was talking to Coach Sullivan about this before we started recording, and really doing it at least from the record the same way, coming into the the championship weekend undefeated.
SPEAKER_14It seems like forever ago that we were in this game. Um you know it's it's such an intoxicating weekend for for so many reasons. Um win or lose, really. Um it's it's the pinnacle, right? Whether it's division one, two, or three. So when you aren't in it, it's such a disappointment, and we've had such good teams in between. Uh it was so disappointing to not get there. Um and it's sometimes it's hard to realize that you had great seasons even though you didn't get to this game. Um so it seems like a long time ago that we were here. I'm sure that these two guys can can relate to that, but uh certainly an honor to be coming back.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, that's uh so well said. I was wondering if you were gonna say something like that. I you you can almost feel it every year, probably like last year, you make it to the Final Four, and then you don't you you can't make it to the championship. It's just without outside your reach, kind of interesting. Aiden, let me ask you this what has this been season been like for you, especially as a captain of the team?
SPEAKER_06I mean, this year's been, as I mentioned before, it's been good. Um I couldn't have done it without obviously the help of AJ, our two coaches, um, including Coach Goldsmith, Coach Clark, um, Coach Sullivan, of course, and Coach Palman, Coach Bramble. Uh, but it's really been great. Such a privilege to be able to say that I have um, you know, become a captain. And like I said, I couldn't have done it without the coaches and without AJ, but it's been great. Um it's been good, like I said. I want it to be great on Sunday. That's the goal.
SPEAKER_12There you go. I love it. I love it. Me too, man. Yeah, and AJ, so Tampa's defense has only allowed more than 10 goals twice this year. That in and of itself, I think, is a feat. You rarely see that. How do you guys stay so consistent on that side of the field?
SPEAKER_10I mean, it's really it's just playing for each other, supporting each other, um, when people need help. Uh you know, our goalie, Connor, he's phenomenal. They have a bunch of great players all over the field, and it's just players making plays at this time of year. Um yeah, and it really starts with, you know, from the face-off dot, the offense producing, giving us, you know, good uh good rest time when they have long possessions, and yeah, it's a whole team effort. It's not just the defense, it's the whole team.
SPEAKER_13The defense is pretty stout though. I mean, you're holding like really good offenses like that Wingate uh attack unit, you held to just four points that day. I mean, that's pretty that's pretty impressive, you know. And you guys are short stick D mids, Long Island boys. You got that extra little bit of something, something, don't you guys?
SPEAKER_10Uh yeah, I guess. Yeah, you do, you do, man. It really is the whole team, though. It's not just just the defense. Uh it really starts from from the whole offense face-off, and then when we make mistakes, Connor's bailing us out. So it really is just a whole group effort.
SPEAKER_12I think that attitude is what gets a team to championship weekend when you can think it think selflessly and also play as a team. Like you're not saying, oh, it's us defense, pick it up offense or vice versa, right? I mean, if you're playing as a team, you know it takes all the sides. So I think your your attitude is and your what you said is spot on. But Coach Sullivan, uh, AJ pointed it out. Great goalie, you have a great goalie, but so does Adelphi with Dylan Renner. What do you guys think of him on the other side of the field in that matchup?
SPEAKER_04You know, obviously, um, if there's a storyline in the Division II national championship, um, it would probably be their goalie and our goalie. And it's very similar to kind of reminds me right away of like when two great quarterbacks play against each other. Well, Patrick Patrick Mahomes is not, doesn't need to beat Josh Allen. Like he's not Josh Allen isn't covering his receivers, and vice versa. So uh hopefully their goalie doesn't get down the field running right on top of our goalie to take a shot. Um vice versa. So to be honest with you, yeah, they're two great goalies. I think that kid was the player of the year, if not the defensive player of the year last year, and obviously a big reason why they had so much success and ultimately won. So to be honest with you, I don't really obviously it's two great all-American of goalies.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So each one will be one or two. Who will be one, who will be two, I don't know. But um to be honest with you, I don't. Yeah, I think he's a great goalie. I I really do. But I I think our kid's pretty damn good too.
SPEAKER_12100%. 100%. I mean, uh take nothing away from Connor whatsoever. I he's he's been amazing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_12I mean, I so uh let me ask you this, and maybe it's to you and Coach Clark. Do you change things when you have a goalie like that, or do you just still play your game?
SPEAKER_14Oh, we we still play our game. Um I I've made the mistake of trying to overcoach shooters um to try and shoot to specific spots with goalies, and uh it never works. It never works. Um, especially with a guy as you know as good as these two. Yeah. Um good shots will go on great goalies, and you see it in in all divisions at all levels. Um you know, and they're gonna steal some. They're gonna steal some. That's just the way it goes. Um so I I don't we we could put too much into it. And I I've seen teams play us where I was like, geez, I I think they should have taken that shot and and they they shy away from it because they're so concerned about the goalie. Um but I I have to ask Coach Sullivan, uh, what what I heard you say Patrick Mahomes. I never heard of the other guy. What was the other guy's name?
SPEAKER_04The quarterback. He's the best professional football player currently.
SPEAKER_14I didn't I never heard of the guy. I didn't know you were talking about. Oh, shots.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I love that. I love that. I don't you know, Coach Sullivan, I never see enough posts uh during the NFL season from you about Bill's posts. Just don't see enough.
SPEAKER_03It's my only hobby. It's my only hobby.
SPEAKER_13So what's the plan this week? Just practice as normal, just like you would a normal week, or is there any little thing different you got going on this week, coach?
SPEAKER_14No, Dan, it's it's really the same. Um we spend the first couple days really focusing on us. Um we do spend more time than we normally would if all the travel weren't involved with getting up to to Boston on Sunday, uh, you know, getting up there Thursday and you know, flights at 7 a.m. And so we did spend a little bit of time on Adelphi um today, but not much. 90% of our practice today and tomorrow will be focusing on us. Um get up there, we'll practice at Providence College on uh Thursday afternoon. Um and that that'll really more like half our practice will be spent on Adelphi. But at this time of year, it's it's more about us playing well than it is trying to figure out as you know exactly what what our opponent does.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, no, that makes a hundred percent sense. I always say, you know, you do what got you there, right?
SPEAKER_14Yeah, dance with who brung you.
SPEAKER_13That's oh, it's the greatest coach's line ever. I used to use that on my uh football team all the time back in the day. Um I can't tell you enough that I think this matchup is gonna be something special. I mean, there's a lot of good players on both teams, on both sides of the ball, defensively, especially. Your defense this year is different. I don't know what's different about it. I mean, uh I've always thought of Tampa as an offensive-oriented team, you know. You've always had like guys like Fitzpatrick and and just you've had some great offensive players, but this year the defense seems to be stepping up. What what do you say about that?
SPEAKER_14It it's our depth. It really is. I mean, we're gonna run five five short stick D middies, three poles, four or five close defensemen, and uh, you know, we sub those guys in and out without any concern whatsoever. Um so I I think our depth down there is is really been key to our success. Obviously, you know, he's on the he's on the call, but Ryan Sullivan's one of the best defensive coaches, certainly in our division, but maybe in all in all of coaching. So these guys buy into to what he he preaches. Uh they know that he he loves them and cares about him and wants what's on what's best for them. So, you know, they go out there and they they'll dive in front of shots for you know, not only for each other, but also for their defensive coach. So we're real lucky with that. But it's our depth, it's our for some reason that uh you know we kind of focused in recruiting on that end of the field. And uh it you're right, it's a little different, certainly, than most teams I've taken to this game in the past have been, you know, let's see how many we can score and and maybe they won't catch us kind of kind of play. And uh this year it's it's been very different. Um so kudos to our players for for uh you know buying into that. Winning a lot of face-offs helps as well.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, Mikey Flores I was at the game too. Too shabby. Went up at the game last week. I was in the garage, I was by the car, it was after the game. I guess it was about 45 minutes after the Wingate game. And Mikey Flores walked by me and I was like, damn, he's a big boy. I didn't realize how solid he was. You know, he doesn't look that big on camera, you know what I mean? He kind of looks like he's got chicken legs and stuff, you know. But then when you see him in person, like, God damn, that boy's he's got some size to him. I said, good game. I said Great game, and he you know congratulated me on being, you know, Wingate said it was a great game, and that was a really good game to watch. It's too bad it was like raining and looking that field was a little wet. I gotta say one thing. Guys play in a beautiful stadium, man. That's that's we're lucky. That's a really nice stadium, man. I I was saying it a lot.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I I talking about going up next to players, um, I that's why I like to stay in the stands because at 5'7, I feel a lot taller when I'm up in the stands than when I'm standing next to any of the players. Hey, AJ, let me ask you this. Every week on social media after you win, I see the phrase on to the next. Is that kind of your team's mantra? How do you is is that something that you're just one game at a time and then you click on to the next side as as Coach Belichick used to say, we're on, we're now on to a Delphi?
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I mean the whole year. It's you know, it's been play a game, um, you know, enjoy it that night, and then right on to the next Monday morning practice, lift. You know, that game's in the past. Uh thank thankfully we haven't lost any, but you know, that win doesn't really change anything that's gonna happen this week. So it's really just been that mindset all season, onto the next, on to the next, like what happened in the past, even good stuff, mistakes, you know, leave it in the past, you know, learn from the mistakes, keep uh building off the good stuff. But now, you know, this is the next one is the last one. So this is what it's all all that onto the next, and all that has really just led to this moment right here. So now we're just really, really focusing on this moment. Taking it.
SPEAKER_12I got it. And and Aiden, like you said, this is a last. And the last time you were there, you and AJ were freshmen. So what does that mean to come back as seniors and and be back in this game?
SPEAKER_06I mean, to be back here, um, like I said before, I mean, I mean we couldn't have done it without everybody. Um, but it means a lot. Um, it'll certainly mean more when we get to finally touch the trophy. Um, but it's been you know, it's been a great process. Um obviously, like I said, without the coaches, um without AJ, we have other platoon leaders. I don't want them to go unnoticed. Um we have Brady Bolton, Matt Basso, uh other seniors barely stepping up to the plate, even juniors like Conley Stone, he's been a huge leader off the field, uh Grant Green, even on the field, both those guys. Um, but it's been great. I'm happy that we're getting back to go to Boston, or this time we get to go to Boston and um want to bring home a win.
SPEAKER_13So you're not, you know, your folks aren't too far. You got a bunch of family coming up, be like a three-hour drive from Long Island.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Oh yeah. You're gonna take the ferry, come over and see us.
SPEAKER_13Okay, awesome. That's great. I hey um Dan.
SPEAKER_14Something uh special about this senior class that uh was brought to our attention uh on senior day. Um this senior class right now, I think Sally, the the number is 73 wins and six losses.
SPEAKER_04I think that's what it was on senior day. I don't know what I don't really know.
SPEAKER_14Anyway, it it's a it's a remarkable number, guys. Outstanding. Outstanding. Yeah, it's it's and you know you've been around athletics long enough. You don't do that without good good people in your program.
SPEAKER_13Yeah.
SPEAKER_14You got two of the best right here on the phone with you.
SPEAKER_13And it takes a village, you know, coach. It takes the ingredients. I say it in our podcast all the time, you know, to build a cake, you need ingredients. And you need the and you need good ingredients, you know. And once once you get all the ingredients and you can get that mixture just right, good things happen. And you know what? Ever since you've been at Tampa, you've just been amazing. It's just been an amazing to watch. It's a high IQ team, fast-moving team, defensively stout team, offensively moving the ball well. Just you do so many parts of the game so well. It's fun to watch. You know, I'm uh I I never played the game. I never played, and I never coached, but I love this game. I like study it, I watch it. I just I just think what Tampa does and and your teams, even when you were at limestone, um, just what they've been able to do is just nothing less than remarkable, coach. I I really I gotta give you my props, man.
SPEAKER_14Well, thank you.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, and I like Danny says, it takes a village, like, and you said it, coach, it's your coaching staff, it's it's how you've built the team. You know. Really, we have a test this next weekend of of two Titans in Division II, year after year, which you you really want nothing better than that. That's why I'm so excited to see this weekend. And and we really thank you guys for taking the time and coming on. I'll be up there this weekend. I hope to be able to catch maybe your practice Saturday morning and say, say hi to you guys, and then watch you on Sunday and and see who li what lifts the trophy. I wish you guys the best of luck. It's been great having you on. Thanks for coming.
SPEAKER_10Thank you. Thank you for having us. Thank you guys.
North Region Finals
SPEAKER_12All right, now, Danny, let's go to the North region. Delphi against St. Anselm. Delphi pulls it out 13-11. This was a rematch from last year. Yeah. And I have to I have to say one thing. I I wrote down their names early on in the game because they were already making a difference. And these are two transfers Noah Gibson and Reese Bauer.
SPEAKER_13Oh, yeah, man. They played well. Uh Adelphi. I was at the game, Kev. It was a beautiful after Sunday afternoon here on Long Island in Garden City. I saw some Wingate dads, and we hung out and we watched the game and uh kept looking at the Tampa score. But uh, hey, it was a great day to be at Adelphi and be at Matamat's uh stadium there. Um packed house, packed, Kevin. Yeah. Lots of people there, a load of alumni along the back fence behind the uh the goalpost there, and just chirping all day at Finn Granara. Poor Finn caught a lot of chirps that day. But you know what? That's what it takes when you with the big boys.
SPEAKER_12You so you start with a goalie and defense. Here's what I saw in in the first half very physical play on defense and riding, middle of the field, both teams, St. A's defense after a Delphi's transition goal were locked down really in that first half. I thought they played really well against a Delphi that first half.
SPEAKER_13They did. It was a really good game. What was it after one? It was 2-1.
SPEAKER_122-1 after one. And it was St. A's, yeah. Because a Delphi scored first with a fantastic tic-tac-toe goal on transition. And you're like, uh, here we go. Yeah. St. A's is like, uh-uh. And they came back and they scored two. And then Danny, in the second quarter, both teams were six v four for for a while. Do you remember that?
SPEAKER_13Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_12St. A's kind of took advantage. They got one goal. They had it was a two-minute non-releaseable. The second goal they got to make it four to two was after the penalty was up, but it was still kind of in that transition time. They they hadn't really settled in six v6. And then right after that, the Panthers had a six v four chance. No gick, Noah Gibson clanks it off the pipe, and then they get it back in transition to score by Braden Danellan.
SPEAKER_13Kevin, that pipe was dinging all afternoon. There must have been a minimum of six, maybe seven pipes in that game on both teams. Both teams are hitting pipe. Yeah. Dink, dink, like all day. I was saying to Coach PayPal, I was like, hey, that's two. Bink, that's three. Yeah, pink, that's four, bink. What are they? What are we up to? Six? Bink, that's seven. A lot of pipes, which means a lot of shots were getting off. Hey, both teams are really, really good and they match up well. They really do. This was the rubber match. St. A's beat them earlier in the season. Um Adelphi avenged that in the N-10. Yeah. And then avenged that loss again. So a great matchup between those two. They really match up well. I mean, just defensively and offensively, it's just a really, really good matchup.
SPEAKER_12And it was crazy because at the end of the half, St. A scores with 44 seconds left and they go up by two goals. It's 8-6, and you're like, ooh. Interesting. Delphi doesn't quit. They have 40. They score within the next 30 seconds. 10 seconds left, they score to make it 8-7 to end the half. That's how tight the game was in that first half.
SPEAKER_13Now you're ready for this? 13-11. It was a two-goal game, it was the final. Did you see the hidden ball trick?
SPEAKER_12No.
SPEAKER_13Delphi pulled the hidden ball trick and fooled Granara and scored the goal. Not, but it was a weird kind of goal. It like trickled in. Yes, I do.
SPEAKER_12I remember trickling in. I didn't know that was off a hidden.
SPEAKER_13It trickled in. And then there was another, another goal that was deflected in. It hit a player and kind of like bounced, like almost like a hockey deflection when it, you know, the guy takes the shot and deflects off the stick and goes over the guy's shoulder. It was two goals. So there was the hidden ball trick and another deflection that went in, and Granara didn't see, couldn't, couldn't stop that one. It just, you know, his body was here and the ball deflected to his left side. So those two goals turned out to be the difference in the game.
SPEAKER_12It's interesting, though. It's interesting because if you think about it, you know, a Delphi comes out in that second half and they score six in a row.
SPEAKER_13Yeah. And Dylan Renner also turned it up in the second half.
SPEAKER_12The whole D stepped up, but you're right, Dylan Renner.
SPEAKER_13There was a few in the first quarter in the first quarter that I first half that I said, ah, Renner usually makes that stop. Renner usually makes that stop.
SPEAKER_12And then their defense, yeah, and then their defense were picking off passes. They were intercepting some passes.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, really.
SPEAKER_12You know, and I think the difference was some the the clears and two turnovers in that second half hurt St. A's.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, well, they had a couple of failed clears where, you know, Adelphi Panthers turned it up in the middle of the field, caused some havoc. Um they had a couple of failed clears, and and and a Delphi took advantage of that, you know. St. A's needed every possession to be perfect, you know, to kind of like beat them. And they just couldn't that that ride was hard. They were making it real difficult for St. A's to clear the ball.
SPEAKER_12But this is how good the game was, I thought, because Adelphi's up 13-8 with seven minutes to play. And I'm thinking they can just cruise in. It's gonna be tough to get six goals in seven minutes. I don't see it happening, right? Or five goals, thirteen to eight, five goals. But they don't go away and they bring it to 13-11 with 105 to play.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, man.
unknownSt.
SPEAKER_13A's is legit. That kid, Matt Lemay, he's is he's impressive, man. He's impressive. I think, you know, Will Andrews is impressive. Colin Mulvey. Yeah, those guys are good, man. They're good players. They really are. Quinn Gannon's very good at the face-off. And you know how we feel about Finn Granara, man. He he he he was remarkable again in that game. Even in the loss, he had a lot of. I'm taking a note.
SPEAKER_12I'm taking a note because you said on our last podcast, I'm writing it down. Finn Grenara first player spotlight season 2026.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, man, definitely. So I think those two goals, that hidden ball trick goal, kind of caught them off guard. You see Grenara looking east, and that ball came from the south, you know? Yeah. And uh it was a good play. It worked, you know.
SPEAKER_12And like I said, the team stats were fairly close, but if you look at two of them, turnovers, St. A's had 24 to Adelphi's 13, and then clears, St. A's 13 of 17 at 76%. A Delphi 15 for 17 at 88%.
SPEAKER_13I tell you, watch out for St. A's next year, man. Yeah. They're gonna be a handful in the NE10. Definitely. So now Adelphi comes away with the win, 13-11, and they are going to back-to-back national championship. So congratulations, Panthers.
Adelphi Panthers
SPEAKER_12Okay, now it's time to welcome in the Adelphi Panthers, winners of the North Region, the rubber match against St. Anselm, and that made them head back to the championship weekend next weekend.
SPEAKER_13Kev, I got music for them. We got music. Hold on. Where are we going, fellas?
SPEAKER_07Boston, baby.
SPEAKER_13Stipping up to Boston is right. The reigning NCAA champion at Belfite Panthers are in the house. How are you guys doing tonight?
SPEAKER_12I love it, sir. I love it. So before let me make sure everyone on the podcast knows who we have in the room. It's a big Zoom room tonight. We have two coaches, Coach Gordon Purdy and Coach Brian Volpe, Michael Dernan, Kyle Lewis, Brain Danellan, Noah Gibson, Ryan Dernan, Michael Delassandro, and Reese Bauer. And then, of course, the man in between the pipes, Dylan Renner. Welcome, boys. Boys. Oh, they're all quiet. How are we doing?
SPEAKER_05Silence.
SPEAKER_12Silence. Silence.
SPEAKER_15No compliance, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_12All right. So let's get started here. First of all, welcome and congrats on getting back to the championship. Coach Purdy and Coach Volpe, how does that feel? After I'm sure you guys felt all year that you had a target on your back. How does it feel to make it back to championship weekend? I'll jump in there.
SPEAKER_11I think we all feel, you know, when we first came back, we set goals. And uh honestly, it was nothing short of getting back to this game to put ourselves in a place to win another championship. And anything less than that, we were gonna feel uh that we didn't get the job done. And so as of right now, you know, we've been given the nod. We're waiting our first practice after our last win. And I think it's just uh an anticipation of come on, let's get this week going, let's get as prepared as we can be to put the best foot forward on Sunday at four o'clock.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, that's awesome. It's it's a long haul. I mean, you had 19 games so far to get to that back to where you are now. Coach Volpe, what was it like in preseason and fallball with these guys on the screen and then progressing them to where they are today?
SPEAKER_09Um, you know, it was kind of uh just like last year's last year, and that's it, and we gotta move forward, you know. Coach Purdy in his interview yesterday after the game was just like, you know, nobody cares. You know, it's we have to move forward, you know. You're you know, you're not as good until your next win, basically, that mentality. Um, you know, it's all about finishing finishing the job here. So they were pretty focused to be honest. It wasn't really a struggle to to get them going. Um I think they were pretty hungry. I think we'd get a decent job as a staff to remind them that you know the past is the past and we just gotta keep moving forward. And to their credit, they you know, they bought into it. You know, they kind of please themselves and uh you can see on the field how they you know they care about each other. So um, you know, they relay that message to themselves as well. It's not just the staff, it's like we have to do this, this is what we need to do. And I think Dylan closed out the interview yesterday. He said, We're just trying to make this the standard here.
SPEAKER_13Well, you're doing a pretty good job. You guys are getting you guys are getting used to it, man. It's been great. You know, I I watched the Delphi just about every game this year, and I said to Kevin, I said, They're good, man. They are good. They got a real good chance of getting back to that Nanny Championship. Got a couple of newcomers this year that really helped out big time. First of all, on the defensive side, Mr. Reese Bauer, the Alberta Canadian, coming down and just wreaking havoc on the field. Sir, you are a standout player. You stand out when I watch a Delphi. You stand out. And we got Noah from upstate Rochester, kid, setting records, coming down and setting records at a Delphi. Good for you guys. How's it been for you two guys to come into this team that was already won a national championship and a lot of their core guys were back? How did that how did that transition go for you? We'll start with you, Reese.
SPEAKER_08Honestly, the transition, like coming from AIC to Delphi, like straight away, like that. You could tell from the pace of practice, like we were doing two days right off the rip. So me coming back into that, it was uh, I wouldn't say it was a struggle, but it was definitely a change of pace coming from AIC to a Delphi. And just like uh the coaches were saying, like coming from last year, like forget about last year. This is a new year, and we kind of gotta earn it again. And we're like everyone's biggest game, so we just kind of, you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_13Excellent. And what about you, Noah? How's that transition been for you?
SPEAKER_16Uh it's been good, it's definitely been um different, but just coming in and competing every day within practice, whether it's one-on-ones or sixes, it's just everybody's trying to get better.
SPEAKER_13When you say different, more different how?
SPEAKER_16Uh just the pace of practice, doing fast breaks or stick works is everything.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, you know, Adelphi's like a D1 team in Division II clothing, is what they are, you know. And uh I just again, you guys have been just amazing on both sides of the ball. And uh that C team was a tough team, man. I think they were, you know, they were they were a very well-coached team. They were strong, they were fast, they could shoot, they had a real strong goalie, and and that kid Granara, he's good. What do you guys think about that game and that rubber match? I mean, you know, that's a big game, you know. Like, it's gotta see. What do you think, Deli? My my former true blue kid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, um, definitely a big game. They're a great team, but it was just another stepping stone to a point that we knew that we had to get to, and they were just a team in our way.
SPEAKER_12So let me ask you this, Kyle. Where's Kyle Lewis? There he is. My man. He's a beast.
SPEAKER_13He's a beast out there.
SPEAKER_12We've been talking about you for too many years now, and it doesn't seem like you're never off the field half most of the time. You rode to the finals, Danny talked about the St. A's game, but you had pretty resounding wins in the first round and the quarterfinals. And then in this in the semis, you kind of took control in that second half. Can you use that momentum on those three games when you go up and face an undefeated team like Tampa?
SPEAKER_02I mean, yeah, absolutely. It um it helps when the offense is doing good for uh multiple consecutive games because it kind of sets a tone for the game coming up. And you know, now our guys and our younger guys are kind of getting into the role, and we're all kind of um coming together, and our chemistry is the best that it's been. So it definitely helps um that we're doing good right now, and hopefully we can keep it on for the national championship, which I think we will.
SPEAKER_13Kyle, you looked real good. And Dunellen, the playing edge kid. What's up, buddy? You're just you're just balling out there, too, man. How's it feel to get back to the 90s? You're only a sophomore. What do you think this is gonna be like a normal thing here at the Delphi? Like you know, he's he's he's there two years and he's going to two nineties. How's that feel, Brady?
SPEAKER_07Feels great being able to make it back to the championship with my teammates, and uh just hope we get the job done again.
SPEAKER_13Oh, there you go.
SPEAKER_12That's awesome. Dylan, I have to ask you this. I saw a couple of stare-downs and and flexes in the second half against St. Anselm. What does that mean for you coming back? First of all, coming back to a Delphi for your fifth year and then getting back to the finals.
SPEAKER_15Um, yeah. So I'll just backpack on coming back to have another chance to compete for national championship like we're doing right now. Um, just to do it with this group of guys is something really special. Um, of course, a lot of guys I played with last year graduated out, but uh being able to do with these guys and the chemistry on this team is awesome.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, you were locked in that second half yesterday. I was a little disappointed in that first half, though. I was like, that's not the kid I know. But you know what? You really uh locked yourself in. And Dylan, I know we started early and Kevin got mad at me for asking questions, but I gotta ask, you know. Um, I think it's important. You know, you came back for your fifth year, you were a national champion last year, uh player of the year, accolade after accolade, first team All-American, first team all region. You did you did everything any coach could ask you to do. How did you stay focused coming back this year for your fifth year? Like you said, a lot of your boys had graduated out. How did you stay grounded and focused?
SPEAKER_15Um, yeah, I mean, individuals, um, but to me, winning it with fifty guys, winning that one award. Winning that national championship last year, there was no different explorer. Um, to have that opportunity to come back and be able to do it back to back. Something that hasn't been done at Adolpha, I think it was like over 25 years.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, it's gonna be good. And Mikey Dernan, how you doing tonight, buddy? Your your your volume's off there. You're back on. There you go. Hey man, good. You've been having a great year too, man. How does it feel to be you know going to that national championship and being such a big contributor on the offensive side? How's that feel?
SPEAKER_00Feels great. I mean, uh being there last year and coming back again this year, getting some uh playing time, it feels amazing. And being out there with my teammates, hopefully just get the job done.
SPEAKER_13Getting playtime. You're doing great, kid, man. You're doing phenomenal out there. Really good, man. Again, I've watched the Delphi a lot this year. I've been saying to Kevin all year, I said they're they're legit this year. They are legit. They got they got some defense. I I think, you know, last year I always felt it was the offense that was really good. You know, you guys had a really crazy good and deep offense. This year, I'm thinking it's more defense. Hank Coach Volpe, is the defense uh is it me or is it No, it's it's it's everybody.
SPEAKER_09I mean, the selflessness on this team is ridiculous. I mean, the amount of points that are shared on the offensive ball and the way they ride, you know, defense starts on the ride, and these boys they ride, they cause turnovers and they turn games for us. So I think it's just uh it's togetherness for us, and the love that we all share for each other is just phenomenal. And you know, you all talk about um, you know, playing for the guy next to you. Well, I can tell you right now, the 52 guys that we have on the team all play for each other.
SPEAKER_12It shows it shows. But let's let's let the other Dernan, the LSM, Ryan Dernan, talk about the defense. How special is it for you to be on this defense, Ryan?
SPEAKER_07Uh yeah, I mean, it means a lot every year. Uh the defense we like to take pride in what we do. We know um we're the only thing that stands in front of the other team scoring goals, and we know our job is to keep that from happening as little as possible. Um, just every single guy that we're in every single day always brings it, brings the intensity. And um, it's a concept for us we know what we have to do, and we're willing to do whatever it takes to get it done. And I'm just really proud of all my teammates, not only on the defensive end, but the offensive end as well. Everybody's just a hundred percent bought in and willing to do anything for the guy next to them. It's just it's really just something special to be a part of.
SPEAKER_12Excellent, excellent. Yeah, that's that's phenomenal. I I I wonder if anyone can chime in with this one. I uh you as you go through the season, you know, you learn a lot of lessons. What do you think the lessons from this season that you can take take and help you for your the championship game up in Boston?
SPEAKER_13Kyle, start with you.
SPEAKER_12And Kyle, you're smiling. You got to talk now.
SPEAKER_02Um well, we learned a lot this season. Obviously, leaving that first game to St. A's, they kind of taught us that it's breakable. Um, and um it made us it made us work harder and know that every game, you know, anything can happen. So that I say that was the main thing we learned. And then obviously Tampa, good team. Um, we've been battle tested three times by St. A's, so we're not really new to anything here. So yeah, I guess the lesson we learned is that any game can go either way, and we got to try our hardest.
SPEAKER_12That's great. How about Reese? How about you coming from AIC, coming into Adelphi? We already talked about that. I think you and Noah both had your own adversity last year. Obviously, Noah, you coming from a school that was closing and your brothers there and having to come to a new environment. Reese, with kind of changes in coaches and everything happened at AIC. And I don't know if you know this, but I grew up right around the corner from Springfield, Massachusetts. Uh but uh what lessons have you learned this season?
SPEAKER_08From being here just uh this semester, I'd say kind of just like playing for us and kind of just being more like mesh with the team and stuff like that, and having the real team chemistry, uh, especially like coming in like mid-season here. It was definitely a little bit took me a little bit to kind of build chemistry with the guys around me on the defensive side as we always had to be on the same page and learn what each other's like tendencies are. So I think just kind of playing with the us mentality playing for us, and yeah, just that.
SPEAKER_12And no, what about you from that adversity? What did you take from that situation to help you in this season, where now you're have the most goals ever scored in one season for the Delphi Panther?
SPEAKER_16Um, yeah, I'd say that kind of helped me, especially after our um loss to St. A's, just not really taking anything for granted and coming in every week and just just going to work every week during practice.
SPEAKER_12It shows on the field with you guys, and and Coach Volpe, I think what you said, the team aspect when they all are not they're playing selfless, I think is probably the most critical thing as you go into any game and but I have to ask you one thing. Are you bringing back the blocks for your defensive scheme at the at the championship? Ready. I love it. I can't wait to see them again. Ready? I I now know the code. You may have to change that up. Yeah. Figure it out. Yeah, yeah, I'm sure you will. Well, guys, let me tell you this. Uh, like Danny has said, we have watched a lot of your games, uh, and you guys making it back is a testament to how you've played this whole season. You haven't had an easy, easy record to go through. I mean, there are a lot of tough teams on your record. Obviously, any 10 is a gauntlet. And uh the way you handle yourselves, you can tell it's on offense and defense that you play as a team and are selfless. So I just want to wish you all the best of luck. I will see you up there. I will be up there at the at the game and be watching some of your practices. So we'll wish you all the luck in this last game of the 2025 season.
SPEAKER_13I have to say that the props go to the coaching staff for getting these guys ready. I think the coaching staff at a Delphi is bar none one of the best in the country, if not the best. You know, there'll be some other coaches that wouldn't be, you know, maybe argue with that with me, but I think what a Delphi does year in and year out is just amazing. And just a lot of that is a testament to the coaching staff and what's going on there behind the scenes. You guys are recruiting good guys, you're getting good players, high IQ. Um, guys that ball, man. Guys that want it. Reese Bower's a dog. I'm sorry. You're a dog, son. You're out there like you just kill it, bro. And Dylan, you're a dog, and you know you're a dog. You know, and just just just everybody offensively, like the way you guys share the rock. It's just, it was like yesterday was good lacrosse, you know. It was good lacrosse. If you like lacrosse, yesterday was a good game. You guys came away with that win. I felt that you controlled that game. I did. I didn't think that Adelphi was gonna lose that game. As close as it was. You guys dominated the middle of the field, and that's gonna be important going into the next game because that team is good. But guys, I wish you all the best of luck. Uh shipping up to Boston, guys. That's what we're doing. And uh, Panthers, I wish you all the best of luck. Guys, you did a great job tonight. Thanks for coming on.
SPEAKER_15Appreciate it. Thank you so much. Appreciate
THE only Game to Watch
SPEAKER_15it.
SPEAKER_12All right, Danny. We've spoken to both teams. We've done a recap of the games in the Final Four. Now it's Tampa versus Adelphi.
SPEAKER_13What do you think? I don't know. First of all, I just want to thank all the coaches and players for coming on tonight. You know, I'm excited for these young men. You know, they get to do something that's pretty special, and they get to go to a national championship. They get to play on the same field that Tom Brady made and Randy Moss and a lot of really good football players. Hey, and there's been a lot of good lacrosse games played in national championships there over the years, and Notre Dame's been there in Virginia. So it's kind of like a sacred place for lacrosse, and these guys get to play in that big stadium. So, congratulations, guys, and thank you so much for coming on tonight. We really appreciate it. But to pick one in this one, Kev, I think this is gonna be one hell of a game.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I totally agree. We're gonna pick one, but if I was, if this is regular season, I'd be saying a pick them game. Look at this a Delphi has five USA lacrosse All-Americans, Tampa with four. Damn close, right? Both have flip plenty of firepower. A Delphi with Danellan, Gibson, Dernan, Lewis, Tampa, Camp Sanchez, Lindsay, Ortega. Tampa is undefeated and not far removed from the natty they got in 2022. A Delphi is battle tested five games against top ten teams during the 2025 season. They've been there and done that. And like they said to us on the podcast, St. A's is legit, like we said, and they are a great test for them every time to prepare. Both teams with stellar goalies on that's gonna and then Mike Flores, though, could he be the difference at the dot?
SPEAKER_13I think that's where we can start to talk about a little bit. I think that's the spot. I think Flores is gonna have an edge there. I think I agree. Um uh again, not the worst year for Adelphi, not like they'd had the last year, but they've definitely improved. But, you know, Mikey Flores is is legit. You know, he he's he's a big boy, he's a consummate kid. He's been into a lot of big games. He's you know, he's in from that Sunshine State conference, and and it's a strong conference. If you look at the Maskey ratings, that's like the conference with the most the best teams of all, you know, top to bottom. So he's coming out of the best conference, aggle algorithm-wise, say that yeah three times fast. But according to the few high C's. Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't even attempt it then. I'm not smart. I'm smart enough for that. But just you know, the the Sunshine State Conference and just everything coming out of there. I it's just this is a tough one to pick, Kevin. This one's really difficult. Again, two great goalies, two great defenses, two offenses that can move the rock and score. Two teams with multiple kids that can put the rock in the back of the net. I mean, this is this is a tough one. I think Tampa gets the slight edge at the dot, but I still say you have to beat the champs, right?
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I'll tell you, I've gone back and forth on this one. I think this game is gonna be won in the middle of the field, starting at the dot. But if you can win the 50-50s, if you can muck it up, and you can if Delphi can ride like they they did the ride against St. A's and win the middle of the field and get the ball back, I you know, I it's just tough. You know, what do you do? You do you bit do you you place the bet on the the champs from last year, or do you place the bet on the team that's undefeated?
SPEAKER_13It is that close. It's tough. You know, I'm I again I was at that that Delphi game and I'm looking at their offense, and I was just at at Tampa two weeks ago with the Wingate Tampa game, and I watched their defense, and their defense, Tampa's defense was impressive, holding Wingate's, you know, attack units to just four points on the day. And you know what? They've been holding teams to really below 10, 9 goals a game. They haven't been playing, they haven't been putting up 17, 18, 19. They have, they have, yeah, but not regularly, you know. They're winning, they're winning games, but they're not putting up 17, 18, 19. They're not blowing out everybody. Whereas Adelphi's kind of been blowing out everybody except St. A's.
unknownSt.
SPEAKER_13A's seems to hold them into a one of two goal game. They match up well. So what's the difference? You know, so you look at the difference between Tampa and St. A's. I don't know if St. A's could beat Tampa. Tampa's good, man. Oh, yeah. So this one, Kev, I have to say, because Adelphi's the champs, and until you can beat the champ, they're the champ. So I like the way they move the ball. McDermott's fast, man. He's tough to guard. He makes things difficult. Uh Mikey Dernan's come out of nowhere. Really didn't get a whole lot of playing time last year, and this year he's just lighting up, especially the last couple of weeks. They got Kyle Lewis on offense, who, and quite frankly, is an amazing lacrosse player.
SPEAKER_12Then you add in someone like Nick O'Shea, who the Swiss Army knife.
SPEAKER_13Yeah. What do you mean by the way? The Swiss Army knife. Yeah. The Swiss Army knife. And then you got Big Noah, you know, he's a big boy back there. He's not an easy guard, you know. He can back guys up. He's like, you know, like a big center in like basketball. He just backs guys up, and he's hard to guard, and he can shoot. And then you got Braden Dunellen, who is magical with the stick. So I'm gonna give the edge to Adelphi. They're the champs, but I think it's gonna be could be an overtime game, it could be a one-goal game, Kev. I think it's gonna be that close.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I am going to go opposite you and say Tampa. I think I I I just could keep on going back to Mike Floyd.
SPEAKER_13Can't argue, can't argue with you there.
SPEAKER_12They've got, like we talked about, they got plenty of offensive firepower. I think their defense is stout. Like I said, I think it's gonna be who wins the middle of the field. The goalies are gonna play like those two goalies play. That's gonna be an even match.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, yeah. And Renner's gonna be up for that game, you know what? And Terrio's gonna be up for that game.
SPEAKER_12Yeah.
SPEAKER_13They'll be up for that game.
SPEAKER_12Who wins the middle of the field? From from the short stick D-mittis and the LSMs, the rope defense, and on face off, what are you gonna do?
SPEAKER_13I got you. That's the way I see it. I think Flores gets the edge there, you know, but that's only one part of the game. You know, there's other parts of the game. I know.
SPEAKER_12I gotcha.
SPEAKER_13And and and I just I just saw what Adelphi was able to do in the last couple of weeks defensively. Man, their defense is good. Reese Bower's a dog out there. DeLasandro's a dog out there. Nick O'Shea, I like again, just they're just they're good, man. They're they're a very good team, high IQ. They move the rock really well. They got fast players at Delphi. And then you got, you know, on Tampa, you got Bashaw and Lindsay Davis, and you know, just guy after guy after guy on offense, and then their defense with those two shorts, deep the mids leading them away. They multiple LSMs.
SPEAKER_12And that's what Coach is saying. If they if they can keep on running them in and they stay fresh, it I'll tell you.
SPEAKER_13Which is another thing, you know, just thinking about this, watching the game, the Adelphi being that at that game, I noticed that the second midline didn't get a whole lot of run. They ran their first midline a lot. Most of the game. They ran the ones hard. Yeah. Um, if they if they do that on next Sunday, it might be a long day.
SPEAKER_12I don't know what the weather's gonna be like, but I think it's gonna be cooler than it would be if you're playing in Tampa. Oh, yeah. It's gonna be good looking house weather.
SPEAKER_13So, yeah. So you got Tampa, you got Tampa. I got a Delphi in uh maybe overtime or one or one goal game. I think it's gonna be an exciting game. I think this is a really good matchup. I really do.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I totally agree.
Shout Outs
SPEAKER_12All right, Danny. Here we are at shout-outs. I think we've got one big one that we're gonna go over, and that's because USILA just dropped the all-region teams north and south. So I'll start off with the north, and then you take over and share. And this is a shout-out to all these players. Yeah, just phenomenal what they did. So I'll start off with the north right now. All North Region team. Player of the year, Braden Dunellan from a Delphi. Defensive player of the year, Dylan Renner, a Delphi. Offensive player of the year, Kyle Lewis, a Delphi. Um maybe I need to change my pick, Danny. But uh so that's the the top three major awards. Let's go to the teams in North uh Division II, first team on defense. Reese Bauer, Adelphi, Michael DiLasandro, Adelphi, and Charlie Hudson, Seaton Hill. At attack, Braden Delphant, Braden Dunellin, Adelphi, Danny Xabia, Pace, Sebastian Simonson, St. Michael's College, and Braden Lockier, Seaton Hill. LSM, Carter Linkletter, AIC, Shortstick, D. Middies, Colby Goodchild, St. Anselm, Nick O'Shea, Adelphi. Faceoff, Mark Strunk from Seaton Hill, and then the Middies, Kyle Lewis, Adelphi, Brian Green, Malloy, Carter Green, Seaton Hill, Ryan Bogar, Assumption. At goalie, Dylan Renner, Adelphi.
